This paper presents the implementation of the parallel hybrid implicit-explicit finite-difference timedomain (HIE-FDTD) method using the Message Passing Interface (MPI) library. The method proves to be very effective in simulating large-scale three-dimensional electromagnetic problems with fine structures in one direction. For the decomposition of the computational volume in the HIE-FDTD method, an MPI Cartesian 2D topology is implemented, allowing arbitrary division of the volume in two directions. Derived data types provided in the MPI library are employed to optimize inter-process communication. High accuracy and efficiency are subsequently demonstrated through a numerical example of a frequency-selected surface (FSS). It shows that the proposed method is very suitable for parallel computing, and the parallel efficiency maintains above 80% for different numbers of processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Conceiving – Designing – Implementing – Operating (CDIO) Initiative identifies itself as a global educational framework for producing the next generation of engineers. The purpose of this systematic review is to provide an overview of trends and to consider how these may be optimised for the continued evolution of the initiative. This systematic review follows PRISMA guidelines and is preregistered on The Open Science Framework (OSF). The review includes all publications within the CDIO knowledge library between 2010 and 2020 (N = 898). Each of the publications was categorised as Advances in CDIO, CDIO Implementation and Engineering Educational Research. The initial screening identified the popularity of publishing articles discussing CDIO implementation and the notable decline in CDIO publications. A second screening took place that included all the publications in the Engineering Educational Research category. Some of the findings include: 1) 43% of publications have links with Nordic institutions. 2) Sweden is the most active country. 3) 81% of the publications are completed collaboratively; however, only 22% are cross institutional collaborations. The paper concludes with three main suggestions for future research: 1) Enhancing evidence-based practice 2) Support of blended learning research and 3) Further development of collaboration & replication efforts. The article reports on the guidelines for the preservation of paper records and collections in libraries such as the University of Colorado's Norlin Library. The "Environmental Guidelines for the Storage of Paper Records," has been considered as the authoritative standard for the preservation of library collections. However, the contents of the guidelines do not necessarily fit older library facilities eventhough these facilities try its best to achieve the conditions. In the case of the Norlin Library, its heating and ventilation industry (HVAC) was adjusted to achieve the relative humidity and temperature.

Due to the desire for more student space at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, the Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center reviewed its serial holdings both in the library and in its offsite storage facility and determined which titles to retain and discard. This paper will briefly describe the selection process and then discuss the methods and phases of the project used to discard material in two shelving locations including auctioning material, donating material to another library, removing unselected material, and repurposing material for a decorative noise-abatement wall. This paper will also discuss the process of integrating items selected for retention from two shelving locations in separate buildings into one shelving location. As society emerges from an unprecedented pandemic that saw the closure of libraries, schools, and universities worldwide, the potential lasting impacts on institutions, professions, and communities can begin to be assessed. Through a bibliometric study of COVID-19-related library publishing, combined with thematic coding of article abstracts, this paper provides an initial glimpse into the impacts of the pandemic on library operations, services, collections, and the workforce. Two hundred thirty-seven journal articles published in 2020 about libraries and the pandemic were identified and analyzed. These articles indicate broad cross-sectoral, global impacts on libraries and librarianship. This analysis provides a baseline for future research on the lasting effects of the pandemic on the field. The article focuses on the controversy related to the book "Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper," by Nicholson Baker. The book subsequently received the National Book Critics Circle Award. In this book Nicholson gives a history of the decisions made by the institutional elite of the library science profession beginning in the late 1940s until 1980s or even until 1999 to destroy large numbers of newspaper collections, and books, with the goal of saving them by micro-filming. The book received three types of reponses, first those of scholars, secondly those of librarians in elite institutions and thirdly, the responses of journalists. One can speculate that librarians who had either helped make the decisions described in the book, or had carried them out, or defended them, felt themselves under personal attack by Baker's thesis. The final importance of Baker's book lies not in whether he completely, and with unfailing objectivity, presents the activities of the past, or presents a list of changes that may already have been underway at the time of publication.

In their efforts to digitize public service delivery, countries increasingly use algorithms based on mathematical models, data and/or a combination of different administrative datasets to issue decisions, but recent studies point towards challenges around citizens' understanding, accessing, and filing objections to such automated decisions. This paper focuses on the social infrastructure supporting citizens that struggle with accessing such services. To address this, we ask: How does the social infrastructure affect administrative burdens associated with digital government services? This is studied in the Dutch context through expert interviews and observations of support programs in libraries. We find that although libraries as primary sites for these services may pose the disadvantage of being more difficult to reach for low‐literate citizens, advantages are their organizational structure at the local level as well as their currently changing role to include a growing range of services, including (digital) skills courses. Chatbots have experienced significant growth over the past decade, with a proliferation of new applications across various domains. Previous studies also demonstrate the trend of new