It is frequently asserted that gastronomic services (or the hospitality sector) in Warsaw during the Occupation was, paradoxically, larger than before 1st September 1939. The evidence for this assertion, by known and highly respected authors, is argued here to be internally inconsistent even though their conclusions are largely the same. This paper comes to contrary conclusions, namely, that the scale of gastronomic services was smaller than before the war, though it was still surprisingly large, given the terrible conditions existing in the city. (Obviously, in either case, the evidence one draws upon can often be circumstantial and partial). For more than a decade, the importance of urban social movements has been systematically increasing in the Polish public sphere. However, available theories of social movements cannot account for the variety of forms of urban mobilization or for the ideological differences between organizations. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the relevance of Pierre Bourdieu's theory of social class for research on urban movements. Using the concepts of "capital" and "habitus," the paper explores the social vision and process of the emergence of two activist organizations in Warsaw, Poland. The study is based on qualitative research conducted from 2016 to 2019, which included an analysis of secondary resources and individual in-depth interviews with members from each organization. Bourdieu's theory of social class facilitates consideration of different aspects of the functioning of urban social movements, including the role of resources and competences, ideological divisions, and chances of success. The theory also provides an explanation for the importance of class within urban social movements. The article shows that, even though the demands of social movements appear to be values-led, in fact, they are based on the class interests of their members. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we use administrative tabulations from occupation-based income tax (class tax) to estimate income inequality in the Duchy of Warsaw. We start off by estimating income inequality in the Department of Kalisz, and then use the decomposability of the Theil index to estimate national income inequality based on a sample of Theil indices corresponding to different settlement types. According to our results, income inequality in the Duchy was at a moderate level, although in the biggest cities it was relatively high. The following paper is devoted to research on the types of forms of skyscrapers built in Warsaw from 1989 to 2022. The research focuses on defining the architectural typology of such forms as elements of the image of the city. The research was carried out in the following stages: defining the character of international examples of skyscrapers, research on types of forms of high-rise buildings realized in Warsaw and their formal classification, determination of typological features of twenty-four high-rise buildings under study, and their changes over time. The characteristic elements of the image of the city and urban composition related to the examined buildings were determined. As a result of the research, it was determined that the most common types of forms found in the study group were free forms—41.6%, polygonal forms—25%, and obelisk forms—20.8%. In individual cases, there are tapered, aerodynamic, and regional forms. The research showed a trend in the latest projects, dating back to the last five years, consisting of an increase in the number of buildings constructed, an increase their scale, a lowering of their slenderness, and a tendency to implement polygonal forms more often than free forms. High-rise buildings are landmarks in the urban composition and the image of Warsaw. Most often, they designate paths and nodes with which they are associated. The types of forms of high-rise buildings in Warsaw vary; there is no uniform type of form of high-rise building implemented in the period. Relations between metropolitan core cities and regional and sub-regional centres are part of a broader discussion on the importance of metropolitan areas for the development of regions. These relations are dealt with in this paper in the context of the growth pole theory. The paper focuses on the migration process in relation to enterprises. By moving their businesses, companies contribute to backwash and spread effects. Since company migrations between municipalities occur in both directions, the question remains open as to which migration direction dominates – whether from sub-regional centres to core cities or vice versa. This paper attempts to verify the hypothesis that regional and sub-regional centres in the Mazowieckie voivodship suffer the largest loss of enterprises due to migration to the core city of Warsaw. The results obtained were varied and the hypothesis was confirmed, especially in the case of three cities: Siedlce, Radom and Płock; and partly in the case of Ciechanów. