In this letter, a sub-pm linewidth, high pulse energy and high beam quality microsecond-pulse 766.699 nm Ti:sapphire laser pumped by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser is demonstrated. At an incident pump energy of 824 mJ, the maximum output energy of 132.5 mJ at 766.699 nm with linewidth of 0.66 pm and a pulse width of 100 µs is achieved at a repetition rate of 5 Hz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest pulse energy at 766.699 nm with pulse width of hundred micro-seconds for a Ti:sapphire laser. The beam quality factor M2 is measured to be 1.21. It could be precisely tuned from 766.623 to 766.755 nm with a tuning resolution of 0.8 pm. The wavelength stability is measured to be less than ±0.7 pm over 30 min. The sub-pm linewidth, high pulse energy and high beam quality Ti:sapphire laser at 766.699 nm can be used to create a polychromatic laser guide star together with a home-made 589 nm laser in the mesospheric sodium and potassium layer for the tip-tilt correction resulting in the near-diffraction limited imagery on a large telescope.

The application of a sodium laser guide star is the key difference between a modern adaptive optics system and traditional adaptive optics system. Especially in system such as multiconjugate adaptive optics, a sodium laser guide star asterism that is formed by several laser guide stars in a certain pattern is required to probe more atmospheric turbulence in different directions. To achieve this, a sodium laser guide star asterism launching platform is required. In this paper, we introduce the sodium laser guide star asterism launching platform built and tested on the 1.8 m telescope of Gaomeigu Observatory. The platform has two functions: one function is to compare the performance of sodium laser guide stars generated by different lasers at the same place, and the other function is to generate a sodium laser guide star asterism with an adjustable shape. The field test results at the beginning of 2021 verified the important role of the platform, which is also the first time that a sodium laser guide star asterism was realized in China.

In this paper, we investigated the impact of the linewidth of a QCW pulsed sodium laser on the brightness performance of a generating sodium laser guide star by using the numerical simulation tool PRS. We compared the field test results with the simulation results for two TIPC’s 30W class sodium guide star lasers and found the results are in good agreement which proves the tool can be used for prediction. Then, we used the tool to study the influence of D2b repumping and different linewidths from 10MHz to 1GHz on the coupling efficiency and the photon return flux. For the TIPC’s QCW pulsed solid-state laser, when the on-sky power density is 1 W/m2, the coupling efficiency is 79.6 (photons/s/W/(atoms/m2)) without D2b repumping, however, the value is up to 213.3 (photons/s/W/(atoms/m2)) with 15% D2b enabled and is increased by 168% than the value without D2b; when the power density reaches 10 W/m2, the coupling efficiencies without D2b and with 15% D2b are 66.6 and 233.6 (photons/s/W/(atoms/m2)), respectively. The results show that for the QCW pulsed laser, D2b repumping is necessary. With D2b enabled, if the spectral linewidth is too wide or too narrow, the photon return flux will be adversely affected. The return flux of 60MHz is 52.5% higher than that of 1GHz, while the return flux of 300MHz is 37.8% higher than that of 10 MHz when the laser power is 100W.

A sub-pm linewidth high beam quality microsecond (μs) Ti:sapphire laser was reported, which was end-pumped by a frequency-doubled 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser. By inserting three birefringent plates tuner and one etalon into the cavity of the Ti:sapphire laser, a ∼ 0.8 pm linewidth at 819.710 nm was achieved with a maximum output power of 3 W operating at a high repetition rate of 500 Hz with pulse width of ∼25 μs. The beam quality factor M2 was measured to be ∼1.14. The wavelength could be finely tuned from 819.699 to 819.718 nm with tuning resolution of 0.76 pm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration on the μs pulse Ti:sapphire laser at 819.710 nm with narrow linewidth and high beam quality simultaneously. Such μs 819.710 nm laser could be used to efficiently generate a polychromatic laser guide star together with a 589 nm laser for the tip-tilt correction of ground-based telescopes.

