In this era, research and development are becoming a continuous and accelerating process because technology changes rapidly with a short lifecycle. As a result, various methodologies are being developed to monitor these rapidly changing research trends; In particular, clustering method-related studies in science and technology documents are being developed with a variety of approaches. However, previous studies on document clustering methods focus on a specific field or language but do not take into consideration certain important pieces of information in science and technology documents. Therefore, this study proposes an embedding methodology that uses important content from scientific and technical documents. We took into consideration the importance of information containing core structures in science and technology documents and proposed a clustering methodology that analyzes structured and unstructured data, such as textual information, author information, and citation information. The proposed method combines both textual and structural data from the paper, using a method that focuses on screening important information by sections in science and technology documents. Then, Girvan-Newman clustering and Louvain clustering models are applied to generate embedding vectors and show evaluation results through the clustering indices. As a practical example, we applied the proposed methodology using paper data from the field of hydrogen cell vehicles. The results of this study will be effective in identifying gaps in technology for new technological development, identifying technology trends, and presenting directional information for future technology development.

This paper offers a comprehensive overview of the IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management (IEEE TEM) from 1985 to 2017. This paper employs a mixed-method examination based on an in-depth interview with the new editor-in-chief regarding the challenges for the future of IEEE TEM, along with a bibliometric analysis of the journal. By using Web of Science Core Collection data, the analysis maps the knowledge produced and disseminated by IEEE TEM, revealing the most cited papers, the most frequently occurring keywords and the interconnection between them, the most prolific authors and their coauthorship network, and the most prolific countries for published articles. This paper also shows the main avenues of research covered by IEEE TEM and their evolution through the analysis of the correlation of keywords. Heterogeneous graph embedding aims at learning low-dimensional representations from a graph featuring nodes and edges of diverse natures, and meanwhile preserving the underlying topology. Existing approaches along this line have largely relied on meta-paths, which are by nature hand-crafted and pre-defined transition rules, so as to explore the semantics of a graph. Despite the promising results, defining meta-paths requires domain knowledge, and thus when the test distribution deviates from the priors, such methods are prone to errors. In this paper, we propose a self-learning scheme for heterogeneous graph embedding, termed as self-guided walk (SILK), that bypasses meta-paths and learns adaptive attentions for node walking. SILK assumes no prior knowledge or annotation is provided, and conducts a customized random walk to encode the contexts of the heterogeneous graph of interest. Specifically, this is achieved via maintaining a dynamically-updated guidance matrix that records the node-conditioned transition potentials. Network embedding has been widely employed in networked data mining applications as it can learn low-dimensional and dense node representations from the high-dimensional and sparse network structure. While most existing network embedding methods only model the proximity between two nodes regardless of the order of the proximity, this paper proposes to explicitly model multi-node proximities which can be widely observed in practice, e.g., multiple researchers coauthor a paper, and multiple genes co-express a protein. Explicitly modeling multi-node proximities is important because some two-node interactions may not come into existence without a third node. By proving that LINE(1st), a recent network embedding method, is equivalent to kernelized matrix factorization, this paper proposes coupled kernelized multi-dimensional array factorization (Cetera) which jointly factorizes multiple multi-dimensional arrays by enforcing a consensus representation for each node. In this way, node representations can be more comprehensive and effective, which is demonstrated on three real-world networks through link prediction and multi-label classification. Digital watermarking technology and watermark attack methods are mutually reinforcing and complementary. Currently, traditional watermark attack methods are relatively mature, but these traditional attack methods will inevitably damage the visual quality of original images (OIs). Therefore, this paper proposes a covert attack method called residual dense based imperceptible watermark attack network (RD-IWAN). First, this paper designs a watermark attack residual dense network (WARDN) based on the residual dense network (RDN), which can effectively remove the watermark information in the middle and low frequency features of the watermarked image (WMI). Second, to improve the attack ability of the network, this paper innovatively proposes a progressive preprocessing method based on the information enhancement preprocessing method. Concurrently, to ensure the imperceptibility of this watermark attack method, a comprehensive loss function that combines the perceptual loss and mean square error loss (MSE) of OI and attacked watermarked image (AWMI) is designed in this study. Finally, attack experiments are designed and performed on watermarks with different embedding strengths and sizes. Experimental results show that, compared to traditional attack methods, the watermark attack method proposed in this paper exhibits stronger attack ability and higher imperceptibility. Periodicity is a frequently happening phenomenon for social interactions in temporal networks. Mining periodic communities are essential to understanding periodic group behaviors in temporal networks. Unfortunately, most previous studies for community mining in temporal networks ignore the periodic patterns of communities. In this paper, we study the problem of seeking periodic communities in a temporal network, where each edge is associated with a set of timestamps. We propose novel models, including $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -core and $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -clique, that represent periodic communities in temporal networks. Specifically, a $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -core (or $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -clique) is a $k$ k -core (or clique with size larger than $k$ k ) that appears at least $\sigma$ σ times periodically in the temporal graph. The problem of searching periodic core is efficient but the resulting communities may be not enough cohesive; the problem of enumerating all periodic cliques is not efficient (NP-hard) but the resulting communities are very cohesive. To compute all of them efficiently, we first develop two effective graph reduction techniques to significantly prune the temporal graph. Then, we transform the temporal graph into a static graph and prove that mining the periodic communities in the temporal graph equals mining communities in the transformed graph. Subsequently, we propose a decomposition algorithm to search maximal $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -core, a