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper employs critical discourse analysis to examine how Warsaw citizens (residents) perceived and organized the narratives of their participation in the governance of urban regeneration between 2004 and 2016 and how this evolved over that period. The study reveals citizens' discursive practices, such as the construction of positive and negative identities of the relevant social actors, the binary opposition between 'us and them', the development of new interpretations of urban regeneration, and f nally, the gradual elaboration of a model of empowered citizenship. Drawing on the concept of democratic urban regeneration policymaking, the research suggests that in the case of Warsaw, one can speak of a shift from a citizen discourse of rebellious participation in non-deliberative governance towards one of more consensual and empowering participation in more deliberative governance. Starting with Warsaw themes in the works of Pablopavo (Paweł Sołtys) - which have dominated previous research papers - the article signalizes their role in describing not only the rapidly changing city itself, but also its inhabitant's sense of inadequacy. Most of all, the analysis of the songs from different albums, from Telehon (2009) to Mozaika (2022), and from different musical projects (Pablopavo solo, the band Pablopavo i Ludziki, Pablopavo recording with Naprawdę Duży Zespół, with Praczas or with Praczas and Anna Iwanek) deals with motifs not discussed before, e.g. the vision of home, that can be a shield against the evil world, but can have the dark side or be used as a way to show the duality of the human mind. The metaphors created by Pablopavo are also interpreted in the article: the conceptual metaphors, as the versions of the structural metaphor LIFE IS A JOURNEY (a turn, an elevator, a railway station, a map), the orientational metaphors (mixing the dimensions) and the metaphors that blend space and time. The reflections profiled this way reveal the potential of these topics and figures in straightening out the mind and the memories, as well as in identifying the human position in space - the space understood more in terms of existence as space. The smart city concept, which is a consequence of the doctrine of sustainable development and technological change, has gained popularity in the international arena over the last decade. A discussion of the world literature indicates the need for intensive efforts, both in the areas of science and business practice, to implement, monitor and develop the smart city concept. The aim of the paper is to explain the specificity of the smart city concept on the basis of a systematic literature review and to identify the process of Warsaw’s adaptation to the smart city concept. The publication uses the methodology based on a systematic review of literature pertaining to the development of the smart city concept and functioning of smart city models. The analysis, which uses case study elements, has been carried out on the basis of available reports, rankings and official documents of the city of Warsaw. As a result, city characteristics indicating the level of development of Warsaw as a smart city have been presented. The analysis explains the mechanisms of implementing smart undertakings in Warsaw, providing at the same time the basis for indicating the city’s resilience model as an adaptive model adequate for the city. The authors’ considerations, focused on the development of the smart city concept, have resulted in a proposal of a smart city model. They also reveal a research perspective focused on Polish cities. In recent years, the issues of integration - related on the one hand to people referred to as foreigners, immigrants, newcomers, etc. - and on the other hand to host societies - have been gaining importance in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, including Poland. Before the political and socio-economic transformation at the turn of the 1980s and the 1990s, it was a country relatively closed to international migration. Only in the early 1990s did it open up to migration flows. That was also the time when the state's policy in this area had been gradually emerging. The preparations for EU membership enforced the process of developing a national migration policy. Poland's accession to the EU in 2004 and to the Schengen zone in 2007 saw its full involvement in EU migration governance in terms of internal and external policies, and thus the further Europeanisation of national law, public policy, and practices in the field of migration management. Recent years have seen a change in Poland's migration status, which has now become an emigration-immigration state, and the near future may bring about its transition into a new immigration state, especially in connection with the influx of large numbers of forced migrants from Ukraine since the end of February 2022. At the time of writing, that is mid-2022, Poland does not have a formalised integration policy at the central level. National law provides integration measures only for beneficiaries of international protection (persons with refugee status and subsidiary protection), which concerns a very small group of foreigners. However, the last two decades have seen increased involvement at the local government level (especially in cities) in integration. This is a process taking place in local communities with the support of other actors such as NGOs, informal associations, or universities. One such example is Warsaw, the capital of Poland, where the largest number of migrants, both voluntary and forced, live. This paper aims to explore the selected practices undertaken by some of Warsaw's municipal institutions and offices, which can be treated as an important part of