Purpose: This paper evaluates the precision of four metasearch engines (MSEs) – DuckDuckGo, Dogpile, Metacrawler and Startpage, to determine which metasearch engine exhibits the highest level of precision and to identify the metasearch engine that is most likely to return the most relevant search results. Design/methodology/approach: The research is divided into two parts: the first phase involves four queries categorized into two segments (4-Q-2-S), while the second phase includes six queries divided into three segments (6-Q-3-S). These queries vary in complexity, falling into three types: simple, phrase and complex. The precision, average precision and the presence of duplicates across all the evaluated metasearch engines are determined. Findings: The study clearly demonstrated that Startpage returned the most relevant results and achieved the highest precision (0.98) among the four MSEs. Conversely, DuckDuckGo exhibited consistent performance across both phases of the study. Research limitations/implications: The study only evaluated four metasearch engines, which may not be representative of all available metasearch engines. Additionally, a limited number of queries were used, which may not be sufficient to generalize the findings to all types of queries. Practical implications: The findings of this study can be valuable for accreditation agencies in managing duplicates, improving their search capabilities and obtaining more relevant and precise results. These findings can also assist users in selecting the best metasearch engine based on precision rather than interface. Originality/value: The study is the first of its kind which evaluates the four metasearch engines. No similar study has been conducted in the past to measure the performance of metasearch engines. Purpose: This study aims to analyse and understand the current state of research in the field of digital marketing in "library and information science". Design/methodology/approach: This study used a "bibliometric research design." A lexical title search was used to obtain the required data set for executing this study, and a comprehensive "indexing and abstracting" database, Web of Science, was used as a data harvesting source. Louvain's clustering algorithm was used for network metrics. Findings: The findings revealed that research productivity and impact have grown considerably over time, indicating significant attention towards digital marketing research in library and information science (LIS). Moreover, the results showed that the overall author collaboration patterns were weak, hence creating room for development in the author's collaboration patterns. Practical implications: The current study could be very beneficial in providing a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the "digital marketing" research field scholarly output in LIS, which can be used by researchers, practitioners and policymakers to guide their work and make informed decisions. Originality/value: The originality of this bibliometric study lies in its comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the current state of research in the field of "digital marketing" in LIS. This study provides a unique and in-depth understanding of the key authors, venues and papers in the field, as well as the trends and patterns in the research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a copy of William Caxton's printing of the Cordyal of the four last and final thinges (Westminster: 24 March 1479) recently acquired by the Brotherton Library, University of Leeds. It bears a gift inscription from Lady Joan Ingoldisthorpe (d. 1494) to the Downes Chantry Chapel at Pott Shrigley, Cheshire, which possessed a small library of books, including several others printed by Caxton, previously known only through an early inventory. It discusses the book's ownership and provenance, the reception of Caxton's printings beyond London, the possible patronage of his edition of John Tiptoft, earl of Worcester's translations of Cicero and Buonaccorso da Montemagno printed by Caxton in 1481, and the early provenance of the unique copy of the Sarum Missal printed in Paris by Guillaume Maynyal for Caxton in 1487 owned by the National Trust at Lyme Park in Cheshire. CRIMINAL law , *CRIMINAL codes , *LEGAL doctrines , *INTELLECTUAL cooperation , *PUBLIC libraries - Abstract
