An objective normalization strategy is essential in any evolutionary multiobjective or many-objective optimization (EMO or EMaO) algorithm, due to the distance calculations between objective vectors required to compute diversity and convergence of population members. For the decomposition-based EMO/EMaO algorithms involving the Penalty Boundary Intersection (PBI) metric, normalization is an important matter due to the computation of two distance metrics. In this article, we make a theoretical analysis of the effect of instabilities in the normalization process on the performance of PBI-based MOEA/D and a proposed PBI-based NSGA-III procedure. Although the effect is well recognized in the literature, few theoretical studies have been done so far to understand its true nature and the choice of a suitable penalty parameter value for an arbitrary problem. The developed theoretical results have been corroborated with extensive experimental results on three to 15-objective convex and non-convex instances of DTLZ and WFG problems. Urban areas demonstrate great influence on precipitation, yet the spatial clustering features of precipitation are still unclear over urban areas. This study quantitatively examines the spatial clustering of precipitation intensity in 130 urban-affected regions over mainland China during 2008-15 using a high-resolution merged precipitation product. Results show that the spatial heterogeneity patterns display diverse distribution and vary with precipitation intensity and urban sizes. Extreme and heavy precipitation has higher spatial heterogeneity than light precipitation over the urban-affected regions of grade 1 cities, and their mean Moran's I are 0.49, 0.47, and 0.37 for the intensity percentiles of ≥95%, 75%-95%, and < 75%, respectively. The urban signatures in the spatial clustering of precipitation extremes are observed in 37 cities (28%),mainly occurring in the Haihe River basin, the Yangtze River basin, and the Pearl River basin. The spatial clustering patterns of precipitation extremes are affected by the local dominant synoptic conditions, such as the heavy storms of convective precipitation in Beijing (Moran's I = 0.47) and the cold frontal system in the Pearl River delta (Moran's I = 0.78), resulting in large regional variability. The role of urban environments for the spatial clustering is more evident in wetter conditions [e.g., relative humidity (RH) > 75% over Beijing and RH > 85% over the Pearl River delta] and warmer conditions (T > 258C over Beijing and T > 288C over the Pearl River delta). This study highlights the urban modification on the spatial clustering of some precipitation extremes, and calls for precautions and adaptation strategies to mitigate the adverse effect of the highly clustered extreme rainfall events. Background: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome is the basic unit of TCM treatment, which help clinicians assess the disease progression and treatment preoperative of tumor patients. However, the prognostic significance of TCM syndrome is still unclear. This study aims to detect the differences in overall survival between different TCM syndrome and further develop a new nomogram with TCM syndrome for predicting overall survival in colorectal cancer. Methods: A total of 324 patients with colorectal cancer were enrolled and categorized into three groups based on TCM syndrome: deficiency, excess, and deficiency-excess. The prognosis of colorectal cancer patients with different TCM syndromes was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression analysis. Results: The proportion of advanced stage and lymph metastasis in the patients with deficiency syndrome was higher, and the overall survival was shorter than other syndromes. Meanwhile, the TCM syndrome (P < 0.001), tumor invasion depth (P < 0.001), lymph metastasis (P = 0.018), organic metastasis (P = 0.005) and tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage (P = 0.029) were the independent prognostic factor. Then, a new nomogram with TCM syndrome was established and assessed. 324 colorectal cancer patients were randomly divided into training (n = 215) and validation cohorts (n = 109). A nomogram incorporating preoperative TCM syndrome, gender, age, T, N, and M status was developed, which had good discrimination and calibration. Conclusion: Taken together, our results indicated that TCM syndrome could assess the prognosis of colorectal cancer. INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and mortality rates are increasing in adults aged <50 years. Young-onset adenoma (YOA)--adenoma detected in adults younger than 50 years--may signify increased CRC risk, but this association has not been widely studied. Our aim was to compare the risk of incident and fatal CRC in adults aged <50 years with YOA diagnosis compared with those with a normal colonoscopy. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study of US Veterans aged 18-49 years who received colonoscopy between 2005 and 2016. The primary exposure of interest was YOA. Primary outcomes included incident and fatal CRC. We used Kaplan-Meier curves to calculate cumulative incident and fatal CRC risk and Cox models to examine relative CRC risk. RESULTS: The study cohort included 54,284 Veterans aged <50 years exposed to colonoscopy, among whom 13% (n 5 7,233) had YOA at start of follow-up. Cumulative 10-year CRC incidence was 0.11% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.00%-0.27%) after any adenoma diagnosis, 0.18% (95% CI: 0.02%-0.53%) after advanced YOA diagnosis, 0.10% (95% CI: 0.00%-0.28%) after nonadvanced adenoma diagnosis, and 0.06% (95% CI: 0.02%-0.09%) after normal colonoscopy. Veterans with advanced adenoma had 8-fold greater incident CRC risk than those with normal colonoscopy (hazard ratio: 8.0; 95% CI: 1.8-35.6). Across groups, no differences in fatal CRC risk were observed. DISCUSSION: Young-onset advanced adenoma diagnosis was associated with 8-fold increased incident CRC risk compared with normal colonoscopy. However, cumulative CRC incidence and mortality at 10 years among individuals with either young onset non-advanced or advanced adenoma diagnosis were both relatively low. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: To analyze the expression of cluster of differentiation 80 (CD80)/cluster of differentiation 163 (CD163) in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and their correlation with the syndrome of traditional Chinese medicine, pathology and prognosis. Methods: (1) The correlation between the pathological characteristics of 232 postoperative CRC patients and the deficiency and excess syndromes of traditional Chinese medicine was analyzed using the chi-square test, Spearman’s correlation, and Cox regression methods. (2) Immunohistochemistry and quantitative real-time PCR were used to detect the expression of CD80 and CD163 in cancer and para cancer tissues of CRC patients. (3) The relationships between the changes of CD80 and CD163 and the prognosis of CRC patients with deficiency syndrome. Patient survival were analyzed using cardinality and Cox regression proportional-hazards model regression. Results: (1) The degree of differentiation and tumor node metastasis stage of CRC were statistically different between patients with deficiency and excess syndromes (P < 0.05); carcinoembryonic antigen and carbohydrate antigen19-9were highly expressed in the excess syndrome group, and both were significantly correlated with the distribution of traditional Chinese medicine syndromes (P <0.001); deficiency and excess syndromes, and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 were all independent factors affecting the postoperative survival of CRC patients. (2) The distribution of post-operative survival in CRC patients was significantly correlated with the distribution of the disease type (P<0.001). (3) The expression levels of CD163 protein and message RNA were significantly higher in CRC cancer tissues than in paraneoplastic tissues (P <0.001); whereas the expression of CD80 was significantly higher in paraneoplastic tissues than in cancer tissues(P < 0.001). (4) The expression levels of CD80/CD163 were significantly different indifferent parts of the tissues of patients with deficiency and excess syndromes (P <0.001). (5) CRC patients with high CD80 expression and low CD163 expression had longer survival cycles (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The malignant progression of CRC patients with deficiency syndrome is faster than that with excess syndrome. The correlation between deficiency and excess syndromes and the expression levels of CD80 and CD163 could be an independent risk factor for the survival prognosis of patients with CRC. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression posttranscriptionally and are implicated in viral replication and host tropism. miRNAs can impact the viruses either by directly interacting with the viral genome or modulating host factors. Although many miRNAs have predicted binding sites in the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral RNA genome, little experimental validation has been done. We first identified 492 miRNAs that have binding site(s) on the spike (S) viral RNA by a bioinformatics prediction. We then validated the selected 39 miRNAs by examining S-protein levels after coexpressing the S-protein and a miRNA into the cells. Seven miRNAs were found to reduce the S-protein levels by more than 50%. Among them, miR-15a, miR-153, miR-298, miR-508, miR-1909, and miR-3130 also significantly reduced SARS-CoV-2 viral replication. SARS-CoV-2 infection decreased the expression levels of miR-298, miR-497, miR-508, miR-1909, and miR-3130, but had no significant effects on miR-15a and miR-153 levels. Intriguingly, the targeting sequences of these miRNAs on the S viral RNA showed sequence conservation among the variants of concern. Our results suggest that these miRNAs elicit effective antiviral defense against SARS-CoV-2 by modulating S-protein expression and are likely targeting all the variants. Thus, the data signify the therapeutic potential of miRNA-based therapy for SARS-CoV-2 infections. Disorders of consciousness (DOC) is a state in which consciousness is affected by brain injuries, leading to dysfunction in vigilance, awareness, and behavior. DOC encompasses coma, vegetative state, and minimally conscious state based on neurobehavioral function. Currently, DOC is one of the most common neurological disorders with a rapidly increasing incidence worldwide. Therefore, DOC not only impacts the lives of individuals and their families but is also becoming a serious public health threat. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can stimulate electrical activity using a pulsed magnetic field in the brain, with great value in the treatment of chronic pain, neurological diseases, and mental illnesses. However, the clinical application of rTMS in patients with DOC is debatable. Herein, we report the recent main findings of the clinical therapeutics of rTMS for DOC, including its efficacy and possible mechanisms. In addition, we discuss the potential key parameters (timing, location, frequency, strength, and secession of rTMS applications) that affect the therapeutic efficiency of rTMS in patients with DOC. Intestinal macrophages are essential players in intestinal inflammation and intestinal immune homeostasis. Intestinal macrophages have the ability to polarize into two distinct phenotypes based on various environmental signals. These phenotypes include the typically activated pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype and the alternatively activated anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. Under normal circumstances, intestinal macrophages prevent inflammatory damage to the gut. However, when genetic and environmental factors influence the polarization of intestinal macrophages, it can lead to an imbalance in M1/M2 macrophage activation and subsequently an imbalance in the control of intestinal inflammation. It transforms physiological inflammation into pathological intestinal damage. In patients with ulcerative colitis-associated cancer (UC-CRC), intestinal inflammatory disorders are closely associated with intestinal M1/M2 macrophage polarization imbalance. Consequently, restoring the polarization equilibrium of M1/M2 macrophages might be an effective measure to prevent and treat UC-CRC. This paper aims to examine the clinical evidence of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of UC-CRC, the pivotal role of macrophage polarization in UC-CRC pathogenesis, and the potential mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine in regulating macrophage polarization to treat UC-CRC. Background: COVID-19, caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2, is considered the most threatening respiratory infection in the world, with over 40 million people infected and over 0.934 million related deaths reported worldwide. It is speculated that epidemiological and clinical features of COVID-19 may differ across countries or continents. Genomic comparison of 48,635 SARS-CoV-2 genomes has shown that the average number of mutations per sample was 7.23, and most SARS-CoV-2 strains belong to one of 3 clades characterized by geographic and genomic specificity: Europe, Asia, and North America. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the genomes of SARS-CoV-2 strains isolated from Italy, Sweden, and Congo, that is, 3 different countries in the same meridian (longitude) but with different climate conditions, and from Brazil (as an outgroup country), to analyze similarities or differences in patterns of possible evolutionary pressure signatures in their genomes. Methods: We obtained data from the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data repository by sampling all genomes available on that date. Using HyPhy, we achieved the recombination analysis by genetic algorithm recombination detection method, trimming, removal of the stop codons, and phylogenetic tree and mixed effects model of evolution analyses. We also performed secondary structure prediction analysis for both sequences (mutated and wild-type) and "disorder" and "transmembrane" analyses of the protein. We analyzed both protein structures with an ab initio approach to predict their ontologies and 3D structures. Results: Evolutionary analysis revealed that codon 9628 is under episodic selective pressure for all SARS-CoV-2 strains isolated from the 4 countries, suggesting it is a key site for virus evolution. Codon 9628 encodes the P0DTD3 (Y14_SARS2) uncharacterized protein 14. Further investigation showed that the codon mutation was responsible for helical modification in the secondary structure. The codon was positioned in the more ordered region of the gene (41-59) and near to the area acting as the transmembrane (54-67), suggesting its involvement in the attachment phase of the virus. The predicted protein structures of both wild-type and mutated P0DTD3 confirmed the importance of the codon to define the protein structure. Moreover, ontological analysis of the protein emphasized that the mutation enhances the binding probability. Conclusions: Our results suggest that RNA secondary structure may be affected and, consequently, the protein product changes T (threonine) to G (glycine) in position 50 of the protein. This position is located close to the predicted transmembrane region. Mutation analysis revealed that the change from G (glycine) to D (aspartic acid) may confer a new function to the protein--binding activity, which in turn may be responsible for attaching the virus to human eukaryotic cells. Mammalian Asn-linked glycans are extensively processed as they transit the secretory pathway to generate diverse glycans on cell surface and secreted glycoproteins. Additional modification of the glycan core by a-1,6-fucose addition to the innermost GlcNAc residue (core fucosylation) is catalyzed by an a-1,6-fucosyltransferase (FUT8). The importance of core fucosylation can be seen in the complex pathological phenotypes of FUT8 null mice, which display defects in cellular signaling, development, and subsequent neonatal lethality. Elevated core fucosylation has also been identified in several human cancers. However, the structural basis for FUT8 substrate specificity remains unknown. Here, using various crystal structures of FUT8 in complex with a donor substrate analog, and with four distinct glycan acceptors, we identify the molecular basis for FUT8 specificity and activity. The ordering of three active site loops corresponds to an increased occupancy for bound GDP, suggesting an induced-fit folding of the donor-binding subsite. Structures of the various acceptor complexes were compared with kinetic data on FUT8 active site mutants and with specificity data from a library of glycan acceptors to reveal how binding site complementarity and steric hindrance can tune substrate affinity. The FUT8 structure was also compared with other known fucosyltransferases to identify conserved and divergent structural features for donor and acceptor recognition and catalysis. These data provide insights into the evolution of modular templates for donor and acceptor recognition among GT-B fold glycosyltransferases in the synthesis of diverse glycan structures in biological systems. In July 2016, a virus strain (JCC12-12) was isolated from Culicoides collected in Jiangcheng County, Yunnan Province, China. The JCC12-12 virus was sequenced using next-generation sequencing; a 9294-nt-long sequence with a G+C content of 35.63% was obtained by assembly and splicing. Phylogenetic analysis of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase domain (RdRP) amino acid sequence showed that JCC12-12 virus shared the evolutionary branch of the Fort Crockett virus strain 22503a, isolated from Paracoccus marginatus in the United States; these viruses shared 87.5% homology, while the nucleotide homology of the JCC12-12 virus with other negeviruses was <50.8%, suggesting that JCC12-12 virus isolated from Culicoides was Fort Crockett virus. While classic reforming processes rely on heat and chemical equilibrium, plasma-based reforming processes possess the ability to induce non-equilibrium and reactive chemistry at low temperatures using high energy electrons. To better understand the distinctive roles of both electron-induced chemistry and thermochemistry during plasma-assisted fuel reforming, we previously developed a temperature-controlled dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor, which controlled the gas temperature and the electron temperature independently. Here, we investigate plasma-assisted steam reforming of methane using the temperature-controlled DBD reactor and electron-kinetics calculations. We investigated the individual effects of the determining factors for electron-induced chemistry (i.e. reduced electric field intensity and discharge power) and for thermochemistry (i.e. background gas temperature) by varying the discharge power, gas temperature, and pressure inside the reactor. As a result, we found that both the electron-induced chemistry and thermochemistry governed the reactant conversions. Thermochemistry positively affected the methane conversion in particular, but negatively affected the water conversion as the gas temperature increased. The electron-induced chemistry weakly affected the product distribution, while the background temperature (thermochemistry) strongly influenced the product selectivity and composition by altering the chemical pathways involving the plasma-generated reactive species at the given temperature. This Article reviews what is known from the field of criminology about the nature of crime patterns in general, focusing particularly on violence, violent people, and how violence manifests in the lives of individuals who commit crime. Broad consensus exists in the research community that offending careers of individuals who commit crimes vary substantially from person to person. Most people tend to commit non-violent crimes and while many violent offenders recidivate after being released from prison, the majority do not. Moreover, the type of violent crime committed--expressive versus instrumental--may be an important distinction. We draw several conclusions from the research on violence and violent recidivism and what it can mean for policy makers and their decision-making. Armed with accurate information about violent offending, policymakers and practitioners may be able to propose appropriate policy changes and make more informed decisions about the likelihood of violent offending and recidivism among persons who commit crimes. Background: Studying multiple microRNAs (miRNAs) synergism in gene regulation could help to understand the regulatory mechanisms of complicated human diseases caused by miRNAs. Several existing methods have been presented to infer miRNA synergism. Most of the current methods assume that miRNAs with shared targets at the sequence level are working synergistically. However, it is unclear if miRNAs with shared targets are working in concert to regulate the targets or they individually regulate the targets at different time points or different biological processes. A standard method to test the synergistic activities is to knock-down multiple miRNAs at the same time and measure the changes in the target genes. However, this approach may not be practical as we would have too many sets