the local integration policy and which could be a role model for other cities less experienced in immigrant integration. The following paper is devoted to the problem of relations between public space and high-rise buildings which were constructed in Warsaw in the years 1989–2022. The location of twenty-three high-rise buildings with a minimum height of one hundred meters was examined in terms of their role as basic elements of the city image and urban composition. According to the theory of K. Lynch and K. Wejchert, there were examined: multifunctionality of the space available in the public space in buildings, number of building users, parameters of the nearest neighboring public space including its area and width, and the visibility of buildings from the public space. Research shows that the high-rise buildings in Warsaw are located adjacent to public space that does not correspond to their scale and the generated traffic in the public space. Most of the analyzed buildings do not have a multifunctional ground floor, or offer more than three functions of public space. Most of the buildings are located at streets or traffic junctions while only two buildings are located at urban squares, and one at the closure of the streets. The paper presents the study conducted in the Mokotów district in Warsaw, encompassing circular practices of eight chosen local entities, from private, public, and NGO sectors. The choice was based on the preliminary research showing that the entities were already engaged in some form of the circular transition. The definition of the circular economy applied in the study was based on the one proposed by Kircherr, Reike, and Hekkert [2017] describing a circular economy as an economic system based on business models replacing the 'end-of-life' concept with reducing, alternatively reusing, recycling, and recovering materials in production/distribution and consumption processes. The aim is to accomplish sustainable development, by creating environmental quality, economic prosperity, and social equity to the benefit of current and future generations. The goals of the study encompassed: • verification if there is a common understanding of what the circular economy is; • identification and comparison of circular practices introduced by various actors; • identification of existing incentives for circular practices and expected benefits; • pinpointing the obstacles and barriers, both within organisations and outside. The identified practices were also verified to support more specific goals of the circular economy, present in the literature. The findings show that current benefits of the circular transition are limited and the actions are mostly driven by personal involvement. The lack of the support of local administration is evident, as well as the limitation of market solutions. The paper is devoted to the description of the methodology and research by design carried out to identify solutions enhancing the functional flexibility of a high-rise building located in Warsaw at. Grzybowska Street. The work presents the theoretical background as well as the conducted research and methodology. The scope of solutions related to functional flexibility concerned the interchangeability of service functions in the podium part of the building, changes in the use of the parking lot, and the provision of the means of changes in the arrangement of types and variants of types of apartments on the apartments levels. The investigation was carried out in the pre-design and design phases. Objectives and criteria of solutions were defined, and research works were carried out through iterations and checking in terms of the cost-effectiveness . The adopted solutions consist in designing the optimal hard portion of the building -- the core, the structural system, the arrangement of zones and installation rooms, and the use of structural and spatial over-designed systems. An optimal facade module has been developed. The research aims to introduce the design practice to the issue of flexibility, which is nowadays important for economic and environmental reasons. The aim of this paper is to analyse the current housing policy in Poland in terms of its influence on spatial order. The author discusses the relationship between housing policy and spatial order, as well as housing policy instruments that can contribute to shaping spatial order. In the nineteenth century, only two prayer books for Jewish women and girls were published in the Polish language: one written by Jakub Elsenberg (Warsaw 1855) and the other by Rozalia Saulson (Warsaw 1861). This small number contrasts with the numerous editions of tkhines in Yiddish and Andachts- and Gebetbücher in German. The aim of the paper is to discuss the circumstances of the creation of both books and specificity of these editions. The article tells the story of Henryk Ryszewski, who provided hiding to about a dozen Jews in his flat in the Warsaw district of Mariensztat. Accused after the war of blackmailing Jews (as I think, wrongly), he was convicted and spent several years in prison. The paper discusses the circulation and thermal conditions over Poland and their dependence on the sign and values of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index (hereinafter NAO+ and NAO-). The input data used in the research consisted of average monthly values of air temperature in Warsaw, NAO