In renewable energy micro-source applications, a wide range of voltage conversion of the step-up converter is an essential part to equalize the typical low voltage of micro-source with DC-bus voltage of Inverter or motor drives. In order to meet this purpose, an ultra-voltage gain step-up DC-DC converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter has made an arrangement of the regenerative-boost fed switched inductor and capacitor configurations. Thereby, due to such an organization of structure, the proposed converter can develop an extremely high voltage-gain even at lower duty ratios. In addition, it has the advantage of lower switching stress across all power semi-conductive diodes. Furthermore, this paper describes the steady-state analysis and comparative features of the converter with existing recent literature. Finally, to validate theoretical analysis and test the feasibility and suitability of the proposed ultra-gain converter, the experimental results were observed by a 500 W fabricated prototype. Conventional half bridge modular multilevel converter (MMC) system will suffer great over-current when there is a dc side fault. Therefore, topology study in sub-modules with dc side fault blocking capability have become one of the hotspots in MMC field. However, fault blocking topologies using conventional IGBT devices must employ more semiconductors than half bridge topology. The extra semiconductor devices employed in the topology will lead to the increase of cost and conduction loss. To reduce the conduction loss of the fault blocking topology, a novel sub-module topology is proposed in this paper. The proposed topology employs reverse blocking devices to form the low conduction loss path. Conduction loss analysis is conducted in this paper to show the priority of the proposed topology. When a fault occurs on the dc side of the voltage source converter based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) transmission system, the fault current rises quickly due to the low damping of the dc system. Using a dc fault current limiter (DC-FCL) to limit the rise of the fault current can significantly reduce the breaking requirements of the DCCB. A topology of a bidirectional active dc fault current limiter (BA-FCL) based on coupled inductor is proposed in this paper. No expensive full-controlled power electronic devices are used in this topology. Only a few half-controlled power electronic devices are used to achieve active control of the current limiting unit. Compared with many topologies of current limiter at present, the fault current limiting effect of BA-FCL is improved significantly while the cost, volume, topology complexity, and control complexity are reduced. The stress analysis and parameter design of the proposed current limiter are carried out. As high-speed railways develop rapidly worldwide, the problems of neutral section and power quality are becoming increasingly prominent. These problems affect the normal operation of the power grid and the electric locomotives. The co-phase power supply schemes were proposed by researchers, which can solve these problems well. Among them, the MMC-based scheme (MMC-5 L) is a representative one. The existing scheme, when applied to the auto-transformer (AT)-fed system which is usually adopted by high-speed railways, needs to install an auto-transformer on the output side. To eliminate the auto-transformer and to obtain the more suitable and superior co-phase power supply schemes to AT-fed system, two improved schemes are proposed in this paper based on the novel MMC-based scheme (MMC-6 L) we proposed before. While establishing the mathematical model, creating the control system, and carrying out simulation verification of the proposed schemes, the proposed schemes are compared with MMC-6 L and MMC-5 L in terms of topological characteristics, control system complexity, power loss, and functionality. The results show that while the proposed schemes can fulfill the functions of the co-phase power supply scheme well like the MMC-5 L and MMC-6 L, they are more suitable and superior for the AT-fed system in terms of control system complexity and power loss. The paper develops two computationally efficient models, namely a detailed equivalent model and an average-value model, with provisions for representation of the critical state of converter blocking, for modular multilevel converters with embedded storage. These models are indispensable in the simulation of dc faults. The developed detailed equivalent model provides accuracy that matches electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations, with much reduced computational burden; the developed average-value model represents the averaged behavior of the converter by neglecting switching transients. Both models are extensively evaluated in the context of an HVDC system against benchmark results form a detailed switching model developed in PSCAD/EMTDC. The results confirm the validity and accuracy of the models for steady state, transient, and faulted operating conditions including when the converter is blocked in response to a dc fault. Miniaturization and low cost contribute to the development and popularization of wireless power transfer (WPT). Reducing the number of power conversion stages can reduce the volume and cost of the WPT converter, and even make it possible to improve the efficiency. A single-stage WPT converter with constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) output and its asymmetric modulation method are proposed in this paper. A direct AC-AC converter is applied to the primary side of the WPT converter to directly convert line-frequency AC to high-frequency AC. The applied direct AC-AC converter that can replace the commonly used multi-stage primary converter reduces the number of circuit devices, thereby reducing the