Periodicity is a frequently happening phenomenon for social interactions in temporal networks. Mining periodic communities are essential to understanding periodic group behaviors in temporal networks. Unfortunately, most previous studies for community mining in temporal networks ignore the periodic patterns of communities. In this paper, we study the problem of seeking periodic communities in a temporal network, where each edge is associated with a set of timestamps. We propose novel models, including $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -core and $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -clique, that represent periodic communities in temporal networks. Specifically, a $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -core (or $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -clique) is a $k$ k -core (or clique with size larger than $k$ k ) that appears at least $\sigma$ σ times periodically in the temporal graph. The problem of searching periodic core is efficient but the resulting communities may be not enough cohesive; the problem of enumerating all periodic cliques is not efficient (NP-hard) but the resulting communities are very cohesive. To compute all of them efficiently, we first develop two effective graph reduction techniques to significantly prune the temporal graph. Then, we transform the temporal graph into a static graph and prove that mining the periodic communities in the temporal graph equals mining communities in the transformed graph. Subsequently, we propose a decomposition algorithm to search maximal $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -core, a Bron-Kerbosch style algorithm to enumerate all maximal $\sigma$ σ -periodic $k$ k -cliques, and a branch-and-bound style algorithm to find the maximum $\sigma$ σ -periodic clique. Network partition in complex power networks is essential for the var-voltage control. Traditional partition methods such as Ward method are applied in practical power networks, but they are unable to evaluate the quality of partition results. Moreover, they lack efficiency when dealing with large-scale networks. Since complex operation characteristics and topology have emerged in recent power systems, the power grid partition requires higher efficiency and quality. Therefore, this paper proposes a fast network partition method with a balanced-depth-based community detection algorithm. Its aim is to significantly improve the efficiency of partition while maintaining high quality of partition, with which the inter-zone coupling is minimized while the intra-zone coupling is maximized. In the meantime, a surrogate-optimization-based selection algorithm is proposed to select the zonal pilot bus, based on which the secondary voltage control method is used to evaluate the quality of partition. Results from four case studies conducted in various power networks with different sizes, as compared to other partition methods, validate the high efficiency and high quality of the proposed power grid partition approach. It is widely acknowledged that the success of deep learning is built upon large-scale training data and tremendous computing power. However, the data and computing power are not always available for many real-world applications. In this paper, we address the machine learning problem where it lacks training data and limits computing power. Specifically, we investigate domain adaptation which is able to transfer knowledge from one labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain, so that we do not need much training data from the target domain. At the same time, we consider the situation that the running environment is confined, e.g., in edge computing the end device has very limited running resources. Technically, we present the Faster Domain Adaptation (FDA) protocol and further report two paradigms of FDA: early stopping and amid skipping. The former accelerates domain adaptation by multiple early exit points. The latter speeds up the adaptation by wisely skip several amid neural network blocks. Extensive experiments on standard benchmarks verify that our method is able to achieve the comparable and even better accuracy but employ much less computing resources. To the best of our knowledge, there are very few works which investigated accelerating knowledge adaptation in the community. This work is expected to inspire the topic for more discussion. During the detailed design phase of an aerospace program, one of the most important consistency checks is to ensure that no two distinct objects occupy the same physical space. Since exact geometrical modeling is usually intractable, geometry models are discretized, which often introduces small interferences not present in the fully detailed model. In this paper, we focus on computing the depth of the interference, so that these false positive interferences can be removed, and attention can be properly focused on the actual design. Specifically, we focus on efficiently computing the penetration depth between two polyhedra, which is a well-studied problem in the computer graphics community. We formulate the problem as a constrained five-variable global optimization problem, and then derive an equivalent unconstrained, two-variable nonsmooth problem. To solve the optimization problem, we apply a popular stochastic multistart optimization algorithm in a novel way, which exploits the advantages of each problem formulation simultaneously. Numerical results for the algorithm, applied to 14 randomly generated pairs of penetrating polytopes, illustrate both the effectiveness and efficiency of the method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Once deployed, a decentralized blockchain system ensures that it will operate faithfully so that no one can interfere with or manipulate its predefined regulations, such as block size and block creation interval investigated in this paper. However, fixed regulations prevent that system from adapting to the change of the environment, such as increasing the underlying network capacity, and result in sub-optimal performance. For example, Bitcoin remains at 7 TPS (transactions per second), even operating over the current Internet. In this paper, we propose a new paradigm for defining the behavior of a consensus system, named as Meta-Regulation, which allows autonomous evolution of the system behavior. A meta-regulation adjusts the actual behavior of a consensus system in response to the changing capacity of the underlying infrastructure and the community of participants. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed meta-regulation by achieving significantly improved throughput and latency for Bitcoin, adapted to the current capacity of the Internet. Our experimental results show that Meta-Regulation can achieve at least $7\times $ performance improvement over Bitcoin network deployed in 2009, resulting in 49.7 TPS or 68% reduction confirmation latency by fully utilizing the bandwidth and the computing power of average network nodes. Community search that finds query-dependent communities has been studied on various kinds of graphs. As one instance of community search, intimate-core group (community) search over a weighted graph is to find a connected $k$ k -core containing all query nodes with the smallest group weight. However, existing state-of-the-art methods start from the maximal $k$ k -core to refine an answer, which is practically inefficient for large networks. In this paper, we develop an efficient framework, called local exploration k-core search (LEKS), to find intimate-core groups in graphs. We propose a small-weighted spanning tree to connect query nodes, and then expand the tree level by level to a connected $k$ k -core, which is finally refined as an intimate-core group. In addition, to support the intimate group search over large weighted graphs, we develop a weighted-core index (WC-index) and two new WC-index-based algorithms for expansion and refinement phases in LEKS. Specifically, we propose a WC-index-based expansion to efficiently find a candidate graph of intimate-core group, leveraging on a two-level expansion of $k$ k -breadth and 1-depth. We propose two graph removal strategies: coarse-grained refinement is designed for large graphs to delete a batch of nodes in a few iterations; fine-grained refinement is designed for small graphs to remove nodes carefully and achieve high-quality answers. This paper considers the problem of adaptive group testing for isolating up to $k$ defective items from a population of size $n$. There exist restrictions or preferences which determine how the items can be pooled for testing. A graphical model formalizes the pooling restrictions and preferences. Such graph-constrained group testing is investigated in three settings: populations with defectives, populations facing the potential presence of inhibitors, and populations with community structures. Adaptive group testing frameworks are provided for each setting. In populations without inhibitors, existing non adaptive frameworks can isolate the defective items perfectly with $\Theta(k \log n/k)$ number of tests, where is the $\beta$ -mixing time of a random walk over the underlying graph. This paper provides a two-stage framework that can perfectly isolate up to $k$ defective items for a regular graph using $\Theta(k2 \log n k + k)$ number of tests, thus achieving an approximate gain of a factor of $k$ over the non-adaptive frameworks. This twostage framework's principles are extended to community-structured graphs and graphs with up to $r$ inhibitor items. In particular, when inhibitors are present in the graph, a four-stage group testing framework is proposed. The results show that in the regime $r= O(k)$ for a fully connected graph, $\Theta ((k+r)\log n/(k+r) + r\log n)$ tests are sufficient for isolating the defective items. In this paper, the decentralized energy management of a community of prosumers is studied. The coordination of the prosumers participating in the community is cast as a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) with local and global coupling constraints. A dual decomposition method with a tightening of the coupling constraints is applied to solve the problem in a decentralized way. The resulting tightened problem provides feasibility guarantees for the obtained solutions. A receding horizon approach that exploits the structure of the problem is proposed to divide the problem in subproblems and solve them sequentially. The proposed approach ensures that the tightened problem is feasible under realistic conditions, whereas the existing methods may result in infeasible problems. Moreover, it may reduce the necessary constraint tightening compared to existing methods. Two setups are evaluated for the organizational structure of the community, one with a community coordinator and one without. Moreover, three different structures of the communication graph are analyzed for the setup without a coordinator. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method results in feasible problems that can be solved due to the reduced constraint tightening when other methods are not feasible. In the case of feasible problems, the optimality gap is comparable to that achieved with existing methods and even smaller for communities with a small number of participating prosumers. Preventing fake or duplicate digital identities (aka sybils) from joining a digital community may be crucial to its survival, especially if it utilizes a consensus protocol among its members or employs democratic governance, where sybils can undermine consensus, tilt decisions, or even take over. Here, we explore the use of a trust-graph of identities, with edges representing trust among identity owners, to allow a community to grow indefinitely without increasing its sybil penetration. Since identities are admitted to the digital community based on their trust by existing digital community members, corrupt identities, which may trust sybils, also pose a threat to the digital community. Sybils and their corrupt perpetrators are together referred to as byzantines, and the overarching aim is to limit their penetration into a digital community. We propose two alternative tools to achieve this goal. One is graph conductance, which works under the assumption that honest people are averse to corrupt ones and tend to distrust them. The second is vertex expansion, which relies on the assumption that there are not too many corrupt identities in the community. Of particular interest is keeping the fraction of byzantines below one third, as it would allow the use of Byzantine Agreement (Lamport et al., 1982) for consensus as well as for sybil-resilient social choice (Shahaf et al., 2019). This paper considers incrementally growing a trust graph and shows that, under its key assumptions and additional requirements, including keeping the conductance or vertex expansion of the community trust graph sufficiently high, a community may grow safely, indefinitely. Researchers and educators in humanities such as computational linguists, digital humanists, and those doing historical reconstructions are increasingly heavy users of computational and/or data resources. Many know about activities, working groups, and initiatives around the findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable (FAIR) principles and are a driving force for improving the sharing of data and software. However, it seems humanities researchers are less aware of the science gateways community and the end-to-end solutions that science gateways could provide, therefore lacking a driving force for adoption of this technology. This small-scale exploratory study will clarify some of the challenges and needs faced by computational researchers in the humanities that may explain their relatively low participation in the science gateways community. Cross-modality face image synthesis such as sketch-to-photo, NIR-to-RGB, and RGB-to-depth has wide applications in face recognition, face animation, and digital entertainment. Conventional cross-modality synthesis methods usually require paired training data, i.e., each subject has images of both modalities. However, paired data can be difficult to acquire, while unpaired data commonly exist. In this paper, we propose a novel semi-supervised cross-modality synthesis method (namely CMOS-GAN), which can leverage both paired and unpaired face images to learn a robust cross-modality synthesis model. Specifically, CMOS-GAN uses a generator of encoder-decoder architecture for new modality synthesis. We leverage pixel-wise loss, adversarial loss, classification loss, and face feature loss to exploit the information from both paired multi-modality face images and unpaired face images for model learning. In addition, since we expect the synthetic new modality can also be helpful for improving face recognition accuracy, we further use a modified triplet loss to retain the discriminative features of the subject in the synthetic modality. Experiments on three cross-modality face synthesis tasks (NIR-to-VIS, RGB-to-depth, and sketch-to-photo) show the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared with the state-of-the-art. In addition, we also collect a large-scale RGB-D dataset (VIPL-MumoFace-3K) for the RGB-to-depth synthesis task. Conventional machine learning algorithms suffer the problem that the model trained on existing data fails to generalize well