A voltage-controlled hydraulic actuator is presented that employs electroosmotic fluid flow (EOF) in paper microchannels within an elastomeric structure. The microfluidic device was fabricated using a new benchtop lamination process. Flexible embedded electrodes were formed from a conductive carbon-silicone composite. The pores in the layer of paper placed between the electrodes served as the microchannels for EOF, and the pumping fluid was propylene carbonate. A sealed fluid-filled chamber was formed by film-casting silicone to lay an actuating membrane over the pumping liquid. Hydraulic force generated by EOF caused the membrane to bulge by hundreds of micrometers within fractions of a second. Printed electronics are a set of additive manufacturing methods for creating future flexible electronics on thin polymeric sheets. We proposed the toner-type, dry, page-printing of Ag–Ni composite conductive particles on flexible plastic sheets without pre-treatment. No chemical solvents are necessary to compose the inks of the electronic materials used for the toner-type printing, and no chemical treatment is required for the plastic film substrate surface. In addition, multilayer printing is simple when using toner printing because previously printed materials do not need to be resolved; furthermore, composing the thick films of the electronic materials is relatively simple. In this study, we fabricated an Ag–Ni composite toner to improve the fluidity of the toner particles compared to bare Ag particles. We successfully printed IC peripheral circuits at a resolution of 0.20 mm and demonstrated that the actual electrical circuit pattern can be formed using our method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research on additive manufacturing (AM) path planning mainly focuses on the traditional three-axis AM path planning and five-degree-of-freedom (DOF) AM path planning, while there is less research on six-DOF AM path planning. In the traditional AM path planning algorithm, the filling path is discontinuous and there is long straight-line printing in a certain direction, which can easily lead to warpage deformation. Therefore, in this work, the six-DOF manipulator is taken as the main object to build an AM platform, and the mechanism of AM path planning of the manipulator is studied. The path planning algorithm combining the contour offset filling method and Hilbert curve filling is optimized by using a cubic uniform B-spline curve, and an AM path planning algorithm suitable for a six-DOF manipulator is obtained. A continuous printing path can be generated by this algorithm. It reduces the existence of long straight-line printing in a certain direction, thereby reducing the warpage deformation of the model and improving the molding quality of the model. The traditional three-axis AM device and the six-DOF AM platform were used to print two kinds of models. By comparing the printing time, the six-DOF AM platform was 43.70% and 37.94% shorter than the traditional three-axis AM device. The same model was printed on a six-DOF AM platform by using the parallel scanning filling method, the path planning algorithm combining contour offset and Hilbert curve, and the method proposed in this paper. Through experimental verification, the average warpage deformation of the model printed by the method proposed in this paper was reduced by 37.81% and 13.79%, respectively, compared with the other two methods. Cellular structures consist of foams, honeycombs, and lattices. Lattices have many outstanding properties over foams and honeycombs, such as lightweight, high strength, absorbing energy, and reducing vibration, which has been extensively studied and concerned. Because of excellent properties, lattice structures have been widely used in aviation, bio-engineering, automation, and other industrial fields. In particular, the application of additive manufacturing (AM) technology used for fabricating lattice structures has pushed the development of designing lattice structures to a new stage and made a breakthrough progress. By searching a large number of research literature, the primary work of this paper reviews the lattice structures. First, based on the introductions about lattices of literature, the definition and classification of lattice structures are concluded. Lattice structures are divided into two general categories in this paper: uniform and non-uniform. Second, the performance and application of lattice structures are introduced in detail. In addition, the fabricating methods of lattice structures, i.e., traditional processing and additive manufacturing, are evaluated. Third, for uniform lattice structures, the main concern during design is to develop highly functional unit cells, which in this paper is summarized as three different methods, i.e., geometric unit cell based, mathematical algorithm generated, and topology optimization. Forth, non-uniform lattice structures are reviewed from two aspects of gradient and topology optimization. These methods include Voronoi-tessellation, size gradient method (SGM), size matching and scaling (SMS), and homogenization, optimization, and construction (HOC). Background: The objective of this literature review is to systematically explore the supply chain (SC)-related issues of additive manufacturing (AM)-based production processes. For SC sustainability, efficiency, and performance improvements, the adoptation of disruptive technologies like AM plays a vital role, because the product's SC benefits in terms of reduced total lead time and costs. Methods: To explore the state-of-the-art influences of AM on the SC in this study, 978 papers published in peer-reviewed journals from 2004 to 2023 were retrieved, and 70 of these were identified as the most relevant and then reviewed. Results: As an outcome, the results of this review paper indicated a lack of documented studies in developing countries and, as a result, limited research works, for instance, in fashion industries were observed. In addition, AM best practices in the SC context have been identified and categorized as cost-related, time-related, inventor-related, as well as energy-, waste-, and environment-related factors, SC efficiency factors, and flexibility, marketing, and manufacturing-related factors. Conclusions: By identifying these categories, the study aims to contribute to the efforts of transforming traditional manufacturing into AM-based processes, for which a framework for the AM SC implementation is developed. With the growing significance of printed sensors on the electronics market, new demands on quality and reproducibility have arisen. While most printing processes on standard substrates (e.g., Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) are well-defined, the printing on substrates with rather porous, fibrous and rough surfaces (e.g., uncoated paper) contains new challenges. Especially in the case of inkjet-printing and other deposition techniques that require low-viscous nanoparticle inks the solvents and deposition materials might be absorbed, inhibiting the formation of homogeneous conductive layers. As part of this work, the sheet resistance of sintered inkjet-printed conductive silver (Ag-) nanoparticle cross structures on two different, commercially available, uncoated paper substrates using Van-der-Pauw's method is evaluated. The results are compared to the conductivity of well-studied, white heat stabilised and treated PET foil. While the sheet resistance on PET substrate is highly reproducible and the variations are solely process-dependent, the sheet resistance on uncoated paper depends more on the substrate properties themselves. Cellular materials offer industries