Agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China is the prominent area for agricultural production, but it is also the most typical ecological fragile area with frequent drought disasters. Taking Yulin City at Shaanxi Province in China as the case area, the paper aims to investigate the spatio-temporal changes of agricultural vulnerability to drought in China's agro-pastoral ecotone in the period 2000 to 2020. The results show that: 1) the agricultural vulnerability to drought in Yulin City has shifted from high vulnerability in the period 2000–2010 to low vulnerability in the period 2011–2020. 2) There exist obvious spatio-temporal differences of the agricultural vulnerability to drought in Yulin City during the research period. 3) Four sensitive events and 14 resilient events were identified in the research and the crops of Yulin had become more resilient to drought. Finally, the paper put forward with policy implications to make adaptive strategies of agriculture to climate change in China's agro-pastoral ecotone in the future, e.g., carrying out agricultural zoning based on agricultural production conditions, intensifying the construction of disaster prevention and relief system, and integrating with modern agricultural technology to develop new type agriculture. Droughts are increasing in frequency and intensity as the global climate changes. Risk assessment for agricultural drought disasters is an important approach for disaster prevention and mitigation. Based on the formation mechanism of natural disaster risk, the index system model of agricultural drought risk assessment in North China was constructed, and the robustness of the established risk assessment model was tested by using the internal test method. Then based on the characteristics of agricultural drought risk formation in North China, the paper proposes corresponding risk prevention recommendations. The conclusions were as follows: when adjusting the indices and methods in the risk assessment model, the range of changes in the agricultural drought risk ranking for each city was mostly 1-2.5 places, and the model was relatively robust. With the exception of Beijing and Tianjin, which had the highest disaster prevention and mitigation capacity, central and northern China had the highest agricultural drought risk, which was previously linked to the high risk and vulnerability of these regions. The agricultural drought risk in northern Henan and southern Shandong is low, mainly due to the low risk. The 34 cities in North China can be divided into 6 agricultural drought risk clusters, which are not dispersed in space and cross-city distribution, and have good aggregation. Cluster 4, located in the northernmost mountainous areas, has the highest risk of drought, which is associated with high environmental vulnerability and low capacity for disaster prevention and mitigation, so agricultural areas should be reduced and agricultural input should be increased. Clusters 2, 5 and 6, located in the central and southern regions, have higher grain acreage and yields due to drought, so agricultural drought risk can be further reduced by increasing agricultural input and improving irrigation guarantee rate. The summer monsoon–affected area is a suitable area for agricultural production in China. Against the background of climate warming, the activity of the summer monsoon is changing significantly. The drought and flood disasters in this region are becoming more and more frequent and have a greater and more serious impact on agricultural production. Therefore, based on observational data from meteorological stations and yield loss data in agriculture caused by drought and flood disasters in summer monsoon–affected areas, this paper studied the characteristics of the hazard of disaster-causing factors, the risk of losses to agriculture caused by droughts and floods, and their correlation. Moreover, it compared and analyzed the variability of drought and flood hazard and risk to agriculture before and after a temperature rise. The results showed that the precipitation in summer monsoon–affected areas is obviously affected by monsoon activities, and there is an overall though non-significant positive correlation between annual average standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and the summer monsoon activity index (MI). The drought disaster comprehensive loss rate (DCLR) was generally higher than the flood disaster comprehensive loss rate (FCLR). This shows that the impact of drought on agriculture production is significantly greater than that of floods in this area. The high hazard and risk areas for drought were mainly distributed along the edge of the summer monsoon area and in its vicinity, whereas the high hazard and risk areas for flooding were mainly distributed in the lower reach of the Yangtze, Songhua, and Liaohe Rivers. Among them, Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang are high-risk superposition areas of drought and flood disasters. The hazards of drought and flood dominate the risk of disaster loss. Climate warming has significantly expanded the high-hazard and high-risk ranges in China for drought and flood disasters and has also changed their spatial distribution patterns. The high-hazard area for drought has shifted to the monsoon edge area, the high-risk area for drought has moved northward, and both the high-hazard and the high-risk areas for floods have clearly moved southward. The impact of climate warming on drought was more significant than on floods. The simultaneous occurrence of droughts and floods in neighboring regions amplifies the threats posed by droughts and floods individually. Nonetheless, few studies