technologies, especially artificial intelligence, being adopted in libraries. The purpose of this study is to determine the current research priorities and findings in the field of chatbots in libraries. A systematic literature review was performed utilising the PRISMA checklist and the databases Scopus and Web of Science, identifying 5734 records. Upon conducting the first screening, abstract screening, full-text assessment, and quality assessments guided by the CASP appraisal checklist, 19 papers were deemed suitable for inclusion in the review. The results of the review indicate that the majority of the existing studies were empirical in nature (primarily adopting qualitative methods) and technology reviews with a focus on reviewing the implementation and maintenance, design, evaluation, characteristics, and application of chatbots. The chatbots of interest were mainly text-based and guided chatbots, with closed-source tools with access portals mostly built on library web pages or integrated with social software. The research findings primarily concerned the development models and necessary tools and technologies, the application of chatbots in libraries. Intellectual property includes not only copyright but also industrial property (IP), which consists of inventions (patents), trademarks, industrial designs and models, and designations of origin. In order to identify the importance of these competencies of non-lawyers, e.g. engineers, managers, in companies, an online survey was conducted in some European countries as part of the Erasmus + IPEDU project in 2021. This paper presents the results (n = 175) from four countries: Croatia, Portugal, Romania, and Slovenia. The results provide information about the perception of the importance of IP knowledge in industrial companies, the benefits of this knowledge for the companies, the implementation of training for employees, and the hiring practices of external experts. IP knowledge seems to be very important for companies, but they rarely organize IP training for their own employees. They require IP skills from job applicants and expect the education system to provide this knowledge. Important differences were found between countries, especially in the perceived usefulness of IP knowledge, skills, and training. As IP knowledge becomes increasingly important in industry and society, the study offers a new perspective on the importance of including IP in the education system and the need for non-lawyers to be knowledgeable in this area. Medical libraries in Sweden are digitised to a large extent, technically advanced and developing rapidly. This paper investigates technological trends among Swedish medical libraries in the near and distant future and their application within different areas of library activities. The authors also present a roadmap to increase technological developments within medical libraries in Sweden. Current technological trends include digital collaboration tools, mobile technologies and visualisation. Artificial intelligence, big data and smart technologies are upcoming trends. Technologies are applied within all areas of library activities, but preconditions for academic and hospital libraries differ. The Michigan State University Libraries (MSUL) digital repository contains numerous collections of openly available material. Since 2016, the digital repository has been using Faceted Application of Subject Terminology (FAST) subject headings as its primary subject vocabulary in order to streamline faceting, display, and search. The MSUL FAST use case presents some challenges that are not addressed by existing MARC-focused FAST tools. This paper will outline the MSUL digital repository team's justification for including FAST headings in the digital repository as well as workflows for adding FAST headings to Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) metadata, their maintenance, and utilization for discovery. Facets are widely encountered in information and knowledge organization, but there is much disparity in the use and understanding of concepts such as "facet," "facet analysis," and "faceted classification." The paper traces the history of these ideas and how they have been employed in different contexts. What may be termed the classical school of faceted classification is given some prominence, through the ideas of Ranganathan and the Classification Research Group, but other interpretations are also explored. This paper is the result of a request from Library of Congress leadership to assess pre-coordinated versus post-coordinated subject cataloging. It argues that the disadvantages of pre-coordinated subject strings are perennial and continue to hinder progress, while the advantages of post-coordinated subject cataloging have expanded, resulting in new opportunities to serve the needs of catalogers and end users alike. The consequences of retaining pre-coordinated headings will have long-term impacts that heavily out-weigh the short-term challenges of transitioning to new cataloging practices. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to show how quality information materials are maintained in Kenyan museum libraries by examining collection development policy, skills and processes used by librarians in acquisition. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 137 respondents, which included 130 registered library users and seven members of staff, completed the questionnaires. This included the principal librarian, for whom an interview schedule was used to collect the required data. A pilot study to ensure data validity and reliability was carried out at the Kenya Medical Research Institute Library. Statistical Packages for Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyze the research data. Findings: The findings, which were presented both textually and graphically, show that the National Museum of Kenya library lacks a collection development policy to guide the acquisition process, as well as a diverse set of information resources that are both comprehensive and current to meet the current user information needs. Furthermore, the key impediment to the acquisition of information materials was revealed to be financial constraints, and there was a positive effort to involve library users in the acquisition process. Research limitations/implications: The study focus on library users and library staff at the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) library in Nairobi, it may not be, therefore, representative of the acquisition processes at all Kenyan museum libraries. Although NMK has other branches across the country, they were not included in this study. Practical implications: This paper purposes to provide the Kenyan museum library with important information about maintaining quality information materials from the