the ability to close gaps in the material selection design space with properties not otherwise achievable by bulk, monolithic counterparts. Their superior specific strength, stiffness, and energy absorption, as well as their multi-functionality, makes them desirable for a wide range of applications. The objective of this paper is to compile and present a review of the open literature focusing on the energy absorption of periodic three-dimensional cellular materials. The review begins with the methodical cataloging of qualitative and quantitative elements from 100 papers in the available literature and then provides readers with a thorough overview of the state of this research field, discussing areas such as parent material(s), manufacturing methods, cell topologies, cross-section shapes for truss topologies, analysis methods, loading types, and test strain rates. Based on these collected data, areas of great and limited research are identified and future avenues of interest are suggested for the continued maturation and growth of this field, such as the development of a consistent naming and classification system for topologies; the creation of test standards considering additive manufacturing processes; further investigation of non-uniform and non-cylindrical struts on the performance of truss lattices; and further investigation into the performance of lattice materials under the impact of non-flat surfaces and projectiles. Finally, the numerical energy absorption (by mass and by volume) data of 76 papers are presented across multiple property selection charts, highlighting various materials, manufacturing methods, and topology groups. While there are noticeable differences at certain densities, the graphs show that the categorical differences within those groups have large overlap in terms of energy absorption performance and can be referenced to identify areas for further investigation and to help in the preliminary design process by researchers and industry professionals alike. Additive manufacturing (AM) offers unique capabilities in terms of design freedom and customization, contributing to sustainable manufacturing. However, energy efficiency remains a challenge in the widespread adoption of AM processes. Our analysis reveals a lack of standardization in the measurement and reporting of energy consumption, making it difficult to evaluate and compare the energy performance of various systems. The benefits of additive manufacturing (AM) are widely recognised, boosting the AM method's use in industry, while it is predicted AM will dominate the global manufacturing industry. Alas, 3D printing's growth is hindered by its sustainability. AM methods generate vast amounts of residuals considered as waste, which are disposed of. Additionally, the energy consumed, the materials used, and numerous other factors render AM unsustainable. This paper aims to bring forward all documented solutions in the literature. The spotlight is on potential solutions for the Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) AM, focusing on Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), as these are candidates for mass manufacturing by industry. Solutions are evaluated critically, to identify research gaps regarding the recyclability of residual material. Only then can AM dominate the manufacturing industry, which is extremely important since this is a milestone for our transition into sustainable manufacturing. This transition itself is a complex bottleneck on our quest for becoming a sustainable civilisation. Choosing the right metal AM equipment and material is a highly intricate process that forms a crucial part of every manufacturing company's strategic plan. This study undertakes a comprehensive comparison of the performance and material properties of three Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies: Powder Bed Fusion (PBF), Metal Filament Deposition Modeling (MFDM), and Bound Metal Deposition (BMD). An automotive nozzle was selected and manufactured using all three technologies and three metallic materials to understand their respective advantages and disadvantages. The samples were then subjected to a series of tests and evaluations, including dimensional accuracy, mechanical properties, microstructure, defects, manufacturability, and cost efficiency. The nozzle combinations were PBF in aluminum, MFDM in stainless steel, and BMD in hard tool steel. The results underscore significant differences in functionality, material characteristics, product quality, lead time, and cost efficiency, all of which are crucial factors in making equipment investment decisions. The conclusions drawn in this paper aim to assist automotive industry equipment experts in making informed decisions about the technology and materials to use for parts with characteristics like these. This paper presents an innovative method for fabricating reflectarray antennas using inkjet printing technology on flexible substrates, markedly enhancing integration and manufacturability compared to traditional PCB methods. The technique employs inkjet printing to deposit conductive inks directly onto a flexible polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrate, seamlessly integrating feed and reflectarray components without complex assembly processes. This streamlined approach not only reduces manufacturing complexity and costs but also improves mechanical flexibility, making it ideal for applications requiring deployable antennas. The design process includes an origami-inspired folding of the substrate to achieve the desired three-dimensional antenna structures, optimizing the focal length to dimension ratio (F/D) to ensure maximum efficiency and performance. The feed and the reflectarray geometry are optimized for an F/D of 0.6, which achieves high gain and aperture efficiency, demonstrated through detailed simulations and measurements. For normal incidence, the configuration achieves a peak gain of 9.3 dBi and 48% radiation efficiency at 10 GHz; for oblique incidence, it achieves 7.3 dBi and 40% efficiency. The study underscores the significant potential of inkjet-printed antennas in terms of cost-efficiency, precision, and versatility, paving the way for new advancements in antenna technology with a substantial impact on future communication systems. It is now well-known that the interaction between surface roughness and surface-breaking defects can significantly degrade the fatigue life of additively manufactured (AM) parts. This is also aptly illustrated in the author's recent study on the durability of wire and arc additively manufactured (WAAM) 18Ni 250 Maraging steel specimens, where it was reported that failure occurred due to fatigue crack growth that arose due to the interaction between the surface roughness and surface-breaking material defects. To improve the durability of an AM part, several papers have suggested the machining of rough surfaces. However, for complex geometries the fully machining of the entire rough surface is not always possible and the effect of the partial machining on durability is unknown. Therefore, this paper investigates if partial machining of WAAM 18Ni 250 Maraging steel surfaces will help to improve the durability of these specimens. Unfortunately, the result of this investigation has shown that partial machining may not significantly improve durability of WAAM 18Ni 250 Maraging steel specimens. Due to the order of surface roughness seen in WAAM 250 Maraging steel, the improvement to durability is only realized by full machining to completely remove the remnants of any print artefacts. This paper provides an overview on the use of virtual surgical planning (VSP) and point-of-care 