Water resources management and planning traditionally focus on visible liquid or blue water. However, green water also maintains social development and ecosystem services. Therefore, blue and green water should be incorporated into the watershed management system for evaluating water resources. To analyze the water resources of the Hanjiang River Basin, the SWAT model was set up using long-term and high-precision geographic data. The methods of wavelet analysis and Pearson's correlation analysis were used to explore the influence mechanism of climate and vegetation changes on the blue and green water flow (BWF and GWF) of the main ecosystems in the basin. The results showed that: (1) The spatial–temporal distribution of the BWF and GWF in the main ecosystems of the basin over the past 50 years was uneven. Forest ecosystems and farmland ecosystems have a greater concentration of water resources in the south, while grassland ecosystems have a greater concentration of water resources in the east. (2) Climate dominates the BWF and GWF changes in the main ecosystems of the basin. The BWF and the precipitation change cycle are synergistic, and the GWF and the temperature change cycle are synergistic. (3) The correlation between vegetation and BWF and GWF in the farmland ecosystem is significant. Vegetation affects the hydrological change process of the BWF and GWF at the microscale. The sources of P and N in water-carrying lakes include exogenous input and endogenous release. However, the influence of pollution from different sources on the dynamic distribution of N and P at the sediment-water interface in water-carrying lakes remains unclear. The objectives of this study were to investigate the differences in dynamic distribution characteristics of P compounds and N elements in Lake Jiaogang, a major water-carrying lake in eastern China. Four functional regions with different types of pollutant sources and different kinds of aquatic plants were selected to study the distribution of total P (TP), inorganic P, organic P, ammonium (NH4+–N), and nitrate (NO3−–N). The results revealed that regions with internal-source pollutants contained the highest concentration of TP, Ca–P, and Fe–P with high concentrations. L–P, Al–P, mostly organic P, and soluble reactive phosphorous (SRP), the region with internal-source pollutants were lower than that with the imported-source pollutant. The concentration of dissolved NH4+–N showed high in regions with imported-source pollutants, however, in regions with internal-source pollutants, the dissolved NO3−–N was with the highest concentration. Overall, P from upstream was still dominant in the sediments despite uptake by the aquatic plants. SRP showed high concentration in regions with imported-source pollutants due to the imported pollution and the improved bioavailability by plant root exudates. Feces and feed residues from aquatic livestock breeding resulted in the highest concentration of TN, NH4+–N, and dissolved NO3−–N in the sediments of the region with internal-source pollutants. High concentrations of dissolved NH4+–N were due to the input of N from imported source pollutants. The codling moth Cydia pomonella is a major pest of global significance impacting pome fruits and walnuts. It threatens the apple industry in the Loess Plateau and Bohai Bay in China. Sterile insect technique (SIT) could overcome the limitations set by environmentally compatible area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) approaches such as mating disruption and attract-kill that are difficult to suppress in a high-density pest population, as well as the development of insecticide resistance. In this study, we investigated the effects of X-ray irradiation (183, 366, 549 Gy) on the fecundity and fertility of a laboratory strain of C. pomonella , using a newly developed irradiator, to evaluate the possibility of X-rays as a replacement for Cobalt60 (60Co- γ) and the expanded future role of this approach in codling moth control. Results show that the 8th-day is the optimal age for irradiation of male pupae. The fecundity decreased significantly as the dosage of radiation increased. The mating ratio and mating number were not influenced. However, treated females were sub-sterile at a radiation dose of 183 Gy (20.93%), and were almost 100% sterile at a radiation dose of 366 Gy or higher. Although exposure to a radiation dose of 366 Gy resulted in a significant reduction in the mating competitiveness of male moths, our radiation biology results suggest that this new generation of X-ray irradiator has potential applications in SIT programs for future codling moth control. The water conservation function of ecosystems is a research hot spot in the field of water resources, and it is also an important ecological service function of terrestrial ecosystems and a key point in eco-hydrology research. With the increasing frequency of human activities and climate change, how to reveal the response of ecosystem water conservation function to the changing environment is a scientific problem that needs to be urgently addressed in ecological hydrology research. To reveal the eco-hydrological processes under the changing environment, this study was based on the distributed hydrological model (SWAT) and used water conservation amount (WCA) as an indicator to assess the water conservation capacity of ecosystems. Scenario analysis and statistical analysis were also used to determine the spatial and temporal evolution of the WCAs of farmland, forest, and grassland ecosystems under a changing environment and to further investigate the influence mechanisms of land use change and climate change on the WCA. The findings show that (1) the climate conditions in the Hanjiang watershed have determined the distribution pattern of the ecosystem's WCA. The spatial distribution patterns of the WCA of each ecosystem differed significantly between the dry season and the wet season. Under the combined influence of human activities and climate change, there was no significant change in the spatial distribution pattern of the WCA. (2) Climate change patterns, which were dominated by precipitation and influenced by evapotranspiration, determined the changes in the WCA of ecosystems. In addition, there were significant spatial differences in the response of the watershed WCA under changing environments in the dry season. Differences in land use type and local climate change were the main reasons for such differences. (3) There were differences in the WCA and the response to changing environments among ecosystems. Forest ecosystems had the highest WCA; grassland ecosystems were the most sensitive to land use change. This study can provide a theoretical basis for alleviating the increasingly serious water resource problems in the basin and ensuring water and ecological security in the basin. Harmful cyanobacterial blooms are increasing in frequency and severity, which makes their toxic secondary metabolites of microcystins (MCs) have been widely studied, especially in their distribution and influence factors in different habitats. However, the distribution of MCs on the early growth stage of harmful cyanobacteria and its influence factors and risks are still largely unknown. Thus, in the present study, two reservoirs (Lutian Reservoir and Lake Haitang) with different trophic status in China have been studied weekly from March to May in 2018, when the cyanobacteria communities were just in the early growth stage, to investigate the variation of MCs concentration and the relationships between MCs and environmental parameters. During the investigation, Lutian Reservoir and Lake Haitang were found to be mesotrophic and light eutrophic, respectively. In Lutian Reservoir, the concentration of EMCs (extracellular MCs) was obviously higher than that of IMCs (intracellular MCs) with