This study examined public comments on Twitter in the wake of three mass shootings in the United States during the summer of 2022. A total of 1,500 tweets were assessed (N = 1,500) for sentiment, risks presented, attribution of blame, and outrage. A sample of 500 tweets was taken following the Buffalo, New York, supermarket shooting; a sample of 500 tweets was taken following the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting; and a sample of 500 tweets was taken following the Highland Park, Illinois, Fourth of July parade shooting. Results show that risk, blame, and outrage differed significantly between the three situations in a variety of ways. These differences and possible reasons for them are further discussed. This study provides valuable insight on social media conversations about mass shootings – a timely subject that continues to plague the country and lead to polarizing opinions and divisiveness. The study also serves a practical function, as the findings can be presented to government organizations and social media organizations alike as critical insight into public perceptions, it can assist in identifying problematic speech online, and it can inform the development of social media guidelines in maintaining civil discord. Governmental natural resource entities often use surveys to gather information from the public about wildlife management and conservation policies. Response rate is a metric for understanding how many individuals participate in a survey. Higher response rates can reduce costs and sampling effort and improve the reliability and generalizability of survey findings. However, response rates may be negatively influenced by a distrust in government. Our study evaluated if response rates would differ based on the survey sponsor. We sent a survey to hunters in Georgia, USA that contained either university or governmental agency branding. Response rates did not differ among the two surveys and sentiment analysis of open-ended responses revealed that sentiments of respondents were similar between groups. Although these results suggest branding might not have major impacts on responses, further investigation is needed to determine the effect of sponsorship and other influential factors that both enhance and diminish response rates. Despite the growing visibility of the asexual community across the globe, little is known about how individuals on the asexual spectrum navigate their (a)sexual experiences. Asexual individuals may be highly vulnerable to sexual violence victimization due to prejudice against their lack of sexual attraction. Perpetrators may seek to pressure asexual individuals into sexual activities by invalidating their asexuality or manipulating their need for emotional intimacy. Such non-consensual sexual acts or behaviors may have a profound impact on asexual individuals. The present study aimed to examine the prevalence of sexual violence victimization and its relationship with substance use among individuals identifying on the asexual spectrum. The data for this study were derived from a global sample of 8,752 individuals on the asexual spectrum from the Ace Community Survey. The results indicated that 67.4% of the participants had experienced at least one form of sexual violence victimization in their lifetime. Experiences of sexual violence were related to more frequent engagement in substance use over the past year. Additionally, the results showed that compared with asexual individuals, graysexual and demisexual individuals were more likely to experience sexual violence, which was linked to substance use. Given the widespread prevalence and detrimental effects of sexual violence victimization, it is important to integrate asexual perspectives into prevention and intervention efforts, while simultaneously raising public awareness about affirmative consent and boundaries. The study also offers significant implications for trauma-informed care, public education, and social policies that address the unique needs and experiences of this population. Life balance is a new and important concept in occupational therapy. New measurements are needed to assess and evaluate life balance and interventions aimed to achieve this concept. This article describes the test-retest reliability of three life balance measures: the Activity Calculator (AC), Activity Card Sort (ACS-NL(18-64)) and Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ11-NL). Data collection took place among 50 participants with neuromuscular diseases: facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD, n = 25) or mitochondrial myopathy (MM, n = 25). The AC, the ACS-NL(18–64) and the OBQ11-NL were assessed twice with an interval of one week. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC-agreement) were applied to examine test-retest reliability. The ICC of the AC-average total day score was.95 (95% CI.91-.97), whereas the ICC of the weights allocated to each activity was 0.80 (95% CI.77–0.82). The ICC of the ACS-NL(18–64) percentage retained activities was 0.92 (95% CI 0.86 − 0.96) and the ICC of the importance score per activity was-.76 (95% CI. 0.68–0.89). The ICC of the OBQ11-NL total score was.76 (95% CI 0.62–0.86). All three tools showed good to excellent test-retest reliability in a sample of patients with FSHD or MM, which is promising for its use in clinical practice and research. The AC, ACS-NL(18–64) and the OBQ11-NL are promising, reliable measures of life balance in patients with neuromuscular diseases. The study provided a qualitative investigation into problematic mobile phone use among the youth athlete population. The study aimed to identify the factors which contributed to problematic use, the effects of problematic use, and suggestions on how to help youth athletes overcome problematic use. Four focus groups sessions were conducted with a total of 21 Singaporean youth athletes (aged 12–18 years old) from four different sports. The data was analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The findings indicated various factors which contributed to problematic use, namely personal attributes, needs fulfilment, and external influences. Effects of problematic use included areas such as shrinkage of time, performance deficits, and undesirable behaviours. There were various suggestions on how to overcome problematic use, which included strengthening internal resources and tapping into sources of external help. Future research should seek to use the knowledge derived from this study to create interventions to help youth athletes deal with their problematic mobile phone use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Children and adolescents are among the most vulnerable to developing posttraumatic stress in the aftermath of a disaster. This study investigated posttraumatic stress among students attending surrounding primary and secondary schools following the 2014 Hazelwood mine fire in the Latrobe Valley region of Australia. Posttraumatic stress levels of students (n = 323) attending smoke-exposed schools (n = 20) were assessed 16–21 months after the event using the Children's Revised Impact of Events Scale (CRIES). The mean CRIES total score of students attending these schools was 17.22, suggesting an overall moderate level of posttraumatic stress associated with the mine fire. Across the sample, 22% of the students (n = 23) had a CRIES score of ≥30, indicative of posttraumatic stress at a level warranting clinical concern. Students attending schools located