This article analyzes Christian, Muslim, and Hindu-based discourses and practices in relation to sufficiency, materialism, and the good life in the context of the European Union. The current political and scholarly debate emphasizes the need for a sustainability transformation and, more specifically, for reductions in resource use by the global consumer class. Within this discussion, the different approaches to and interpretations of the various facets of ecology and materialism, and the links between them, have become the primary focus. Questions about what a "good life", as opposed to a consumerist lifestyle, means and the need to focus on sufficiency rather than efficiency are being (re-)considered. Given that religions and faith-based actors (FBAs) play an essential role as interpreters of norms and values in societies, especially when societies are facing particular challenges, it is important to understand how they communicate information about relevant ideas and actions. What do FBAs say about sustainable lifestyles, sufficiency, and the role of materialism vis-à-vis those two ideas? How do they relate it all to questions of faith? Do they use faith-based or secular idioms to address the ideas? How do FBAs relate the ideas to practices? To begin answering these questions, we here present a content analysis of relevant texts and supplement the finding thereof with an analysis of expert interviews. The results come mainly from faith-based actors active on the EU level. Nevertheless, some of the actors also operate globally, which is why a clear, sharp regional separation is not entirely possible. This article identifies and explores the role of faith-based ideas and practices in maneuvering toward one of the most substantial societal challenges in this period of late capitalism and its materialist dimension. The regional focus imposes limitations on the scope of the religions in our sample, which is most evident in the case of Hinduism: here, it was only possible to include one organization in particular (Brahma Kumaris) in the empirical analysis. Latin-American coffee production has largely relegated women to specific family labor tasks, such as berry picking or cooking. But recent years have seen an increasing number of interventions to empower women in the agricultural sector, including coffee. As a contribution to the growing literature on women's empowerment in agriculture, this article draws on a randomized-controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate a gender empowerment project among coffee producers in Honduras. Previous RCT evaluations of gender empowerment interventions have focused on average treatment effects and paid less attention to the diversity of responses in the sample. This article evaluates the effect of a project to empower women in Honduras' coffee sector but pays attention to how the intervention interacted with the amount of land owned by women to produce different outcomes. The intervention consisted of 12 workshops offered to families in 10 coffee-producing groups. The baseline and end-line surveys (2016–2018) included a sample of 88 families (41 intervention and 47 control, from 4 to 5 communities respectively). Results showed limited effects of the intervention on women's empowerment for the pooled sample, but it found heterogeneous positive effects for land-owning women. Women who owned land and received the treatment scored fewer points on a deprivation score, had input over more decisions related to the use of household income, and were more satisfied with their leisure time. For quantity of land owned, this article also found positive heterogeneous effects for the same variables, and additionally for confidence speaking in public. The concept of consumption corridors proposes minimum and maximum limits to consumption on the normative premises of justice, human wellbeing, and guarantees of a good life for all. A central objection to the idea is that limits on resource use would interfere broadly with liberal freedoms, and consumption corridors would thus not be compatible with a liberal democratic setting. This claim rests on the assumption that protecting liberal freedom rights and enforcing limits constitute opposing forces. Here, liberal freedom is equated with the expansion of (unlimited) options of choice: the more options people have, and the fewer limits that are imposed on them, the greater the overall level of freedom. Therefore, discussions of limits are often reduced to negative restrictions and undemocratic demands. To problematize this rationale, we argue that in most liberal accounts, freedom and limits are mutually supportive of each other, and that the understanding of freedom as "the absence of limits" is in fact a particular understanding that has become dominant. Against this backdrop, we develop the notion of "green liberal freedom" that posits limits as a core concern of liberal understandings of freedom. Kreativit��t wird in der Sp��tmoderne zur Ware. Sie unterliegt den neoliberalen Anforderungen von Innovation, Optimierung und Selbstverantwortlichkeit. Der Vortrag untersucht aus einer geschlechtertheoretischen Perspektive das neoliberale ���Kreativit��tsdispositiv���, wie es von Andreas Reckwitz (2012, 2013, 2016) diagnostiziert wird. Er erweitert Reckwitz��� soziologische Ausf��hrungen um eine geschlechter- und politiktheoretische Perspektivierung, die die Verschr��nkung von Neoliberalismus, Individualismus und ���gouvernementaler Prekarisierung��� (Isabell Lorey) in den Blick nimmt. Dabei wirft der Vortrag auch die Frage auf, ob Kreativit��t im Sp��tkapitalismus jenseits eines neoliberalen Optimierungs- und Innovationsimperativs auch emanzipativ-subversive Praktiken hervorbringen kann. Denn dort ���wo es Macht gibt, gibt es Widerstand���, schreibt Michel Foucault in ���Der Wille zum Wissen��� (1983). In diesem Sinne geht der Vortrag auch auf die Spurensuche nach den widerst��ndigen Potentialen des Kreativen.

