Search

Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is a phenomenon in which electric charge is separated by a strong magnetic field from local domains of chirality imbalance and parity violation in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The CME-sensitive observable, charge-dependent three-point azimuthal correlator $\Delta\gamma$, is contaminated by a major physics background proportional to the particle's elliptic anisotropy $v_2$. Event-shape engineering (ESE) binning events in dynamical fluctuations of $v_2$ and event-shape selection (ESS) binning events in statistical fluctuations of $v_2$ are two methods to search for the CME by projecting $\Delta\gamma$ to the $v_2=0$ intercept. We conduct a systematic study of these two methods using physics models as well as toy model simulations. It is observed that the ESE method requires significantly more statistics than the ESS method to achieve the same statistical precision of the intercept. It is found that the intercept from the ESS method depends on the details of the event content, such as the mixtures of background contributing sources, and thus is not a clean measure of the CME., Comment: 20 pages, 20 figures

Collective anisotropic flow, where particles are correlated over the entire event, is a prominent phenomenon in relativistic heavy-ion collisions and is sensitive to the properties of the matter created in those collisions. It is often measured by two- and multi-particle correlations and is therefore contaminated by nonflow, those genuine few-body correlations unrelated to the global event-wise correlations. Many methods have been devised to estimate nonflow contamination with various degrees of successes and difficulties. Here, we review those methods pedagogically, discussing the pros and cons of each method, and give examples of ballpark estimate of nonflow contamination and associated uncertainties in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Azimuthal anisotropy has been ubiquitously observed in high-energy proton-proton, proton-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus (heavy-ion) collisions, shaking the early belief that those anisotropies must stem from utterly strong interactions. This work reports a study of anisotropic expansion of cold $^{6}$Li Fermi gases, initially trapped in an anisotropic potential, as a function of the interaction strength that can be readily tuned by an external magnetic field. It is found that the expansion anisotropy builds up quickly at small interaction strength, without the need of utterly strong interactions. A universal behavior of the expansion anisotropy is quantitatively observed between cold-atom and heavy-ion systems, despite their vast differences in physics. This universality will potentially unify a variety of disciplines in nature, from the weakly interacting dilute systems of gases to the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma of the early universe., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

The hexadecapole deformation ($\beta_4$) of the $^{238}$U nucleus has not been determined because its effect is overwhelmed by those from the nucleus' large quadrupole deformation ($\beta_2$) in nuclear electric transition measurements. In this Letter, we identify the nonlinear response of the hexadecapole anisotropy to ellipticity in relativistic $^{238}$U+ $^{238}$U collisions that is solely sensitive to $\beta_4$ and insensitive to $\beta_2$. Hydrodynamics can describe majority of the measured azimuthal anisotropies in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Many of the anisotropy measurements are contaminated by nonflow correlations (i.e., those unrelated to global event-wise correlations). Those nonflow contamination can cause incorrectness or compromise the accuracy of the physics extracted from data-hydrodynamics comparison, particularly when one relies on subtle difference in the measurements. In the recent preprint by STAR (arXiv:2401.06625) extracting the Uranium nucleus deformation parameter, nonflow contamination is assessed by subevents in the limited STAR acceptance. In this note, we demonstrate that such assessment is inadequate and illustrate how large an effect nonflow can cause by using the HIJING model, in which all correlations are nonflow and non-hydrodynamic. We thereby conclude that the extracted Uranium deformation parameter is premature and emphasize the importance of an earnest assessment of or correction for nonflow contamination, not only for this STAR analysis but more generally for studies relying on comparing anisotropy measurements to hydrodynamic calculations., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figs. We use a coalescence model to generate $f_{0}$(980) particles for four configurations: ${s\bar{s}}$ meson, ${u\bar{u}s\bar{s}}$ tetraquark, ${K^{+}K^{-}}$ molecule and $u\bar{u}$ p-wave state. The phase-space information of the coalescing constituents is taken from a multi-phase transport (AMPT) simulation of proton-proton and proton-lead collisions at the LHC. It is shown that the transverse momentum spectra and production yields of $f_0(980)$ differ significantly among the configurations. It is suggested that the $p_T$ spectra of the $f_0(980)$ compared to those of other hadrons (such as pion) and the ratio of the $f_0(980)$ $p_T$ spectra in pPb over pp can be exploited to tell the configuration of the $f_0(980)$.