closer to the mine (Morwell Schools) experienced significantly greater levels of posttraumatic stress (CRIES M = 21.63) compared with students attending schools located further away (Non-Morwell Schools; CRIES M = 14.70). This difference appeared to have been primarily driven by higher scoring among Morwell students on the Arousal symptom domain of the CRIES. The mean CRIES score of primary school students (M = 23.18) was over double that of secondary school students (M = 10.30) regardless of the proximity of their school to the smoke event; however, this difference did not reach statistical significance. Associative memory deficits in aging are frequently characterized by false recognition of novel stimulus associations, particularly when stimuli are similar. Introducing distinctive stimuli, therefore, can help guide item differentiation in memory and can further our understanding of how age-related brain changes impact behavior. How older adults use different types of distinctive information to distinguish overlapping events in memory and to avoid false associative recognition is still unknown. To test this, we manipulated the distinctiveness of items from two stimulus categories, scenes and objects, across three conditions: (1) distinct scenes paired with similar objects, (2) similar scenes paired with distinct objects, and (3) similar scenes paired with similar objects. Young and older adults studied scene-object pairs and then made both remember/know judgments toward single items as well as associative memory judgments to old and novel scene-object pairs ("Were these paired together?"). Older adults showed intact single item recognition of scenes and objects, regardless of whether those objects and scenes were similar or distinct. In contrast, relative to younger adults, older adults showed elevated false recognition for scene-object pairs, even when the scenes were distinct. These age-related associative memory deficits, however, disappeared if the pair contained an object that was visually distinct. In line with neural evidence that hippocampal functioning and scene processing decline with age, these results suggest that older adults can rely on memory for distinct objects, but not for distinct scenes, to distinguish between memories with overlapping features. Consumers strongly prefer brands that resonate with their own self-concepts, life tasks, themes, and concerns; in response, brands increasingly seek to connect with multiple aspects of their target marketsʻ self-concepts. Considering these ongoing developments, current conceptualisations of self-congruity in marketing may be inadequate, in that they tend to feature a unidimensional construct, based primarily on personality. Therefore, the current article proposes and confirms the appropriateness of a multidimensional conceptualisation of the self-concept, adopted from psychology literature, that is comprised of personality, beliefs, interests, social roles, aspirations, and abilities. For managers, this article shows how expanding self-congruity dimensions beyond personality provides opportunities for evoking stronger perceptions of congruence among consumers. The discharge of harmful dyes in water bodies is a serious pollution problem, dangerous for the ecosystem's equilibrium and human health. In this sense, the aim of this work was to determine the influence of electrolytes (NaCl, KCl, CaCl2 and MgCl2) in the adsorption of Reactive Blue BF-5G dye, the most common dye used in industrial process for fabric colouring, using bovine bone char as the adsorbent. The bovine bone char was characterized by pH of point of zero charge (pHPZC), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffractometry (XDR). The characterization revealed a mesoporous structure (pore mean diameter of 94 Å and SBET ∼107 m2 g-1) with negative charge distribution at the surface (pHPZC = 3.8). The adsorption experiments revealed that the presence of KCl enhanced the material adsorption capacity (qmax = 195 mg g−1), that the Sips isotherm best fitted the experimental data (R2 > 0.9 except for KCl solution) and the adsorption process was mono- and multilayered. The kinetic adsorption experiments indicated that the inorganic electrolytes increased the initial adsorption velocity and the data was best modelled by the surface diffusional model (SDM), implying a resistance (aqueous > CaCl2 > NaCl > MgCl2 > KCl) to mass transfer at the surface of the pores which, in turn, prevented the dye diffusion to the interior of the adsorbent (qe = 71 mg g−1). Therefore, small quantities of KCl can be used to lower the mass transfer resistance and provide higher adsorption capacity with reduced time of operation, thus increasing the overall process efficiency. Photovoltaic (PV) systems are widely recognised as one of the most essential renewable energy sources for meeting future energy demands. The use of various multi-input DC–DC converters (MICs) to interface PV systems for output voltage regulation has been reported in the literature. PVs have inherent limitations, such as being extremely sensitive to changes in atmospheric conditions and human design/installation errors. Therefore, output voltage regulation suffers because of wide input voltage variations which have been ignored. In this regard, a novel MIC topology is proposed in this paper and it can operate under wide input voltage variation in buck, boost, and buck-boost modes of operation to achieve desired output voltage. The proposed topology is capable to integrate multiple energy sources and it offers an individual or simultaneous operation of the connected energy sources. Further, it also has additional features including high voltage gain, modularity, and control flexibility. The steady-state and thermal analysis have been presented, as well as a comparison with the state-of-the-art literature to prove the suitability of the proposed topology for PV application. Temporal information, including information about temporal order and duration, is a fundamental component of event sequence memory. While previous research has demonstrated that aging can have a detrimental effect on memory for temporal order, there has been limited insight into the effect of aging on memory for durations, particularly within the context of sequences. In the current study, neurologically healthy young and older participants were administered two temporal match-mismatch tasks: one in which they were instructed on each trial to compare the temporal order or duration information of stimulus sequences presented first in a study phase and then, after a short delay, in a test phase (event sequence task); and a second in which participants were required to compare single durations or sequences of durations across study and test phases of each trial (pinwheel task). Consistent with the literature, the older participants were significantly poorer compared to their younger counterparts at making temporal order match-mismatch judgments in the event sequence task. In addition to this, data from both tasks suggested that the older adults were also less accurate at match-mismatch judgments based on duration information, with tentative evidence from the pinwheel task to suggest that this age-related effect was most prominent when the duration information was presented within a sequence. We suggest that age-related changes to medial temporal and frontal lobe function may contribute to changes in memory for temporal information in older adults, given the importance of