to the data sampled from other distributions. To tackle this issue, unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) transfers the knowledge learned from a well-labeled source domain to a different but related target domain where labeled data is unavailable. The majority of existing UDA methods assume that data from the source domain and the target domain are available and complete during training. Thus, the divergence between the two domains can be formulated and minimized. In this paper, we consider a more practical yet challenging UDA setting where either the source domain data or the target domain data are unknown. Conventional UDA methods would fail this setting since the domain divergence is agnostic due to the absence of the source data or the target data. Technically, we investigate UDA from a novel view—adversarial attack—and tackle the divergence-agnostic adaptive learning problem in a unified framework. Specifically, we first report the motivation of our approach by investigating the inherent relationship between UDA and adversarial attacks. Then we elaborately design adversarial examples to attack the training model and harness these adversarial examples. We argue that the generalization ability of the model would be significantly improved if it can defend against our attack, so as to improve the performance on the target domain. Theoretically, we analyze the generalization bound for our method based on domain adaptation theories. Extensive experimental results on multiple UDA benchmarks under conventional, source-absent and target-absent UDA settings verify that our method is able to achieve a favorable performance compared with previous ones. To fight against infectious diseases (e.g., SARS, COVID-19, Ebola, etc.), government agencies, technology companies and health institutes have launched various contact tracing approaches to identify and notify the people exposed to infection sources. However, existing tracing approaches can lead to severe privacy and security concerns, thereby preventing their secure and widespread use among communities. To tackle these problems, this paper proposes CoAvoid, an edge-based, privacy-preserved contact tracing system that features good dependability and usability. CoAvoid leverages the Google/Apple Exposure Notification (GAEN) API to achieve decent device compatibility and operating efficiency. It utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to detect close contact with other people and leverages GPS with fine-grained matching algorithms to verify user information. In addition, to enhance privacy protection, CoAvoid applies fuzzification and obfuscation measures to shelter sensitive data, making both servers and users agnostic to information of both low and high-risk populations. The evaluation demonstrates good efficacy and security of CoAvoid. Compared with four state-of-the-art contact tracing applications, CoAvoid can reduce the size of upload data by at least 90% and reduce the verification time by 92%. In this paper, we conduct an extensive study on the use of pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for omnidirectional image quality assessment (IQA). To cope with the lack of available IQA databases, transfer learning from seven pre-trained CNN models is investigated over retraining on standard 2D databases. In addition, we explore the influence of various image representations and training strategies on the model’s performance. A comparison of the use of projected versus radial content, and multichannel CNN versus patch-wise training is also covered. The experimental results on two publicly available databases are used to draw conclusions about which strategy best fits the visual quality prediction and at which computational cost. The analysis shows that retraining CNN models on 2D IQA databases improves the prediction accuracy. The latter and the required computational time are found to be significantly affected by the training strategy. Cross-database evaluations demonstrate that the nature and variety of the content impact the generalization ability of the models. Finally, we show that conclusions coming from other image processing communities may not hold for IQA. Packet classification, i.e., the process of categorizing packets into flows, is a first-class citizen in any networking device. Every time a new packet has to be processed, one or more header fields need to be compared against a set of pre-installed rules. This is done for basic forwarding operations, to apply security policies, application-specific processing, or quality-of-service guarantees. A lot of research efforts have identified better lookup techniques, i.e., finding the best match between packet headers and rules, by capitalizing on the rule sets characteristics. Here, ClassBench has greatly served the community by enabling the generation of IPv4 rule sets. In this paper, we present a new tool, ClassBench-ng, that creates synthetic IPv4, IPv6, and OpenFlow rules. We start from an analysis of classification rules deployed in-the-wild and we use the findings to craft our solution. ClassBench-ng can generate a user-defined number of rules as well as an associated header trace matching them. Compared to state-of-the-art solutions, the rule set generation process is usually more accurate and it is able to produce rules matching a number of different use cases, i.e., from an IPv4 router to an OpenFlow switch, which is unique among current rule set generation tools. Multi-view clustering has attracted increasing attention in multimedia, machine learning and data mining communities. As one kind of the essential multi-view clustering algorithm, multi-view subspace clustering (MVSC) becomes more and more popular due to its strong ability to reveal the intrinsic low dimensional clustering structure hidden across views. Despite superior clustering performance in various applications, we observe that existing MVSC methods directly fuse multi-view information in the similarity level by merging noisy affinity matrices; and isolate the processes of affinity learning, multi-view information fusion and clustering. Both factors may cause insufficient utilization of multi-view information, leading to unsatisfying clustering performance. This paper proposes a novel consensus one-step multi-view subspace clustering (COMVSC) method to address these issues. Instead of directly fusing multiple affinity matrices, COMVSC optimally integrates discriminative partition-level information, which is helpful to eliminate noise among data. Moreover, the affinity matrices, consensus representation and final clustering labels matrix are learned simultaneously in a unified framework. By doing so, the three steps can negotiate with each other to best serve the clustering task, leading to improved performance. Accordingly, we propose an iterative algorithm to solve the resulting optimization problem. Support vector machines (SVM) have drawn wide attention for the last two decades due to its extensive applications, so a vast body of work has developed optimization algorithms to solve SVM with various soft-margin losses. To distinguish all, in this paper, we aim at solving an ideal soft-margin loss SVM: $L_{0/1}$ L 0 / 1 soft-margin loss SVM (dubbed as $L_{0/1}$ L 0 / 1 -SVM). Many of the existing (non)convex soft-margin losses can be viewed as one of the surrogates of the $L_{0/1}$ L 0 / 1 soft-margin loss. Despite its discrete nature, we manage to establish the optimality theory for the $L_{0/1}$ L 0 / 1 -SVM including the existence of the optimal solutions, the relationship between them and P-stationary points. These not only enable us to deliver a rigorous definition of $L_{0/1}$ L 0 / 1 support vectors but