Computer-mediated communication tools facilitate international collaboration projects between foreign language learners and peers abroad (O'Dowd, 2018). Social Virtual Reality (VR) applications allow for synchronous interactions and task-based communication in which learners can experience telepresence and immersion and conversate in a foreign language. Based on previous pilot experiences (Jauregi-Ondarra, Gruber, & Canto, 2020, 2021), this Virtual Exchange (VE) project aims to investigate how the specific affordances of Social High-immersion VR (SHiVR) in conjunction with designed tasks influence interaction patterns, and learning episodes. The VE took place between two groups of university students in the Netherlands (N=15) and Cyprus (N=14) through SHiVR in March 2022. The main aims of the tasks were to raise student intercultural awareness, stimulate task-based communication processes using English as a lingua franca and digital pedagogical competences of language education students. Different sources of data were gathered and analysed. In this paper, we describe and present the pedagogical experience and the initial results. There is no doubt that telecollaboration currently plays an important role in foreign language learning and, not less so, in the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Guth (2020) highlighted how telecollaboration has rapidly evolved in the past years as an innovative approach, and how it has brought together a whole community of academics and researchers interested in the field. In this paper, a brief overview of the various presentations that took place in the EuroCALL Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) Special Interest Group (SIG) Symposium is offered. The paper introduces four projects based on telecollaboration contextualised within an ESP classroom in higher education. The first one focuses on a collaborative debate project using English as a lingua franca; the second elaborates on improving learners' pragmatic skills through telecollaborative roleplays; the third describes an immersive Virtual Exchange (VE) aiming to foster the students' civic and entrepreneurial competence, while enhancing their intercultural communicative competence. The fourth project aimed at improving students' business communication and management skills in English in a multicultural environment. As teaching moves increasingly online, language teachers are faced with the challenge of how to support dyslexic students in an inclusive manner in and out of the classroom. This paper will focus on an innovative educational multi-modal, mobile application -- Comics for Inclusive English Language Learning (CIELL) -- supporting upper-intermediate and advanced English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students with dyslexia when faced with language proficiency tests and academic writing tasks. A cyclical educational design research methodology (McKenney & Reeves, 2019) was used to include three cycles of feedback from stakeholders so that their views and suggestions would inform the development of an alpha, beta, and gamma version of the app, thereby maximising practical relevance. The discussion of the quantitative and qualitative feedback is supported by educational design research. This short paper reports on the case of a tertiary level French language practitioner self-training in using Moodle Quiz during the COVID-19 pandemic online emergency remote teaching (Hodges et al., 2020). As no teacher training program included a topic such as 'how to deal with the pandemic', switching to online teaching was done under emergency conditions (MacIntyre, Gregersen, & Mercer, 2020). The practitioner had taken advantage of the situation and explored ways of self-training. She took advantage of Moodle Quiz (MQ) affordances. She experimented with different ways MQ could be used to construct a diverse number of quiz activities, embedded with audio and video, infused with elements of constructivism, and aiming at catering for the aims and expected outcomes of the specific students and course. Self-training helped the practitioner face the challenges of online emergency teaching as she developed knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary for creating online interactive activities. This paper delves into the underlying phases involved in designing, developing, and deploying Augmented Reality (AR) applications and game-based scenarios that will be implemented during intercultural exchanges among students in two different academic institutions in Sweden and Cyprus. Building on principles of design-based research (Barab & Squire, 2004; Klopfer & Squire, 2008), the aim is to expand the learning ecology by leveraging instructional tools and developing novel scenarios to broaden the trajectories of collaboration, intercultural understanding and communication, and cultural knowledge. The AR applications and scenarios are in the process of being developed as part of the Digital Methods Platform for Arts and Humanities (DiMPAH) project, where game-based activities will foster intercultural collaboration, exploration of cultural heritage sites, intercultural understanding, knowledge, and interaction. Adopting a bottom-up approach, instructors collaborate with a software developer and an extended research team to design pedagogically and culturally potent scenarios embedded in novel technologies that bring the virtual into the physical world. This paper examines a peer virtual exchange project between students at the University of Cyprus and the University of Latvia. The main purpose of this project is to develop intercultural awareness. Through telecollaborative tasks, students are asked to interact in a common discussion space around elements related to their cultural values. The aim of this paper is to discuss students' strategies for these online exchanges. The hypothesis this paper seeks to examine is that students do not express themselves freely in the discussion forums in order to protect their personal and national image. We are thus interested in the public self-image of the students, known as 'face'. Our findings identified politeness strategies and we are interested in the main reasons for their acts towards positive and/ or negative face. [For the complete volume, see ED609298.]