We report the first demonstration on three types of 1.3 μm spectral region in a Q -switched Nd:YAG laser. In order to dissipate the heat deposition effectively to obtain good beam quality, the Nd:YAG rod crystal with 1° cut-angle on end faces is side-pumped by the quasi-continuous-wave pulsed laser diode. A Suprasil etalon is well designed as the intracavity mode-selector to obtain wavelength-tunable single line or power-ratio-controllable dual line operation at 1319 nm and 1338 nm. With the pump pulse width of 200 μs and pump power of 410 W, the acousto-optic Q -switched laser delivered a pulse width of 117 ns at 400 Hz repetition rate, and the M 2 factor was measured to be about 1.87. 1319 nm together with 1338 nm single-wavelength laser achieved an average output power of 47.6 W and 39.9 W with a linewidth of 0.48 nm and 0.32 nm, and a tunable range of 111.2 pm and 108.6 pm, respectively. Among dual-wavelength oscillation, both lines can be tuned at almost equal intensity level with 45.7 W total output power, which is input into an LBO crystal to generate red light of 11.4 W for 659 nm, 6.7 W for 664 nm, and 7.5 W for 669 nm. The 1.3 μm wavelength-selectable operation realized by using the same laser configuration may enhance the application in the fields of tunable lasers and THz frequency generation.

Multiple synthetic beacons are required for atmospheric-turbulence compensation in an extended-field-of-view multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) telescope. In this paper, we report on the first successful implementation of a microsecond-pulse sodium guidestars constellation laser system, based on a small angle precise polarized combining and splitting technology. At Lijiang Observatory of China, four-ways ∼20 W yellow laser beam with kHz repetition-rate and hundred-μs pulse width were projected into the sky through one small-aperture launching telescope, and generated a distinctive four-point grouping on a field of view of 40″ with variable configurations of linear, parallelogram, rhomboid and square. The sodium return signal could easily avoid Rayleigh light interference by the pulse synchro controlling technology delivering a higher spatial resolution. Moreover, the increase in return photons for alternated circularly and alternated linearly polarized light has been investigated. We believe that the above results could serve as a future reference for the MCAO system on large-aperture telescopes worldwide.

We demonstrated a high brightness narrow-linewidth microsecond (μs) pulse green laser from second harmonic generation (SHG) of a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser system. The oscillator was a quasi-continuous wave pulsed diode-side-pumped 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser with an average output power of 45.2 W and a beam quality factor of M2 = 1.21, operating at a pulse repetition frequency of 500 Hz with a ∼160 μs of pulse duration. After a two-stage amplifier, the fundamental output power of MOPA system was increased up to 198 W. Using a type-I lithium triborate nonlinear crystal, the maximum SHG output power of 78.4 W at 532 nm was obtained with a linewidth of 0.54 pm and a beam quality factor M2 less than 1.61. The brightness of the green light was as high as 1.08 × 1010 W/cm2 sr. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest brightness solid state light source for the narrow-linewidth μs pulse green lasers at 532 nm.

A simple and compact polarized light beam splitting system is developed to split one sodium laser beam into multiple beamlets. Here, a polarizing beam splitter and a high reflection mirror is creatively synthesized to be one mirror as the special splitter-and-coupler, whose operation principle is introduced in detail. A Jones matrix model is utilized for theoretical analysis of the amplitude variation and energy distribution of the splitting beamlets. As a result, four yellow beamlets with the power ratio of 1:1:1:1 and orthogonally linearly polarized state are achieved within only 0.002 m2 working area. This approach opens up a new way to generate sodium guidestars constellation for the extended-field-of-view multi-conjugate adaptive optics telescopes.

In the past few years, Chinese astronomical community is actively testing astronomical sites for several new optical/infrared ground-based telescopes. These site testing campaigns conducted were mainly focused on fundamental performances of the site, such as cloud coverage, seeing, temperature, etc. With increasing interests in sodium laser guide star adaptive optics for these new telescopes in the Chinese astronomical community, it is interesting to investigate the performance of the laser guide star at these sites, especially considering that the sodium laser guide star's on-sky performance is significantly influenced by sites' local performances, such as geomagnetic field, sodium layer dynamics, density of air molecule, etc. In this paper, we studied sodium laser guide star's performance of a 20W class Quasi-CW pulsed laser developed by TIPC with numerical simulation for five selected sites in China.

We demonstrated a compact high-efficiency 100-W-level, narrow-linewidth, quasi-continuous-wave (QCW) diode-side-pumped Nd:YAG laser with a linearly polarized TEM00 mode. Spatial hole-burning elimination and narrow-linewidth laser output were realized by a twisted-mode cavity and an etalon, respectively. The resonator was based on a thermally near-unstable cavity design with dual-rod birefringence compensation convex–convex structure. A 100.4-W linear polarized 1064-nm laser was achieved with a 340-W pump power, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 29.5%. The wavelength of the laser was tunable from 1064.22634 to 1064.68071 nm while stably maintaining a beam quality of M2 = 1.22 and a linewidth of ~240 MHz. The laser was operated at a repetition rate of 500 Hz with 160- $\mu \text{s}$ pulse duration. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the highest average-power and the highest brightness for narrow-linewidth QCW microsecond pulse 1064-nm lasers.

