Search

We propose a novel framework for retinal feature point alignment, designed for learning cross-modality features to enhance matching and registration across multi-modality retinal images. Our model draws on the success of previous learning-based feature detection and description methods. To better leverage unlabeled data and constrain the model to reproduce relevant keypoints, we integrate a keypoint-based segmentation task. It is trained in a self-supervised manner by enforcing segmentation consistency between different augmentations of the same image. By incorporating a keypoint augmented self-supervised layer, we achieve robust feature extraction across modalities. Extensive evaluation on two public datasets and one in-house dataset demonstrates significant improvements in performance for modality-agnostic retinal feature alignment. The significance of modeling long-term user interests for CTR prediction tasks in large-scale recommendation systems is progressively gaining attention among researchers and practitioners. Existing work, such as SIM and TWIN, typically employs a two-stage approach to model long-term user behavior sequences for efficiency concerns. The first stage rapidly retrieves a subset of sequences related to the target item from a long sequence using a search-based mechanism namely the General Search Unit (GSU), while the second stage calculates the interest scores using the Exact Search Unit (ESU) on the retrieved results. Given the extensive length of user behavior sequences spanning the entire life cycle, potentially reaching up to 10^6 in scale, there is currently no effective solution for fully modeling such expansive user interests. To overcome this issue, we introduced TWIN-V2, an enhancement of TWIN, where a divide-and-conquer approach is applied to compress life-cycle behaviors and uncover more accurate and diverse user interests. Specifically, a hierarchical clustering method groups items with similar characteristics in life-cycle behaviors into a single cluster during the offline phase. By limiting the size of clusters, we can compress behavior sequences well beyond the magnitude of 10^5 to a length manageable for online inference in GSU retrieval. Cluster-aware target attention extracts comprehensive and multi-faceted long-term interests of users, thereby making the final recommendation results more accurate and diverse. Extensive offline experiments on a multi-billion-scale industrial dataset and online A/B tests have demonstrated the effectiveness of TWIN-V2. We introduce the Multi-Instance Generation (MIG) task, which focuses on generating multiple instances within a single image, each accurately placed at predefined positions with attributes such as category, color, and shape, strictly following user specifications. MIG faces three main challenges: avoiding attribute leakage between instances, supporting diverse instance descriptions, and maintaining consistency in iterative generation. To address attribute leakage, we propose the Multi-Instance Generation Controller (MIGC). MIGC generates multiple instances through a divide-and-conquer strategy, breaking down multi-instance shading into single-instance tasks with singular attributes, later integrated. To provide more types of instance descriptions, we developed MIGC++. MIGC++ allows attribute control through text \& images and position control through boxes \& masks. Lastly, we introduced the Consistent-MIG algorithm to enhance the iterative MIG ability of MIGC and MIGC++. This algorithm ensures consistency in unmodified regions during the addition, deletion, or modification of instances, and preserves the identity of instances when their attributes are changed. We introduce the COCO-MIG and Multimodal-MIG benchmarks to evaluate these methods. Extensive experiments on these benchmarks, along with the COCO-Position benchmark and DrawBench, demonstrate that our methods substantially outperform existing techniques, maintaining precise control over aspects including position, attribute, and quantity. In this paper, we present PRISM, a Promptable and Robust Interactive Segmentation Model, aiming for precise segmentation of 3D medical images. PRISM accepts various visual inputs, including points, boxes, and scribbles as sparse prompts, as well as masks as dense prompts. Specifically, PRISM is designed with four principles to achieve robustness: (1) Iterative learning. The model produces segmentations by using visual prompts from previous iterations to achieve progressive improvement. (2) Confidence learning. PRISM employs multiple segmentation heads per input image, each generating a continuous map and a confidence score to optimize predictions. (3) Corrective learning. Following each segmentation iteration, PRISM employs a shallow corrective refinement network to reassign mislabeled voxels. (4) Hybrid design. PRISM integrates hybrid encoders to better capture both the local and global information. Comprehensive validation of PRISM is conducted using four public datasets for tumor segmentation in the colon, pancreas, liver, and kidney, highlighting challenges caused by anatomical variations and ambiguous boundaries in accurate tumor identification. Compared to state-of-the-art