Abstract

Recently a new injection scheme for Laser Wake Field Acceleration, employing a single 100-TW-class laser system, has been proposed. In the Resonant Multi-Pulse Ionization injection (ReMPI) a resonant train of pulses drives a large amplitude plasma wave that traps electrons extracted from the plasma by further ionization of a high-Z dopant (Argon in the present paper). While the pulses of the driver train have intensity below the threshold for the dopant's ionization, the properly delayed and frequency doubled (or more) ionization pulse possesses an electric field large enough to extract electrons, though its normalized amplitude is well below unity. In this paper we will report on numerical simulations results aimed at the generation of GeV-scale bunches with normalized emittance and {\it rms} energy below $80\, nm \times rad $ and $0.5\, \%$, respectively. Analytical consideration of the FEL performance for a $1.3\, GeV$ bunch will be also reported., Comment: EAAC 2017 Conference, Elba, Italy

2. Formation and stability of a hollow electron beam in the presence of a plasma wake field driven by an ultra-short electron bunch

Abstract

A numerical investigation on the spatiotemporal evolution of an electron beam, externally injected in a plasma in the presence of a plasma wake field, is carried out. The latter is driven by an ultra-short relativistic axially-symmetric femtosecond electron bunch. We first derive a novel Poisson-like equation for the wake potential where the driving term is the ultra-short bunch density, taking suitably into account the interplay between the sharpness and high energy of the bunch. Then, we show that a channel is formed longitudinally, through the externally injected beam while experiencing the effects of the bunch-driven plasma wake field, within the context of thermal wave model. The formation of the channel seems to be a final stage of the 3D evolution of the beam. This involves the appearance of small filaments and bubbles around the longitudinal axis. The bubbles coalesce forming a relatively stable axially-symmetric hollow beam structure., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Self modulated dynamics of a relativistic charged particle beam is reviewed within the context of the theory of plasma wake field excitation. The self-consistent description of the beam dynamics is provided by coupling the Vlasov equation with a Poisson-type equation relating the plasma wake potential to the beam density. An analysis of the beam envelope self-modulation is then carried out and the criteria for the occurrence of the instability are discussed thereby., Comment: This is a 10 pages manuscript which contain 4 figures. Abstract

The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA (European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications) is producing a conceptual design report for a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams accelerated using plasmas. EuPRAXIA will be set up as a distributed Open Innovation platform with two construction sites, one with a focus on beam-driven plasma acceleration (PWFA) and another site with a focus on laser-driven plasma acceleration (LWFA). User areas at both sites will provide access to FEL pilot experiments, positron generation and acceleration, compact radiation sources, and test beams for HEP detector development. Support centres in four different countries will complement the pan-European implementation of this infrastructure., Proceedings of the 10th Int. Abstract

Internet of Things (IoT) solutions guarantee the high performance requested by users and authorities in terms of efficiency, sustainability, connectivity, and durability for modern transportation infrastructures, allowing, at the same time, small size, low power consumption, wireless transmission and easily deployable solutions. IoT monitoring systems powered through Energy Harvesting Technologies (EHTs) are often indicated as the most efficient solutions to address these requests because of several advantages (e.g., remote management simplification, independence from electricity grid). In this paper, the most used EHTs in the field of road infrastructures were analyzed and, among them, a photovoltaic standalone system (PVSS) was selected and considered as the power supply unit of an electronic structural health monitoring (SHM) system. In particular, a network of sensor units (SUs), wirelessly connected to one central unit (CU), acting as an innovative road pavement monitoring system solution was taken in account as benchmark. Consequently, the objective of this study is to draw guidelines for the designer that can establish the proper sizing of the PVSS, based on the energy consumption of the SHM system, according to multiple factors, such as typology and number of sensors, frequency of measurements, duty cycle, and days of autonomy.