also allow us to define a working set. Integrating such a working set, a fast alternating direction method of multipliers is then proposed with its limit point being a locally optimal solution to the $L_{0/1}$ L 0 / 1 -SVM. Finally, numerical experiments demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms some leading classification solvers from SVM communities, in terms of faster computational speed and a fewer number of support vectors. It is common for communities in real-world networks to possess hierarchical and overlapping structures, which make community detection even more challenging. In this paper, by investigating consensus process of the classical DeGroot model in opinion dynamics, we propose a novel method based on the cumulative opinion distance (COD) to discover hierarchical and overlapping communities. It is shown that this method is different from those classical algorithms relying on static fitness metrics that depict the inhomogeneous connectivity across the network. The proposed method is validated from two aspects. First, by estimating the eigenvectors of adjacency matrices, we investigate the detectability limit of our algorithms on random networks, which together with the results concerning the convergence speed of consensus guarantees the performance of our method theoretically. Second, experiments on both large scale real-world networks and artificial benchmarks show that our method is very effective and competitive on hierarchical modular graphs. We examine the problem of uncovering communities in complex real-world networks whose elements and their respective associations manifest as streams of data. Community detection is applied in emerging computational environments and concerns critical applications in diverse areas including social computing, web analysis, IoT and biology. Despite the already expended related research efforts, the task of revealing the community structure of massive and rapidly-evolving networks remains very challenging. More specifically, there is an emerging need for online approaches that ingest graph data as a stream. In this paper, we propose a streaming-graph community-detection algorithm that expands seed-sets of nodes to communities. We consider an online setting and process a stream of edges while aiming to form communities on-the-fly using partial knowledge of the graph structure. We use space-efficient structures to maintain very limited information regarding the nodes of the graph and the sought communities, so as to effectively process large scale networks. In addition to our novel streaming approach, we develop a technique that increases the accuracy of our algorithm considerably and additionally propose a new clustering algorithm that allows for automatically deriving the size of the communities we seek to detect. Using ground-truth communities for a wide range of large real-word and synthetic networks, our experimental evaluation shows that our approach does achieve accuracy comparable, and oftentimes better, to the state-of-the-art non-streaming community detection algorithms. Although individual anxiety evaluation has been well studied, there is still not much work on evaluating public anxiety of groups, especially in the form of communities on social networks, which can be leveraged to detect mental healthness of a society. However, we cannot simply average individual anxiety scores to evaluate a community's public anxiety, because following factors should be considered: (1) impacts from interpersonal relations on each individual group member's anxiety levels (the ${\tt Structural}$ Structural component); (2) topic-based discussions which reflect a community's anxiety status (the ${\tt Topical}$ Topical component). In this paper, we initiate the study of evaluating public anxiety of Topic-based Social Network Communities ($\textsc {TSNC}$ T S N C ). We propose an evaluation framework to project the anxiety level of a $\textsc {TSNC}$ T S N C into a score in the [0,1] range. We devise a cascading model to dynamically compute the individual anxiety scores using the ${\tt Structural}$ Structural influence. We design a probabilistic model to measure anxiety score of social network messages using a generalized user, and compose a tree structure (${\tt MC}$ MC - ${\tt Tree}$ Tree ) to effectively compute the anxiety score of a $\textsc {TSNC}$ T S N C from the ${\tt Topical}$ Topical aspect. For large communities, to avoid expensive real-time computing, we use a small sample to compute the public anxiety within given confidence interval. A graph is an abstract model that represents relations among entities, for example, the interactions between characters in a novel. A background story endows entities and relations with real-world meanings and describes the semantics and context of the abstract model, for example, the actual story that the novel presents. Considering practical experience and prior research, human viewers who are familiar with the background story of a graph and those who do not know the background story may perceive the same graph differently. However, no previous research has adequately addressed this problem. This research article thus presents an evaluation that investigated the effects of background stories on graph perception. Three hypotheses that focused on the role of visual focus areas, graph structure identification, and mental model formation on graph perception were formulated and guided three controlled experiments that evaluated the hypotheses using real-world graphs with background stories. An analysis of the resulting experimental data, which compared the performance of participants who read and did not read the background stories, obtained a set of instructive findings. First, having knowledge about a graph's background story influences participants’ focus areas during interactive graph explorations. Second, such knowledge significantly affects one's ability to identify community structures but not high degree and bridge structures. Third, this knowledge influences graph recognition under blurred visual conditions. Driven by real-life applications in geo-social networks, we study the problem of computing radius-bounded $k$ k -cores (RB- $k$ k -cores) that aims to find communities satisfying both social and spatial constraints. In particular, the model $k$ k -core (i.e., the subgraph where each vertex has at least $k$ k neighbors) is used to ensure the social cohesiveness, and a radius-bounded circle is used to restrict the locations of users in an RB- $k$ k -core. We explore several algorithmic paradigms to compute RB- $k$ k -cores, including a triple-vertex-based paradigm, a binary-vertex-based paradigm, and a paradigm utilizing the concept of rotating circles. The rotating-circle-based paradigm is further enhanced by several pruning techniques to achieve better efficiency. In addition, to find representative RB- $k$ k -cores, we study the diversified radius-bounded $k$ k -core search problem, which finds $t$ t RB- $k$ k -cores to cover the most number of vertices. We first propose a baseline algorithm that identifies the distinctive RB- $k$ k -cores after finding all the RB- $k$ k -cores. Beyond this, we design algorithms that can efficiently maintain the top- $t$ t candidate RB- $k$ k -cores and also achieve a guaranteed approximation ratio. Experimental studies on both real and synthetic datasets demonstrate that our proposed techniques can efficiently compute (diversified) RB- $k$ k -cores. Grasp stability recognition based on tactile perception has attracted increasing attention in the robotics community. In this article, we extract tactile features from multimodal tactile signals and propose a novel ensemble approach named