methods, both with and without prompt engineering, PRISM significantly improves performance, achieving results that are close to human levels. Nowadays, many platforms provide users with both search and recommendation services as important tools for accessing information. The phenomenon has led to a correlation between user search and recommendation behaviors, providing an opportunity to model user interests in a fine-grained way. Existing approaches either model user search and recommendation behaviors separately or overlook the different transitions between user search and recommendation behaviors. In this paper, we propose a framework named UniSAR that effectively models the different types of fine-grained behavior transitions for providing users a Unified Search And Recommendation service. Specifically, UniSAR models the user transition behaviors between search and recommendation through three steps: extraction, alignment, and fusion, which are respectively implemented by transformers equipped with pre-defined masks, contrastive learning that aligns the extracted fine-grained user transitions, and cross-attentions that fuse different transitions. To provide users with a unified service, the learned representations are fed into the downstream search and recommendation models. Joint learning on both search and recommendation data is employed to utilize the knowledge and enhance each other. Experimental results on two public datasets demonstrated the effectiveness of UniSAR in terms of enhancing both search and recommendation simultaneously. Group testing, a method that screens subjects in pooled samples rather than individually, has been employed as a cost-effective strategy for chlamydia screening among Iowa residents. In efforts to deepen our understanding of chlamydia epidemiology in Iowa, several group testing regression models have been proposed. Different than previous approaches, we expand upon the varying coefficient model to capture potential age-varying associations with chlamydia infection risk. In general, our model operates within a Bayesian framework, allowing regression associations to vary with a covariate of key interest. We employ a stochastic search variable selection process for regularization in estimation. Additionally, our model can integrate random effects to consider potential geographical factors and estimate unknown assay accuracy probabilities. The performance of our model is assessed through comprehensive simulation studies. Upon application to the Iowa group testing dataset, we reveal a significant age-varying racial disparity in chlamydia infections. We believe this discovery has the potential to inform the enhancement of interventions and prevention strategies, leading to more effective chlamydia control and management, thereby promoting health equity across all populations.

Materials systems with spin chirality can provide ultra-high-density, ultra-fast, and ultralow-power information carriers for digital transformation. These material systems include magnetic skyrmions, chiral domain walls, spin reorientation,and so on. The topological Hall effect (THE) has been identified as the most convenient and effective tool for detecting the presence of spin chirality in these systems. The research on the THE that may arise from spin reorientation and specifically in Fe3Ge with spin reorientation remains an unexplored area, so we study the THE in Fe3Ge Conduct systematic research. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) results indicate that our Fe3Ge ribbon sample has a D019 structure. First-principles calculations and magnetic and electrical testing confirm spin reorientation in the Fe3Ge ribbon sample at 350 K.The Hall resistivity test results are consistent with our expectations, indicating the presence of the THE in the Fe3Ge ribbon sample. The topological Hall resistivity reaches a maximum value of 0.69 m{\Omega} cm at 400 K. For the first time, a detailed experimental study of the THE in Fe3Ge with spin reorientation has been conducted, introducing a new member to the family of THE.

As the power system continues to be flooded with intermittent resources, it becomes more important to accurately assess the role of hydro and its impact on the power grid. While hydropower generation has been studied for decades, dependency of power generation on water availability and constraints in hydro operation are not well represented in power system models used in the planning and operation of large-scale interconnection studies. There are still multiple modeling gaps that need to be addressed; if not, they can lead to inaccurate operation and planning reliability studies, and consequently to unintentional load shedding or even blackouts. As a result, it is very important that hydropower is represented correctly in both steady-state and dynamic power system studies. In this paper, we discuss the development and use of the Hydrological Dispatch and Analysis Tool (Hy-DAT) as an interactive graphical user interface, that uses a novel methodology to address the hydropower modeling gaps like water availability and interdependency using a database and algorithms to generate accurate representative models for power system simulation.