these regions to event sequence memory. Objective: Worsening student mental health, along with more complex mental illness presentation and increased access to campus mental health services, has led to a mental health “crisis” on campuses. One way to address student mental health needs may be through mental health programs which have been found to increase resiliency and help-seeking, and reduce stigma. Participants: The effectiveness of The Inquiring Mind (TIM), a mental health promotion and mental illness stigma reduction program, was examined in 810 students from 16 Canadian post-secondary institutions. Methods and Results: Using a meta-analytic approach, TIM improved resiliency and decreased stigmatizing attitudes from pre to post, with medium effect sizes (d>.50). Analyses with those that completed the follow-up (about one-third of the sample) showed that effects were mostly retained at three months. Other outcomes also point to the program’s effectiveness. Conclusion: TIM appears to be an effective program for post-secondary students. However, additional research, including randomized control trials, is needed to address study limitations. This study investigated the effect of Phyllanthus emblica leaves and branches mixture (PE) on growth performance, oxidative status and intestinal characteristics in broilers, as well as the in vitro antioxidant potential of PE extract (PEE). As the result of in vitro evaluation, the PEE had a total phenolic compound content of 95.5 ± 2.75 mg of Gallic acid equivalent/g dry weight (DW), and a total flavonoid content of 3.04 ± 0.06 mg of quercetin equivalent/g DW. The PEE exhibited significant antioxidant activity through various mechanisms, including chelation of ferrous iron, reducing power, scavenging 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals, inhibition of liposome peroxidation and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). A total of 320 Ross 308 broilers were randomly allocated into four groups: control, basal diet supplemented with 0.5%, 1%, 2% PE. Each group was fed for 35 d. The results showed that the group fed with 0.5% PE had significantly better weight gain, and improved feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the control group. Moreover, each PE group significantly reduced coliform and Clostridium perfringens in the ileum and caecum. Additionally, PE group with 0.5% concentration had significantly higher villus height in the jejunum compared to the other group. Furthermore, compared to the control group, each PE group had significantly lower levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and higher levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in the serum. In the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of chickens, each PE group showed significantly higher mRNA levels of antioxidant-regulated genes, including Nrf2, GST, GCLC, SOD1 and HO-1. In contrast, the expression levels of NOX1 and ROMO1 genes were significantly lower. In conclusion, the inclusion of 0.5% PE in the basal diet could have a positive impact on the growth performance of broilers by modulating intestinal characteristics and oxidative status. Phyllanthus emblica affects the growth performance, oxidative status and intestinal characteristics in broilers. The 0.5% PE group had significantly better weight gain and improved FCR. Despite the growing recognition of their harmful effects, sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) continue to be practiced in various societies. This study examines the experiences of 11 sexual minority individuals in Hong Kong who have undergone SOCE. The findings reveal the pervasive influence of deeply ingrained homonegativity values within religious, family, educational, and soiocultural contexts during LGBTQ+ individuals’ formative years. These prevailing stigmas compelled them to pursue SOCE through different methods. However, these methods have been proven ineffective and psychologically harmful, leading to increased distress and internalized homonegativity. The availability of knowledge and access to affirming LGBTQ+ values within religious, community, and sociocultural spheres played a crucial role in helping the respondents come to accept their sexual orientation and cease their attempts at SOCE. This study shed light on how the interplay of Chinese familial values and Christian doctrine in Hong Kong contributes to the promotion of homonegativity, consequently restricting the diverse expressions of sexuality. It is important to recognize that the notion of individuals actively “choosing” to undergo SOCE is misguided, as these decisions are often driven by social stigma and external pressures. Abstract Purpose Method Result Conclusion The assessment and diagnosis of apraxia of speech (AOS) have been well studied in the English context, yet there is limited understanding of the clinical practice in speakers of other languages, like Cantonese. This study aimed to obtain information about the clinical practice of assessment methods and diagnostic criteria used, and confidence in diagnosing, AOS in Cantonese speakers.An online survey constructed with Google Forms was completed by 27 speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in Hong Kong. The questionnaire comprised 12 questions covering (a) demographic information, (b) experience working with speakers with AOS, (c) confidence in making AOS diagnosis in Cantonese speakers, (d) assessment tasks or methods used for assessing AOS in Cantonese speakers, (e) clinical features used for diagnostic purposes, and (f) assessment tasks used to determine the presence of clinical features for diagnostic purposes.All respondents (100%) made AOS diagnoses based on the observed clinical features, while no respondents made diagnoses using only standardised tests or quantitative measures. Six clinical features were commonly used by most of the respondents: articulatory groping (100%), inconsistent articulatory errors (100%), length effects (85.2%), difficulty initiating speech (81.5%), automaticity effects (81.5%), and sound distortions (77.8%). More than half of the respondents collected connected speech samples (64%), and conducted diadochokinesis (64%) and repetition tasks (64%). The average confidence level of the respondents for making AOS diagnoses was fair (3.63/5).The SLPs in Hong Kong make AOS diagnoses based on the observed clinical features that have been reported in the English literature. Although some of the clinical features have been updated as non-discriminatory for AOS, they are still being used for AOS diagnosis in Cantonese speakers. Tendencies were observed with respect to the assessment tasks selected. This study investigated whether media articles from a postsecondary institution could influence students' stigma toward suicide after a student dies by suicide. Undergraduate participants (N = 425) read a fictitious scenario about a student suicide and were randomly assigned to a control article (no mention of the suicide) or one of three intervention articles that acknowledged the suicide and included a discussion with a psychologist, a friend of the decedent, or a suicide survivor. The stigma toward suicide survivors, particularly stereotypes, was significantly less after the three intervention articles compared to the control. No differences were found between the intervention articles or regarding the stigma toward suicide decedents. Reduced stigma toward survivors indicates that acknowledging a suicide, when