a mean value of 0.323 and 0.264 μg/L, respectively. Meanwhile, the concentration of EMCs also fluctuated more sharply than that of IMCs. Congeners of IMC-YR and EMC-LR were respectively dominant in total concentrations of IMCs and EMCs. Unsurprisingly, in Lake Haitang, the concentrations of IMC and EMC were both significantly higher than that in Lutian Reservoir with a mean concentration of 0.482 and 0.472 μg/L, respectively. Differently, the concentration of MC-YR was dominant in both IMCs and EMCs, followed by MC-LR. In correlation analysis, the IMCs were significantly and positively correlated with the density and biomass of phytoplankton phyla and potential MCs-producing cyanobacteria and the parameters of water temperature (WT), nutrients, and organic matters. Similar results were also observed for EMCs. While the different variations of MCs in the two reservoirs might be primarily caused by the differences in WT, nutrients (especially phosphorus), organic matters, and the composition of MCs-producing cyanobacteria. In addition, the coexistence of the dominant species of Pseudoanabaena sp., which can produce a taste-and-odor compound of 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), might have a significant impact on the concentration and toxicity of MCs. Background: The fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) invaded Myanmar and China in 2018 and greatly impacted agricultural production and ecosystem balance in these areas. FAW is a migratory insect, but its seasonal migration pattern between the two countries has been largely unknown. From 2019 to 2021, we monitored the seasonal migration of FAW in the China–Myanmar border area using a searchlight trap, assessed the reproductive development status of female migrants and traced the migratory routes by trajectory simulation. Results: FAW moths were trapped by the searchlight trap in Lancang County (Yunnan, China) all year, with obvious seasonal differences in the number caught. There were small‐scale persistent trapping peaks in spring and summer, and obvious peaks in autumn; only a small number of moths were trapped in winter. Examination of the ovaries of female moths collected in different seasons showed that most females had matured, indicating that the moths were migrating and did not take off from the local area. In the migration trajectory simulation, FAW mainly migrated from Myanmar to Southwest China in spring and summer and back to Myanmar in autumn. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that FAW migrates between China and Myanmar according to the monsoon circulation, which will help guide cross‐border regional monitoring and management strategies against this pest. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry. Bacterioplankton play a vital role in maintaining the functions and services of lake ecosystems. Understanding the diversity and distribution patterns of bacterioplankton, particularly the presence of potential pathogenic bacterial communities, is crucial for safeguarding human health. In this study, we employed 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to investigate the diversity and geographic patterns of bacterioplankton communities, as well as potential pathogens, in eight volcanic lakes located in the Arxan UNESCO Global Geopark (in the Greater Khingan Mountains of China). Our results revealed that the bacterial communities primarily comprised Bacteroidota (45.3%), Proteobacteria (33.1%), and Actinobacteria (9.0%) at the phylum level. At the genus level, prominent taxa included Flavobacterium (31.5%), Acinetobacter (11.0%), Chryseobacterium (7.9%), and CL500-29 marine group (5.6%). Among the bacterioplankton, we identified 34 pathogen genera (165 amplicon sequence variants [ASVs]), with Acinetobacter (59.8%), Rahnella (18.3%), Brevundimonas (9.6%), and Pseudomonas (5.8%) being the most dominant. Our findings demonstrated distinct biogeographic patterns in the bacterial communities at the local scale, driven by a combination of dispersal limitation and environmental factors influenced by human activities. Notably, approximately 15.3% of the bacterioplankton reads in the Arxan lakes were identified as potential pathogens, underscoring the potential risks to public health in these popular tourist destinations. This study provides the first comprehensive insight into the diversity of bacterioplankton in mountain lake ecosystems affected by high tourist activity, laying the groundwork for effective control measures against bacterial pathogens. Rapid industrialization and urbanization has created significant air pollution problems that have recently begin to impact the lives and health of human beings in China. This study systematically investigated the spatiotemporal variations and the associated health risks of ambient O3, PM10 and PM2.5 between 2016 and 2019. The relationships between the target air pollutants and meteorological conditions were further analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient method. The results demonstrated that the annual mean concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 experienced a decreasing trend overall, and PM2.5 significantly decreased from 1.54 μg/m3 in 2016 to 1.48 μg/m3 in 2019. In contrast, the annual mean concentrations of O3 were nearly constant during the study period with a slight increasing trend. The pollutants exhibited different seasonal variations and cyclical diurnal variations. The most highest O3 pollution was seen in spring and summer, while spring and winter were the seasons with the most PM10 and PM2.5 pollution. The highest concentrations of O3 appeared in periods of strong solar radiation intensity and photochemical reactions. The highest concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 appeared at commuting time. The pollutant concentrations were significantly affected by meteorological conditions. Finally, the non-carcinogenic risks from exposure to O3, PM10 and PM2.5 were at an acceptable level (HI < 0.96) and O3 accounted for ~50% of the total non-carcinogenic risks. However, PM2.5 posed highly carcinogenic risks (2.5 × 10−4 < CR < 1.6 × 10−1) and O3 exposure showed high potential ecological impacts on vegetation (AOT40: 23.3 ppm-h; W126: 29.0 ppm-h). Swine influenza is an economically important respiratory disease in swine, but it also constantly poses a threat to human health. Therefore, developing rapid, sensitive, and efficient detection methods for swine influenza virus (SIV) is important. By aligning the haemagglutinin (HA) gene sequences of SIVs circulating in China over a 10-year period, an H1 primer-probe set targeting both Eurasian avian-like H1N1 (EA H1N1) and pandemic 2009 H1N1 ((H1N1)pdm09) lineages plus a H3 primer-probe set targeting the prevalent human-like H3N2 (HL H3N2) subtype were designed. Subsequently, a TaqMan-MGB-based duplex one-step real-time RT-PCR (RT-qPCR) assay was established and evaluated. The duplex RT-qPCR has a detection limit of 5 copies/μL of HA plasmid for EA H1N1, (H1N1)pdm09, and HL H3N2 subtype SIVs, and its overall detection sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 91.67% matches that of traditional virus isolation through chicken embryo inoculation using experimentally infected mouse lung samples. The method showed high repeatability both within run and between runs, and there was no cross-reactivity against several other porcine viruses that are commonly circulating in China. Furthermore, the duplex RT-qPCR method revealed a higher prevalence of subtype H1 than subtype H3 in 166 nasal swabs from pigs collected from one slaughterhouse between October and December 2019. The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda, an invasive insect pest native to the Americas, has established populations throughout eastern China. The North China Plain—a key