Resolving the inner structures of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) provides the "standard ruler" to measure the parallax distances of the Universe and a powerful way to weigh supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Thanks to time-domain observations, it is possible to use the reverberation mapping (RM) technique to measure time delays between different light curves that probe the structures of the SMBH accretion disks and broad line regions (BLRs), which are otherwise often too compact to be spatially resolved for most AGNs. Despite decades of RM studies, the critical physical process that controls the structures of SMBH accretion disk and BLR and their temporal evolution remains unclear. Here we report the variation of the SMBH accretion disk structure of NGC 4151 in response to changes in luminosity within 6 years. In the high-flux state, the time delays measured from our continuum RM with high-cadence (2 days) spectroscopy are 3.8 times larger than that in the low-flux state and 15 times longer than the classical standard thin disk (SSD) prediction. This result provides the first piece of direct evidence that the SMBH disk structure "breathes" in highly-variable AGN manifestations. The time-delay change severely challenges the popular X-ray reprocessing of the SSD model, with or without BLR contributions. More importantly, the continuum time delays can be comparable with the time delay between the broad Hb line and the nearby optical continuum, and the latter is commonly used to calculate the BLR sizes. Hence, the BLR sizes are significantly underestimated if the continuum time delays are not properly considered. This underestimation introduces up to 0.3 dex systematic uncertainties on RM SMBH masses and BLR parallax distances. The emission of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters (SGRs) is believed to be powered by the dissipation of their strong magnetic fields, which coined the name `magnetar'. By combining timing and energy observational results, the magnetar model can be easily appreciated. From a timing perspective, the magnetic field strengths of AXPs and SGRs, calculated assuming dipole radiation, are extremely strong. From an energy perspective, the X-ray/soft gamma-ray luminosities of AXPs and SGRs are larger than their rotational energy loss rates (i.e., $ L_{\rm X}>\dot E_{\rm rot}$). It is thus reasonable to assume that the high-energy radiation comes from magnetic energy decay, and the magnetar model has been extensively discussed (or accepted). However, we argue that: (1) calculating magnetic fields by assuming that rotational energy loss is dominated by dipole radiation (i.e., $\dot{E}_{\rm rot}\simeq\dot{E}_{\mu}$)) may be controversial, and we suggest that the energies carried by outflowing particles should also be considered; and (2) the fact that X-ray luminosity is greater than the rotational energy loss rate does not necessarily mean that the emission energy comes from the magnetic field decaying, which requires further observational testing. Furthermore, some observational facts conflict with the `magnetar' model, such as observations of anti-magnetars, high magnetic field pulsars, and radio and X-ray observations of AXPs/SGRs. We introduce our project, AGNSTRONG (Active Galactic Nuclei and STaR fOrmation in Nearby Galaxies). Our research goals encompass investigating the kinematic properties of ionized and molecular gas outflows, understanding the impact of AGN feedback, and exploring the coevolution dynamics between AGN strength activity and star formation activity. We aim to conduct a thorough analysis to determine whether there is an increase or suppression in SFRs among targets with and without powerful relativistic jets. Our sample consists of 35 nearby AGNs with and without powerful relativistic jet detections. Utilizing sub-millimeter (sub-mm) continuum observations at 450 {\mu}m and 850 {\mu}m from SCUBA-2 at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, we determine star-formation rates (SFRs) for our sources using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting models. Additionally, we employ high-quality, spatially resolved spectra from UV-optical to near-infrared bands obtained with the Double Spectrograph and Triple Spectrograph mounted on the 200-inch Hale telescope at Palomar Observatory to study their multiphase gas outflow properties. This paper presents an overview of our sample selection methodology, research strategy, and initial results of our project. We find that the SFRs determined without including the sub-mm data in the SED fitting are overestimated by approximately 0.08 dex compared to those estimated with the inclusion of sub-mm data. Additionally, we compare the estimated SFRs in our work with those traced by the 4000{\AA} break, as provided by the MPA-JHU catalog. We find that our determined SFRs are systematically higher than those traced by the 4000{\AA} break. Stellar black holes (sBHs) are widely believed to exist in the accretion disks of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Previous studies often focus on the transient emission produced by embedded sBHs. Here, we explore the possible observational consequences of an AGN accretion disk that contains a population of accreting sBHs. Embedded accreting sBHs change the effective temperature distribution of the AGN accretion disk by heating gas in the outer regions. Two possible observational consequences are presented. First, the spectral energy distribution has a turnover feature at $\sim 4700\ \textrm{\AA}$ when the supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass is $\sim 10^8\ M_{\odot}$, which can help explain the observed shallow spectral shape at wavelengths $>5000\ \textrm{\AA}$ for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar composite spectrum. Second, the half-light radius of a given relatively long wavelength is significantly larger than for an AGN disk without sBHs, which can be tested by microlensing observations. With appropriate sBH distributions, the model can be reconciled with quasar microlensing disk sizes. The UV/optical light curves of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are commonly described by the Damped Random Walk (DRW) model. However, the physical interpretation of the damping timescale, a key parameter in the DRW model, remains unclear. Particularly, recent observations indicate a weak dependence of the damping timescale upon both wavelength and accretion rate, clearly being inconsistent with the accretion-disk theory. In this study, we investigate the damping timescale in the framework of the Corona Heated Accretion disk Reprocessing (CHAR) model, a physical model that describes AGN variability. We find that while the CHAR model can reproduce the observed power spectral densities of the 20-year light curves for 190 sources from \cite{Stone2022}, the observed damping timescale, as well as its weak dependence on wavelength, can also be well recovered through fitting the mock light curves with DRW. We further demonstrate that such weak dependence is artificial due to the effect of inadequate durations of light curves, which leads to best-fitting damping timescales lower than the intrinsic ones. After eliminating this effect, the CHAR model indeed yields a strong dependence of the intrinsic damping timescale on the bolometric luminosity and rest-frame wavelength. High-cadence, multiwavelength observations have continuously revealed the diversity of tidal disruption events (TDEs), thus greatly advancing our knowledge and understanding of TDEs. In this work, we conducted an intensive optical-UV and X-ray follow-up campaign of TDE AT2023lli, and found a remarkable month-long bump in its UV/optical light curve nearly two months prior to maximum brightness. The bump represents the longest separation time from the main peak among known TDEs to date. The main UV/optical outburst declines as $t^{-4.10}$, making it one of the fastest decaying optically selected TDEs. Furthermore, we detected sporadic X-ray emission 30 days after the UV/optical peak, accompanied by a reduction in the period of inactivity. It is proposed that the UV/optical bump could be caused by the self-intersection of the stream debris, whereas the primary peak is generated by the reprocessed emission of the accretion process. In addition, our results suggest that episodic X-ray radiation during the initial phase of decline may be due to the patched obscurer surrounding the accretion disk, a phenomenon associated with the inhomogeneous reprocessing process. The double TDE scenario, in which two stars are disrupted in sequence, is also a possible explanation for producing the observed early bump and main peak. We anticipate that the multicolor light curves of TDEs, especially in the very early stages, and the underlying physics can be better understood in the near future with the assistance of dedicated surveys such as the deep high-cadence survey of the 2.5-meter Wide Field Survey Telescope (WFST)., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures,accepted for publication by ApJL

