A rootkit is cloaked software that infiltrates an operating system or a database with the intention to escape detection, resist removal, and perform a specific operation. Many rootkits are designed to invade the "root," or kernel, of the program, and therefore operate without announcing their presence to the owner of the computer. Although some rootkits are written with noble intentions (e.g., to strengthen an anti-virus package), true rootkits have a malicious purpose. A rootkit infection can render a compromised computer system vulnerable to attacks and corruption. Rootkits are named for their origin in Linux systems, but the number of rootkits that attack Microsoft operating systems has recently proliferated. Not only are rootkits difficult to detect and assess, but at times the only effective way to remove them is to do a clean installation of the entire operating system. Recent discoveries of rootkits in other venues prove that the problem is spreading and is a major concern for administrators in information security. This paper presents a brief history of the development of rootkits and their possible effects.Prominent cases involving rootkits are described.The paper concludes with an overview of methods to prevent rootkits and to (hopefully) eradicate one that has infected an operating system. This article discusses the proposed open access (OAA) archiving among publishers. This does not require the articles to be published in author-pays OA journals, but simply that published research be made freely available on the Web, whatever publishing route is taken. The stress on OAA has given significant traction to the self-archiving program. Since publishers have historically taken a highly proprietary approach to their business, enforcing OA on them would likely be significant. Not only have they routinely acquired the copyright of papers they publish, but they have also often sought to acquire exclusivity retrospectively too. As researchers began exploring the potential of the Internet, many publishers were initially keen to be involved. Former professor Eberhard Hilf points out that the first response of most publishers to researchers posting and organizing research on the Internet was indifference. For years publishers viewed services like PhysNet and Math-Net as offering no threat. But as publishers began to view the embryonic OA movement as a threat to their traditional print journals, they stopped talking to OA advocates in order to hold on to what they had. Publishers began to migrate their closed model to the new online environment, developing powerful new electronic platforms designed to lock research papers behind a subscription firewall.

Argues that the use of the Internet in libraries threatens the United States Federal Depository Library Program, which serves to make government information available to the public. How funding reductions resulted in the decision to halt the use of paper documents and disseminate them only online; Possible problems, including access, the lack of multiple authentic copies of documents and cost for agencies required to make their publications available on the Web.

The article looks at the development of The Vietnam Project, which provides digital information resources. Texas Tech University (TTU), Lubbock, is ramping up The Vietnam Project (www.vietnam.ttu.edu/vietnamcenter) with several massive digitization initiatives that will make major resources far more accessible. Launched in 1989, the project consists of two units, The Vietnam Center and The Virtual Vietnam Archive, along with smaller subdivisions: The Oral History Project, The Vietnam Archive, and The Teachers' Resource Web. The project was the brainchild of TTU history professor and navy veteran Jim Reckner, now its director, and a group of local Vietnam veterans, who approached the Board of Regents, which embraced the project. After existing on paper for more than a decade, the project began incorporating a virtual archive in 2001 using a collection management system called STAR/ Museums from Cuadra Associates (www.cuadra.com). The project continually receives materials from veterans -- roughly 1500 total, including 465 in the last year alone.

This article features the Scopus abstracting and indexing (A&I) project of Elsevier, the scientific, technical, and health limb of the Reed Elsevier. This A&I project has 4,000 STM sources from 4,000 publishers and offers cross-discipline access to more than 27 million abstracts and citations, stretching back to 1966, and includes cited references from 1996 onwards. Harriet Bell, senior marketing manager for Scopus, said the A&I project was started on a hunch that there was gap that Elsevier could fill by providing one interface that would allow researchers to browse, search and navigate all science literature and all of the related information on the Web. For this project, Elsevier worked with 21 libraries in the U.S., Great Britain, Japan and Australia and selected the University of Toronto in Ontario as its development partner. Aside from being user-friendly, Scopus employs a link resolver that shows within search results which documents has the user full access to--before they click. Librarians can upload their subscription list into the system as well as add links to show which results patrons can order from a document delivery service or obtain in a paper copy. Scopus also allows researchers to set up alerts that will notify them when a new article of interest comes out.

The author reports that EBSCO Publishing Inc. has become the exclusive distributor of the historical digital archive and genealogy database www.footnote.com. The database includes 55 million images that are not available other locations online. The author states that the images include historic documents such as historical newspapers, material relating from the Civil War and naturalization papers.

The article examines how Phil Davis, life sciences bibliographer at Cornell University, is shaking up the scholarly community with his discovery of duplicate articles in Emerald/MCB University Press journals. According to Davis, he has found hundreds of examples of the same article published in more than one journal in at least 73 Emerald/MCB journals over 30 years. In response to Davis's allegations, Emerald undertook its own study and identified 560 republished papers from 1989 to 2004, about 1.1 percent of its total database content. Emerald promises it is "updating the database to ensure all attributions are fully visible [including] notification of subsequent publication as well as first publication" and has addressed in-depth Davis's findings and allegations.

This article focuses on the plan of Bowker Business Research (BBR) to help solicit corporate funding for a library collection of Envirofiche, a BBR microfiche subscription service of major journals, speeches, conference proceedings, symposia papers, reports, and studies covering environmental topics. Blighted by the Exxon Valdez disaster, corporations have been seeking to improve their image with today's green consumer, and BBR believes libraries which are facing increasing budget cuts of specialized information sources provide the perfect outlet for image enhancement. It is a benefit of major corporations to establish a positive presence in the public according to BBR vice president and publisher Ralph C. Ferragamo. Local corporate sponsors donate Envirofiche text from 1971 to the present as well as its print and CD-ROM indexes. BBR contributes fiche cabinets to house the collection. BBR will also conduct training seminars for library personnel. The sponsorship remains somewhat flexible. Elizabeth Wachendorfer, a campus development officer at the University of Houston in Texas expressed her interest in the BBR plan, but would like to have sponsorship of a continuing subscription and computer equipment compatible to the current library system.