Bron-Kerbosch style algorithm to enumerate all maximal $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -cliques, and a branch-and-bound style algorithm to find the maximum $\sigma$ σ -periodic clique. Network alignment aims at inferring a set of anchor links matching the shared entities between different information networks, which has become a prerequisite step for effective fusion of multiple information networks. In this paper, we will study the network alignment problem to fuse online social networks specifically. Social network alignment is extremely challenging to address due to several reasons, i.e., lack of training data, network heterogeneity and one-to-one constraint. Existing network alignment works usually require a large number of training instances, but such a demand can hardly be met in applications, as manual anchor link labeling is extremely expensive. Significantly different from other homogeneous network alignment works, information in online social networks is usually of heterogeneous categories, the incorporation of which in model building is not an easy task. Furthermore, the one-to-one cardinality constraint on anchor links renders their inference process intertwistingly correlated. To resolve these three challenges, a novel network alignment model, namely ActiveIter (Active Iterative Alignment), is introduced in this paper. The model ActiveIter defines a set of inter-network meta diagrams for anchor link feature extraction, adopts active learning for effective label query and uses greedy link selection for anchor link cardinality filtering. Extensive experiments were performed on a real-world aligned networks dataset, and the experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of ActiveIter compared with other state-of-the-art baseline methods. The vanilla Few-shot Learning (FSL) learns to build a classifier for a new concept from one or very few target examples, with the general assumption that source and target classes are sampled from the same domain. Recently, the task of Cross-Domain Few-Shot Learning (CD-FSL) aims at tackling the FSL where there is a huge domain shift between the source and target datasets. Extensive efforts on CD-FSL have been made via either directly extending the meta-learning paradigm of vanilla FSL methods, or employing massive unlabeled target data to help learn models. In this paper, we notice that in the CD-FSL task, the few labeled target images have never been explicitly leveraged to inform the model in the training stage. However, such a labeled target example set is very important to bridge the huge domain gap. Critically, this paper advocates a more practical training scenario for CD-FSL. And our key insight is to utilize a few labeled target data to guide the learning of the CD-FSL model. Technically, we propose a novel Generalized Meta-learning based Feature-Disentangled Mixup network, namely GMeta-FDMixup. We make three key contributions of utilizing GMeta-FDMixup to address CD-FSL. Firstly, we present two mixup modules – mixup-P and mixup-M that help facilitate utilizing the unbalanced and disjoint source and target datasets. These two novel modules enable diverse image generation for training the model on the source domain. Secondly, to narrow the domain gap explicitly, we contribute a novel feature disentanglement module that learns to decouple the domain-irrelevant and domain-specific features. By stripping the domain-specific features, we alleviate the negative effects caused by the domain inductive bias. Finally, we repurpose a new contrastive learning module, dubbed ConL. ConL prevents the model from only capturing category-related features via introducing contrastive loss. Thus, the generalization ability on novel categories is improved. Previous 2D saliency detection methods extract salient cues from a single view and directly predict the expected results. Both traditional and deep-learning-based 2D methods do not consider geometric information of 3D scenes. Therefore the relationship between scene understanding and salient objects cannot be effectively established. This limits the performance of 2D saliency detection in challenging scenes. In this paper, we show for the first time that saliency detection problem can be reformulated as two sub-problems: light field synthesis from a single view and light-field-driven saliency detection. This paper first introduces a high-quality light field synthesis network to produce reliable 4D light field information. Then a novel light-field-driven saliency detection network is proposed, in which a Direction-specific Screening Unit (DSU) is tailored to exploit the spatial correlation among multiple viewpoints. The whole pipeline can be trained in an end-to-end fashion. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art 2D, 3D and 4D saliency detection methods. As the rate at which scientific work is published continues to increase, so does the need to discern high-impact publications. In recent years, there have been several approaches that seek to rank publications based on their expected citation-based impact. Despite this level of attention, this research area has not been systematically studied. Past literature often fails to distinguish between short-term impact, the current popularity of an article, and long-term impact, the overall influence of an article. Moreover, the evaluation methodologies applied vary widely and are inconsistent. In this work, we aim to fill these gaps, studying impact-based ranking theoretically and experimentally. First, we provide explicit definitions for short-term and long-term impact, and introduce the associated ranking problems. Then, we identify and classify the most important ideas employed by state-of-the-art methods. After studying various evaluation methodologies of the literature, we propose a specific benchmark framework that can help us better differentiate effectiveness across impact aspects. Using this framework we investigate: (1) the practical difference between ranking by short- and long-term impact, and (2) the effectiveness and efficiency of ranking methods in different settings. Uncertain data objects are objects that can be characterized by either a probability density function (PDF) or with multiple points. Because of existing levels of uncertainty for uncertain data objects, the scatter of this type of objects might be very different than the scatter of certain data objects. Measures of scatter for uncertain objects have not been defined before. In this paper, we define covariance matrix, within scatter matrix, and between scatter matrix as the measures of scatter for uncertain data objects. Also, in this paper, we extend the idea of Fisher linear discriminant analysis for uncertain objects (UFLDA). We also develop kernel Fisher discriminant analysis for uncertain objects (UKFDA). The developed uncertain kernel Fisher discriminants are for two cases: 1) when the uncertain objects are given with PDF and 2) when the uncertain objects are given with multiple points. We compare the performance of our developed uncertain Fisher discriminants (UFLDA and UKFDA) with a few other methods in classification of uncertain data objects through several examples on both simulated and real-world data. Deep neural networks (DNNs), including convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and residual networks (ResNets) models, are able to learn abstract representations from the input data by considering a deep hierarchy of layers that perform advanced feature extraction. The combination of these models with visual attention techniques can assist with the identification of the most representative parts of the data