volume and cost of primary converter. The proposed WPT converter can realize zero voltage switching (ZVS) and power factor correction (PFC). In order to achieve CC and CV output, a switchable hybrid compensation topology is applied to the proposed WPT converter. The missing capability of DC fault current limitation is an inherent disadvantage in the typical half-bridge modular multilevel converter (MMC), which restricts its application in long-distance high voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. The full-bridge submodule (FBSM) and clamped double submodule (CDSM) topologies allow for fault current self-clearing, but also suffer from additional hardware cost and power losses. In this paper, an improved submodule topology utilizing the new reverse-blocking insulated gate bipolar transistor (RB-IGBT) is proposed to improve system economy without compromising its performance. The operating principles and DC fault characteristics of the proposed topology are analyzed in details, including comparison with various topologies in terms of cost, losses, fault current clearing speed and thermal. Compared with the traditional CDSM topology, the proposed RBSM can clear DC faults faster with reduced cost of switching devices. A DC fault protection strategy for MMC-HVDC system is also presented. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have been recognized as the most attractive technology for high voltage direct current (HVDC) applications during the last years. Their advantages include the ability to freely control the internally stored energy in the distributed submodules (SMs) and to independently control AC and DC powers. Recent studies showed that an MMC can take advantage of this degree of freedom to supply ancillary services with low energy requirements such as frequency response or power oscillation damping by connecting energy storage systems (ESSs) to its SM capacitors. This paper proposes a modular DC-DC converter as an interface between the energy storage element and the SM capacitor. As it can be built with switches allowing a high switching frequency, it is shown that the volume of the passive components can be reduced in comparison with interface converters known in the literature. The proposed control strategy avoids to transfer the harmonics of a SM to the ESS that prevents to drastically oversize the system. The proposed control method also provides an appropriate energy exchange without affecting the control philosophy of an MMC and it addresses balancing issues. Simulations and a downscaled prototype confirm the relevance of the proposed control. As the proposed interface converter is able to track the power reference with fast dynamics, it provides the same system-level advantages as other interface converters known in the literature but with a reduced volume. A novel single-stage doubly grounded transformerless inverter configuration which can buck-boost the output voltage is proposed in this paper. In this transformerless inverter configuration grid neutral is directly connected to PV panel negative rail which suppresses/eliminates the PV leakage currents. In addition, the tracking of maximum power point is possible for wide variation of weather conditions due to buck-boost voltage capability of inverter. Moreover, the proposed inverter topology has symmetrical operation in both half cycles hence injects negligible DC offset current in to the grid. Here the symmetrical operation of inverter is achieved due to one inductor is used for both half cycles of the grid. The proposed topology is realized using five switches, two of which work at 50 Hz and remaining three switches at high frequency which reduces overall semiconductor losses. Further, the proposed inverter topology is controlled through a newly developed modulation technique and possible working modes are analyzed and described thoroughly. The use of power converters as solid state transformers is an attractive solution to modernize the power network, but this solution has not been fully addressed for MV and HV substations. This paper presents a customized and simple control for the Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter (M3C), specially conceived for its operation on synchronous ports, which is the case of AC substations. The control allows bidirectional power transfer, generation/absorption of reactive power and provisions of ancillary services. The converter is compared to the back-to-back Modular Multilevel Converter (B2B-MMC) where the key performance indicators to carry out the comparison are power efficiency, number of semiconductor devices, passive components required, footprint, voltage cell balance, fault blocking capability and stress of components. The simulation results show the features, performance and attractiveness of the M3C topology in a 33/11 kV, 16 MW substation under different operating conditions, including grid faults and dynamic operation. The M3C presents similar efficiency and performance than the B2B-MMC, but it uses fewer semiconductor devices, passive components and total cell capacitor energy than the B2B-MMC, reducing cost and footprint. The modular multilevel converter (MMC), owing to the presence of a large number of submodules (SMs) and energy storing elements, requires a large footprint and initial investment. To address these issues, this paper proposes the switched modular multilevel converter (SMMC). It consists of two major elements; the chain-links (CLs), consisting of cascade connection of SMs as in MMC, and the single-pole-triple-throw (SPTT) switches, which can be realized using either the T-type or NPC-type switch strings. The SMMC works on the principle of connecting all the phase-legs in series and their respective positions are mutually interchanged. It offers a compact structure as the SMs count is reduced to 33% of