Highways always have a huge impact on the environment, quantifying the level of pollution and calculating the traffic capacity under environmental constraints is an important part of practicing environmental protection. Available traffic capacity methods do not focus on the traffic emissions impact on road region environment. To fill this research gap, this paper proposes a method consisting of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model and Traffic Flow Field and the Gas Flow Field coupled model for the traffic capacity model. The COPERT 5 model is adopted to simulate the traffic emissions on highways with field measurement data and traffic conditions as initial conditions. Then, these are served as the inputs, set and further calculated using coupled model in the CFD numerical simulation phase. Finally, modeling the Traffic Capacity model and calculating the traffic capacity. The experiment results in G30 Yongshan highway section demonstrate that, with the proposed method, the CFD simulation model for traffic emissions in highway region can reflect the practical conditions (the overall error is within 10%), while the traffic capacity can be well performance with the traffic capacity model under the atmospheric pollution constraints. The annual average traffic capacity of G30 Yongshan is 739,800 vehicles, and SO2 under different constraints has the greatest limitation on traffic capacity (90,9662 vehicles), which is the most dominant impact in the environmental constraints of the road region, rest are ranked in: NO2 (246,5373), PM2.5 (323,6022), CO (771,8717), CO2 (803,7217), and PM10 (2202,0013)., Comment: The Transportation Research Board (TRB) 103nd Annual Meeting

Link prediction, as a fundamental task for graph neural networks (GNNs), has boasted significant progress in varied domains. Its success is typically influenced by the expressive power of node representation, but recent developments reveal the inferior performance of low-degree nodes owing to their sparse neighbor connections, known as the degree-based long-tailed problem. Will the degree-based long-tailed distribution similarly constrain the efficacy of GNNs on link prediction? Unexpectedly, our study reveals that only a mild correlation exists between node degree and predictive accuracy, and more importantly, the number of common neighbors between node pairs exhibits a strong correlation with accuracy. Considering node pairs with less common neighbors, i.e., tail node pairs, make up a substantial fraction of the dataset but achieve worse performance, we propose that link prediction also faces the long-tailed problem. Therefore, link prediction of GNNs is greatly hindered by the tail node pairs. After knowing the weakness of link prediction, a natural question is how can we eliminate the negative effects of the skewed long-tailed distribution on common neighbors so as to improve the performance of link prediction? Towards this end, we introduce our long-tailed framework (LTLP), which is designed to enhance the performance of tail node pairs on link prediction by increasing common neighbors. Two key modules in LTLP respectively supplement high-quality edges for tail node pairs and enforce representational alignment between head and tail node pairs within the same category, thereby improving the performance of tail node pairs.

Nanosatellite constellations equipped with sensors capturing large geographic regions provide unprecedented opportunities for Earth observation. As constellation sizes increase, network contention poses a downlink bottleneck. Orbital Edge Computing (OEC) leverages limited onboard compute resources to reduce transfer costs by processing the raw captures at the source. However, current solutions have limited practicability due to reliance on crude filtering methods or over-prioritizing particular downstream tasks. This work presents FOOL, an OEC-native and task-agnostic feature compression method that preserves prediction performance. FOOL partitions high-resolution satellite imagery to maximize throughput. Further, it embeds context and leverages inter-tile dependencies to lower transfer costs with negligible overhead. While FOOL is a feature compressor, it can recover images with competitive scores on quality measures at lower bitrates. We extensively evaluate transfer cost reduction by including the peculiarity of intermittently available network connections in low earth orbit. Lastly, we test the feasibility of our system for standardized nanosatellite form factors. With the rapid proliferation of large Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations, a huge amount of in-orbit data is generated and needs to be transmitted to the ground for processing. However, traditional LEO satellite constellations, which downlink raw data to the ground, are significantly restricted in transmission capability. Orbital edge computing (OEC), which exploits the computation capacities of LEO satellites and processes the raw data in orbit, is envisioned as a promising solution to relieve the downlink burden. Yet, with OEC, the bottleneck is shifted to the inelastic computation capacities. The computational bottleneck arises from two primary challenges that existing satellite systems have not adequately addressed: the inability to process all captured images and the limited energy supply available for satellite operations. In this work, we seek to fully exploit the scarce satellite computation and communication resources to achieve satellite-ground collaboration and present a satellite-ground collaborative system named TargetFuse for onboard object detection. TargetFuse incorporates a combination of techniques to minimize detection errors under energy and bandwidth constraints. Extensive experiments show that TargetFuse can reduce detection errors by 3.4 times on average, compared to onboard computing. The rapid development of graph neural networks (GNNs) encourages the rising of link prediction, achieving promising performance with various applications. Unfortunately, through a comprehensive analysis, we surprisingly find that current link predictors with dynamic negative samplers (DNSs) suffer from the migration phenomenon between "easy" and "hard" samples, which goes against the preference of DNS of choosing "hard" negatives, thus severely hindering capability. Towards this end, we propose the MeBNS framework, serving as a general plugin that can potentially improve current negative sampling based link predictors. In particular, we elaborately devise a Meta-learning Supported Teacher-student GNN (MST-GNN) that is not only built upon teacher-student architecture for alleviating the migration between "easy" and "hard" samples but also equipped with a meta learning based sample re-weighting module for helping the student GNN distinguish "hard" samples in a fine-grained manner. To effectively guide the learning of MST-GNN, we prepare a Structure enhanced Training Data Generator (STD-Generator) and an Uncertainty based Meta Data Collector (UMD-Collector) for supporting the teacher and student GNN, respectively. Extensive experiments show that the MeBNS achieves remarkable performance across six link prediction benchmark datasets.