of miRNAs to test. Results: n this paper, we present a novel framework called miRsyn for inferring miRNA synergism by using a causal inference method that mimics the multiple-intervention experiments, e.g. knocking-down multiple miRNAs, with observational data. Our results show that several miRNA-miRNA pairs that have shared targets at the sequence level are not working synergistically at the expression level. Moreover, the identified miRNA synergistic network is small-world and biologically meaningful, and a number of miRNA synergistic modules are significantly enriched in breast cancer. Our further analyses also reveal that most of synergistic miRNAmiRNA pairs show the same expression patterns. The comparison results indicate that the proposed multiple-intervention causal inference method performs better than the single-intervention causal inference method in identifying miRNA synergistic network. Conclusions: Taken together, the results imply that miRsyn is a promising framework for identifying miRNA synergism, and it could enhance the understanding of miRNA synergism in breast cancer. Exploring efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a challenging task in sustainable energy systems. Herein, facile and novel three dimensional (3D) needle grass-like CoHPO4·H2O on Ni foam (CoHPO/NF) has been prepared as an effective and robust OER electrocatalyst for the first time. The unique 3D topological structure of CoHPO exposes more electrocatalytic active sites and facilitates mass transport. The coordinated HPO42− anions work as OH− traps to synergistically enhance the process of the OER. Because of these advantages, it exhibits an extraordinary OER performance with a low overpotential of only 350 mV at 50 mA cm−2. Notably, it also exhibits excellent long-term stability. According to the theoretical calculations, the electron structure of the Co was significantly influenced by the coupled HPO42− species, which leads to superior activity for the OER. NbC ceramic surface-reinforced steel matrix composites were prepared by an in-situ reaction method at different temperatures (1,050 °C, 1,100 °C and 1,150 °C) for different times (1 h, 2 h and 3 h). The phase constitution, microstructure and fracture morphology of NbC ceramic surface-reinforced steel matrix composites were analyzed by XRD, SEM and EDS, and the effects of the in-situ reaction temperature and time on the mechanical properties were systematically studied. The results indicate that the NbC reinforcement layer is formed through the reaction between Nb atoms and carbon atoms diffused from the steel matrix to the Nb plate. The thickness of this reinforcement layer increases as the reaction time prolongs. Additionally, an increase in reaction temperature results in a thicker reinforcement layer, although the rate of increase gradually decreases. The relationship among the thickness of the NbC reinforcement layer, the reaction time and temperature was established by data fitting. The optimal tensile performance is achieved at 1,100 °C for 1 h, with a tensile strength of 228 MPa. It is also found that the defects between the reinforcement layer and the steel matrix are related to reaction temperature. At 1,100 °C, these defects are minimal. Fracture mostly occurs in the NbC reinforced layer of the composites, and the fracture mode is characterized by typical intergranular brittle fracture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The solubility and bubble formation of hydrogen (H) in tungsten (W) are crucial factors for the application of W as a plasma-facing component under a fusion environment, but the data and mechanism are presently scattered, indicating some important factors might be neglected. High-energy neutron-irradiated W inevitably causes a local strain, which may change the solubility of H in W. Here, we performed first-principles calculations to predict the H solution behaviors under isotropic strain combined with temperature effect in W and found that the H solubility in interstitial lattice can be promoted/impeded by isotropic tensile/compressive strain over the temperature range 300–1800 K. The calculated H solubility presents good agreement with the experiment. Together, our previous results of anisotropic strain, except for isotropic compression, both isotropic tension and anisotropic tension/compression enhance H solution so as to reveal an important physical implication for H accumulation and bubble formation in W: strain can enhance H solubility, resulting in the preliminary nucleation of H bubble that further causes the local strain of W lattice around H bubble, which in turn improves the H solubility at the strained region that promotes continuous growth of the H bubble via a chain-reaction effect in W. We present a new method for achieving chemical reactions induced by plasmas with liquids—an in-liquid arc plasma jet system—designed to have a few advantages over the existing methods. High-speed imaging and optical emission spectroscopy were adopted to highlight the physical aspects of the in-liquid arc plasma jet system, and the feasibility of the system was investigated in a wastewater treatment case with phenol as the model contaminant. We found that the specific energy input is a reasonable parameter by which to characterize the overall process. The phenol removal reaction could be modeled as a pseudo-first-order reaction, and the reaction constant became smaller as the phenol concentration increased. However, complete decomposition of the phenol into water and carbon dioxide required very high energy because the final intermediate, oxalic acid, is relatively stable. Detailed chemical and physical analyses, including byproducts, ions, solution acidity, and conductivity, were conducted to evaluate this new method for use in the appropriate applications. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are single stranded endogenous molecules composed of only 18–24 nucleotides which are critical for gene expression regulating the translation of messenger RNAs. Conventional methods based on enzyme-assisted nucleic acid amplification techniques have many problems, such as easy contamination, high cost, susceptibility to false amplification, and tendency to have sequence mismatches. Here we report a rapid, ratiometric, enzyme-free, sensitive, and highly selective single-step miRNA detection using three-way junction assembled (or self-assembled) FRET probes. The developed strategy can be operated within the linear range from subnanomolar to hundred nanomolar concentrations of miRNAs. In comparison with the traditional approaches, our method showed high sensitivity for the miRNA detection and extreme selectivity for the efficient discrimination of single-base mismatches. The results reveal that the strategy paved a new avenue for the design of novel highly specific probes applicable in diagnostics and potentially in microscopic imaging of miRNAs in real biological environments. We have carried out systematic first-principles total energy and vibration spectrum calculations to investigate the finite-temperature H dissolution behaviors in tungsten and molybdenum, which are considered