from a visual standpoint, obtained through more detailed filtering of the features extracted by the operational layers of the network. This is of significant interest for analyzing remotely sensed hyperspectral images (HSIs), characterized by their very high spectral dimensionality. However, few efforts have been conducted in the literature in order to adapt visual attention methods to remotely sensed HSI data analysis. In this paper, we introduce a new visual attention-driven technique for the HSI classification. Specifically, we incorporate attention mechanisms to a ResNet in order to better characterize the spectral–spatial information contained in the data. Our newly proposed method calculates a mask that is applied to the features obtained by the network in order to identify the most desirable ones for classification purposes. Our experiments, conducted using four widely used HSI data sets, reveal that the proposed deep attention model provides competitive advantages in terms of classification accuracy when compared to other state-of-the-art methods. The active contour model is a widely used technique for automatic object contour extraction. Existing methods based on this model can perform with high accuracy, even in the case of complex contours, but challenging issues remain, like the need for precise contour initialization for high curvature boundary segments or the handling of cluttered backgrounds. To deal with such issues, this paper presents a salient object extraction method, the first step of which is the introduction of an improved edge map that incorporates edge direction as a feature. The direction information in the small neighborhoods of image feature points is extracted, and the images’ prominent orientations are defined for direction-selective edge extraction. Using such improved edge information, we provide a highly accurate shape contour representation, which we also combine with texture features. The principle of the paper is to interpret an object as the fusion of its components: its extracted contour and its inner texture. Our goal in fusing textural and structural information is twofold: it is applied for automatic contour initialization, and it is also used to establish an improved external force field. This fusion then produces highly accurate salient object extractions. We performed extensive evaluations, which confirm that the presented object extraction method outperforms parametric active contour models and achieves higher efficiency than the majority of the evaluated automatic saliency methods. Given that heterogeneous information networks (HIN) encompass nodes and edges belonging to different semantic types, they can model complex data in real-world scenarios. Thus, HIN embedding has received increasing attention, which aims to learn node representations in a low-dimensional space, in order to preserve the structural and semantic information on the HIN. In this regard, metagraphs, which model common and recurring patterns on HINs, emerge as a powerful tool to capture semantic-rich and often latent relationships on HINs. Although metagraphs have been employed to address several specific data mining tasks, they have not been thoroughly explored for the more general HIN embedding. In this paper, we leverage metagraphs to learn relationship-preserving HIN embedding in a self-supervised setting, to support various relationship mining tasks. In particular, we observe that most of the current approaches often under-utilize metagraphs, which are only applied in a pre-processing step and do not actively guide representation learning afterwards. Thus, we propose the novel framework of mg2vec, which learns the embeddings for metagraphs and nodes jointly. That is, metagraphs actively participates in the learning process by mapping themselves to the same embedding space as the nodes do. Moreover, metagraphs guide the learning through both first- and second-order constraints on node embeddings, to model not only latent relationships between a pair of nodes, but also individual preferences of each node. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on three public datasets. Results show that mg2vec significantly outperforms a suite of state-of-the-art baselines in relationship mining tasks including relationship prediction, search and visualization. Detailed routing is one of the most challenging aspects of the physical design process. Many of the violations that occur during the detailed routing stage stem from the placement of the cells. In this paper, we propose a deep learning framework to identify short violations that can occur during detailed routing from a placed netlist. One of the advantages of our technique is that by using the proposed deep learning-based predictor, global routing is no longer required as frequently and hence the total runtime for place and route can be significantly reduced. In this paper, we discuss the proposed framework and the methodology for analyzing the extracted features. The experimental results show that the average sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of Eh?Predictor is above 90%. Randomness extraction against side information is the art of distilling from a given source a key which is almost uniform conditioned on the side information. This paper provides randomness extraction against quantum side information whose extractable key length is given by a quantum generalization of the collision entropy, which is smoothed and conditioned differently from how this is done in existing schemes. Based on the fact that the collision entropy is not subadditive, its optimization with respect to additional side information is introduced, and is shown to be asymptotically optimal. The lower bound derived there for general states is expressed as the difference between two unconditional entropies and its evaluation reduces to an eigenvalue problem of two states, which are the entire state and the marginal state of side information. Visualization charts are widely utilized for presenting structured data. Under many circumstances, people want to digitalize the data in the charts collected from various sources (e.g., papers and websites), in oder to further analyze the data or create new charts. However, existing automatic and semi-automatic approaches are not always effective due to the variety of charts. In this paper, we introduce a crowdsourcing approach that leverages human ability to extract data from visualization charts. There are several challenges. The first is how to avoid tedious human interaction with charts and design effective crowdsourcing tasks. Second, it is challenging to evaluate worker’s quality for truth inference, because workers may not only provide inaccurate values but also misalign values to wrong data series. Third, to guarantee quality, one may assign a task to many workers, leading to a high crowdsourcing cost. To address these challenges, we design an effective crowdsourcing task scheme that splits a chart into simple micro-tasks. We introduce a novel worker quality model by considering worker’s accuracy and task difficulty. We also devise effective task assignment and early-termination mechanisms to save the cost. We evaluate our approach on real-world datasets on real crowdsourced platforms, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Link similarity is widely applied in measuring the similarity between such objects as Web pages, scientific papers, and social networks. However, there are some deficiencies in the existing methods to measure it. For example, they cannot handle some semantic-similar contents. Their computation may not lead to accurate results in some cases. This paper presents a