Despite the critical importance of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) Teacher Education (CTE) programmes, L2 practitioners often report that there are not many such onsite/online programmes, and the ones that exist may not directly meet their specific needs. Moreover, there seems to be a lack of systematic evaluation studies of such courses. As a result, problems in such courses cannot be diagnosed, and they are left unresolved. This paper presents a study undertaken to evaluate an online Master's of Arts (MA) in CALL programme in the Republic of Cyprus. The investigation was based on a conceptual multidimensional e-learning evaluation model rated by the students. Data were collected from 25 graduate students via an online anonymous survey. This focussed on the participants' perceptions of the value of the following aspects: (1) their engagement; (2) the course and its organisation, teaching mode, and materials; (3) course strengths; (4) course aspects most helpful to learning; and (5) course aspects which were obstacles to learning. "Serious Games [SGs] are applications combining educational content with gameplay by integrating learning objectives into a game-like environment" (Thillainathan & Leimeister, 2014, p. 1). However, they have not been used much in language teacher education and training (Ulicsak, 2010). This paper describes the design of "Creative Muscle," a SG and its use to train second language practitioners/ Master of Arts (MA) in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) studentteachers in the use of Singularity Viewer Virtual World (VW) for online micro teaching. This game-based training was delivered in three one-hour sessions. Creative Muscle was based on creative writing as a metaphor. Data included the researchers' personal observations, screen recordings of students' participation, and the participants' reflective journal entries. The findings gave insights into the effectiveness of the use of the 3D SG as a VWs' training mechanism. Students' feedback further provided ideas for game improvement which indicated a good understanding of the game, and of VWs. [For the complete volume of short papers, see ED590612.]

The effective implementation of distance education (DE) depends upon users having a positive attitude towards it. Preservice teachers have been unprepared for unexpected change because of the pandemic, bringing increased involvement of various types of DE. This study examines the level and predictors of attitudes towards DE among 103 preservice teachers enrolled in various departments of a private university in Northern Cyprus. Determining the attitudes of preservice teachers towards DE is important regarding they can transfer their skills and competencies on DE to their students in the future. Using an online survey, consisting of the demography and Distance Education Attitude Scale (DEAS), as a data collection instrument, the study shows that preservice teachers possessed a low-level positive attitude towards DE. They believed that the importance of DE has been increasing day by day, but it is a luxury for their countries. Results show that preservice teachers had neutral attitudes through DE about increasing one's learning capacity and productivity and improving the quality of the education. T-test and ANOVA analyses indicated that the independent variables had no significant effect on preservice teachers' attitudes towards DE. It can be supposed that preservice teachers share a common ground in their attitudes towards DE. Immersion through Virtual Reality (VR) gives the subjective impression that the learner has a realistic experience (Dede, 2009). The pedagogical potential of VR provides the means of enabling constructivist places of contextualised learning. This paper aims to examine the potential the VR application "Mondly" may have to maximise interactivity and aid learners in proactively experiencing empirical conversations that emulate authentic contexts. The research took place in an undergraduate course Italian I (A1, Common European Framework of Reference for languages), offered by the Cyprus University of Technology. The present study adopts a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the impact of "Mondly" on Italian learning. Digital material is incorporated into the lesson to promote contextualised learning. An experimental group is subjected to learning through "Mondly" whereas a control group is subjected to conventional lectures utilising the same material as the experimental group. Education is a field that constantly changes, which dictates the need for continuing teacher professional learning and development. Teacher professional learning and development can be divided into two categories: formal learning/ development and informal learning/development. This paper focuses on the experience of the presenters as coordinators of a large language section in a tertiary education institution, as this gave them the chance to develop professionally through informal learning, without attending any formal training sessions. Both coordinators did not have any previous experience in coordination, but they decided to keep a positive outlook on challenges and weaknesses, turning them into opportunities and strengths with the aid of technology. The experience of coordination will be presented using a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats/challenges (SWOT) framework of analysis. The present paper will report on this experience and how it helped the presenters develop professionally, and will also discuss the role of the use of online tools in the process. This paper describes micro-teaching delivery in virtual worlds. Emphasis is placed on examining the effectiveness of Singularity Viewer, an Internet-based Multi-User Virtual Environment (MUVE) as the tool used for assessment of the student teacher performance. The overall goal of this endeavour lies in exploiting the opportunities derived from such an immersive environment in order to provide better distance education. To this end, a total of eight language teacher practitioners from different parts of the world took part in this study and engaged in peer-microteaching as part of their Master of Arts (MA) in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) programme. Data acquisition involved screen recordings of the peer microteaching sessions, statements in participants' reflective journals and both debriefings and written communication within the virtual world. The Exercise, an Exercise generator in the SOURCe project, is a tool that complements the properties and functionalities of the SOURCe project, which includes the search engine for the Searchable Online French-Greek parallel corpus for the UniveRsity of Cyprus (SOURCe) (Kakoyianni-Doa & Tziafa, 2013), the PENCIL (an alignment tool) (Kakoyianni-Doa, Antaris, & Tziafa, 2013), and the Synonyms and the