promising candidates for the first wall in nuclear fusion reactors. The temperature effect is considered by the lattice expansion and phonon vibration. We demonstrate that the H Gibbs energy of formation in both tetrahedral and octahedral interstitial positions depends strongly on the temperature. The H Gibbs energy of formation under one atmosphere of pressure increases significantly with increasing temperature. The phonon vibration contribution plays a decisive role in the H Gibbs energy of formation with the increasing temperature. Using the predicted H Gibbs energy of formation, our calculated H concentrations in both metals are about one or two orders of magnitude lower than the experimental data at temperature range from 900 to 2400 K. Nanowires, nanofibers and nanotubes have been widely used as the building blocks in micro/nano-electromechanical systems, energy harvesting or storage devices, and small-scaled measurement equipment. We report that the surface effects of these nanobeams have a great impact on their deflection and internal forces. A simply supported nanobeam is taken as an example. For the displacement and shear force of the nanobeam, its dangerous sections are different from those predicted by the conventional beam theory, but for the bending moment, the dangerous section is the same. Moreover, the values of these three quantities for the nanobeam are all distinct from those calculated from the conventional beam model. The compositions of the organic pollutants of chemi-mechanical pulping wastewater were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectra and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) was approximately 18110 mg/L, and the ratio of biological oxygen demand to COD (BOD5/COD) was approximately 0.17, due to low biodegradability. In this study, Phanerochaete chrysosporium was selected and the changes in bacterial culture time required to transform pulping wastewater and the metabolites present before and after pretreatment in the wastewater were identified. A decline in the components of the pulping wastewater was observed. Initially, 43 kinds of organic compounds were detected in the raw water. After 3 days of treatment, only 21 organic compounds were detected. Then, 7 days later, the organic pollutants in the waste amounted to only 7 organic compounds. Through the analysis of analysis of P-RC APMP pulping wastewater and that treated by Phanerochaete chrysosporium using GCMS, the relative content of organic acids was 12.4%, in which phenylpropionic acid had the highest concentration of 11.3%. So, in the culture medium, phenylpropionic acid as the single carbon source can be completely degraded within 96 h. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDHs) have been regarded as significant electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their overpotential must still be further reduced to enable commercial applications. Herein, a promising and highly effective "hydroxyl ions hungry" electrode structure was prepared for the first time via a two-step hydrothermal reaction procedure to enhance the surface adsorption kinetics to obtain an ultralow overpotential. The electrode exhibits OER activity with ultralow overpotentials of 203 mV and 293 mV at the current densities of 10 mA cm−2 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, in 1.0 M KOH. There is a pressing need for new approaches to prevent stroke. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) promote vascular repair and revascularization in the ischemic brain. The present study sought to evaluate whether preventive delivery of EPCs could prevent or protect against stroke. Stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR-SP) received a single injection of EPCs, and their survival time wasmonitored. In addition, at 28 and/or 42 days after a single injection of EPCs, SHR-SP and mice were subjected to cerebral ischemia, and cerebral ischemic injury, local angiogenesis and in vivo EPC integration were determined. Other experiments examined the effects of EPC conditioned medium, and the distribution of donor EPCs taken from GFP transgenic mice. It was found that EPC-pretreated SHR-SP showed longer lifespans than untreated controls. A single preventive injection of EPCs could produce persistent protective effects against cerebral ischemic injury (lasting at least 42 days), and promote local angiogenesis in the ischemic brain, in two types of animals (SHR-SP and normotensive mice). EPCs of donor origin could be detected in the recipient peripheral blood, and integrated into the recipient ischemic brains. Furthermore, it was suggested that mouse EPCs might exert paracrine effects on cerebral ischemic injury in addition to their direct angiogenic effects. In conclusion, a single preventive injection of EPCs prolonged the lifespan of SHR-SP, and protected against cerebral ischemic injury for at least 7 weeks. Objective: To examine the present state of fatigue in young and middle-aged patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and to identify the elements that may be affecting it. Methods: From December 2020 to June 2021, 240 young and middle-aged patients with CHD who were being treated in the cardiology department of a tertiary care hospital in Suzhou were chosen using a convenience sampling method in order to gather data on the patients' sociodemographic status, fatigue, social support, and stress. Results: Of the 240 disseminated questionnaires, 220 valid responses were returned, resulting in an effective recovery rate of 91.67%. The frequency of exhaustion was 51.8%, and the fatigue score was (5.27 ± 2.77). The stress score was (11.15 ± 3.36), while the overall social support score was (39.13 ± 4.72). Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that age, exercise, staying up late, stress, social support, high-sensitivity troponin T, high-density lipoprotein, and ejection fraction were independent risk factors for fatigue in young and middle-aged patients with CHD (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Fatigue is more prevalent in young and middle-aged patients with CHD. Clinical nurses can create a unique management plan for patients based on their lifestyle and behavioral patterns, stress levels, social support, and clinical signs to reduce fatigue. Context.--Pembrolizumab is used in patients with metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma contingent upon the programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) combined positive score (CPS). Objective.--To compare PD-L1 CPS scores derived from paired resected primary tumors (PTs) and lymph node metastases (LMs) in patients with p16þ oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). Design.--We identified 38 resected p16+ OPSCCs for which paired PTs and LMs were available. PD-L1 immunohistochemistry using the SP263 antibody clone was done on both the PT and the LM. CPS scoring was performed by 4 observers, and data were analyzed at the CPS cut points of greater than or equal to 1 and 20 in regard to interobserver and interspecimen agreement. Results.