Relativistic isobar ($^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr) collisions have revealed intricate differences in their nuclear size and shape, inspiring unconventional studies of nuclear structure using relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this study, we investigate the relative differences in the mean multiplicity ($R_{\langle N_{\rm ch}\rangle}$) and the second- ($R_{\epsilon_{2}}$) and third-order eccentricity ($R_{\epsilon_{3}}$) between isobar collisions using initial state models. It is found that initial fluctuations and nuclear deformations have negligible effects on $R_{\langle N_{\rm ch}\rangle}$ in most central collisions, while both are important for the $R_{\epsilon_{2}}$ and $R_{\epsilon_{3}}$, the degree of which is sensitive to the underlying nucleonic or sub-nucleonic degree of freedom. We celebrate the legacies of our friend and mentor Professor Lianshou Liu who was one of the pioneers for the phenomenology of multi-particle interactions and initiated the physics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions in China. In this article, we discuss some of the recent exciting experimental observations on the collective phenomena including collectivity, chirality, criticality, strangeness production, and thermal equilibrium in high-energy nuclear collisions. Future directions, especially the physics at high baryon density, will be discussed with a focus on the first-order phase boundary and hyperon-nucleon interactions., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

The nuclear equation of state (EOS) is at the center of numerous theoretical and experimental efforts in nuclear physics. With advances in microscopic theories for nuclear interactions, the availability of experiments probing nuclear matter under conditions not reached before, endeavors to develop sophisticated and reliable transport simulations to interpret these experiments, and the advent of multi-messenger astronomy, the next decade will bring new opportunities for determining the nuclear matter EOS, elucidating its dependence on density, temperature, and isospin asymmetry. Among controlled terrestrial experiments, collisions of heavy nuclei at intermediate beam energies (from a few tens of MeV/nucleon to about 25 GeV/nucleon in the fixed-target frame) probe the widest ranges of baryon density and temperature, enabling studies of nuclear matter from a few tenths to about 5 times the nuclear saturation density and for temperatures from a few to well above a hundred MeV, respectively. Collisions of neutron-rich isotopes further bring the opportunity to probe effects due to the isospin asymmetry. However, capitalizing on the enormous scientific effort aimed at uncovering the dense nuclear matter EOS, both at RHIC and at FRIB as well as at other international facilities, depends on the continued development of state-of-the-art hadronic transport simulations. Due to the dynamics and uncertainty of the dynamic multi-objective optimization problems (DMOPs), it is difficult for algorithms to find a satisfactory solution set before the next environmental change, especially for some complex environments. One reason may be that the information in the environmental static stage can not be used well in the traditional framework. In this paper, a novel framework based on generational and environmental response strategies (FGERS) is proposed, in which response strategies are run both in the environmental change stage and the environmental static stage to obtain population evolution information of those both stages. Unlike in the traditional framework, response strategies are only run in the environmental change stage. For simplicity, the feed-forward center point strategy was chosen to be the response strategy in the novel dynamic framework (FGERS-CPS). FGERS-CPS is not only to predict change trend of the optimum solution set in the environmental change stage, but to predict the evolution trend of the population after several generations in the environmental static stage. Together with the feed-forward center point strategy, a simple memory strategy and adaptive diversity maintenance strategy were used to form the complete FGERS-CPS. On 13 DMOPs with various characteristics, FGERS-CPS was compared with four classical response strategies in the traditional framework. Experimental results show that FGERS-CPS is effective for DMOPs.