Highly radio-loud quasars (HRLQs; $\log R>2.5$) at $z\gtrsim 4$ show apparent enhanced X-ray emission compared to matched HRLQs at lower redshifts, perhaps due to a redshift-dependent fractional contribution to the X-ray luminosity from inverse-Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons (IC/CMB). Using new {\it Chandra} observations and archival X-ray data, we investigate this phenomenon with an optically flux-limited sample of 41 HRLQs at $z = 4$--5.5 all with sensitive X-ray coverage, the largest sample utilized to date by a wide margin. X-ray enhancements are assessed using X-ray-to-optical flux ratios and spectral energy distributions. We confirm the presence of X-ray enhancements at a 4.9--5.3$\sigma$ significance level, finding that the median factor of enhancement is $\approx 1.8$ at our sample median redshift of $z\approx 4.4$. Under a fractional IC/CMB model, the expected enhancement at lower redshifts is modest; e.g., $\approx 4$% at $z\approx 1.5$. We also investigate a sample of seven radio-loud quasars (RLQs; $\log R>1$) at even higher redshifts of $z=5.6$--6.8, using new and archival X-ray data. These RLQs also show evidence for X-ray enhancements by a median factor of $\approx 2.7$ at a 3.7--4.9$\sigma$ significance level. The X-ray spectral and other properties of these $z=5.6$--6.8 RLQs, however, pose challenges for a straightforward fractional IC/CMB interpretation of their enhancements., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

High-quality Extragalactic Legacy-field Monitoring (HELM) is a long-term observing program that photometrically monitors several well-studied extragalactic legacy fields with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) imager on the CTIO 4m Blanco telescope. Since Feb 2019, HELM has been monitoring regions within COSMOS, XMM-LSS, CDF-S, S-CVZ, ELAIS-S1, and SDSS Stripe 82 with few-day cadences in the $(u)gri(z)$ bands, over a collective sky area of $\sim 38$ deg${\rm ^2}$. The main science goal of HELM is to provide high-quality optical light curves for a large sample of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and to build decades-long time baselines when combining past and future optical light curves in these legacy fields. These optical images and light curves will facilitate the measurements of AGN reverberation mapping lags, as well as studies of AGN variability and its dependences on accretion properties. In addition, the time-resolved and coadded DECam photometry will enable a broad range of science applications from galaxy evolution to time-domain science. We describe the design and implementation of the program and present the first data release that includes source catalogs and the first $\sim 3.5$ years of light curves during 2019A--2022A., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, submitted to ApJS. Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) have been widely observed in black hole X-ray binaries (BHBs), which often exhibit significant X-ray variations. Extensive research has explored the long-term evolution of the properties of QPOs in BHBs. In contrast, such evolution in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has remained largely unexplored due to limited observational data. By using the 10 new XMM-Newton observations for the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy RE J1034+396 from publicly available data, we analyze the characteristics of its X-ray QPOs and examine their long-term evolution. The hard-band (1--4 keV) QPOs are found in all 10 observations and the frequency of these QPOs evolves ranging at $(2.47\text{--}2.83)\times10^{-4}\rm\ Hz$. Furthermore, QPO signals in the soft (0.3--1 keV) and hard bands exhibit strong coherence, although, at times, the variations in the soft band lead those in the hard band (the hard-lag mode), while at other times, it is the reverse (the soft-lag mode). The observations presented here serendipitously captured two ongoing lag reversals within about two weeks, which are first seen in RE J1034+396 and also among all AGNs. A transition in QPO frequency also takes place within a two-week timeframe, two weeks prior to its corresponding lag reversal, indicating a possible coherence between the transitions of QPO frequency and lag mode with delay. "Changing-look" active galactic nuclei (CL-AGNs) challenge our basic ideas about the physics of accretion flows and circumnuclear gas around supermassive black holes. Using first-year Sloan Digital Sky Survey V (SDSS-V) repeated spectroscopy of nearly 29,000 previously known AGNs, combined with dedicated follow-up spectroscopy, and publicly available optical light curves, we have identified 116 CL-AGNs where (at least) one broad emission line has essentially (dis-)appeared, as well as 88 other extremely variable systems. Our CL-AGN sample, with 107 newly identified cases, is the largest reported to date, and includes $\sim0.4\%$ of the AGNs reobserved in first-year SDSS-V operations. Among our CL-AGNs, 67% exhibit dimming while 33% exhibit brightening. Our sample probes extreme AGN spectral variability on months to decades timescales, including some cases of recurring transitions on surprisingly short timescales ($\lesssim 2$ months in the rest frame). We find that CL events are preferentially found in lower-Eddington-ratio ($f_{Edd}$) systems: Our CL-AGNs have a $f_{Edd}$ distribution that significantly differs from that of a carefully constructed, redshift- and luminosity-matched control sample (Anderson-Darling test yielding $p_{\rm AD}\approx 6\times10^{-5}$; median $f_{Edd}\approx0.025$ vs. $0.043$). This preference for low $f_{Edd}$ strengthens previous findings of higher CL-AGN incidence at lower $f_{Edd}$, found in smaller samples. Finally, we show that the broad MgII emission line in our CL-AGN sample tends to vary significantly less than the broad H$\beta$ emission line. Our large CL-AGN sample demonstrates the advantages and challenges in using multi-epoch spectroscopy from large surveys to study extreme AGN variability and physics., Comment: Submitted to ApJ. The Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) is a proposed space-based X-ray telescope for detecting X-ray emissions from the hot gas content in our universe. With its unprecedented spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy and large field of view, the HUBS mission will be uniquely qualified to measure the physical and chemical properties of the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium, the intergalactic medium, and the intracluster medium. These measurements will be valuable for two key scientific goals of HUBS, namely to unravel the AGN and stellar feedback physics that governs the formation and evolution of galaxies, and to probe the baryon budget and multi-phase states from galactic to cosmological scales. In addition to these two goals, the HUBS mission will also help us solve some problems in the fields of galaxy clusters, AGNs, diffuse X-ray backgrounds, supernova remnants, and compact objects. The Wide Field Survey Telescope (WFST) is a dedicated photometric surveying facility being built jointly by the University of Science and Technology of China and the Purple Mountain Observatory. It is equipped with a 2.5-meter diameter primary mirror, an active optics system, and a mosaic CCD camera with 0.73 gigapixels on the primary focal plane for high-quality image capture over an FOV of 6.5-square-degree. It is anticipated that WFST will be set up at the Lenghu site in the summer of 2023 and begin to observe the northern sky in four optical bands (u, g, r, and i) with a range of cadences, from hourly/daily in the Deep High-Cadence Survey (DHS) program to semiweekly in the Wide-Field Survey (WFS) program, three months later. During a photometric night, a nominal 30 s exposure in the WFS program will reach a depth of 22.27, 23.32, 22.84, and 22.31 (AB magnitudes) in these four bands, respectively, allowing for the detection of a tremendous amount of transients in the low-z universe and a systematic investigation of the variability of Galactic and extragalactic objects. In the DHS program, intranight 90 s exposures as deep as 23 (u) and 24 mag (g), in combination with target of opportunity follow-ups, will provide a unique opportunity to explore energetic transients in demand for high sensitivities, including the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave events, supernovae within a few hours of their explosions, tidal disruption events and fast, luminous optical transients even beyond a redshift of unity. In addition, the final 6-year co-added images, anticipated to reach g=25.8 mag in WFS or 1.5 mags deeper in DHS, will be of fundamental importance to general Galactic and extragalactic science. The highly uniform legacy surveys of WFST will serve as an indispensable complement to those of LSST that monitor the southern sky., Comment: 48 pages