Although criminal law books were comparatively rare before the middle of the eighteenth century, Beccaria's Dei delitti e delle pene (1764) triggered the development of an enormous literature devoted to penal issues (from philosophical foundations to debates related to prisons) in Europe until 1914. In one and a half centuries, more than 20,000 books were published on these issues, of which about half were published in German lands and the remainder in Italy, France, Great Britain/United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands. Both philosophers and sociologists participated to these intellectual exchanges. This paper tries to analyse different ways for measuring the circulation of these texts (translations, quotations especially in footnotes, catalogues of private and public libraries, correspondence and travels). Although the debates were clearly transnational, there were also obstacles in the diffusion of foreign books. After evaluating these linguistic or cultural obstacles and considering the changing contexts between the first and second halves of the nineteenth century, this article outlines three conclusions about the globalisation and non-globalisation of legal concepts during this period. Libraries contain a large amount of organic material, frequently stored with inadequate climate control; thus, mold growth represents a considerable threat to library buildings and their contents. In this essay, we review published papers that have isolated microscopic fungi from library books, shelving, walls, and other surfaces, as well as from air samples within library buildings. Our literature search found 54 published studies about mold in libraries, 53 of which identified fungi to genus and/or species. In 28 of the 53 studies, Aspergillus was the single most common genus isolated from libraries. Most of these studies used traditional culture and microscopic methods for identifying the fungi. Mold damage to books and archival holdings causes biodeterioration of valuable educational and cultural resources. Exposure to molds may also be correlated with negative health effects in both patrons and librarians, so there are legitimate concerns about the dangers of contact with high levels of fungal contamination. Microbiologists are frequently called upon to help librarians after flooding and other events that bring water into library settings. This review can help guide microbiologists to choose appropriate protocols for the isolation and identification of mold in libraries and be a resource for librarians who are not usually trained in building science to manage the threat molds can pose to library holdings. JUSTICE , *BLACK Lives Matter movement , *ORGANIZATIONAL justice , *NEUTRALITY , *LIBRARY science , *SOCIAL justice - Abstract
Purpose: This study introduces Simone Weil's impersonal justice concept and its relevance to libraries' identity and role in societies. The article presents the constituents of impersonal justice and a theoretical justification for the coexistence of neutrality with libraries' commitment to social causes. Design/methodology/approach: Conceptual analysis of 3 Weil's works, 13 scientific articles and 12 libraries' official documents was applied, looking at relevant concepts and findings, contexts of use, arguments and types of authority. Findings: Five constituents of impersonal justice were found: universality, concreteness, unicity, inviolability and inappropriability. Impersonal justice, based on the inviolable value of each individual and the universal expectation of good, allows for a more accurate definition of social justice. Besides, it justifies libraries' commitment to climate change, migrants and Black lives matter, among other causes. Originality/value: In contrast to previous works, this paper focuses on clarifying concepts by applying conceptual analysis to Weil's works, Library and Information Science (LIS) sources in scientific and normative contexts. Additionally, the analysis of arguments and types of authority for justifying claims pro and against neutrality allows the reconstruction of the argumentative discourse beyond the examined sources. This paper presents the implementation of the parallel hybrid implicit-explicit finite-difference timedomain (HIE-FDTD) method using the Message Passing Interface (MPI) library. The method proves to be very effective in simulating large-scale three-dimensional electromagnetic problems with fine structures in one direction. For the decomposition of the computational volume in the HIE-FDTD method, an MPI Cartesian 2D topology is implemented, allowing arbitrary division of the volume in two directions. Derived data types provided in the MPI library are employed to optimize inter-process communication. High accuracy and efficiency are subsequently demonstrated through a numerical example of a frequency-selected surface (FSS). It shows that the proposed method is very suitable for parallel computing, and the parallel efficiency maintains above 80% for different numbers of processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Conceiving – Designing – Implementing – Operating (CDIO) Initiative identifies itself as a global educational framework for producing the next generation of engineers. The purpose of this systematic review is to provide an overview of trends and to consider how these may be optimised for the continued evolution of the initiative. This systematic review follows PRISMA guidelines and is preregistered on The Open Science Framework (OSF). The review includes all publications within the CDIO knowledge library between 2010 and 2020 (N = 898). Each of the publications was categorised as Advances in CDIO, CDIO Implementation and Engineering Educational Research. The initial screening identified the popularity of publishing articles discussing CDIO implementation and the notable decline in CDIO publications. A second screening took place that included all the publications in the Engineering Educational Research category. Some of the findings include: 1) 43% of publications have links with Nordic institutions. 