Library tools. These are designed as freely available resources for language processing, easy to use by teachers and learners. The Exercise tool enables teachers to create either online activities or print out paper-based worksheets, including a variety of texts and activities on topics, in a variety of exercise types (e.g. multiple choice, word, phrase or sentence matching, filling the gaps with missing words/phrases, text reconstruction, listening, etc.). This paper examines university students' views about a Cypriot-Spanish telecollaboration project through which participants used Google+ Communities for intercultural exchange over the course of one semester. The project was established through the UNICollaboration platform and it involved first-year students at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) and the University of Valencia (UV). The telecollaboration tasks and activities were embedded in the students' English for Specific Purposes modules. The project aimed at developing students' cultural awareness and competence learning, as well as at enhancing their motivation to learn English at university level. This paper outlines the pedagogical goals of the project, the design of tasks, the communication modes, the digital tools used for interaction and task completion, and the targeted competences. Using qualitative data through focus groups interviews with the students who participated in the project, the paper aims at exploring telecollaboration from the student experience perspective, demonstrating the benefits and challenges of online intercultural exchanges. Real life jobs need interdisciplinary skills and educations should be adjusted in a way that students obtain these skills in their education lives. Designing interdisciplinary online courses seems to be unavoidable in educational institutions to have the technological and innovational catch-up in the 21st century. Unique Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (USTEAM) not only has the intellectual facilities, but helps students to achieve their confidence and encourages them to participate. This paper includes a literature review about the effect of culture on students' academic behaviors as well as statistical results about students' perception and attitude to the USTEAM approach. In the online courses by fostering creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication and applied approach students are encouraged to love and participate in online learning. At the end of 4 months online course period, students' success is measured in three factors with BWG Assessment: Behavioral Success, Work Success and Group Success. IBM SPSS Statistics 25 used for reaching conclusions and for interpreting the data obtained. There were significant differences between males and females. Although some students were aggressive at the beginning toward being a member of STEAM, they were more motivated when they didn't had any competitors and they were expected to produce their Unique projects regardless of what others do! For motivation theorists, the results from this study provide evidence that interdisciplinary cultural influences in courses can be expressed in diverse educational settings. For educators, this study underlines the importance of cooperative and creative USTEAM activities in online courses.

This paper presents an overview of research in the field of decision theory, with a focus on problem and identification. The goal is to make the decision-making process as rational as possible in order to maximize the rational administration of the organization. The decisions associated with educational administration can be categorized as structured (programmed and routine) or unstructured (unprogrammed and more uncertain). In the face of uncertainty, decision makers often utilize labeling of the issues as threats or opportunities. Individual behavioral factors that affect the labeling process include perceptual filters, aspiration levels, capabilities and experience, and stress. The individual decision maker also uses various heuristic devices (rules of thumb) that affect issue labeling, such as elimination by aspect, intuition, anchoring and adjustment, the availability of options, and representativeness. In conclusion, three clusters of factors affect the labeling of issues: (1) the decision maker's (educational leader's) behavioral characteristics; (2) the educational organization's performance level; and (3) the environmental influence and locus of control. The most important is the decision maker and his/her ways of gathering, manipulating, and giving meaning to information. (Contains 72 references.) (LMI)

There has been a growing interest in incorporating social media in education and in language teaching in general. From a pedagogical perspective, as mentioned in Kleanthous (2016), blogs (or weblogs) appear to be effective in enhancing writing and/or reading skills, as their interactive platforms enable learners to exchange comments and offer feedback to each other, thus allowing learners to reflect on their own work and the learning process. Following our previous research (Kleanthous, 2016), this study proposes a research agenda for the effectiveness of collaboration through peer feedback in order to enhance the writing and speaking skills of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) students in online settings. A preliminary analysis of data collected suggests that the interactive use of blogs in the ESP classroom has a positive impact on students' writing and speaking skills. The discussion of our results highlights the importance of social media in promoting language learning within a collaborative environment that is essentially learner-centered and teacher facilitated, as recommended by Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) researchers (e.g. Chapelle, 2001). This article describes the use of instructional technology to promote, through a combination of behaviorist/structuralist and communicative/action-based methodologies, correct pronunciation of French as a Foreign Language (FFL) to native Greek-speaking false-beginner-level learners. It is based on the analysis of a teaching programme, complemented by an end-of-semester student evaluation questionnaire. Within the curriculum of the A1/A2 level French courses at Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), learners acquire the spoken language largely through communicative action-based tasks. In addition, teacher-authored preparatory exercises, created using the "Schoolshape" digital language lab system, provide the content of pronunciation exercises. Being cloud-based, "Schoolshape" allows teaching and learning to extend out of the classroom. Students can complete exercises virtually anywhere there is a broadband Internet connection and receive immediate automatic feedback as well as profit from the asynchronous online monitoring