In a recent preprint arXiv:2203.10029, the authors argue for a multiplicity scaling of the squared inverse width of the $R_{\Psi_{2}}$ distribution to claim a positive signal for the chiral magnetic effect from STAR's isobar data, in stark contradiction to the conclusion reached by the STAR Collaboration. Transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) generation in relativistic heavy ion collisions is sensitive to the initial geometry and the final-state bulk evolution. We demonstrate with hydrodynamic calculations that the mean $p_T$ ratio ($R_{\langle p_{T}\rangle}$) between the highly similar isobar $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr collisions is insensitive to the bulk evolution and remains sensitive to the small difference in the initial nuclear structure (neutron skin and deformation) between the Ru and Zr nuclei.We further find that nuclear deformation can produce an anticorrelation between $R_{\langle p_{T}\rangle}$ and eccentricity (or elliptic flow) in central collisions. These findings suggest that the $R_{\langle p_{T}\rangle}$ between the isobar systems can be used to measure the neutron skin thickness and deformation parameters, which can in turn constrain the nuclear symmetry energy slope parameter., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Correlation measurements with respect to the spectator and participant planes in relativistic heavy ion collisions were proposed to extract the chiral magnetic effect (CME) from background dominated azimuthal correlators. This paper investigates the effects of two- and three-particle nonflow correlations on the extracted CME signal fraction, $f_{\text{CME}}$. It is found, guided by a multiphase transport (AMPT) model and the heavy ion jet interaction generator (HIJING) together with experimental data, that the nonflow effects amount to approximately $(4\pm5)$% and $(-5\pm3)$% without and with pseudorapidity gaps, respectively, in 20-50% centrality Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}= 200 \text{ GeV}$., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a novel transport phenomenon, arising from the interplay between quantum anomalies and strong magnetic fields in chiral systems. In high-energy nuclear collisions, the CME may survive the expansion of the quark-gluon plasma fireball and be detected in experiments. Over the past decade, the experimental searches for the CME have aroused extensive interest at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The main goal of this article is to investigate three pertinent experimental approaches: the $\gamma$ correlator, the $R$ correlator and the signed balance functions. We will exploit both simple Monte Carlo simulations and a realistic event generator (EBE-AVFD) to verify the equivalence in the kernel-component observables among these methods and to ascertain their sensitivities to the CME signal for the isobaric collisions at RHIC., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. Neutron skin thickness ($\Delta r_{\rm np}$) of nuclei and the inferred nuclear symmetry energy are of critical importance to nuclear physics and astrophysics. It is traditionally measured by nuclear processes with significant theoretical uncertainties. We recently proposed an indirect measurement of the $\Delta r_{\rm np}$ by charged hadron multiplicities in central isobaric collisions at relativistic energies, which are sensitive to nuclear densities. In this Letter, we propose a direct measurement of the $\Delta r_{\rm np}$ by using net-charge multiplicities in ultra-peripheral (grazing) collisions of those isobars, under the assumption that they are simple superimposition of nucleon-nucleon interactions. Isobaric $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV have been conducted at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider to circumvent the large flow-induced background in searching for the chiral magnetic effect (CME), predicted by the topological feature of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Considering that the background in isobar collisions is approximately twice that in Au+Au collisions (due to the smaller multiplicity) and the CME signal is approximately half (due to the weaker magnetic field), we caution that the CME may not be detectable with the collected isobar data statistics, within $\sim$2$\sigma$ significance, if the axial charge per entropy density ($n_5/s$) and the QCD vacuum transition probability are system independent. This expectation is generally verified by the Anomalous-Viscous Fluid Dynamics (AVFD) model. The effects of neutron skin on the multiplicity ($N_{\rm ch}$) and eccentricity($\epsilon_2$) in relativistic $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200$ GeV are investigated with the Trento model. It is found that the Ru+Ru/Zr+Zr ratios of the $N_{\rm ch}$ distributions and $\epsilon_{2}$ in mid-central collisions are exquisitely sensitive to the neutron skin type (skin vs.~halo). The state-of-the-art calculations by energy density functional theory (DFT) favor the halo-type neutron skin and can soon be confronted by experimental data. It is demonstrated that the halo-type density can serve as a good surrogate for the DFT density, and thus can be efficiently employed to probe nuclear deformities by using elliptic flow data in central collisions. Background: The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is extensively studied in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC. An azimuthal correlator called $R_{\Psi_{m}}$ was proposed to measure the CME. By observing the same $R_{\Psi_{2}}$ and $R_{\Psi_{3}}$ (convex) distributions from A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model, by contrasting data and model as well as large and small systems and by event shape engineering (ESE), a recent preprint (arXiv:2006.04251v1) from STAR suggests that the $R_{\Psi_{m}}$ observable is sensitive to the CME signal and relatively insensitive to backgrounds, and their Au+Au data are inconsistent with known background contributions. Purpose: We examine those claims by studying the robustness of the $R_{\Psi_{m}}$ observable using AMPT as well as toy model simulations. We compare $R_{\Psi_{m}}$ to the more widely used $\Delta\gamma$ azimuthal correlator to identify their commonalities and differences. Methods: We use AMPT to simulate Au+Au, p+Au, and d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 \text{ GeV}$, and study the responses of $R_{\Psi_{m}}$ to anisotropic flow backgrounds in the model. We also use a toy model to simulate resonance flow background and input CME signal to investigate their effects in $R_{\Psi_{2}}$. Additionally we use the toy model to perform an ESE analysis to compare to STAR data as well as predict the degree of sensitivity of $R_{\Psi_{2}}$ to isobar collisions with the event statistics taken at RHIC. ..., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