MMC, which results in a much lower energy storage requirement. Furthermore, it does not have inter-phase circulating current problem and hence the CL inductors can also be avoided. The SMMC structure, operating principles, control, and modulation schemes are explained in detail. A detailed comparison of SMMC with the other major existing converters is carried out to highlight the important features of SMMC. The efficacy of SMMC is validated using PSCAD simulation studies with a 19-level grid-connected SMMC model. Differential power processing (DPP) converters have been developed for photovoltaic (PV) panels to preclude energy yield reduction due to partial shading. In large-scale PV systems comprising numerous series-connected panels, DPP converters with good modularity are preferable because the number of series-connected panels varies depending on applications. This paper proposes a switched capacitor converter (SCC)-based modular DPP architecture for large-scale PV systems. Four panels are grouped as a module, each having a panel-level DPP converter, and modules are connected in series to form a string. The design of the panel-level DPP converter is fixed while the system can be arbitrarily extended by stacking modules, achieving good modularity. Adjacent panel-level DPP converters are dc-coupled, by which modules can be connected using long cables, mitigating installation limitations. This paper proposes a novel dual input nine-level inverter (DINLI) topology which requires only seven controllable devices. The dual inputs are un-identical DC voltage sources in the ratio 1:3. A simple control scheme is derived by appropriately modifying the phase disposition pulse width modulation technique to generate high-quality 9-level output from the DINLI topology. At any given instant, a maximum of four switches conduct out of which only a maximum of two switches operate at high frequency, bringing down the switching and conduction losses significantly and improving the overall system efficiency. The bidirectional DINLI (BDINLI) topology with reactive power capability can be realized by replacing the unidirectional devices with the controlled switches (i.e., total nine switches). In addition, the proposed DINLI topology does not require extra voltage balancing circuits which further improves the efficiency. The DINLI operation is verified through MATLAB simulations for grid-connected applications and its extension to an n-level, 3-phase application is also investigated. The single-phase-to-ground (SPG) fault at the valve side of the converter transformer is one of the most critical faults threatening the operation of bipolar half-bridge modular-multilevel-converter-based multi-terminal direct-current (HB-MMC MTDC) systems. Following a valve-side SPG fault, the upper-arm submodule (SM) capacitors in the faulty converter may suffer a serious overvoltage, and the grid-side fault currents may experience no zero-crossings. The existing protection methods generally rely on tripping the grid-side alternate-current circuit-breaker (ACCB), which cannot fully isolate the fault. The healthy poles and stations may encounter severe disturbance and be all blocked, which will lead to a power outage of the entire MTDC system. This paper proposes an ACCB-independent scheme based on thyristor-pairs and damping SMs to address these problems. Antiparallel thyristor-pairs are connected in series within the upper and lower arms in each phase. Serial damping SMs are connected within the lower arms to help the lower-arm thyristor pairs cut off the fault currents. Although the proposed additional devices inevitably cause conduction losses, they can effectively protect the faulty converter and healthy circuit in the MTDC system. The HVDC systems have been employing modular multilevel converters (MMC) due to their unique high voltage high power potential. However, the lack of fault ride-through capability imposes restrictions on MMCs that are based on half-bridge (HB) modules. Since it is necessary to limit the fault currents to protect MMCs from serious short circuit faults against pole-to-pole DC fault, several protection schemes have been introduced to deal with the DC short circuit faults. This paper proposes a new hybrid MMC protective topology consisting of a combination of the HB and three-quarter-bridge (TQB) modules. The TQB behaves like an HB under normal operation and has low power losses compared to other protective topologies. Modulation and control of this configuration are like HB-based MMC. In the proposed hybrid protective topology, during a pole to pole DC fault, the fault current can be either blocked or be limited by TQB-SMs. Both simulations and experiments were performed to verify the operation of the suggested hybrid MMC in different modes of operation. This paper presents a new power electronic topology for a STATCOM allowing the generation of multilevel AC voltages. This topology is characterized by a modular configuration since it uses two well known four-leg two-level voltage source inverters. A Scott transformer with multiple secondary windings connects the two four-leg inverters to the grid. One of the important features of the proposed power topology is the capability to generate AC voltages with high number of levels, in spite of using only two four-leg two-level voltage source inverters. To maximize the number of voltage levels a geometric progression ratio of 3 between the windings of the transformers connected in cascade is proposed. However, to reduce the turns-ratio span, alternatively a fractional geometric ratio of 1.5 is also proposed and analyzed. A control strategy adapted to the proposed power converter topology is also presented. Besides the control of the reactive power the regulation of the four-leg inverter DC voltage will also be considered. To support the theoretical