The polychromatic laser guide star (PLGS) is one of the solutions proposed to measure the differential atmospheric tip-tilt. A watts-level microsecond pulse all solid state laser source with two wavelengths at 589 and 819.7 nm are developed to perform a proof-of-concept on-sky test for what is believed to be the first time. By sum-frequency of 1319 and 1064 nm, a 44 W maximum average output power at 589.159 nm is generated with the pulse width of ~90 μs at 500 Hz, the linewidth of 0.46 pm, and the beam quality of M2 = 1.50. Meanwhile, a 2.4 W average output power is achieved operating at 819.710 nm with the pulse width of ~25 μs at 500 Hz, the linewidth of 0.8 pm, and beam quality factor of M2 = 1.20, which is end-pumped by a frequency-doubled 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser. We demonstrated a high average power, high beam quality, narrow linewidth, quasicontinuous wave (QCW) diode-pumped 1064-nm Nd:YAG amplifier. A narrow-linewidth QCW pulse Nd:YAG oscillator was employed as the seed laser, providing a maximum average power of 53.4 W at a pulse repetition frequency of 500 Hz and pulse width of 108 μS with a beam quality factor M2 = 1.21. After that, a two-stage double-pass Nd:YAG amplifier was performed. The amplifier delivers a maximum output power of 238 W with a linewidth of 0.4 pm and a tunable range of 119.3 pm. The beam quality was measured to be M2 = 1.65. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the highest average power and the highest brightness for a narrow-linewidth QCW microsecond pulse 1064-nm laser.

A 100 W level kilohertz repetition-rate microsecond (µs)-pulse all-solid-state sodium beacon laser at 589 nm is demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, via combining two independent µs-pulsed lasers. Each beamlet is generated by the sum-frequency mixing of pulsed 1064 and 1319 nm lasers in a lithium triborate (LBO) crystal, which operate at 500 Hz pulse repetition frequency with 61 W p -polarized and 53 W s -polarized output, respectively. An incoherent sequence combining technology of polarized laser beams is employed to add the two beamlets. The average power of the combined beam is up to 107.5 W with a combining efficiency of 94.3%. The combined beam has a 1 kHz repetition rate with ∼ 120 µ s pulse duration and beam quality M 2 = 1.41 . The central wavelength with a linewidth of ∼ 0.3 G H z is locked to a sodium D 2 a absorption line. To the best of our knowledge, this is a record-high power operating at kilohertz for µs-pulsed solid-state sodium beacon lasers.

Sodium laser guide star (LGS) system has become one of the critical components in modern astronomical adaptive optics system (AOS), especially for the next-generation extremely large telescopes, such as the Thirty Meter Telescope and the European Extremely Large Telescope. Since the wavefront detection performance of AOS is directly related to the brightness of LGS, it is important for AOS to maximize its photon generation efficiency by all means. Sodium D-2b line repumping is such a technique that can greatly increase the returned photons for either sodium continuous wave (CW) laser or pulsed laser. This technique has been studied theoretically and field tested with a 20 W CW laser by European Southern Observatory team. However, field test results of a 20 W class pulsed laser with D-2b repumping have not been reported yet. In this paper, our latest field test results with theoretical comparison of D-2b repumping with a 20 W quasi-continuous wave (QCW) pulsed laser will be presented. With a linearly polarized beam, approximate 40% photon return enhancement was achieved when 10% of laser power was detuned to D-2b line, which agreed well with results from a rate equation-based Monte Carlo photon return simulation program. Both experiment and simulation results indicate that with a higher laser intensity projected at the sodium layer, the D-2b repumping will be more effective.