have been conducted to investigate the simultaneous occurrence of drought and flood events. Here we explore the spatiotemporal characteristics and the shift pattern of droughts and pluvials over Eastern China from a three‐dimensional perspective, using the self‐calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index and the Climate Research Unit data set as well as four regional climate model simulations. We find that Eastern China experienced droughts and pluvials simultaneously in different locations during boreal summer, and it is projected to simultaneously experience more frequent and more intense droughts and pluvials under a warming climate. Specifically, we investigate the pattern of more pluvials in Southeast China and more droughts in Northeast China for the historical period of 1975–2004. This pattern dynamically evolves under climate warming: the pluvial‐dominated regime shifts from Southeast to Northeast China, while the drought‐dominated regime shifts from Northeast to Southeast China. The weakening strength of the western Pacific subtropical high and a northward displacement of the monsoon rain belt may both contribute to the pattern of more pluvials in Northeast China and more droughts in Southeast China. These findings provide insights into the development of adaptation strategies and emergency response plans for enhancing society's resilience to the spatial co‐occurrence of dry and wet extremes. Based on the standardized precipitation evaporation index and reanalysis data, this article reveals that the relationship between the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) and the drought over southern China in summer shifts from an insignificant correlation to a significant negative correlation after 2000. During the significant period (2001–2018), the positive NPO phase corresponds to an anomalous anticyclonic circulation dominating the mid‐low latitude North Pacific, which suppresses the moisture transport into southern China. Meanwhile, the easterly anomalies south of the anomalous anticyclonic circulation prevailing in the equatorial Pacific are coupled with a cooling of sea surface temperature in the central tropical Pacific, which enhances the Walker circulation and further induces an anomalous meridional circulation with the descending anomalies over southern China. Such moisture and dynamical conditions favor the occurrence of drought in southern China. During the former period (1983–2000), however, the NPO‐related atmospheric circulations over the North Pacific shift northward. In this case, the NPO shows insignificant relations with the moisture and dynamical conditions over southern China, thereby diluting the linkage of the NPO to the drought in southern China. The interdecadal strengthening in the relationship between the NPO and above atmospheric conditions is attributed to the westward (southward) extension of the NPO northern (southern) center. The larger interannual variability of spring sea ice in the Bering Sea and the southward movement of summer storm track over the North Pacific are hypothesized to account for the expansion of the NPO structure. In recent decades, droughts frequently occurred in this region and severely affected agriculture production, forest‐fire prevention, and human lives. Therefore, it is very necessary to understand the physical mechanisms underlying the variability of droughts in southern China. In this study, we addressed the relationship of summer drought in southern China with the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO), which is characterized by the north–south seesaw pattern in sea level pressure over the North Pacific. We revealed that their relationship exhibits an interdecadal change around 2000, from an insignificant correlation to a significant negative correlation. Crop production security is an essential guarantee for the prosperity of country and the well‐being of people. In the context of frequent occurrence of extreme weather events, how to comprehensively evaluate the risk of multiple hazards and quantitatively describe spatial differences will be one of the significant topics in agricultural disaster mitigation. In this study, based on the gridded meteorological data and other datasets (crop, socioeconomic, disaster loss, and actual planting location) from 2000 to 2020, multihazard risk model for different growth period was built to assess the comprehensive risk of winter wheat in the upper Huaihe River basin (UHRB), China. The conclusions were as follows: (a) The spatial distribution of continuous rain risk increased gradually from north to south; the area of the highest lodging risk was located in the east; the spatial trend of drought risk was the highest in the south and the lowest in the northeast. (b) The weights of continuous rain, lodging, and drought disasters were 41, 31, and 28%, respectively, which indicated that winter wheat in UHRB was most affected by continuous rain during the harvest period. (c) The spatial distribution of comprehensive disaster risk assessment showed that the higher risk areas were located in the central and southern parts (Huaibin, Linquan, Luoshan). After verification by historical disasters information, the results are credible, providing a concrete scientific basis for implementing regional agricultural disaster response measures. Drought and flood are two of the most destructive natural disasters with the most significant impact and greatest losses in the Dadu River basin (DRB). However, their impacts on people's life have not attracted enough attention from scholars. In this study, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) describing the drought/flood situation and the