corn‐producing area in East China with a unique topography—was invaded by fall armyworm in 2019 and is seriously threatened by this migratory pest. However, the spatiotemporal extent of the migratory movements of fall armyworm from the North China Plain remains poorly understood. Using an air transport‐based trajectory modeling approach that incorporates flight behavior, we simulated the potential nocturnal migration trajectories of fall armyworm from the North China Plain based on historical meteorological data from June to October of 2015–2019, and examined the night‐time atmospheric conditions associated with their possible flights. The emigration patterns showed monthly variation in the main landing area and common migration direction. The displacement of newly emerged moths from the North China Plain was concentrated in the Northeast China Plain (including Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces) before late summer, after which they were most likely to undertake return flights to the south (especially into Hubei, Anhui and Hunan provinces). This southwest‐northeast aerial migration corridor follows the topography of East China and is affected by the East Asian monsoon. These topographic‐atmospheric conditions have resulted in the North China Plain becoming a key stopover for fall armyworm populations engaging in multigenerational long‐distance migration across East China. These findings contribute to our knowledge of fall armyworm migration and will aid in the implementation of management and control strategies against this highly migratory agricultural pest. Environmental sediment dredging is one of the most common methods for the remediation of contaminated sediments in lakes; however, debate continues as to whether the effectiveness of dredging methods contributes to this phenomenon. To determine sediment resuspension and nutrient release following dredging with a variety of dredging methods, four dredging treatments at wind speeds of 0–5.2 m/s were simulated in this study, namely suction dredging (SD), grab dredging (GD), ideal dredging with no residual sediments (ID), and non-dredging (ND). Field sediments from suction and grab dredging areas (including post-dredged and non-dredged sediments) of Lake Taihu were used to assess the release abilities of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) from the sediment-water interface. The effects of residual sediments on nutrient concentrations in water were also evaluated. The results reveal that inhibition of resuspension of particulate matter and nutrients released through sediment dredging decreases with increasing levels of residual sediment. Total suspended particulate matter content in the mean water columns of ID, SD, and GD under wind-induced disturbance (1.7–5.2 m/s) decreased by 67.5%, 56.8%, and 44.3%, respectively; total nitrogen and total phosphorus in ID (SD) treatments were 19.8% (12.9%) and 24.5% (11.2%) lower than that in ND treatment. However, there were ~ 1.6 and 1.5 times higher SRP and NH4+-N in the GD treatment compared with the ND treatment at the end of the resuspension experiment (0 m/s). A significant increase in the SRP and NH4+-N release rates at the sediment-water interface was also observed in field sediments from a grab dredging area, indicating that GD may pose a short-term risk of nutrient release to the water body. Purpose: High water-level fluctuations (WLFs) usually lead to the periodic drying and rewetting of littoral sediment, proven to influence the transformation of various sediment contaminants. However, details regarding metal bioavailability variations remain unclear. In this study, oxidation–reduction status transition, metal fraction transformation, and the development of the acid volatile sulfide (AVS) and the simultaneously extracted metals (SEM) were investigated to assess the variations of metal bioavailability in the littoral anoxic sediment during the drying–rewetting process. Methods: A series of sediment cores were collected from the littoral area near the mouth of Nanfei River in Lake Chaohu, China, with half of them exposed to dark conditions with an overlying water cover (the control treatment). The other half was dried through the removal of overlying water and then exposed to air and sunlight (the drying treatment). Every 5 days, three of the dried sediment cores were rewetted for 3 days with lake water collected in situ. Various characteristics were analyzed for both the control and drying sediment cores. The drying and rewetting experiment was carried out for 30 days, and the bioavailability of metals was then evaluated thoroughly through data analyses. Results and discussion: The periodic drying and rewetting process led to the oxidation of the anoxic sediment with a pronounced increase in oxygen penetration depth and redox potential, and a decrease in AVS concentrations in the drying treatment after 15 days of experimentation. Significant increases in the values of the ratio of SEM and AVS, the difference between SEM and AVS, and the organic carbon normalized difference between ΣSEM and AVS were retrieved for the drying treatment after process completion. The increase of metal bioavailability to aquatic organisms was consequently predicted, with the most significant concerns noted regarding Cd and Pb due to their transformation to less firmly bound fractions. Conclusions: The periodic drying and rewetting process could increase the bioavailability of metals in littoral anoxic sediment. Many insects such as the crop pest Agrotis ipsilon (black cutworm) migrate seasonally to exploit suitable breeding and winter habitats. The migration of a crop pest also increases the risk of sudden outbreaks. Knowledge about insect migration thus is important for developing a forecasting and warning system for migratory pests. Here we used directional flight devices to study the orientation behavior of A. ipsilon in China during the northward and southward migratory periods and showed that the insects during each period exhibited a common cardinal orientation. Northward migratory moths were oriented at an orientation angle mean of 24.4° and the southward at 205.17°. Expression levels of cryptochrome and magnetoreceptor genes in migratory populations were higher than in a reared population and higher in the southward migratory population than in the northward. These findings provide a physiological and molecular basis for further study of the migratory behavior of the black cutworm and potential control of this pest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pantala flavescens (Fabricius 1798) (Odonata: Libellulidae) is one of the most common species of migratory dragonflies. P. flavescens adults were captured by a searchlight trap on Beihuang Island (BH Island; 38°24'N, 120°55'E) from 2003 to 2016, where there is no freshwater. This inspired our research to analyze the pattern of seasonal migration and population dynamics. Stable hydrogen isotope measurement and the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) were used to simulate the migration pathway of P. flavescens between different breeding habitats. The results showed that there was no significant difference among population numbers of this overseas migration across years (F13, 2161 = 0.85, P = 0.604); however, the numbers were significantly different across months (F5, 2161 = 3.91, P = 0.003). Our geospatial natal assignment model suggested that P. flavescens trapped on BH were originated in different geographical regions and might have three movement strategies: wandering around northern China and north-bound (positive) and south-bound (negative) movements. Among them, the majority were engaged in wandering around northern China. Model simulations suggested that P. flavescens toured around BH. The results contribute to the knowledge of P. flavescens