Active dwarf galaxies are important because they contribute to the evolution of dwarf galaxies and can reveal their hosted massive black holes. However, the sample size of such sources beyond the local universe is still highly limited. In this work, we search for active dwarf galaxies in the recently completed XMM-Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (XMM-SERVS). XMM-SERVS is currently the largest medium-depth X-ray survey covering 13 $\mathrm{deg}^2$ in three extragalactic fields, which all have well-characterized multi-wavelength information. After considering several factors that may lead to misidentifications, we identify 73 active dwarf galaxies at $z<1$, which constitutes the currently largest X-ray-selected sample beyond the local universe. Our sources are generally less obscured than predictions based on the massive-AGN (active galactic nucleus) X-ray luminosity function and have a low radio-excess fraction. We find that our sources reside in similar environments to inactive dwarf galaxies. We further quantify the accretion distribution of the dwarf-galaxy population after considering various selection effects and find that it decreases with X-ray luminosity, but redshift evolution cannot be statistically confirmed. Depending upon how we define an AGN, the active fraction may or may not show a strong dependence on stellar mass. Their Eddington ratios and X-ray bolometric corrections significantly deviate from the expected relation, which is likely caused by several large underlying systematic biases when estimating the relevant parameters for dwarf galaxies. We explore properties of stellar kinematics and ionized gas in a sample of 1106 local (U)LIRGs from the AKARI telescope. We combine data from $Wide-field\ Infrared\ Survey\ Explorer$ (WISE) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 13 (DR13) to fit the spectral energy distribution (SED) of each source to constrain the contribution of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to the total IR luminosity and estimate physical parameters such as stellar mass and star-formation rate (SFR). We split our sample into AGNs and weak/non-AGNs. We find that our sample is considerably above the main sequence. The highest SFRs and stellar masses are associated with ULIRGs. We also fit the H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ regions to characterize the outflows. We find that the incidence of ionized gas outflows in AGN (U)LIRGs ($\sim$ 72\%) is much higher than that in weak/non-AGN ones ($\sim$ 39\%). The AGN ULIRGs have extreme outflow velocities (up to $\sim$ 2300 km s$^{-1}$) and high mass-outflow rates (up to $\sim$ 60 \solarm~yr$^{-1}$). Our results suggest that starbursts are insufficient to produce such powerful outflows. We explore the correlations of SFR and specific SFR (sSFR) with ionized gas outflows. We find that AGN hosts with the highest SFRs exhibit a negative correlation between outflow velocity and sSFR. The Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) and the VLA survey in the XMM-LSS/VIDEO deep field provide deep ($\approx 15$ ${\mu}$Jybeam$^{-1}$) and high-resolution ($\approx$ 4.5--8 arcsec) radio coverage of the three XMM-SERVS fields (W-CDF-S, ELAIS-S1, and XMM-LSS). These data cover a total sky area of 11.3 deg$^2$ and contain $\approx 11000$ radio components. Furthermore, about 3~deg$^2$ of the XMM-LSS field also has deeper MIGHTEE data that achieve a median RMS of 5.6 ${\mu}$Jy beam$^{-1}$ and detect more than 20000 radio sources. We analyze all these radio data and find source counterparts at other wavebands utilizing deep optical and IR surveys. The nature of these radio sources is studied using radio-band properties (spectral slope and morphology), and the IR-radio correlation. %and spectral energy distribution. Radio AGNs are selected and compared with those selected using other methods (e.g. X-ray). We found 1656 new AGNs that were not selected using X-ray and/or MIR methods. We present a routinized and reliable method to obtain source catalogs from the $\textit{Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array}$ ($\textit{NuSTAR}$) extragalactic surveys of the Extended $\textit{Chandra}$ Deep Field-South (E-CDF-S) and $\textit{Chandra}$ Deep Field-North (CDF-N). The $\textit{NuSTAR}$ E-CDF-S survey covers a sky area of $\approx30'\times30'$ to a maximum depth of $\sim$ 230 ks corrected for vignetting in the 3--24 keV band, with a total of 58 sources detected in our E-CDF-S catalog; the $\textit{NuSTAR}$ CDF-N survey covers a sky area of $\approx7'\times10'$ to a maximum depth of $\sim$ 440 ks corrected for vignetting in the 3--24 keV band, with a total of 42 sources detected in our CDF-N catalog that is produced for the first time. We verify the reliability of our two catalogs by crossmatching them with the relevant catalogs from the $\textit{Chandra}$ X-ray observatory, and find that the fluxes of our $\textit{NuSTAR}$ sources are generally consistent with that of their $\textit{Chandra}$ counterparts. Our two catalogs are produced following the exactly same method and made publicly available, thereby providing a uniform platform that facilitates further studies involving these two fields. We investigate the extreme X-ray variability of a z = 1.608 active galactic nucleus in the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South (XID 403), which showed two significant X-ray brightening events. In the first event, XID 403 brightened by a factor of $>2.5$ in $\lesssim6.1$ rest-frame days in the observed-frame 0.5-5 keV band. The event lasted for $\approx5.0\textrm{-}7.3$ days, and then XID 403 dimmed by a factor of $>6.0$ in $\lesssim6.1$ days. After $\approx1.1\textrm{-}2.5$ years in the rest frame (including long observational gaps), it brightened again with the 0.5-5 keV flux increasing by a factor of $>12.6$. The second event lasted over 251 days and the source remained bright until the end of the 7 Ms exposure. The spectrum is a steep power law (photon index $\Gamma=2.8\pm0.3$) without obscuration during the second outburst, and the rest-frame 2-10 keV luminosity reaches $1.5^{+0.8}_{-0.5}\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$; there is no significant spectral evolution within this epoch. The infrared-to-UV spectral energy distribution of XID 403 is dominated by the host galaxy. There is no significant optical/UV variability and $R$-band (rest-frame $\approx2500$ $\unicode{xC5}$) brightening contemporaneous with the X-ray brightening. The extreme X-ray variability is likely due to two X-ray unveiling events, where the line of sight to the corona is no longer shielded by high-density gas clumps in a small-scale dust-free absorber. XID 403 is probably a high-redshift analog of local narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, and the X-ray absorber is a powerful accretion-disk wind. We present a study of the relation between the [OIII] 5007A emission line width (sigma_{[OIII]}) and stellar velocity dispersion (sigma_{*}), utilizing a sample of 740 type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with high-quality spectra at redshift z < 1.0. We find the broad correlation