2) Sweden is the most active country. 3) 81% of the publications are completed collaboratively; however, only 22% are cross institutional collaborations. The paper concludes with three main suggestions for future research: 1) Enhancing evidence-based practice 2) Support of blended learning research and 3) Further development of collaboration & replication efforts. The cross platform UX/UI designs, frameworks will attain the targeted spectators rapidly since they are well-suited with numerous operating systems and devices. The greater part of the startup enterprises find it suitable due to its quick progress and turnaround time. The cross-platform UX/UI designs, frameworks are indisputably not only efficient and less unwieldy but beneficial in provisions of time-period, money and efforts. The recent cross platform development and UX/UI design core component based mobile app are involved, synchronized with thousands of third-party or non-third-party libraries which permit the web-developers to rapidly compose-build-deploy the web-applications and websites. The third-party libraries make available to the developers with the exceptional opportunities to incorporate reusable, pre-analyzed-tested software applications which save development of expansion-time, manpower, investment of infrastructure and cost, it allows the developers to focus on the core-components and features of the applications that matter to clients and end-users. But, most the third-party or non-third-party libraries are a source of security threats as vulnerability in one library can compromise an entire server. This research paper proposing integrating of rule based secure parameters for analyzing third-party applications and libraries in cross platform development. The integration of rule based secure parameters chains an effortless deployment of web hardening methods and access control the rule based parameters on interactions between libraries and their local cum global environment, including any dependent library. This research included various end-users, client based decision making-indicators with supporting affecting factors and data matrices which helps to take the accurate decisions to avoid or block unwanted libraries and plug-ins. As society emerges from an unprecedented pandemic that saw the closure of libraries, schools, and universities worldwide, the potential lasting impacts on institutions, professions, and communities can begin to be assessed. Through a bibliometric study of COVID-19-related library publishing, combined with thematic coding of article abstracts, this paper provides an initial glimpse into the impacts of the pandemic on library operations, services, collections, and the workforce. Two hundred thirty-seven journal articles published in 2020 about libraries and the pandemic were identified and analyzed. These articles indicate broad cross-sectoral, global impacts on libraries and librarianship. This analysis provides a baseline for future research on the lasting effects of the pandemic on the field. Despite the fact that the concept of inclusion is increasingly present in Spanish libraries, recent research has shown that libraries are normally still far from being inclusive. After reviewing the main definitions of the concept of inclusive library in the Ibero-American context, the library community is invited to broaden the scope and dimension of the term following the work done in the business sector and in libraries from English-speaking countries. This paper reviews some of the initiatives to achieve inclusion carried out in Spanish libraries and the differentiating aspects that make a library inclusive or not. The paper also offers some guidelines that may bring us closer to the creation of truly inclusive libraries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the controversy related to the book "Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper," by Nicholson Baker. The book subsequently received the National Book Critics Circle Award. In this book Nicholson gives a history of the decisions made by the institutional elite of the library science profession beginning in the late 1940s until 1980s or even until 1999 to destroy large numbers of newspaper collections, and books, with the goal of saving them by micro-filming. The book received three types of reponses, first those of scholars, secondly those of librarians in elite institutions and thirdly, the responses of journalists. One can speculate that librarians who had either helped make the decisions described in the book, or had carried them out, or defended them, felt themselves under personal attack by Baker's thesis. The final importance of Baker's book lies not in whether he completely, and with unfailing objectivity, presents the activities of the past, or presents a list of changes that may already have been underway at the time of publication.