The brightness of the artificial beacon is one critical performance parameter for adaptive optics. Here, a 40-watt level narrow-linewidth microsecond pulsed yellow laser is produced at 589 nm with a high repetition frequency of 600 Hz and a pulse duration of 120 μs. An experiment to project the pulse beam up to the sky and measure the fluorescence photon returns of the Na atoms has been held on the 1.8-meter telescope in Lijiang observatory. During the sky test, a laser guide star (LGS) spot is firstly observed with Rayleigh scattering elimination by means of a gateable pulse format. And, the central wavelength of the laser could be accurately locked to be 589.1584 nm with a linewidth of ~0.34 GHz to match that of sodium-D2a line. Optical pumping with circularly polarized light has also been used to increase the brightness of sodium LGS. In order to maximize the return flux, sodium D2b repumping option is done by an electro-optic modulator with the optimum D2a-D2b frequency offset. As a result, a bright sodium LGS with the return flux of 1610 photons/cm2/s is achieved, corresponding to ~47 photons/cm2/s/W of emitted laser power, which represents a significant improvement in terms of brightness reported ever.

In this letter, a high pulse energy and high beam quality 819.7 nm Ti:sapphire laser pumped by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser is demonstrated. At incident pump energy of 774 mJ, the maximum output energy of 89 mJ at 819.7 nm with a pulse width of 100 μs is achieved at a repetition rate of 5 Hz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest pulse energy at 819.7 nm with pulse width of hundred microseconds for a Ti:sapphire laser. The beam quality factor M 2 is measured to be 1.18. This specific wavelength with the high pulse energy and high beam quality at 819.7 nm is a promising light source to create a polychromatic laser guide star together with a home-made 589 nm laser via exciting the sodium atoms in the mesospheric atmosphere.

A void-free bonding technique was demonstrated for a large slab Nd: YAG crystal with a bonding surface dimension of ∼ 160 m m × 70 m m . By using the novel fluxless oxide layer removal technology, the indium-oxide barrier problem was resolved. With the help of electrochemical-polished indium solder and a plasma-cleaned heat sink, the solderability of the indium was enhanced; in particular, the contact angle of the solder was improved from 51° to 31°. With the largest-bonding-size slab, a single-slab laser created a maximum output power of 7.3 kW under an absorbed pump power of 12.8 kW, corresponding to an optical to optical efficiency of 57% and a slope conversion of 67.8%. By detecting the wavefront of the interferometer before and after bonding, the RMS of wavefront was 0.192 λ and 0.434 λ ( λ = 633 n m ), respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest void-free bonding size for a laser slab and the highest output power achieved from a single-slab crystal laser oscillator.

A large telescope's adaptive optics (AO) system requires one or more bright artificial laser guide stars to improve its sky coverage. The recent advent of a high power sodium laser is perfect for such application. However, besides the output power, other parameters of the laser also have a significant impact on the brightness of the generated sodium laser guide star, mostly in non-linear relationships. When tuning and optimizing these parameters it is necessary to tune based on a laser guide star generation performance metric. Although return photon fluxis widely used, variability of the atmosphere and sodium layer makes it difficult to compare results from different sites or even within a short time period for the same site. A new metric, coupling efficiency, is adopted in our field tests. In this paper, we will introduce our method for measuring the coupling efficiency of a 20W class pulse sodium laser for AO application during field tests that were conducted during 2013–2015.

During 2014-2016, the Laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics (AO) system observation campaign has been carried out on Lijiang 1.8 meter telescope. During the campaign, two generation LGS AO systems have been developed and installed. In 2014, a long-pulsed solid Sodium prototype laser with 20W@400Hz, a beam transfer optical (BTO) system, and a laser launch telescope (LLT) with 300mm diameter were mounted onto the telescope and moved with telescope azimuth journal. At the same time, a 37-elements compact LGS AO system had been mounted on the Bent-Cassegrain focus and got its first light on observing HIP43963 (mV= 8.18mv) and reached Sr=0.27 in J Band after LGS AO compensation. In 2016, the solid Sodium laser has been upgrade to stable 32W@800Hz while D2a plus D2b repumping is used to increase the photon return, and a totally new LGS AO system with 164-elements Deformable Mirror, Linux Real Time Controller, inner closed loop Tip/tilt mirror, Multiple-PMT tracking detector is established and installed on the telescope. And the throughput for the BTO/LLT is improved nearly 20%. The campaign process, the performance of the two LGS AO systems especially the latter one, the characteristics of the BTO/LLT system and the result are present in this paper.