perspectives of librarians and library users. Despite efforts to improve information materials, the management faces financial challenges. Social implications: The study unveils underlying picture in selection and acquisition practices which will inform on meeting library users information needs. In this paper I reflect on the odds and ends of research – that is to say, the fragments of notes, the miscellanea of drafts, the offcuts of applications, the keepsakes of fieldwork; in short, the archival remains of unfinished research. Through a discussion of failure, loss, the incomplete, and the abandoned, the paper poses questions about the threshold of endings. At what point does something fall by the wayside, never to be returned to? More pragmatically, what might we do with our "loss libraries"? This paper looks at a number of library projects that, together, have improved the quality of the college's library catalogue. Through a necessary project involving searching for thousands of titles on a title-by-title basis, several smaller related library catalogue projects developed resulting in overall catalogue enhancement and improvement. Ultimately, this work has resulted in an increase in usage of our physical resources. Purpose: The aim of this paper is to introduce a holistic decolonial lens for Library and Information Studies (LIS). As such it centres in the following questions: what does decolonisation mean in the context of LIS? How can a holistic approach help improve our understanding of the field? Design/methodology/approach: This is a conceptual paper that draws on theoretical analysis and discussion with in-depth examination of two cases of librarianship and information for development. Findings: The paper presents a decolonial framework for interpreting and comprehending LIS-specific issues. As a result, we believe it is critical to recognise three interconnected types of colonial legacies and identify ways in which LIS academics and practitioners can consider these in the context of their research and work. Research limitations/implications: The paper introduces a holistic framework for thinking about decoloniality in the LIS discipline. Further work should consider how this framework can be useful for other LIS fields. Practical implications: The framework is of practical significance for LIS academics and practitioners who wish to take a decolonial approach to their research and thinking. This paper sought to obtain a deeper understanding of the conversion strategies adopted by the selected South African university libraries and the subsequent challenges experienced thereof. This paper presents a case study for which data were collected through a qualitative-quantitative approach from the three public university libraries in the Gauteng province of South Africa, which had converted their spaces into the research commons (RC). The study sample consisted of the RC manager/librarian from each of the three libraries. The qualitative part of the study employed face-to-face interviews, non-participatory observation and information from websites. The quantitative approach used a structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using an inductive approach. Current library literature on RC does not encompass a holistic approach regarding how the conversion was planned and the challenges thereof. The study findings and recommendations include the formation of a research library consortium (RLC), ongoing user and space assessment to adjust services and resources to suit changing technologies, postgraduate needs and learning styles. Challenges included model misconception by librarians; planning and change management deficiencies; homogeneous staffing models; and budgetary constraints. The study recommends that essential conditions of the cultural commons (CC) be incorporated as the foundational RC conversion process to create a pool of collaboratively endorsed resources to enhance the mission of their parent institutions. The study also recommends that conversion should occur within a planned and collaborative framework to avoid the “tragedy of the commons” implementation and to preserve benefits derived for future sustainability. This paper examines the cardinal benefits of library consortium which is the resource sharing. Resource sharing aims at maximizing collection and services of libraries and information centres at minimum cost. Various sources of information (primary and secondary literature) were perused to view the essentiality of resource sharing in carrying out effective and efficient library and information services to users. The paper also highlighted the requirements needed for successful resource sharing practices among libraries. The significance/benefits of resource sharing as it relates to economic, developmental, academic/research as well as social life of librarians and library personnel were clearly stated. An ideal library networking model for resource sharing as well as examples such as DELNET, INFLIBNET, GILLDDNET and NULIB were presented. Various challenges militating against effective resource sharing were highlighted. The study concluded that resource sharing is inevitable and absolutely a necessary tool for enhancing an all time effective and efficient library and information services. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) is increasingly becoming prevalent in libraries and information centres, promising to improve service delivery and efficiency. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a new concept to be introduced in libraries of India and more particularly in the libraries of Jammu & Kashmir. The technology has helped libraries to create an atmosphere of security and proper vigilance. Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the co-occurrence of keywords related to the sustainable development of libraries. VOSviewer, one of the analysis tools used in this paper, can assess complex networks depending on the degree of connectedness between projects. The concept of sustainable library development is gaining popularity all over the world, and keyword co-occurrence analysis is an effective method for determining how certain research trends are developing fields. In addition, efforts are made to calculate the growth rate of literature, look at the top 10 publishers, nations, and languages with the highest number of pieces. Methodology: Every piece of writing on sustainable development that was published between 2001 and 2020 is included in this study. Data are gathered via the Web of Science (WoS) database. The statistically examined data were presented along with analyses, conclusions, and interpretations in both graphical and written representations. Data analysis and the presentation of statistical information are done using Vosviewer, Microsoft