--Overall agreement between consensus CPS scoring of PT and LM was seen in 76% of paired specimens (Κ = 0.53). No specimen received a negative consensus score. Interobserver agreement for both PT and LM was fair to substantial (Κ = 0.54 and 0.51, respectively) and was inferior to that seen in a prospective series of unselected head and neck squamous carcinoma cases evaluated at our institution (Κ = 0.84). Conclusions.--Given the high rates of interobserver and interspecimen variability, evaluation of additional material or by additional observers may be of value in performing CPS scoring in cases of p16þ OPSCC. [Display omitted] In order to realise high ionic conductivity and improved chemical stability, a series of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with semi-interpenetrating polymer network (sIPN) has been prepared via the incorporation of crosslinked poly(biphenyl N -methylpiperidine) (PBP) and spirobisindane-based intrinsically microporous poly(ether ketone) (PEK-SBI). The formation of phase separated structures as a result of the incompatibility between the hydrophilic PBP network and the hydrophobic PEK-SBI segment, has successfully promoted the hydroxide ion conductivity of AEMs. A swelling ratio (SR) as low as 12.2 % at 80 °C was recorded for the sIPN containing hydrophobic PEK-SBI as the linear polymer and crosslinked structure with a mass ratio of PBP to PEK-SBI of 90/10 (sIPN-90/10 (PEK-SBI)). The sIPN-90/10 (PEK-SBI) AEM achieved the highest hydroxide ion conductivity of 122.4 mS cm−1 at 80 °C and a recorded ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 2.26 meq g−1. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) clearly revealed the improved phase separation structure of sIPN-90/10 (PEK-SBI). N 2 adsorption isotherm indicated that the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of the AEMs increased with the increase of microporous PEK-SBI content. Interestingly, the sIPN-90/10 (PEK-SBI) AEM showed good alkaline stability for being able to maintain a conductivity of 94.7 % despite being soaked in a 1 M sodium hydroxide solution at 80 °C for 30 days. Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of a chemotherapy regimen combined with levofloxacin in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with Type-2 diabetes. Methods: Total 80 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with Type-2 diabetes admitted to Baoding People's Hospital from January, 2019 to January, 2022 were randomly divided into two groups: the experimental group and the control group, with 40 cases in each group. Patients in the control group were given the conventional 2HRZE/10HRE regimen, while those in the experimental group were given the chemotherapy regimen 2HRZEL/6HRE combined with levofloxacin. Sixty four slice spiral CT was used for chest plain scan before and after treatment, respectively, to evaluate the absorption of lesions based on the range of lung lesions; Venous blood was drawn to detect the changes of oxidative stress indicators, the incidence of adverse drug reactions and the negative conversion rate of sputum tuberculosis bacteria in the two groups. Results: After treatment, the efficacy of the experimental group was 90%, which was significantly higher than that of the control group (67.5%), with a statistically significant difference (p=0.01). After treatment, CD3+, CD4+, CD4+/ CD8+ and other indicators in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group, with a statistically significant difference (CD3+, p=0.01; CD4+, p=0.01; CD4+/CD8+, p=0.00), while CD8+ did not change significantly (p=0.92); The incidence of adverse reactions was 52.5% in the experimental group and 47.5% in the control group, with no statistically significant difference (p=0.66); The negative conversion rate of patients in the experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group at one month, three months and six months after treatment, with a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusion: Chemotherapy combined with levofloxacin is a safe and effective regimen for patients' pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with Type-2 diabetes, boasting a variety of benefits such as improved clinical efficacy, ameliorated cellular immune status, a high negative conversion rate of sputum tuberculosis bacteria, and no significant increase in adverse reactions. Members of glycosyltransferase family 75 (GT75) not only reversibly catalyze the autoglycosylation of a conserved arginine residue with specific NDP-sugars but also exhibit NDPpyranose mutase activity that reversibly converts specific NDP-pyranose to NDP-furanose. The latter activity provides valuable NDP-furanosyl donors for glycosyltransferases and requires a divalent cation as a cofactor instead of FAD used by UDP-D-galactopyranose mutase. However, details of the mechanism for NDP-pyranose mutase activity are not clear. Here we report the first crystal structures of GT75 family NDPpyranose mutases. The novel structures of GT75 member MtdL in complex with Mn2+ and GDP, GDP-D-glucopyranose, GDPL-fucopyranose, GDP-L-fucofuranose, respectively, combined with site-directed mutagenesis studies, reveal key residues involved in Mn2+ coordination, substrate binding, and catalytic reactions. We also provide a possible catalytic mechanism for this unique type of NDP-pyranose mutase. Taken together, our results highlight key elements of an enzyme family important for furanose biosynthesis. Since carbon-based structures of various dimensions, including one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes, two-dimensional (2D) graphene and three-dimensional (3D) carbon foams, have attracted significant attention as microwave absorption fillers, we present an exceptional hetero-junction filler with a 1D–2D–1D feature, achieved by manipulating 2D graphene into 1D carbon fibers in the fiber-extruding process under the electric field. The as-fabricated 1D–2D–1D structural fillers exhibited much-improved dielectric properties and promoted microwave absorption performance in their composites, which is linked to the establishment of enhanced polarization capability, the generation of increased electric loss pathway and the creation of more favorable electromagnetic energy consumption conditions. The results suggest that employing 2D graphene in the 1D–2D–1D nanostructures played the critical role in tuning the electromagnetic response ability, because of its intrinsic electric advantages and dimensional features. To broaden the effective absorption bandwidth, periodic pattern-absorbing structures were designed, which showed combined absorption advantages for various thicknesses. Since manipulating electromagnetic waves with electromagnetic active materials for environmental and electric engineering is a significant task, here a novel prototype is reported by introducing reduced graphene oxide (RGO) interfaces in carbon fiber (CF) networks for a hierarchical carbon fiber/reduced graphene oxide/nickel (CF-RGO-Ni) composite textile. Upon charaterizations of the microscopic morphologies, electrical and magnetic properties, the presence of three-dimensional RGO interfaces and bifunctional nickel nanoparticles substantially influences