3D printing (POC 3DP) in oral and cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) surgery based on a literature review. The authors searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase to find papers published between January 2015 and February 2022 in English, which describe human applications of POC 3DP in CMF surgery, resulting in 63 articles being included. The main review findings were as follows: most used clinical applications were anatomical models and cutting guides; production took place in-house or as "in-house—outsourced" workflows; the surgeon alone was involved in POC 3DP in 36 papers; the use of free versus paid planning software was balanced (50.72% vs. 49.27%); average planning time was 4.44 h; overall operating time decreased and outcomes were favorable, though evidence-based studies were limited; and finally, the heterogenous cost reports made a comprehensive financial analysis difficult. Additive manufacturing (AM) has arisen as a transformative technology for manufacturing complex geometries with enhanced mechanical properties, particularly in the realm of continuous fiber-reinforced polymer composites (CFRPCs). Among various AM techniques, fused deposition modeling (FDM) stands out as a promising method for the fabrication of CFRPCs due to its versatility, ease of use, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. Several research papers on the AM of CFRPs via FDM were summarized and therefore this review paper provides a critical examination of the process-printing parameters influencing the AM process, with a focus on their impact on mechanical properties. This review covers details of factors such as fiber orientation, layer thickness, nozzle diameter, fiber volume fraction, printing temperature, and infill design, extracted from the existing literature. Through a visual representation of the process parameters (printing and material) and properties (mechanical, physical, and thermal), this paper aims to separate out the optimal processing parameters that have been inferred from various research studies. Furthermore, this analysis critically evaluates the current state-of-the-art research, highlighting advancements, applications, filament production methods, challenges, and opportunities for further development in this field. In comparison to short fibers, continuous fiber filaments can render better strength; however, delamination issues persist. Various parameters affect the printing process differently, resulting in several limitations that need to be addressed. Signifying the relationship between printing parameters and mechanical properties is vital for optimizing CFRPC fabrication via FDM, enabling the realization of lightweight, high-strength components for various industrial applications. This paper explores the new potential strategy of using fine recycled aggregates (fRA) derived from waste 3D printed concrete (3DPC) as a substitute for cement in additive manufacturing. This study hypothesizes that fRA can optimize mixture design, reduce cement content, and contribute to sustainable construction practices. Experimental programs were conducted to evaluate the fresh and hardened properties, printability window, and buildability of 3DPC mixes containing fRA. Mixes with replacement rates of cement with fRA by 10 vol%, 20 vol%, 30 vol%, 40 vol%, and 50 vol% were produced. A comprehensive experimental protocol consisting of rheological studies (static and dynamic yield stress), dynamic elastic modulus determination (first 24 h of hydration), flexural and compressive strengths (2 d and 28 d), and an open porosity test was performed. The obtained results were verified by printing tests. In addition, an economic and environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of the mixes was performed. The results indicate that up to 50 vol% cement replacement with fRA is feasible, albeit with some technical drawbacks. While fRA incorporation enhances sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions and material costs, it adversely affects the printability window, green strength, setting time, and mechanical properties, particularly in the initial curing stages. Therefore, with higher replacement rates (above 20 vol%), potential optimization efforts are needed to mitigate drawbacks such as reduced green strength and buildability. Notably, replacement rates of up to 20 vol% can be successfully used without compromising the overall material properties or altering the mixture design. The LCA analysis shows that reducing the cement content and increasing the fRA addition results in a significant reduction in mix cost (up to 24%) and a substantial decrease in equivalent CO2 emissions (up to 48%). This purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between crack growth equations based on Elber's original plastic wake induced crack closure concept and the fatigue threshold as defined by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) fatigue test standard ASTM E647-15el. It is shown that, for a number of conventionally manufactured metals, the function U(R), where R is the ratio of the minimum to maximum applied remote stress, that is used to relate the stress intensity factor ΔK to the effective stress intensity factor ΔKeff is inversely proportional to the fatigue threshold ΔKth(R). This finding also results in a simple closed form equation that relates the crack opening stress intensity factor Ko(R) to ΔK, Kmax, and the fatigue threshold terms ΔKth(R) and ΔKeff,th. It is also shown that plotting da/dN as function of ΔK/ΔKth(R) would appear to have the potential to help to identify the key fracture mechanics parameters that characterise the effect of test temperature on crack growth. As such, for conventionally manufactured metals, plotting da/dN as function of ΔK/ΔKth(R) would appear to be a useful addition to the tools available to assess the fracture mechanics parameters affecting crack growth. Additive manufacturing of soft magnetic materials is a promising technology for creating topologically optimized electrical machines. High-performance electrical machines can be made from high-silicon-content FeSi alloys. Fe-6.5wt%Si material has exceptional magnetic properties; however, manufacturing this steel with the classical cold rolling methodology is not possible due to the brittleness of this material. Laser powder bed fusion technology (L-PBF) offers a solution to this problem. Finding the optimal printing parameters is a challenging task. Nevertheless, it is crucial to resolve the brittleness of the created materials so they can be used in commercial applications. The temperature dependence of magnetic hysteresis properties of Fe-6.5wt%Si materials is presented in this paper. The magnetic hysteresis properties were examined from 20 °C to 120 °C. The hysteresis measurements were made by a precision current generator–based hysteresis measurement tool, which uses fast Fourier transformation–based filtering techniques to increase the accuracy of the measurements. The details of the applied scalar hysteresis sensor and the measurement uncertainties were discussed first in the paper; then, three characteristic points of the static hysteresis curve of the ten L-PBF-manufactured identical toroidal cores were investigated and compared at different temperatures. These measurements show that, despite the volumetric ratio of the porosities being below 0.5%, the mean crack length in the samples is not significant for the examined samples. These small defects can cause a significant 5% decrement in some characteristic values of the examined hysteresis curve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a field with both industrial and