genetic algorithm-based ensemble hybrid sparse extreme learning machine (GA-EHSELM) for the grasp stability recognition task. In contrast to traditional ensemble extreme learning machines (ELMs), the proposed approach takes the sparsity of the random weights assigned to the connection between the input layer and the hidden layer for each base learner into consideration, in order to avoid the problem of overfitting. In addition, The diversity of base learners is increased by constructing two types of sparse ELM (SELM). The random weights of the base SELMs are sampled from two different distributions with a certain probability. Furthermore, we utilize the genetic algorithm (GA) for the optimization of tactile features and the base sparse ELMs. To be specific, GA is employed for feature selection as well as the optimization of the sparsity of the random weights associated with different types of base learners and the number of each type of base learner. Nowadays, due to many limitations in reality, the optimization of tracking precision and convergence time has attracted the attention of researchers in robotics community. In this article, a fixed-time adaptive neural network (NN) controller is proposed for unknown robot manipulators. A switching mechanism is integrated into the control design such that the semiglobal stability of the conventional NN control systems can be extended to global stability. The time-varying barrier Lyapunov function and the fixed-time control technique are incorporated into the controller design to guarantee the prescribed motion constraints and the fixed-time convergence simultaneously. Compared with some existing fixed-time NN control algorithms, the assumption that NN weight should be upper bounded can be relaxed in our work. Finally, the simulation and experiment studies are respectively carried out based on an unknown 2-degree of freedom robot and a Baxter robot to demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed control scheme. Due to their increasing complexity, today’s software systems are frequently built by leveraging reusable code in the form of libraries and packages. Software ecosystems (e.g., npm) are the primary enablers of this code reuse, providing developers with a platform to share their own and use others’ code. These ecosystems evolve rapidly: developers add new packages every day to solve new problems or provide alternative solutions, causing obsolete packages to decline in their importance to the community. Developers should avoid depending on packages in decline, as these packages are reused less over time and may become less frequently maintained. However, current popularity metrics (e.g., Stars, and Downloads) are not fit to provide this information to developers because their semantics do not aptly capture shifts in the community interest. In this article, we propose a scalable approach that uses the package’s centrality in the ecosystem to identify packages in decline. We evaluate our approach with the npm ecosystem and show that the trends of centrality over time can correctly distinguish packages in decline with an ROC–AUC of 0.9. The approach can capture 87% of the packages in decline, on average 18 months before the trend is shown in currently used package popularity metrics. SOTER,1 a cybersecurity incident management playbook, is developed to provide a comprehensive model to manage cybersecurity incidents, particularly for the cybersecurity operations center. The proposed playbook is adaptive, cross-sectorial, and process driven. Each key components of the incident management playbook are outlined and discussed. Furthermore, a lexicon based on equivalence mapping is developed and used to map existing cybersecurity incident vocabulary and taxonomy into a common and consistent lexicon to aid understanding among incident management stakeholder communities—national, government, and private sectors. A versatile workbook model has been explored, which proves to be adaptable to serve a wide range of cases for successfully managing government and private sector security operations center. Cybersecurity incident sharing partnership, formalism for metric and measurements of cybersecurity incident parameters, and cybersecurity incident classification and prioritization schemes are presented, and finally, cybersecurity incident “plays” and playbook templates are discussed. This article presents a simple yet effective method for computing geodesic distances on triangle meshes. Unlike the popular window propagation methods that partition mesh edges into intervals of varying lengths, our method places evenly-spaced, source-independent Steiner points on edges. Given a source vertex, our method constructs a Steiner-point graph that partitions the surface into mutually exclusive tracks, called geodesic tracks. Inside each triangle, the tracks form sub-regions in which the change of distance field is approximately linear. Our method does not require any pre-computation, and can effectively balance speed and accuracy. Experimental results show that with 5 Steiner points on each edge, the mean relative error is less than 0.3 $\%$ % for common 3D models used in the graphics community. We propose a set of effective filtering rules to eliminate a large amount of useless broadcast events. For a 1000K-face model, our method runs 10 times faster than the conventional Steiner point method that examines a complete graph of Steiner points in each triangle. We also observe that using more Steiner points increases the accuracy at only a small extra computational cost. Our method works well for meshes with poor triangulation and non-manifold configuration, which often poses challenges to the existing PDE methods. We show that geodesic tracks, as a new data structure that encodes rich information of discrete geodesics, support accurate geodesic path and isoline tracing, and efficient distance query. Knowledge of human perception has long been incorporated into visualizations to enhance their quality and effectiveness. The last decade, in particular, has shown an increase in perception-based visualization research studies. With all of this recent progress, the visualization community lacks a comprehensive guide to contextualize their results. In this report, we provide a systematic and comprehensive review of research studies on perception related to visualization. This survey reviews perception-focused visualization studies since 1980 and summarizes their research developments focusing on low-level tasks, further breaking techniques down by visual encoding and visualization type. In particular, we focus on how perception is used to evaluate the effectiveness of visualizations, to help readers understand and apply the principles of perception of their visualization designs through a task-optimized approach. Recently, large-scale multiobjective optimization has received increasing attention from the evolutionary multiobjective optimization (EMO) community. This has led to the emergence of a specialized research area called evolutionary large-scale multiobjective optimization (ELMO). In general, it is believed that multiobjective optimization problems become more difficult as the number of decision variables increases. However, the following two counterintuitive observations are obtained from careful examinations of recent ELMO studies. One is that experimental results on some large-scale multiobjective test problems were improved by increasing the number of decision variables. The other is that better results were obtained for some other large-scale multiobjective test problems by conventional EMO algorithms (EMOAs) than state-of-the-art ELMO algorithms (ELMOAs). These observations suggest that