novel method to do so. It introduces the semantic similarity to calculate the similarity between two given objects, and overcomes the drawback caused by the fact that the existing methods ignore the semantic information of objects. It is a significant problem to efficiently identify the frequently occurring patterns in a given dataset, so as to unveil the trends hidden behind the dataset. This paper is motivated by the serious demands of a high-performance in-memory frequent-pattern mining strategy, with joint optimization over the mining performance and system durability. While the widely used frequent-pattern tree (FP-tree) serves as an efficient approach for frequent-pattern mining, its construction procedure often makes it unfriendly for nonvolatile memories (NVMs). In particular, the incremental construction of FP-tree could generate many unnecessary writes to the NVM and greatly degrade the energy efficiency, because NVM writes typically take more time and energy than reads. To overcome the drawbacks of FP-tree on NVMs, this paper proposes evergreen FP-tree (EvFP-tree), which includes a lazy counter and a minimum-bit-altered (MBA) encoding scheme to make FP-tree friendly for NVMs. The basic idea of the lazy counter is to greatly eliminate the redundant writes generated in FP-tree construction. On the other hand, the MBA encoding scheme is to complement existing wear-leveling techniques to evenly write each memory cell to extend the NVM lifetime. As verified by experiments, EvFP-tree greatly enhances the mining performance and system lifetime by 40.28% and 87.20% on average, respectively. This paper proposes a novel semiautomatic system domain data analysis method. The method is based on the iterative acquisition and analysis of a large body of bibliometric data, generation of domain taxonomies, and creation of domain models. The method was applied on a smart grid case study through collection and analysis of more than 6000 documents. A schedule-based system is a system that operates on or contains within a schedule of events and breaks at particular time intervals. Entities within the system show presence or absence in these events by entering or exiting the locations of the events. Given radio frequency identification (RFID) data from a schedule-based system, what can we learn about the system (the events and entities) through data mining? Which data mining methods can be applied so that one can obtain rich actionable insights regarding the system and the domain? The research goal of this paper is to answer these posed research questions, through the development of a framework that systematically produces actionable insights for a given schedule-based system. We show that through integrating appropriate data mining methodologies as a unified framework, one can obtain many insights from even a very simple RFID dataset, which contains only very few fields. The developed framework is general, and is applicable to any schedule-based system, as long as it operates under certain basic assumptions. The types of insights are also general, and are formulated in this paper in the most abstract way. The applicability of the developed framework is illustrated through a case study, where real world data from a schedule-based system is analyzed using the introduced framework. Multi-modal imaging data fusion has attracted much attention in medical data analysis because it can provide complementary information for more accurate analysis. Integrating functional and structural multi-modal imaging data has been increasingly used in the diagnosis of brain diseases, such as epilepsy. Most of the existing methods focus on the feature space fusion of different modalities but ignore the valuable high-order relationships among samples and the discriminative fused features for classification. In this paper, we propose a novel framework by fusing data from two modalities of functional MRI (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) for epilepsy diagnosis, which effectively captures the complementary information and discriminative features from different modalities by high-order feature extraction with the attention mechanism. Specifically, we propose a triple network to explore the discriminative information from the high-order representation feature space learned from multi-modal data. Meanwhile, self-attention is introduced to adaptively estimate the degree of importance between brain regions, and the cross-attention mechanism is utilized to extract complementary information from fMRI and DTI. Finally, we use the triple loss function to adjust the distance between samples in the common representation space. We evaluate the proposed method on the epilepsy dataset collected from Jinling Hospital, and the experiment results demonstrate that our method is significantly superior to several state-of-the-art diagnosis approaches. Event logs that are recorded by information systems provide a valuable starting point for the analysis of processes in various domains, reaching from healthcare, through logistics, to e-commerce. Specifically, behavioral patterns discovered from an event log enable operational insights, even in scenarios where process execution is rather unstructured and shows a large degree of variability. While such behavioral patterns capture frequently recurring episodes of a process’ behavior, they are not limited to sequential behavior but include notions of concurrency and exclusive choices. Existing algorithms to discover behavioral patterns are context-agnostic, though. They neglect the context in which patterns are observed, which severely limits the granularity at which behavioral regularities are identified. In this paper, we therefore present an approach to discover contextual behavioral patterns. Contextual patterns may be frequent solely in a certain partition of the event log, which enables fine-granular insights into the aspects that influence the conduct of a process. Moreover, we show how to analyze the discovered contextual behavioral patterns in terms of causal relations between context information and the patterns, as well as correlations between the patterns themselves. A complete analysis methodology leveraging all the tools presented in the paper and supplemented by interpretations guidelines is also provided. While recent developments of neural network (NN) models have led to a series of record-breaking achievements in many applications, the lack of sufficiently good datasets remains a problem for some applications. For such a problem, we can however exploit a large number of unstructured text corpora as an external knowledge to complement the training data, and most prevailing neural network solutions employ word embedding methods for such purposes. In this paper, we propose LDA-Reg, a novel knowledge driven regularization framework based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) as an alternative to the word embedding methods to adaptively utilize abundant external knowledge and to interpret the NN model. For the joint learning of the parameters, we propose EM-SGD, an effective update method which incorporates Expectation Maximization (EM) and Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) to update parameters iteratively. Moreover, we also devise a lazy update and sparse update method for the high-dimensional inputs and sparse inputs respectively. We validate the effectiveness of our regularization framework through an extensive experimental study over real world and standard benchmark datasets. The results show that our proposed framework not only achieves significant improvement over state-of-the-art word embedding methods but also learns interpretable and significant topics for various tasks. Competition between Points of Interest (POIs) refers to the situation in which two POIs directly or indirectly provide similar services to secure businesses. A large portion of prior studies on competition analysis focuses on mining textual data, e.g., news articles and social comments. However, the increasing availability of human mobility and mobile query data enables a new paradigm for analyzing the competitive relationships among POIs, which remains largely unexplored. To this end, in this paper, we attempt to mine large-scale online map search query data for better understanding POI competitive relationships. Based on a co-query POI graph built from the map search query data, we develop a novel neural graphlet-based prediction framework to predict the competitive relationships among POIs. A unique perspective of our model is to infer latent POI competitive relationships by integrating multiple distinct factors, e.g., graphlet structure, geographical distance, and regional features, reflected in map search query data and POI data. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on real-world datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, and show that our framework outperforms all baselines with a significant margin in all evaluation metrics. Pretrained deep models hold their learnt knowledge in the form of model parameters. These parameters act as “memory” for the trained models and help them generalize well on unseen data. However, in absence of training data, the utility of a trained model is merely limited to either inference or better initialization towards a target task. In this paper, we go further and extract synthetic data by leveraging the learnt model parameters. We dub them Data Impressions, which act as proxy to the training data and can be used to realize a variety of tasks. These are useful in scenarios where only the pretrained models are available and the training data is not shared (e.g., due to privacy or sensitivity concerns). We show the applicability of data impressions in solving several computer vision tasks such as unsupervised domain adaptation, continual learning as well as knowledge distillation. We also study the adversarial robustness of lightweight models trained via knowledge distillation using these data impressions. Further, we demonstrate the efficacy of data impressions in generating data-free Universal Adversarial Perturbations (UAPs) with better fooling rates. This paper proposes a novel contribution factor (CF) approach to predict diversified daily peak load of low voltage (LV) substations. The CF for each LV template developed in part I of the paper is determined by a novel method—clusterwise weighted constrained regression (CWCR). It takes into account the contribution from different customer classes to substation peaks, respecting the natural difference in time and magnitude between LV substation peaks and the variance within the templates. In CWCR, intercept and coefficients are constrained to ensure that the resultant coefficients do not lead to reverse load flow and can respect zero-load substations. Cross validation is developed to validate the stability of the proposed method and prevent over fitting. The proposed method shows significant improvement in the accuracy of peak estimation over the current status quo across 800 substations of different mixes of domestic, industrial and commercial (I&C) customers. The automatic detection and identification of fish from underwater videos is of great significance for fishery resource assessment and ecological environment monitoring. However, due to the poor quality of underwater images and unconstrained fish movement, traditional hand-designed feature extraction methods or convolutional neural network (CNN)-based object detection algorithms cannot meet the detection requirements in real underwater scenes. Therefore, to realize fish recognition and localization in a complex underwater environment, this paper proposes a novel composite fish detection framework based on a composite backbone and an enhanced path aggregation network called Composited FishNet. By improving the residual network (ResNet), a new composite backbone network (CBresnet) is designed to learn the scene change information (source domain style), which is caused by the differences in the image brightness, fish orientation, seabed structure, aquatic plant movement, fish species shape and texture differences. Thus, the interference of underwater environmental information on the object characteristics is reduced, and the output of the main network to the object information is strengthened. In addition, to better integrate the high and low feature information output from CBresnet, the enhanced path aggregation network (EPANet) is also designed to solve the insufficient utilization of semantic information caused by linear upsampling. The experimental results show that the average precision (AP)0.5:0.95, AP50 and average recall (AR)max=10 of the proposed Composited FishNet are 75.2%, 92.8% and 81.1%, respectively. The composite backbone network enhances the characteristic information output of the detected object and improves the utilization of characteristic information. Macrovascular invasion (MaVI) is a major threat to survival in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which should be treated as early as possible to ensure safety and efficacy. In this aspect, MaVI prediction can be helpful. However, MaVI prediction is difficult because of the inter-class similarity and intra-class variation of HCC in computed tomography (CT) images. Moreover, existing methods fail to include clinical priori knowledge associated with HCC, leading to incomprehensive information extraction. In this paper, we proposed a prior knowledge-aware fusion network (PKAFnet) to accurately achieve MaVI prediction in CT images. First, a perception module was presented to extract features related to tumor marginal heterogeneity in the graph domain, which contributed to rotation invariance and captured intensity variations of tumor margin. Second, a tumor segmentation network was built to obtain global information of a 3D tumor image and information associated with tumor internal heterogeneity in the image domain. Finally, multi-domain features associated with the tumor margin and tumor region were combined by using a multi-domain attentional feature fusion module. Thus, by incorporating MaVI-related prior knowledge, our PKAFnet can alleviate overfitting, which can improve the discriminative ability. The proposed PKAFnet was validated on a multi-center dataset, and remarkable performance was achieved in an independent testing set. Moreover, the interpretability of perception module and segmentation network were presented in our paper, which illustrated the effectiveness and credibility of PKAFnet. Given a dataset $\mathcal S$ S composed of $g$ g subsets with each data item belonging to one of them, multiset membership lookup takes an item $e$ e as input and outputs a binary answer whether $e\in {\mathcal S}$ e ∈ S and, in case of yes, the ID of the subset to which $e$ e belongs. Overlaid upon while more sophisticated than the canonical membership lookup, multiset membership lookup emerges as a pivotal functionality in many computing and networking paradigms. The quest to achieve high-speed, high-accuracy lookup with limited memory cost makes lookup algorithm design a challenging task, particularly when the data items arrive as a stream. In this paper, we devise compact data structures and lookup algorithms that are amendable for hardware implementation, while guaranteeing high lookup accuracy and supporting interactive