Tin perovskites are emerging as promising alternatives to their lead-based counterparts for high-performance and flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, their rapid crystallization often leads to inadequate film quality and poor device performance. In this study, the role of GeI2 as an additive is investigated for controlling the nucleation and crystallization processes of formamidium tin triiodide (FASnI3). The findings reveal the preferential formation of a Ge-rich layer at the bottom of the perovskite film upon the introduction of GeI2. It is proposed that the initial formation of the Ge-complex acts as a crystallization regulator, promoting oriented growth of subsequent FASnI3 crystals and enhancing overall crystallinity. Through the incorporation of an optimal amount of GeI2, flexible Sn PSCs with an efficiency of 10.8% were achieved. Furthermore, it was observed that the GeI2 additive ensures a remarkable shelf-life for the devices, with the rigid cells retaining 91% of their initial performance after more than 13,800 hours of storage in an N2 gas environment. This study elucidates the mechanistic role of GeI2 in regulating the nucleation and crystallization process of tin perovskites, providing valuable insights into the significance of additive engineering for the development of high-performance flexible tin PSCs.

We present a Multi-Instance Generation (MIG) task, simultaneously generating multiple instances with diverse controls in one image. Given a set of predefined coordinates and their corresponding descriptions, the task is to ensure that generated instances are accurately at the designated locations and that all instances' attributes adhere to their corresponding description. This broadens the scope of current research on Single-instance generation, elevating it to a more versatile and practical dimension. Inspired by the idea of divide and conquer, we introduce an innovative approach named Multi-Instance Generation Controller (MIGC) to address the challenges of the MIG task. Initially, we break down the MIG task into several subtasks, each involving the shading of a single instance. To ensure precise shading for each instance, we introduce an instance enhancement attention mechanism. Lastly, we aggregate all the shaded instances to provide the necessary information for accurately generating multiple instances in stable diffusion (SD). To evaluate how well generation models perform on the MIG task, we provide a COCO-MIG benchmark along with an evaluation pipeline. Extensive experiments were conducted on the proposed COCO-MIG benchmark, as well as on various commonly used benchmarks. The evaluation results illustrate the exceptional control capabilities of our model in terms of quantity, position, attribute, and interaction. AI and robotics technologies have witnessed remarkable advancements in the past decade, revolutionizing work patterns and opportunities in various domains. The application of these technologies has propelled society towards an era of symbiosis between humans and machines. To facilitate efficient communication between humans and intelligent robots, we propose the "Avatar" system, an immersive low-latency panoramic human-robot interaction platform. We have designed and tested a prototype of a rugged mobile platform integrated with edge computing units, panoramic video capture devices, power batteries, robot arms, and network communication equipment. Under favorable network conditions, we achieved a low-latency high-definition panoramic visual experience with a delay of 357ms. Operators can utilize VR headsets and controllers for real-time immersive control of robots and devices. The system enables remote control over vast physical distances, spanning campuses, provinces, countries, and even continents (New York to Shenzhen). Additionally, the system incorporates visual SLAM technology for map and trajectory recording, providing autonomous navigation capabilities. We believe that this intuitive system platform can enhance efficiency and situational experience in human-robot collaboration, and with further advancements in related technologies, it will become a versatile tool for efficient and symbiotic cooperation between AI and humans., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Moir\'e superlattices have emerged as a new platform for studying strongly correlated quantum phenomena, but these systems have been largely limited to van der Waals layer two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here we introduce moir\'e superlattices leveraging ultra-thin, ligand-free halide perovskites, facilitated by ionic interactions. Square moir\'e superlattices with varying periodic lengths are clearly visualized through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Twist-angle-dependent transient photoluminescence microscopy and electrical characterizations indicate the emergence of localized bright excitons and trapped charge carriers near a twist angle of ~10{\deg}. The localized excitons are accompanied by enhanced exciton emission, attributed to an increased oscillator strength by a theoretically forecasted flat band. This work illustrates the potential of extended ionic interaction in realizing moir\'e physics at room temperature, broadening the horizon for future investigations.