between the core component of [OIII] emission line width (sigma_{[OIII,core]}) and sigma_{*} with a scatter of 0.11~dex for the low redshift (z < 0.1) sample; for redshift (0.3 < z < 1.0) AGNs, the scatter is larger, being 0.16~dex. We also find that the Eddington ratio (L_{bol}/L_{Edd}) may play an important role in the discrepancies between sigma_{[OIII,core]} and sigma_{*}. As the L_{bol}/L_{Edd} increases, sigma_{[OIII,core]} tends to be larger than sigma_{*}. By classifying our local sample with different minor-to-major axis ratios, we find that sigma_{*} is larger than sigma_{[OIII,core]} for those edge-on spiral galaxies. In addition, we also find that the effects of outflow strength properties such as maximum outflow velocity (V_{max}) and the broader component of [OIII] emission line width and line shift (sigma_{[OIII,out]} and V_{[OIII,out]}) may play a major role in the discrepancies between sigma_{[OIII,core]} and sigma_{*}. The discrepancies between sigma_{[OIII,core]} and sigma_{*} are larger when V_{max}, V_{[OIII,out]}, and sigma_{[OIII,out]} increase. Our results show that the outflow strengths may have significant effects on the differences between narrow-line region gas and stellar kinematics in AGNs. We suggest that caution should be taken when using sigma_{[OIII,core]} as a surrogate for sigma_{*}. We investigate the ionized gas kinematics relationship with X-ray, radio and accreting properties using a sample of 348 nearby ($z < 0.4$) SDSS-FIRST-X-ray detected AGNs. X-ray properties of our sample are obtained from XMM-$Newton$, $Swift$ and $Chandra$ observations. We unveil the ionized gas outflows in our sample manifested by the non-gravitational broad component in [OIII] $\lambda$5007$\overset{\circ}{A}$. emission line profiles. From the comparison of the correlation of non-parametric outflow velocities (i.e., the velocity width, the maximal velocity of outflow and line dispersion) with X-ray luminosity and radio luminosity, we find that outflow velocities have similarly positive {correlations} with both X-ray and radio luminosity. After correcting for the gravitational component, we find that the [OIII] velocity dispersion normalized by stellar mass also increases with both X-ray luminosity and radio luminosity. We also find that for a given X-ray (radio) luminosity, radio (X-ray) luminous AGNs have higher outflow velocities than non-radio (non-X-ray) luminous AGNs. Therefore, we find no clear preference between X-ray luminosity and radio luminosity in driving high-velocity ionized outflows and conclude that both AGN activity and small-scale jets contribute comparably. Moreover, there is no evidence that our obscured AGNs are preferentially associated with higher velocity outflows. Finally, we find a turning point around log$(\lambda_{Edd}) \simeq -1.3$ when we explore the dependency of outflow velocity on Eddington ratio. We report results for a complete sample of ten luminous radio-quiet quasars with large C IV equivalent widths (EW > 150 A). For 8/10 we performed Chandra snapshot observations. We find that, in addition to the enhanced C IV line EW, their He II and Mg II lines are enhanced, but the C III] line is not. Their X-ray emission is substantially stronger than expected from their ultraviolet luminosity. Additionally, these large C IV EW quasars show small C IV blueshifts and possibly low Eddington ratios, suggesting they are "extreme low Eigenvector 1 (EV1)" quasars. The mean excess He II EW is well-matched by Radiation Pressure Compression (RPC) photoionization models, with the harder aox ionizing spectrum. However, these results do not reproduce well the enhancement pattern of the C IV, Mg II, and C III] EWs, or the observed high C IV/Mg II ratio. RPC calculations indicate that the C IV/Mg II line ratio is an effective metallicity indicator, and models with sub-Solar metallicity gas and a hard ionizing continuum reproduce well the enhancement pattern of all four ultraviolet lines. We find that the C IV/Mg II line ratio in quasars is generally correlated with the excess X-ray emission. Extremely high EV1 quasars are characterized by high metallicity and suppressed X-ray emission. The underlying mechanism relating gas metallicity and X-ray emission is not clear, but may be related to radiation-pressure driven disk winds, which are enhanced at high metallicity, and consequent mass loading reducing coronal X-ray emission., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

W-CDF-S, ELAIS-S1, and XMM-LSS will be three Deep-Drilling Fields (DDFs) of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), but their extensive multi-wavelength data have not been fully utilized as done in the COSMOS field, another LSST DDF. To prepare for future science, we fit source spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from X-ray to far-infrared in these three fields mainly to derive galaxy stellar masses and star-formation rates. We use CIGALE v2022.0, a code that has been regularly developed and evaluated, for the SED fitting. Our catalog includes 0.8 million sources covering $4.9~\mathrm{deg^2}$ in W-CDF-S, 0.8 million sources covering $3.4~\mathrm{deg^2}$ in ELAIS-S1, and 1.2 million sources covering $4.9~\mathrm{deg^2}$ in XMM-LSS. Besides fitting normal galaxies, we also select candidates that may host active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or are experiencing recent star-formation variations and use models specifically designed for these sources to fit their SEDs; this increases the utility of our catalog for various projects in the future. We calibrate our measurements by comparison with those in well-studied smaller regions and briefly discuss the implications of our results. We also perform detailed tests of the completeness and purity of SED-selected AGNs. The shape of the ambient circumnuclear medium (ACM) density profile can probe the history of accretion onto the central supermassive black hole in galaxies and the circumnuclear environment. However, due to the limitation of the instrument resolution, the density profiles of the ACM for most of galaxies remain largely unknown. In this work, we propose a novel method to measure the ACM density profile of active galactic nucleus (AGN) by the equilibrium between the radiation pressure on the warm absorbers (WAs, a type of AGN outflows) and the drag pressure from the ACM. We study the correlation between the outflow velocity and ionization parameter of WAs in each of the five Seyfert 1 galaxies (NGC 3227, NGC 3783, NGC 4051, NGC 4593, and NGC 5548), inferring that the density profile of the ACM is between n\propto r^-1.7 and n \propto r^-2.15 (n is number density and r is distance) from 0.01 pc to pc scales in these five AGNs. The Chandra Deep Field-South and North surveys (CDFs) provide unique windows into the cosmic history of X-ray emission from normal (non-active) galaxies. Scaling relations of normal galaxy X-ray luminosity (L_X) with star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass (M_star) have been used to show that the formation rates of low-mass and high-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs and HMXBs, respectively) evolve with redshift across z = 0-2 following L_HMXB/SFR ~ 1 + z and L_LMXB/M_star ~ (1 + z)^{2-3}. However, these measurements alone do not directly reveal the physical mechanisms behind the redshift evolution of X-ray binaries (XRBs). We derive star-formation histories for a sample of 344 normal galaxies in the CDFs, using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting of FUV-to-FIR photometric data, and construct a self-consistent, age-dependent model of the X-ray emission from the galaxies. Our model quantifies how X-ray emission from hot gas and XRB populations vary as functions of host stellar-population age. We find that (1) the ratio L_X/M_star declines by a factor of ~1000 from 0-10 Gyr and (2) the X-ray SED becomes harder with increasing age, consistent with a scenario in which the hot gas contribution to the X-ray SED declines quickly for ages above 10 Myr. When dividing our sample into subsets based on metallicity, we find some indication that L_X/M_star is elevated for low-metallicity galaxies, consistent with recent studies of X-ray scaling relations. However, additional statistical constraints are required to quantify both the age and metallicity dependence of X-ray emission from star-forming galaxies.

