The issue of urban resilience plays great significance and value for the sustainable development of cities, which has attracted increasing attention from scholars and governments, especially in the western region of China. Based on the Production-Living-Ecological (PLE) system, this study attempts to describe urban resilience by the combination system that contains with P,L,E subsystem. The integrated approach including FAHP-EM,GRA-TOPSIS, CCDM, and ODM is proposed to reveal the urban resilience level and seek out the key constraints' indicators. Then, an empirical analysis of panel data of 18 cities in Sichuan Province from 2011 to 2021 was conducted to analyze the development process. The valuation results suggested that:(1)for urban resilience level, most cities at the moderate imbalance level and basically maintained at this level, only Chengdu is reaching the basic coordination level since in 2013.(2)The insufficient development of P,L,E subsystem is the reason for the moderate imbalance development, especially the key limiting factor is the P subsystem's low development level.(3)the most prominent obstacle indicators are x1(per capita local financial expenditure on science and technology), x2(per capita of R&D spending), x8(total export-import per capita), x14(number of people with basic medical insurance), x22(length of urban drainage pipeline), x23(number of public toilets per person) and the contribution values reach 7.56%,7.49%,11.02%, 9.14%,12.53%, 12.60% respectively. Nonylphenols (NPs), one of the known endocrine disrupting organic pollutants, had received full attention for their estrogenic potency and ubiquitous distribution in the environment. Due to its chemical properties and compositions of technical nonylphenols (tNPs), which was persistent and soil environments for a long time and affect the ecosystem vigorously, degradation behaviour of a nonylphenol isomer (NP38) and the para‐substituded nonylphenols (4‐NPs) in water and soil was compared in this study. The results showed that the 4‐NPs and NP38 could be degraded under the mercury lamp in ultrapure water, 90% of 4‐NPs and NP38 were photodegradated in 2 h, but the removal rate of the 4‐NPs was slightly faster than the NP38. The NP38 was almost completely decay under the UV in 120 min. The active species (NO3− and Fe3+) were benefit for the photogradation of NP38 and presented higher efficiency under the higher concentration. The biodegradable curves of the 4‐NPs and NP38 in the SS (The soil from sewage irrigation area) were similar, 84% of the NP38 was removed after 20 days later in SS, the 62.25% of the NP38 was remained after 60 days later in CS (the soil was from the groundwater irrigation area), but the removal rate of the NP38 was nearly two times to the 4‐NPs in the CS, and the structure of the nonylphenol isomers with α‐quaternary had influenced on its degradation in soils. The study was helpful for better understanding the migration and transformation behaviour of NPs and provided scientific basis for accurate assessment of environmental risk of NPs from the sewage irrigation area. Background: Since reforms were introduced to incentivize drug innovation in 2015, the Chinese pharmaceutical market has experienced unprecedented prosperity, with more new drugs than ever before, especially anticancer treatments. In 2021, Chinese regulatory agencies issued the new guideline for clinical research and development of antitumor drugs, triggering a series of responses on the drug market. Limited research has outlined the nature of the original new drugs in China to understand the dynamic response of the market. Methods: The objective of this article was to map the clinical development of approved new oncology drugs in China from 2015 to 2021 and differed from previous studies by focusing on original new drugs, using the United States as a benchmark, and elaborating the endogenous features of clinical trials. Results: Clinical trials conducted in China have risen to a level similar to that of the United States in many aspects of trial design, but there is still distance between the implementation and operational details of clinical trials. In the meantime, China has made significant breakthroughs in drug approval. Greater than 60% of novel anticancer drugs in China received accelerated approved for their first listing. Approximately 90% of the pivotal clinical trials supporting initial drug approval used surrogate measures as end points, and one half were nonrandomized or did not have a control group. However, duplicate development without evidence of a clinical advantage compared with current therapies was widely observed. Conclusions: By presenting a multidimensional landscape of clinical trials and approvals in the real world, this review allows interested researchers, developers, and even regulators to understand what has been done and what should be done next in anticancer drug development in China. The availability of oncology therapeutic drugs in China has increased significantly since 2015, not only because of the amelioration of drug lag issues but also because of the accelerated approval of original new drugs. By using the United States as a benchmark to depict the characteristics of these original new drugs and their clinical development status, the authors report that the development of original new drugs in China shares clinical designs similar to those used in the United States; however, the Chinese designs lack international plans, and the excess of me‐too strategies needs to be further improved. In the context of China's forest rights reform, promoting forest land circulation is the key to revitalizing forest land resources and promoting the development of the forestry industry. Based on the theoretical analysis of the effect of farmers' cognition on forest land transfer behavior, data from 790 farmers in typical areas of Chengdu were used for empirical testing with the binary logit model. At the same time, the effects of the cognitive differences of the farmers with different education levels on forest land circulation are discussed. Finally, appropriate instrumental variables were selected to modify the model, and the IV probit model was used to test the endogeneity of the model. The results showed that the (1) farmers' cognition had a significant positive effect on the forest land transfer behavior. Among them, in the order of the degree of impact, were the following: ecological cognition, policy cognition, risk cognition, social regulation, and benefit cognition. (2) Among the groups with different education levels, farmers with lower education levels will consider more aspects than farmers with higher education levels when choosing to transfer forest land. By broadening the research into the cognitive composition of farmers, this study deepens our understanding of the influence of farmers' cognition on forest land transfer behavior. Moreover, it is found that Chinese farmers have strong ecological rationality in addition to economic rationality, and ecological cognition plays a greater role in forest land transfer behavior than benefit cognition, which is of considerable significance for further research on forest land transfer behavior. Zangju (Citrus reticulata cv. Manau Gan) is the main citrus cultivar in Derong County, China, with unique aroma and flavour characteristics, but the use of Zangju peel (CRZP) is limited due to a lack of research on its peel. In this study, electronic nose, headspace-gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC–IMS), and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) methods were used to rapidly and comprehensively evaluate the volatile compounds of dried CRZP and to analyse the role of dynamic changes at different maturation stages. The results showed that seventy-eight volatile compounds, mainly aldehydes (25.27%) and monoterpenes (55.88%), were found in the samples at four maturity stages. The contents of alcohols and aldehydes that produce unripe fruit aromas are relatively high in the immature stage (October to November), while the contents of monoterpenoids, ketones and esters in ripe fruit aromas are relatively high in the full ripening stage (January to February). The PLS-DA model results showed that the samples collected at different maturity stages could be effectively discriminated. The VIP method identified 12 key volatile compounds that could be used as flavour markers for CRZP samples collected at different maturity stages. Specifically, the relative volatile organic compounds (VOCs) content of CRZP harvested in October is the highest. This study provides a basis for a comprehensive understanding of the flavour characteristics of CRZP in the ripening process, the application of CRZP as a byproduct in industrial production (food, cosmetics, flavour and fragrance), and a reference for similar research on other C. reticulata varieties. To evaluate the pollution level and health risk of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH), seawater, sediments, and aquatic organisms were sampled from the southern sea area of Zhejiang Province (Yangtze River Delta, China) between 