Composite Index of Human Well-being (CIHW) are calculated, and a framework is further constructed to assess the impacts of drought and flood disasters on human well-being in the DRB. The results show that the annual and seasonal SPI in the DRB generally exhibit an increasing trend in fluctuations during 2000–2009, indicating a wetting climate in this basin. Overall, the upper reaches of the DRB have experienced an evolution of flood-drought-flood state transition, where the variation amplitude of the SPI in the western sub-basin is greater than that in the eastern sub-basin. In addition, the lower reaches of the DRB have suffered more dramatic and periodic changes from the drought/flood disasters in terms of the SPI. For human well-being during 2000–2019, Maerkang City in the upper reaches, Kangding City in the middle reaches, and Shimian County in the lower reaches of the DRB are at a relatively higher level, with the CIHW decreasing from administrative centers to the around. Moreover, the CIHW over the whole basin increases gradually from 2000 to 2019. The SPI has significantly negative effects on different capitals, following a descending order of financial, social, physical, human and natural capitals. The counties of the basin are divided into four groups, namely the group with high disaster risks and high human well-being, the group with high disaster risks and low human well-being, the group with low disaster risks and high human well-being, and the group with low disaster risks and low human well-being. The panel regression results suggest that the construction of water conservancy facilities, the financial inputs in agriculture and meteorology, and the educational level have positive impacts on human well-being, but the impacts differ from different groups. The construction of water conservancy facilities has highly significant impacts on human well-being in all groups; the education level has no significant impact on the group with high disaster risk and high human well-being, which has not passed the significance test; while the financial inputs in agriculture and meteorology have relatively higher impacts on the whole basin and on the group with low disaster risk and low human well-being compared with other groups. Therefore, it is suggested that the negative impacts of drought and flood disasters can be mitigated through strengthening infrastructure construction, responding appropriately to climate change, avoiding disasters at the source of major projects and improving the disaster prevention and mitigation systems. Agricultural drought is a major problem facing China's agricultural production. In this study, the cash crop 'peanut' was used as an example to explore vulnerability. Through the atmosphere–plant–soil continuum system, a single index that could represent different types of droughts affecting peanuts was selected and weighted using the CRITIC weighting method to construct a multi-source data fusion drought index (MFDI). Then, Pearson correlation analysis between the comprehensive drought index and relative meteorological yield and the Mann–Kendall trend test for different growth periods of peanuts were used to verify MFDI and analyze the variation over time. A three-dimensional vulnerability assessment method of drought intensity–drought duration–yield reduction rate was established based on the run theory and trend surface analysis. The results show that the constructed multi-source data fusion drought index (MFDI) can more accurately characterize the actual drought conditions of peanuts in Shandong Province. The MFDI results showed that the drought severity in the coastal areas of the study area decreased with the growth and development of peanuts, while the drought became more severe in the western and northern parts during the late growth period of peanuts. The vulnerability surface of the drought intensity–drought duration–yield reduction rate showed that when the drought intensity was < 0.8 and the duration was < 3.5 months, the vulnerability of peanut crops was low, and then with the increase in drought intensity or duration, the vulnerability increased. The impact of drought duration cannot be ignored. In contrast to traditional vulnerability assessment methods, this study established a three-dimensional vulnerability surface, which provides a new approach for agricultural drought vulnerability assessment. The research results are helpful for a deeper understanding of the relationship between drought and crop vulnerability and provide scientific support for local governments in formulating disaster prevention and mitigation policies. Analyses of the standardized precipitation evaporation index (SPEI), using the season-reliant empirical orthogonal function (S-EOF) method, indicate that the second leading mode of drought over Northeast China features an in-phase variation from spring to summer. Such an in-phase change is closely connected to the persistence of geopotential height anomalies around Lake Baikal. The positive height anomalies around Lake Baikal, with an equivalent barotropic structure in the troposphere, can decrease water vapor transport into Northeast China and induce anomalous descending motion over Northeast China during both seasons, favoring precipitation deficit and high temperature in situ and hence resulting in the synchronous variations of spring and summer droughts. Further investigation reveals that the spring North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) plays a notable role in the in-phase change of spring–summer droughts over Northeast China. The positive phase of spring NAO could induce spring drought over Northeast China directly through its influence on the