academic significance. Computer-aided optimisation has brought advances to this field over the years, but challenges and areas of improvement still remain. Design to execution inaccuracies, void formation, material anisotropy, and surface quality are examples of remaining challenges. These challenges can be improved via some of the trending optimisation topics, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML); STL correction, replacement, or removal; slicing algorithms; and simulations. This paper reviews AM and its history with a special focus on the printing process and how it can be optimised using computer software. The most important new contribution is a survey of the present challenges connected with the prevailing optimisation topics. This can be seen as a foundation for future research. The precision needed in optometric measurements for the correct customization of progressive lenses usually falls short of what is required for accurate prescriptions. This usually stems from the fact that most measurements are obtained using outdated methods, employing either rulers or protractors. While there is equipment available for precise measurements, the cost of purchase and ownership is usually prohibitive. In this context, due to constant progress in high-resolution cameras along with the processing power of handheld devices, another solution has presented itself in different iterations in the past decade, as put forward by different manufacturers of optical lenses. Such a system comprises a mobile computing device with image capture and processing capabilities (tablet or smartphone), along with a marker support system to be mounted on the user's glasses frames. Aside from cost, the ease of implementation and usage, the advantage of such a system is that the parameters, as measured, allow for better customization, since the eyewear is already in the position in which it will be used. It allows the optometrist to measure parameters such as interpupillary distance, pantoscopic angle and the curvature of the eyewear in relation to the user's own specific shape and size. This paper proposes a model of a marker support system that is easy to use, precise, low in cost and has minimal impact on the measurements obtained by the optometrist. As such, this paper examines the steps for determining the shape needed for supports in relation to the measurements that need to be taken; a finite element analysis of the support was proposed, along with various tests and modifications that were made to the device until a specific shape and material combination was found that satisfied all of the parameters required. Four-dimensional printing is a process in which a 3D-printed object is intentionally transformed in response to an external stimulus such as temperature, which is useful when the final geometry of a 3D-printed part is not easily manufacturable. One method to demonstrate this is to print a part made of thin strips of material on a sheet of paper, heat the part, and allow it to cool. This causes the part to curl due to the difference in the thermal expansion coefficients of the paper and plastic. In an attempt to quantify the effect of different temperatures on various materials, samples of three common 3D printing filaments, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG), and polylactic acid (PLA), were heated at different temperatures (85 °C, 105 °C, and 125 °C) for intervals of 15 min and then allowed to cool until curling stopped. This heating and cooling cycle was repeated three times for each sample to determine if repeated heating and cooling influenced the curling. Each sample was filmed as it was cooling, which allowed the radius of curvature to be measured by tracking the uppermost point of the part, knowing the arc length, and calibrating the video based on a known linear length. After three cycles, all three materials showed a decrease in the radius of curvature (tighter curl) as heating temperature increased, with PLA showing the trend much more predominantly than ABS and PETG. Furthermore, for PETG and PLA, the radius of curvature decreased with each cycle at all temperatures, with the decrease being more significant from cycle 1 to 2 than cycle 2 to 3. Conversely, ABS only shared this trend at 125 °C. The findings of this work can provide guidelines to users on the temperature dosage for the mass manufacturing of complex geometries such as packaging, self-assembly robots, and drug delivery applications. In the last decades, digital manufacturing has constituted the headline of what is starting to be known as the 'fourth industrial revolution', where the fabrication processes comprise a hybrid of technologies that blur the lines between fundamental sciences, engineering, and even medicine as never seen before. One of the reasons why this mixture is inevitable has to do with the fact that we live in an era that incorporates technology in every single aspect of our daily lives. In the industry, this has translated into fabrication versatility, as follows: design changes on a final product are just one click away, fabrication chains have evolved towards continuous roll-to roll processes, and, most importantly, the overall costs and fabrication speeds are matching and overcoming most of the traditional fabrication methods. Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) stands out as a versatile set of fabrication techniques, being the closest approach to an all-in-one additive manufacturing method compatible with virtually any material. In this technique, laser radiation is used to propel the material of interest and deposit it at user-defined locations with high spatial resolution. By selecting the proper laser parameters and considering the interaction of the laser light with the material, it is possible to transfer this technique from robust inorganic materials to fragile biological samples. In this work, we first present a brief introduction on the current developments of the LIFT technique by surveying recent scientific review publications. Then, we provide a general research overview by making an account of the publication and citation numbers of scientific papers on the LIFT technique considering the last three decades. At the same time, we highlight the geographical distribution and main research institutions that contribute to this scientific output. Three-dimensional concrete printing technology is currently a very topical and developing subject. There is a large number of applications worldwide where this technology can be used. In connection with this technology, the development of custom industrial robotic systems and their control is essential. Conventional closed-loop control system platforms do not provide sufficiently flexible solutions. This paper presents a control system for a unique printing robot that, thanks to its openness and unified platform, will enable simple and fast analysis and testing of key aspects in terms of control and guidance of the printing robot for additive manufacturing applications in the construction industry. The aim of this paper is to introduce the concept of an open PLC-based control system and to demonstrate its usefulness in the task of designing and implementing model-based control. All steps, from the analysis of the printing robot itself and identification of inertial parameters to the actual design and implementation of the control, can be executed in a unified Matlab/Simulink environment using various add-ons and toolboxes thanks to the open control system platform. This solution brings significant savings in terms of programming and prototyping time. Additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as a transformative technology for various industries, enabling the production of complex and customized parts. However, ensuring the quality and reliability of AM parts remains a critical challenge. Thus, image-based fault monitoring has gained significant attention as an efficient approach for detecting and classifying faults in AM processes. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of image-based fault monitoring in AM, focusing on recent developments and future directions. Specifically, the proponents garnered relevant papers from 2019 to 2023, gathering a total of 53 papers. This paper discusses the essential techniques, methodologies, and algorithms employed in image-based fault monitoring. Furthermore, recent developments are explored such as the use of novel image acquisition techniques, algorithms, and methods. In this paper, insights into future directions are provided, such as the need for more robust image processing algorithms, efficient data acquisition and analysis methods, standardized benchmarks and datasets, and more research in fault monitoring. Agriculturally derived biowastes can be transformed into a diverse range of materials, including powders, fibers, and filaments, which can be used in additive manufacturing methods. This review study reports a study that analyzes the existing literature on the development of novel materials from agriculturally derived biowastes for additive manufacturing methods. A review was conducted of 57 selected publications since 2016 covering various agriculturally derived biowastes, different additive manufacturing methods, and potential large-scale applications of additive manufacturing using these materials. Wood, fish, and algal cultivation wastes were also included in the broader category of agriculturally derived biowastes. Further research and development are required to optimize the use of agriculturally derived biowastes for additive manufacturing, particularly with regard to material innovation, improving print quality and mechanical properties, as well as exploring large-scale industrial applications. The cellular automata (CA) method has played an important role in the research and development of metallic materials. CA can interpret the microstructure changes of materials and obtain more abundant, accurate and intuitive information of microstructure evolution than conventional methods. CA can visually represent the process of grain formation, growth, development and change to us in a graphical way, which can assist us in analysis, thinking and solving problems. In the last five years, the application of CA in materials research has been rapidly developed, and CA has begun to occupy an increasingly important position in the simulation research of metallic materials. After introducing the advantages and limitations of CA compared to other widely used simulation methods, the purpose of this paper is to review the recent application progress on the microstructure simulation of metallic materials using CA, such as solidification, recrystallization, phase transformation and carbide precipitation occurring during forming and heat treatment. Specifically, recent research advances on microstructure simulation by CA in the fields of additive manufacturing, welding, asymmetrical rolling, corrosion prevention, etc., are also elaborated in this paper. In this review article, we focus on the relationship between permanent magnets and the electric motor, as this relationship has not been covered in a review paper before. With the increasing focus on battery research, other parts of the electric system have been neglected. To make electrification a smooth transition, as has been promised by governing bodies, we need to understand and improve the electric motor and its main component, the magnet. Today's review papers cover only the engineering perspective of the electric motor or the material-science perspective of the magnetic material, but not both together, which is a crucial part of understanding the needs of electric-motor design and the possibilities that a magnet can give them. We review the road that leads to today's state-of-the-art in electric motors and magnet design and give possible future roads to tackle the obstacles ahead and reach the goals of a fully electric transportation system. With new technologies now available, like additive manufacturing and artificial intelligence, electric motor designers have not yet exploited the possibilities the new freedom of design brings. New out-of-the-box designs will have to emerge to realize the full potential of the new technology. We also focus on the rare-earth crisis and how future price fluctuations can be avoided. This paper deals with the electromagnetic characterization of a laminated toroidal ferromagnetic core made through additive manufacturing, specifically using the laser powder bed fusion process. The continuing demand for increasingly efficient, lightweight, and higher performance electric machines is creating huge challenges in the design and realization of new electric motor solutions. The constant improvements in additive manufacturing technologies have prompted researchers to investigate the possibility of adopting these production techniques for the manufacture of high-value electric motors. For these reasons, this paper investigates the ferromagnetic characteristics of an additively manufactured core made with FeSi6.5 powder. The BH curve and the specific iron losses of the processed material have been measured so that they can be compared with a commercial lamination, and have the possibility of carrying out more precise finite element simulations. This research paper aims to explore the mechanical characteristics of polyamide PA12 (PA12) as a 3D material printed utilizing Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) and HP MultiJet Fusion (HP MJF) technologies in order to design and manufacture forearm orthoses. The study assessed the flowability of the materials used and compared the mechanical performance of PA12 with each other using tensile, flexure, and impact tests in five different fabrication orientations: X, Y, Z, tilted 45° XZ, and tilted 45° YZ. The results of the study provide, firstly—the data for testing the quality of the applied polyamide powder blend and, secondly—the data for the design of the orthosis geometry from the aspect of its strength parameters and the safety of construction. The mechanical parameters of SLS specimens had less variation than MJF specimens in a given orientation. The difference in tensile strength between the 3D printing technologies tested was 1.8%, and flexural strength was 4.7%. A process analysis of the forearm orthoses revealed that the HP MJF 5200 system had a higher weekly production capacity than the EOS P396 in a production variance based on obtaining maximum strength parameters and a variance based on maximizing economic efficiency. The results suggest that medical device manufacturers can use additive manufacturing technologies to produce prototypes and small-batch parts for medical applications. In this paper, electroless nickel plating is explored for the protection of binder-jetting-based additively manufactured (AM) composite materials. Electroless nickel plating was attempted on binder-jetted composites composed of stainless steel and bronze, resulting in differences in the physicochemical properties. We investigated the impact of surface finishing, plating solution chemistry, and plating parameters to attain a wide range of surface morphologies and roughness levels. We employed the Keyence microscope to quantitatively evaluate dramatically different surface properties before and after the coating of AM composites. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a wide range of microstructural properties in relation to each combination of surface finishing and coating parameters. We studied chempolishing, plasma cleaning, and organic cleaning as the surface preparation methods prior to coating. We found that surface preparation dictated the surface roughness. Taguchi statistical analysis was performed to investigate the relative strength of experimental factors and interconnectedness among process parameters to attain optimum coating qualities. The quantitative impacts of phosphorous level, temperature, surface preparation, and time factor on the roughness of the nickel-plated surface were 17.95%, 8.2%, 50.02%, and 13.21%, respectively. On the other hand, the quantitative impacts of phosphorous level, temperature, surface preparation, and time factor on the thickness of nickel plating were 35.12%, 41.40%, 3.87%, and 18.24%, respectively. The optimum combination of the factors' level projected the lowest roughness of Ra at 7.76 µm. The optimum combination of the factors' level projected the maximum achievable thickness of ~149 µm. Gyroid structures are among the most widely used three-dimensional elements produced by various additive manufacturing technologies. This paper focuses on a metrological analysis of Flexfill 92A material specimens with a relative density (25 to 85%) using industrial computer tomography. The results show that for a given structure, the best method is to use surface determination with the closure of internal defects in the material. The analysis implies that the smallest deviations of the specimens' external dimensions were achieved with respect to the CAD model at the highest relative densities. The wall thickness shows the smallest percentage change of 0.5685 at 45% relative density and the largest at 25% and 85% relative density. The nominal–actual comparison of manufactured specimens to the CAD model shows the smallest cumulative deviation of 0.209 mm at 90% and 25% relative density, while it slightly increases with increasing relative density. All produced specimens have a smaller material volume than their theoretical volume value, while the percentage change in volume is up to 8.6%. The surface of specimens is larger compared with the theoretical values and the percentage change reaches up to 25.3%. The percentage of pores in the specimens increases with increasing relative density and reaches 6%. The acquired knowledge will be applied in the framework of research focused on the possibilities of using additive manufacturing to produce a skeleton of rubber–textile conveyor belts. Material jetting technology is gaining popularity, especially in polymer science, because of their high accuracy for additive manufacturing (AM) products. This paper aims to investigate the quality of micro-holes that are oriented in three basic directions, and manufactured by the material jetting AM process. This paper proposes a novel methodology to evaluate the accuracy of micro-holes features by using a transparent artifact. A test artifact with horizontal and vertical micro-holes in it, with industrial applications, was designed. Micro-holes were placed on planar and curve surfaces. Samples were manufactured by PolyJet technology from a translucent photopolymer resin which allows a facile investigation (by microscopy) of the inner structure of the micro-holes. The features of ten micro-holes printed in matte and glossy finish type, with diameters in coarse and medium options, according to ISO/ASTM 52902, were analyzed. Quality analysis of the micro-holes features was performed by microscopy investigations. The effects of main factors on the deviation of the micro-hole diameter were investigated by using the statistical design of experiments, and four control factors were considered. The best results were obtained for sample printed in matte finishing with the micro-holes oriented along the x-axis and z-axis. The smallest diameter of the micro-holes obtained by PolyJet technology on an EDEN 350 machine was 0.5 mm, but in industrial applications for a facile post-processing, a higher diameter is recommended to be used. A confirmatory experiment on a wing sample, with a number of micro-holes of the same diameter and a large length to diameter ratio of the micro-holes, was performed, and the repeatability of the results was confirmed. Three-dimensionally printed polyetheretherketone (PEEK) materials are promising for fabricating customized dental abutments. This study aimed to investigate the adhesive property of a 3D-printed PEEK material. The effects of surface treatment and temporary crown materials on shear bond strength were evaluated. A total of 108 PEEK discs were 3D printed by fused-filament fabrication. Surface treatments, including sandblasting, abrasive paper grinding, and CO2 laser ablation, were applied to the PEEK discs, with the untreated specimens set as the control. Afterward, the surface topographies of each group were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM, n = 1) and roughness measurements (n = 7). After preparing the bonding specimens with three temporary crown materials (Artificial teeth resin (ATR), 3M™ Filtek™ Supreme Flowable Restorative (FR), and Cool Temp NATURAL (CTN)), the shear bond strength was measured (n = 6), and the failure modes were analyzed by microscopy and SEM. The results showed that ATR exhibited a significantly higher shear bond strength compared to FR and CTN (p < 0.01), and the PEEK surfaces treated by sandblasting and abrasive paper grinding showed a statistically higher shear bond strength compared to the control (p < 0.05). The PH 13-8 Mo family of steels belong to the martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steels (MPHSSs) category, which exhibits a good combination of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Additive manufacturing (AM) offers advantages, including reduced material waste and the capability to produce complex, near-net-shape parts. Consequently, the application of AM techniques to the PH 13-8 Mo family is being increasingly explored across various industries. This review paper presents the existing literature on the topic and provides an overview. The review starts by presenting information about the PH 13-8 Mo family, including microstructure, chemical compositions, heat treatments, and mechanical properties. Afterwards, the work focuses on presenting the microstructure and resulting properties of PH 13-8 Mo family processed by three different additive manufacturing processes: Powder Bed Fusion using a Laser Beam (PBF-LB), Directed Energy Deposition using an Electric Arc (DED-Arc), and Directed Energy Deposition using a Laser Beam (DED-LB), both in their as-built condition and following post-processing heat treatments. The review concludes with a summary and outlook that highlights existing knowledge gaps and underscores the need for further research to tailor the microstructural evolution and enhance the properties. Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques are among the fastest-growing technologies for producing even the most geometrically complex models. Unfortunately, the lack of development of metrology guidelines for these methods, related to dimensional and geometry accuracy and surface roughness, significantly limits the commercialization of finished products manufactured using these methods. This paper aims to evaluate the macro- and micro-geometry of models manufactured using the PolyJet method from three types of photopolymer resins: Digital ABS Plus, RGD 720, and Vero Clear. For this purpose, test parts were designed and then manufactured on an Object 350 Connex3 3D printer. The Atos II Triple Scan optical system and the InfiniteFocusG4 microscope were used to evaluate macro- and micro-geometry, respectively. For both systems, measurement procedures were developed to obtain statistical results for evaluating geometric accuracy and surface roughness parameters. In the case of macro-geometry, for Digital ABS Plus and Vero Clear materials, 50% of the central deviations (between first quartile Q1 and third quartile Q3) lie within the range (−0.06, 0.03 mm) and for RGD 720 material within the range (−0.08, 0.01 mm). For micro-geometry, the arithmetic mean height (Sa) values for the Digital ABS Plus and Vero Clear samples were approximately 1.6 and 2.0 µm, respectively, while for RGD 720, it was 15.9 µm. The total roughness height expressed by reduced peak height (Spk) + core height (Sk) + reduced dale depth (Svk) for the Digital ABS Plus and Vero Clear samples was approximately 9.1 and 10.5 µm, respectively, while for the RGD 720, it was 101.9 µm. With the rapid advancement of 3D-printing technology, additive manufacturing using FDM extrusion has emerged as a prominent method in manufacturing. However, it encounters certain limitations, notably in surface quality and dimensional accuracy. Addressing issues related to stability and surface roughness necessitates the integration of 3D-printing technology with traditional machining, a strategy known as the hybrid technique. This paper presents a study of the surface geometric parameters and microstructure of plastic parts produced by FDM. Sleeve-shaped samples were 3D-printed from polyethylene terephthalate glycol material using variable layer heights of 0.1 mm and 0.2 mm and then subjected to the turning process with PVD-coated DCMT11T304 turning inserts using variable cutting parameters. The cutting depth was constant at 0.82 mm. Surface roughness values were correlated with the cutting tool feed rate and the printing layer height applied. The selected specimen's microstructure was studied with a Zeiss EVO MA 15 scanning electron microscope. The roundness was measured with a Keyence VR-6200 3D optical profilometer. The research results confirmed that the additional application of turning, combined with a reduction in the feed rate (0.0506 mm/rev) and the height of the printed layer (0.1 mm), reduced the surface roughness of the sleeve (Ra = 1.94 μm) and increased its geometric accuracy. This paper studied the tribological behaviour of parts manufactured using fused filament fabrication (FFF) technology with PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol) coated with IGUS tribological filaments. The research focuses on analysing how these multi-material parts behave under different loads. The objective of this study is to evaluate the wear resistance and friction coefficient of parts coated with different thicknesses of IGUS material. The methodology employs pin-on-disc (PoD) tribological tests to measure behaviour under various load conditions and coating thicknesses. The results indicate that increasing the coating thickness improves surface stability and reduces roughness, although it does not significantly affect the average friction coefficient. This research concludes that coating thickness has a moderate impact on surface quality and that the applied load significantly influences the depth and width of the wear groove. This contribution is valuable for the field of additive manufacturing as it provides a better understanding of how to optimise the tribological properties of parts manufactured using FFF, which is crucial for industrial applications where wear and friction are critical factors. This paper analyses mechanical property prediction through Machine Learning for continuous fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites printed using the novel Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing technique. The composite is formed by a nylon-based matrix and continuous fiber (carbon, Kevlar, or fiberglass). From the literature, the elastic modulus and tensile strength were taken along with printing parameters like fiber content, fiber fill type, matrix lattice, matrix fill density, matrix deposition angle, and fiber deposition angle. Such data were fed to several supervised learning algorithms: Ridge Regression, Bayesian Ridge Regression, Lasso Regression, K-Nearest Neighbor Regression, CatBoost Regression, Decision Tree Regression, Random Forest Regression, and Support Vector Regression. The Machine Learning analysis confirmed that fiber content is the most influential parameter in elasticity (E) and strength (σ). The results show that the K-Nearest Neighbors and CatBoost provided the closest predictions for E and σ compared to the other models, and the tree-based model presented the narrowest error distribution. The computational metrics point to a size versus prediction time tradeoff between these two best predictors, and adopting the prediction time as the most relevant criterion leads to the conclusion that the CatBoost model can be considered, when compared to the others tested, the most appropriate solution to work as a predictor in the task at hand. Featured Application: Additive Manufacturing (AM) represents new and very promising manufacturing processes. The results can be applied immediately in the manufacturing industry in order to obtain significant decreases of the costs in some specific domains. By means of its facilities, AM brings several advantages in comparison with the classical manufacturing technologies. Nowadays, there are a huge number of unexplored directions, which assure AM will become a very powerful manufacturing process in the next period, with an undoubted low cost and reduced material consumption, as well as optimal stiffness and competitiveness technology. Between the unexplored (or less-explored) directions, one has to mention the dimensional methods' involvement in gaining an optimal, highly competitive final product. This means that instead of the real structural element, named the prototype, the engineers will perform high-accuracy tests on the attached reduced-scale models, whose experimental results are extended to the prototype by means of the deduced model law (ML). The authors, based on their previous theoretical research as well as experimental investigations, offer a new approach, which is less implemented in AM technologies. Based on the obtained results, these dimensional methods are very promising, especially the last one, the so-called Modern Dimensional Analysis (MDA), conceived by Thomas Szirtes and described in the following paper. Starting with the nowadays-applied dimensional methods' critical analysis, the authors will present evidence for the advantages of MDA, especially on the polymer-based AM technology. They will prove that MDA represents a very promising, as well as easy approach, which through its implementation can offer a higher competitiveness for AM technologies. As an illustration of the advantages of MDA, the authors conceived several MDA approaches for a given structural element's case (a cantilever beam, with an internal-ribbed structure loaded at its free end by means of a vertical concentrated load), which, through their high accuracy in experimental-validated MLs, offer very good accuracy in model–prototype correlation. The deviations between the effective measured values of the displacements on the prototypes and those predicted, based on the values of the measurements on the models assigned to the prototypes by the validated MLs, were 1.06, 1.60, and 2.35%, respectively. In the authors' opinion, MDA can represent a starting point for conceiving a highly competitive product with an optimal filling, as