2017 and 2019. TPH was widely present in the aquatic environment and products, and its concentration was highly variable. The average value of pollution index (PI) exceeded 1 from 2017 to 2018, and 45.46–69.19% of seawater samples and 56.87–50.00% of sediment samples were polluted. The results showed significant differences in the TPH concentration in various species of aquatic organisms. The average TPH value in aquatic organisms could be ranked in the order as follows: bivalve > shrimp > crab > fish, further reflecting that the ability to accumulate and metabolize TPH existed differently among aquatic organisms within the same pond aquaculture environment. It was relatively safe to eat aquatic products since the exposure risk index was found to be far below the threshold value in this study. Therefore, it would be prudent to undertake regular monitoring of TPH to ensure effective ecosystem functioning and seafood safety in the southern Zhejiang ocean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Changes in the consumption price of aquatic products will affect demand and fishermen's income. The accurate prediction of consumer price index provides important information regarding the aquatic product market. Based on the non-linear and non-smooth characteristics of fishery product price series, this paper innovatively proposes a fishery product price forecasting model that is based on Variational Modal Decomposition and Improved bald eagle search algorithm optimized Long Short Term Memory Network (VMD-IBES-LSTM). Empirical analysis was conducted using fish price data from the Department of Marketing and Informatization of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China. The proposed model in this study was subsequently compared with common forecasting models such as VMD-LSTM and SSA-LSTM. The research results show that the VMD-IBES-LSTM model that was constructed in this paper has good fitting results and high prediction accuracy, which can better explain the seasonality and trends of the change of China's aquatic product consumer price index, provide a scientific and effective method for relevant management departments and units to predict the aquatic product consumer price, and have a certain reference value for reasonably coping with the fluctuation of China's aquatic product market price. Schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma japonicum is a serious public health problem in China. Granuloma and hepatic fibrosis are the main pathological features of schistosomiasis japonica. The role and mechanism of egg-derived exosomes of S. japonicum in liver fibrosis remain unclear. In this study, we found that egg-derived exosomes of S. japonicum carry a new type of microRNA (miRNA-33). In vitro , this novel miRNA upregulated the expression of smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and collagen 1 α1 (Col 1 α1) in the human hepatic stellate cell (LX-2) line at both mRNA and protein levels. In vivo , this novel miRNA was upregulated in the serum of infected mice, and when injected into mice through the tail vein using miRNA agomir, α-SMA, Col 1 α1, and Col 3 α1 were upregulated in liver tissue at both mRNA and protein levels. In addition, this novel miRNA downregulated the expression of α-SMA and Col 1 α1 in liver tissue at mRNA and protein levels in mice infected with S. japonicum and treated with miRNA antagomir. The novel miRNA-33 upregulated TGF-β Receptor I (TGF-β RI) at both mRNA and protein levels in LX-2 cells. Our results suggest that this novel miRNA from egg-derived exosomes of S. japonicum can promote liver fibrosis in the host in a cross-species manner, and the degree of fibrosis can be decreased by inhibiting the expression of this miRNA. Shennongjia is one of the most important ecological function areas and ecologically vulnerable zones in the world. With the rapid development of social economies, especially tourism, the ecological environment of Shennongjia has experienced profound changes. Exploring the characteristics and changing trends of ecological environment in Shennongjia will help to analyze the causes of the damage to the ecological environment, and build a vulnerability analysis framework with multi-scale, multi-element, multi-flow, and multi-circulation characteristics, which provides an effective research paradigm and analysis tool for the study of regional ecological vulnerability. With the support of RS and GIS technology, this study uses spatial principal component analysis (SPCA) and the vulnerability scoring diagram (VSD) model to comprehensively and quantitatively analyze the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics and driving forces of ecological vulnerability in Shennongjia from 1996 to 2018. The VSD model was selected to decompose the vulnerability into three components of "exposure-sensitivity-adaptation", and 16 indicators were selected to construct an ecological vulnerability evaluation system in Shennongjia, and the evaluation data were organized in a progressive and detailed way. (1) During the study period, the overall ecological vulnerability of Shennongjia is in a mild vulnerability level, exhibiting differentiation characteristics of high in the northeast and low in the southwest. High vulnerability zones are mainly distributed in the main towns and roads. (2) The risk of ecological vulnerability of the entire region presents the characteristics of continuous decline. (3) Land-use types, population density, and vegetation coverage are the main factors driving the evolution of ecological vulnerability. (4) A high level of coupling coordination exists between ecological vulnerability and landscape patterns. Analyses of the ecological vulnerability of Shennongjia shows that the entire region is in a mild vulnerability level. The extreme vulnerability risk of the ecological environment shows polarization. The evolution of ecological environment in Shennongjia is the result of the interaction between human activities and natural environment. Debris slopes are widely distributed across the Three Gorges Reservoir area in China, and seasonal fluctuations of the water level in the area tend to cause high-frequency microseisms that subsequently induce landslides on such debris slopes. In this study, a cumulative damage model of debris slope with varying slope characteristics under the effects of frequent microseisms was established, based on the accurate definition of slope damage variables. The cumulative damage behaviour and the mechanisms of slope instability and sliding under frequent microseisms were thus systematically investigated through a series of shaking table tests and discrete element numerical simulations, and the influences of related parameters such as bedrock, dry density and stone content were discussed. The results showed that the instability mode of a debris slope can be divided into a vibration-compaction stage, a crack generation stage, a crack development stage, and an instability stage. Under the action of frequent microseisms, debris slope undergoes the last three stages cyclically, which causes the accumulation to slide out in layers under the synergistic action of tension and shear, causing the slope to become destabilised. There are two sliding surfaces as well as the parallel tensile surfaces in the final instability of the debris slope. In the process of instability, the development trend of the damage accumulation curve remains similar for debris slopes with different parameters. However, the initial vibration compaction effect in the bedrock-free model is stronger than that in the bedrock model, with the overall cumulative damage degree in the former being lower than that of the latter. The damage degree of the debris slope with high dry density also develops more slowly than that of the debris slope with low dry density. The damage development rate of the debris slope does not always decrease with the increase of stone content. The damage degree growth rate of the debris slope with the optimal stone content is the lowest, and the increase or decrease of the stone content makes the debris slope instability happen earlier. The numerical simulation study also further reveals that the damage in the debris slope mainly develops in the form of crack formation and penetration, in which, shear failure occurs more frequently in the debris slope. By comparing the usage of structural equation model (SEM) and tetra-class model (TCM) in the model structure, data analysis method, and result presentation when evaluating Chinese academic libraries, this study aims to illustrate the strategies in evaluating satisfaction of academic library services. The study sample consists of 353 academic library users who are asked to evaluate 27 Chinese typical academic library service elements. The findings show that SEM could reveal the influence relations among constructs by path coefficients, while TCM focuses on the visual classification and comparison of specific service elements based on their contributions to user satisfaction. These two models are complementary to each other. They can be used for comprehensively showing the