High-resolution Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images are crucial for ophthalmology studies but are limited by their relatively narrow field of view (FoV). Image mosaicking is a technique for aligning multiple overlapping images to obtain a larger FoV. Current mosaicking pipelines often struggle with substantial noise and considerable displacement between the input sub-fields. In this paper, we propose a versatile pipeline for stitching multi-view OCT/OCTA \textit{en face} projection images. Our method combines the strengths of learning-based feature matching and robust pixel-based registration to align multiple images effectively. Furthermore, we advance the application of a trained foundational model, Segment Anything Model (SAM), to validate mosaicking results in an unsupervised manner. The efficacy of our pipeline is validated using an in-house dataset and a large public dataset, where our method shows superior performance in terms of both accuracy and computational efficiency. Interactive segmentation model leverages prompts from users to produce robust segmentation. This advancement is facilitated by prompt engineering, where interactive prompts serve as strong priors during test-time. However, this is an inherently subjective and hard-to-reproduce process. The variability in user expertise and inherently ambiguous boundaries in medical images can lead to inconsistent prompt selections, potentially affecting segmentation accuracy. This issue has not yet been extensively explored for medical imaging. In this paper, we assess the test-time variability for interactive medical image segmentation with diverse point prompts. For a given target region, the point is classified into three sub-regions: boundary, margin, and center. Our goal is to identify a straightforward and efficient approach for optimal prompt selection during test-time based on three considerations: (1) benefits of additional prompts, (2) effects of prompt placement, and (3) strategies for optimal prompt selection. We conduct extensive experiments on the public Medical Segmentation Decathlon dataset for challenging colon tumor segmentation task. To address prevalent issues in medical imaging, such as data acquisition challenges and label availability, transfer learning from natural to medical image domains serves as a viable strategy to produce reliable segmentation results. However, several existing barriers between domains need to be broken down, including addressing contrast discrepancies, managing anatomical variability, and adapting 2D pretrained models for 3D segmentation tasks. In this paper, we propose ProMISe,a prompt-driven 3D medical image segmentation model using only a single point prompt to leverage knowledge from a pretrained 2D image foundation model. In particular, we use the pretrained vision transformer from the Segment Anything Model (SAM) and integrate lightweight adapters to extract depth-related (3D) spatial context without updating the pretrained weights. For robust results, a hybrid network with complementary encoders is designed, and a boundary-aware loss is proposed to achieve precise boundaries. We evaluate our model on two public datasets for colon and pancreas tumor segmentations, respectively. Compared to the state-of-the-art segmentation methods with and without prompt engineering, our proposed method achieves superior performance. Deep models suffer from limited generalization capability to unseen domains, which has severely hindered their clinical applicability. Specifically for the retinal vessel segmentation task, although the model is supposed to learn the anatomy of the target, it can be distracted by confounding factors like intensity and contrast. We propose Meta learning on Anatomy-consistent Pseudo-modalities (MAP), a method that improves model generalizability by learning structural features. We first leverage a feature extraction network to generate three distinct pseudo-modalities that share the vessel structure of the original image. Next, we use the episodic learning paradigm by selecting one of the pseudo-modalities as the meta-train dataset, and perform meta-testing on a continuous augmented image space generated through Dirichlet mixup of the remaining pseudo-modalities. Further, we introduce two loss functions that facilitate the model's focus on shape information by clustering the latent vectors obtained from images featuring identical vasculature. We evaluate our model on seven public datasets of various retinal imaging modalities and we conclude that MAP has substantially better generalizability. The Segment Anything Model (SAM) is a recently developed all-range foundation model for image segmentation. It can use sparse manual prompts such as bounding boxes to generate pixel-level segmentation in natural images but struggles in medical images such as low-contrast, noisy ultrasound images. We propose a refined test-phase prompt augmentation technique designed to improve SAM's performance in medical image segmentation. The method couples multi-box prompt augmentation and an aleatoric uncertainty-based false-negative (FN) and false-positive (FP) correction (FNPC) strategy. We evaluate the method on two ultrasound datasets and show improvement in SAM's performance and robustness to inaccurate prompts, without the necessity for further training or tuning. Moreover, we present the Single-Slice-to-Volume (SS2V) method, enabling 3D pixel-level segmentation using only the bounding box annotation from a single 2D slice. Our results allow efficient use of SAM in even noisy, low-contrast medical images. The source code will be released soon.