index values, and a calendar of atmospheric circulation types according to Lityński (1969). The study comprised the three winter months (December, January,February) from the period 1951-2015. The dependence between the circulatory and thermal conditions was investigated on the basis of 10 months representing each of the winter months with the highest NAO+ and NAOvalues and 10 months with the greatest positive and negative temperature deviations from the long-term average (Δt+, Δt-), based on the assumption, that they should largely be the same months. In general, the analysis confirmed these assumptions, but it also showed that there are deviations from previously known regularities as regards the effect of the positive or negative phases of the NAO on the thermal conditions in Poland. This paper aims to present the history of the School of Political Sciences in Warsaw since 1915 to the beginning of WWII. It is also an attempt to depict its origins and the evolution of its academic model inspired by the Paris Institute of Political Studies (École Libre des Sciences Politiques). The School of Political Sciences is shown from the perspective of former Polish émigrés in the Circle of former Polish students from Leipzig, led by Edmund Jan Reymann. Reyman, the founder and head of the school, brought about the setting up of the Social Institute (IS). The paper focuses on the role the School of Political Sciences in Warsaw, which operated from a modernistic building, played in the development of political sciences both in the capital and across the country. The school had become an academic centre equipped with modern facilities like specialist studies, libraries, research institutes and rich collections. Under the auspices of the school and IS many publishing activities were undertaken, the flagship being the Encyclopedia of Political Sciences, the biggest publication devoted to political sciences in the inter‑war period. Continuous urban development significantly transforms the ecosystem in a big city. The increasing frequency of heat waves and their influence on the rise in mortality in big cities suggest that the thermal hazard (long‐term occurrence of high air temperature) is one of the key climatic hazards of present times. The global temperature rise, reinforced in urbanized areas by the anthropogenic heat flux, leads to intensified convection processes and increased precipitation, especially torrential rain. One of the most important hydrological hazards in a big conurbation is the urban flood hazard. In this paper the identified climatic hazards occurring in a big city are analysed: the thermal hazard and the urban flood hazard. The areas currently exposed to thermal and urban flood hazards in Warsaw are identified and assessed in terms of the hazard level. The results obtained are verified with the data from meteorological measuring stations (the thermal hazard) and from the Fire Department interventions connected with rainfall and flooding (the urban flood hazard). A map of hydro‐meteorological hazards was created by combining thermal hazard and urban flood hazard maps. The approach combining the exposure to thermal and urban flood hazards, presented in this study, uses widely accessible spatial data and can be applied to any location. It can also play a significant role in assessing the adaptation of urban areas to climate change and be an important source of information on the current exposure to hydro‐meteorological hazards as well as their possible increase. From its 1940 establishment to the Great Deportation of 1942, accounts from the Warsaw Ghetto testify to the misery of beggars within its walls, who drew attention to their plight using songs, cries, shouts, and other sounds. Diaries, reports, and song texts from the ghetto, alongside memoirs and testimonies, reveal beggars' struggles—as well as non-beggars' often hostile reactions to their songs and other sounds. Drawing on scholarship in sensory history and cultural histories of the Holocaust, this article reveals that these reactions perpetuated established critiques of shund (artistic "trash") and tapped into longstanding anxieties about the Jewish community's status as modern, civilized, and European. However, certain beggars' songs overcame listeners' hostility by directly confronting inequality and ghetto authorities' abuses of power. Beggars and their music were intrinsic to the Warsaw Ghetto's soundscape, and the debates they engendered reveal how Polish Jews imagined their community's future, even amid its destruction. Visiting urban green and blue spaces improves the quality of life in cities as it helps to preserve human-nature bonds. In this context, the role of urban parks and forests has been well-recognised; however, much less is known about the landscapes of inland water bodies. To fill this gap, the study aimed to identify spatiotemporal patterns of recreational activities in the urban riverscape in relation to the visitors' residential proximity. Also, survey results were combined with spatial and remote sensing data to determine how the spatial characteristics of the riverscape affect its recreational use. The case of Warsaw, Poland, was used. The results indicated that the riverscape serves as a local park for the neighbouring communities, while it is rather a warm-weekend attraction for far-living ones. Visitors concentrate in the