influence factors and current situation of service satisfaction, which are valuable and instructive for improving the service quality of a digital library. The results also indicate that a digital library needs to ensure the quality of retrieval service elements and to improve the service capability of information-organizing service elements. Background For pediatric pneumonia, the meteorological and air pollution indicators have been frequently investigated for their association with viral circulation but not for their impact on disease severity. Methods We performed a 10-year prospective, observational study in 1 hospital in Chongqing, China, to recruit children with pneumonia. Eight commonly seen respiratory viruses were tested. Autoregressive distributed lag (ADL) and random forest (RF) models were used to fit monthly detection rates of each virus at the population level and to predict the possibility of severe pneumonia at the individual level, respectively. Results Between 2009 and 2018, 6611 pediatric pneumonia patients were included, and 4846 (73.3%) tested positive for at least 1 respiratory virus. The patient median age was 9 months (interquartile range, 4‒20). ADL models demonstrated a decent fitting of detection rates of R2 > 0.7 for respiratory syncytial virus, human rhinovirus, parainfluenza virus, and human metapneumovirus. Based on the RF models, the area under the curve for host-related factors alone was 0.88 (95% confidence interval [CI],.87‒.89) and 0.86 (95% CI,.85‒.88) for meteorological and air pollution indicators alone and 0.62 (95% CI,.60‒.63) for viral infections alone. The final model indicated that 9 weather and air pollution indicators were important determinants of severe pneumonia, with a relative contribution of 62.53%, which is significantly higher than respiratory viral infections (7.36%). Conclusions Meteorological and air pollution predictors contributed more to severe pneumonia in children than did respiratory viruses. These meteorological data could help predict times when children would be at increased risk for severe pneumonia and when interventions, such as reducing outdoor activities, may be warranted. Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine (Sinovac Biotech) is a quadrivalent split-virion-inactivated influenza vaccine approved in China in June 2020 for individuals ≥3 years of age. It contains 15 µg hemagglutinin per strain including A/H1N1, A/H3N2, B/Victoria, and B/Yamagata, which could potentially improve protection against influenza B viruses. In this review, we summarize the development of quadrivalent influenza vaccines in China and foreign countries, and assess the immunogenicity and safety from the phase I and III clinical trials of Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine in individuals ≥3 years of age. We also discuss the potential application of Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine in young children 6–35 months of age according to the results of the phase III trial. The immunogenicity and safety profiles of Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine containing two A and two B strains were comparable to the trivalent vaccines for the shared strains. The addition of a second B strain to the trivalent vaccine could induce superior immune responses for the alternate B strain. Since the two B strains co-circulated worldwide, the introduction of quadrivalent influenza vaccines has been expected to be a cost-effective strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims: Schistosomiasis japonica is a widespread human zoonotic disease, and in China, there are many patients with schistosomiasis suffering from liver fibrosis. Many studies have shown that natural killer (NK) cells could reduce the progression of hepatic fibrosis by directly killing hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). However, NK cells could not inhibit the progress of liver fibrosis induced by Schistosoma japonicum infection. We aimed to investigate the function of NK cells in schistosomiasis. Methods: BALB/c mice were infected with S. japonicum cercariae. The receptors and their proportions expressed on NK cells in the liver and spleen from infected mice were detected using flow cytometry. Levels of IFN-γ, perforin, and granzyme of NK cells, and collagen I, III, and α-SMA of hepatic tissue, were detected using quantitative real-time PCR. Changes in cytokine levels in sera were detected using a cytometric bead array. Liver fibrosis was evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin and Masson staining. NK function in the schistosomiasis model was analyzed. Results: From 2 to 4 weeks post-infection, NK cells were activated, with significantly increased levels of effector molecules (IFN-γ, perforin, and granzyme) that peaked at 4 weeks after infection. The proportion of NK cells increased in the liver and spleen from 6 to 10 weeks post-infection. However, the function of NK cells was inhibited from 6 to 10 weeks post-infection with significantly decreased levels of activated receptors (AR), inhibitory receptors (IR), and effector molecules. The levels of IFN-γ, IL-12, and IL-6 in mouse serum peaked at 6 weeks post-infection, and IL-10 and IL-21 levels peaked at 8 weeks post-infection. Hepatic fibrosis markers increased significantly at 6 weeks after infection. Conclusion: Our study suggested that NK cells were activated from 2 to 4 weeks post-infection and participated in inflammation in the mouse model. After the S. japonicum laid their eggs, NK cells became inhibited, with decreased levels of both activating and inhibitory NK cell receptors, as well as cytotoxic molecules. In addition, liver fibrosis formed. In mice infected with S. japonicum, the process of liver fibrosis might be alleviated by removing the functional inhibition of NK cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, facultatively anaerobic bacterium, designated FJ4-8T, was isolated from a rotten hemp rope in Chongqing City, PR China. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate was closely related to members of the family Sphingobacteriaceae, with the highest similarity to Pedobacter tournemirensis TF5-37.2-LB10T (95.3%) and low similarities to all other species of the genus Pedobacter (90.4–93.9%). Phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that strain FJ4-8T formed a stable subclade with Pedobacter tournemirensis TF5-37.2-LB10T. The clade with these two strains branched adjacent to a clade containing three species of the genus Arcticibacter. MK-7 was detected as the only respiratory quinone. The major fatty acids composed iso-C15:0, iso-C17:0 3-OH and summed feature three. Phosphatidylethanolamine, three aminophospholipids and one unidentified lipid were found as the major polar lipids. The major polyamine was identified as sym-homospermidine. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strain FJ4-8T and Pedobacter tournemirensis TF5-37.2-LB10T was 42.0 ± 2.5%. Based on its phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic characteristics, the novel strain and TF5-37.2-LB10T were found to be different from members of genera Pedobacter and Arcticibacter. FJ4-8T and TF5-37.2-LB10T represented different species. Therefore, FJ4-8T should be classified as a novel species of a novel genus in the family Sphingobacteriaceae, for which the name Pararcticibacter amylolyticus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FJ4-8T (= KCTC 62640T = CCTCC AB 2018052T). The draft genome sequence is 6290, 449 bp in length, the genomic DNA G+C content was 44.4 mol%. Pedobacter tournemirensis TF5-37.2-LB10T should be transferred to the novel genus as Pararcticibacter tournemirensis comb. nov. To secure effective and sustainable climate change policies, it is of the utmost importance to create synergies between socioeconomic and environmental development goals. Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) programs are being promoted as a suitable mechanism furthering, among others, carbon offsetting and poverty reduction in ecologically fragile areas of developing countries. Rural households are compensated for the loss of property and business income through income transfers and potential job opportunities connected to environmental programs. While the potential pro-poor effects of such policies are well recognized, the impact of PES on extremely poor households has not been systematically reviewed. Drawing on a pooled cross-sectional dataset of 5225 households in the Province of Sichuan, this paper analyzes the income and distributional effects among poor households in rural China participating in a forest carbon sink (FCS) program. To be able to make causal inferences, we employ an Instrumental Variable (IV) approach to control for potential endogeneity and self-selection. Our results indicate a strong need to adjust the PES program: While moderately poor rural households benefit from program participation, extremely poor rural households, in fact, suffer net losses. The main reason is that income reduction resulting from limited access to forest resources is compensated mainly via wage income from participating in forest tending work. Extremely poor households with low labor ability cannot make use of these job opportunities, and thus they'll not only fail to benefit but even incur losses from a PES program. While PES programs can be a viable tool for poverty reduction in underdeveloped regions due to their overall pro-poorness, they need to be accompanied by additional benefits for extremely poor rural households to avoid net losses among marginalized population groups especially. GuangChenpi (GCP), the dried pericarps of Citrus reticulata 'Chachi', has been consumed daily as a food and dietary supplement in China for centuries. Its health benefits are generally recognized to be dependent on storage time. However, the specific roles of microorganisms and metabolites during long-term storage are still unclear. In this study, comparative metabolomics and high-throughput sequencing techniques were used to investigate the effects of co-existing microorganisms on the metabolites in GCP stored from 1 to 30 years. In total, 386 metabolites were identified and characterized. Most compounds were flavonoids (37%), followed by phenolic acids (20%). Seventeen differentially upregulated metabolites were identified as potential key metabolites in GCP, and 8 of them were screened out as key active ingredients by Venn diagram comparative analyses and verified by network pharmacology and molecular docking. In addition, long-term storage could promote the accumulation of secondary metabolites. Regarding the GCP microbiota, Xeromyces dominated the whole 30-year aging process.Moreover, Spearman correlation analysis indicated that Bacillus thuringiensis and Xeromyces bisporus , the dominant bacterial and fungal species, were strongly associated with the key active metabolites. Our results suggested that the change of active ingredients caused by the dominant microbial is one of the mechanisms affecting the GCP aging process. An accurate prediction of lake water levels is of great significance to water resource regulation, flood prevention and mitigation. However, water level fluctuations have been increasingly serious due to abnormal climate and extreme events. In view of this, a VMD-EF-OBILSTM model was constructed for lake water levels based on multiple sources of hydrological and meteorological variables. In this model, water level data are transformed into low-frequency internal and high-frequency external terms by variable modal decomposition (VMD), and they are combined with external factors (EF) for multivariate prediction. The optimized bi-directional long short-term memory (OBILSTM) invokes the attention mechanism and optimizes the model's hyperparameters by whale optimization algorithm (WOA). Ultimately, the predictions of each component are linearly combined to obtain the forecast values. Abstract Urban residents spend the majority of time in indoor environments, which, however, may not be a safe haven for staying away from outdoor air pollution, especially in China. To examine this hypothesis, the particle mass concentrations (0.056–18 μm) and number concentrations (14–660 nm) were simultaneously measured in and outside of three typical urban indoor settings (n = 9), i.e., school, office and residence in Guangzhou, China from October–November 2014 (dry weather season) and June–August 2015 (wet weather season). The indoor and outdoor particle number concentrations were positively correlated with each other at all three sampling settings for both dry and wet weather seasons (r 2 = 0.13–0.65, p < 0.001). The infiltration factors and indoor/outdoor ratios of particles (14–660 nm) were estimated at 0.30–0.75 and 0.85–1.5, respectively, which were comparable to or higher than those (0.12–0.76 and 0.03–1.1) found in cites of other countries under infiltration conditions. Furthermore, the average infiltration factor of fine particle numbers (50–660 nm) in an office was 0.61 during a severe haze episode, indicating that approximately 60% of outdoor particles penetrated indoors. All findings suggested an efficient transport of outdoor particle sources into indoor environment, confirming that exposure of the general public to indoor particles in China should not be overlooked due to effective infiltration of outdoor particles and frequent heavy haze episodes. This qualitative inquiry examined the unique experiences of members in religious groups in the US and China to inductively derive a theory of what protects against suicide. Twenty-one non-religious group members (NRGMs), 21 religious group members (RGMs), and four from both types of groups completed interviews which were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results suggest that while both NRGMs and RGMs convene around a shared common goal, the RGMs goal was to live a life of faith together. Both NRGMs and RGMs experienced community, but RGMs' valued vulnerable sharing and prayer as vital to growing their faith. Results are most consistent with the theory that religion protects against suicide because it shapes beliefs which enable a suicidal person to resist suicidal thinking. Background: The molecular and genetic research showed the association between DFNA11 and mutations in MYO7A. This research aimed to identify a MYO7A mutation in a family with nonsyndromic autosomal dominant hearing loss. Methods: We have ascertained one large multigenerational Chinese family (Z029) with autosomal dominant late-onset progressive non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss. Genome-wide linkage analysis of the family mapped the disease locus to the DFNA11 interval, where the MYO7A was considered as a candidate gene. Sequencing of the PCR products was carried out for each sample. One hundred and fifty one control subjects with normal hearing functions were also evaluated. Results: The pathogenic mutation (c.2011G>A) was identified in the family. This mutation co-segregated with hearing loss in this family. No mutation of MYO7A gene was found in the 151 controls. Conclusions: The missense mutation of MYO7A is identified in the family displaying the pedigree consistent with DFNA11. We not only examined the clinical and genetic characteristics of the family, but also provided a basis for genetic counseling. We also summarized and analyzed the phenotypes and genotypes of all DFNA11 families, four of nine are Chinese families, suggesting that MYO7A mutations are not rare. Air pollutant concentration forecasting is an effective method of protecting public health by providing an early warning against harmful air pollutants. However, existing methods of air pollutant concentration prediction fail to effectively model long-term dependencies, and most neglect spatial correlations. In this paper, a novel long short-term memory neural network extended (LSTME) model that inherently considers spatiotemporal correlations is proposed for air pollutant concentration prediction. Long short-term memory (LSTM) layers were used to automatically extract inherent useful features from historical air pollutant data, and auxiliary data, including meteorological data and time stamp data, were merged into the proposed model to enhance the performance. Hourly PM 2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 2.5 μm) concentration data collected at 12 air quality monitoring stations in Beijing City from Jan/01/2014 to May/28/2016 were used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed LSTME model. Experiments were performed using the spatiotemporal deep learning (STDL) model, the time delay neural network (TDNN) model, the autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model, the support vector regression (SVR) model, and the traditional LSTM NN model, and a comparison of the results demonstrated that the LSTME model is superior to the other statistics-based models. Additionally, the use of auxiliary data improved model performance. For the one-hour prediction tasks, the proposed model performed well and exhibited a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 11.93%. In addition, we conducted multiscale predictions over different time spans and achieved satisfactory performance, even for 13–24 h prediction tasks (MAPE = 31.47%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background To assess the corneal diameter and its associations in children. Design Cross-sectional school-based study. Participants Six thousand twenty-six children aged 4-18 years were included in the Shandong Children Eye Study. Methods Horizontal corneal diameter was measured by laser interferometry-based ocular biometry. Main Outcome Measures Horizontal corneal diameter. Results Corneal diameter measurements were available for 5970 (99.1%) children. In multivariate analysis, larger horizontal corneal diameter (mean: 12.02 ± 0.38 mm; range: 10.1-15.0 mm) was associated with longer corneal curvature radius longer axial length, male gender, younger maternal age, rural region of habitation and lower intraocular pressure measurements. Higher prevalence of abnormally large corneas (macrocorneas; horizontal diameter ≥ 12.76 mm; mean value +2 × standard deviations; mean: 2.6%; 95% CI: 2.2, 3.0) was associated with