above atmospheric circulations via a zonal wave train emanating from the North Atlantic. Meanwhile, it can also increase the soil moisture in central Siberia by enhancing the local snow depth. The wetter soil moisture in the following summer, in turn, increases the meridional temperature gradient between the middle and high latitudes and then forces westerly anomalies around 60°N, consequently yielding positive height anomalies around Lake Baikal that favor the occurrence of summer drought over Northeast China. Therefore, the spring NAO is hypothesized to contribute to the in-phase variations of spring–summer droughts over Northeast China through the combined roles of zonal wave train and central Siberian soil moisture. Significance Statement: Northeast China suffers from frequent droughts severely in recent decades. Thus, it is urgent to understand the physical mechanisms of drought in Northeast China. Due to the national nutrition crisis and the adjustment of planting structure, millet has once again become a widely planted cash crop in Northern China. However, as the climate warms in recent years, drought has occurred frequently and repeatedly in Northern China, which has seriously threatened millet production safety in this area. Therefore, it is urgent to clarify the hazard of millet drought disaster and provide reference for the formulation of millet disaster prevention and reduction measures. In this paper, combined with the water demand of millet in each growth period, Standardized Precipitation Requirement Index (SPRI) was selected to identify and quantify the drought disaster of millet. Considering the impact of different degrees of drought in different growth periods, a hazard assessment model is constructed to evaluate the hazard of millet drought disaster in Northern China under the background of climate change. The results show that: (1) SPRI can well characterize the drought of millet in Northern China. (2) In the context of climate change, millet drought in Northern China shows a trend of increasing intensity and decreasing frequency, and it is possible that millet drought will be even more severe in the future. (3) Combined with the hazard assessment model, millet drought in Northern China will still be dominated by middle hazard in the future, but the areas with high hazard will gradually increase, mainly distributed in northeast China, central and western Inner Mongolia and northern Gansu. The research results can be of great practical significance for the adjustment of agricultural production structure in the future, especially for the sustainable development of agriculture and the formulation of measures to prevent and resist agricultural disasters. The refined assessment of the spatiotemporal characteristics of droughts is of great significance for drought evaluation. Based on monthly precipitation and temperature grid data (1961–2019) in the middle reaches of the Yellow River basin (MYRB), the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) was calculated at monthly, seasonal, and annual scales. The run theory was used to extract the drought features at the monthly scale, and the spatiotemporal characteristics of different drought levels were analyzed using Mann–Kendall mutation tests and spatial interpolation. The Moran' I was used to analyze the spatial heterogeneity of droughts. The results showed that the drought trend in the MYRB increased from 1961 to 2019, with the SPEI exhibiting an overall decreasing rate of − 0.1145/decade. Decreasing rates were observed in spring (− 0.1356/decade), summer (− 0.0362/decade), and autumn (− 0.0745/decade), whereas an increasing rate was observed in winter (0.0781/decade). Only extreme droughts were long term, with an intensity as low as − 22.29. The highest frequencies were observed for mild–moderate droughts, which mainly showed high-value clusters in the western and central regions. The frequencies of severe–extreme droughts mainly presented low-value clusters in the northern and southwestern areas. The frequencies of mild and severe droughts exhibited significant spatial cluster characteristics, while the drought intensity showed non-significant spatial clusters and a random distribution. The high and low values of drought intensity were mainly clustered in the middle–upper reaches. Much attention has recently been devoted to the qualitative relationship between climate factors and drought; however, the influences of climate variability, land-use/cover changes (LUCC), and other human activities on drought have rarely been quantitatively assessed. Based on the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model and the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI), this study presents a framework to quantify drought changes in an attribution study, and quantifies the effects of climate factors, LUCC, and other human activities on drought in a typical basin (Yihe River) in eastern China from 1980 to 2019. (1) The SWAT–PDSI results revealed a slight decreasing trend from 1980 to 2019, indicating that the degree of drought increased—especially in the middle of the basin. (2) The precipitation in the basin exhibited a downward trend (−2.7 mm/10 a), while the temperature exhibited a significant increasing trend (0.13 °C/10 a, p < 0.05). Over the past 40 years, LUCC in the Yihe River Basin was mainly characterized by a reduction in the dryland area (149 km2) and an increase in the built-up area (135 km2), which changed by −1.77% and 18.96%, respectively. (3) Climate fluctuation was the main driving factor of drought change, with a contribution rate ranging from 68 to 84%, and the contribution to drought gradually increased. Among the various factors, the