ELMOAs have not always been evaluated on appropriate test problems. Moreover, their performance is not always better than the performance of conventional EMOAs. In this letter, we first re-examine the performance of ELMOAs and conventional EMOAs on a wide variety of scalable multiobjective test problems. Then, counterintuitive experimental results are analyzed using the anytime performance evaluation scheme and distributions of randomly generated initial solutions. While the VLSI community cares about designs with high yields under process variations, expensive computational costs make conventional yield optimization methods for analog circuits inefficient for industrial applications. In this article, an efficient yield optimization method via the freeze–thaw Bayesian optimization technique is proposed for analog circuits. The yield analysis is integrated into the exploration process of the Bayesian optimization. With a specified Gaussian process regression method, the flexible freeze–thaw Bayesian optimization technique is utilized to automatically guide the search in the design space and control the accuracy of yield analysis in the process space. A performance optimization problem is formulated and solved to mine prior knowledge, and a further speed up is achieved. Multiview stereopsis (MVS) methods, which can reconstruct both the 3D geometry and texture from multiple images, have been rapidly developed and extensively investigated from the feature engineering methods to the data-driven ones. However, there is no dataset containing both the 3D geometry of large-scale scenes and high-resolution observations of small details to benchmark the algorithms. To this end, we present GigaMVS, the first gigapixel-image-based 3D reconstruction benchmark for ultra-large-scale scenes. The gigapixel images, with both wide field-of-view and high-resolution details, can clearly observe both the Palace-scale scene structure and Relievo-scale local details. The ground-truth geometry is captured by the laser scanner, which covers ultra-large-scale scenes with an average area of 8667 m $^2$ 2 and a maximum area of 32007 m $^2$ 2 . Owing to the extremely large scale, complex occlusion, and gigapixel-level images, GigaMVS exposes problems that emerge from the poor scalability and efficiency of the existing MVS algorithms. We thoroughly investigate the state-of-the-art methods in terms of geometric and textural measurements, which point to the weakness of the existing methods and promising opportunities for future works. Quantum communications is a promising technology that will play a fundamental role in the design of future networks. In fact, significant efforts are being undertaken by both the quantum physics and the classical communications communities on developing new architectures, solutions, and practical implementations of quantum communication networks (QCNs). Although these efforts led to various advances in today's technologies, there still exists a non-trivial gap between the research efforts of the two communities on designing and optimizing the performance of QCNs. For instance, most prior works by the classical communications community ignore important quantum physics-based constraints when designing QCNs. For example, many existing works on entanglement distribution do not account for the decoherence of qubits inside quantum memories and, thus, their designs become impractical since they assume an infinite lifetime of quantum states. In this article, we bring forth a novel analysis of the performance of QCNs in a physics-informed manner, by relying on the quantum physics principles that underly the different components of QCNs. The need for the physics-informed approach is then assessed and its fundamental role in designing practical QCNs is analyzed across various open research areas. Moreover, we identify novel physics-informed performance metrics and controls that enable QCNs to leverage the state-of-theart advancements in quantum technologies to enhance their performance. Finally, we analyze multiple pressing challenges and open research directions in QCNs that must be treated using a physics-informed approach to lead practically viable results. Ultimately, this work attempts to bridge the gap between the classical communications and the quantum physics communities in the area of QCNs to foster the development of the future communication networks toward the quantum Internet. Since real-world objects and their interactions are often multi-modal and multi-typed, heterogeneous networks have been widely used as a more powerful, realistic, and generic superclass of traditional homogeneous networks (graphs). Meanwhile, representation learning (a.k.a. embedding) has recently been intensively studied and shown effective for various network mining and analytical tasks. In this work, we aim to provide a unified framework to deeply summarize and evaluate existing research on heterogeneous network embedding (HNE), which includes but goes beyond a normal survey. Since there has already been a broad body of HNE algorithms, as the first contribution of this article, we provide a generic paradigm for the systematic categorization and analysis over the merits of various existing HNE algorithms. Moreover, existing HNE algorithms, though mostly claimed generic, are often evaluated on different datasets. Understandable due to the application favor of HNE, such indirect comparisons largely hinder the proper attribution of improved task performance towards effective data preprocessing and novel technical design, especially considering the various ways possible to construct a heterogeneous network from real-world application data. Therefore, as the second contribution, we create four benchmark datasets with various properties regarding scale, structure, attribute/label availability, and etc. from different sources, towards handy and fair evaluations of HNE algorithms. As the third contribution, we carefully refactor and amend the implementations and create friendly interfaces for 13 popular HNE algorithms, and provide all-around comparisons among them over multiple tasks and experimental settings. By putting all existing HNE algorithms under a unified framework, we aim to provide a universal reference and guideline for the understanding and development of HNE algorithms. The problem of computing in an efficient and accurate way the armor losses in three-core AC submarine cables has been of great interest to the offshore cable community for some years. Indeed, efficiency of the computation method is crucial to allow comprehensive parametric analysis as might be needed in the design study. In (Giussani et al. 2021), an algorithm based on integral equations for performing such calculations with an accuracy comparable (within acceptable tolerances) to state-of-the-art Finite Element Method (FEM) approaches was presented. In the present study, we extend the above mentioned algorithm to account for the mutual inductive coupling between armor wires and metallic screens, which are often present in actual cables structure. We show that the most notable properties of the original algorithm are preserved in this coupled formulation. In particular we discuss how exploiting the cable structure periodicity and symmetry leads to huge computational cost reductions. The new extended simulation tool is applied to a parametric study to assess how geometry and material properties influence losses and to assess in particular the impact of the metallic sheaths. With the development of deep learning, semantic segmentation has received considerable attention within the robotics community. For semantic segmentation to be applied to mobile robots or autonomous vehicles, real-time