Within the ultra-relativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model, in which the Lorentz-covariant treatment of nuclear mean-field potential is considered, the fluctuations of net-baryon, net-charge and deuterons multiplicity distributions in Au+Au head-on collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=3.0-5.0$ GeV are calculated. The results show that the nuclear mean-field potential can significantly enhance the magnitude of baryon number fluctuations in narrow rapidity windows, and this enhancement rapidly weakens with increasing beam energy. However, for proton and net-charge number fluctuations, the mean-field effects are less noticeable than that for baryon number. In addition, for net-charge number fluctuations, the negative binomial distribution agrees well with the calculated results at mid-pseudorapidity window. Finally, the event-by-event fluctuations of deuteron number in the coalescence production picture are calculated as well, it is found that its cumulant ratios decrease linearly with increasing the average multiplicity of deuterons per event, i.e., increase with increasing beam energy., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

An observable sensitive to the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) is the charge asymmetry dependence of the $\pi^{-}$ and $\pi^{+}$ anisotropic flow difference, $\Delta v_{n}(A_{\rm ch})$. We show that, due to non-flow correlations, the flow measurements by the Q-cumulant method using all charged particles as reference introduce a trivial linear term to $\Delta v_{n}(A_{\rm ch})$. The trivial slope contribution to the triangle flow difference $\Delta v_{3}(A_{\rm ch})$ can be negative if the non-flow is dominated by back-to-back pairs. This can explain the observed negative $\Delta v_{3}(A_{\rm ch})$ slope in the preliminary STAR data. We further find that the non-flow correlations give rise to additional backgrounds to the slope of $\Delta v_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$ from the competition among different pion sources and from the larger multiplicity dilution to $\pi^{+}$ ($\pi^{-}$) at positive (negative) $A_{\rm ch}$., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, contribution to the proceedings of the 28th international conference on ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions (Quark Matter 2019)

In earlier studies we have proposed that most parton $v_2$ comes from the anisotropic escape of partons, not from the hydrodynamic flow, even for semi-central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. Here we study the flavor dependence of this escape mechanism with a multi-phase transport model. In contrast to naive expectations, we find that the charm $v_2$ is much more sensitive to the hydrodynamic flow than the lighter quark $v_2$, and the fraction of $v_2$ from the escape mechanism decreases strongly with the quark mass for large collision systems. We also find that the light quark collective flow is essential for the charm quark $v_2$. Our finding thus suggests that heavy quark flows are better probes of the quark-gluon-plasma properties than light quark flows., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. The experimentally measured charge-depdendent correlations in heavy ion collisions have been suggested as a signature of the chiral magenetic effect (CME). Early model studies could not reproduce the measurement. For example, the Hijing model yielded far smaller magnitude for the charge-dependent correlation than observed in data. This led to the conclusion that the CME had to be invoked to explain the observed correlations in heavy ion collisions. In this paper we show that this conclusion of the CME interpretation is premature. We show that the reason that Hijing predicts a far smaller correlation than data is because the elliptic anisotrpy ($v_{2}$) parameter in Hijing is too small. When properly scaled, the Hijing model can reproduce in entirety the measured correlations. We also employ the AMPT model, which has a large enough $v_2$, to demonstrate that the measured data can be easily accommodated by models without invoking the CME., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, update with the published version

Particle production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions depends on the details of the nucleon density distributions in the colliding nuclei. We demonstrate that the charged hadron multiplicity distributions in isobaric collisions at ultrarelativistic energies provide a novel approach to determine the poorly known neutron density distributions and thus the neutron skin thickness in finite nuclei, which can in turn put stringent constraints on the nuclear symmetry energy., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, published version