query processing. We first propose multi-hash color table, a variant of Bloom filter, to encode subset IDs compactly and map the ID of an item to its subset ID. We further construct a more balanced data structure called balanced multi-hash color table to improve the compactness by integrating the state-of-the-art load balancing technique. We complete our work by addressing the case of batch arrivals and design a batched recording algorithm optimizing the memory efficiency. We give both theoretical and empirical analysis to characterize and evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms in terms of lookup accuracy, memory and access efficiency. Crowd counting is a task of intelligent applications, and its operation efficiency is very important. However, in order to obtain a better counting performance, most of the existing works often design larger and more complex network structures, which will result in them occupying considerable memory, time and other resources at runtime, seriously limiting their deployment scope and making it difficult to be widely used in practical scenarios. In this paper, in order to overcome the above problems, we propose an effective lightweight encoding-decoding crowd counting network, named Lw-Count. Specifically, in the encoding process, we design an efficient and lightweight convolution module (ELCM), which extracts the crowd features in the network through a refined ghost block to reduce the network parameters and computing cost, and solves the problem of inaccurate counting caused by uneven crowd distribution through spatial group normalization (SGN). In the decoding process, we design a scale regression module (SRM) to reduce the error details and chessboard effect caused by linear interpolation and deconvolution. In addition, we design a new loss function, which enhances the spatial correlation of the density map and the sensitivity of the crowd through a regional normalized cross-correlation loss and counting loss, to ensure the counting accuracy. Extensive experiments on five mainstream datasets demonstrate that Lw-Count achieves an optimal trade-off between counting performance and running speed compared with other methods. Detecting anomalous objects from given data has a broad range of real-world applications. Although there is a rich number of outlier detection algorithms, most of them involve hidden assumptions and restrictions. This paper proposes a novel, yet effective outlier learning algorithm that is based on decomposing the full attributes space into different combinations of subspaces, in which the 3D-vectors, representing the data points per 3D-subspace, are rotated about the geometric median, using Rodrigues rotation formula, to construct the overall outlying score. The proposed approach is parameter-free, requires no distribution assumptions and easy to implement. Extensive experimental study and comparison are conducted on both synthetic and real-world datasets with six popular outlier detection algorithms, each from different category. The comparison is evaluated based on the precision @s, average precision, rank power, AUC ROC and time complexity metrics. Contextual information plays an important role in solving various image and scene understanding tasks. Prior works have focused on the extraction of contextual information from an image and use it to infer the properties of some object(s) in the image or understand the scene behind the image, e.g., context-based object detection, recognition and semantic segmentation. In this paper, we consider an inverse problem, i.e., how to hallucinate the missing contextual information from the properties of standalone objects. We refer to it as object-level scene context prediction. This problem is difficult, as it requires extensive knowledge of the complex and diverse relationships among objects in the scene. We propose a deep neural network, which takes as input the properties (i.e., category, shape, and position) of a few standalone objects to predict an object-level scene layout that compactly encodes the semantics and structure of the scene context where the given objects are. Quantitative experiments and user studies demonstrate that our model can generate more plausible scene contexts than the baselines. Our model also enables the synthesis of realistic scene images from partial scene layouts. In this paper, we reveal that metric learning would suffer from serious inseparable problem if without informative sample mining. Since the inseparable samples are often mixed with hard samples, current informative sample mining strategies used to deal with inseparable problem may bring up some side-effects, such as instability of objective function, etc. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel distance metric learning algorithm, named adaptive neighborhood metric learning (ANML). In ANML, we design two thresholds to adaptively identify the inseparable similar and dissimilar samples in the training procedure, thus inseparable sample removing and metric parameter learning are implemented in the same procedure. Due to the non-continuity of the proposed ANML, we develop an ingenious function, named log-exp mean function to construct a continuous formulation to surrogate it, which can be efficiently solved by the gradient descent method. Similar to Triplet loss, ANML can be used to learn both the linear and deep embeddings. By analyzing the proposed method, we find it has some interesting properties. For example, when ANML is used to learn the linear embedding, current famous metric learning algorithms such as the large margin nearest neighbor (LMNN) and neighbourhood components analysis (NCA) are the special cases of the proposed ANML by setting the parameters different values. When it is used to learn deep features, the state-of-the-art deep metric learning algorithms such as Triplet loss, Lifted structure loss, and Multi-similarity loss become the special cases of ANML. Furthermore, the log-exp mean function proposed in our method gives a new perspective to review the deep metric learning methods such as Prox-NCA and N-pairs loss. In this paper, we report the characterization and modeling of multi-finger gate all around (GAA) nanowire (NW) FETs (NWFETs) from dc to 14 GHz. The self-heating effect (SHE) in NWFETs is investigated experimentally using the small-signal output conductance (${g}_{{\text {ds}}}$) technique. The frequency-dependent complex thermal impedance, ${Z}_{{\text {th}}}({f})$ , is extracted by fitting an ${n}$ th-order thermal network with the experimental data. We show that the temperature rise $\Delta {T}$ (=85 °C) due to SHE is significant in short-channel silicon on insulator (SOI) NWFETs. Finally, we have evaluated the RF figure of merit (FOM) for these NWFETs as ${f}_{T}$ (=70 GHz) and ${f}_{\text {max}}$ (=80 GHz). We also report the RF performance metric sensitivity on temperature, $\partial {f}_{\text {max}}/\partial {T}_{{\text {amb}}}$ ($\approx -0.104$ GHz/K). As a newly emerging network model, heterogeneous information networks (HINs) have received growing attention. Many data mining tasks have been explored in HINs, including clustering, classification, and similarity search. Similarity join is a fundamental operation required for many problems. It is attracting attention from various applications on network data, such as friend recommendation, link prediction, and online advertising. Although similarity join has been well studied in homogeneous networks, it has not yet been studied in heterogeneous networks. Especially, none of the existing research on similarity join takes different semantic meanings behind paths into consideration and almost all