longer corneal curvature radius, longer axial length, younger maternal age and male gender. Higher prevalence of abnormally small corneas (horizontal diameter ≤ 11.24mm; mean value −2 × standard deviations; mean: 2.4%; 95% CI: 2.0, 2.8) was correlated with shorter corneal curvature radius, shorter axial length and urban region of habitation. Neither abnormally large nor small corneas were correlated with time spent indoors/outdoors. Conclusions In 4 to 18-year-old children, larger corneal diameter was associated most strongly with flatter corneal curvature, followed by longer axial length and male gender. Corneal diameter was independent of age beyond an age of 4 years. Abnormally large and abnormally small corneas may be defined as being ≥12.76 and ≤11.24 mm in diameter, respectively. Understanding particle size distribution and size-resolved gas-particle partitioning of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) is important for characterizing their fate in atmosphere. However, the size-resolved gas-particle partitioning characteristics of SVOCs has not been adequately considered. To address this issue, the present study collected gaseous and size-fractioned particulate samples both in and outside of schools, offices, and residences in three districts of different urbanization levels in a megacity, Guangzhou, South China during two seasons. Typical SVOCs, including 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), six organophosphate esters and seven phthalic acid esters were measured. Emission sources, physicochemical properties, and environmental conditions at the sampling sites considerably impacted the spatiotemporal distribution patterns and particle size distribution of target SVOCs. Not all observed gas-particle partition coefficients (K p) of target SVOCs were negatively correlated with subcooled liquid-vapor pressures (P L 0), probably because certain factors, such as the non-exchangeable part of the particle-bound SVOCs, were not considered in traditional gas-particle partition theories. Particle size was an important factor affecting gas-particle partitioning. Adsorption was the dominant mechanism for PAHs with high molecular weight in different particle modes. A new model was established to predict size-resolved K p of PAHs with high molecular weight based on P L 0 and particle size. The aim of the present work was to determine maternal and fetal outcomes of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) in twin pregnancies. All twin pregnancies delivered above 28 gestational weeks in West China Second University Hospital from January 2013 to May 2015 were included. Data on maternal demographics and obstetric complications together with fetal outcomes were collected. The risk of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes were determined in relation to ICP by crude odds ratios (OR) and adjusted ORs (aOR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Subgroup analysis concentrated on the effect of assisted reproductive technology (ART), ICP severity, and onset time. A total of 1,472 twin pregnancies were included, of which 362 were cholestasis patients and 677 were conceived by ART. Higher rates of preeclampsia (aOR 1.96; 95% CI 1.35, 2.85), meconium-stained amniotic fluid (aOR 3.10; 95% CI 2.10, 4.61), and preterm deliveries (aOR 3.20; 95% CI 2.35, 4.37) were observed in ICP patients. Subgroup analysis revealed higher incidences of adverse outcomes in severe and early onset ICP groups. In conclusion, adverse maternal and fetal outcomes were strongly associated with ICP in twin patients. Angelica sinensis (AS), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, has pharmaceutical effects on menstrual illness, cerebrovascular diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and cognitive impairments. However, until recently, few studies had explored its antidepressant effect. The current study attempts to investigate the effect of AS extracts on chronic unpredictable mild stress- (CUMS-) induced depression in rats. Male SD rats were exposed to a CUMS-inducing procedure for 5 weeks, resulting in rodent depressive behaviors that included reduced sucrose consumption and lessened sucrose preference ratios in sucrose preference test, prolonged immobility times and decreased struggling time in force swim test, and decreased locomotor activity in open field test. Moreover, the expression of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the phosphorylation of cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB) and extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK 1/2) were markedly decreased in the hippocampus in depressed rats. However, chronically treating the depressed rats with AS (1 g/kg) normalized their depression-related behaviors and molecular profiles. In conclusion, in the present study, we show that AS extracts exerted antidepressant effects that were mediated by the BDNF signaling pathway: in AS-treated depressed rats, the expression of the BDNF protein and the phosphorylation of its downstream targets (ERK 1/2, CREB) were upregulated in the hippocampus. Historical records of eight heavy metals (HMs: Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni, Pb, As, Hg and Cd) were analyzed in two dated sediment cores collected from the coastal East China Sea (Meishan Bay, MSB) to investigate the influence of anthropogenic activities on estuary sediment from 1972 to 2019. The sedimentary records of HMs in the two cores reflected the development of economy and change of energy consumption in China's east coastal areas. The contents of most HMs in sediments had no change or showed a downward trend before the 1980s. After the 1980s, the contents of HMs showed an increasing trend, mainly because of the rapid development of aquaculture, industry, and agriculture. The distribution of HMs outside the bay (OB) was mainly affected by industry, shipping, and agriculture (vegetable planting), while HMs in sediments inside the bay (IB) was affected by shipping, agriculture, and aquaculture. Principle component analysis (PCA) showed that Cd, Cr, and Ni could be attributed to industrial discharge, while As, Cu, Pb, and Zn were associated with shipping, agriculture, and aquaculture. Sediments were slightly polluted with Cd (I geo :0.10–0.71, CF:1.90–7.74) and Ni (I geo :0.08–0.92, CF:1.25–12.55), and seriously polluted with Hg (I geo :0.95–1.76, CF:13.43–85.65). This study provides insights for the local governments to raise awareness of HM pollution in the coastal East China Sea and formulate corresponding pollution control measures. Previous studies on motivations for corporate environmental disclosure ( CED) in emerging countries are generally undertheorized and have neglected to investigate disincentives. This study addresses this gap using legitimacy theory to determine whether differences exist between Chinese and Malaysian managers in relation to incentives and disincentives for CED. Our findings reveal that differences exist suggesting that legitimization strategies, if employed, vary and perceptions of legitimacy threat differ between countries. The study also reports that the dominating incentive for managers in both countries is to appear reputable; implying a strategic CED approach is undertaken in an attempt to alter public perceptions about the legitimacy of an organization. Interestingly, the incentive of regulatory pressure was found insignificant in both countries in persuading companies to engage in CED. Finally, potential damage to a company's reputation received considerable support from all respondents revealing a degree of uncertainty about CED. This study is aimed at revealing the contributions of microblogging services to user satisfaction in China. An empirical investigation was conducted to analyse user experience on the 36 main microblogging service elements, using a sample of 216 users of Sina Weibo, which is the biggest microblog in China. The tetra-class model was then applied to identify the contribution of each service element to the overall satisfaction. Through correspondence analysis, we calculated, respectively, the contribution to dissatisfaction when the service element was negatively evaluated and that to satisfaction when it was positively evaluated. Based on these two contribution values, we classified the service elements into four categories: Basic, Secondary, Plus, and Key. In order to know the preferences of different users towards the microblogging service elements, we segmented the users into groups according to their microblogging characteristics and personal attributes and then discussed the variations of the service, categorising among different user groups. Purpose: (1) To investigate associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in osteopontin (OPN) and its receptor-cluster of differentiation 44 (CD44) genes and gastric cancer susceptibility. (2) To explore the correlation of OPN and CD44 expression of gastric cancer. Methods: We detected 26 SNPs of the genes in gastric cancer patients from the Chinese Han population by Sequenom technique and performed expression of OPN in combination with CD44 in 