The charge asymmetry ($A_{\rm ch}$) dependence of the $\pi^{-}$ and $\pi^{+}$ elliptic flow difference, $\Delta v_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$, has been regarded as a sensitive observable for the possible chiral magnetic wave (CMW) in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this work, we first demonstrate that, due to non-flow backgrounds, the flow measurements by the Q-cumulant method using all charged particles as reference introduce a trivial linear term to $\Delta v_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$. The trivial slope can be negative in the triangle flow difference $\Delta v_{3}(A_{\rm ch})$ if the non-flow is dominated by back-to-back pairs. After eliminating the trivial term, we find that the non-flow between like-sign pairs gives rise to an additional positive slope to $\Delta v_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$ because of the larger dilution effect to $\pi^{+}$ ($\pi^{-}$) at positive (negative) $A_{\rm ch}$. We further find that the competition between different $\pi$ sources can introduce another non-trivial linear-$A_{\rm ch}$ term due to their different multiplicity fluctuations and anisotropic flows. We then study the effect of neutral cluster (resonance) decays as a mechanism for local charge conservation on the slope parameter of $\Delta v_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$. We find that the slope parameter is sensitive to the kinematics of those neutral clusters. Light resonances give positive slopes while heavy resonances give negative slopes. Local charge conservation from continuum cluster mass distribution can give a positive slope parameter comparable to experimental data. Our studies indicate that many non-CMW physics mechanisms can give rise to a $A_{\rm ch}$-dependent $\Delta v_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$ and the interpretation of $\Delta v_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$ in terms of the CMW is delicate., Comment: 9 pages and 6 figures

In the commonly used reaction plane (RP) dependent, charge dependent azimuthal correlator ($\Delta\gamma$), both the close and back-to-back pairs are included. Many backgrounds contribute to the close pairs (e.g. resonance decays, jet correlations), whereas the back-to-back pairs are relatively free of those backgrounds. $\textbf{Purpose:}$ In order to reduce those backgrounds, we propose a new observable which only focuses on the back-to-back pairs, namely, the relative back-to-back opposite-sign (OS) over same-sign (SS) pair excess ($r_{\text{BB}}$) as a function of the pair azimuthal orientation with respect to the RP ($\varphi_{\text{BB}}$). $\textbf{Methods:}$ We use analytical calculations and toy model simulations to demonstrate the sensitivity of $r_{\text{BB}}(\varphi_{\text{BB}})$ to the CME and its insensitivity to backgrounds. $\textbf{Results:}$ With finite CME, the $\varphi_{\text{BB}}$ distribution of $r_{\text{BB}}$ shows a clear characteristic modulation. Its sensitivity to background is significantly reduced compared to the previous $\Delta\gamma$ observable. The simulation results are consistent with our analytical calculations. $\textbf{Conclusions:}$ Our studies demonstrate that the $r_{\text{BB}}(\varphi_{\text{BB}})$ observable is sensitive to the CME signal and rather insensitive to the resonance backgrounds., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) refers to a charge separation (an electric current) of chirality imbalanced quarks generated along an external strong magnetic field. The chirality imbalance results from interactions of quarks, under the approximate chiral symmetry restoration, with metastable local domains of gluon fields of non-zero topological charges out of QCD vacuum fluctuations. Those local domains violate the $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{CP}$ invariance, potentially offering a solution to the strong $\mathcal{CP}$ problem in explaining the magnitude of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in today's universe. Relativistic heavy-ion collisions, with the likely creation of the high energy density quark-gluon plasma and restoration of the approximate chiral symmetry, and the possibly long-lived strong magnetic field, provide a unique opportunity to detect the CME. Early measurements of the CME-induced charge separation in heavy-ion collisions are dominated by physics backgrounds. Major efforts have been devoted to eliminate or reduce those backgrounds. The properties of nuclear matter under extreme conditions of high temperature, density and isospin-asymmetry have attracted wide attentions in recent years. At present, heavy ion reactions in combination with corresponding model simulations are one of the most important ways to investigate this subject. It is known that a strong magnetic field can be created in heavy ion collisions. However, its effect on the motion of charged particles is usually neglected in previous transport model simulations. In this work, within the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model, the temporal evolution and spatial distribution of the internal magnetic field are calculated. The magnetic field strength is found to reach about $eB\approx470$ MeV$^{2}$ ($B\approx8\times10^{16}$ G) for Au+Au collisions at $E_{\text{lab}}$=1 GeV/nucleon with impact parameter of 7 fm. The magnetic field in Cu+Au collisions exhibits somewhat different spatial distribution from that in Au+Au collisions. The magnetic field is found to affect the directed flow of pions at forward and backward rapidities to some extent, dependent of the impact parameter and beam energy while the effect on the elliptic flow is small. This suggests that, because $\pi$ mesons produced in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies are considered as a sensitive probe for the nuclear symmetry energy, it is necessary to consider the effect of the internal magnetic field., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures

We use a simple coalescence model to generate $f_{0}$(980) particles for three configurations: a ${s\bar{s}}$ meson, a ${u\bar{u}s\bar{s}}$ tetraquark, and a ${K^{+}K^{-}}$ molecule. The phase-space information of the coalescing constituents is taken from a multi-phase transport (AMPT) simulation of heavy-ion collisions. It is shown that the number of constituent quarks scaling of the elliptic flow anisotropy can be used to discern ${s\bar{s}}$ from ${u\bar{u}s\bar{s}}$ and ${K^{+}K^{-}}$ configurations.

Measurements of two-particle azimuthal angle correlations are a useful tool to study the distribution of jet energy loss, however, they are complicated because of the significant anisotropic flow background. We devise a data-driven method for subtracting anisotropic flow background in jet-like correlation analysis. We first require a large recoil momentum ($P_x$) within a given pseudo-rapidity ($\eta$) range from a high-transverse momentum particle to enhance in-acceptance population of away-side jet-like correlations. Then we take the difference of two-particle correlations in the close-region and far-region with respect to the $\eta$ region of $P_x$ to subtract the anisotropic flow background. We use a toy model which contains only anisotropic flow and PYTHIA8 which have jets to demonstrate the validity of our data-driven method. Isobaric $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr collisions were performed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in 2018. Using the "a multi-phase transport" model with nuclear structures calculated by the density functional theory (DFT), we make predictions for the charged hadron multiplicity distributions and elliptic azimuthal anisotropies in these collisions. The Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field, due to topological charge fluctuations in QCD. Charge correlation ($\Delta\gamma$) signals consistent with CME have been first observed almost a decade ago. It has also been known since then that the $\Delta\gamma$ is contaminated by a major background from resonance decays coupled with elliptic flow. In this contribution, we propose differential $\Delta\gamma$ measurements as function of the pair invariant mass ($m_{\rm inv}$). The $\Delta\gamma$ in the high $m_{\rm inv}$ region is essentially free of resonance backgrounds. In the low $m_{\rm inv}$ region, the $\Delta\gamma$ backgrounds show resonance peaks. The CME signal, presumably smooth in $m_{\rm inv}$, may thus be extracted from a two-component model fit. We demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of this novel method by using the AMPT and toy-model Monte-Carlo simulations. In this proceeding we will show that the expectations of the isobaric $^{96}_{44}\mathrm{Ru}+^{96}_{44}\mathrm{Ru}$ and $^{96}_{40}\mathrm{Zr}+^{96}_{40}\mathrm{Zr}$ collisions on chiral magnetic effect (CME) search may not hold as originally anticipated due to large uncertainties in the isobaric nuclear structures. We demonstrate this using Woods-Saxon densities and the proton and neutron densities calculated by the density functional theory. Furthermore, a novel method is proposed to gauge background and possible CME contributions in the same system, intrinsically better than the isobaric collisions of two different systems. Quark interactions with topological gluon fields in QCD can yield local $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{CP}$ violations which could explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in our universe. Effects of $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{CP}$ violations can result in charge separation under a strong magnetic field, a phenomenon called the chiral magnetic effect (CME). Experimental measurements of the CME-induced charge separation in heavy-ion collisions are dominated by physics backgrounds. We study the charm quark elliptic flow ($v_{2}$) in heavy ion as well as small system collisions by tracking the evolution history of quarks of different flavors within a multi-phase transport model. The charm quark $v_{2}$ is studied as a function of the number of collisions the charm quark suffers with other quarks and then compared to the $v_{2}$ of lighter quarks. We find that the common escape mechanism is at work for both the charm and light quark $v_{2}$. However, contrary to the naive expectation, the hydrodynamics-type flow is found to contribute more to the final state charm $v_{2}$ than light quark $v_{2}$. This could be explained by the smaller average deflection angle the heavier charm quark undergoes in each collision, so that heavy quarks need more scatterings to accumulate a significant $v_{2}$, while lighter quarks can more easily change directions with scatterings with their $v_{2}$ coming more from the escape mechanism. Our finding thus suggests that the charm $v_{2}$ is a better probe for studying the hydrodynamic properties of the quark-gluon plasma., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

