The article focuses on Lawrence Steinman, a neurologist from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California who studied the role of protein αB-crystallin (CRYAB), an eye lens protein in the neurological disease multiple sclerosis. The work of Steinman distinguished CRYAB as a central agent in controlling inflammation and programmed cell death in the brain. Steinman's team has also shown that CRYAB likewise tones down many inflammatory pathways and helps in preventing programmed cell death.

During the development of a design for an archival phono preamplifier, the author found a number of conflicting opinions on the nature of the recording curve used for the long-playing microgroove record introduced by American Columbia in 1948. This paper will discuss the various popular views on the Columbia curve, and the method the author used to verify its actual characteristics. This paper (Part II) further illustrates how a staff needs assessment can serve as the foundation for ongoing collaborations between extended care unit staff and consulting clinical researchers. The first phase of the process involved gathering data via a series of semi-structured interviews with staff of a long-term care unit at the Veterans Affair Palo Alto Health Care System. This paper describes the second phase that involved the implementation of a series of interventions aimed at supporting staff in dealing with disruptive and aggressive behavior. The final phase, which is ongoing, is monitoring and refining the interventions based on staff feedback and the results of program evaluation. Such an approach allows interventions to target the concerns and needs of a particular setting. Continuation of initiated interventions and collaboration between researchers and unit staff are two of the indicators that this model has worked. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2006 Polimetrix, Inc. of Palo Alto, CA. fielded the Cooperative Congressional Election Study, the largest study of Congressional elections ever fielded in the US. The project was a joint venture of 38 universities and over 100 political scientists. In this paper, we detail the design and execution of the project, with special attention to the method by which the sample was generated. We show that the estimates from the Common Content of CCES outperform conventional estimates based on RDD phone surveys. We also argue that opt-in panels, internet surveys, and cooperative ventures like CCES provide cost-effective alternatives for social scientists under certain conditions. These types of surveys can provide reductions in RMSE over conventional methods when sample matching is used to ameliorate the biases that come with sampling from an opt-in panel. The purpose of this paper is to: briefly describe the system performance of the "Grow Biointensive" method of agriculture in the initial trials at Palo Alto, California in a C-horizon molisol material including water use; first year yields' and a second year comparative experiment with broccoli. The data collected at this site, Ecology Action's newer site in northern California near Willits and at the related projects in India and Russia described in this series of articles have not been developed and analyzed on a statistical basis. The results in the different soils, climates and geographic regions involved appear to be significant enough over an almost three decade period to merit statistical evaluation by academic institutions. This article surveys the holdings gathered on social and cultural movements at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace in the U.S. The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace was founded at Stanford University by Herbert Hoover in 1919 to collect materials documenting the causes and consequences of World War I. The Hoover Institution is available without charge to all individuals regardless of citizenship, residence, academic affiliation, or lack thereof. Socialist activities during World War I are illuminated by the microfilm collection (10 reels) assembled by Frank L. Grubbs, Jr., as research material for his book "The Struggle for Labor Loyalty." Grubbs' topic was the competition between the pro-war American Alliance for Labor and Democracy and the anti-war People's Council of America, both founded in 1917. The Archives' holdings on the Communist Party, U.S., are far more extensive, and, without question, the single richest source is the Jay Lovestone Papers (330 linear feet). Lovestone a founding member of the party in 1919, played a central role in its internal factional wars of the 1920s, became its general secretary in 1927, and was expelled together with a core of followers in 1929 at the insistence of Communist International headquarters in Moscow.

The article offers the author's insights on the role of news literacy in journalism. The author features investigative story written by Ben Hewlett of Palo Alto High School in California in their student paper "The Campanile" on the anomaly during school board meeting, and the philosophy regarding the journalism program of the school. It mentions the "21st Century Literacy" proposed outcomes which include using social networking tools, searching intelligently, and gaining access to open education resource (OER). The author also suggests requiring news literacy as a course for all students, for them to learn how to be critical readers and not just write web-based publications.