population ecology in a large-scale geographic region and will aid in the prediction and interpretation of insect migration patterns in response to climate change. Antibiotics have become a global public concern due to the widespread presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes. This study investigated the spatial and seasonal variation of conventional water quality parameters and 10 selected antibiotics in rivers inflowing into Taihu Lake. The results showed that total nitrogen, as a pollution driver factor, varied with the seasons, and higher concentrations of pollutants were generally found in the dry season compared with the wet season. For antibiotics, seven of them were detected in surface waters (n = 66) with detection frequencies (DFs) of 1.52–100% and eight antibiotics with DFs of 2.56–100% in sediments (n = 39). Sulfamethoxazole (SMZ, median: 1.47 ng/L), trimethoprim (TMP, median: 0.35 ng/L), and roxithromycin (ROX, median: 0.47 ng/L) with 100% DFs followed by erythromycin (ERY, median: 0.56 ng/L) with a DF of 90.91% accounted for a median percentage of 44.54%, 9.08%, 20.42%, and 13.16% of the ΣABs concentrations in surface waters. In contrast, enrofloxacin (ENR, median: 0.54 ng/g) and ROX (median: 0.29 ng/g) with 100% DFs accounted for a median percentage of 58.21% and 31.71% of the ΣABs concentrations in sediments. Antibiotics in surface waters were mainly related to T, DO, TN and NH 3 –N, but were mainly related to T, pH and TN for antibiotics in sediments. Furthermore, most of the detected antibiotics showed higher concentrations and more species of antibiotics in winter than in summer or autumn. Similarly, the ecological risk values of antibiotics showed higher in winter than in the other two seasons, whereas the overall risk levels were considered acceptable. Heavy metal pollution in lake systems has arisen plenty of threats for public health because of its high toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation. Whereas heavy metals are inextricably linked with bioavailability in pore water and overlying water. Lake Jiaogang is classified as an important water-carrying lake situated in the northern part of the Anhui Province China. In recent years, water quality in this lake declined due to increasing fishery aquaculture, livestock, and tourism. This study aims to bring insight into the interactions of heavy metal elements across sediment-water interface in Lake Jiaogang. Four representative regions were selected, more than ten heavy metals were chosen to quantify by the Community Bureau of Reference, diffusive gradient in thin-film (DGT), and high-resolution pore water equilibrators. The results showed that most heavy metals corresponded with the reducible fraction, acid-soluble fraction, and oxidizable fraction in the Eastern area (sample 3#) and aquaculture area (sample 4#) were higher than that of emergent plant area (sample 1#), and floating plant area (sample 2#). The average fluxes of heavy metals (except Ni and Zn in sample 3#, F value > 0 pg/cm2/d) in the four sampling sites were observed in the lower reaches (F value < 0 pg/cm2/d). The vertical distribution of heavy metals was extracted by DGT, such as As (exclude 2#), Co, Fe, Mn, and Zn (contain 4#) showed an increased content with increasing depth in the four sampling sites. In the pore and overlying water, concentrations of heavy metals from the sample 3# and 4# were higher than those of sample 1# and 2#. Heavy metal pollution in anthropogenic activity areas was higher than those in areas with ecological vegetation, and risk control in this area should be strengthened. With rapid improvements in industrialization and urbanization, antibiotics are now extensively used to prevent and treat human and animal diseases and husbandry and aquaculture. Some research has been conducted to assess the environmental distribution and risk level of antibiotics, but their distribution remains largely uncharacterized. Thus, this study investigated the distribution and abundance of 39 antibiotics belonging to five groups, and their associated risks in surface water around Luoma Lake in the north of Jiangsu province, China. Nineteen antibiotics were detected, at a detection frequency (DF) ranging from 2.27% to 100%. The total antibiotics (ΣABs) concentrations ranged from 34.91 to 825.93 ng/L, with a median concentration of 195.45 ng/L. Among these antibiotics, chlortetracycline (DF: 100%; median: 172.02 ng/L) was the dominant antibiotic, accounting for a median percentage of 91.0% of ΣABs concentrations. Spearman rank correlation method found a significant correlation between clindamycin (DF: 72.7%; median: 2.01 ng/L) and lincomycin (DF: 79.5%; median: 4.58 ng/L). The ecological risk quotient (RQ) values for two out of 44 sampling sites were higher than 1, indicating a high risk; 11.4% of the RQ values fell between 0.1 and 1, indicating a medium risk. Moreover, roxithromycin was found to be the dominant contributor to the ecological risk, accounting for a median of 79.7% of ΣABs. However, the total non-carcinogenic (<6.54 × 10−4) and carcinogenic risks (<1.64 × 10−7) of ΣABs were negligible at the detected concentrations. The fall armyworm (FAW), native to the Americas, has rapidly invaded the whole of Southern China since January 2019. In addition, it can survive and breed in the key maize- and rice- growing area of the Yangtze River Valley. Furthermore, this pest is also likely to continue infiltrating other cropping regions in China, where food security is facing a severe threat. To understand the potential infestation area of newly-invaded FAW from the Yangtze River Valley, we simulated and predicted the possible flight pathways and range of the populations using a numerical trajectory modelling method combining meteorological data and self-powered flight behavior parameters of FAW. Our results indicate that the emigration of the first and second generations of newly-invaded FAW initiating from the Yangtze River Valley started on 20 May 2019 and ended on 30 July 2019. The spread of migratory FAW benefitted from transport on the southerly summer monsoon so that FAW emigrants from the Yangtze River Valley can reach northern China. The maize-cropping areas of Northeastern China, the Korean Peninsula and Japan are at a high risk. Eutrophication pollution seriously threatens the sustainable development of Lake Taihu, China. In order to identify the primary parameters of water quality and the potential pollution sources, the water quality dataset of Lake Taihu (2010–2014) was analyzed with the water quality index (WQI) and multivariate statistical analysis methods. Principle component analysis/factor analysis (PCA/FA) and correlation analysis screened out five significant water quality indicators, i.e. potassium permanganate index (COD Mn), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chloride ion (Cl−) and dissolved oxygen (DO), to represent the whole datasets and evaluate the water quality with WQI. Since northwestern of Lake Taihu was the most heavily polluted area, the parameters of the water quality were analyzed to further explore the potential sources and their contributions. Five potential pollution sources of northwestern lake were identified, and the contribution rate of each pollution source was calculated by the absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) models. In brief, the PMF model was more suitable for pollution source apportionment of the northwestern lake, and the contribution rate was ranked as agricultural non-point source pollution (26.6%) > domestic sewage discharge (23.5%) > industrial wastewater discharge and atmospheric deposition (20.6%) > phytoplankton growth (16.0%) > rainfall or wind disturbance (13.4%). This study might provide useful information for the optimization of water quality management and pollution