studies and assumptions, simulations and experiments are presented. Experimental results were obtained using a low power laboratory prototype. A multi-level boost topology based on a flying capacitor is compared in this work with the hybrid, multi-level, partial power processing topology already presented in the literature for use as a highly efficient and compact dc/dc stage in 1500-V, two-stage, grid-connected PV systems. Different variations of the resonant stage of the hybrid topology are analyzed and compared in terms of losses, volume and complexity. Full multivariable optimization is conducted for the multi-level boost topology with different number of levels and for all the analyzed variations of the resonant stage of the hybrid topology. Appropriately rated new classes of 650-V and 900-V WBG devices are included in the optimization algorithm. It is concluded that due to the dominant conduction losses and gap in the voltage rating of the commercially available WBG devices between 650V and 200V, increase of the number of levels over 4 leads to the deteriorated loss and volume performances. All the analysis related to the resonant stage of the hybrid topology is confirmed by detailed and comprehensive measurements of two prototypes of 4kW of nominal and 7kW of maximal power. Additionally, all the loss models applied in the optimization algorithms presented in this paper are confirmed by detailed measurements, thermal calibration and finite element thermal simulations of the wide bandgap devices and inductor designs employed in this work. The hybrid dc circuit breaker (HDCCB) is one of the most promising solutions for the dc interruption. But the power electronics-based load commutation switch (LCS) in the main current path causes the high on-state loss and cost, which inhibits the application of the HDCCB. In this paper, a novel hybrid dc circuit breaker is proposed, in which the vacuum interrupter with the external transverse magnetic field (ETMF) is designed to improve the arc voltage and thus enhance the current commutation to power electronics. The ETMF-based vacuum interrupter achieves the fast current commutation instead of the LCS, which realizes the low on-state loss and cost while preserving the short commutation and interruption time. The arc voltage characteristic with ETMF is analyzed, and the influence of the different factors on the commutation time and di/dt before current zero are investigated in detail. Based on the calculation results, a 10 kV dc breaker prototype based on the proposed topology is developed with the breaking current of 15.5 kA. This paper presents a reduced-stage three-phase isolated AC/DC converter topology used for auxiliary power units (APUs) in avionics and electric vehicle (EV) applications. Traditional two-stage cascaded AC/DC converters are widely used for these applications due to their ease of implementation and simple control schemes. With the objective of improving the power density of the APUs, the proposed converter achieves reduction in the number of active power devices along with a smaller DC link capacitance by implementing an unconventional structure with a bandpass filter, to allow only the required frequency components to transfer the rated power. To accurately characterize the proposed converter, a detailed formulation of the filter design for the circuit along with mathematical derivation of the control scheme is presented. In terms of achieving enhancement in the overall efficiency, a comparative study is presented that focusses on the conduction and switching losses incurred in the proposed topology as compared to the state of the art (SOA) two-stage AC/DC conversion topologies. The analyses portray efficiency improvement of 0.8% for a 6 kW rated load, with significant reduction in active device losses. Additionally, to support the formulations and derivations, simulation studies and experimental verifications are also presented. The results show an input power factor of 0.9918 (lagging) with a conversion efficiency of 97.6%, a tightly regulated output voltage with less than 1% peak-peak ripple and the input current total harmonic distortion (THD) of as low as 1.57%. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been widely used in the multi-terminal overhead line high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system due to its outstanding performance. However, the AC side and the DC side of MMC-HVDC have a strong interaction and will be affected by each other's faults, which brings the risk of system instability. In this paper, a modified MMC named active MMC with embedded energy storage in submodules (SMs) is proposed to isolate the impact of faults as a firewall. Firstly, the topologies of the active MMC and SMs with energy storage are introduced. Then the operation principle of the active MMC under different faults is analyzed in a multi-terminal MMC-HVDC system. Thirdly, the complete control scheme of the active MMC is proposed for bidirectional fault isolation. Finally, two main application scenarios of the active MMC are simulated in a three-terminal MMC-HVDC system and a particularly designed AC/DC hybrid transmission system respectively in PSCAD/EMTDC. The simulation waveforms of the active MMC are compared with the conventional MMC. This paper presents a new single-source three-phase seven-level inverter with an inherent three-time voltage boosting capability for medium-voltage applications. The proposed topology is comprised of series connection of two switched-capacitor (SC) networks with an added half-bridge module per phase. Each of such integrated SC networks requires a single capacitor associated with three active power switches. The three-time voltage boosting feature of the proposed topology can reduce the dc-link voltage requirements by 50% in comparison to the traditional neutral