Word, Excel, and the results are displayed in the form of figure, tables, charts, and bar graphs. Findings: In the period from 2001 to 2020, the growth rate of papers rises. The data show that 138 publications, or 16.99%, were published in 2020. The People's Republic of China has the most library publications on the topic of sustainable development of libraries, and Elsevier topped the list of the top 10 publishers with 184 articles. Most of the material is written in English language. While creating maps of co-occurrence of keyword using VOSviewer, terms like "identification," "sustainability," "expression," "sustainable development," and "libraries" appear more frequently. Originality: The data used to determine the output of literature about the sustainable development of libraries was taken from Web of Science, one of the biggest and most reliable databases. The information is unique and has not been published anywhere else. This paper will give readers knowledge of the literary productivity, the top 10 countries, and the languages with the most articles and graphical illustrations of the co-occurrence of keywords. A deep research into the concept of bibliotherapy revealed that it has been existence for a long time and rooted in ancient librarianship. However, the concept has moved from libraries to other corporations and organizations. This paper looks at the expanded role for libraries and librarians in bibliotherapy. Firstly, it discusses bibliotherapy or the combination of literature and healing which is designed to bring healings to library users through their interactions between relevant literature and their personalities as well as the etymology of the concept. Secondly, it expedites the types of bibliotherapy; relationship between bibliotherapy and library science; types of bibliotherapy that could be integrated into library services and principles of use that would promote effective use of the library. The result is creating a roadmap for understanding the need for integration of bibliotherapy in library services and providing an extension of the subject in clinics, hospitals, prisons and rehabilitation centres as well as systematic exploration in their own subject domains. This paper recommends that reading and developmental bibliotherapy in libraries is highly essential and should be effectively and efficiently practiced through proper training of staff, orientation and users' education; libraries should provide consultancy and referral services for users' who might need them and creating the right ambiance through beautiful designs and welcoming staff attitude. The focus of this paper is to examine the roles of library in promoting Reading Habits among students. The paper saw the library as a social service oriented institution aimed at encouraging students to cultivate reading habits. It looked at library as learning environments that provide space, access to resources, activities and services to encourage and support students, teachers, and community learning. The paper also explained the concept of reading and that reading provides the information needed to expand our understanding of thing. The paper defined reading habits as a passion and zeal for reading and outlined its importance to improve the students' comprehension skills, vocabulary, pronunciation, speed, knowledge, and lifelong learning. Indeed good reading habits promote self education which helps in the modification of personality. The paper further recognized the vital roles of parents, teachers, and librarians among others that enable students to embark on reading and developing good reading habits. It also pointed out that libraries should organize programmes, exhibitions, storytelling and so forth and use them to inculcate reading habit on the students. This paper revealed that the cause of poor reading habits are lack of functional library, family background, corruption, lack of interest, teachers failures among other things. Book banning is sweeping schools and libraries across the United States. This paper targets the book ban affecting children and young adult literature. I want to provide a cohesive look at the various attributes that play a role in book banning and censorship of children and young adult books. This paper touches on the process of banning/censoring books, whom these challenges are affecting, readers' rights, and the relevancy of this topic. Briefly, in my introduction, I address the history of book banning and where the motivation for this was initially encouraged. Moreover, the effects of book banning and/or censorship could have serious consequences for generations to come if the population is not made aware of this ever-growing pandemic. Academic libraries worldwide provide knowledge management (KM) services to support university research activities, while some librarians are slowly implementing knowledge management practices. The paper examined librarians' perception of knowledge management in Nigerian university libraries and discovered that they perceived it positively. It also identified KM practices in Nigerian university libraries, such as brainstorming, knowledge sharing and mentoring. However, these practices were not recognized as KM practices and were not officially documented as such. Furthermore, the paper also revealed that the effects of KM on the professional development of academic librarians were positive. Definition: This entry paper considers the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the processes and functions of art and architecture libraries in North America and distinguishes between temporary changes and those that will endure and are here to stay. COVID-19 impacted all aspects of human life, placing tremendous stress on institutions and individuals globally. Academic libraries responded to the crisis by bringing resources to communities remotely and keeping constituents engaged to maintain a sense of normalcy. While libraries in schools of architecture, art, and design, responded similarly to other academic libraries, they also had unique needs. This entry paper is informed by two surveys of art and architecture library staff and faculty, alongside a preliminary literature review. The results of the first survey were published in Art Documentation and the results and analysis of the second survey are forthcoming. Both temporary and long-standing changes were implemented to ensure uninterrupted service in academic institutions. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to understand the emergence of digital reformatting as a technique for preserving information within the cultural heritage preservation community by reviewing historical trends in modern preservation research. Design/methodology/approach: This paper analyzes secondary sources, reviews and historical texts to identify trends in the intellectual and technological histories of preservation research, beginning with the first applications of the scientific method to combating book decay in the early nineteenth to the emergence of digitization techniques in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Findings: This paper identifies five major historical periods in the development of preservation knowledge: the early experimental era; era of microfilm experimentation; era of professionalization; era of digital library research; and the era of digital reformatting and mass digitization; and identifies three major trends in its development: empirical inquiry, standardization and centralization. Research limitations/implications: Findings reflect broad trends in the field of preservation, primarily in a United States context and are limited to the modern era of preservation research. Practical implications: This paper's broad historical overview provides a reference for preservation professionals and students in library science or archives programs. Identifying historical trends enables practitioners to critically examine their own preservation techniques and make better decisions when adopting and using new preservation technologies. The paper presents periodicals in the field of library and information science published between 2017 and 2021. The journals dealing with the field as their main or major topic were reviewed, as well as those that have established sections dedicated to librarianship, but are focused on other areas. The analysis is based on the research of sources via COBIB.SR database, and the titles with the hit of at least one issue published during the period 2017-2021 were included. The titles of serial publication available in the collection of the National Library of Serbia were reviewed, as well as those available online. The paper examines the current situation of the professional publishing and its importance for the development of the scientific discipline and practice. At the same time, journals addressing library practice along with other areas were analyzed – literature, arts, history and local topics. The text is an effort to examine the current trends related to publishing periodicals dealing with the theory and practice of librarianship. The results show that the number of scientific journals in 2021 increased compared to the previous period. However, significant number of serial publications issued during the analyzed period belongs to the group of professional magazines dealing with librarianship as their main or major topic. Overall, the analysis of Serbian periodicals on subjects related to library and information activities in the past period shows that they acted as means for active participation in scientific communication, exchange of professional experiences, and promotion of libraries. Abstract: Mold deterioration of historical library materials in archives and libraries is a frequent and complex phenomenon that may have important economic and cultural consequences. Compactus shelving is one of the systems utilised for the conservation of library materials, because it allows for a more efficient use of space and protection against dust deposition. However, in the last ten years there have been many reports on single species mould infections within Compactus shelves in spite of conventional control of environmental temperature and humidity to recommended standards. Contamination was commonly characterized by white spots of mycelium, measuring 0.5–1.0 cm in diameter and observed on volume binding, especially those of leather, parchment or textile. Until now, the identification of the causal agent at species level has not been reported since attempts to grow it on media for subsequent identification were unsuccessful. Using a range of sampling techniques, including adhesive tape and nitrocellulose membrane, and a combination of conventional culturing methods, direct microscopic observations and molecular methods, we have for the first time identified to species level the fungus causing infections inside Compactus shelves. Institutions of advanced education and research, through their libraries, invest substantially in licensed online resources. Only authorized users of an institution are entitled to access licensed online resources. Seamless on-campus access to licensed resources happens mostly through Internet Protocol (IP) address authentication. Increasingly, licensed online resources are accessed by authorized users from off-campus locations as well. Libraries will, therefore, need to ensure seamless off-campus access to authorized users. Libraries have been using various technologies, including proxy server or virtual private network (VPN) server or single sign-on, to facilitate seamless offcampus access to licensed resources. In this paper, authors share their experience in setting up a Shibboleth-based single sign-on (SSO) access management system at the JRD Tata Memorial Library, Indian Institute of Science, to enable authorized users of the institute to seamlessly access licensed online resources from off-campus locations. Abstract Currently, libraries and other information services are facing new professional challenges in relation to digitization policies and orphan works after the publication of European Directive 2012/28/EU on certain permitted uses of orphan works and Spanish Royal Decree 224/2016. This paper aims to analyse how Spanish library and information centres specialising in theatre and performing arts meet users' textual and non-textual information needs, by respecting copyright issues and being involved in a dynamic and digital environment. For this purpose, an online questionnaire, which was used as a methodological tool, was sent to library directors in February 2018. At the same time, some research questions based on orphan works and digitisation approaches are discussed in the paper, specifically in reference to graphic and audiovisual materials. The process of discovering appropriate resources in digital libraries within universities is important, as it can have a big effect on whether retrieved works are useful to the requester. The improvement of the user experience with the digital library of the University of Novi Sad dissertations (PHD UNS) through the personalization of search results representation is the aim of the research presented in this paper. There are three groups of PHD UNS digital library users: users from the academic community, users outside the academic community, and librarians who are in charge of entering dissertation data. Different types of textual and visual representations were analyzed, and representations which needed to be implemented for the groups of users of PHD UNS digital library were selected. After implementing these representations