We present results of on-sky tests performed in the summer of 2013 to characterize the performance of a prototype high-power pulsed laser for adaptive optics. The laser operates at a pulse repetition rate (PRR) of 600–800[Formula: see text]Hz, with a 6% duty cycle. Its coupling efficiency was found to be, in the best test case (using 18[Formula: see text]W of transmitted power), [Formula: see text] photons s[Formula: see text] sr[Formula: see text] atom[Formula: see text] W[Formula: see text] m2 when circular polarization was employed and [Formula: see text] photons s[Formula: see text] sr[Formula: see text] atom[Formula: see text] W[Formula: see text] m2 with linear polarization. No improvement was seen when D[Formula: see text] repumping was used, but this is likely due to the relatively large laser guide star (LGS) diameter, typically 10 arcsec or more, which resulted in low irradiance levels. Strong relaxation oscillations were present in the laser output, which have the effect of reducing the coupling efficiency. To better understand the results, a physical modeling was performed using the measured pulse profiles and parameters specific to these tests. The model results, for a 10 arcsec angular size LGS spot, agree well with the observations. When extrapolating the physical model for a sub-arcsecond angular size LGS (typical of what is needed for a successful astronomical guide star), the model predicts that this laser would have a coupling efficiency of 130 photons s[Formula: see text] sr[Formula: see text] atom[Formula: see text] W[Formula: see text] m2, using circular polarization and D[Formula: see text] repumping, for a LGS diameter of 0.6 arcsec Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM), and free of relaxation oscillations in the 589 nm laser light.

A 65 W quasi-continuous-wave microsecond-pulse solid-state sodium beacon laser tuned to the sodium D2a line has been developed with a linewidth of 0.3 GHz, beam quality of M2=1.38, and pulse width of 120 μs at a repetition rate of 500 Hz by sum-frequency mixing 1319 and 1064 nm diode-pumped Nd:YAG master-oscillator power-amplifier systems. The laser wavelength stability is less than ±0.15 GHz through feedback controlling. The laser spiking due to relaxation oscillations is suppressed by inserting frequency doublers in both 1319 and 1064 nm oscillators. Sodium D2b re-pumping is accomplished by tuning the frequency of the electro-optic modulator with the right D2a-D2b offset. A bright sodium laser guide star with a photon return of 1820 photons/cm2/s was achieved with the laser system when a 32 W circular polarized beam was projected to the sky during our field test at the Xinglong Observatory.

We propose and demonstrate a new approach to scale the average output power with narrow linewidth and good beam quality simultaneously for a 1319 nm laser. A polarization and sequence pulsed beam combining technology is developed to add two lasers. Each laser is based on a quasi-continuous-wave diode-pumped Nd:YAG master-oscillator power-amplifier system. One provides output power of 81 W with s-polarization, M 2 = 1.49, and a repetition rate of 500 Hz. Another also operates at 500 Hz, but delivers power of 78 W with M 2 = 1.47 and p-polarization. After combination, a maximum average power of 156 W with beam quality of M 2 = 1.5 is achieved, corresponding to a combining efficiency of 98.1%. The combined beam has a 1 kHz repetition rate with 120 μs pulse duration and ~0.3 GHz linewidth. To the best of our knowledge, this is a record-high output power for the solid-state 1.3 μm lasers. All results indicate the technique of polarization beam in conjunction with sequence pulsed beam combining not only allows the scaling of the laser power while maintaining narrow linewidth and good beam quality, but also is an effective approach for increasing the pulse repetition rate.

A low-timing-jitter high-power semiconductor saturable absorber mirror mode-locked picosecond (ps) 1063 nm Nd:GdVO4 master oscillator power amplifier is presented. Using a single-pass Nd:GdVO4 amplifier, an amplified laser with 21.5 W output power and 8.3 ps pulsewidth was achieved at 250 MHz repetition rate. Employing a servo control, an average RMS timing jitter of ∼222 fs was realized. This laser can be used as a drive laser for photocathode injectors in free-electron lasers.

A frequency stabilization approach is introduced for the microsecond pulse sodium beacon laser using an intra-cavity tilt- and temperature-tuned etalon based on a computer-controlled feedback system connected with a fast high-precision wavelength meter. The frequency stability of the sodium beacon lasers is compared with and without feedback loop controlling. The output wavelength of the laser is locked to the sodium D-2 alpha absorption line (589.159 nm) over 12 h with the feedback loop controlling technology. As a result, the sodium laser guide star is successfully observed by the telescope of National Astronomical Observatories at Xinglong. This approach can also be used for other pulses and continuous-wave lasers for the frequency stabilization.