control strategies of Lake Taihu. • A macroinvertebrate-based multimetric index (MMI) was developed for shallow lakes. • The MMI is comprised of three taxonomic and two functional metrics. • The MMI could capture the influence of eutrophication on lake ecological status. • Functional metrics could complement the information provided by taxonomic metrics. Benthic macroinvertebrates have a long history of use in environmental monitoring. However, macroinvertebrate-based multimetric approach has not been well developed to assessment aquatic ecosystems in China, particularly in lake ecosystems. Eutrophication has been recognized as one of the main pressures affecting shallow lakes in China and elsewhere and it is thus desirable to quantify its effects on ecological integrity of lake ecosystems. Here, 41 subtropical shallow lakes in the Eastern Plain Lake Ecoregion of China were sampled and defined as three groups along eutrophication gradients. A macroinvertebrate-based multimetric index, consisting of three taxonomic metrics (No. of Gastropoda taxa, biological pollution index, and Margalef index) and two functional metrics (functional evenness and relative abundance of deposit feeder) was developed based on the datasets of the 41 lakes, and the results of multiple linear regression showed that the MMI was significantly related to the concentration of TP and macrophyte cover. This finding indicated that the MMI could characterize the influence of eutrophication on lake ecosystems. Our results also indicated that functional metrics could complement the information provided by taxonomic metrics, and we recommend to properly use functional metrics in lake biomonitoring. The macroinvertebrate-based MMI proposed here is the first attempt using biological quality element to assess the ecological status of shallow lakes in the view of eutrophication at the regional scale and could provide complementary information to traditional water quality assessment for the development of management strategies. Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (AMR) is one of commonly used medicinal and edible herbs in China. It is often sulfur-fumigated during post-harvest processing. Carbohydrates are important active components of AMR. However, it is unknown whether sulfur-fumigation would induce changes on carbohydrates. Here, carbohydrates including polysaccharides, oligosaccharides and free monosaccharides were comprehensively analyzed to characterize the quality changes of sulfur-fumigated AMR. Determination of both homemade sulfur-fumigated AMR samples and commercial samples from market revealed that sulfur-fumigation did not affect molecular weight distribution of polysaccharides, but altered polysaccharides content and its ratios of constituent monosaccharides, especially glucose (Glc) and fructose (Fru), as well as the contents of oligosaccharides DP2–10 and free monosaccharide Fru. Moreover, the variations enhanced with the increasing of residual SO 2 content. The potential transformation mechanisms could be due to the hydrolysis of polysaccharides. The research outcomes could provide a chemical basis for the safety and efficacy evaluations of sulfur-fumigated AMR. Emerging contaminants, including antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), and extracellular antibiotic resistance genes (eARGs), have been detected in large numbers in the aquatic environment. The effects of emerging contaminants on bacterial communities in marine sediments are not well studied. In this study, the effects of emerging contaminants (antibiotics, ARB, and eARGs) on the variations of bacterial populations in marine sediments of the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea were investigated. The results showed that the abundance of the host bacterial phylum Probacteria in the marine sediments of the Bohai Sea was the lowest among the four seas after exposure to different antibiotics, ARB, and eARGs. The inputs of exogenous antibiotics and resistance genes significantly affected the community function, resulting in significant differences in community abundance at the genus level. The abundance of Halomonas, Sulfitobacter, and Alcanivorax in the four sea areas displayed noteworthy differences in response to the addition of exogenous antibiotics and eARGs. Surface runoff is a prevalent source via which emerging pollutants (i.e., antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs)) enter marine sediments. However, few studies have investigated the effect of emerging pollutants on the fate of ARGs in marine sediments. Therefore, three systems were established to measure the relative abundances of four common ARGs (i.e., bla TEM , tetA, tetC, and aphA) and the integron-integrase gene (intI1) after exposure to emerging pollutants in marine sediments from the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea in China. The results revealed that antibiotic exposure could decrease the relative abundance of most ARGs (including bla TEM , tetA, and tetC) in these marine sediment samples. The exceptions were the relative abundance of bla TEM in the Bohai Sea marine sediments under ampicillin exposure and tetC in the Yellow Sea marine sediments under tetracycline exposure, which increased significantly. Among marine sediments challenged with ARB, the relative abundance of aphA in all four marine sediments displayed a decreasing trend, whereas the abundances of bla TEM and tetA in the marine sediments from the Bohai Sea and the South China Sea showed an increasing trend. The relative abundance of tetA in the marine sediments from the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea dropped markedly when exposed to extracellular ARG (eARG). Significant changes in bla TEM abundance were observed in the four marine sediments under eARG exposure. Gene aphA abundance showed the same trend as the intI1 abundance. IntI1 showed a decreasing trend under the exposure of antibiotic, ARB, or eARG, apart from the East and the South China Sea marine sediments under ampicillin conditions and the South China Sea marine sediments under RP4 plasmid condition. Studying the historical and future trends of water resources in a basin and explaining the causes of water resource changes is very important, which is key to the management of water resources in a basin. The Hanjiang River Basin is an important water supply source for southwestern Fujian and eastern Guangdong, but it has an uneven spatial and temporal distribution of water resources and an outstanding conflict between supply and demand. In this study, the SWAT model was used to simulate the conditions of the Hanjiang River Basin in the last 50 years, using long time series climate data to study the characteristics and driving mechanism of water resources trend change. The results show that the water resources in the basin have not increased significantly in the last 50 years, but evapotranspiration has increased significantly. The forecast results for water resources in the future are reduced. The water resource changes in the basin have been unevenly distributed in the last 50 years. Climate change has been the main factor in total water resource change in the basin, while the difference in water resource change trends within the basin is caused by land use. The key reason for the decrease in water resources in the Hanjiang River Basin is the significant increase in evapotranspiration due to the significant increase in temperature. If this situation continues, the available water resources in the basin will continue to decline. In fact, many basins around the world are currently likely to have such problems, such as the 2022 summer drought in the Danube River Basin in Europe and the Yangtze River Basin in China, so this article is informative and representative of future water resources management in the basin.