and putting them into operation in April 2017, the user interface was extended with functionality that allows users to select their desired style for representing search results using an additional module for storing message logs. The stored messages represent an explicit change in the results representation by individual users. Using these message logs and ELK technology stack, we analyzed user behavior patterns depending on the type of query, type of device, and search mode. The analysis has shown that the majority of users of the PHD UNS system prefer using the textual style of representation rather than the visual. Some users have changed the style of results representation several times and it is assumed that different types of information require a different representation style. Also, it has been established that the most frequent change to the visual results representation occurs after users perform a query which shows all the dissertations from a certain time period and which is taken from the advanced search mode; however, there is no correlation between this change and the client's device used. The aim of this paper is to explore the behavior of medical students regarding the use of Electronic books (E-books) and Print books (P-books). The objective of the study is to measure the differences with regards in using E-books and P-books to perceptions behavioral intentions among medical students. Quantitative approach and survey research method was used to conduct this study. The self-administered questionnaire valid by field expert was used to gather the data from sample. The population of this study is all medical college libraries affiliated with University of Health Sciences, Lahore. 25 questionnaires from each medical college to be filled by the students through random sampling technique .The data was analyzed in Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 20th version. The paper found that medical students are satisfied with usage and accessibility of e-books but they preferred p-books. Information literacy emerged in the 1970s to address information needs in an active and critical way. However, the increasing availability of information and the evolution of technology led information literacy to focus more on instrumental aspects and less on its cognitive, axiological, and critical dimensions. As a response, a new wave emerged to explicitly focus on the most critical and emancipatory aspects: Critical Information Literacy (CIL). This concept has been developed in a dynamic and spontaneous way through the various practices and publications on the topic and as a reflection of the social advances in recent decades. In this paper, CIL is presented as a means of action for informational activism to promote changes in society aligned with the values of human rights and social justice. We present a review of the main authors that have worked with CIL, including the active scene in Brazil and its Freirean influence, aiming at systematizing the concept and its main characteristics in a global landscape dominated by misinformation and absence of informational and digital competences. Purpose: Libraries face an uncertain situation in present times of the "digital revolution" while every single sector moved online. The purpose of this paper is to search and propose potential library actions as response to the challenge of the peer-to-peer (p2p) sharing platform revolution in business models, a revolution to gain efficiency and to protect the environment. Design/methodology/approach: This research focused on integrating economics and library concepts based on a selective literature review and real-world interaction. The main concern is to connect library possibilities with the emergence of p2p digital platforms, which has enabled individuals to make use of underused inventory via fee-based sharing, as a way of obtaining, giving or sharing access to goods and services. The authors balance the existing proposals to achieve how librarians can help. Findings: This paper defines key types of potential applications for platform business models in the sharing economy promoted by librarians and describes their characteristics for the renaissance of the "New libraries". First, "educating" society to face critically the disruptive change in networks of culture and information. Second, "growing" as key reference institutions and community service centres integrating "external" skills. Third, "promoting" the disruptive economy by creation or participation in digital platforms. Fourth, "creating" cooperative markets through social-economic currencies. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to introduce Google Analytics as a format suitable for advanced tracking of reading behavior within web books, set the metrics for measuring the reading behavior of web books and describe the first results of a pilot study. This paper offers suggestions for further deployment of web books and web analytics in digital libraries and evaluating web books' performance. Design/methodology/approach: To understand the reading behavior of web book users, researchers use quantitative research methods based on custom and advanced metrics at Google Analytics. Findings: Google Analytics is a valuable tool for tracking access to individual books and tracking entire web book collections, mainly if researchers use the combination of unique custom and advanced metrics. A pilot study with 190 users uncovered significant results on reading behavior, for example, the strong preference for scrolling over navigation buttons. Research limitations/implications: This pilot study is limited to measuring two web books and 190 users. This study demonstrated a workable setup of metrics for measuring reading behavior; it would be helpful to continue measurement with a larger sample of books and users. Originality/value: Researchers in library and information science currently use web analytics mainly to understand user behavior on the website and in the catalog. Horniman Museum and Gardens, London published a group of visitor guides and handbooks from 1904 to 1977 under the series title "Horniman Museum and Library Publications" to accompany the permanent galleries. This paper presents a bibliography for the series, which covered subjects in zoology and anthropology. The series included 16 publications. Many had multiple editions. Authors were not always identified explicitly, and attribution was assigned to the institution. This paper identifies authors and other notable contributors for each volume. The Horniman stopped assigning new publications to the series at the end of the 1930s; however, new guides and handbooks continued to be published in similar fashion. Some of those later publications asserted continuity, claiming to be new editions. Others did