the related physical properties in the resulting hierarchical composite textiles. Eletromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance suggests that the hierarchical composite textiles hold a strong shielding effectiveness greater than 61 dB, showing greater advantages than conventional polymeric and foamy shielding composites. As a polymer-free lightweight structure, flexible CF-RGO-Ni composites of all electromagnetic active components offer unique understanding of the multi-scale and multiple mechanisms in electromagnetic energy consumption. Such a novel prototype of shielding structures along with convenient technology highlight a strategy to achieve high-performance EMI shielding, coupled with a universal approach for preparing advanced lightweight composites with graphene interfaces. To explore the clinical significance and prognosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients with WT1 mutations.In total, the clinical data of 269 adult patients with non-M3 AML were considered retrospectively. From these patients, 153 carried WT1 mutation whereas 116 were negative. WT1 mutation positive patients were further divided into WT1 low expression and high expression groups base on the expression level of WT1 by qPCR at diagnosis (cut off: 170500). Survival and therapeutic effect analysis were performed for the above patients with different interfering factors such as co-mutations, the extent of WT1 log reduction and the chemotherapy regimens. Patients with high WT1 expression have higher rate of relapse. We can accurately identify patients with inferior outcomes when we take the following factors into consideration: the WT1 expression level at diagnosis; different prognostic factors including co-mutations (especially NPM1 and FLT3-ITD); the log reduction of WT1 after induction therapy and the risk of stratification. Idarubicin + Cytarabine (IA) regimen could reduce the expression level of WT1 after treatment, and Allo-HSCT played an important role in improving the prognosis of patients with WT1 high expression and patients with WT1 negativity. Among the relapsed patients, there existed a rising trend of WT1-MRD in advance than MFC-MRD and that of patients with continuous complete remission (CR). Different clinical background should be taken into consideration when we judge the prognosis and therapeutic effect of patients with WT1 mutations. The article presents a study on an increase in occurrences of early positive Indian Ocean Dipole (pIOD), a type of Indian Ocean Dipole mode of ocean-atmosphere interannual variability with climate and socioeconomic impacts, under global warming. Topics discussed include the causes of the increase in occurrences of early pIOD, the diversity in spatial pattern and intensity and seasonal cycle displayed by the pIOD, and response of early pIOD to future greenhouse warming.

The genus Salmonella is responsible for many illnesses in humans and other vertebrate animals. We report here that Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium harbors three transketolases that support the non-oxidative branch of the pentose phosphate pathway. BLAST analysis identified two genes, STM14_2885 and STM14_2886, that together encode a putative transketolase (TktC) with 46-47% similarity to the known TktA and TktB isoforms. Assessing themRNAand protein expression for each of the three transketolases, we determined that all are expressed in WT cells and regulated to varying extents by the alternative sigma factor RpoS. Enzyme assays with lysates from WTand transketolase-knockout strains established that TktA is responsible for >88% of the transketolase activity in WT cells. We purified recombinant forms of each isoenzyme to assess the kinetics for canonical transketolase reactions. TktA and TktB had comparable values for Vmax (539-1362 µM NADH consumed/s), Km (80-739 µM), and catalytic efficiency (1.02 x 108-1.06 x 109 M-1/s) for each substrate tested. The recombinant form of TktC had lower Km values (23-120 µM), whereas the Vmax (7.8-16 µM NADH consumed/s) and catalytic efficiency (5.58 x 106 to 6.07 x 108 M-1/s) were 10-100-fold lower. Using a murine model of Salmonella infection, we showed that a strain lacking all three transketolases is avirulent in C57BL/6 mice. These data provide evidence that S. Consumption of a high-fat diet (HFD) promotes the development of obesity, a disease resulting from an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) has thermogenic capacity that burns calories to produce heat, and it is a potential target for the treatment and prevention of obesity. There is limited information regarding the impact of HFD on the BAT transcriptome. We hypothesized that HFD-induced obesity would lead to transcriptional regulation of BAT genes. RNA sequencing was used to generate global transcriptome profiles from BAT of lean mice fed with a low-fat diet (LFD) and obese mice fed with a HFD. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis identified increased expression of genes involved in biological processes (BP) related to immune responses, which enhanced molecular function (MF) in chemokine activity; decreased expression of genes involved in BP related to ion transport and muscle structure development, which reduced MF in channel and transporter activity and structural binding. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) functional pathway analysis indicated that pathways associated with innate immunity were enhanced by HFD, while pathways associated with muscle contraction and calcium signaling were suppressed by HFD. Collectively, these results suggest that diet-induced obesity changes transcriptomic signatures of BAT, leading to dysfunction involving inflammation, calcium signaling, ion transport, and cell structural development. Basophils have been shown to be important players in promoting lupus nephritis (LN). However, the relationship between circulating basophil counts and renal pathology activity of LN remains unclear. In this retrospective study, 159 clinical and pathology samples from patients with biopsy-proven LN were analyzed. The renal activity and classification were evaluated according to renal pathology. The correlations between circulating basophil counts and renal pathology activity index were assessed. Overall, circulating basophil counts correlated with total systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity index (SLEDAI) score ( r = − 0.31), renal SLEDAI score ( r = − 0.35), activity index (AI) score( r = − 0.40), and renal histologic activity parameters ( p < 0.05, respectively). Compared with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) non-LN patients, the LN group had lower basophil counts (0.007 ± 0.007 vs. 0.011 ± 0.010 × 10/L, p = 0.04). Subgroup analyses revealed that the circulating basophil counts in group B (AI > 8) were significantly lower than that in group A (AI ≤ 8) (0.004 ± 0.006 vs. 0.009 ± 0.009 × 10/L, p < 0.001). The difference was still significant when eliminating the influence of SLEDAI. Significant differences were found in circulating basophil counts among LN pathology classification groups ( p < 0.01). Groups of classes III, IV, and V were more likely to have lower circulating basophil counts when compared with group of class I/II ( p < 0.05). In this experiment, "Gala" apples were used as test materials, and 1-MCP treatment and fresh-keeping film packaging were used for storage at room temperature. The results showed that the storage effects of 1-MCP treatment and fresh-keeping film packaging were better than those of the control. Background: Drought stress during grain development causes significant yield loss in cereal production. The phosphorylated modification of starch granule-binding proteins (SGBPs) is an important mechanism regulating wheat starch biosynthesis. In this study, we performed the first proteomics and phosphoproteomics analyses of SGBPs in elite Chinese bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar Jingdong 17 under well-watered and water-stress conditions. Results: Water stress treatment caused significant reductions in spike grain numbers and weight, total starch and amylopectin content, and grain yield. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis revealed that the quantity of SGBPs was reduced significantly by water-deficit treatment. Phosphoproteome characterization of SGBPs under waterdeficit treatment demonstrated a reduced level of phosphorylation of main starch synthesis enzymes, particularly for granule-bound starch synthase (GBSS I), starch synthase II-a (SS II-a), and starch synthase III (SS III). Specifically, the Ser34 site of the GBSSI protein, the Tyr358 site of SS II-a, and the Ser837 site of SS III-a exhibited significant less phosphorylation under water-deficit treatment than well-watered treatment. Furthermore, the expression levels of several key genes related with starch biosynthesis detected by qRT-PCR were decreased significantly at 15 days post-anthesis under water-deficit treatment. Immunolocalization showed a clear movement of GBSS I from the periphery to the interior of starch granules during grain development, under both water-deficit and well-watered conditions. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that the reduction in gene expression or transcription level, protein expression and phosphorylation levels of starch biosynthesis related enzymes under water-deficit conditions is responsible for the significant decrease in total starch content and grain yield. Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs), combination of outstanding magnetism with specific selective binding capability for target molecules, have proven to be attractive in separation science and bio-applications. Herein, we proposed the core-shell magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers for food analysis, employing the Fe3O4 particles prepared by co-precipitation protocol as the magnetic core and MMIP film onto the silica layer as the recognition and adsorption of target analytes. The obtained MMIPs materials have been fully characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and re-binding experiments. Under the optimal conditions, the fabricated Fe3O4@MIPs demonstrated fast adsorption equilibrium, a highly improved imprinting capacity, and excellent specificity to target sterigmatocystin (ST), which have been successfully applied as highly efficient solid-phase extraction materials followed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The MMIP-based solid phase extraction (SPE) method gave linear response in the range of 0.05-5.0 mg⋅L-1 with a detection limit of 9.1 µg⋅L-1. Finally, the proposed method was used for the selective isolation and enrichment of ST in food samples with recoveries in the range 80.6-88.7% and the relative standard deviation (RSD) <5.6%. The situation of stable and slightly advancing glaciers in the Karakoram is called the “Karakoram anomaly”. Glacier surface velocity is one of the key parameters of glacier dynamics and mass balance, however, the response of glacier motion to this regional anomaly is not fully understood. Here, we characterize the spatial-temporal variations in glacier velocity over the Central Karakoram from 1999–2003. The inter-annual glacier velocity fields were retrieved using a cross-correlation-based algorithm applied to four Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) panchromatic image pairs. We find that most of the glaciers on the southern slope flowed faster than those on the northern slope, which might be attributed to the differences in glacier sizes. Furthermore, ice motion observations over four years reveal that most of the glaciers were quasi-stable or experienced small fluctuations of flow velocity during our study period. We identify a new surging event for the South Skamri Glacier in the study period by investigating the glacier frontal changes and the longer-term time series of surface velocities between 1996 and 2006. From the transverse velocity profiles of seven typical glaciers, we infer that basal sliding is the predominant motion mechanism of the middle and upper glaciers, whereas internal deformation dominates closest to the glacier terminus. To accurately estimate leaf area index (LAI) in mangrove areas, the selection of appropriate models and predictor variables is critical. However, there is a major challenge in quantifying and mapping LAI using multi-spectral sensors due to the saturation effects of traditional vegetation indices (VIs) for mangrove forests. World View-2 (WV2) imagery has proven to be effective to estimate LAI of grasslands and forests, but the sensitivity of its vegetation indices (VIs) has been uncertain for mangrove forests. Furthermore, the single model may exhibit certain randomness and instability in model calibration and estimation accuracy. Therefore, this study aims to explore the sensitivity of WV2 VIs for estimating mangrove LAI by comparing artificial neural network regression (ANNR), support vector regression (SVR) and random forest regression (RFR). The results suggest that the RFR algorithm yields the best results (RMSE = 0.45, 14.55% of the average LAI), followed by ANNR (RMSE = 0.49, 16.04% of the average LAI), and then SVR (RMSE = 0.51, 16.56% of the average LAI) algorithms using 5-fold cross validation (CV) using all VIs. Quantification of the variable importance shows that the VIs derived from the red-edge band consistently remain the most important contributor to LAI estimation. When the red-edge band-derived VIs are removed from the models, estimation accuracies measured in relative RMSE (RMSEr) decrease by 3.79%, 2.70% and 4.47% for ANNR, SVR and RFR models respectively. VIs derived from red-edge band also yield better accuracy compared with other traditional bands of WV2, such as near-infrared-1 and near-infrared-2 band. Furthermore, the estimated LAI values vary significantly across different mangrove species. The study demonstrates the utility of VIs of WV2 imagery and the selected machine-learning algorithms in developing LAI models in mangrove forests. The results indicate that the red-edge band of WV2 imagery can help alleviate the saturation problem and improve the accuracy of LAI estimation in a mangrove area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
