"The French Revolution and Social Democracy: The Transmission of History and Its Political Uses in Germany and Austria, 1889–1934" by Jean-Numa Ducange explores the significance of the French Revolution to German-speaking Social Democracy. The three volumes of Erinnerungen (Memories) are a compilation of life stories of Austrian Jews who succeeded in escaping Nazi persecution in their native country. They are stories of individuals and their families who were wealthy, welleducated and well-established and succeeded in reaching Australia before the outbreak of the Second World War. Their struggles to integrate, acculturate and assimilate into Australian society is at the core of each individual story. All three volumes contain a wealth of photographs, letters and documents. Postmodernist art is so dense a tissue of references to past art-of quotations, appropriations, emulations, borrowings, transfers and iterations-that the term "eclectic" can no longer have a use in the working vocabulary of the art critic. The enjewelment of the flesh, the escape into the status of gold and emeralds, casts the eroticism of these works in a special light. It is not the robust, randy kind of eroticism, where the flesh sings, nor the prurient eroticism of the pornography it some times resembles. It is, instead, the eroticism of the mystic, a technique for slipping out of the flesh, where intense pleasure-or pain-is a means rather than a goal.

Vienna today is a comfortable, prosperous place, whose population utilizes its considerable amenities with a sense of personal security that has vanished from urban centers nearly everywhere else. Its brilliant system of public transportation, with shining subway cars and red buses fluttering flags, arouses envy in New Yorkers. The most widely known contemporary artist in Austria is beyond question Friedrich Hundertwasser, probably the only living artist ordinary Viennese know by name and can recognize.

In her approach, Volkmann opts for gender equity, rather than gender equality, thereby separating horizontal difference from vertical hierarchy (p. 85).