of their instructor. Moreover, the pronunciation exercises, whose substance is linked to the action-based tasks, can be meaningfully integrated into the communicative curriculum. An end-of-year survey collects feedback from students concerning the attention paid to their pronunciation in general and their use of "Schoolshape" in particular. The purpose of this study is to investigate adult learners' approaches towards Turkish Language (TL) and examine learners' outlooks towards the use of digital technologies for learning. It will also evaluate the impact of the Language Lab's model on learners' language achievement. Language Lab model is a system that is used for learning languages by using technology. It comprises a teacher and student console. The role of the teacher console is to offer the control purposes while the student console is given the facility to obtain the lessons that have been recorded. They are also required to listen to the pronunciations. An example of the Language Lab is the digital language lab (Saxena, 2012).The research questions of the study were based on whether attitudes towards digital technologies varied based on different backgrounds (i.e linguistic, educational, etc). There was also an analysis of whether the implementation of Language Lab's model motivated the Turkish as a Second or Foreign Language (TSL/FL) learners of Adult Education Programs (AEP) to continue their studies. During this assessment procedure, it was identified that students used varied technological tools (Kahoot and Facebook) that motivated them to learn foreign languages in an efficient way. In conclusion, it can be affirmed that with the adoption and the execution of the above stated technological tools, the approaches of the students changed by a considerable degree in learning TL within the classroom setting. It is thus worth mentioning that the findings of this study can encourage the TL teachers to use technology in their classes in order to turn them into more autonomous, student-centered teachers using an effective language method in TL acquisition. Language learning has witnessed a series of changes with regards to the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Recently, the digital divide has been a topic of discussion in language learning studies. Digital divide is the inequality that exists between information-poor and information-rich communities. Within the field of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), scant literature exists regarding the use of technology in poor ICT contexts. Yet, many people learn and teach language in such contexts. Egbert and Yang (2004) define low-tech context as possessing limited general access to technology, limited or no Internet access, no software, old and mandated software, and few computers and other technologies. Following action research design, we implemented a small-scale intervention using game-based quizzes in order to address the challenges encountered in teaching Turkish in a limited-tech context. Data collected included questionnaires, focus groups and participant observation in the classroom. The findings of the study informed the opportunities and challenges of teaching and learning Turkish in a technology-limited classroom. [For the complete volume of short papers, see ED572005.]

The effectiveness of academic research enterprise depends on several factors including talented and interconnected scholars, adequate and dependable resources, and quality research. These elements need to function in harmony in order to result in research knowledge that adds value to society. Given that research capacity and innovation are internationally recognized as main determinates of national progress and prosperity, most nations make significant investment in academic research and knowledge transfer. In addition, higher education institutions worldwide are increasingly pressured to build research capacity and to increase research activity. Meanwhile, researchers are expected to show high level of research productivity and efficiency to prove their research excellence. This exploratory research study is based on the voices of 32 respondents from 15 countries to showcase their perceptions on research productivity demands at their respective institutions. A literature review about current climate of research enterprise along with the respondents' voices clearly indicate that research productivity demands are growing and researchers find it difficult to meet expectations posed upon them. The findings lead to the conclusion that more attention needs to be dedicated to institutional policies and practices that influence researchers work and on a larger scale the effectiveness of academic research enterprise.

While the debate on breakthrough technologies has focused on inept, dexterous, and socially transforming technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistants and robot dexterity, in second/foreign language learning, particular emphasis is placed on AI, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). This study takes a closer look at the role of three newly developed AR applications in promoting a better understanding of complex concepts such as the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), strategies in dealing with disruptive students, and an immigrant's perspective in moving to a foreign country with no knowledge of the language(s) spoken in that country. The AR applications were developed and implemented during intercultural exchanges among students enrolled in academic institutions in the UK and Cyprus. The aim was to develop AR applications that were geared toward the learning needs of future language teachers and examine what students could achieve through the use of these applications during goal-driven tasks and activities. END 2016 received 489 submissions, from 53 different countries, reviewed by a double-blind process. Even though there is growing consensus for engaging primary students with early algebraic ideas, there is limited research knowledge about the relevant learning opportunities designed in textbooks. Textbooks are considered to play an important role in what is happening in classrooms, especially in educational contexts where classroom instruction relies heavily on textbooks. An analytic framework was developed to identify the opportunities designed in textbooks for engaging students with algebra-related tasks and to examine the respective guidance (or lack thereof) in the accompanying teacher guidebooks. The framework was used to analyse a primary textbook series for grades 4-6 and relevant findings are presented. The Commission on International Adult Education (CIAE) of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) provides a forum for the discussion of international issues related to adult education in general, as well as adult education in various countries around the globe.