not. Both continuities and breaks reveal aspects of work within the museum environment as well as trends in British museum engagement with its audiences. We are already living in an algorithmic society. AI policies and regulations are now emerging at the same time as more is learned about the implications of bias in machine learning sets, the surveillance risks of smart cities and facial recognition, and automated decision-making by government, among many other applications of AI and machine learning. Each of these issues raises concerns around ethics, privacy, and data protection. This paper introduces some of the key AI regulatory developments to date and engagement by libraries in these processes. While many AI applications are largely emergent and hypothetical in libraries, some mature examples can be identified in research literature searching, language tools for textual analysis, and access to collection data. The paper presents a summary of how library activities such as these are represented in national AI plans and ways that libraries have engaged with other aspects of AI regulation including the development of ethical frameworks. Based on the sector's expertise in related regulatory issues including copyright and data protection, the paper suggests further opportunities to contribute to the future of ethical, trustworthy, and transparent AI. • 3D fragments could offer new opportunities for drug discovery. • 25 papers (from 2011-mid May 2020) on the synthesis of 3D fragments are reviewed. • Three distinct synthetic strategies to 3D fragments are identified. • A combined workflow of computational design and one other strategy is proposed. In fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD), there is a developing appreciation that 3D fragments could offer opportunities that are not provided by 2D fragments. This review provides an overview of the synthetic strategies that have been used to prepare 3D fragments, as discussed in 25 papers published from 2011 to mid-May 2020. Three distinct strategies are highlighted: (i) diversity-oriented synthesis; (ii) the synthesis and diversification of scaffolds; and (iii) computational design and synthesis (where 3D fragments were computationally enumerated and filtered on the basis of computationally generated 3D shape descriptors and other properties). We conclude that a workflow that combines computational design and one other strategy, together with a consideration of fragment properties, 3D shape and 'fragment sociability', could allow 3D fragments to feature more widely in fragment libraries and could facilitate fragment-to-lead optimisation. In the coded caching problem, as originally formulated by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, a server communicates via a noiseless shared broadcast link to multiple users that have local storage capability. In order for a user to decode its demanded file from the coded multicast transmission, the demands of all the users must be globally known, which may violate the privacy of the users. To overcome this privacy problem, Wan and Caire recently proposed several schemes that attain coded multicasting gain while simultaneously guarantee information theoretic privacy of the users’ demands. In Device-to-Device (D2D) networks, the demand privacy problem is further exacerbated by the fact that each user is also a transmitter, which appears to be needing the knowledge of the files demanded by the remaining users in order to form its coded multicast transmission. This paper shows how to solve this seemingly infeasible problem. The main contribution of this paper is the development of new achievable and converse bounds for D2D coded caching that are to within a constant factor of one another when privacy of the users’ demands must be guaranteed even in the presence of colluding users (i.e., when some users share cached contents and demanded file indices). First, a D2D private caching scheme is proposed, whose key feature is the addition of virtual users in the system in order to “hide” the demands of the real users. By comparing the achievable D2D private load with an existing converse bound for the shared-link model without demand privacy constraint, the proposed scheme is shown to be order optimal, except for the very low memory size regime with more files than users. Second, in order to shed light into the open parameter regime, a new achievable scheme and a new converse bound under the constraint of uncoded cache placement (i.e., when each user stores directly a subset of the bits of the library) are developed for the case of two users, and shown to be to within a constant factor of one another for all system parameters. Finally, the two-user converse bound is extended to any number of users by a cut-set type argument. With this new converse bound, the virtual users scheme is shown to be order optimal in all parameter regimes under the constraint of uncoded cache placement and user collusion. The goal of this paper is to explain the basic concepts of project management and the main processes of project management. Also, the goal is to contribute to a better understanding of this business model in the library operations and its application in improving the success and efficiency in the realization of its basic mission. Approach/methodology/design. The paper uses the desk research method as the basic method, using the method of observation and analysis of the relevant online sites of Croatian libraries with the aim of analysing the existing typical and most common projects in libraries. The article includes explanations of the project life cycle and the corresponding stages of the project. The basic processes of project management are explained, starting from their planning and execution to supervision and closing. In addition to the listed contents, the topics related to the scope of the project and time management of the project, as well as the costs, resources and human potential of the project, are also covered to an appropriate extent. The results of this research indicate a significant number of different types of projects organized in Croatian libraries and present their role and high success in terms of start-up, execution and completion. The limitations of this study stem from the fact that the research on project management was conducted in public libraries of the Republic of Croatia. Practical implications. With its content and research results, the research can contribute to a better understanding of the possibilities and benefits of launching and implementing projects in libraries and related institutions and organizations. Social implications. Given the role of the library as an institution of special social interest, the efficient and successful project management in libraries has a corresponding broader