243 tissues samples of the cases by tissue microarray and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results: We found that the minor alleles of OPN rs4754C>T and OPN rs9138C>A remained strongly associated with decreased gastric cancer risk ( P = 1.53 × 10, odds ratio (OR) 0.642, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.511-0.808 and P = 1.59 × 10, OR 0.642, 95 %CI 0.510-0.809). OPN variant rs1126772A>G and CD44 variant rs353639A>C significantly contributed to elevated risk of gastric cancer ( P = 0.042, OR 1.279, 95 % CI 1.008-1.622 and P = 0.047, OR 1.334, 95 % CI 1.003-1.772). Haplotypes of OPN and CD44 variants significantly influenced risk of gastric cancer. Clinical data indicated that rs4754 and rs9138 of OPN were significantly associated with smoking ( P = 0.029, OR 0.343, 95 % CI 0.127-0.926 and P = 0.029, OR 0.343, 95 %CI 0.127-0.926) and OPN rs1126772 revealed associations with tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage ( P = 0.025, OR 1.765, 95 % CI 1.073-2.905) and tumor differentiation ( P = 0.031, OR 1.722, 95 % CI 1.049-2.825). OPN expression was observed in 133 of the 243 cases (54.7 %) by IHC and was correlated with serosa invasion ( P = 0.013), TNM stage ( P = 0.003) and lymph node metastasis ( P = 0.002). CD44 expression was found in 92 of the 243 cases (37.9 %) and was associated with tumor size ( P = 0.005) and lymph node metastasis ( P = 0.023), respectively. The OPN expression displayed a positive association with CD44 ( P = 0.01, r = 0.164). Conclusions: We found that the polymorphisms rs4754, rs9138 and rs1126772 of OPN gene and rs353639 of CD44 gene were significantly associated with gastric cancer. Studies of the resources and services provided through university digital libraries have focused on evaluation criteria which consider usability, content, technology, and context. The factors influencing user perception of university digital libraries have not been explored and discussed from the perspective of specific library service types. Structural equation modeling was used to explore influencing factors and the relationships among them, based on 353 responses to survey questionnaires regarding academic DLs in China. Findings show that information providing services, information retrieval services, and individual services are direct influencing factors, while information organizing services affect user perception indirectly through information retrieval services and individual services. Based on the Urban-Population-Industry (UPI) system, the study utilizes coupling coordination degree to evaluate urbanization city-industry integration level, and identifies the key factors affecting the level of urbanization city-industry integration. Firstly, this study attempts to comprehensively describe the urbanization city-industry integration by a complex system that combines with U, P, I subsystem. Secondly, a comprehensive method for calculating the coupling coordination degree is proposed to reveal the urbanization city-industry integration level in the process of urbanization, including: (i) Grey Relation Analysis (GRA) with Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS); (ii) Hesitant Fuzzy Preference Relationship (HFPR) and Entropy Method (EM); (iii) Coupling Coordination Degree Model (CCDM); and (iv) Particle Swarm Optimization Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network (PSOBPANN). Then, identify the key aspects that influence the level of urbanization city-industry integration. Finally, an empirical analysis of panel data of 18 cities in Sichuan Province from 2000 to 2016 was conducted to analyze the development process. The results indicated: (1) At present, most cities in Sichuan, western China, are at the low coordination level of urbanization city-industry integration. Attention should be given to promote common regional development by playing to the radiating role of the central city; and (2) U, P, I subsystem's insufficient development is the reason for low coordination between the level of urbanization city-industry integration. Schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma japonicum is a major parasitic disease in the People's Republic of China. Liver fibrosis is the main pathological mechanism of schistosomiasis, and it is also the major lesion. The common drug used for its treatment, praziquantel (PZQ), does not have a marked effect on liver fibrosis. Resveratrol (RSV), which is an antioxidant, improves mitochondrial function and also attenuates liver fibrosis. The combination of PZQ and RSV has been found to have a synergistic antischistosomal effect on Schistosoma mansoni; additionally, the activity of PZQ is enhanced in the presence of RSV. Here, we examine the therapeutic effects of RSV on the S. japonicum infection in a mouse model, and we investigate RSV as a novel therapeutic agent for mitochondrial function and schistosomiasis-associated liver fibrosis (SSLF). Mitochondrial membrane potential was examined using flow cytometry analysis. The expression of the mitochondrial biogenesis genes PGC-α and fibrosis-associated genes collagen I, collagen III and α-SMA were examined using western blot analysis. Fibrosis-associated histological changes were examined using Masson trichrome staining. Additionally, the effects of RSV on S. japonicum adult worms were examined using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. RSV treatment improved mitochondrial function by increasing membrane potential and increasing PGC-α expression (mitochondrial biogenesis). Further, RSV attenuated liver injury, including liver scarring, by decreasing collagen deposition and the extent of fibrosis, based on the decrease in expression of the fibrosis-related genes. RSV also decreased the adult worm count and caused considerable physical damage to the worm. These results indicate that RSV upregulates mitochondrial biogenesis and inhibits fibrosis. China's sustainable development is inseparable from the sustainable development of marine eco-economic system. This paper applied emergy analysis to evaluate the sustainability of China's marine eco-economic system. The results showed that China's marine eco-economic system mainly depended on renewable resources to operate and renewable resources and economic output were the most important components. The gap between inputs and outputs was expanding in China's marine eco-economic system. The emergy density of China's marine eco-economic system was low. The unit emergy value of the southern areas were higher than that of the northern areas in China. The emergy yield ratio of China's marine eco-economic system increased steadily and the emergy yield ratio showed a pattern of high, medium and low coexistence. The environmental loading rate of China's marine eco-economic system was very low. The emergy sustainability index of China's marine eco-economic system was high, and the sustainability of the marine eco-economic system was good. Natural gaseous fungicides have great application potential for controlling the fungal decay of postharvest agroproducts. In fact, the fruit of Illicium verum has traditionally been buried in household grain piles to prevent fungal infection in China. However, the antifungal effects of the I. verum fruit against fungi in storage grains remain unclear. In this study, the volatile compounds from I. verum fruit were analyzed, and trans -anethole was found to be the main constituent, accounting for 87.9%. The antifungal potency of trans -anethole on the fungus Aspergillus flavus was then tested. Trans -anethole completely inhibited the growth of A. flavus at concentrations of 0.286 and 0.4 μL/mL in the vapor and liquid phases, respectively. Fumigation with 0.8 μL/mL trans -anethole prevented A. flavus proliferation in wheat grains with 20% moisture content. Further biochemical and transcriptomic analyses revealed the inhibitory effect of trans -anethole on A. flavus spores. Using scanning electron microscopy, we observed that trans -anethole could affect spore morphology in a dose-dependent manner. Transcriptomic analyses showed that 8722 genes, mainly those related to oxidative phosphorylation, citric acid cycle, mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling, ABC transport, and autophagy, were significantly differentially expressed in A. flavus spores exposed to trans -anethole. Trans -anethole treatment also increased mitochondrial membrane potential and induced intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species and DNA damage in A. flavus spores. Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is an important zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus). CE seriously threatens human health and the development of animal husbandry. The Ngari region is one of the world's highest endemic regions for CE, while genetic polymorphisms of E. granulosus were unclear. Paraffin slices of liver Cyst were collected from seventy-nine surgical patients with echinococcosis in the Ngari region. DNA was extracted from samples. The cox1 and cob genes of mitochondrial DNA of E. granulosus were simultaneously amplified and sequenced. The sequencing results were compared with the standard sequence (KU925397.1and HF947574.1). Phylogenetic trees and the haplotype network of cob and cox 1 genes were constructed and analyzed genotypes of E. granulosus isolated from humans in the Ngari Region of Tibet. Out of 79 hydatid cyst samples collected from surgery patients, 60 isolates were identified as G1/ G3, and two isolates were identified as G6/ G7. Analysis of the cob / cox 1 genes revealed 9/7 mutations resulting in 8/6 haplotypes, respectively. The cob and cox 1 neutrality indices computed by Tajima's D and Fu's Fs tests showed high negative values in Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (E. granulosus s. s.). The result suggested that E. granulosus in the Ngari region experienced population expansion or a negative selection. We found that G1/ G3 was still the main genotype, and G6/ G7 was found occasionally in humans of the Ngari region. Therefore, we recommend future surveys and control efforts to investigate G1/ G3 and G6/ G7 transmission in the Ngari region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plant volatile organic compounds (PVOCs) have shown great potential as alternatives to synthetic insecticides or fungicides for stored grain management. Zanthoxylum schinifolium pericarp, a traditional Chinese spice, is conventionally buried in grain piles to prevent fungal spoilage of stored grains in China. However, the chemical basis and antifungal mechanism of PVOCs from Z. schinifolium pericarp by which they inhibit spoilage remain unclear. In this study, the effectiveness of PVOCs from Z. schinifolium pericarp against Aspergillus flavus growth in high-moisture wheat grains was studied under simulated storage conditions. The growth of A. flavus in the grains was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. The chemical composition of PVOCs from Z. schinifolium pericarp was determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry; linalool (50.31%) and d -limonene (20.92%) were the two main components. An antifungal experiment showed that 0.571 and 1.2 μL/mL concentrations of linalool completely inhibited A. flavus growth upon vapor and liquid contact, respectively. d -limonene showed much lower antifungal activity, indicating that linalool is responsible for the antifungal activity of PVOCs from Z. schinifolium pericarp. Linalool treatment disrupted the cell membrane of A. flavus , resulting in increased electrolyte leakage and A 260nm in the culture supernatant. After 6 h of exposure to 1.2 μL/mL linalool, metabolomic analysis revealed 90 differentially expressed metabolites in A. flavus mycelia, including 69 upregulated and 21 downregulated metabolites. It was speculated that linalool inhibited A. flavus by disrupting the permeability and integrity of cell membranes, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and ATP binding cassette transport and by inducing mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the major viral infection problems worldwide in public health. The exclusive proprietary Chinese medicine Ganweikang (GWK) tablet has been marketed for years in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). However, the pharmacodynamic material basis and underlying mechanism of GWK are not completely clear. This study is aimed at investigating the pharmacological mechanism of the GWK tablet in the treatment of CHB. The chemical ingredient information was obtained from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP), Traditional Chinese Medicines Integrated Database (TCMID), and Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry of CAS. Ingredients and disease-related targets were defined by a combination of differentially expressed genes from CHB transcriptome data and open-source databases. Target-pathway-target (TPT) network analysis, molecular docking, and chemical composition analysis were adopted to further verify the key targets and corresponding active ingredients of GWK. Eight herbs of GWK were correlated to 330 compounds with positive oral bioavailability, and 199 correlated targets were identified. The TPT network was constructed based on the 146 enriched targets by KEGG pathway analysis, significantly associated with 95 pathways. Twenty-five nonvolatile components and 25 volatile components in GWK were identified in UPLC-QTOF/MS and GC-MS chromatograms. With the combination of airborne Lidar and panchromatic images in 1981 and 2021, we investigated the canopy height structure of tropical forests in Menglun sub-reserve in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve of Yunnan Province, and analyzed its relationship with environmental factors by using multiple regression tree (MRT) method. The results showed that forests in the Menglun sub-reserve could be clustered into seven types based on canopy height structures, with tropical rainforest, monsoon evergreen broad-leaved forest, secondary forest, and flood plain forest as the main types. The potential solar radiation, altitude, terrain profile curvature, slope and the brightness value of imageries in 1981 and 2021 were main factors that drove the classification. The tropical seasonal rainforest dominated by Pometia pinnata occupied the largest area in valley and low-land. The monsoon evergreen broad-leaved forest dominated by Castanopsis echinocarpa mainly distributed in the ridge and disturbed areas. The secondary forests had homogeneous canopy surface, which was significantly different from the primary forests. The activities of swidden agriculture about three decades ago had legacy impacts on the physiognomy of secondary forests.

Theoretical researches and practices on the life community of mountain-water-forest-farmland-lake-grassland-sandland mosaic and its protection and restoration have been gradually developed in China, which demands the support of a systematic disciplinary theory. Landscape ecology, as an interdisciplinary science of geography and ecology, can meet such demand thanks to its macroscopic spatial theory and technical system. Here, landscape ecology is taken as the supporting discipline of holistic protection and restoration for mountain-water-forest-farmland-lake-grassland-sandland mosaic. Firstly, we clarified that life community of mountain-water-forest-farmland-lake-grassland-sandland is a heterogeneously mosaic landscape, which bears all the characteristics of landscape and thus follows the principles of landscape ecology. Secondly, we expounded how the basic principles of landscape-ecological construction could be applied to the planning and evaluation of holistic protection and restoration for mountain-water-forest-farmland-lake-grassland-sandland mosaic. Finally, we summarized the new trend of landscape-ecological construction research, listed the theoretical and practical problems to be solved, and discussed how the projects of holistic protection and restoration for the mountain-water-forest-farmland-lake-grassland-sandland mosaic can provide a variety of practices for seeking the solutions. The combination of landscape ecology and practical restoration projects would generate effective solutions to realize sustainable development in terms of ecology, economy, and society in China and even the whole world.

Atmospheric environment in urban built-up area is severely influenced by the surrounding landscape pattern. Understanding the relationship between air pollution and surrounding landscape pattern at small scale has great significance for mitigating air pollution from the perspective of urban construction. The annual average concentrations of NO 2 , SO 2 , PM 2.5 and PM 10 from 266 air pollution monitoring stations in 30 provincial capitals of China in 2017 were chosen as dependent variables. Ten two-dimensional and three-dimensional landscape pattern indices (number of buildings, building aggregation, building density, impervious water ratio, quantitative density of catering, building footprint area, high building ratio, floor area ratio, total building area and building type Shannon diversity index) within the 3 km area around the monitoring stations were used as independent variables. The effects of landscape pattern on the concentration of four air pollutants were analyzed using the boosted regression trees model. The results showed that the concentration of four air pollutants in the central and northern cities were significantly higher than that in the southeast coastal cities and southwest cities. The most important factor affecting the concentrations of NO 2 , SO 2 , PM 2.5 and PM 10 was the impervious ratio, with relative contribution rates of 40.7%, 36.3%, 51.0% and 51.8% respectively. The results of sub-region analysis showed that the most important influencing factor differed in different regions, including the impervious ratio in the East and Central China; the number and density of buildings in South China; the impervious ratio and diversity of building types in North China; the impervious ratio and the number of buildings in Northeast China, the density of buildings in Northwest China. Such differences were mainly caused by climate, topography, urban planning, and other factors.