possible, should be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the factor structure and measurement invariance of the competence, confidence, connection, character, and caring (Five Cs) model using the Positive Youth Development (PYD) survey's short (34 items) and very short versions (17 items). We also tested its criterion-related validity with life satisfaction, flourishing, transcendence, perceived societal and school statuses, and COVID-19 anxiety. In the Philippines, 1,116 senior high school students completed this survey (age: M = 17.61 years; SD = 0.91). The results support the bi-factor model for both formats, which showed varying levels of measurement invariance across gender, SES, and school type. Controlling for the general PYD construct, character and caring (i.e., socio-emotional Cs) showed negative latent factor correlations with competence and confidence (i.e., efficacy-related Cs). Almost all PYD dimensions exhibited expected associations with the criterion-related measures. As the very short version showed low reliability for competence and character, our results support using the 34-item short scale to measure the general and individual dimensions of adolescent thriving. In daily life, failure to perceive emotional expressions can result in maladjusted behaviour. For cochlear implant users, perceiving emotional cues in sounds remains challenging, and the factors explaining the variability in patients' sensitivity to emotions are currently poorly understood. Understanding how these factors relate to auditory proficiency is a major challenge of cochlear implant research and is critical in addressing patients' limitations. To fill this gap, we evaluated different auditory perception aspects in implant users (pitch discrimination, music processing and speech intelligibility) and correlated them to their performance in an emotion recognition task. Eighty-four adults (18–76 years old) participated in our investigation; 42 cochlear implant users and 42 controls. Cochlear implant users performed worse than their controls on all tasks, and emotion perception abilities were correlated to their age and their clinical outcome as measured in the speech intelligibility task. As previously observed, emotion perception abilities declined with age (here by about 2–3% in a decade). Interestingly, even when emotional stimuli were musical, CI users' skills relied more on processes underlying speech intelligibility. Previous studies on the collapse performance of steel frames mainly focused on a single column loss. Even though the multi-column loss has been increasingly studied recently, it is generally based on the numerical analysis and relevant analytical study is rare. Moreover, the behavior of the frame after the multi-column loss should be more sensitive to its boundary condition due to a greater affected zone, compared with the single-column loss. However, this boundary condition effect has not been given enough attention in existing studies. To fill in these research gaps, this paper investigates the collapse resistance of the steel frame in two-interior-column-removal scenarios. To quantify the boundary condition effects, four column-removal scenarios, namely, two general-interior columns (GG), one general-interior column and one edge-interior column (GE), two edge-interior columns (EE), and one edge-interior column and one corner-interior column (EC) are studied. It is found that in the scenarios of GG and GE, the resistance-displacement relationship of the frame shows a tri-linear characteristic. In the scenarios of EE and EC, however, a bi-linear characteristic is exhibited. Compared with the GG scenario, the ultimate bearing capacities of the frame in the GE, EE and EC scenarios decrease by about 12%–20%, 33%–43% and 39%–52%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hemicellulose and lignin were progressively removed from hemp fiber by hydrolysis. SEM, FTIR, XRD analysis and tensile properties evaluation on technical fibers were carried out to understand the structural and mechanical properties of hemp fibers. Significant influence of hemicellulose and lignin content on tensile properties was verified by ANOVA. The fiber tensile strength and initial modulus were decreased with the extensive removal of hemicellulose, along with a constant increasing of elongation at rupture. Torsion and expansion were observed in hemp fibers. It was suggested that the internal structure destruction and reorganization in the ultimate fiber cells was the main reason for the variation of mechanical properties when hemicellulose was gradually dissolved. On the other hand, fiber individualization was achieved by lignin removal and contributed to the elevation of fiber tensile properties. The elongation at break of the hemp fibers decreased slightly with the removal of lignin. NaClO2 solution treatment affected the fiber cells slightly, but effectively changed the properties of the middle lamella jointing between the ultimate fiber cells. The mechanical properties of the hemp fiber were mainly decided by the shearing between single fibers caused by the plastic-like deformation of the middle lamella. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the rapid growth of perishable food e-commerce businesses, there is a definite need for logistics services providers to manage parcel shipments with multi-temperature requirements. E-commerce characteristics, including time-critical delivery, fragmented orders, and high product variety, should be further considered to extend the ontology of multi-temperature joint distribution. However, traditional delivery route planning is insufficient because it merely minimises the cost of travelling between customer locations. Factors related to food quality and arrival time windows should also be considered. In addition, handling dynamic incident management, such as violations of handling requirements during delivery, is lacking. This leads to the likelihood of food deteriorating before it reaches the consumers, thereby impacting customer satisfaction. This paper proposes an Internet of Things–based multi-temperature delivery planning system (IoT-MTDPS), embedding a two-phase multi-objective genetic algorithm optimiser (2PMGAO). The formulation of delivery routing mainly considers product-dependent multi-temperature characteristics, service level, transportation cost, and number of trucks. Once there are unexpected incidents which are detected by Internet of Things technologies, 2PMGAO can optimise the membership functions of fuzzy logic for re-routing the e-commerce delivery plan. The past decade has seen an increasing number of diversity initiatives undertaken by brands in an attempt to connect with consumers. While audiences view some initiatives positively, some evoke controversy or backlash, indicating that they have not been successful. Without clear research-based directions for designing diversity initiatives though, marketers continue to struggle. Therefore, this article proposes a framework of how diversity initiatives might achieve success through audience connectedness. The framework includes three characteristics of such initiatives: the marketer's approach to diversity, the audiences' perception of diversity, and the level of belief congruence. When all three factors converge, diversity initiatives can evoke a sense of audience connectedness. Critical consciousness has received growing attention in developmental science, but most of the work has been