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have exhibited strong performance in medical image segmentation tasks by capturing high-level (local) information, such as edges and textures. However, due to the limited field of view of convolution kernel, it is hard for CNNs to fully represent global information. Recently, transformers have shown good performance for medical image segmentation due to their ability to better model long-range dependencies. Nevertheless, transformers struggle to capture high-level spatial features as effectively as CNNs. A good segmentation model should learn a better representation from local and global features to be both precise and semantically accurate. In our previous work, we proposed CATS, which is a U-shaped segmentation network augmented with transformer encoder. In this work, we further extend this model and propose CATS v2 with hybrid encoders. Specifically, hybrid encoders consist of a CNN-based encoder path paralleled to a transformer path with a shifted window, which better leverage both local and global information to produce robust 3D medical image segmentation. We fuse the information from the convolutional encoder and the transformer at the skip connections of different resolutions to form the final segmentation. The proposed method is evaluated on three public challenge datasets: Beyond the Cranial Vault (BTCV), Cross-Modality Domain Adaptation (CrossMoDA) and task 5 of Medical Segmentation Decathlon (MSD-5), to segment abdominal organs, vestibular schwannoma (VS) and prostate, respectively. Medical image segmentation is a critical task in medical image analysis. In recent years, deep learning based approaches have shown exceptional performance when trained on a fully-annotated dataset. However, data annotation is often a significant bottleneck, especially for 3D medical images. Active learning (AL) is a promising solution for efficient annotation but requires an initial set of labeled samples to start active selection. When the entire data pool is unlabeled, how do we select the samples to annotate as our initial set? This is also known as the cold-start AL, which permits only one chance to request annotations from experts without access to previously annotated data. Cold-start AL is highly relevant in many practical scenarios but has been under-explored, especially for 3D medical segmentation tasks requiring substantial annotation effort. In this paper, we present a benchmark named COLosSAL by evaluating six cold-start AL strategies on five 3D medical image segmentation tasks from the public Medical Segmentation Decathlon collection. We perform a thorough performance analysis and explore important open questions for cold-start AL, such as the impact of budget on different strategies. Our results show that cold-start AL is still an unsolved problem for 3D segmentation tasks but some important trends have been observed. Recent advancements in bipartite consensus, a scenario where agents are divided into two disjoint sets with agents in the same set agreeing on a certain value and those in different sets agreeing on opposite or specifically related values, have highlighted its potential applications across various fields. Traditional research typically relies on the presence of a positive-negative spanning tree, which limits the practical applicability of bipartite consensus. This study relaxes that assumption by allowing for weak connectivity within the network, where paths can be weighted by semidefinite matrices. By exploring the algebraic constraints imposed by positive-negative trees and semidefinite paths, we derive sufficient conditions for achieving bipartite consensus. Among the research efforts to segment the retinal vasculature from fundus images, deep learning models consistently achieve superior performance. However, this data-driven approach is very sensitive to domain shifts. For fundus images, such data distribution changes can easily be caused by variations in illumination conditions as well as the presence of disease-related features such as hemorrhages and drusen. Since the source domain may not include all possible types of pathological cases, a model that can robustly recognize vessels on unseen domains is desirable but remains elusive, despite many proposed segmentation networks of ever-increasing complexity. In this work, we propose a contrastive variational auto-encoder that can filter out irrelevant features and synthesize a latent image, named deep angiogram, representing only the retinal vessels. Then segmentation can be readily accomplished by thresholding the deep angiogram. The generalizability of the synthetic network is improved by the contrastive loss that makes the model less sensitive to variations of image contrast and noisy features. Compared to baseline deep segmentation networks, our model achieves higher segmentation performance via simple thresholding. Due to the absence of a single standardized imaging protocol, domain shift between data acquired from different sites is an inherent property of medical images and has become a major obstacle for large-scale deployment of learning-based algorithms. For retinal vessel images, domain shift usually presents as the variation of intensity, contrast and resolution, while the basic tubular shape of vessels remains unaffected. Thus, taking advantage of such domain-invariant morphological features can greatly improve the generalizability of deep models. In this study, we propose a method named VesselMorph which generalizes the 2D retinal vessel segmentation task by synthesizing a shape-aware representation. Inspired by the traditional Frangi filter and the diffusion tensor imaging literature, we introduce a Hessian-based bipolar tensor field to depict the morphology of the vessels so that the shape information is taken into account. We map the intensity image and the tensor field to a latent space for feature extraction. Then we fuse the two latent representations via a weight-balancing trick and feed the result to a segmentation network. We evaluate on six public datasets of fundus and OCT angiography images from diverse patient populations. VesselMorph achieves superior generalization performance compared with competing methods in different domain shift scenarios.