well as the deposition of layers using AM technologies. This paper investigates the impact of halloysite nanotube (HNT) content on mechanical and shape memory properties of additively manufactured polyurethane (PU)/HNT nanocomposites. The inclusion of 8 wt% HNTs increases their tensile strength by 30.4% when compared with that of virgin PU at 44.75 MPa. Furthermore, consistently significant increases in tensile modulus, compressive strength and modulus, as well as specific energy absorption are also manifested by 47.2%, 34.0%, 125% and 72.7% relative to neat PU at 2.29 GPa, 3.88 MPa, 0.28 GPa and 0.44 kJ/kg respectively. However, increasing HNT content reduces lateral strain due to the restricted mobility of polymeric chains, leading to a decrease in negative Poisson's ratio (NPR). As such, shape recovery ratio and time of PU/HNT nanocomposites are reduced by 9 and 45% with the inclusion of 10 wt% HNTs despite an increasing shape fixity ratio up to 12% relative to those of neat PU. Pore and crack formation in parts produced by additive manufacturing (AM) processes, such as laser powder bed fusion, is one of the issues associated with AM technology. Surface and subsurface cracks and pores are induced during the printing process, undermining the printed part durability. In-situ detection of defects will enable the real-time or intermittent control of the process, resulting in higher product quality. In this paper, a new eddy current-based probe design is proposed to detect these defects in parts with various defects that mimic pores and cracks in additively manufactured parts. Electromagnetic finite element analyses were carried out to optimize the probe geometry, followed by fabricating a prototype. Artificial defects were seeded in stainless steel plates to assess the feasibility of detecting various flaws with different widths and lengths. The smallest defect detected had a 0.17 mm radius for blind holes and a 0.43 mm notch with a 5 mm length. All the defects were 0.5 mm from the surface, and the probe was placed on the back surface of the defects. The surface roughness of the tested samples was less than 2 µm. Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a promising metal additive manufacturing technology for producing functional components. However, there are still a lot of obstacles to overcome before this technology is considered mature and trustworthy for wider industrial applications. One of the biggest obstacles is the difficulty in ensuring the repeatability of process and the reproducibility of products. To tackle this challenge, a prerequisite is to represent and communicate the data from the part realisation process in an unambiguous and rigorous manner. In this paper, a semantically enriched LPBF part data model is developed using a category theory-based modelling approach. Firstly, a set of objects and morphisms are created to construct categories for design, process planning, part build, post-processing, and qualification. Directed energy deposition-laser beam/powder (DED-LB/Powder) is an additive manufacturing process that is gaining popularity in the manufacturing industry due to its numerous advantages, particularly in repairing operations. However, its application is often limited to case studies due to some critical issues that need to be addressed, such as the degree of internal porosity. This paper investigates the effect of the most relevant process parameters of the DED-LB/Powder process on the level and distribution of porosity. Results indicate that, among the process parameters examined, porosity is less affected by travel speed and more influenced by powder mass flow rate and laser power. Additionally, a three-dimensional finite element transient model was introduced, which was able to predict the development and location of lack-of-fusion pores along the building direction. This paper investigates the impact of various manufacturing parameters on the mechanical and tribological properties of high-performance PLA (polylactic acid) parts produced using Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). It addresses the challenges associated with optimizing additive manufacturing processes, particularly for polymer-based materials, and emphasizes the importance of understanding how factors such as build orientation, layer thickness, and infill density influence the final properties of the printed parts. This study highlights the improvements that can be achieved by incorporating reinforcements such as carbon fibers and graphene nanoplatelets into PLA, enhancing its mechanical strength and wear resistance. Experimental results show that optimizing printing parameters can significantly reduce the coefficient of friction and wear, leading to better performance in applications involving movement and mechanical stress. Key findings include the observation that higher infill densities and specific build orientations improve the fatigue life and tensile strength of PLA parts. Additionally, post-printing thermal treatments can alleviate internal stresses and enhance interlayer adhesion, further improving mechanical properties. Nowadays, H13 hot work steel is a commonly used hot work die material in the industry; however, its creep behavior for additively manufactured H13 steel parts has not been widely investigated. This research paper examines the impact of volumetric energy density (VED), a critical parameter in additive manufacturing (AM), and the effect of post heat-treatment nitrification on the creep behavior of H13 hot work tool steel, which is constructed through selective laser melting (SLM), which is a powder bed fusion process according to ISO/ASTM 52900:2021. The study utilizes nanoindentation tests to investigate the creep response and the associated parameters such as the steady-state creep strain rate. Measurements and observations taken during the holding phase offer a valuable understanding of the behavior of the studied material. The findings of this study highlight a substantial influence of both VED and nitrification on several factors including hardness, modulus of elasticity, indentation depth, and creep displacement. Interestingly, the creep strain rate appears to be largely unaltered by these parameters. This paper presents novel configurations for additively manufactured lattice structures, including helical and elliptic designs, in addition to the pyramid base model. Functionally graded versions of the pyramid and elliptic lattice structures are developed by considering desirable relative densities in each layer. The lattice structures were manufactured using Ti-6Al-4V powder in a three-dimensional selective laser melting printer. The averaged porosities are 0.86, 0.91, 0.916, 0.93 and 0.74 for pyramid, functionally graded pyramid, elliptic, functionally graded elliptic and helical, respectively. The mechanical behavior of the lattice structures was characterized through compression tests using a universal testing machine and computationally analyzed using finite element code. The results indicate that the elliptic and functionally graded elliptic lattices have elastic moduli of 0.76 and 0.67 GPa, while the yield strengths are 41.32 and 32.24 MPa, respectively, in comparison to cancellous bone. Moreover, pyramid, functionally graded pyramid, and helical lattices show relatively lower elastic moduli of 0.57, 0.65 and 0.41 GPa and higher yield strengths of 54.1, 52.15 and 61.02 MPa, respectively. This could be an indication that they are fit for cortical bones. All samples have low elastic moduli coupled with high yield strengths. This could reduce or eliminate stress shielding, making them suitable for some load-bearing bio-inspired applications.