The coevolution between supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies has been proposed for more than a decade, albeit with little direct evidence about black hole accretion activities regulating galaxy star formation at $z>1$. In this paper, we study the lifetimes of X-ray active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in $UV$-selected red sequence (RS), blue cloud (BC) and green valley (GV) galaxies, finding that AGN accretion activities are most prominent in GV galaxies at $z\sim1.5-2$, compared with RS and BC galaxies. We also compare AGN accretion timescales with typical color transition timescales of $UV$-selected galaxies. We find that the lifetime of GV galaxies at $z\sim1.5-2$ is very close to the typical timescale when the AGNs residing in them stay in the high-accretion-rate mode at these redshifts; for BC galaxies, the consistency between the color transition timescale and the black hole strong accretion lifetime is more likely to happen at lower redshifts ($z<1$). Our results support the scenario where AGN accretion activities govern $UV$ color transitions of host galaxies, making galaxies and their central SMBHs coevolve with each other., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures. The relation between warm absorber (WA) outflows of AGN and nuclear obscuration activities caused by optically-thick clouds (obscurers) crossing the line of sight is unclear. NGC 3227 is a suitable target to study the properties of both WAs and obscurers, because it matches the following selection criteria: WAs in both ultraviolet (UV) and X-rays, suitably variable, bright in UV and X-rays, good archival spectra for comparing with the obscured spectra. To investigate WAs and obscurers of NGC~3227, we used a broadband spectral-energy-distribution model built in our Paper I and the photoionization code of SPEX software to fit archival XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations in 2006 and 2016. Using unobscured observations, we find four WAs with different ionization states (log$\xi$ [erg cm/s]~-1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0). The highest-ionization WA has a higher hydrogen column density (~$10^{22}$/cm$^2$) than the other three WAs (~$10^{21}$/cm$^2$). Their outflow velocities range from 100 to 1300 km/s, and show a positive correlation with the ionization parameter. These WAs are estimated to be between the outer broad-line-region (BLR) and the narrow line region. Besides, we find an X-ray obscuration event in 2006, which was missed by previous studies. It can be explained by a single obscurer. We also study the previously published obscuration event in 2016, which needs two obscurers in the fit. A high-ionization obscurer (log$\xi$~2.80; covering factor $C_f$~30%) only appears in 2016, which has a high column density (~$10^{23}$/cm$^2$). A low-ionization obscurer (log$\xi$~1.0-1.9; $C_f$~20%-50%) exists in both 2006 and 2016, which has a lower column density (~$10^{22}$/cm$^2$). These obscurers are estimated to be in the BLR by their crossing time of transverse motions. We measure the evolution of the $M_{\rm BH}-M_*$ relation using 584 uniformly-selected SDSS quasars at $0.2

We characterize the ionized gas outflows in 15 low-redshift star-forming galaxies, a Valpara\'iso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES) subsample, using MUSE integral field spectroscopy and GAMA photometric broadband data. We measure the emission-line spectra by fitting a double-component profile, with the second and broader component being related to the outflowing gas. This interpretation is in agreement with the correlation between the observed star-formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}$) and the second-component velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{\mathrm{2nd}}$), expected when tracing the feedback component. By modelling the broadband spectra with spectra energy distribution (SED) fitting and obtaining the star-formation histories of the sample, we observe a small decrease in SFR between 100 and 10 Myr in galaxies when the outflow H$\alpha$ luminosity contribution is increased, indicating that the feedback somewhat inhibits the star formation within these timescales. The observed emission-line ratios are best reproduced by photoionization models when compared to shock-ionization, indicating that radiation from young stellar population is dominant, and seems to be a consequence of a continuous star-formation activity instead of a bursty event. The outflow properties such as mass outflow rate ($\sim 0.1\,$M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$), outflow kinetic power ($\sim 5.2 \times 10^{-4}\% L_{\mathrm{bol}}$) and mass loading factor ($\sim 0.12$) point towards a scenario where the measured feedback is not strong and has a low impact on the evolution of galaxies in general., Comment: 33 pages, 31 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication by A&A. The relationship between quasars and their host galaxies provides clues on how supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and massive galaxies are jointly assembled. To elucidate this connection, we measure the structural and photometric properties of the host galaxies of ~5000 SDSS quasars at 0.2

Inconsistent conclusions are obtained from recent active galactic nuclei (AGNs) accretion disk inter-band time-lag measurements. While some works show that the measured time lags are significantly larger (by a factor of $\sim 3$) than the theoretical predictions of the Shakura \& Sunyaev disk (SSD) model, others find that the time-lag measurements are consistent with (or only slightly larger than) that of the SSD model. These conflicting observational results might be symptoms of our poor understanding of AGN accretion physics. Here we show that sources with larger-than-expected time lags tend to be less-luminous AGNs. Such a dependence is unexpected if the inter-band time lags are attributed to the light-travel-time delay of the illuminating variable X-ray photons to the static SSD. If, instead, the measured inter-band lags are related not only to the static SSD but also to the outer broad emission-line regions (BLRs; e.g., the blended broad emission lines and/or diffuse continua), our result indicates that the contribution of the non-disk BLR to the observed UV/optical continuum decreases with increasing luminosity ($L$), i.e., an anti-correlation resembling the well-known Baldwin effect. Alternatively, we argue that the observed dependence might be a result of coherent disk thermal fluctuations as the relevant thermal timescale, $\tau_{\mathrm{TH}}\propto L^{0.5}$. We present an estimation of lifetimes of massive galaxies with distinct UV colors at $0.5 \le z \le 2.5$ in the COSMOS/UltraVISTA field. After dividing the galaxy sample into subsamples of red sequence (RS), blue cloud (BC), and green valley (GV) galaxies in different redshift bins, according to their rest-frame extinction-corrected UV colors, we derive their lifetimes using clustering analyses. Several essentials that may influence the lifetime estimation have been explored, including the dark matter (DM) halo mass function (HMF), the width of redshift bin, the growth of DM halos within each redshift bin, and the stellar mass. We find that the HMF difference results in scatters of $\sim0.2$ dex on lifetime estimation; adopting a redshift bin width of $\Delta z = 0.5$ is good enough to estimate the lifetime; and no significant effect on lifetime estimation is found due to the growth of DM halos within each redshift bin. The galaxy subsamples with higher stellar masses generally have shorter lifetimes; however, the lifetimes among different subsamples at z > 1:5 tend to be independent of stellar mass. Consistently, the clustering-based lifetime for each galaxy subsample agrees well with that inferred using the spectral energy distribution modeling. Moreover, the lifetimes of the RS and BC galaxies also coincide well with their typical gas depletion timescales attributed to the consumption of star formation. Interestingly, the distinct lifetime behaviors of the GV galaxies at $z \le 1.5$ and $z>1.5$ can not be fully accounted for by their gas depletion timescales. Instead, this discrepancy between the lifetimes and gas depletion timescales of the GV galaxies suggests that there are additional physical processes, such as feedback of active galactic nuclei, accelerating the quenching of GV galaxies at high redshifts., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, accept for publication in ApJ