completely ignore the heterogeneity and diversity of the HINs. In this paper, we propose a path-based similarity join (PS-join) method to return the top $k$ similar pairs of objects based on any user specified join path in a heterogeneous information network. We study how to prune expensive similarity computation by introducing bucket pruning based locality sensitive hashing (BPLSH) indexing. Compared with existing Link-based Similarity join (LS-join) method, PS-join can derive various similarity semantics. In this paper, we present a new framework for the fusion, representation, and analysis of multitemporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. It leads to the definition of a new class of products representing an intermediate level between the classic Level-1 and Level-2 products. The proposed Level-1 $\beta$ products are particularly oriented toward nonexpert users. In fact, their principal characteristics are the interpretability and the suitability to be processed with standard algorithms. The main innovation of this paper is the design of a suitable RGB representation of data aiming to enhance the information content of the time-series. The physical rationale of the products is presented through examples, in which we show their robustness with respect to sensor, acquisition mode, and geographic area. A discussion about the suitability of the proposed products with Sentinel-1 imagery is also provided, showing the full compatibility with data acquired by the new European Space Agency sensor. Feature selection is an optional preprocessing procedure and is frequently used to improve the classification accuracy of a machine learning algorithm by removing irrelevant and/or redundant features. However, in many real-world applications, the test cost is also required for making optimal decisions, in addition to the classification accuracy. To the best of our knowledge, thus far, few studies have been conducted on test-cost-sensitive feature selection (TCSFS). In TCSFS, the objectives are twofold: 1) to improve the classification accuracy and 2) to decrease the test cost. Therefore, in fact, it constitutes a multiobjective optimization problem. In this paper, we transformed this multiobjective optimization problem into a single-objective optimization problem by utilizing a new evaluation function and in this paper, we propose a new general wrapper framework for TCSFS. Specifically, in our proposed framework, we add a new term to the evaluation function of a wrapper feature selection method so that the test cost of measuring features is taken into account. We experimentally tested our proposed framework, using 36 classification problems from the University of California at Irvine (UCI) repository, and compared it to some other state-of-the-art feature selection frameworks. The experimental results showed that our framework allows users to select an optimal feature subset with the minimal test cost, while simultaneously maintaining a high classification accuracy. Forward modeling of wave scattering and radar imaging mechanisms is the key to information extraction from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Like inverse graphics in the optical domain, an inherently-integrated forward-inverse approach would be promising for SAR advanced information retrieval and target reconstruction. This paper presents such an attempt at inverse graphics for SAR imagery. A differentiable SAR renderer (DSR) is developed, which reformulates the mapping and projection algorithm of the SAR imaging mechanism in the differentiable form of probability maps. First-order gradients of the proposed DSR are then analytically derived, which can be back-propagated from rendered image/silhouette to the target geometry and scattering attributes. A 3D inverse target reconstruction algorithm from SAR images is devised. Several simulation and reconstruction experiments are conducted, including targets with and without background, using synthesized data or real measured inverse SAR (ISAR) data by ground radar. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Graph Neural Networks (GNN), such as Graph Attention Networks (GAT), are two classic neural network models, which are applied to the processing of grid data and graph data respectively. They have achieved outstanding performance in hyperspectral images (HSIs) classification field, which have attracted great interest. However, CNN has been facing the problem of small samples and GNN has to pay a huge computational cost, which restrict the performance of the two models. In this paper, we propose Weighted Feature Fusion of Convolutional Neural Network and Graph Attention Network (WFCG) for HSI classification, by using the characteristics of superpixel-based GAT and pixel-based CNN, which proved to be complementary. We first establish GAT with the help of superpixel-based encoder and decoder modules. Then we combined the attention mechanism to construct CNN. Finally, the features are weighted fusion with the characteristics of two neural network models. Rigorous experiments on three real-world HSI data sets show WFCG can fully explore the high-dimensional feature of HSI, and obtain competitive results compared to other state-of-the art methods. In this paper, we focus on co-selection of instances and features in the semi-supervised learning scenario. In this context, co-selection becomes a more challenging problem as data contain labeled and unlabeled examples sampled from the same population. To carry out such semi-supervised co-selection, we propose a unified framework, called sCOs, which efficiently integrates labeled and unlabeled parts into the co-selection process. The framework is based on introducing both a sparse regularization term and a similarity preserving approach. It evaluates the usefulness of features and instances in order to select the most relevant ones, simultaneously. We propose two efficient algorithms that work for both convex and nonconvex functions. To the best of our knowledge, this paper offers, for the first time ever, a study utilizing nonconvex penalties for the co-selection of semi-supervised learning tasks. As more and more applications produce streaming data, clustering data streams has become an important technique for data and knowledge engineering. A typical approach is to summarize the data stream in real-time with an online process into a large number of so called micro-clusters. Micro-clusters represent local density estimates by aggregating the information of many data points in a defined area. On demand, a (modified) conventional clustering algorithm is used in a second offline step to recluster the micro-clusters into larger final clusters. For reclustering, the centers of the micro-clusters are used as pseudo points with the density estimates used as their weights. However, information about density in the area between micro-clusters is not preserved in the online process and reclustering is based on possibly inaccurate assumptions about the distribution of data within and between micro-clusters (e.g., uniform or Gaussian). This paper describes DBSTREAM, the first micro-cluster-based online clustering component that explicitly captures the density between micro-clusters via a shared density graph. The density information in this graph is then exploited for reclustering based on actual density between adjacent micro-clusters. We discuss the space and time complexity of maintaining the shared density graph. Experiments on a wide range of synthetic and real data sets highlight that using shared density improves clustering quality over other popular data stream clustering methods which require the creation of a larger number of