We demonstrated a high-average-power, narrow-linewidth, quasi-continuous-wave diode-side-pumped 1319 nm Nd:YAG twisted-mode laser oscillator with a linearly polarized TEM00 mode. The resonator is based on a symmetrical convex–convex structure with a two-rod configuration for birefringence compensation, working in a thermally near-unstable cavity. With an optimum cavity length of 940 mm, a 39.4 W linear polarized 1319 nm laser is obtained with a good beam quality of M 2 = 1.21 and a linewidth of ~250 MHz, and the corresponding brightness is as high as 1.55 GW cm−2. The laser is operated at a repetition rate of 500 Hz and pulse duration of 150 µs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest output power 1319 nm laser with narrow-linewidth from diode-pumped Nd:YAG lasers, and is the first report on the twisted-mode laser operation at the 1.3 µm region.

We demonstrate a compact, high-power, quasi-continuous-wave (QCW) end-pumped 1319 nm Nd:YAG slab amplifier laser with good beam quality. The laser is based on a QCW pulse Nd:YAG master oscillator and Nd:YAG slab amplifier with multi-pass zigzag architecture. The amplifier operates at a pulse repetition frequency of 500 Hz and pulse width of ∼105 μs, delivering a maximum output power of 51.5 W under absorbed pump power of 217.8 W and corresponding to an extraction efficiency of 14.2%. The beam quality factor is measured to be Mx2=1.61 and My2=1.81 in the orthogonal directions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first compact, high-power, high-beam-quality QCW Nd:YAG amplifier at 1319 nm based on a multi-pass zigzag slab structure.

A high-pulse-energy high-beam-quality tunable Ti:sapphire laser pumped by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser is demonstrated. Using a fused-silica prism as the dispersion element, a tuning range of 740–855 nm is obtained. At an incident pump energy of 774 mJ, the maximum output energy of 104 mJ at 790 nm with a pulse width of 100 μs is achieved at a repetition rate of 5 Hz. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest pulse energy at 790 nm with pulse width of hundred micro-seconds for an all-solid-state laser. The linewidth of output is 0.5 nm, and the beam quality factor M 2 is 1.16. The high-pulse-energy high-beam-quality tunable Ti:sapphire laser in the range of 740–855 nm can be used to establish a more accurate and consistent absolute scale of second-order optical-nonlinear coefficients for KBe2BO3F2 measured in a wider wavelength range and to assess Miller's rule quantitatively.

A first generation sodium Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics System (LGS-AOS) was developed and integrated into the Lijiang 1.8m telescope in 2013. The LGS-AOS has three sub-systems: (1) a 20 W long pulsed sodium laser, (2) a 300-millimeter-diameter laser launch telescope, and (3) a 37-element compact adaptive optics system. On 2014 January 25, we obtained high resolution images of an mV 8.18 star, HIP 43963, during the first light of the LGS-AOS. In this paper, the sodium laser, the laser launch telescope, the compact adaptive optics system and the first light results will be presented.

We describe the results of our efforts in suppressing spiking of a high power, high beam quality 1319 nm Nd:YAG microsecond-pulse laser with three different intracavity frequency doublers. The 1319 nm laser is generated by a quasi-continuous-wave diode-pumped Nd:YAG ring laser system. One potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP), two KTPs and one lithium triborate (LBO) as frequency doublers are installed in the ring resonator and tested, respectively. At 800 Hz repetition rate, with a pulse width of 100 µs, performances of spiking suppression for each case are observed. The average output power are 23.6 W, 22.7 W and 23.4 W with beam quality factors of M 2 = 2.21, 1.28 and 1.25 for one KTP, two KTPs and one LBO, respectively. The corresponding brightness are 270 MW/(cm2sr), 780 MW/(cm2sr) and 860 MW/(cm2sr). With better beam quality, higher brightness, and easier maintainability, the LBO is the best option of the three. A laser rate equation model including the insertion loss of the doubler is applied for theoretical analysis of the output temporal pulse shape and power, and the simulated results agree well with the experimental data.

A low-timing-jitter high-power semiconductor saturable absorber mirror mode-locked picosecond (ps) 1063 nm Nd:GdVO4 master oscillator power amplifier is presented. Using a single-pass Nd:GdVO4 amplifier, an amplified laser with 21.5 W output power and 8.3 ps pulsewidth was achieved at 250 MHz repetition rate. Employing a servo control, an average RMS timing jitter of ∼222 fs was realized. This laser can be used as a drive laser for photocathode injectors in free-electron lasers.