Abstract

Parametric instabilities induced at the plasma edge by lower hybrid wave power externally coupled to tokamak plasmas have, via broadening of the antenna spectrum, strong influence on the power deposition and current drive in the core. For modeling the parametric instabilities at the tokamak plasma edge in lower hybrid current drive experiments, the effect of the collisions has been neglected so far. In the present work, a specific collisional parametric dispersion relation, useful to analyze these nonlinear phenomena near the lower hybrid antenna mouth, is derived for the first time, based on a kinetic model. Numerical solutions show that in such cold plasma regions the collisions prevent the onset of the parametric instabilities. This result is important for present lower hybrid current drive experiments, as well as in fusion reactor scenarios.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to study the variability of on-site acoustic measurements in non-normal conditions, as a function of the angle. A porous European mix was investigated. In order to reject the hypothesis that the cause of the variations in the acoustic properties is the surface inhomogeneity, texture properties were investigated according to the standard ISO 13473-1 and ISO/CD TS 13473-4. The acoustic absorption coefficient was measured according to ISO 13472-1. Results were compared and analysed in terms of averages and standard deviations. Result analyses may allow us to derive how absorption properties may vary as a function of the angle of incidence (under the hypothesis of homogeneous surface texture of the friction course). A tentative theoretical framework for explaining the dependence of acoustic absorption on incidence angle was formulated. Abstract

In recent months, Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread throughout the world. COVID-19 patients show mild, moderate or severe symptoms with the latter ones requiring access to specialized intensive care. SARS-CoV-2 infections, pathogenesis and progression have not been clearly elucidated yet, thus forcing the development of many complementary approaches to identify candidate cellular pathways involved in disease progression. Host lipids play a critical role in the virus life, being the double-membrane vesicles a key factor in coronavirus replication. Moreover, lipid biogenesis pathways affect receptor-mediated virus entry at the endosomal cell surface and modulate virus propagation. In this study, targeted lipidomic analysis coupled with proinflammatory cytokines and alarmins measurement were carried out in serum of COVID-19 patients characterized by different severity degree. Serum IL-26, a cytokine involved in IL-17 pathway, TSLP and adiponectin were measured and correlated to lipid COVID-19 patient profiles. These results could be important for the classification of the COVID-19 disease and the identification of therapeutic targets.

Abstract

Bardet–Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare autosomal recessive ciliopathy resulting in multiple organ dysfunctions, including chronic kidney disease (CKD). Despite the recent progress in the ’ciliopathy’ field, there is still little information on the mechanisms underlying renal disease. To elucidate these pathomechanisms, we conducted a translational study, including (i) the characterization of the urine metabolomic pattern of BBS patients and controls in a pilot and confirmation study and (ii) the proteomic analysis of the BBS10 interactome, one of the major mutated BBS genes in patients, in a renal-epithelial-derived cell culture model. The urine metabolomic fingerprinting of BBS patients differed from controls in both pilot and confirmation studies, demonstrating an increased urinary excretion of several monocarboxylates, including lactic acid (LA), at both early and late CKD stages. Increased urine LA was detected in the absence of both increased plasmatic LA levels and generalized proximal tubular dysfunction, suggesting a possible renal-specific defective handling. The inner medulla renal epithelial (IMCD3) cell line, where Bbs10 was stably invalidated, displayed an increased proliferative rate, increased ATP production, and an up-regulation of aerobic glycolysis. A mass spectrometry-based analysis detected several putative BBS10 interactors in vitro, indicating a potential role of BBS10 in several biological processes, including renal metabolism, RNA processing, and cell proliferation. The present study suggests that the urine metabolomic pattern of BBS patients may reflect intra-renal metabolic aberrations. The analysis of BBS10 interactors unveils possible novel functions, including cell metabolism.

Abstract

The processes of heat transfer occurring between the Earth’s asthenosphere and lithosphere are responsible for partial melting of rocks, leading to the magma generation and its migration and segregation in the crust and, possibly, to volcanoes generation at the surface. Convection is the dominant mechanism regulating the heat transfer from the asthenosphere to the lithosphere, although many aspects of the whole process are not yet clear. Therefore, the knowledge of the physical processes leading to the melting of the lithospheric rocks has important consequences in understanding the interior Earth dynamics, the surface volcanic dynamics, and its related hazards. Rock melting occurs when the temperature gradient meets the rock solidus. Here, we propose a nonlinear convective 1D analytical model (representing an approximation of more 3D complex models). The steady-state solution of our equation is in good agreement with the estimated geotherms of the asthenosphere. A perturbative approach leads to a heat swelling at the boundary between asthenosphere and lithosphere able to determine its melting and the birth of a volcano.