In recent years, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites have witnessed rapid development, with inference based on Deep Neural Network (DNN) models emerging as the prevailing technology for remote sensing satellite image recognition. However, the substantial computation capability and energy demands of DNN models, coupled with the instability of the satellite-ground link, pose significant challenges, burdening satellites with limited power intake and hindering the timely completion of tasks. Existing approaches, such as transmitting all images to the ground for processing or executing DNN models on the satellite, is unable to effectively address this issue. By exploiting the internal hierarchical structure of DNNs and treating each layer as an independent subtask, we propose a satellite-ground collaborative computation partial offloading approach to address this challenge. We formulate the problem of minimizing the inference task execution time and onboard energy consumption through offloading as an integer linear programming (ILP) model. The complexity in solving the problem arises from the combinatorial explosion in the discrete solution space. To address this, we have designed an improved optimization algorithm based on branch and bound. Recent advancements in satellite technologies and the declining cost of access to space have led to the emergence of large satellite constellations in Low Earth Orbit. However, these constellations often rely on bent-pipe architecture, resulting in high communication costs. Existing onboard inference architectures suffer from limitations in terms of low accuracy and inflexibility in the deployment and management of in-orbit applications. To address these challenges, we propose a cloud-native-based satellite design specifically tailored for Earth Observation tasks, enabling diverse computing paradigms. In this work, we present a case study of a satellite-ground collaborative inference system deployed in the Tiansuan constellation, demonstrating a remarkable 50\% accuracy improvement and a substantial 90\% data reduction. Our work sheds light on in-orbit energy, where in-orbit computing accounts for 17\% of the total onboard energy consumption. As a driving force in the advancement of intelligent in-orbit applications, DNN models have been gradually integrated into satellites, producing daily latency-constraint and computation-intensive tasks. However, the substantial computation capability of DNN models, coupled with the instability of the satellite-ground link, pose significant challenges, hindering timely completion of tasks. It becomes necessary to adapt to task stream changes when dealing with tasks requiring latency guarantees, such as dynamic observation tasks on the satellites. To this end, we consider a system model for a collaborative inference system with latency constraints, leveraging the multi-exit and model partition technology. To address this, we propose an algorithm, which is tailored to effectively address the trade-off between task completion and maintaining satisfactory task accuracy by dynamically choosing early-exit and partition points. Simulation evaluations show that our proposed algorithm significantly outperforms baseline algorithms across the task stream with strict latency constraints.

Deploying deep learning (DL) on mobile devices has been a notable trend in recent years. To support fast inference of on-device DL, DL libraries play a critical role as algorithms and hardware do. Unfortunately, no prior work ever dives deep into the ecosystem of modern DL libs and provides quantitative results on their performance. In this paper, we first build a comprehensive benchmark that includes 6 representative DL libs and 15 diversified DL models. We then perform extensive experiments on 10 mobile devices, which help reveal a complete landscape of the current mobile DL libs ecosystem. For example, we find that the best-performing DL lib is severely fragmented across different models and hardware, and the gap between those DL libs can be rather huge. In fact, the impacts of DL libs can overwhelm the optimizations from algorithms or hardware, e.g., model quantization and GPU/DSP-based heterogeneous computing. Finally, atop the observations, we summarize practical implications to different roles in the DL lib ecosystem.

Handsearch is an important technique that contributes to thorough literature search in systematic reviews. Traditional handsearch requires reviewers to systematically browse through each issue of a curated list of field-specific journals and conference proceedings to find articles relevant to their review. This manual process is not only time-consuming, laborious, costly, and error-prone, but it also lacks replicability and cross-checking mechanisms. In an attempt to solve these problems, this paper presents a free and open-source Python package and an accompanying web-app, Paperfetcher, to automate handsearch for systematic reviews. With Paperfetcher's assistance, researchers can retrieve articles from designated journals within a specified time frame with just a few clicks. In addition to handsearch, this tool also incorporates snowballing in both directions. Paperfetcher allows researchers to download retrieved studies as a list of DOIs or as an RIS database to facilitate seamless import into citation management and systematic review screening software. To our knowledge, Paperfetcher is the first tool that automates handsearch with high usability and a multi-disciplinary focus.