smaller micro-clusters to achieve comparable results. This paper proposes a two-stage methodology for online identification of power system dynamic signature using phasor measurement unit (PMU) measurements and data mining. Only transient stability status is usually predicted in the literature to assist with corrective control, without the dynamic behavior of generators in the event of instability. This paper uses traditional binary classification to identify transient stability in the first stage, and then develops a novel methodology to predict the nature of unstable dynamic behavior in the second stage. The method firstly applies hierarchical clustering to define patterns of unstable dynamic behavior of generators, and then applies different multiclass classification techniques, including decision tree, ensemble decision tree and multiclass support vector machine to identify characterized unstable responses. The concept of Big Data is often used to describe any extremely large set of data and the analytical methods used to derive meaning from it. In semiconductor manufacturing, more sensors are added to manufacturing equipment to capture deeper levels of equipment and process data which gives engineers the opportunity to achieve tighter control of their manufacturing processes. The amount of data is increasing at an exponential rate, but the time available to analyze the data is not. This means engineers must become more efficient in finding the most critical data and responding to out-of-control events. We present automated data filtering techniques and additional Data Visualization tools that effectively communicate results when data is presented in tables and graphs. This paper presents a real-time application of a data-mining method with the purpose of indirect contingency screening, by rapid recognition of hazardous, reoccurring power-system operating conditions. The method, suitable for real-time applications, is demonstrated using the Slovenian power-system model for first-swing stability issues. The presented demonstration is segmented into a few parts. First, a database containing a set of pre-fault operating conditions (represented by a measurement matrix) and critical clearing times corresponding to several contingencies is constructed. Measurements matrix from the database is decomposed using the principal component analysis method and represented in a coordinate system defined by the principal components as dense clusters of points. Consequentially, monitoring real-time steady-state conditions in terms of seeking similarity to existing database clusters is facilitated (global screening). This is established by identifying the shortest Euclidean distance metric in the mentioned coordinate system. Finally, a second-stage (local) screening is applied in order to adaptively account for the fluctuating sensitivity of contingencies to variations in pre-fault operating conditions. In this manner, an accurate indication of each contingency impact is provided rapidly as long as a similar operating state exists within the database. Otherwise, the case is thoroughly investigated and added to the database as a new entry. Visually analyzing citation networks poses challenges to many fields of the data mining research. How can we summarize a large citation graph according to the user’s interest? In particular, how can we illustrate the impact of a highly influential paper through the summarization? Can we maintain the sensory node-link graph structure while revealing the flow-based influence patterns and preserving a fine readability? The state-of-the-art influence maximization algorithms can detect the most influential node in a citation network, but fail to summarize a graph structure to account for its influence. On the other hand, existing graph summarization methods fold large graphs into clustered views, but can not reveal the hidden influence patterns underneath the citation network. In this paper, we first formally define the Influence Graph Summarization problem on citation networks. Second, we propose a matrix decomposition based algorithm pipeline to solve the IGS problem. Our method can not only highlight the flow-based influence patterns, but also easily extend to support the rich attribute information. A prototype system called VEGAS implementing this pipeline is also developed. Third, we present a theoretical analysis on our main algorithm, which is equivalent to the kernel k-mean clustering. It can be proved that the matrix decomposition based algorithm can approximate the objective of the proposed IGS problem. Last, we conduct comprehensive experiments with real-world citation networks to compare the proposed algorithm with classical graph summarization methods. Evaluation results demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms the previous ones in optimizing both the quantitative IGS objective and the quality of the visual summarizations. Text instance as one category of self-described objects provides valuable information for understanding and describing cluttered scenes. The rich and precise high-level semantics embodied in the text could drastically benefit the understanding of the world around us. While most recent visual phrase grounding approaches focus on general objects, this paper explores extracting designated texts and predicting unambiguous scene text information, i.e., to accurately localize and recognize a specific targeted text instance in a cluttered image from natural language descriptions (referring expressions). To address this issue, first a novel recurrent dense text localization network (DTLN) is proposed to sequentially decode the intermediate convolutional representations of a cluttered scene image into a set of distinct text instance detections. Our approach avoids repeated text detections at multiple scales by recurrently memorizing previous detections, and effectively tackles crowded text instances in close proximity. Second, we propose a context reasoning text retrieval (CRTR) model, which jointly encodes text instances and their context information through a recurrent network, and ranks localized text bounding boxes by a scoring function of context compatibility. Third, a recurrent text recognition module is introduced to extend the applicability of aforementioned DTLN and CRTR models, via text verification or transcription. Quantitative evaluations on standard scene text extraction benchmarks and a newly collected scene text retrieval dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of our models for the joint scene text localization, retrieval, and recognition task. Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) has been successfully applied in several data mining tasks. Recently, there is an increasing interest in the acceleration of NMF, due to its high cost on large matrices. On the other hand, the privacy issue of NMF over federated data is worthy of attention, since NMF is prevalently applied in image and text analysis which may involve leveraging privacy data (e.g, medical image and record) across several parties (e.g., hospitals). In this paper, we study the acceleration and security problems of distributed NMF. First, we propose a distributed sketched alternating nonnegative least squares(DSANLS) framework for NMF, which utilizes a matrix sketching technique to reduce the size of nonnegative least squares subproblems with a convergence guarantee. For the second problem, we show that DSANLS with modification can be adapted to the security setting, but only for one or limited iterations. Consequently, we propose four efficient distributed NMF methods in both synchronous and asynchronous settings with a security guarantee.