processing is essential. In this article, a new real-time semantic segmentation network, called the adjacent feature propagation network (AFPNet), is proposed to achieve high performance and fast inference. AFPNet executes in real time on a commercial embedded GPU. The network includes two new modules. The local memory module (LMM) is the first; it improves the upsampling accuracy by propagating the high-level features to the adjacent grids. The cascaded pyramid pooling module (CPPM) is the second; it reduces computational time by changing the structure of the pyramid pooling module. Using these two modules, the proposed AFPNet achieved 76.4% mean intersection-over-union on the Cityscapes test dataset, outperforming other real-time semantic segmentation networks. Furthermore, AFPNet was successfully deployed on an embedded board Jetson AGX Xavier and applied to the real-world navigation of a mobile robot, proving that AFPNet can be effectively used in a variety of real-time applications. Group recommendation has recently drawn a lot of attention to the recommender system community. Currently, several deep learning-based approaches are leveraged to learn preferences of groups for items and predict next items in which groups may be interested. Yet, their recommendation performance is still unsatisfactory due to sparse group–item interactions. To address this challenge, this study presents a novel model, called group recommendation model with two-stage deep learning (GRMTDL), which encompasses two sequential stages: 1) group representation learning (GRL) and 2) group preference learning (GPL). In GRL, we first construct an undirected tripartite graph over group–user–item interactions, and then employ it to accurately learn group semantic features through a spatial-based variational graph autoencoder network. While in GPL, we first introduce a dual PL-network that contains two structure-sharing subnetworks: 1) group PL-network employed for GPL and 2) user PL-network utilized for user preference learning. Then, we design a novel layered transfer learning (LTL) method to learn group preferences by alternately optimizing these two subnetworks. In particular, it can effectively absorb knowledge of user preferences into the process of GPL. Furthermore, extensive experiments on four real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed GRMTDL model outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines for group recommendation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Revenue maximization (RM) is one of the most important problems in social networks, which attempts to find a small subset of users that make the expected revenue maximized. It has been studied in depth before. However, most of the existing literature was based on nonadaptive seeding strategies and simple information diffusion models. It considered the number of influenced users as a measurement unit to quantify the revenue. Until the emergence of the collaborate game model, it considered the activity as a basic object to compute the revenue. An activity initiated by a user can only influence those users whose distances are within ${k}$ -hop from the initiator. Based on that, we adopt an adaptive seed strategy and formulate an RM under the size budget (RMSB) problem. If taking into account the product’s promotion, we extend it to an RM under the community budget problem, where the influence can be distributed over the whole network uniformly. We can prove that our objective function is adaptive monotone and not adaptive submodular, but it is adaptive submodular in some special cases. We study these two problems under both the special submodular cases and general nonsubmodular cases, and propose RMSBSolver and RMCBSolver to solve them with strong theoretical guarantees, respectively. In particular, we give a data-dependent approximation ratio by adaptive primal curvature for the RMSB in general nonsubmodular cases. This article describes the mission, culture, and practices of RSE teams at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), including their team dynamics and composition, work ethics, standard practices, and ever-evolving skill sets vital to pursuing scientific innovations and implementing novel ideas. We describe the lessons learned from specific activities that contribute to shaping the identity and growth of RSE roles at ORNL. Finally, we provide our view for the near future on effective strategies for establishing, leading, and nurturing RSE teams and building a thriving community in collaboration with science stakeholders. As one of the most commonly used clustering methods, the fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering strategy extends the notion of hard clustering to associate each pattern with every cluster using a membership function. Although a lot of efforts have been made by the clustering community, it is still unclear how to evaluate the fuzziness of different versions of FCM. To fill this theoretical blank, by observing a family of objective functions, a definition of fuzzy degree is provided to quantify the fuzziness of different versions of FCM according to their dedicated objective functions. Then, a general fuzzy C-means (GFCM) clustering algorithm is proposed to solve the clustering problem of using FCM under different distance metrics and fuzzy degrees. From the perspective of fuzzy attribute, the using of this fuzzy degree can be used to reveal the essential difference among a group of FCM-based clustering algorithms, and the proposed GFCM achieves the aim of using objective functions to control the fuzziness of clustering results. Additionally, some properties and relations of these FCM-based clustering algorithms under different fuzzy degrees are discussed and the convergence and stability of the proposed GFCM are proved. Finally, extensive experiments have been performed to demonstrate that by comparison with the effect caused by distance metric, the choices of fuzzy degree have a more significant effect and improvement on the performances of a FCM-based clustering algorithm. The state of the art of electromagnetic integral equations has seen significant growth over the past few decades, overcoming some of the fundamental bottlenecks: computational complexity, low-frequency breakdown, dense-discretization breakdown, preconditioning, and so on. Likewise, the community has seen extensive investment in the development of methods for higher order analysis, in both geometry and physics. Unfortunately, these standard geometric descriptors are continuous, but their normals are discontinuous at the boundary between triangular tessellations of control nodes, or patches, with a few exceptions; as a result, one needs to define additional mathematical infrastructure to define physical basis sets for vector problems. In stark contrast, the geometric representation used for design is second order differentiable almost everywhere on the surfaces. Using these descriptions for analysis opens the door to several possibilities, and is the area we explore in this article. Our focus is on loop subdivision-based isogeometric methods. In this article, our goals are twofold: 1) development of computational infrastructure for isogeometric analysis of electrically large simply connected objects, and 2) introduction of the notion of manifold harmonic transforms and its utility in computational electromagnetics. The widespread utilization of novel technological and societal paradigms gave birth to the development large-scale group decision making. This study focuses on two issues regarding the structure of the large group. The first is about the overlapping clusters/communities (interdependent subgroups) of large-scale