41. A Numerical Study on a Modified Arcan Test for Additive Manufacturing

Abstract

In this communication reference was made to PolyLactic Acid products of 3D printing by Fused Filament Fabrication technique. To assess the fracture behavior of such manufactured parts, consistently with their transversal isotropy and brittle behavior, a modified Arcan fixture was proposed, allowing one to easily generate mixed mode loading conditions by a simple uniaxial testing machine. For a preliminary assessment of the novel equipment, a large-scale finite element model was developed. The model takes into account the presence of design tolerances and frictional contact between sample and fixture as well as interlaminar debonding within the sample, by means of explicit analyses including geometric nonlinearities. Computing costs and simulation accuracy were optimized by exploiting mass scaling, boundary conditions and diverse solutions for sample fastening.

Abstract

COVID-19 is a global threat that has spread since the end of 2019, causing severe clinical sequelae and deaths, in the context of a world pandemic. The infection of the highly pathogenetic and infectious SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has been proven to exert systemic effects impacting the metabolism. Yet, the metabolic pathways involved in the pathophysiology and progression of COVID-19 are still unclear. Here, we present the results of a mass spectrometry-based targeted metabolomic analysis on a cohort of 52 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, classified according to disease severity as mild, moderate, and severe. Our analysis defines a clear signature of COVID-19 that includes increased serum levels of lactic acid in all the forms of the disease. Pathway analysis revealed dysregulation of energy production and amino acid metabolism. Globally, the variations found in the serum metabolome of COVID-19 patients may reflect a more complex systemic perturbation induced by SARS-CoV-2, possibly affecting carbon and nitrogen liver metabolism.

Abstract

We carry out a stability analysis of a relativistic nonlaminar electron beam which is experiencing the self-consistent plasma wake field excitation. This is done in overdense regime (i.e. plasma density much greater than beam density) in a cold plasma. We adopt the self-consistent kinetic model for the plasma wake field excitation, that is based on the pair of Vlasov-Poisson-type equations. The latter governs the phase-space spatiotemporal evolution of the beam and its linearized form leads to a Landau-type approach to the beam stability analysis. Thereby, the analysis, performed for the case of a Gaussian electron beam distribution, shows the existence of the unstable modes for both cold and warm beams, respectively.

Abstract

European physical journal special topics 229(24), 3675 - 4284 (2020). doi:10.1140/epjst/e2020-000127-8, This report presents the conceptual design of a new European research infrastructure EuPRAXIA. The concept has been established over the last four years in a unique collaboration of 41 laboratories within a Horizon 2020 design study funded by the European Union. EuPRAXIA is the first European project that develops a dedicated particle accelerator research infrastructure based on novel plasma acceleration concepts and laser technology. It focuses on the development of electron accelerators and underlying technologies, their user communities, and the exploitation of existing accelerator infrastructures in Europe. EuPRAXIA has involved, amongst others, the international laser community and industry to build links and bridges with accelerator science — through realising synergies, identifying disruptive ideas, innovating, and fostering knowledge exchange. The Eu-PRAXIA project aims at the construction of an innovative electron accelerator using laser- and electron-beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration that offers a significant reduction in size and possible savings in cost over current state-of-the-art radiofrequency-based accelerators. The foreseen electron energy range of one to five gigaelectronvolts (GeV) and its performance goals will enable versatile applications in various domains, e.g. as a compact free-electron laser (FEL), compact sources for medical imaging and positron generation, table-top test beams for particle detectors, as well as deeply penetrating X-ray and gamma-ray sources for material testing. EuPRAXIA is designed to be the required stepping stone to possible future plasma-based facilities, such as linear colliders at the high-energy physics (HEP) energy frontier. Consistent with a high-confidence approach, the project includes measures to retire risk by establishing scaled technology demonstrators. Abstract

Catastrophic and accidental natural events (e.g., earthquakes, sudden floods, fires, etc.) and deficiencies in appropriate management activities require proper plans for disaster management and real-time definition of safe paths and escape routes. Emergencies can affect the structural health status of structures and infrastructures and, consequently, the safety in highly populated areas (e.g., urban contexts, occasional assembly points for crowds, theme parks, etc.) is compromised. Consequently, the use of a decision platform for the management of structures and infrastructures, which is able to gather real-time data from sensors and provide alerts and augmented information about safe paths, paves the way to the adoption of a proactive form of risk management. In this work, objectives were confined into the validation of a Near-Field Communication (NFC) system. Data coming from user smartphones using the NFC technology and sensor data deriving from the decision platform were used as input in a Machine Learning (ML) algorithm. Results show that the ML algorithm mentioned above is able to refine the safe path recognition strategy defined from the platform. In addition, the bidirectional and touch less NFC technology allows the delivery of alerts and disaster plan dissemination, also in the case of connectivity shutdown.