point clamped (NPC), flying capacitors, active NPC (ANPC), hybrid clamped ANPC, and cascaded H-bridge topologies, and 75% to advanced ANPC topologies. It can also reduce the number of required switches and capacitors as well as their voltage stresses compared to those state-of-the-art topologies reported in the literature. By integrating “n” number of added SC networks in the proposed seven-level basic topology, the number of output voltage levels can be extended to 2n+3 per phase. A finite control set model predictive control algorithm is also derived to control the converter in both the active and reactive power exchanges modes without distorting the generated grid current quality. The capacitor voltage balancing is inherent in the proposed topology, and thus, there is no need for any additional voltage balancing circuit, which further reduces the control complexity. Hybrid circuit breaker (HCB) has shown good performance for interrupting dc fault current. However, a massive number of IGBTs in series is needed. These will lead to high costs and significant difficulty in balancing IGBT dynamic voltage. This paper proposes a bidirectional hybrid circuit breaker based on a cascaded half-bridge submodule structure to reduce the overall costs and implementation difficulty of HCB. The number of IGBTs is reduced by 50%, and the operating speed is fast enough. A model of a four-terminal modular multilevel converter (MMC) system with a proposed hybrid circuit breaker in different stages is developed to describe the fault blocking process more clearly. This paper proposes a delta-connected Modular Multilevel STATCOM with partially rated storage (PRS-STATCOM), capable of providing both reactive, and active power support. The purpose is to provide short-term energy storage enabled grid support services such as inertial, and frequency response, either alongside or temporarily instead of standard STATCOM voltage support. The topology proposed here contains two types of sub-modules (SM) in each phase-leg: standard sub-modules (STD-SMs), and energy storage element sub-modules (ESE-SMs) with a dc-dc interface converter between the SM capacitor, and the ESE. A control structure has been developed that allows energy transfer between the SM capacitor, and the ESE resulting in active power exchange between the converter, and the grid. Injecting $\text{3}^{rd}$ harmonic current into the converter waveforms can be used to increase the amount of power that can be extracted from the ESE-SMs, and so reduce the required ESE-SMs fraction in each phase-leg. Simulation results demonstrate that for three selected active power ratings, 1 pu, $\frac{2}{3}$ pu, and $\frac{1}{3}$ pu, the fraction of SMs that need be converted to ESE-SMs are only 69%, 59% & 38%. This article presents a low-power column-parallel $\Sigma \Delta $ analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with shared operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs) for CMOS image sensors (CISs). Through the proposed time division multiplexing of OTAs, the power consumption of the modulator achieves a reduction of about 40%. The proposed structure alleviates the layout requirement of OTAs, enabling implementation of a high-resolution low-power image sensor in advanced CMOS technology nodes. As the coupled noise introduced by the proposed column-shared scheme is suppressed to a lower level than the inherent crosstalk of adjacent pixels, the proposed structure only contributes a negligible inter-column coupled noise from the ADCs. Moreover, a compact digital decimation filter with a single-bit-bit-wise-inversion (BWI) topology is also proposed, which can reduce chip area significantly. The prototype sensor is fabricated in a 40-nm standard CMOS technology with 256 $\times256$ pixel array and 256 proposed column-parallel $\Sigma \Delta $ ADCs. Each $\Sigma \Delta $ ADC occupies a core area of 4.5 $\mu \text{m}\,\,\times $ 310 $\mu \text{m}$ , while consuming a power of 58.8 $\mu \text{W}$. The measured differential nonlinearity (DNL) and integral nonlinearity (INL) are +0.49/−0.65 LSB and +5.1/−4.8 LSB, respectively. This tutorial brief reviews highly-integrated switched-capacitor (SC) DC-DC converter topologies for miniaturized energy harvesting (EH) IoT systems. Aiming to provide a concise overview of SC converter-based EH interfaces, we first discuss the system level design considerations for energy balancing between source, storage, and load under different environmental conditions. The key factors dominating the energy extraction and power conversion efficiencies, including the source adaptation strategies and SC power stage intrinsic losses, are outlined to establish a fundamental understanding on the EH system performance. After studying different state-of-the-art SC topologies in terms of their rational boost voltage conversion ratio (VCR) generation flexibility, loss characteristics, and implementation tradeoffs, we further introduce two advanced SC converter-based EH system examples, highlighting the SC converter operation in enhancing the EH system functionality and performance. This article presents a new hybrid three-phase cascaded modular multilevel inverter developed with a reduced switch count concept for harvesting renewable energy. The basic module of the proposed inverter consists of six switches, three asymmetric dc links, and two blocking diodes. The inverter can generate six positive voltage states, which are negatively polarized by the end-side H-bridge unit. As a result, a higher number of voltage levels are obtained with a minimum number of switches that ensure reduced total harmonic distortion in the grid current. Additionally, the proposed inverter can operate at a comparatively lower switching frequency, which decreases the switching losses. Most of the switches in each individual module conduct