This paper refers to the ambivalence of secularization in order to explain why Cultural Christianity can show both a liberal and illiberal character. These two faces of Cultural Christianity are mostly due to the identity functions that, not only faith-based religion, but a particularly culturalized version of religion, entails. Proceeding from this, it will be demonstrated here how Cultural Christianity can turn into a concrete illiberal marker of identity or a resource for illiberal collective identity. Political participation and sustainability seem to be closely intertwined. In the last few decades it can be shown that the topic of sustainability and ecological interest groups play an important role in citizen engagement, political participation, and democratic innovations at the local level. Using a participatory rhombus model of participatory democracy, different forms of participation and democratic innovations in the representative sphere, in direct democracy, in demonstrative participatory space, and finally in deliberative participatory instruments are important in the decision-making for sustainability policies. Here the paper tries to close the gap in empirical data on the perceptions of citizens and councilors on these participatory instruments. Citizens believe strongly in the importance of elections and referendums, but they extend their political repertoire and start protesting and demanding more deliberative democracy. Councilors positively perceive democratic innovations, and the councilors of the Green Party in particular strongly support new participatory instruments. Consumption Corridors: Living a Good Life within Sustainable Limits explores how to enhance peoples’ chances to live a good life in a world of ecological and social limits. Rejecting familiar recitations of problems of ecological decline and planetary boundaries, this compact book instead offers a spirited explication of what everyone desires: a good life. Fundamental concepts of the good life are explained and explored, as are forces that threaten the good life for all. The remedy, says the book’s seven international authors, lies with the concept of consumption corridors, enabled by mechanisms of citizen engagement and deliberative democracy. Across five concise chapters, readers are invited into conversation about how wellbeing can be enriched by social change that joins "needs satisfaction" with consumerist restraint, social justice, and environmental sustainability. In this endeavour, lower limits of consumption that ensure minimal needs satisfaction for all are important, and enjoy ample precedent. The financial crisis led to an enormous economic downturn as well as dramatic increases in unemployment, insolvencies and public debt. Simultaneously, it revealed fundamental weaknesses of the current functioning of financial markets, if not global economic relations as such. Why, then, has the financial crisis not led to a more fundamental questioning of the politico-economic system and broader political change? In this paper, we aim to find an answer to this question by analyzing the construction of the financial crisis in German public discourse. We show that this construction is characterized by drama and perplexity, normative incoherence, and a lack of access for political alternatives. These findings, in turn, provide an important basis for understanding the political handling of the financial crisis in Germany.

Die gesellschaftliche Bearbeitung von Umweltproblemen, und in diesem Zusammenhang die Transformation des Energiesystems, inklusive der darin enthaltenden gesamtgesellschaftlichen Entwicklungsdynamiken, verlangt nach kollektiv bindenden Entscheidungen sowie der Anpassung bestehender Steuerungs- und Governance-Modelle. Dabei ist die Gestaltung von Beteiligungsverfahren ein zentraler Ankerpunkt: können Partizipationsangebote im Rahmen der Energiewende so gestaltet werden, dass sie über kurzweilige Beteiligung an Planungsverfahren hinausgehen und mittel- und langfristig die Akzeptanz für die notwendigen Transformationen des Energiesystems erhöhen? Welche Sorgen und Wünsche verbinden Bürger*innen mit konkreten Partizipationsangeboten und wie sollten diese ihrer Meinung nach entworfen werden? Ein zentraler Fokus der Partizipationsforschung liegt bis heute auf Untersuchungen zu den Auswirkungen von Verfahren auf das Verhalten und die Einstellungen der Teilnehmenden. Im Rahmen der Studie wurde diese Perspektive umgedreht: wie müssen Partizipationsangebote gestaltet werden, wenn sie nicht als Lösungsmechanismus für ein Problem konzipiert werden (z.B. geringe Akzeptanz von Maßnahmen im Zusammenhang mit Planungsverfahren) sondern sich an den allgemeinen Vorstellungen der Bürger*innen orientieren? Zu diesem Zweck wurde in Kooperation mit den Stadtwerken Münster eine Online-Befragung mit Kund*innen durchgeführt, um bezüglich dieser Fragestellungen wichtige Erkenntnisse zu gewinnen.

We explore the relevance of structural characteristics of policy networks for policy outcomes, thereby highlighting the continuing relevance of the policy network approach for policy analysis. Focusing on networks for transparency in the food chain in the Netherlands and the EU, we examine the proposition that network interactions in the form of communication and trust make a substantial difference in the estimation and explanation of transparency policy. Thereby, we identify existing obstacles to a successful transformation of the norm of transparency into appropriate political frameworks and governance mechanisms as well as potential steps for improvement. Data were gathered in structured interviews with the network actors in the Netherlands and at the EU level and are employed in a mathematical model allowing us to highlight the impact of communication and trust relationships on policy output.

Die fallzentrierte Studie verfolgt das Ziel, die Strukturen des Politikfelds der Grünen Gentechnik in Deutschland und den Niederlanden zu analysieren und ein umfangreiches Bild des Politikfelds sowie der dort aktiven Akteure, der geäußerten Meinungen und Positionen, der ausgetragenen Konflikte, der historischen Entwicklungen sowie der Initiativen zur Konfliktlösung und politischen Regulierung zu zeichnen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf drei Gruppen gentechnikkritischer zivilgesellschaftlicher Kollektivakteure: (alternative) Landwirtschafts-, Umweltschutz- und Verbraucherschutzakteure, deren Aktivitäten, Motivationen, Positionen, Rollen und deren Handeln innerhalb des Politikfelds der Grünen Gentechnik näher beleuchtet werden. Zentral steht dabei die Frage, welche Rollen die hier untersuchten Akteure der Anti-Gentechnik-Bewegung jeweils einnehmen und welche Qualität die Interaktionen zwischen diesen Akteuren haben., De case-based studie heeft als doel de structuren van het beleidsveld genetisch gemodificeerde organismen (ggo’s) in Duitsland en Nederland te analyseren en een compleet beeld te schetsen van het beleidsveld en de actoren die daarin actief zijn, de meningen en standpunten die naar voren zijn gebracht, de conflicten die zijn opgelost, de historische ontwikkelingen en de initiatieven voor conflictoplossing en politieke regulering. De focus ligt hierbij op drie groepen van collectieve actoren uit het maatschappelijk middenveld die kritisch zijn over gentechnologie: (alternatieve) landbouworganisaties, milieugroepen en consumentenorganisaties, wier activiteiten, motieven, standpunten, rollen en acties op het beleidsveld van de ggo’s nader worden onderzocht.