city centre, and spread out along the communication paths; however, spatial patterns of the magnitude of particular activities also show interbank differences. Spatial error models of drivers of riverscape recreation revealed (1) the multifaceted role of trees in densely visited areas and (2) the importance of physical availability for contact with the urban river. These findings expand knowledge on the recreational use of urban rivers by exploring its place-related motivations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to focus on social representations of Warsaw (Poland) as a tourist destination of 210 first visitors from seven EU and extra-EU countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, United Kingdom and United States of America) interviewed before and after their visit. In the framework of the social representations theory, the “cultural baggage”, rooted in the collective and social memory, forms anticipatory representations of the imagined places that may undergo transformations after the visit. How does this transformation occur?Design/methodology/approach The authors consider the transformation of social representations as detected by means of a self-administered questionnaire that comprised the following tools: scales to measure the strength of various information sources about Warsaw (school, literature, movies, songs, internet, press, tourist guides, documentaries, interpersonal communication and other); associative networks (de Rosa, 2002) with the stimulus word “Warsaw”; a list of adjectives describing the city and its centre, as well as a list of the most important places in Warsaw. The questionnaires were coded to ensure anonymity of participants while enabling the researcher to administer them for the second time (after the visit). According to the modelling approach to social representations (de Rosa, 2013a), the research was guided by three related hypotheses concerning transformation of social representations of Warsaw.Findings The results confirmed the hypotheses of potential changes in the representations that shift the focus from Warsaw as “communist” to “green” capital city, and of the role of the Polish language as a “communicative barrier” for recalling specific names of city-places after their visit.Research limitations/implications Social representations exist in people’s minds, and they include images that are further interpreted (Howarth, 2011). Especially when visitors are asked about places, it is likely that they recall specific images, but not their names. Since the questionnaires required them to write down the answers, words often did not correspond to the volatile and dynamic images that the human mind creates. In spite of recalling a specific park or fountain, participants resorted to general categories and simply wrote “park” or “fountain”. However, this limitation is familiar to the majority of social psychological researchers and very difficult, if not impossible, to overcome. The new research directions launched to integrate the research line of field studies with investigations based on new media offer complementary insights and opportunities (de Rosa and Bocci, 2014).Practical implications Destination branding has numerous practical implications. According to Ekinci and Hosany (2006), developing efficient communication methods is crucial to launching a distinctive and attractive destination personality. Hosany et al. (2006) have demonstrated that personality traits are ubiquitous in consumers’ evaluations of tourism destinations and therefore promotional campaigns should emphasize the distinctive personality of tourism destinations, based on the emotional components of destination image. European capital cities compete for visitors in the mature and saturated market, where brand strength is positively related to tourism intensity (Mikulić et al., 2016).Originality/value Examining how social representations of a city are transformed by the visit from the perspective of the supra-disciplinary theory of Moscovici constitutes an original way to link imagery and tourist practices. The major cultural issues, such as history, language, art and traditions affect the theory and practice of urban tourism. This paper aimed to provide an understanding of the segment of pre-war buildings in Warsaw (Poland) and its position within the housing stock in the light of restitution of private properties. Although the majority of the buildings were destroyed during the Second World War, enclaves of the pre-war buildings still exist in the central districts of the capital city of Poland. The communalization of land in Warsaw in 1945 considerably reduced the proportion of private ownership. In the following years, the scarcity of funds for repairs and rehabilitation of the pre-war buildings contributed to their poor maintenance, resulting in worsening housing conditions. Since 1989, the political and economic transformation in Poland strengthened the privatization and paved the way to restitution of communalized properties to their previous private owners or their heirs. However, lack of law on property restitution and the complexity of groups of interest involved in this process (former private owners, 'buyers of claims,' municipality and tenants) entail different tensions. In this way, the private owners struggle for years with restitution procedures, 'buyers of claims' attempt