A new sine observable, $R_{\Psi_2}(\Delta S)$, has been proposed to measure the chiral magnetic effect (CME) in heavy-ion collisions; $\Delta S = \left \langle \sin \varphi_+ \right \rangle - \left \langle \sin \varphi_- \right \rangle$, where $\varphi_\pm$ are azimuthal angles of positively and negatively charged particles relative to the reaction plane and averages are event-wise, and $R_{\Psi_2}(\Delta S)$ is a normalized event probability distribution. Preliminary STAR data reveal concave $R_{\Psi_2}(\Delta S)$ distributions in 200 GeV Au+Au collisions. Studies with a multiphase transport (AMPT) and anomalous-viscous Fluid Dynamics (AVFD) models show concave $R_{\Psi_2}(\Delta S)$ distributions for CME signals and convex ones for typical resonance backgrounds. A recent hydrodynamic study, however, indicates concave shapes for backgrounds as well. To better understand these results, we report a systematic study of the elliptic flow ($v_{2}$) and transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) dependences of resonance backgrounds with toy-model simulations and central limit theorem (CLT) calculations. It is found that the concavity or convexity of $R_{\Psi_2}(\Delta S)$ depends sensitively on the resonance $v_2$ (which yields different numbers of decay $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs in the in-plane and out-of-plane directions) and $p_T$ (which affects the opening angle of the decay $\pi^+\pi^-$ pair). Qualitatively, low $p_{T}$ resonances decay into large opening-angle pairs and result in more `back-to-back' pairs out-of-plane, mimicking a CME signal, or a concave $R_{\Psi_2}(\Delta S)$. Supplemental studies of $R_{\Psi_3}(\Delta S)$ in terms of the triangular flow ($v_3$), where only backgrounds exist but any CME would average to zero, are also presented., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

In high energy heavy ion collisions and interacting cold atom systems, large elliptic flow anisotropies have been observed. For the large opacity ($\rho\sigma L\sim 10^{3}$) of the latter hydrodynamics is a natural consequence, but for the small opacity ($\rho\sigma L\sim 1$) of the former hydrodynamic description is questionable. To shed light onto the situation, we simulate the expansion of a low density Argon ion (or atom) system, initially trapped in an elliptical region, under the Coulomb interaction (or elastic scattering). Significant elliptic anisotropy is found in both cases, and the anisotropy depends on the initial spatial eccentricity and the density of the system. The results may provide insights into the physics of anisotropic flow in high energy heavy ion collisions and its role in the study of quantum chromodynamics., Comment: 5 figures