for a small period resulting in low conduction losses. The reduced switch count with the low switching and conduction losses increases the compactness and the efficiency of the proposed inverter. Multiple high-frequency magnetic links are utilized for the dc sources required for the proposed inverter to achieve inherent dc-link voltage balancing ability and galvanic isolation. Wireless power transfer system has played an important role in rail transit, industrial production, and daily life. This article proposes a wireless power transfer permanent-magnet synchronous motor (WPT-PMSM) drive system based on the matrix converter (MC). The direct conversion of low-frequency ac and high-frequency ac is realized without dc link by using MC. The dual LCC compensation network is designed for better performance. In addition, a new control method has been proposed for the proposed WPT-PMSM drive to operate stably. In particular, the bidirectional power flow is achieved with the proposed WTP-PMSM drive and related control scheme. Through the mathematical modeling, the coordinated control of power converters on both sides of the coupling coil is achieved and the reactive power of the LCC compensation network is eliminated. This article proposes a unidirectional high step-up dc–dc converter. The study approaches principle of operation, analysis, guide design, and experimental validation. The high-voltage gain is reached using coupled inductors and voltage multiplier cells (VMC). An interleaved structure of two phases is employed to provide a low-current ripple in the input side. The current balance between the phases occurs due to the insertion of a built-in transformer, which also contributes to increasing the voltage gain. The energy from the leakage inductances is reused, reducing voltage spikes across the semiconductors. Additionally, the proposed converter provides an input–output common ground, which is a requirement for many applications. To verify the proposed converter, a 1-kW prototype, 48–800 V, and 16.67 of voltage gain, was designed and tested. Multilevel inverters (MLIs) featuring reactive power ability and common ground (CG) have become much popular in transformerless grid-tied photovoltaic applications. A switched-capacitor (SC) based five-level transformerless inverter configuration is thus proposed in this article, which requires only six switches, one diode, three capacitors, and one input dc voltage supply. Notably, only four power switches are operated in high frequency, thus, the switching losses are reduced. Moreover, the presented topology can effectively tackle the leakage current problem using a CG architecture. A multicarrier phase disposition pulsewidth modulation strategy is employed to achieve reactive power regulation and SC voltage self-balancing. To achieve the neutral point voltage balance of the presented five-level inverter, a simple closed-loop voltage-balancing control method is proposed. The operation principles with modulation strategy and voltage self-balancing of SC are discussed in depth. Comparisons between the proposed and the state-of-the-art MLIs are presented in detail. Hybrid DC circuit breakers (HDCCBs) have excellent performance in terms of breaking speed and low losses and have become the mainstream technology for dc fault isolation in dc grids. However, because of the breaking limitation of the solid-state branch in HdcCBs, the existing HdcCBs are still weak in breaking high current. Although the breaking ability can be improved by series and parallel devices, the cost will increase rapidly, and it is very difficult to share current by paralleling a single type of device. This article proposes a novel HdcCB topology that combines two types of power electronic devices in solid-state branches to meet the requirement of a large breaking capacity in dc grids. The structure and breaking principles of this novel topology, which aims to break high current, are introduced. The design methods of the key parameters are presented. Then, the current breaking ability of the novel topology is verified by developing a prototype completing a 10 kV/60 kA breaking test in 3 ms. Finally, this novel topology is compared with other dc circuit breakers at the same breaking level, which shows that this novel topology has obvious advantages in cost and volume with fewer devices. Induction heating appliance operation is constrained by the nonlinear pot material behavior under the generated magnetic field. The equivalent load seen by the inverter varies with the intensity of the field, meaning that this variation is dependent on the mains voltage. In flexible-surface induction cooktops, this fact is combined with a high coil number and different pots to be powered simultaneously, increasing the complexity to control the transmitted power while maintaining proper mains current consumption. In this article, two noncomplementary asymmetrical modulations with in-cycle parameter variation are proposed for improved power factor correction while avoiding the need for switching frequency variation and intermodulation noise in multiload systems. Unbalanced ac voltages drastically deteriorate the performance of five-level flying capacitor (FC) rectifiers. Without introducing an extra buffering circuit to absorb the second-order oscillating power, it is an incompatible contradiction for realizing both negative-sequence current reduction and second-order voltage ripple suppression. In this article, based on the idea of using FCs in the rectifier to absorb the oscillating power, a second-order voltage ripple suppression strategy for unbalanced ac voltage conditions is proposed. Reducing the negative-sequence currents and suppressing the dc voltage ripples can be simultaneously realized. In a single-phase charging system of electric vehicles, the current control performance of