In their efforts to digitize public service delivery, countries increasingly use algorithms based on mathematical models, data and/or a combination of different administrative datasets to issue decisions, but recent studies point towards challenges around citizens' understanding, accessing, and filing objections to such automated decisions. This paper focuses on the social infrastructure supporting citizens that struggle with accessing such services. To address this, we ask: How does the social infrastructure affect administrative burdens associated with digital government services? This is studied in the Dutch context through expert interviews and observations of support programs in libraries. We find that although libraries as primary sites for these services may pose the disadvantage of being more difficult to reach for low‐literate citizens, advantages are their organizational structure at the local level as well as their currently changing role to include a growing range of services, including (digital) skills courses. Chatbots have experienced significant growth over the past decade, with a proliferation of new applications across various domains. Previous studies also demonstrate the trend of new technologies, especially artificial intelligence, being adopted in libraries. The purpose of this study is to determine the current research priorities and findings in the field of chatbots in libraries. A systematic literature review was performed utilising the PRISMA checklist and the databases Scopus and Web of Science, identifying 5734 records. Upon conducting the first screening, abstract screening, full-text assessment, and quality assessments guided by the CASP appraisal checklist, 19 papers were deemed suitable for inclusion in the review. The results of the review indicate that the majority of the existing studies were empirical in nature (primarily adopting qualitative methods) and technology reviews with a focus on reviewing the implementation and maintenance, design, evaluation, characteristics, and application of chatbots. The chatbots of interest were mainly text-based and guided chatbots, with closed-source tools with access portals mostly built on library web pages or integrated with social software. The research findings primarily concerned the development models and necessary tools and technologies, the application of chatbots in libraries. Our systematic review also suggests that studies on chatbots in libraries are still in the early stages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intellectual property includes not only copyright but also industrial property (IP), which consists of inventions (patents), trademarks, industrial designs and models, and designations of origin. In order to identify the importance of these competencies of non-lawyers, e.g. engineers, managers, in companies, an online survey was conducted in some European countries as part of the Erasmus + IPEDU project in 2021. This paper presents the results (n = 175) from four countries: Croatia, Portugal, Romania, and Slovenia. The results provide information about the perception of the importance of IP knowledge in industrial companies, the benefits of this knowledge for the companies, the implementation of training for employees, and the hiring practices of external experts. IP knowledge seems to be very important for companies, but they rarely organize IP training for their own employees. They require IP skills from job applicants and expect the education system to provide this knowledge. Important differences were found between countries, especially in the perceived usefulness of IP knowledge, skills, and training. As IP knowledge becomes increasingly important in industry and society, the study offers a new perspective on the importance of including IP in the education system and the need for non-lawyers to be knowledgeable in this area. Facets are widely encountered in information and knowledge organization, but there is much disparity in the use and understanding of concepts such as "facet," "facet analysis," and "faceted classification." The paper traces the history of these ideas and how they have been employed in different contexts. What may be termed the classical school of faceted classification is given some prominence, through the ideas of Ranganathan and the Classification Research Group, but other interpretations are also explored. Attention is paid not only to the idea of what facet analysis is, and what purpose it serves, but also the language utilized to describe and explain it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is the result of a request from Library of Congress leadership to assess pre-coordinated versus post-coordinated subject cataloging. It argues that the disadvantages of pre-coordinated subject strings are perennial and continue to hinder progress, while the advantages of post-coordinated subject cataloging have expanded, resulting in new opportunities to serve the needs of catalogers and end users alike. The consequences of retaining pre-coordinated headings will have long-term impacts that heavily out-weigh the short-term challenges of transitioning to new cataloging practices. By implementing post-coordinated, faceted vocabularies, the Library of Congress will be investing in the future of libraries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to show how quality information materials are maintained in Kenyan museum libraries by examining collection development policy, skills and processes used by librarians in acquisition. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 137 respondents, which included 130 registered library users and seven members of staff, completed the questionnaires. This included the principal librarian, for whom an interview schedule was used to collect the required data. A pilot study to ensure data validity and reliability was carried out at the Kenya Medical Research Institute Library. Statistical Packages for Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyze the research data. Findings: The findings, which were presented both textually and graphically, show that the National Museum of Kenya library lacks a collection development policy to guide the acquisition process, as well as a diverse set of information resources that are both comprehensive and current to meet the current user information needs. Furthermore, the key impediment to the acquisition of information materials was revealed to be financial constraints, and there was a positive effort to involve library users in the acquisition process. Research limitations/implications: The study focus on library users and library staff at the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) library in Nairobi, it may not be, therefore, representative of the acquisition processes at all Kenyan museum libraries. Although NMK has other branches across the country, they were not included in this study. Practical implications: This paper purposes to provide the Kenyan museum library with important information about maintaining quality information materials from the perspectives of librarians and library users. Despite efforts to improve information materials, the management faces financial challenges. Social implications: The study unveils underlying picture in selection and acquisition practices which will inform on meeting library users information needs. Originality/value: The paper is of value as a case study of Kenya Museums Library. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LIBRARIES , *FIELD research - Abstract
In this paper I reflect on the odds and ends of research – that is to say, the fragments of notes, the miscellanea of drafts, the offcuts of applications, the keepsakes of fieldwork; in short, the archival remains of unfinished research. Through a discussion of failure, loss, the incomplete, and the abandoned, the paper poses questions about the threshold of endings. At what point does something fall by the wayside, never to be returned to? More pragmatically, what might we do with our "loss libraries"? And how might we pick up or return to those concepts, field-sites, or collaborators that we once shared, however temporarily, a trajectory with? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DECOLONIZATION , *LIBRARY science , *LIBRARIES - Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this paper is to introduce a holistic decolonial lens for Library and Information Studies (LIS). As such it centres in the following questions: what does decolonisation mean in the context of LIS? How can a holistic approach help improve our understanding of the field? Design/methodology/approach: This is a conceptual paper that draws on theoretical analysis and discussion with in-depth examination of two cases of librarianship and information for development. Findings: The paper presents a decolonial framework for interpreting and comprehending LIS-specific issues. As a result, we believe it is critical to recognise three interconnected types of colonial legacies and identify ways in which LIS academics and practitioners can consider these in the context of their research and work. Research limitations/implications: The paper introduces a holistic framework for thinking about decoloniality in the LIS discipline. Further work should consider how this framework can be useful for other LIS fields. Practical implications: The framework is of practical significance for LIS academics and practitioners who wish to take a decolonial approach to their research and thinking. We provide questions intended to lead to action. Originality/value: The paper provides a holistic decolonial approach to critically reflect on research and teaching practices in the context of LIS. This paper sought to obtain a deeper understanding of the conversion strategies adopted by the selected South African university libraries and the subsequent challenges experienced thereof. This paper presents a case study for which data were collected through a qualitative-quantitative approach from the three public university libraries in the Gauteng province of South Africa, which had converted their spaces into the research commons (RC). The study sample consisted of the RC manager/librarian from each of the three libraries. The qualitative part of the study employed face-to-face interviews, non-participatory observation and information from websites. The quantitative approach used a structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using an inductive approach. Current library literature on RC does not encompass a holistic approach regarding how the conversion was planned and the challenges thereof. The study findings and recommendations include the formation of a research library consortium (RLC), ongoing user and space assessment to adjust services and resources to suit changing technologies, postgraduate needs and learning styles. Challenges included model misconception by librarians; planning and change management deficiencies; homogeneous staffing models; and budgetary constraints. The study recommends that essential conditions of the cultural commons (CC) be incorporated as the foundational RC conversion process to create a pool of collaboratively endorsed resources to enhance the mission of their parent institutions. The study also recommends that conversion should occur within a planned and collaborative framework to avoid the “tragedy of the commons” implementation and to preserve benefits derived for future sustainability. Definition: This entry paper considers the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the processes and functions of art and architecture libraries in North America and distinguishes between temporary changes and those that will endure and are here to stay. COVID-19 impacted all aspects of human life, placing tremendous stress on institutions and individuals globally. Academic libraries responded to the crisis by bringing resources to