China is embarking on the treatment of rural domestic wastewater, but little information on the characteristics of antibiotics in the rural domestic wastewater is available. As one of the most important new-emerging pollutants, antibiotic has been explicitly proposed to be controlled and treated since the fifth plenary session of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Thus, the occurrence, elimination efficiency and ecological risk of antibiotics, as well as conventional wastewater quality parameters were investigated in influents and effluents from 41 rural domestic wastewater treatment facilities (RD-WWTFs) along the Yangtze River Basin. Results showed that elimination efficiencies of routinely monitored conventional pollutants in 33 RD-WWTFs (accounting for 80.5%) were effective based on conventional wastewater quality parameters. Of 39 target antibiotics selected, 26 ones were detected in the influents and effluents with a detection frequency (DF) between 2.4% and 100%. No significant decrease of antibiotics was observed in the effluents compared with that in the influents except chlortetracyclin (CTE) and tetracycline (TCs). The composition characteristics of antibiotics showed regional differences. Among the investigated antibiotics, ofloxacin (OFX), doxycycline (DOX), roxithromycin (ROX) and lincomycin (LIN) were the predominant, totally accounted for a median percentage of more than 60% of ΣAB concentrations in both influents and effluents. Ecological risk values of ΣABs showed that 11 effluents presented high risks (26.8%), 18 ones had moderate risks (43.9%), and the rest 12 ones showed low risks (29.3%). Moreover, oxytetracycline (OXY), norfloxacin (NOR), LIN and ROX was the dominant contributors to the ecological risk values. Bacterioplankton play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling in rivers. The dynamics of hydrologic conditions in rivers were believed to affect geographic pattern and assembly process of these microorganisms, which have not been widely investigated. In this study, the geographic pattern and assembly process of bacterioplankton community in river networks of the Taihu Basin were systematically explored using amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The results showed that the diversity, structure,  and taxonomic composition of bacterioplankton community all exhibited significant temporal variation during wet, normal, and dry seasons (p<0.01). The neutral community model and null model were applied to reveal the assembly process of bacterioplankton community. The stochastic process and deterministic process both shaped the bacterioplankton community with greater influence of deterministic process. In addition, the abundant and rare bacterioplankton communities were comparatively analyzed. The abundant and rare bacterioplankton communities exhibited similar temporal dynamics (principal coordinates analysis) and spatial variations (distance-decay relationship), indicating similar geographic patterns. Meanwhile, distinct assembly processes were observed for the abundant and rare bacterioplankton communities. Stochastic process (dispersal limitation) shaped the abundant bacterioplankton community while deterministic process (heterogeneous selection) dominated the assembly process of rare bacterioplankton community. Mantel test, redundancy analysis, and correlation analysis together indicated that pH and dissolved oxygen were the major environmental attributes that affected thestructure and assembly process of bacterioplankton community. Background & Aims: Skeletal muscle mass loss is an important aspect of malnutrition and is closely related to adverse clinical outcomes. Computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard for analysing muscle mass, and the skeletal muscle index at the third lumbar vertebra (L3-SMI), measured using CT, is an important indicator to evaluate total skeletal tissue. The aims of this study were to establish reference values for low L3-SMI in Northern China, and to investigate the correlation between L3-SMI and age, and the correlation between L3-SMI and body mass index (BMI)., Methods: This was a multicentre, retrospective, cross-sectional study. A search of abdominal CT imaging reports, using specific keywords, was conducted in four representative cities in northern China, from January 2016 to March 2021. Transverse CT images at the level of the third lumbar vertebra (L3) were identified, exported from the Radiology Information System, and measured using the analysis software SliceOmatic. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 24.0, and significance level was set at p < 0.05. Mean, standard deviations (SD) and percentiles (p5, p10, p25, p50, p75, p90, p95) were used to describe the distribution of L3-SMI in the study population. Low skeletal muscle index was defined as a 5% percentile, or two standard deviations below the mean value of younger healthy individuals (age 20-39 years)., Results: The study included 1787 healthy individuals, with a median age of 45 (25) years (range 20-88 years), and a median BMI of 23.1 (4.1) kg/m 2 (range 18.5-38.7 kg/m 2 ). Among them, 700 healthy individuals (39.1%) were aged 20-39 years. L3-SMI had a negative linear correlation with age, and a positive linear correlation with BMI. The L3-SMI reference values used to define low skeletal muscle mass loss in the Northern Chinese population, using the 5% percentile, were 40.2 cm 2 /m 2 in men, and 31.6 cm 2 /m 2 in women. Using the mean minus two standard deviations protocol, the reference values were 37.9 cm 2 /m 2 and 28.6 cm 2 /m 2 in men and women, respectively., Conclusions: This study analysed the human body composition of 1787 healthy people in four cities in northern China, using CT, and established diagnostic thresholds of skeletal muscle mass depletion based on 700 younger healthy adults, using the 5% percentile and mean-2SD methods. These reference values can be used to diagnose malnutrition in patients and may aide clinicians in predicting prognosis and improving nutritional therapy. Rapid industrialization and urbanization has created significant air pollution problems that have recently begin to impact the lives and health of human beings in China. This study systematically investigated the spatiotemporal variations and the associated health risks of ambient O 3 , PM 10 and PM 2.5 between 2016 and 2019. The relationships between the target air pollutants and meteorological conditions were further analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient method. The results demonstrated that the annual mean concentrations of PM 10 and PM 2.5 experienced a decreasing trend overall, and PM 2.5 significantly decreased from 1.54 μg/m 3 in 2016 to 1.48 μg/m 3 in 2019. In contrast, the annual mean concentrations of O 3 were nearly constant during the study period with a slight increasing trend. The pollutants exhibited different seasonal variations and cyclical diurnal variations. The most highest O 3 pollution was seen in spring and summer, while spring and winter were the seasons with the most PM 10 and PM 2.5 pollution. The highest concentrations of O 3 appeared in periods of strong solar radiation intensity and photochemical reactions. The highest concentrations of PM 10 and PM 2.5 appeared at commuting time. The pollutant concentrations were significantly affected by meteorological conditions. Finally, the non-carcinogenic risks from exposure to O 3 , PM 10 and PM 2.5 were at an acceptable level (HI < 0.96) and O 3 accounted for ~50% of the total non-carcinogenic risks. However, PM 2.5 posed highly carcinogenic risks (2.5 × 10 -4  < CR < 1.6 × 10 -1 ) and O 3 exposure showed high potential ecological impacts on vegetation (AOT40: 23.3 ppm-h; W126: 29.0 ppm-h)., (© 2020. Antibiotics, antimicrobial resistance determinants and human pathogens are new types of environmental pollutants that pose a great threat to human health. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are important sources of novel pollutants; however, few studies have investigated their impact on surrounding natural water. Therefore, this study used a WWTP as the entry point to explore WWTP removal efficiency of antibiotics, antimicrobial resistance determinants and human pathogens and further analyze the impact of WWTP effluent on receiving waters. The investigated WWTP had a good removal effect on fluoroquinolones, macrolides, lincomycin, sulfanilamide, tetracycline and chloramphenicol antibiotics in wastewater, and the concentration of antibiotics in the WWTP's effluent was reduced by >80% relative to the influent. In addition to cmlA, the effect of the WWTP on antimicrobial resistance determinants removal was poor, although the effluent from the WWTP had no effect on the abundance of antimicrobial resistance determinants in the receiving water. However, with the dilution of receiving water, the abundance of antimicrobial resistance determinants gradually decreased. The WWTP could reduce the abundance of bacteria by 1000 times from influent water to effluent water. The major bacteria in the influent and effluent were Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria. After effluent is discharged into receiving water, Cyanobacteria proliferate in large quantities, which can affect the microbial structure in the environment.The abundance of Acinetobacter, which was the predominant potential human pathogen in local wastewater, decreased dramatically after wastewater treatment. We also conducted an ecological risk assessment of the antibiotics identified and found that the ecological risk AZM and CLR posed to aquatic organisms was high. The strict environmental management has been implemented in Taihu Basin to reduce the surface water contamination; however, the effectiveness of the management actions has not been comprehensively evaluated. In the present study, 364 samples were collected during four campaigns over a span of one year from surface water, municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs), industrial wastewater treatment plants (IWWTPs), industrial enterprises, and aquaculture in a typical region in the Upper Taihu Basin. Overall concentration, temporal variation and spatial distribution of 16 PAHs in surface water and various pollution sources were evaluated and the potential pollution sources were identified. Results showed that concentrations of individual PAHs in the surface water ranged from less than the limit of quantification (LOQ) to 949 ng L -1 , indicating a reduction of PAH contamination level after the implementation of environmental management actions. Influent of MWWTPs and wastewater from industrial enterprises exhibited relatively high ∑PAHs concentrations (mean: 880 ng L -1 and 642 ng L -1 , respectively); these samples also exhibited a similar seasonal variation as well as composition of PAH congeners to those found in surface water, and therefore were designated as the main emission sources of PAHs in the studied region. Additional source apportionment using principal component analysis was also conducted to verify the proposed sources and diagnose other pollution sources. Phytoplankton-derived particulate matter (PPM) is the active component of the solid particles in eutrophic shallow lakes. To date, understanding of the degradation characteristics of PPM and the effect of degradation products on nutrient cycling in water are limited. In this study, field observations and simulation experiments were carried out to elaborate the nutrient transformation during phytoplankton-derived particulate matter deposition in the cyanobacterial blooming area of Lake Taihu. Results showed that the deposition of the PPM was strongly facilitated by the cyanobacterial bloom and the sediment resuspension. The main variation characteristics of phosphorus (P) species in PPM are shown in the increase of Ortho-P and the decrease of biodegradable phosphorus (Poly-P, DNA-P) during the deposition of PPM. The degradation of the PPM resulted in the release of dissolved nitrogen (N) and P to the water body. The conversion of easily degradable particulate N and P in the PPM to ammonium nitrogen (NH 3 -N) and soluble reactive phosphorus were believed to be responsible for this phenomenon. The cycling of nutrients and the cyanobacterial bloom status might therefore be altered because of the deposition and degradation of PPM. More considerations should be given on this process in future works.

In this study, the generalized additive model (GAM) was used to analyze seasonal monitoring data from Lake Taihu, collected from 2010 to 2014, with the aim to explore the correlation between chlorophyll a (Chla) and other water quality parameters. The selected optimal multivariable GAM could effectively explain the concentration variation of Chla occurring during each season, and the interpretation degree followed the order: summer > autumn > spring > winter. The fitting results indicated that the concentration variation of Chla could reflect that of biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand in all seasons. In addition, the total phosphorus showed strong ability to explain the concentration change of Chla in spring and summer, as the growth of algae would be affected when the concentration of phosphorus shifted high or low. Nitrogen showed strong ability to explain the variations in Chla concentration in autumn. The conclusions of the optimal multivariable GAM could provide decision basis for the eutrophication control. In other words, the prevention of eutrophication outbreaks could be carried out via the targeted control of key water pollutants. Colloidal particles in lake waters interact inevitably with cyanobacterial extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), which will change their behavior and fate. Quantitative prediction of the effects of cyanobacterial EPS on colloidal behavior is difficult due to its variability and heterogeneity. To explore the effects of molecular weight (MW) fractions and chemical properties of cyanobacterial EPS on aggregation kinetics of colloidal particles, time-series cyanobacterial samples were collected in Lake Taihu, China, from April to November (during blooming and maintenance period), with the bulk EPS matrix fractionating into low MW (LMW-, <1 nm) and high MW (HMW-, 1 nm-0.45 μm) fractions. HMW-EPS was generally characterized with higher absorbance and predominant distribution of protein-like substances, while LMW-EPS contained mainly the humic- and fulvic-like substances. The absorbance, molecular size, and humification degree for each MW fraction consistently increased from April to November, showing obvious temporal variations from blooming period to maintenance period. As for the MW-dependent aggregation behaviors, the HMW-EPS provided better stability against aggregation than the LMW-EPS, and the bulk EPS matrix that consisted of HMW- and LMW-fractions exhibited the effects intermediate between that of each fraction alone. Regardless of MW fractions, the effects of EPS-induced stability enhancement were more evident in maintenance period than in blooming period. Further analysis showed that the colloidal stability was correlated positively with SUVA 254 (R 2  = 0.82-0.93) but negatively with Slope 275-295 (R 2  = 0.53-0.91) of UV-Vis absorption spectra, indicating that aromaticity and MWs were two critical parameters controlling colloidal aggregation. Therefore, cyanobacterial EPS can exhibit variable effects on colloidal stability, and characterization of MW distribution is strongly required in predicating the behavior and fate of colloidal particles in water environments., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. To illustrate the contribution of phytoplankton-derived particulate organic matter (PPOM) to endogenous phosphorus (P) cycling and its effects on cyanobacteria blooms, PPOM characteristics, the degradation mechanism, and the growth of P-deficient Microcystis aeruginosa were studied in Lake Taihu. Results showed that PPOM is the most important P pool in the water column during cyanobacteria bloom, accounting for more than 80% of the total P (TP) in the water. During PPOM degradation, the particulate orthophosphate (Ortho-P) is the main species of P release from PPOM in the early degradation stage. The variations of polyphosphate (Poly-P) and phosphodiesters (Diester-P) contents were most significant, which were degraded completely within four days and eight days. Cell density and growth rate of M. aeruginosa using PPOM as P source were similar to those growing on Na 2 HPO 4 . The above results show that P in PPOM can be converted into available P by degradation, thus promoting the growth of M. aeruginosa . Therefore, the contribution of P release from PPOM degradation needs to be paid attention to in lake eutrophication control in the future.