social significance and potential impact in various fields, such as education, science, information, culture, economy and the use of leisure time. Aim. This paper presents the topic of migration and the role that libraries play in the process of migrants' adaptation and integration. The purpose of the paper, based on a literature review, is to present insights into library services in relation to the needs of migrants, the migrants' perception of libraries and obstacles to using libraries. Approach/methodology/design. The methodological approach in the paper is based on the review and analysis of literature published in the field of information sciences on the topic of libraries and information needs of migrants. The identified knowledge is synthesized at the end of the work in the form of recommendations to libraries. Results. The paper identified and described information needs of migrants and the most commonly used sources of information, the services libraries offer to migrants through their programmes, collections and space, and the barriers migrants face when using libraries. The role of libraries in the development of a multicultural society and the importance of reading in building and maintaining their identity were also analysed. Most of the topics presented are related to services and needs in relation to the country of immigration. There is a gap in the existing literature on the information needs and library services of emigrants in relation to the homeland. Limitations. Terminologically, the paper uses the term migrants as a general concept and considers issues at a more general level concerning various groups of migrants. Although most services are viewed in the context of public libraries, the results are also applicable to other types of libraries for which migrants are a potential user group, such as academic libraries. Originality/value. The paper provides an overview of fundamental insights into library services for migrants and can benefit libraries in developing services for migrants, as well as other stakeholders for whom information needs, integration, identity preservation and wellbeing of migrants are important. Dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) consists of several banks, which are shared resources among cores. Memory interference is caused by sharing with banks among cores, which results in overall system performance reduction. This will exacerbate the problem because shared libraries are commonly used in modern operating systems. The physical memories used by shared libraries are often distributed throughout all banks in DRAM, and shared library codes are regularly run. This will result in a large number of row-buffer conflicts and a decrease in system performance. This paper proposes a new shared library awareness and bank partitioning-based mechanism (SBM) that takes into account inter-thread interference caused by shared libraries and assigns allocated DRAM banks to specific cores rather than processes, thus taking advantage of bank-level parallelism (BLP) and improving system performance isolation. We conducted several experiments to assess the degree of performance isolation achieved by SBM. The findings indicate that SBM significantly enhanced performance isolation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Libraries play a crucial and multi-faceted role in the implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP) of 2020 in higher education in India. By utilizing the potential of libraries as centers of learning, higher education institutions can establish a more inclusive and just learning environment according to the NEP's vision. The primary focus of this study is to comprehensively elaborate on the multi-faceted involvement of libraries, including the active promotion of digital literacy, cultivation of research efforts and innovative initiatives, and facilitation of an all-encompassing and impartial approach to acquiring information for all segments of society. The article notes that libraries can contribute to the promotion of digital literacy, which is a critical aspect of the NEP. As the use of digital technologies in education increases, libraries play a vital role in providing access to a wide range of digital resources, such as ebooks, online databases, and various digital learning materials. They can provide instructional guidance and assistance to both students and faculty members on the effective use of digital tools and platforms, leading to a significant improvement in their digital literacy skills. Libraries also offer access to a vast array of scholarly resources, including academic journals, research papers, and books. This accessibility empowers students and faculty members to engage in significant research endeavors. They also provide guidance and direction for conducting literature reviews, accessing relevant research databases, and keeping up with the latest developments in various disciplines. Therefore, libraries serve as collaborative spaces for interdisciplinary research and innovation, facilitating knowledge sharing and networking among students and faculty members, which is essential for NEP 2020. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to look into the concept of blockchain technology which stores data in a distributed, tamper-resistant setting and how this technology may affect the future library and information (LI) centers' operations and policy. It explores the potential benefits and limitations of this technology, for LI centers are the core objectives of this paper. Design/methodology/approach: A systematic review of both academic and practitioner literature was conducted. It followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (2020) standards. Findings: The review shows that the decentralized nature of blockchain will transform the work in libraries and improve the inter-communication among communities. It can provide better privacy of user data thus increasing collaboration. However, there might be technological, financial, legal and social challenges that may act as hurdles to the realization of these goals in the true sense. The overall result shows that by keeping data updated, libraries can evaluate blockchain opportunities and make the best use of this technology. Practical implications: Given the huge investments by industry, academic research that explores potential ramifications and supports libraries is required. The adoption of blockchain was investigated in this study from a variety of perspectives for LI center's while also providing directions for future research. Originality/value: It is evident that globally there is progress in blockchain technology development in terms of research and adoption in many industries, but the intention to adopt blockchain by libraries is still a fantasy.