Abstract

Expected and unexpected events affect road infrastructure leading to several issues that require maintenance interventions or prompt actions. In order to face the issues mentioned above, specially designed platforms can be used. Despite the high number of solutions presented in the last decades, it is difficult to find real applications of systems deputed to the emergency management of the abovementioned infrastructures. This paper aims at describing an innovative platform and the results of its first application. The platform consists of a system and algorithms that allow environmental and structural monitoring and emergency management. The proposed system consists of a network of wireless sensor nodes that are self-powered by mean of photovoltaic energy harvesters. Two different types of algorithms were designed to monitor the environmental and structural condition (i.e., the vibro-acoustic signature) of different types of structures and infrastructures, and to display, thanks to a dashboard, several predefined alarms, escape routes, safe place, and gathering points. The results presented in the paper refers to the first application of the platform, here tailored for an Italian theme park in the framework of the project "SICURVIA" funded by Regione Calabria, Italy. These results, presented for the first time, show that the platform is able to extract crucial information about the conditions of the thematic park’s assets, and, at the same time, this information are used to recognize an emergency, trigger the related alarm, and provide a plan to manage the extraordinary event happened.

Abstract

The use of non-destructive techniques (NDT) for structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructures is crucial especially for those structures, like buildings and roads, that need efficient and reliable emergency management systems. For this reason, this study aims at designing and validating a new sensor-based NDT platform for SHM, emergency management, and decision support. Different structures of a thematic park have been monitored. The effects of different events (e.g., seismic) and failures (i.e., cracks) have been investigated using a wireless monitoring system consisting in several sensor units (properly placed), wirelessly linked to one controlling unit. The set-up of the software platform has been tuned using the data gathered through in-lab simulations and on-site experiments. Results show that the hardware and software platform paves the way to automatic detection of failures, to identify which infrastructures are still available around the monitored areas, and to generate a proper emergency plan.

Abstract

Natural disasters and the poor management of civil engineering structures and infrastructures require timely action and new tools such as specially designed structural health monitoring platforms. This paper proposes an innovative platform based on a network of wirelessly connected, low-power, and renewable-energy-fed sensor units. The platform is a multipurpose tool for diagnostics, maintenance, and supervision, capable of simultaneously carrying out damage detection, localization, identification, and &ldquo, multiclass&rdquo, and &ldquo, multi-material&rdquo, level quantification of different types of failures. In addition, it works as a decision support tool for emergency management and post-disaster assessment, here tailored for an Italian theme park. The platform uses innovative algorithms based on the concept of the vibro-acoustic signature of the asset monitored. The vibro-acoustic signatures of the monitored assets are gathered by the microphones and accelerometers of the platform&rsquo, s sensor units. Then, almost simultaneously, they are analyzed using specifically designed wavelet-based and convolutional-neural-network-based algorithms, which are able to extract crucial information about the structural and environmental conditions of both the asset and the areas of the thematic park. In addition, the platform shows escape routes during an emergency, indicating meeting points and helping people to proceed safely along a recognizable escape route to a safe place, as demonstrated by the simulations.

Abstract

Methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) is a rare inborn error of metabolism caused by deficiency of the methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (MUT) enzyme. Downstream MUT deficiency, methylmalonic acid accumulates together with toxic metabolites from propionyl-CoA and other compounds upstream of the block in the enzyme pathway. The presentation is with life-threatening acidosis, respiratory distress, brain disturbance, hyperammonemia, and ketosis. Survivors develop poorly understood multi-organ damage, notably to the brain and kidneys. The HEK 293 cell line was engineered by CRISPR/Cas9 technology to knock out the MUT gene (MUT-KO). Shotgun label-free quantitative proteomics and bioinformatics analyses revealed potential damaging biological processes in MUT-deficient cells. MUT-KO induced alteration of cellular architecture and morphology, and ROS overproduction. We found the alteration of proteins involved in cytoskeleton and cell adhesion organization, cell trafficking, mitochondrial, and oxidative processes, as validated by the regulation of VIM, EXT2, SDC2, FN1, GLUL, and CHD1. Additionally, a cell model of MUT-rescuing was developed in order to control the specificity of MUT-KO effects. Globally, the proteomic landscape of MUT-KO suggests the cell model to have an increased susceptibility to propionate- and H2O2-induced stress through an impairment of the mitochondrial functionality and unbalances in the oxidation-reduction processes.