the single-phase ac–dc factor correction (PFC) converter with a deadbeat predictive current control (DPCC) method is affected by the distorted grid voltage, parameter dependence, and control delay. To tackle these problems, a modified DPCC method is proposed in this article. By introducing a phase adjustment parameter θc, which can be directly calculated according to the required power factor, into the grid voltage feedforward of the current loop, an improved input current control performance with lower harmonic components and higher power factor can be achieved when the converter operates at unity power factor. At the same time, compared with the traditional method, a reactive power compensation function is added in the modified DPCC and a deadtime compensation method is adopted in the modulation. A new state-observer-based current balancing method for Modular Multilevel Converters with Interleaved half-bridge Sub-Modules (ISM-MMC) is presented in this article. The developed observer allows estimating currents through interleaved half-bridge legs in each submodule of ISM-MMC based only on arm current and submodule's capacitor voltage measurements. Then, the interleaved current balancing control uses the estimated currents to reduce the interleaved currents imbalance caused by upstream control actions. This technique minimizes the number of required current sensors in ISM-MMC, thereby reducing the converter's cost, weight, and volume. Capabilities of the proposed sensorless interleaved currents balancing control have been tested against standard parameter tolerances of the composing passive elements. In addition to that, a novel capacitor voltage balancing strategy for MMCs is developed. The new algorithm contains the main advantages of the classical sorting-based capacitor voltage balancing methods while providing an opportunity to decouple two balancing tasks of ISM-MMC, namely capacitor voltage and interleaved legs current balancing. The feasibility of the proposed methods is verified by extensive simulation and experimental tests on a laboratory prototype by the corresponding system response under the output characteristics variation and interleaved current control perturbation. Cascaded split-source inverter (CSSI) is a single-stage modular multilevel structure. This article proposes the multidimensional pulsewidth modulation (MD-PWM) for this topology. All multilevel modulations are a particular version of this approach. The principles of this geometrical method are based on selecting the optimal points and determining the switching sequences and time intervals. By considering the operational principles of CSSI, this method is modified to accurately control the voltage of dc links, charge inductors with constant duty cycles, control dc and ac sides of cells independently, and reduce the reverse recovery effects of input diodes. MD-PWM, with a low computational burden, can be implemented for CSSI with any number of voltage levels. The output power can be distributed equally or unequally among cells, and both buck and boost operation modes are realized for each cell. Also, this method is extended for the operation of the converter with unequal input sources. For an asymmetric topology with N cells, harmonics are located at multiples of N times switching frequency. Thus, this strategy eliminates low-frequency distortions from the output voltage of asymmetric CSSI. A new Modular Multilevel Converter with Interleaved half-bridge Sub-Modules (ISM-MMC) is proposed in this article. The ISM-MMC exhibits higher modularity and scalability in terms of current ratings with respect to a conventional MMC while preserving the typical voltage-level adaptiveness. The ISM-MMC brings the known advantages of classical MMC to low-voltage, high-current applications making it a novel candidate for the sector of ultrafast chargers for all types of electric vehicles (EVs). This advanced topology makes it possible to easily reach the charging power of the EV charging system up to 4.5 MW and beyond with a low-voltage supply. To operate the new converter, a hybrid modulation scheme that helps to exploit the advantages of the interleaving scheme is implemented and explained in this article. It has been verified that the typical MMC control methods are still applicable for ISM-MMC. A comparative study between classical MMC and ISM-MMC configurations in terms of output characteristics and efficiency is also given. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the number of ac voltage levels is synthetically multiplied by the number of interleaved half-bridge legs in submodules. The actively commutated current source converter (CSC) does not need large energy storage capacitors and can realize the black start of wind farms, which provides a practicable scheme for the lightweight offshore wind power DC transmission system. However, resulted from utilizing pulse width modulation, the existing CSC has the disadvantages of high DC harmonics and high switching loss. To solve this problem, an offshore wind power transmission system based on the current source converter with fundamental frequency modulation employed (FFM-CSC) is investigated. Firstly, the topology and mathematical model are analyzed. Then, a steady-state control strategy coordinated by the offshore CSC and the onshore CSC is put forward, and the power operating range is researched. A black start control strategy for wind farms is also proposed. Finally, the offshore wind power transmission system is tested by simulation in PSCAD/EMTDC. The results demonstrate that the FFM-CSC-based offshore wind power transmission system can smoothly realize the black start, stably control the frequency and amplitude of AC voltage, adapt to output changes of wind turbines, and realize the fault ride-through. This article explores a single-source UXE-type