Context. Spatially resolved observations of the ionized and molecular gas are critical for understanding the physical processes that govern the interstellar medium (ISM) in galaxies. Aims. To study the morpho-kinematic properties of the ionized and molecular gas in three dusty starburst galaxies at $z = 0.12-0.17$ to explore the relation between molecular ISM gas phase dynamics and the star-formation activity. Methods. We analyse $\sim$kpc-scale ALMA CO(1--0) and seeing limited SINFONI Paschen-$\alpha$ observations. We use a dynamical mass model, which accounts for beam-smearing effects, to constrain the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor. Results. One starburst galaxy shows irregular morphology which may indicate a major merger, while the other two systems show disc-like morpho-kinematics. The two disc-like starbursts show molecular gas velocity dispersion values comparable with that seen in local LIRG/ULIRGs, but in an ISM with molecular gas fraction and surface density values consistent to that reported for local star-forming galaxies. These molecular gas velocity dispersion values can be explained by assuming vertical pressure equilibrium. The star-formation activity is correlated with the molecular gas content suggesting depletion times of the order of $\sim 0.1-1$ Gyr. The star formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) correlates with the ISM pressure set by self-gravity ($P_{\rm grav}$) following a power law with an exponent close to 0.8. Conclusions. In dusty disc-like starburst galaxies, our data support the scenario in which the molecular gas velocity dispersion values are driven by the ISM pressure set by self-gravity, responsible to maintain the vertical pressure balance. The rest-frame UV/optical variability of the quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 is used to test the Corona-Heated Accretion-disk Reprocessing (CHAR) model of Sun et al. 2020. We adopt our CHAR model and the observed black-hole masses ($M_{\mathrm{BH}}$) and luminosities ($L$) to generate mock light curves that share the same measurement noise and sampling as the real observations. Without any fine-tuning, our CHAR model can satisfactorily reproduce the observed ensemble structure functions for different $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$, $L$, and rest-frame wavelengths. Our analyses reveal that a luminosity-dependent bolometric correction is disfavored over the constant bolometric correction for UV/optical luminosities. By using a large highly obscured ($N_{\rm H} > 10^{23}\ \rm cm^{-2}$) AGN sample (294 sources at $z \sim 0-5$) selected from detailed X-ray spectral analyses in the deepest Chandra surveys, we explore distributions of these X-ray sources in various optical/IR/X-ray color-color diagrams and their host-galaxy properties, aiming at characterizing the nuclear obscuration environment and the triggering mechanism of highly obscured AGNs. We find that the refined IRAC color-color diagram fails to identify the majority of X-ray selected highly obscured AGNs, even for the most luminous sources with ${\rm log}\,L_{\rm X}\, \rm (erg\ s^{-1}) > 44$. Over 80% of our sources will not be selected as heavily obscured candidates using the flux ratio of $f_{\rm 24 \mu m}\, /\,f_R > 1000$ and $R - K > 4.5$ criteria, implying complex origins and conditions for the obscuring materials that are responsible for the heavy X-ray obscuration. The average star formation rate of highly obscured AGNs is similar to that of stellar mass- ($M_*$-) and $z$-controlled normal galaxies, while the lack of quiescent hosts is observed for the former. Partial correlation analyses imply that highly obscured AGN activity (traced by $L_{\rm X}$) appears to be more fundamentally related to $M_*$, and no dependence of $N_{\rm H}$ on either $M_*$ or SFR is detected. Morphology analyses reveal that 61% of our sources have a significant disk component, while only 27% of them exhibit irregular morphological signatures. We present single-epoch black-hole mass (\mbh) estimators based on the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) \MgII\ 2798\AA\ and optical \Hb\ 4861\AA\ emission lines. To enlarge the luminosity range of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we combine the 31 reverberation-mapped AGNs with relatively low luminosities from Bahk et al. 2019, 47 moderate-luminosity AGNs from Woo et al. 2018, and 425 high-luminosity AGNs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The combined sample has the monochromatic luminosity at 5100\AA\ ranging $\mathrm{\log \lambda L_{5100} \sim 41.3-46.5}$ \ergs, over the range of 5.5 $<$ $\log$\mbh\ $<$ 9.5. Based on the fiducial mass from the line dispersion or full width half maximum (FWHM) of \Hb\ paired with continuum luminosity at 5100\AA, we calibrate the best-fit parameters in the black hole mass estimators using the \MgII\ line. We find that the differences in the line profiles between \MgII\ and \Hb\ have significant effects on calibrating the UV \mbh\ estimators. By exploring the systematic discrepancy between the UV and optical \mbh\ estimators as a function of AGN properties, we suggest to add correction term $\Delta$M = -1.14 $\rm \log(FWHM_{MgII}/\sigma_{MgII}$) + 0.33 in the UV mass estimator equation. We also find a $\sim$0.1 dex bias in the \mbh\ estimation due to the difference of the spectral slope in the 2800-5200 \AA\ range. Depending on the selection of \mbh\ estimator based on either line dispersion or FWHM and either continuum or line luminosity, the derived UV mass estimators show >~0.1 dex intrinsic scatter with respect to the fiducial \Hb\ based \mbh., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables. The dusty torus plays a vital role in unifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, the physical structure of the torus remains largely unclear. Here we present a systematical investigation of the torus mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopic feature, i.e., the 9.7 um silicate line, of $175$ AGNs selected from the Swift/BAT Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). Our sample is constructed to ensure that each of the $175$ AGNs has Spizter/IRS MIR, optical, and X-ray spectroscopic coverage. Therefore, we can simultaneously measure the silicate strength, optical emission lines, and X-ray properties (e.g., the column density and the intrinsic X-ray luminosity). We show that, consistent with previous works, the silicate strength is weakly correlated with the hydrogen column density ($N_\mathrm{H}^\mathrm{X}$), albeit with large scatters. For X-ray unobscured AGNs, the silicate-strength-derived $V$-band extinction and the broad-H$\alpha$-inferred one are both small; however, for X-ray obscured AGNs, the former is much larger than the latter. In addition, we find that the optical type 1 AGNs with strong X-ray absorption on average show significant silicate absorption, indicating that their X-ray absorption might not be caused by dust-free gas in the broad-line region. Our results suggest that the distribution and structure of the obscuring dusty torus are likely to be very complex. We investigate the intrinsic spectral energy distribution (SED) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at infrared (IR) bands with 42 $z < 0.5$ optically luminous Palomar Green survey quasars through SED decomposition. We decompose the SEDs of the 42 quasars by combining an AGN IR template library Siebenmorgen2015 that covers a wide range of the AGN parameter space with three commonly used galaxy template libraries. We determine the median AGN SED from the best-fitting results. The far-IR (FIR) contribution of our median AGN SED is significantly smaller than that of Symeonidis et al. 2016, but roughly consistent with that of Lyu et al. 2017. The AGN IR SED becomes cooler with increasing bolometric luminosity, which might be due to that more luminous AGNs might have stronger radiative feedback to change torus structures and/or their tori might have higher metallicities. Our conclusions do not depend on the choice of galaxy template libraries. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have long been observed to "twinkle" (i.e., their brightness varies with time) on timescales from days to years in the UV/optical bands. Such AGN UV/optical variability is essential for probing the physics of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), the accretion disk, and the broad-line region. Here we show that the temperature fluctuations of an AGN accretion disk, which is magnetically coupled with the corona, can account for observed high-quality AGN optical light curves. We calculate the temperature fluctuations by considering the gas physics of the accreted matter near the SMBH. We find that the resulting simulated AGN UV/optical light curves share the same statistical properties as the observed ones as long as the dimensionless viscosity parameter $\alpha$, which is widely believed to be controlled by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in the accretion disk, is about $0.01$---$0.2$. Moreover, our model can simultaneously explain the larger-than-expected accretion disk sizes and the dependence of UV/optical variability upon wavelength for NGC 5548. Our model also has the potential to explain some other observational facts of AGN UV/optical variability, including the timescale-dependent bluer-when-brighter color variability and the dependence of UV/optical variability on AGN luminosity and black hole mass. Our results also demonstrate a promising way to infer the black-hole mass, the accretion rate, and the radiative efficiency, thereby facilitating understanding of the gas physics and MHD turbulence near the SMBH and its cosmic mass growth history by fitting the AGN UV/optical light curves in the era of time-domain astronomy., Comment: 25 pages, 25 figures. The spectral energy distribution of blazars around the synchrotron peak can be well described by the log-parabolic model that has three parameters: peak energy ($E_\textrm{p}$), peak luminosity ($L_\textrm{p}$) and the curvature parameter ($b$). It has been suggested that $E_\textrm{p}$ shows relations with $L_\textrm{p}$ and $b$ in several sources, which can be used to constrain the physical properties of the emitting region and/or acceleration processes of the emitting particles. We systematically study the $E_\textrm{p}$-$L_\textrm{p}$ and $E_\textrm{p}$-(1$/b$) relations for 14 BL Lac objects using the 3-25~keV $RXTE$/PCA and 0.3-10~keV $Swift$/XRT data. Most objects (9/14) exhibit positive $E_\textrm{p}$-$L_\textrm{p}$ correlations, three sources show no correlation, and two sources display negative correlations. In addition, most targets (7/14) present no correlation between $E_\textrm{p}$ and 1$/b$, five sources pose negative correlations, and two sources demonstrate positive correlations. 1ES~1959+650 displays two different $E_\textrm{p}$-$L_\textrm{p}$ relations in 2002 and 2016. We also analyze $E_\textrm{p}$-$L_\textrm{p}$ and $E_\textrm{p}$-(1$/b$) relations during flares lasting for several days. The $E_\textrm{p}$-$L_\textrm{p}$ relation does not exhibit significant differences between flares, while the $E_\textrm{p}$-(1$/b$) relation varies from flare to flare. For the total sample, when $L_\textrm{p}$ < $\textrm{10}^\textrm{45}\ \textrm{erg}\ \textrm{s}^\textrm{-1}$, there seems to be a positive $E_\textrm{p}$-$L_\textrm{p}$ correlation. $L_\textrm{p}$ and the slope of $E_\textrm{p}$-$L_\textrm{p}$ relation present an anti-correlation, which indicates that the causes of spectral variations might be different between luminous and faint sources. $E_\textrm{p}$ shows a positive correlation with the black hole mass. Two bright X-ray transients were reported from the Chandra Deep Field South archival data, namely CDF-S XT1 and XT2. Whereas the nature of the former is not identified, the latter was suggested as an excellent candidate for a rapidly spinning magnetar born from a binary neutron star (BNS) merger. Here we propose a unified model to interpret both transients within the framework of the BNS merger magnetar model. According to our picture, CDF-S XT2 is observed from the "free zone" where the magnetar spindown powered X-ray emission escapes freely, whereas CDF-S XT1 originates from the "trapped zone" where the X-ray emission is initially blocked by the dynamical ejecta and becomes transparent after the ejecta is pushed to a distance where Thomson optical depth drops below unity. We fit the magnetar model to the light curves of both transients and derived consistent parameters for the two events, with magnetic field, initial spin period and X-ray emission efficiency being ($B_p=10^{16}\,G$, $P=1.2\,\rm ms$, $\eta = 0.001$) and ($B_p=10^{15.8}\,G$, $P=4.4\, \rm ms$, $\eta = 0.001$) for XT1 and XT2, respectively. The "isotropic equivalent" ejecta mass of XT1 is $M_{\rm ej} \sim 10^{-3}$ $M_{\odot}$, while it is not constrained for XT2. Our results suggest that more extreme magnetar parameters are required to have XT1 detected from the trapped zone. The model parameters for both events are generally consistent with those derived from SGRB X-ray plateau observations. The host galaxy properties of both transients are also consistent with those of SGRBs. Most bulge-dominated galaxies host black holes with masses that tightly correlate with the masses of their bulges. This may indicate that the black holes may regulate galaxy growth or vice versa, or that they may grow in lock-step. The quest to understand how, when, and where those black-holes formed motivates much of extragalactic astronomy. Here we focus on a population of galaxies with active black holes in their nuclei (active galactic nuclei or AGN), that are fully or partially hidden by dust and gas: the emission from the broad line region is either completely or partially obscured with a visual extinction of 1 or above. This limit, though not yet precise, appears to be the point at which the populations of AGN may evolve differently. We highlight the importance of finding and studying those dusty AGN at redshifts between 1 and 3, the epoch when the universe may have gone through its most dramatic changes. We emphasize the need for future large multiplexed spectroscopic instruments that can perform dedicated surveys in the optical and NIR to pin down the demographics of such objects and study their reddening properties, star-formation histories, and excitation conditions. We report the discovery of large-amplitude mid-infrared variabilities (MIR; $\sim 0.3$ mag) in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer W1 and W2 bands of the low-luminosity narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy WPVS 007, which exhibits prominent and varying broad-absorption lines (BALs) with blueshifted velocity up to $\rm \sim 14000\ km\ s^{-1}$. The observed significant MIR variability, the UV to optical color variabilities in the Swift bands that deviate from the predictions of pure dust attenuation models, and the fact that Swift light curves can be well fitted by the stochastic AGN variability model suggest that its observed flux variabilities in UV-optical-MIR bands should be intrinsic, rather than owing to variable dust extinction. Furthermore, the variations of BAL features (i.e., trough strength and maximum velocity) and continuum luminosity are concordant. Therefore, we propose that the BAL variability observed in WPVS 007 is likely induced by the intrinsic ionizing continuum variation, alternative to the rotating-torus model proposed in a previous work. The BAL gas in WPVS 007 might be in the low-ionization state as traced by its weak N V BAL feature; as the ionizing continuum strengthens, the Ci IV and Si IV column densities also increase, resulting in stronger BALs and the emergence of high-velocity components of the outflow. The outflow launch radius might be as small as $\sim 8 \times 10^{-4}$ pc under the assumption of being radiatively driven, but a large-scale origin (e.g., torus) cannot be fully excluded because of the unknown effects from additional factors, e.g., the magnetic field., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The unified model of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) proposes that different AGN optical spectral types are caused by different viewing angles with respect to an obscuring 'torus'. Therefore, this model predicts that type 1 and type 2 AGNs should have similar host-galaxy properties. We investigate this prediction with 2463 X-ray selected AGNs in the COSMOS field. We divide our sample into type 1 and type 2 AGNs based on their spectra, morphologies, and variability. We derive their host-galaxy stellar masses ($M_\star$) through SED fitting, and find that the host $M_\star$ of type 1 AGNs tend to be slightly smaller than those of type 2 AGNs by $\Delta\overline{\mathrm{log}M_\star}\approx0.2~\mathrm{dex}$ ($\approx 4\sigma$ significance). Besides deriving star-formation rates (SFRs) from SED fitting, we also utilize far-infrared (FIR) photometry and a stacking method to obtain FIR-based SFRs. We find that the SFRs of type 1 and type 2 sources are similar once their redshifts and X-ray luminosities are controlled. We also investigate cosmic environment, and find that the surface number densities (sub-Mpc) and cosmic-web environments ($\approx 1\text{--}10$~Mpc) are similar for both populations. In summary, our analyses show that the host galaxies of type 1 and type 2 AGNs have similar SFR and cosmic environment in general, but the former tend to have lower $M_\star$ than the latter. The difference in $M_\star$ indicates that the AGN unification model is not strictly correct and both host galaxy and torus may contribute to the optical obscuration of AGNs., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of 1152 AGNs selected in the Chandra Deep Fields (CDFs), in order to identify highly obscured AGNs ($N_{\rm H} > 10^{23}\ \rm cm^{-2}$). By fitting spectra with physical models, 436 (38%) sources with $L_{\rm X} > 10^{42}\ \rm erg\ s^{-1}$ are confirmed to be highly obscured, including 102 Compton-thick (CT) candidates. We propose a new hardness-ratio measure of the obscuration level which can be used to select highly obscured AGN candidates. The completeness and accuracy of applying this method to our AGNs are 88% and 80%, respectively. The observed logN-logS relation favors cosmic X-ray background models that predict moderate (i.e., between optimistic and pessimistic) CT number counts. 