The confluence of Search and Recommendation (S&R) services is vital to online services, including e-commerce and video platforms. The integration of S&R modeling is a highly intuitive approach adopted by industry practitioners. However, there is a noticeable lack of research conducted in this area within academia, primarily due to the absence of publicly available datasets. Consequently, a substantial gap has emerged between academia and industry regarding research endeavors in joint optimization using user behavior data from both S&R services. To bridge this gap, we introduce the first large-scale, real-world dataset KuaiSAR of integrated Search And Recommendation behaviors collected from Kuaishou, a leading short-video app in China with over 350 million daily active users. Previous research in this field has predominantly employed publicly available semi-synthetic datasets and simulated, with artificially fabricated search behaviors. Distinct from previous datasets, KuaiSAR contains genuine user behaviors, including the occurrence of each interaction within either search or recommendation service, and the users' transitions between the two services. This work aids in joint modeling of S&R, and utilizing search data for recommender systems (and recommendation data for search engines). Furthermore, due to the various feedback labels associated with user-video interactions, KuaiSAR also supports a broad range of tasks, including intent recommendation, multi-task learning, and modeling of long sequential multi-behavioral patterns. Recovering noise-covered details from low-light images is challenging, and the results given by previous methods leave room for improvement. Recent diffusion models show realistic and detailed image generation through a sequence of denoising refinements and motivate us to introduce them to low-light image enhancement for recovering realistic details. However, we found two problems when doing this, i.e., 1) diffusion models keep constant resolution in one reverse process, which limits the speed; 2) diffusion models sometimes result in global degradation (e.g., RGB shift). To address the above problems, this paper proposes a Pyramid Diffusion model (PyDiff) for low-light image enhancement. PyDiff uses a novel pyramid diffusion method to perform sampling in a pyramid resolution style (i.e., progressively increasing resolution in one reverse process). Pyramid diffusion makes PyDiff much faster than vanilla diffusion models and introduces no performance degradation. Furthermore, PyDiff uses a global corrector to alleviate the global degradation that may occur in the reverse process, significantly improving the performance and making the training of diffusion models easier with little additional computational consumption. Extensive experiments on popular benchmarks show that PyDiff achieves superior performance and efficiency. Synchronization and desynchronization are the two ends on the spectrum of emergent phenomena that somehow often coexist in biological, neuronal, and physical networks. However, previous studies essentially regard their coexistence as a partition of the network units: those that are in relative synchrony and those that are not. In real-world systems, desynchrony bears subtler divisions because the interacting units are high-dimensional, like fish schooling with varying speeds in a circle, synchrony and desynchrony may occur to the different dimensions of the population. In this work, we show with an ensemble of multidimensional Kuramoto oscillators, that this property is generalizable to arbitrary dimensions: for a $d$ dimensional population, there exist $2^d$ system modes where each dimension is either synchronized or desynchronized, represented by a set of almost binary order parameters. Such phenomena are induced by a matrix coupling mechanism that goes beyond the conventional scalar-valued coupling by capturing the inter-dimensional dependence amongst multidimensional individuals, which arises naturally from physical, sociological and engineering systems. As verified by our theory, the property of the coupling matrix thoroughly affects the emergent system modes and the phase transitions toward them. By numerically demonstrating that these system modes are interchangeable through matrix manipulation, we also observe explosive synchronization/desynchronization that is induced without the conditions that are previously deemed essential. Our discovery provides theoretical analogy to the cerebral activity where the resting state and the activated state coexist unihemispherically, it also evokes a new possibility of information storage in oscillatory neural networks., Comment: 21 pages