The spectral flux density of stars can indicate their atmospheric physical properties. A detector can obtain any band flux density at the design stage. However, the band flux density is confirmed and fixed in the process of operation because of the restriction of filters. Other band flux densities cannot be obtained through the same detector. In this study, a computational model of stellar spectral flux density is established based on basic physical parameters which are effective temperature and angular parameter. The stochastic particle swarm optimization algorithm is adopted to address this issue with appropriately chosen values of the algorithm parameters. Four star catalogues are studied and consist of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX), and Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). The given flux densities from catalogues are input parameters. Stellar effective temperatures and angular parameters are inversed using the given flux densities according to SPSO algorithm. Then the flux density is calculated according to Planck's law on the basis of stellar effective temperatures and angular parameters. The calculated flux density is compared with the given value from catalogues. It is found that the inversion results are in good agreement for all bands of the MSX and 2MASS catalogues, whereas they do not agree well in some bands of the LAMOST and WISE catalogues. Based on the results, data from the MSX and 2MASS catalogues can be used to calculate the spectral flux density at different wavelengths of given wavelength ranges. We propose a novel method to search for the chiral magnetic effect (CME) in heavy ion collisions. We argue that the relative strength of the magnetic field (mainly from spectator protons and responsible for the CME) with respect to the reaction plane and the participant plane is opposite to that of the elliptic flow background arising from the fluctuating participant geometry. This opposite behavior in a single collision system, hence with small systematic uncertainties, can be exploited to extract the possible CME signal from the flow background. Under the approximate chiral symmetry restoration, quark interactions with topological gluon fields in quantum chromodynamics can induce chirality imbalance and parity violation in local domains. Topological gluon configurations in quantum chromodynamics induce quark chirality imbalance in local domains, which can result in the chiral magnetic effect (CME)--an electric charge separation along a strong magnetic field. Experimental searches for the CME in relativistic heavy ion collisions via the charge-dependent azimuthal correlator ($\Delta\gamma$) suffer from large backgrounds arising from particle correlations (e.g. due to resonance decays) coupled with the elliptic anisotropy. Systematic comparisons of jetlike correlation data to radiative and collisional energy loss model calculations are essential to extract transport properties of the quark-gluon medium created in relativistic heavy ion collisions. This paper presents a transport study of collisional broadening of jetlike correlations, by following parton-parton collision history in a multiphase transport (AMPT) model. The correlation shape is studied as a function of the number of parton-parton collisions suffered by a high transverse momentum probe parton ($N_{\rm coll}$) and the azimuth of the probe relative to the reaction plane ($\phi_{\rm fin.}^{\rm probe}$). Correlation is found to broaden with increasing $N_{\rm coll}$ and $\phi_{\rm fin.}^{\rm probe}$ from in- to out-of-plane direction. A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model has been shown to describe experimental data well, such as the bulk properties of particle spectra and elliptic anisotropy ($v_{2}$) in heavy ion collisions. Recent studies have shown that AMPT describes the $v_{2}$ data in small system collisions as well. In these proceedings, we first investigate the origin of the mass ordering of identified hadrons $v_{2}$ in heavy ion as well as small system collisions. We investigate the effect of resonance decays on the three-particle correlator charge separation observable in search for the chiral magnetic effect, using a simple simulation with realistic inputs. We find that resonance decays can largely account for the measured signal. We suppress the elliptic flow ($v_2$) background by using zero event-by-event $v_2$ (or via the mixed-event technique). We find that the background is suppressed, but not eliminated as naively anticipated. We identify the reason to be the non-identicalness of the resonance and final-state particle's $v_2$ and the induced correlation between the transverse momentum dependent resonance $v_2$ and decay angle. We make predictions for the charge separation signal due to resonance decays in 200~GeV Au+Au collisions.

Both hydrodynamics-based models and a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model can reproduce the mass splitting of azimuthal anisotropy ($v_n$) at low transverse momentum ($p_{\perp}$) as observed in heavy ion collisions. In the AMPT model, however, $v_n$ is mainly generated by the parton escape mechanism, not by the hydrodynamic flow. In this study we provide detailed results on the mass splitting of $v_n$ in this transport model, including $v_2$ and $v_3$ of various hadron species in d+Au and Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and p+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. We show that the mass splitting of hadron $v_2$ and $v_3$ in AMPT first arises from the kinematics in the quark coalescence hadronization process, and then, more dominantly, comes from hadronic rescatterings, even though the contribution from the latter to the overall charged hadron $v_n$ is small. We further show that there is no qualitative difference between heavy ion collisions and small-system collisions or between elliptic ($v_2$) and triangular ($v_3$) anisotropies. Our studies thus demonstrate that the mass splitting of $v_2$ and $v_3$ at low-$p_{\perp}$ is not a unique signature of hydrodynamic collective flow but can be the interplay of several physics effects., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures. The mass splitting of elliptic anisotropy ($v_2$) at low transverse momentum is considered as a hallmark of hydrodynamic collective flow. We investigate a multiphase transport (AMPT) model where the $v_2$ is mainly generated by an anisotropic escape mechanism, not of the hydrodynamic flow nature, and where mass splitting is also observed. We demonstrate that the $v_2$ mass splitting in AMPT is small right after hadronization (especially when resonance decays are included); the mass splitting mainly comes from hadronic rescatterings, even though their contribution to the overall charged hadron $v_2$ is small. These findings are qualitatively the same as those from hybrid models that combine hydrodynamics with a hadron cascade. We further show that there is no qualitative difference between heavy ion collisions and small system collisions. Our results indicate that the $v_2$ mass splitting is not a unique signature of hydrodynamic collective flow and thus cannot distinguish whether the elliptic flow is generated mainly from hydrodynamics or the anisotropic parton escape., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We trace the development of elliptic anisotropy (v2) via parton-parton collision history in two transport models. The parton v2 is studied as a function of the number of collisions of each parton in Au+Au and d+Au collisions at sNN =200 GeV. It is found that the majority of v2 comes from the anisotropic escape probability of partons, with no fundamental difference at low and high transverse momenta. The contribution to v2 from hydrodynamic-type collective flow is found to be small. Only when the parton-parton cross-section is set unrealistically large does this contribution start to take over.