communities remotely and keeping constituents engaged to maintain a sense of normalcy. While libraries in schools of architecture, art, and design, responded similarly to other academic libraries, they also had unique needs. This entry paper is informed by two surveys of art and architecture library staff and faculty, alongside a preliminary literature review. The results of the first survey were published in Art Documentation and the results and analysis of the second survey are forthcoming. Both temporary and long-standing changes were implemented to ensure uninterrupted service in academic institutions. Temporary solutions included extending loan periods, quarantining materials, enforcing social distancing, and expanding document delivery. Changes that will endure post-pandemic include the increased acquisition of digital materials, remote instruction and reference consultations, increased resource access, and the utilization of a vast array of technologies. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to understand the emergence of digital reformatting as a technique for preserving information within the cultural heritage preservation community by reviewing historical trends in modern preservation research. Design/methodology/approach: This paper analyzes secondary sources, reviews and historical texts to identify trends in the intellectual and technological histories of preservation research, beginning with the first applications of the scientific method to combating book decay in the early nineteenth to the emergence of digitization techniques in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Findings: This paper identifies five major historical periods in the development of preservation knowledge: the early experimental era; era of microfilm experimentation; era of professionalization; era of digital library research; and the era of digital reformatting and mass digitization; and identifies three major trends in its development: empirical inquiry, standardization and centralization. Research limitations/implications: Findings reflect broad trends in the field of preservation, primarily in a United States context and are limited to the modern era of preservation research. Practical implications: This paper's broad historical overview provides a reference for preservation professionals and students in library science or archives programs. Identifying historical trends enables practitioners to critically examine their own preservation techniques and make better decisions when adopting and using new preservation technologies. Originality/value: This paper provides a unique perspective on the history of preservation knowledge that synthesizes existing historical research in order to identify periods and trends that enable a clearer understanding of digital reformatting in its historical emergence. Abstract: Mold deterioration of historical library materials in archives and libraries is a frequent and complex phenomenon that may have important economic and cultural consequences. Compactus shelving is one of the systems utilised for the conservation of library materials, because it allows for a more efficient use of space and protection against dust deposition. However, in the last ten years there have been many reports on single species mould infections within Compactus shelves in spite of conventional control of environmental temperature and humidity to recommended standards. Contamination was commonly characterized by white spots of mycelium, measuring 0.5–1.0 cm in diameter and observed on volume binding, especially those of leather, parchment or textile. Until now, the identification of the causal agent at species level has not been reported since attempts to grow it on media for subsequent identification were unsuccessful. Using a range of sampling techniques, including adhesive tape and nitrocellulose membrane, and a combination of conventional culturing methods, direct microscopic observations and molecular methods, we have for the first time identified to species level the fungus causing infections inside Compactus shelves. Institutions of advanced education and research, through their libraries, invest substantially in licensed online resources. Only authorized users of an institution are entitled to access licensed online resources. Seamless on-campus access to licensed resources happens mostly through Internet Protocol (IP) address authentication. Increasingly, licensed online resources are accessed by authorized users from off-campus locations as well. Libraries will, therefore, need to ensure seamless off-campus access to authorized users. Libraries have been using various technologies, including proxy server or virtual private network (VPN) server or single sign-on, to facilitate seamless offcampus access to licensed resources. In this paper, authors share their experience in setting up a Shibboleth-based single sign-on (SSO) access management system at the JRD Tata Memorial Library, Indian Institute of Science, to enable authorized users of the institute to seamlessly access licensed online resources from off-campus locations. Abstract Currently, libraries and other information services are facing new professional challenges in relation to digitization policies and orphan works after the publication of European Directive 2012/28/EU on certain permitted uses of orphan works and Spanish Royal Decree 224/2016. This paper aims to analyse how Spanish library and information centres specialising in theatre and performing arts meet users' textual and non-textual information needs, by respecting copyright issues and being involved in a dynamic and digital environment. For this purpose, an online questionnaire, which was used as a methodological tool, was sent to library directors in February 2018. At the same time, some research questions based on orphan works and digitisation approaches are discussed in the paper, specifically in reference to graphic and audiovisual materials.