contribution of temperature exceeded that of precipitation from 2010 to 2019, suggesting that temperature has become the most important climate factor affecting drought. The contribution rates of LUCC to drought changes over the periods 1990–1999, 2000–2009, and 2010–2019 were 7.8%, 18%, and 12.6%, respectively. This indicates that the relative contributions of other human activities to drought changes gradually decreased. This study refines the drought attribution framework, which could provide scientific support for the quantitative attribution of drought and the formulation of disaster prevention and reduction strategies. Droughts and heatwaves are the most detrimental climatic threats to global wheat production, their spatiotemporal coexistence (compound drought and heatwave events [CDHEs]) can cause synergistic and amplified impacts on wheat yield, which call for an improved understating of their characteristics and variations that related to wheat growth. Past decade has witnessed a surge in the study of CDHEs in terms of their causative mechanisms, variabilities and impacts; however, changes in CDHEs occurring within crops' growing seasons are barely discussed, especially on global scale. In this study, we proposed a novel approach to identify and summarize CDHEs by taking "crop growing season" as accumulated period, and investigated the spatiotemporal changes of CDHEs occurring within wheat growing seasons over global wheat‐producing areas during 1981–2020, including their spatial extent, frequency and duration. Results show that the spatial extent of CDHEs experienced rapid expansion during wheat growing seasons of 1981–2020, meanwhile, droughts and heatwaves increasingly tended to occur simultaneously. More than 92% of wheat‐producing areas experienced at least one CDHE in each wheat growing season, the frequency of CDHEs increased significantly in 28.2% of wheat‐producing areas, and the total duration of CDHEs increased significantly in 33.2% of wheat‐producing areas. Europe, eastern China, western US and northern Argentina are the hotspot regions with the biggest contradiction between fast‐increasing CDHEs and wheat production, pointing to the urgency of marking spatially targeted adaptation measures for disaster reduction and risk management. With rapid economic development and population growth, the impacts of drought continue to affect China and the situation will probably be worsened further under projected climate warming. Therefore, understanding the characteristics of drought conditions and its actual impacts is especially important for disaster prevention and mitigations, under climatic warming. Here, we investigated the spatiotemporal variations of drought, using the self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (scPDSI) based on two evaluation methods, i.e., scPDSITh (Thornthwaite method for calculating evapotranspiration) and scPDSIPM (Penman–Monteith method for calculating evapotranspiration). Results show the drought severities characterized by these two methods are highly consistent, except that the scPDSITh shows more drought severity than the scPDSIPM in some regions, e.g., Xinjiang, Tibet, Qinghai, and Inner Mongolia. Based on the scPDSIPM and drought disaster statistics, we adopted a downscaling approach to obtain the county level dataset of drought-affected area from the provincial level. Using this finer-scale dataset, we observed spatial agglomeration characteristics of drought-affected area during the study period, denoting by the Moran's I. Moreover, results show that the high-high clusters (high values surrounded by high values) of the drought-affected area are mainly distributed in northern China, and the moving direction of high-high clusters presents the East–West pattern. Combining the meteorological data and disaster statistics, this study can improve the accuracy of drought detection, which is important for disaster prevention and mitigations in China. Under the background of climate warming, drought events occur frequently. Generally, meteorological drought leads to agricultural drought. Understanding the spatiotemporal distribution, characteristics of drought and the relationship between meteorological and agricultural drought are important for early drought warning. Northeast China (NEC) was selected as the study area. The spatiotemporal characteristics of meteorological drought and agricultural drought in different seasons in NEC were analyzed. Correlation analysis was employed to analyze the relationship between meteorological and agricultural drought in different vegetation types. Furthermore, cross-wavelet analysis was employed to further analyze the relationship between meteorological drought and agricultural drought, explore the teleconnection and large-scale climate patterns and investigate possible causes of drought variations in this region. The results showed that (1) the frequency of mild meteorological drought and low and that of moderate agricultural drought was high; (2) there was a significant positive correlation between meteorological drought and agricultural drought, while the change in agricultural drought lagged behind that of meteorological drought. (3) A strong correlation between meteorological drought and agricultural drought was identified in cropland areas. (4) The El Niño Southern Oscillation and Pacific interannual oscillation were important factors affecting the changes in meteorological drought and agricultural drought NEC. The results provide scientific ground for the sustainable development of agriculture, drought monitoring and early warning, disaster prevention and mitigation in NEC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