Quantification of DNA aneuploidy has great potential as a prognostic marker of cervical precancerous lesions. We aim to evaluate the performance of DNA ploidy analysis for the triage of HPV-positive women. 523 HPV-positive women ages 25-64 undergoing HPV and pap cytology testing with valid cervical biopsies in Renji Hospital were enrolled in a prospective observational study from June 2018 to June 2019. The clinical performances of DNA ploidy, with or without HPV16/18 genotyping, were evaluated for all HPV-positive women to detect histologic high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion or worse (HSIL + ). For HSIL + detection, DNA ploidy had statistically higher specificity (83.89%) than Pap cytology (75.50%, P = 0.002) and HPV16/18 genotyping (77.92%, P = 0.023). Although the sensitivity of DNA ploidy (58.57%) remained similar with pap cytology (65.71%, P = 0.461) and HPV16/18 genotyping (55.71%, P = 0.734). A comparable sensitivity (84.29% vs. 84.29%, P = 1.000) and a higher specificity (66.00% vs. 58.94%, P < 0.001) compared with combination with Pap cytology. DNA ploidy triage strategy required fewer colposcopies per detection of HSIL + compared with pap cytologic testing, with a 13.1% (34 of 258) reduction of colposcopies compared with routine triage strategy of HPV screening with Pap cytologic testing. HPV16/18-negative women with negative DNA ploidy results had the lowest risk of HSIL + among HPV-positive women (3.55%). Automated DNA ploidy analysis, alone or in combination with HPV16/18 genotyping, shows the potential as a triage strategy of cervical cancer screening for HPV-positive women. PREVENTION RELEVANCE: Results from this study indicate that DNA ploidy analysis has good performance in early detection of high-grade precancerous and cancerous lesions of the cervix. Knowledge about the special characteristics of HIV-1 envelope (env) glycoproteins in rare individuals developing >90% neutralization breadth in Chinese subtype B' slow progressors may provide insights for vaccine design against local viruses. We performed a cross-sectional analysis on 7 samples. We tested the neutralization breadth and geometric mean ID50 titers (GMTs) of these samples, and divided them into hBCN+ and hBCN- group according to whether their neutralization breadth >90%. We obtained env sequences in these samples through single genome amplification (SGA) assay. By comparing with hBCN-, subtype B chronically infected group (B-SP), and Chinese subtype B group (B-Database), we analyzed the characteristics of the env sequences of hBCN+ group. Longer V1 and V4 regions with more glycosylation sites were found in hBCN+ samples compared to hBCN- samples. Further analysis compared to B-SP and B-Database showed that hBCN+ group exhibited unique extra-long V1 region containing higher proportion of N-glycan sites and additional cysteines., (Copyright © 2020. Water, sediment, and zoobenthos are crucial carriers and storage media for heavy metal migration and transformation. The distribution characteristics of heavy metals in water, sediment, and zoobenthos can reflect their pollution status and potential influences on the health of aquatic ecosystems. On the basis of monitoring data related to Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Mn, Hg, and As in mainstream water, surface sediment, and zoobenthos at eight sections-from Wuhan to Shanghai-of the Changjiang River (also known as the Yangtze River) and historical monitoring data on heavy metal distributions in different environmental media of the Changjiang River since the 1980s, this study undertook systematically analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution dynamics, pollution levels, and corresponding environmental risks related to heavy metals in water, sediment, and biota, and examined the effects of pollution source variations and water and sediment regimes on heavy metal distribution. Heavy metal concentrations in the waters were much lower than the water quality threshold of Grade III of the Chinese Surface Water Environmental Quality Standard (GB3838-2002); the concentrations of different heavy metals were irregularly distributed and varied significantly along the river mainstream; Cu, Cd, Zn, and Pb concentrations in sediment all exceeded their respective critical effect concentrations and exposed the ecosystem to pollution risks; the pollution levels of and ecosystem health risks posed by Zn and Cu in zoobenthos were high, with pollution concentrations ranked as shrimp > snails > crabs. In general, heavy metal concentrations in the three environmental mediums were ranked as sediment > zoobenthos > water. Finally, comparison with historical monitoring data revealed increasing Cd and Hg concentrations, with the average heavy metal concentration in sediment reaching its maximum value in the 2000s in the middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang River, which are subjected to the combined effect of pollutant emissions and changing water and sediment regimes., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declared that they have no conflicts of interest to this work. Production of anti-sperm antibody (ASA) often suffers from autoimmune reaction against sperms in human infertility. The antibodies are measured in both blood and seminal plasma of males. Here, we reported a simple protein biochip methodology that takes advantage of a functionalized self-assembled monolayer modified by N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) and enables identification of anti-sperm antibody in Chinese male infertility. To validate this biochip platform, we immobilized purified sperm protein on the biochip surface and tested a variety of parameters in quality controls for the protein assay, respectively. Then, we analyzed serum samples from 368 patients with infertility and 116 healthy donors by means of this biochip simultaneously. We found that positive rate of serum ASA was 20.92% (77/368) in the cases and 1.72% (2/116) in the controls, respectively. Furthermore, we further corroborated the biochip assay in comparison with ELISA method. We found that both methods were compatible for the detection of serum ASA in the patients. In addition, a follow-up study for natural conception in ASA-positive and ASA-negative patients was conducted. The result showed a significant correlation between serum ASA expression and natural pregnancy rate 6.5% in ASA-positive patients while 18.9% in ASA-negative patients, indicating the potential roles of ASA in naturally reproductive processes., (© 2020 The Author(s).)

The close interactions between abiotic and biotic components create a variety of three-dimensional (3-D) landscape patterns. Landscape ecology, as a discipline of studying patterns and ecological processes, has made rapid progress in the exploration of 3-D space with the improvement of data acquirement ability, such as lidar technology. The real surface landscape can be described considering 3-D data, which improves the consistency between landscape indices and ecological process, and has overcome the shortage of ecological meanings of traditional researches. However, the lack of universality of methods and conclusions still exist due to different study backgrounds. The sensitivities of research results will increase with the expansion from two-dimensional to 3-D scale because of the increasing data quantity and accuracy. How to select and process the suitable scaled data to get more scientific conclusions need to be discussed in the future. The integration of multi-scale, multi-source and a long time series data will be the study trend with data acquisition becoming more convenient. In addition to the dynamic monitoring and prediction studies, the sustainable and ecological restoration application combined with landscape planning and design will be an important research direction.

Purpose: To determine the differences in mean ocular dimensions between urban and rural children and identify possible influencing factors., Methods: This work uses previously published data from the Shandong Children Eye Study, which was based on a random cluster sampling applied to a cross-sectional school-based study design in the rural Guanxian County and Weihai city. All children underwent auto-refractometry and biometry under cycloplegia., Results: The study included 3290 children (aged 9.35 ± 2.93 years), consisting of 888 pairs of boys and 757 pairs of girls matched by sex, age and refractive error (each pair matching one child from urban cohort with one from the rural cohort). Overall urban children were significantly taller and heavier than rural children (t-test; p < 0.001), which was confirmed for all age groups for weight. Urban ocular axial lengths were significantly longer by 0.23 mm compared to the rural population (t-test; p < 0.001), mostly in younger children and boys. Meanwhile, corneal curvatures were flatter in the urban cohort by 0.08 mm (p < 0.001). This association of axial length with urban vs rural region was reduced in magnitude by 69.7% after accounting for height., Conclusions: For the same, matched refractive error, children from urban regions had significantly longer eyes and flatter corneal curvature than rural children. Inhalation exposure to flame retardants used as additives to minimize fire risk and plasticizers is ubiquitous in human daily activities, but has not been adequately assessed. To address this research gap, the present study conducted an assessment of human health risk for four age groups through inhalation exposure to size fractionated particle-bound and gaseous halogenated flame retardants (polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs)) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) at indoor and outdoor environments (school, office, and residence) in three districts of a megacity (Guangzhou, China). Results demonstrated that OPEs were the dominant components among all targets. Indoor daily intakes of PBDEs and OPEs were 13-16 times greater than outdoor levels for all age groups. Gaseous OPEs contributed significantly greater than particle-bound compounds to daily intakes of all target compounds. Based on the different life scenarios, hazard quotient (HQ) and incremental life cancer risk (ILCR) from adults exposure to PBDEs and OPEs in indoor and outdoor settings were the greatest, followed by adolescents, children, and seniors. The estimated HQ and ILCR for all age groups both indoors and outdoors were lower than the safe level (HQ = 1 and ILCR = 10 -6 ), indicating that the potential health risk for local residents in Guangzhou via inhalation exposure to atmospheric halogenated flame retardants and OPEs was low., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