conducted in Western liberal democracies. A critical examination is needed to determine whether critical consciousness can be appropriately measured in less democratic societies, where opportunity structures are different from those in Western liberal democracies. To establish the psychopolitical validity of a measure of critical reflection in less democratic societies, this study developed the Critical Reflection Scale (CRS) based on a sample of 3,015 youths in China. The results support a two-factor model of critical reflection, including (1) recognition of social inequity and (2) awareness of everyday oppression. The findings reveal varying levels of critical reflection across age, gender, and sexual orientation. Two items of the CRS function differently between young women and men. Research on dementia literacy in Chinese societies is still emerging, and this is especially the case among racially minoritized groups. The present study explored the knowledge, causal beliefs, and help-seeking behaviors of South Asian migrants in Hong Kong about dementia. It also investigated existing community barriers related to dementia knowledge and help-seeking. We conducted a qualitative study from a purposive sample of 38 older people and family caregivers from India, Pakistan, and Nepal who lived in Hong Kong. Focus groups and individual in-depth interviews were used to gather information, while thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data. Five main themes were identified: normalization with stigmatization of dementia; spiritual and psychosocial attributions of dementia; familial responsibility despite potential caregiving burden; uncertainties versus openness to professional care; and barriers and opportunities in dementia literacy. Ethnic minorities recognized dementia as a disease of normal aging or a mental disorder. They also perceived spiritual and psychosocial factors as their main causes. While participants recognized the potential burden of dementia caregiving, families were their first point of help-seeking, as many of them expressed contrasting feelings of confidence or doubt toward professional services. Utilization of health education strategies, together with collaboration with community leaders, could address the barriers to dementia literacy. This is the first study to explore how ethnic minorities in Asia perceive dementia and its related help-seeking behaviors in their communities. South Asian migrants in Hong Kong have a limited understanding of dementia and may experience delays in obtaining relevant community services. While culture influenced their knowledge, health education may address their misperceptions and help-seeking behaviors toward dementia. The study provided an exploratory investigation into problematic mobile phone use among youth athletes. The study aimed to identify the factors contributing to problematic use and effects of problematic use among youth athletes. 369 Singaporean youth athletes, aged between 12 and 19 years old, participated in the study. A structural topic modelling approach using the R package stm was used to analyse the data. The process generated a list of topics for each of the open-ended survey questions. Subsequent interpretation was done to label the topics and group them into higher thematic categories. The prevalence of problematic mobile phone use in the sampled population was 40.65%. The analysis produced 38 topics for factors and 36 topics for effects. For factors, the higher thematic categories were habitual/compulsive use, accessibility/utility, alleviation of boredom/moods, lack of control, coping with school/work, entertainment, and communication. For effects, the higher thematic categories were time wastage/insufficient time, distraction/loss of focus, sleep/tiredness, sport-related areas, and addiction. The study provided novel insight into issues surrounding problematic mobile phone use among youth athletes. We tested whether 100 g/day of dried fruit (vs. no supplemental fruit control) for 6 months alters 24-hr urinary net acid excretion (NAE), bone resorption, weight, body composition, muscle performance, and diet quality. We explored consistency of self-selected dietary composition and potential renal acid load (PRAL). This randomized, single-blind, 2-armed study included 83 normal- and over-weight men and postmenopausal women (age ≥50 years) on self-reported low fruit diets. Endpoints included group differences in NAE (primary), 24-hr urinary N-telopeptide (NTX), weight, body composition, muscle performance, and diet quality. At baseline, mean (±SD) age was 69 ± 8 years; 86% were Caucasian; body mass index was 24.5 ± 2.8 kg/m2; 46% female, and NAE was 32.4 ± 23.1 mmol with no significant baseline group differences. No significant group differences were noted in NAE (primary), NTX, weight, body composition, muscle performance or diet quality at 6 months. In the cohort as a whole, 6-month change in NAE was positively associated with change in NTX, but no significant associations were noted in other outcomes. PRAL on the day of the urine collection was positively associated with NAE. Comparison of two consecutive baseline 24-hr diet recalls revealed wide intra-individual variability in PRAL in self-selected diets in our participants. In this field study of older adults consuming self-selected diets, making one change to the diet by adding 100 g/day of dried fruit (equivalent to 4 servings per day) had no significant impact on NAE when compared to a no supplemental fruit control. This null finding may be attributable to the high day-to-day variability in consumption of foods affecting NAE. Two experiments were conducted to determine the apparent metabolisable energy (AME) and standardised amino acid digestibility coefficients (SIDC) of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) for broiler chickens. 2. The BSFL contained, on a g/kg dry matter basis: crude protein, 486; crude fat, 320; ash, 58.5; neutral detergent fibre, 181; calcium, 6.8 and phosphorus, 9.1. 3. In Experiment 1, an AME assay was performed wherein broilers were fed two experimental diets (a maize-soy basal diet and a test diet containing 250 g/kg BSFL) for 4 d from d 18 posthatch. The AME of BSFL was calculated based on the difference between the AME values of basal and test diets. The AME and nitrogen-corrected AME were determined to be 19.1and 18.0 MJ/kg of dry matter, respectively. 4. In Experiment 2, the ileal amino acid (AA) digestibility of BSFL was determined using 22-d-old broilers by the direct method and the digesta was collected on d 25. The ratios between the AA and titanium in the diet and digesta were used to calculate the apparent digestibility and then standardised using previously published endogenous losses to estimate the SIDC of AA. The SIDC of Lys, Met, Thr, Val and average SIDC of AA in our BSFL sample were 0.85, 0.90, 0.91, 0.87 and 0.84, respectively. 5. Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a paediatric motor speech disorder. We investigated the lexical tone perception and production abilities of children with CAS and the relationships between the two. Three children with CAS, aged between 3;7 and 5;8, were given the Cantonese Tone Identification Test (CANTIT) and the Hong Kong Cantonese Articulation Test (HKCAT) for assessment of tone perception and production, respectively. Accuracy and error patterns were investigated based on their performance on the two tests. Correlation analysis was performed on children's perception and production scores. Two children scored at the lowest rank on the CANTIT, while one child obtained a Z score of 0. All children scored three standard deviations below the mean on the HKCAT. No statistical differences were found among the six tones with respect to perception accuracy, H(5) = 3.731, p = 0.589. Error analysis showed that children with CAS demonstrated more confusion on perceiving tones compared with TD peers. There were no main effects for task (F(1,2) = 0.040, p = 0.859) or tone (F(5,10 = 0.997, p = 0.467); nor were there task or tone interaction effects on perception versus production accuracy (F(5,10) = 1.772, p = 0.206). Tone perception and production accuracy were not significantly correlated (r2 = 0.181, p = 0.078). Tone perception deficits were evident in two out of three children with CAS, while all children had lexical tone production difficulties. Monosexism has been increasingly recognized as a minority stressor uniquely experienced by plurisexual individuals. The present study investigated the effects of monosexist discrimination on mental health and examined the moderating role of gender and sexual identity integration (i.e., negation, authenticity, and disclosure). In a sample of 314 bisexual and pansexual individuals in Hong Kong (73.9% women and 26.1% men), the results showed that monosexist discrimination was associated with higher levels of depression and anxiety symptoms, above and beyond heterosexist discrimination. The association between monosexist discrimination and depression symptoms was stronger among bisexual and pansexual men than women, despite there being no gender differences in vulnerability to monosexist discrimination. Moreover, sexual identity negation, authenticity, and disclosure moderated the associations of monosexist discrimination with depression and anxiety symptoms, such that the associations were not significant among those with more positive integration of sexual identity (i.e., lower levels of sexual identity negation as well as higher levels of sexual identity authenticity and disclosure). This study provides insight into the deleterious impact of monosexism and the protective role of sexual identity integration. Ocular prostheses are liable to host microbial adhesion, which can favor conjunctival inflammation. Knowing the microbiota of the ocular prosthesis and anophthalmic socket is important for predicting infection-related pathogens. This study evaluated the microbiota of the prostheses and anophthalmic sockets of six individuals by 16S rRNA sequencing. The microbial abundance and diversity were analyzed using the Operational Taxonomic Units at the genus level. Forty-seven phyla, capturing 1,258 named genera, were recorded in the sample set. In both sites, the most frequent genera were Fusobacterium, Staphylococcus, Prevotella, and Streptococcus. The microbial abundance was higher for the anophthalmic socket than for the prosthesis. Alpha diversity showed no significant differences in bacterial richness or diversity between sites. Although the microbial abundance in the anophthalmic socket was higher, both sites had similar microbiota with high diversity and low dominance among the genera. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Efforts were made to examine the effect of textile roughness for the reduction of aerodynamic drag experienced on a cyclist model. First of all, flow visualization experiments were conducted in a water channel with a 1/5 scale cyclist model to identify the flow separation lines on the contoured surface. Subsequently, based on the information learned, the idea of delaying flow separation on the model surface was implemented by means of sport suits. Seven sport suits featuring different textile materials and local roughness patterns were tested on a full-scale cyclist model in wind tunnel experiments, in addition to a reference case without a sport suit. From the CD data deduced, we identified a critical condition in most of the cases studied, featuring a least drag coefficient occurred at a Reynolds number within the flow speed range studied. For the best case found, the drag coefficient is amounted 7.5% less than that of the reference case at the same Reynolds number. Furthermore, the Cp and Cprms values reduced from the pressure measurements on the cyclist model with the sport suits unveil a trend that the reduction of drag actually infers the retreat of the local flow separation lines toward the rear side of the body accompanied with less severe the flow unsteadiness. Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films have potential applications in many aspects due to unique electrically switching properties, and thus the films with excellent comprehensive properties are highly demanded at present. In this study, aromatic polyurethane acrylate (PUA) was used as polymer-matrix, and effect of diluents [lauryl methacrylate (LMA) and isobornyl acrylate (IBOA)] content on the electrical-optical properties of PDLC films was investigated. The results indicate that increase of PUA/LMA or decrease of LMA/IBOA weight ratio increases threshold and saturation voltages (Vth and Vsat), decreases on- and off-state transmittances (Ton and Toff) and increases contrast ratio. Under optimised PUA/LMA weight ratio of 31/19 or PUA/LMA/IBOA weight ratio of 31/15/4, the Vth and Vsat of the films first increase and then decrease with increasing Ag nanowires (NWs) content, and better overall properties are achieved at 0.05 or 0.075 wt.% Ag NWs, respectively. In order to explore essential reasons for the influence of diluents and Ag NWs on the properties of PDLC films, the relationships between film properties (Vth or Vsat, Ton, Toff, and response time) and liquid crystal (LC) droplets size were analysed emphatically, and the changes of system viscosity and anchoring force between polymer-matrix and LC droplets were also discussed. Landslides are destructive and recurrent natural disasters on steep slopes and represent a risk to lives and properties. Knowledge of relict landslides' location is vital to understand their mechanisms, update inventory maps and improve risk assessment. However, relict landslide mapping is complex in tropical regions covered with rainforest vegetation. A new CNN framework is proposed for semi-automatic detection of relict landslides, which uses a dataset generated by a k-means clustering algorithm and has a pre-training step. The weights computed in the pre-training are used to fine-tune the CNN training process. A comparison between the proposed and the standard framework is performed using CBERS-04A WPM images. Three CNNs for semantic segmentation are used (Unet, FPN and Linknet) with two augmented datasets. A total of 42 combinations of CNNs are tested. Values of precision and recall were very similar between the combinations tested. Recall was higher than 75% for every combination, but precision values were usually smaller than 20%. False positives (FP) samples were addressed as the cause for these low precision values. Predictions of the proposed framework were more accurate and correctly detected more landslides. This work demonstrates that there are limitations for detecting relict landslides in areas covered with rainforest, mainly related to similarities between the spectral response of pastures and deforested areas with Gleichenella sp. ferns, commonly used as an indicator of landslide scars. Exoskeleton use by people with complete spinal cord injury (SCI) in daily life is challenging. To optimize daily exoskeleton use, a better understanding of the purpose of use and the accompanying improvements are needed. The perspective of experienced exoskeleton users could guide design improvements. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were held with 13 people with SCI with exoskeleton experience. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed, and analysed thematically. Participants expressed three future purposes of exoskeleton use: for daily activities (e.g., stair climbing), exercise (e.g., staying healthy), and social interaction (e.g., standing at parties). Exoskeleton use during daily activities was the ultimate goal. Therefore, the future exoskeleton should be: easy to use, small and lightweight, tailor made, safe, comfortable, less distinctive, durable, and affordable. Improving the ease of use was relevant for all purposes, for all participants. The other suggestions for improvement varied depending on the purpose of use and the participant. Increasingly more advanced improvements are needed to transition from an exercise purpose to social interaction, and ultimately use during daily activities. In the current study, detailed suggestions for improvements have been made. Only when multiple of these suggestions are adjusted, can the exoskeleton be used to its full potential. The use of an exoskeleton by people with a complete spinal cord injury in daily life is still in its infancy. To optimize daily exoskeleton use, a better understanding of the purpose of use and exoskeleton improvements is needed. More advanced improvements to future exoskeletons are needed to make a transition from use as an exercise device to use during social interaction and daily activities. Intermittent bright light during the night has shown to be able to generate circadian phase-shifting effects, suppress melatonin and induce alertness, but little attention has been devoted to the effects of diurnal intermittent bright light. Following a night of sleep restriction, forty participants were exposed in a counterbalanced within-subject design to an intermittent (100 lux – 1000 lux), a continuous dim (100 lux) and a continuous bright light condition (1000 lux) each lasting 90 min. Repeated assessments of self-reported sleepiness, cognitive performance and physiological arousal as well as subjective visual comfort were taken during each light condition. Results showed that alertness-related parameters were not significantly affected by the light conditions: neither the intermittent nor the bright condition improved alertness compared to the dim condition. Visual comfort was highest in the dim condition, followed by the intermittent and bright conditions respectively, even though the visualizations showed marked decreases in visual comfort during the bright light phases in the intermittent condition. Pedagogical reforms in sub-Saharan Africa have often been unsuccessful, arguably because they fail to account for the social and cultural context of teachers' choices. Two studies in rural Tanzania examined the pedagogical decisions of teachers taking part in a programme of teacher professional development. Teachers reflected on their own decisions to conduct teaching activities, which were observed by the research team, and on the decisions taken by teachers in vignettes. Results suggested that pedagogical decisions were influenced by the social goals of togetherness, cooperation, and fairness. Pedagogical choices were also influenced by the need to avoid embarrassing students and to address conformity among student responses and students' lack of confidence in addressing teachers. The findings broadly support the hypothesis that Tanzanian teachers pursue implicit social goals in their classroom, some of which are associated with the culture of historically agricultural societies. Teachers may be resistant to new pedagogies which do not support these social goals. Rather than seeing cultural values as 'barriers', we argue that teacher professional development programmes, particularly for early years education, should design teaching activities which are consistent with the culturally shaped social goals of teachers while remaining true to the learning goals of those activities. Endophthalmitis is an ophthalmological emergency requiring timely and appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Microbiological methods of microscopy (Gram's staining) and culture are the current gold standard for organism identification. However, a significant proportion of endophthalmitis remains culture-negative—perhaps the inflammation is non-infectious in origin, results from a novel organism are unidentifiable or because the causative organism is non-culturable often due to pre-treatment with antibiotics. This review outlines the microbiological profile of endophthalmitis, current clinically used methods for organism identification, and the newer molecular techniques of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology as diagnostic tools for endophthalmitis. They offer the potential to improve organism identification rates and clinical outcomes in infectious diseases, representing an exciting future direction for organism identification in endophthalmitis. Based on the largest ophthalmic hospital in Australia, we highlight the key practical challenges faced by Australian diagnostic laboratories for their use in a clinical setting. The effect of overburden stress on the rock mass deformation modulus is a known issue. However, the effect of overburden stress has been studied less with empirical methods due to the lack of appropriate data. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the effect of overburden stress on rock mass deformation modulus using artificial neural network (ANN). Four ANN models have been developed in accordance with the purpose of the study. Two of these models do not contain the overburden stress parameter, but the other two models contain the overburden stress parameter. The prediction performance of the models containing the overburden stress parameter was obtained drastically higher than the others. In other words, the value account for (VAF) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) indices of the model having the inputs of rock mass rating (RMR) and elasticity modulus of intact rock (Ei) are 73.3% and 462, respectively, while those of the model having the inputs of RMR, Ei and overburden stress are 90% and 265. The other models developed in the present study yielded similar results. Consequently, with the ANN models developed in this study, the effect of overburden stress on Em is revealed, clearly. Due to strict requirements for high-tech processes, yield is an essential performance measure of quality output and affects production economics significantly. Yield is a performance index that significantly influences the optimal decision on profit and production quantity. For instance, in micro light-emitting diodes (MicroLED) manufacturing, the yield of surface mounting highly affects the production cost. To guarantee the production decision is reliable, accurately evaluating yields is crucial. However, the existing yield evaluation method for asymmetric processes with a very low fraction of defective by process capability index is conservative and may mislead the decisions. In this paper, a revised unbiased estimator is investigated and a weighted parametric bootstrap method for accurate production decision making is provided. With extensive comparisons, the proposed method outperforms the existing analytical method and considerably improves the precision of yield evaluation. We also provided managerial insights for a profit with various yield measure methods. In conventional finite element–Lagrangian methods, the dynamics model of a flexible robot is usually formulated based on a critical assumption that the kinetic energy of an element is approximately calculated with an integral of mass point energy. Since the energy integral is implicit, the formulation of the dynamics model is also very complex and implicit. Hence, this article develops a new mathematical approach for the dynamic modeling of a general flexible/rigid robot. The proposed method is more comprehensive and efficient in comparison with the previous ones because it no longer requires the calculation of the symbolic integrals and the implicit expressions of the elemental and global mass matrices. Besides, the proposed approach is applicable for both the flexible robots and the hybrid flexible/rigid robots. Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at risk of kidney dysfunction. Recently, the shrunken pore syndrome (SPS) has been described, which is characterized by selectively impaired filtration of larger molecules like cystatin C, while filtration of smaller molecules like creatinine is unaltered. It has been associated with increased mortality, even in the presence of a normal estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of SPS in CCS exposed to potentially nephrotoxic therapy. In the Dutch Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (DCCSS)-LATER 2 Renal study, a nationwide cross-sectional cohort study, 1024 CCS ≥5 years after diagnosis, aged ≥18 years at study, treated between 1963-2001 with nephrectomy, abdominal radiotherapy, total body irradiation, cisplatin, carboplatin, ifosfamide, high-dose cyclophosphamide or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation participated, and 500 age- and sex-matched controls form Lifelines. SPS was defined as an eGFRcys/eGFRcr ratio <0.6 in the absence of non-GFR determinants of cystatin C and creatinine metabolism (i.e. hyperthyroidism, corticosteroids, underweight). Three pairs of eGFR-equations were used; CKD-EPIcys/CKD-EPIcr, CAPA/LMR, and FAScys/FASage. Median age was 32 years. Although an eGFRcys/eGFRcr ratio <0.6 was more common in CCS (1.0%) than controls (0%) based on the CKD-EPI equations, most cases were explained by non-GFR determinants. The prevalence of SPS in CCS was 0.3% (CKD-EPI equations), 0.2% (CAPA/LMR) and 0.1% (FAS equations), and not increased compared to controls. CCS treated with nephrotoxic therapy are not at increased risk for SPS compared to controls. Yet, non-GFR determinants are more common and should be taken into account when estimating GFR. Dealing with soldier enhancement can be challenging for military physicians. As research on the ethics of soldier enhancement is mostly theoretical, this study aims to gain insights into the actual moral issues military physicians encounter, or expect to encounter. To that end, we carried out a qualitative study involving six focus groups of Dutch military physicians (n = 28) in operational roles. The participants voiced their concerns about moral issues concerning soldier enhancement. Based on the group discussions, and using inductive thematic analysis, we ascertained three major themes: (1) Doing no harm in soldier enhancement: uncertainty and high stakes; (2) Dependency relationships and conflicting moral responsibilities; and (3) The risk of ethical slippery slopes. Our findings illustrate that dealing with these moral responsibilities requires considerable skill and acuity to weigh up for all the situated complexities and dependency relationships that go beyond abstract rules or moral principles. A care-ethical approach that acknowledges the contextual and relational aspects of moral complexities along with peer consultation and joint reflective dialogue on moral issues can help military physicians deal with soldier enhancement responsibly. The importance of nanotechnology in medical applications especially with biomedical sensing devices is undoubted. Several medical diagnostics have been developed by taking the advantage of nanomaterials, especially with electrical biosensors. Biosensors have been predominantly used for the quantification of different clinical biomarkers toward detection, screening, and follow-up the treatment. At present, ovarian cancer is one of the severe complications that cannot be identified until it becomes most dangerous as the advanced stage. Based on the American Cancer Society, 20% of cases involved in the detection of ovarian cancer are diagnosed at an early stage and 80% diagnosed at the later stages. The patient just has a common digestive problem and stomach ache as early symptoms and people used to ignore these symptoms. Micro ribonucleic acid (miRNA) is classified as small non-coding RNAs, their expressions change due to the association of cancer development and progression. This article reviews and discusses on the currently available strategies for the early detection of ovarian cancers using miRNA as a biomarker associated with electrical biosensors. Reproductive strategies are one of the more fascinating aspects of Anuran biology and are likely affected by species habitat use and availability of reproductive sites. The Cerrado endemic Pithecopus oreades is a habitat specialist that reproduces in seasonal high-altitude rocky streams in Central Brazil. Herein, we describe its reproductive behavior based on observations made during two consecutive reproductive seasons in a high-altitude stream located in an open field area in Central Brazil. The reproductive activity of P. oreades occurs during the rainy season, from the very first rains, and lasts about 3 months. The species is nocturnal, showing a vocalization peak between 20:00 h and 21:00 h. Its vocalization activity was related to total precipitation. The nests, composed by only one folded leaf, are placed on shrubs along streams. The nests, which hang over the stream pools, contain approximately 30 eggs that last about 13 days of incubation, producing about 25 tadpoles per spawning. Males are territorial, remaining in the same places for more than 60 days, defending them through vocalizations and eventual physical combats. The "movement-voting nexus" thesis highlights the impact of transformative social movements on shifting voting behaviour and electoral outcomes. However, existing studies have overwhelmingly focused on the context of democracies. This study goes beyond the existing literature by testing the applicability of "movement-voting nexus' in the context of hybrid regimes, using the voter mobilization in the Hong Kong's Anti-Extradition Bill Movement as a case study. The findings of this study are two-fold: The quantitative findings from a territory-wide telephone survey validated the thesis of "movement-voting nexus' in Hong Kong's hybrid regime, statistically establishing the significance of "movement support" as a novel predictor of voting behaviour (vis-à-vis other predictors such as political partisanship) in times of transformative social movement, as in the case of democracies; the qualitative findings from extended interviews of survey respondents revealed that the "movement-voting nexus" was operating in the shadows of authoritarian electoral influence in the territory, reflecting the nuanced features of Hong Kong's hybrid regime.