Recently, the use of deep learning techniques to reconstruct computed tomography (CT) images has become a hot research topic, including sinogram domain methods, image domain methods and sinogram domain to image domain methods. All these methods have achieved favorable results. In this article, we have studied the important functions of fully connected layers used in the sinogram domain to image domain approach. First, we present a simple domain mapping neural networks. Then, we analyze the role of the fully connected layers of these networks and visually analyze the weights of the fully connected layers. Finally, by visualizing the weights of the fully connected layer, we found that the main role of the fully connected layer is to implement the back projection function in CT reconstruction. This finding has important implications for the use of deep learning techniques to reconstruct computed tomography (CT) images. For example, since fully connected layer weights need to consume huge memory resources, the back-projection function can be implemented by using analytical algorithms to avoid resource occupation, which can be embedded in the entire network.

Recent progress on intelligent fault diagnosis (IFD) has greatly depended on deep representation learning and plenty of labeled data. However, machines often operate with various working conditions or the target task has different distributions with the collected data used for training (the domain shift problem). Besides, the newly collected test data in the target domain are usually unlabeled, leading to unsupervised deep transfer learning based (UDTL-based) IFD problem. Although it has achieved huge development, a standard and open source code framework as well as a comparative study for UDTL-based IFD are not yet established. In this paper, we construct a new taxonomy and perform a comprehensive review of UDTL-based IFD according to different tasks. Comparative analysis of some typical methods and datasets reveals some open and essential issues in UDTL-based IFD which are rarely studied, including transferability of features, influence of backbones, negative transfer, physical priors, etc. To emphasize the importance and reproducibility of UDTL-based IFD, the whole test framework will be released to the research community to facilitate future research. In summary, the released framework and comparative study can serve as an extended interface and basic results to carry out new studies on UDTL-based IFD. This report conducted an evaluation of the initial implementation of Reading Roots 5 and determined the program's impacts on students' reading outcomes. The study employed a one-group, pre-post correlational study design. Overall, participating students' reading achievement and fluency increased over the period when RR5 was implemented. This pilot study demonstrates the promise of RR5 for raising students' reading outcomes. This discovery has important implications in the post-COVID time.

Success for All Foundation (SFAF) is a non-profit organization that strives to enable every child to read and succeed. Its core value is built upon implementing evidence-based and research-proven programs to enhance students' literacy skills. Sirius Thinking, Ltd., is a world-renowned children's media production company that specializes in combining educational content with animated, memorable, and appealing media experiences to increase students' learning engagement. These two organizations worked together under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to develop a pilot project for Reading "Between the Lions" called Reading Roots 5th Edition (RR5). Reading "Between the Lions" brings the famous public television series "Between the Lions" into classrooms daily to enhance teachers' instruction. Building upon the proven instructional power of SFAF's original Reading Roots curriculum, RR5 integrates Reading "Between the Lions" as an additional resource. The goal of RR5 is to improve first grade students' reading skills through highly engaging, fast-paced teacher instruction, and partner-based practice activities, built around a synthetic phonics approach to early reading, supplemented by targeted media elements. Simply speaking, RR5 is a multimedia classroom instructional program that leverages technology to engage students and customize literacy instruction with instructional videos and collaborative games. SFAF and Sirius Thinking contracted with the Center for Research and Reform in Education (CRRE) at Johns Hopkins University in February 2021 to conduct an evaluation of the initial implementation of RR5 and determine the program's impacts on students' reading outcomes. The evaluation found that overall participating students' reading achievement and fluency increased over the period when RR5 was implemented.

Medical imaging is playing a more and more important role in clinics. However, there are several issues in different imaging modalities such as slow imaging speed in MRI, radiation injury in CT and PET. Therefore, accelerating MRI, reducing radiation dose in CT and PET have been ongoing research topics since their invention. Usually, acquiring less data is a direct but important strategy to address these issues. However, less acquisition usually results in aliasing artifacts in reconstructions. Recently, deep learning (DL) has been introduced in medical image reconstruction and shown potential on significantly speeding up MR reconstruction and reducing radiation dose. In this paper, we propose a general framework on combining the reconstruction model with deep learning to maximize the potential of deep learning and model-based reconstruction, and give the examples to demonstrate the performance and requirements of unrolling different algorithms using deep learning., Comment: part of the preliminary work will be presented at MICCAI2019

For conventional computed tomography (CT) image reconstruction tasks, the most popular method is the so-called filtered-back-projection (FBP) algorithm. In it, the acquired Radon projections are usually filtered first by a ramp kernel before back-projected to generate CT images. In this work, as a contrary, we realized the idea of image-domain backproject-filter (BPF) CT image reconstruction using the deep learning techniques for the first time. With a properly designed convolutional neural network (CNN), preliminary results demonstrate that it is feasible to reconstruct CT images with maintained high spatial resolution and accurate pixel values from the highly blurred back-projection image, i.e., laminogram. In addition, experimental results also show that this deconvolution-based CT image reconstruction network has the potential to reduce CT image noise (up to 20%), indicating that patient radiation dose may be reduced. Due to these advantages, this proposed CNN-based image-domain BPF type CT image reconstruction scheme provides promising prospects in generating high spatial resolution, low-noise CT images for future clinical applications.