to make profit on restitution, and sitting tenants defend their right to stay and to pay lower rents after the building is returned. Finally, the renaissance or decline of restituted pre-war residential buildings in Warsaw is strongly influenced by the type of existing ownership structure of individual dwellings in a building which may facilitate or hamper its refurbishment. The paper provides an overview of trends and processes of change affecting new social housing provision in Prague and Warsaw. The local responses are reviewed within the context of changes to the national housing system defining the performance of municipal and non-profit housing sectors. The research analyses the mix of policy instruments implemented in three major policy domains-regulatory, fiscal and financial-to promote the production of new social housing in the two cities. The system of new social housing provision is examined as a dynamic process of interaction between public and private institutions defining housing policy outcomes. The outcomes are evaluated through a series of indicators related to housing output, stability of investment, differentiation of rents, affordability and choice. The overview demonstrates how significant shifts in regulatory and fiscal policy, coupled with decentralization of responsibilities for social housing, limit the opportunities for more efficient performance in the sector and its growth. This is particularly evident in Warsaw, where the sector operates as a social safety net. New social housing in both cities has better quality and remains affordable, but access is constrained and waiting times have increased. The research highlights the problem of declining output, dwindling financial resources, and lack of cost recovery due to universal rent control. This is eroding the sustainability of social housing, potentially leading to lower investment and subsequent privatisation. In Warsaw, housing allowances are a municipal responsibility making the liberalization of rents difficult, while Prague has moved in the direction of rent deregulation with a more robust system of means-tested housing support provided by the central government. Eating and drinking venues are key to the creation of new forms of city living that are associated with the regeneration of de-industrialized and depressed urban areas. New 'food clusters' with social functions are becoming centers of leisure for locals and tourists alike and they can include various types of food and cuisine. They can also be part of the revitalization strategies of specific city neighborhoods. This article investigates two evolving food areas in the city of Warsaw, Poland that are regenerating the Mirów sub-district – Browary Warszawskie and Norblin Factory, focusing on tourists and local residents. It draws on previous literature, internet sites and observation. The article proposes that the international rather than the local cuisine on offer aims to attract more local residents than tourists and that the types of cuisine on offer, which represent formalized/'luxury' street food, are in line with the gentrification of these areas. Thus, using a specific district in Warsaw the article aims to contribute to the debate on the possible role of new food landscapes in the regeneration – and gentrification – of urban areas. Purpose: During World War II, scientific studies were conducted in the Jewish ghetto of Warsaw (Poland). This research, focusing on hunger‐induced disease, was embedded in circumstances of omnipresent hunger and starvation. Ophthalmologist Szymon Fajgenblat (1900–1944) was one of the involved physicians and wrote a manuscript about ophthalmological changes during starvation. The background and the findings of his research are discussed in this article. Methods: Literature and archival research. Results: The Warsaw ghetto existed from 1941 to 1943 until it was destroyed, just like most of its inhabitants. Before destruction took place, the Nazis tried to kill the residents—almost half a million Jews—by means of starvation. Led by dermatologist Israel Milejkowski, a group of Jewish physicians decided to study the physical effects of hunger on human beings. Twenty‐eight physicians would participate in the Hunger Disease Studies, including Fajgenblat. He linked cataracts to serious undernourishment and observed scleral thinning as another sign in hunger disease; the latter likely responsible for the low intraocular pressure found in the study population. Surprisingly, no complaints of night blindness or ophthalmological findings, characteristic of vitamin A deficiency, were observed in the study population. Conclusion: The Hunger Disease Studies are a unique written medical and historical monument of the Jewish physicians of the Warsaw ghetto. Rainfall expected to occur in a given period is defined as dependable rainfall. The increasing pressure on freshwater resources necessitates efficient water use in the agricultural sector, where water is used the most globally. Therefore, dependable rainfall values in dry (80%), normal (50%) and wet (20%) periods, which are used in the planning and operation stages of irrigation networks, can be determined by analysis. In this study, the change in the irrigation water requirement of apple trees was investigated based on the dependable rainfall of Warsaw and Isparta, two important apple production regions