To analyze genetic characters of migratory dragonflies, we used 10 microsatellite markers and a partial sequence of the mitochondrial gene Cytb to investigate genetic diversity and demographic history among 19 populations of P. flavescens in eastern the monsoon region of China. In a Bayesian clustering analysis of the microsatellite data, three distinct clades were present, and each population consisted of a mixture of individuals from the three clusters. An AMOVA of the data from both the microsatellite loci and Cytb revealed that genetic variation was mainly within each population. For the 543 individuals from the 19 regions, 77 unique haplotypes were obtained by DnaSP 4.0, and a median-joining network showed no obvious geographical pattern and displayed high gene flow and minimal population genetic structure among the 19 populations. According to a Mantel test, there was no significant association between genetic distance and geographic distribution and no isolation by distance. Mismatch distribution and neutrality tests showed no demographic expansion for the 19 populations. Microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA data suggested there was high gene flow and low differentiation among the populations. These results will help provide valuable information to study the migratory route of insects, especially important agricultural pests.

Our study illustrated the ecological conditions in the rivers of Lake Taihu Basin (LTB) using an index of biotic integrity based on phytoplankton (P-IBI), and its performance was compared with the previously developed water quality index (WQI). Samples were collected seasonally at 96 sites covering the major rivers from September 2014 to January 2016. Three critical ecological indices, i.e., phytoplankton density, chlorophyll a (chl a), and Menhinick, were selected from a pool of 22 candidate indices mainly according to the correlations among indices and environmental parameters. The results indicated that the ecological status of LTB based on P-IBI was significantly different at spatial (especially between Tiaoxi and the other 5 river systems) and seasonal scales. Furthermore, the proposed P-IBI effectively identified the major environmental parameters (total nitrogen, ammonium, total phosphorus, and permanganate index) associated with each level (bad, low, and moderate). Moreover, the P-IBI was closely and positively correlated with the WQI at the spatial scale regardless of season. However, the ecological conditions were significantly worse according to the P-IBI at both the spatial (P < 0.001) and seasonal scales (P values of 0.018 in winter and < 0.001 in other seasons, respectively), and the seasonal distribution pattern differed between the two methods. Our study suggests that the P-IBI provides an essential supplement for the assessment of ecological conditions of rivers and that the selected critical indices (phytoplankton density, chl a, and Menhinick) are suitable for river ecosystems. Additionally, compared with WQI, the water quality condition was generally worse when using P-IBI, and this phenomenon requires further attention during water quality assessments, as well as different seasonal distribution patterns., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Colloidal particles are omnipresent in lake sediments and substantially influence the retention, transportation, and fate of contaminants in lake ecosystems. In this study, the abundance, chemical composition and adsorption behavior of sedimentary colloids (including total and inorganic colloids) from different ecological regions, were for the first time investigated via ultrasonic extraction, spectral analysis and batch absorption experiments. Results showed that the extraction efficiencies of sedimentary colloids showed an ultrasonic energy-dependent enhancement, and the algae-dominated area contained comparable colloidal abundance with the macrophyte-dominated area (i.e., 198.5 vs. 183.3 mg/g). Despite the different ecosystems, these sedimentary colloids usually had a wide size distribution of 30-200 nm, and were characterized with montmorillonite-, kaolin-, volkonskoite-, and quartz-rich chemical compositions. Batch experiment showed that the total pristine colloids exhibited higher adsorption capacity for Pb(II) than the inorganic colloids both for the macrophyte- and algae-dominated sediments, and the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm, irrespective of different colloidal types. Thus, sedimentary colloids can immobilize the heavy metals in sediment and decrease their release into the water column, which can be considered as a sink for contaminants. Spatial and seasonal variations of particulate phosphorus (PP) in a large shallow, eutrophic Lake Taihu with different ecotypes (including a phytoplankton-dominated zone, lake center zone, estuary zone and macrophyte-dominated zone) were investigated. The results showed that particulate organic phosphorus (POP) was the dominant form of PP (>88.0%). The concentration of POP showed higher levels in the bloom-sensitive northwestern zone (phytoplankton-dominated zone and estuary zone) during warm seasons, phytoplankton blooms and input of exogenous particulate matter were the main sources of POP in the lake water. Based on 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance ( 31 P NMR) analysis, orthophosphate (Ortho-P) was the dominant molecular species of PP and positively correlated with soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) ( p < 0.01). This suggested that the release of Ortho-P from suspended particulate matter (SPM) was the main source of SRP in the lake water. Pyrophosphate (Pyro-P), which is regarded as a highly labile species of P compounds, represented a large fraction of PP, and its significant positive correlations with chlorophyll a (Chl a ), indicated that the concentration of Pyro-P could be used as an important indicator for the degree of eutrophication of Lake Taihu. These results proved that PP in lake water was a significant factor supporting lake eutrophication and must be controlled.