asymmetrical multilevel inverter for its operation on 13-, 11-, and 9-levels with boosted output voltage. The 13- and 11-level operations require a single voltage sensor to maintain the auxiliary dc link at $V_{\text{dc}}/2$ and produce 1.5 and 1.25 boosting using redundant states and exhibit lower capacitor inrush currents. For the 9-level operation, the topology exhibits self-balancing of the dc-link at $V_{\text{dc}}$ and a boosting of 2. With a conventional pulsewidth modulation (PWM) for the 13-level operation, the inverter can drive a predominantly inductive load of 0.35 lagging at unity modulation index. For the 11-level operation, the levels cease to maintain beyond the modulation of 0.95. Thus, a hybrid PWM is proposed to fully utilize the redundant states for the charging of the switched-capacitors and enhance the inverter active load capability in the 13-level mode by 21% at unity modulation index ($m_a$) and address a 0.8 power factor load at the $m_a$ of 0.9. For the 11-level operation, the levels are maintained at any $m_a$ with the hybrid PWM. The operation of the inverter is also verified for nonlinear load. In this article, a nine-level multilevel topology is proposed by stacking of low voltage basic inverter cells and then cascading with H-bridges. The dc-link is split into four equal halves by series-connected capacitors from a common dc-link. Three common coupling points (CCPs) are formed due to the stacking of four capacitors, which are connected across the dc-link. The CCP voltage balancing is ensured by drawing or injecting zero instantaneous currents from each of these points at any instant. A six-phase symmetrical IM is used to generate equal and opposite instantaneous phase currents by applying exactly equal and opposite phase voltages for two opposite phases from the six-phase inverter. Simultaneously, the capacitor voltage balancing of H-bridge inverter cells is also achieved by proper selection of redundancies from the available pole voltage redundancies. The concept is verified with a nine-level inverter laboratory prototype, which consists of a five-level stacked inverter, and followed by two low voltage cascaded H-bridge inverters in each phase. In this work, a ten-level inverter scheme is presented to extend the linear modulation range (LMR) by using a unique space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) technique, such that no lower order harmonics (such as 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th, etc.) are present in the phase voltage as compared to six-step mode operation. The proposed scheme can increase the peak phase fundamental voltage of the inverter from 0.577 to $0.637 V_{dc}$ (maximum possible peak phase fundamental voltage of a conventional hexagonal space vector structure (SVS) voltage source inverters while operating in six-step mode), irrespective of the load power factor (p.f), where $V_{dc}$ is the dc link voltage of the inverter. The ten-level inverter structure is formed using a two-level inverter and an H-bridge (HB) in cascade from one end and a floating capacitor-based two-level inverter cascaded with an HB from the other end to drive an open-end winding induction motor (OEWIM). All the HB capacitor voltages are balanced by using space vector redundancy. The claim of balancing the capacitor voltages throughout the whole modulation range is verified experimentally in this article. This article presents an interleaved buck-type rectifier with pseudo-dc-link capacitors featuring automatic current balancing, soft-switching operation, efficient ac-dc conversion, and tight output regulation. The ac-input-current-synchronized modulation scheme that hybridizes for cycle-by-cycle phase-shift and duty ratio adjustment is adopted for zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation and output regulation. In addition, the pseudo-dc-link capacitors facilitate the convergence and current balancing between output inductors. Mathematical models are provided to quantitatively describe the mechanism of current balancing, steady-state performance, and dynamic response. Recent studies have shown that the grid connection of offshore wind farms through modular multilevel converter–high voltage direct current (MMC-HVdc) transmission system has brought low inertia issue. It is an urgent requirement for offshore wind farms to compensate for the inertia. After analysis and evaluation in this article, it is found that integrating an ultracapacitor energy storage system (UESS) into an MMC has an advantage comprehensively considering cost, size, and dynamic. Based on the evaluation, this article proposes an approach to inertial compensation of HVdc offshore wind farms by MMC-UESS integration. An ultracapacitor is selected as an energy storage element (ESE) for its high power density since the inertial response is a short-term response and it is hoped that added ESE does not significantly increase the size of an MMC submodule. Batteries with high energy density but low power density are not suitable for such applications. The optimal operating voltage of a UESS and the control scheme between MMC loops and inertial emulation are proposed in this article. This article proposes a fixed switching frequency (FSF)-based improved model predictive control (MPC) for a five-level active neutral-point clamped (5L-ANPC) converter. Compared to the conventional MPC for 5L-ANPC converter, the proposed MPC significantly reduces the computational burden while ensuring the balance of dc-link and flying capacitor voltages. The proposed MPC optimally selects the control voltage vectors to reduce common mode voltage (CMV), leading to a small CMV of the converter. Using three voltage vectors action per control cycle in MPC, FSF is achieved. Steady-state and dynamic performances of the proposed MPC have been evaluated by experiments.