19% (6/31) of our highly obscured AGNs that have optical classifications are labeled as broad-line AGNs, suggesting that, at least for part of the AGN population, the heavy X-ray obscuration is largely a line-of-sight effect, i.e., some high-column-density clouds on various scales (but not necessarily a dust-enshrouded torus) along our sightline may obscure the compact X-ray emitter. After correcting for several observational biases, we obtain the intrinsic NH distribution and its evolution. The CT-to-highly-obscured fraction is roughly 52% and is consistent with no evident redshift evolution. We also perform long-term (~17 years in the observed frame) variability analyses for 31 sources with the largest number of counts available. Among them, 17 sources show flux variabilities: 31% (5/17) are caused by the change of NH, 53% (9/17) are caused by the intrinsic luminosity variability, 6% (1/17) are driven by both effects, and 2 are not classified due to large spectral fitting errors., Comment: 32 pages, 21 figures, 9 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The ubiquitous variability of quasars across a wide range of wavelengths and timescales encodes critical information about the structure and dynamics of the circumnuclear emitting regions that are too small to be directly resolved, as well as detailed underlying physics of accretion and feedback processes in these active supermassive black holes. We emphasize the importance of studying quasar variability with time-domain spectroscopy, focusing on two science cases: (1) reverberation mapping (RM) to measure the broad-line region sizes and black hole masses in distant quasars; (2) spectroscopic follow-up of extreme variability quasars that dramatically change their continuum and broad-line flux within several years. We highlight the need for dedicated optical-infrared spectroscopic survey facilities in the coming decades to accompany wide-area time-domain imaging surveys, including: (1) the next phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V; ~2020-2025), an all-sky, time-domain multi-object spectroscopic survey with 2.5m-class telescopes; (2) the planned Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer, a dedicated 10m-class spectroscopic survey telescope with a 1.5 sq. deg field-of-view and multiplex of thousands of fibers in both optical and near-IR (J+H) to begin operations in 2029; (3) the Time-domain Spectroscopic Observatory (TSO), a proposed Probe-class ~1.3m telescope at L2, with imaging and spectroscopy (R=200, 1800) in 4 bands (0.3 - 5 micron) and rapid slew capability to 90% of sky, which will extend the coverage of Hbeta to z=8., Comment: Science White Paper for the US Astro 2020 Decadal Survey

In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced 'spectral-timing-polarimetry' techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process., Comment: Accepted for publication on Sci. Utilizing all the 16-year $RXTE$ observations, we analyze the X-ray spectra of 32 TeV blazars, and perform a systematic investigation of X-ray spectral variability for the 5 brightest sources during their major flares that lasted several days. We obtain photon spectral index ($\alpha$), flux and synchrotron radiation peak energy ($E_{\rm{p}}$) from empirical spectral fitting, and electron spectral index ($p$) from theoretical synchrotron radiation modeling. We find that both $\alpha$ and $p$ generally display a harder-when-brighter trend, confirming the results of many previous works. Furthermore, we confirm and strengthen the result that $p$ must vary in order to explain the observed X-ray spectral variability during flares, which would have useful implications for interpreting the associated higher-energy spectral variability. We see apparent electron spectral hysteresis in many but not all $p$-flux plots that takes a form of "loop" or oblique"8". We obtain a tight $p$-hardness ratio (HR) relation and a tighter $p$-$\alpha$ relation using spectra of flaring periods, both of which are also applicable to stacked data of quiescent periods. We demonstrate that these two empirical relations can be used efficiently to estimate $p$ from HR or $\alpha$ that is readily achieved. Finally, we find that, when considering TeV blazars as a whole, $\alpha$ and X-ray luminosity are positively correlated, $E_{\rm{p}}$ is negatively correlated with $p$ and $\alpha$, and $E_{\rm{p}}$ is positively correlated with HR; all these correlations are in line with the blazar sequence. However, after correcting for the Doppler boosting effect, $\alpha$ and intrinsic X-ray luminosity follow an anti-correlation., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables. We explore the evolution of the time variability (in the optical $g$-band and on timescales of weeks to years) of SDSS Stripe 82 quasars along the quasar main sequence. A parent sample of $1004$ quasars within $0.5\leq z \leq 0.89$ are used for our statistical studies, we then make subsamples from our parent sample: a subsample of $246$ quasars with similar luminosities, and a subsample of $399$ quasars with similar Rfe (i.e., the ratio of the equivalent width of FeII within $4435$--$4685\ \mathrm{\AA}$ to that of \Hbeta). We find the variability amplitude decreases with luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{bol}}$). The anti-correlation between the variability amplitude and Rfe is weak but statistically significant. The characteristic timescale, $\tau$, correlates mostly with quasar luminosity, its dependence on Rfe is statistically insignificant. After controlling luminosity and Rfe, the high- and low-FWHM samples have similar structure functions. These results support the framework that Rfe is governed by Eddington ratio and FWHM of Hbeta is mostly determined by orientation. We then provide new empirical relations between variability parameters and quasar properties (i.e., luminosity and Rfe). Our new relations are consistent with the scenario that quasar variability is driven by the thermal fluctuations in the accretion disk, $\tau$ seems to correspond to the thermal timescale. From our new relations, we find the short-term variability is mostly sensitive to $L_{\mathrm{bol}}$. Recent multi-band variability studies have revealed that active galactic nucleus (AGN) accretion disc sizes are generally larger than the predictions of the classical thin disc by a factor of $2\sim 3$. This hints at some missing key ingredient in the classical thin disc theory: here, we propose an accretion disc wind. For a given bolometric luminosity, in the outer part of an accretion disc, the effective temperature in the wind case is higher than that in the no-wind one; meanwhile, the radial temperature profile of the wind case is shallower than the no-wind one. In presence of winds, for a given band, blackbody emission from large radii can contribute more to the observed luminosity than the no-wind case. Therefore, the disc sizes of the wind case can be larger than those of the no-wind case. We demonstrate that a model with the accretion rate scaling as $\dot{M}_0 (R/R_{\mathrm{S}})^{\beta}$ (i.e., the accretion rate declines with decreasing radius due to winds) can match both the inter-band time lags and the spectral energy distribution of NGC 5548. Our model can also explain the inter-band time lags of other sources.