of Poland and Turkey. For this purpose, dependable rainfall values in both locations between 1984 and 2021 were calculated monthly and annually with the Rainbow program. Then, using the climate parameters of the relevant years, plant water consumption and irrigation water requirements were calculated with the help of Cropwat software. As a result of the research, rainfall values expected to occur in the dry, normal and rainy years in Warsaw are 466 mm, 532 mm and 604 mm, respectively, while, in Isparta, these values are 422 mm, 520 mm and 602 mm, respectively. Crop water requirements calculated based on dependable rainfall are 363 mm, 237 mm and 108 mm in Warsaw during the dry, normal and wet periods, while these values are 452 mm, 367 mm and 277 mm, respectively, in Isparta. The application of appropriate irrigation rates that take into account water requirements will optimize the use of water resources and also improve apple yields. In recent times, the emergence of coworking spaces (CSs) has changed not only the way workers cooperate, but also how they carry out their activities. This phenomenon, limited mainly to urban areas, has spread heterogeneously across cities. The paper focuses on the location of CSs in Barcelona, Warsaw and Utrecht, three European cities that differ in terms of the typology of creation of these workspaces. In the three analysed cities, CSs are mainly private initiatives, although in Barcelona they are developed by small entrepreneurs, while in Warsaw they are developed by large multinational CS chains. Using K-density (Kd) functions and density maps, we contribute to the empirical literature by identifying how CSs coagglomerate with the service sectors, how CSs are concentrated in core areas of each city and how these factors differ between cities, taking into account the typology of CSs. We found that the CS location and coagglomeration depend on the spatial structure of the city and its development model; therefore, policymakers should take this into account in order to implement appropriate policy measures to attract CSs • CSs agglomerate differently in cities with different levels of urban hierarchy and reveal different CSs location strategies. • The coagglomeration of CSs with Knowledge Intensive Services (KIS) and symbolic knowledge base firms has been confirmed. • Market and high tech KIS with CSs build an urban entrepreneurial ecosystem. In times of globalisation and super-mobility, ideas of normality are in turmoil. In different societies in, across and beyond Europe, we face the challenge of undoing specific notions of normality and creating more inclusive societies with an open culture of learning to live with differences. The scope of the paper is to introduce some findings on encounters with difference and negotiations of social values in relation to a growing visibility of difference after 1989 in Poland, on the background of a critique of normality/normalisation and normalcy. On the basis of interviews conducted in Warsaw, we investigate how normality/normalisation discourses of visible homosexuality and physical disability are incorporated into individual self-reflections and justifications of prejudices (homophobia and disabilism). The digital turn has opened up new research opportunities for cinema historians on the three levels of data search, processing, and interpretation. Inspired by the New Cinema History (NCH), this article shows how online libraries and computer software (Excel, Citavi, QGIS) can be used for innovative interdisciplinary studies of cinema in early 1910s Warsaw. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including statistical data and daily newspapers in Russian, Polish, and Yiddish, this article discusses cinema topography and sheds new light on the biographies and business activities of two local film producers. It then traces the paths of their films, drawing conclusions about the potential audience in the city where Russians, Poles and Jews lived side by side rather than together. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Severely repressed after the anti-Russian uprising, Warsaw entered a period of forced centralisation in the Empire after 1881, with all elements of Polish history and traditions erased form school textbooks and public life. This article describes the urban revival at the end of the nineteenth century, which also included the rehabilitation of Warsaw's central historic space. The revolution of 1905 led to the possibility of establishing institutions which could be in charge of monuments and of disseminating knowledge about the urban past. The Old Town became quite fashionable among the Polish intelligentsia, whose wealthier representatives bought homes, including one that was turned into the city museum. In 1912 a large exhibition of Warsaw's past displayed pieces from the final decades of the eighteenth century. The museum, its locality and the historic exhibits were proof of the historic consciousness of the groups involved in its establishment, their national ideal, as well as the mission of propagating knowledge among the less conscious urban population. This process was part of the cultural and political modernisation of the urban society, which developed alongside other important issues, including discussions about the re-establishment of self-government in the city and abandoning its fortress status.