experts identified from the dimension reduction process. The second is regarding the situation in which internal and external experts (i.e., heterogeneous experts) exist in a large-scale group decision-making problem simultaneously. To manage the first issue, we propose to use an existing overlapping community detection method to cluster experts considering the independencies of communities. To address the second issue, a delegation mechanism is introduced to allocate the trust weights of external experts to internal experts. Furthermore, to reach a consensus for large-scale experts, a consensus measure based on two reference points (global collective preference and community preference) is given. Adaptive representations are increasingly indispensable for reducing the in-memory and on-disk footprints of large-scale data. Usual solutions are designed broadly along two themes: reducing data precision, e.g., through compression, or adapting data resolution, e.g., using spatial hierarchies. Recent research suggests that combining the two approaches, i.e., adapting both resolution and precision simultaneously, can offer significant gains over using them individually. However, there currently exist no practical solutions to creating and evaluating such representations at scale. In this work, we present a new resolution-precision-adaptive representation to support hybrid data reduction schemes and offer an interface to existing tools and algorithms. Through novelties in spatial hierarchy, our representation, Adaptive Multilinear Meshes (AMM), provides considerable reduction in the mesh size. AMM creates a piecewise multilinear representation of uniformly sampled scalar data and can selectively relax or enforce constraints on conformity, continuity, and coverage, delivering a flexible adaptive representation. AMM also supports representing the function using mixed-precision values to further the achievable gains in data reduction. We describe a practical approach to creating AMM incrementally using arbitrary orderings of data and demonstrate AMM on six types of resolution and precision datastreams. By interfacing with state-of-the-art rendering tools through VTK, we demonstrate the practical and computational advantages of our representation for visualization techniques. With an open-source release of our tool to create AMM, we make such evaluation of data reduction accessible to the community, which we hope will foster new opportunities and future data reduction schemes. Community detection has long been a fundamental problem in network analysis. A great deal of previous research has regarded community detection as an optimization process, where a variety of internal quality metrics are typically treated as objective functions, such as modularity (${Q}$) and weighted community clustering (WCC). However, purely optimizing a predefined quality metric probably results in an extreme unbalance in the scale of the detected communities, e.g., few giant communities with many very small communities. To reveal the true mesoscopic structure inside a big network under the suitable number of communities, we propose a novel community detection framework called LL-GMR, which is a local learning framework based on generalized metric with neighboring regularization. LL-GMR is qualified for both nonoverlapping and overlapping detection tasks. In LL-GMR, we propose a generalized representation and illustrate that it can be instantiated into 12 well-known internal quality metrics. When the generalized metric is used as an objective function, we encode node-level and community-level neighborhood information into two regularization terms to alleviate the dilemma of unbalanced communities. The experimental results show that our LL-GMR consistently outperforms other state-of-the-art community detection approaches in terms of discovering ground-truth communities in six real-life networks. This article provides a comprehensive review on the concept of Energy Communities, their technical and economic motivations, available resources in the literature, trading schemes, price negotiation algorithms, and benefits for the grid. Furthermore, this review describes the policy framework in the European Union to make Energy Communities a reality. Moreover, a brief survey of related projects over the world is presented, along with a discussion around benefits, obstacles, and future research opportunities in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Identifying key research themes is an effective way to chart knowledge structures in a field of research and, in turn, stimulate new ideas and innovation. Most thematic analyses of a research field are based on some form of network analysis, e.g., citations and cowords, and most of these networks are made up of cohesive, highly overlapping groups of nodes. Based on the suggestion that the “universal features” of networks are to be found in these overlapping communities, we argue that these same communities in a keyword network should reveal the key research themes in a field of study. With no traditional method with which to test our theory, we combined a cluster percolation algorithm with a Word2Vec model, and in a case study on information science, we were not only able to detect the overlapping communities in a keyword similarity network, but we also found a new perspective on the importance of overlapping communities as a way to identify a field's key research themes. Community evolution remains a heavily researched and challenging area in the analysis of dynamic complex network structures. Currently, the primary limitation of traditional event-based approaches for community evolution analysis is the lack of strict constraint conditions for distinguishing evolutionary events, which entails that as the cardinality of discovered events increases, so does the number of redundant events. Another limitation of existing approaches is the lack of consideration for weak events. Weak events can be generated by small changes in communities, which are empirically prevalent, and are typically not captured by traditional events. To manage these two aforementioned limitations, this research aims to formalize a weak and strong events-based framework, which includes the following newly discovered events: “weak shrink,” “weak expand,” “weak merge,” and “weak splity” predicated on the community overlapping degree and community degree membership, this article refines these traditional strong events, as well as new constraints for weak events. In addition, a community evolution mining framework, which is based on both strong and weak events, is proposed and denoted by a weak-event-based community evolution method (WECEM). The framework can be summarized by the following: 1) communities in complex networks with adjacent time-stamps are compared to determine the community overlapping degree and community membership degree; 2) the values of the community overlapping degree and membership degree meet the definition of events; and 3) weak events are effectively identified. Extensive experimental results, on real and synthetic data sets consisting of dynamic complex networks and online social networks, demonstrate that WECEM is able to identify weak events more effectively than traditional frameworks. Specifically, WECEM outperforms traditional frameworks by 22.9% in the number of discovered strong events. The detection accuracy of evolutionary events is approximately 12.2% higher than that of traditional event-based frameworks. It is also worth noting that, as the cardinality of the data grows, the proposed framework, when compared with traditional frameworks, can more effectively, and efficiently, mine large-scale complex networks.
