This article presents a four-year longitudinal study analysing what teachers who participate in a non-formal scientific activity think they will learn during the activity. Unlike previous studies, this paper is focused on a long-term activity. The answers given by the teachers to an open-ended question were subjected to an interpretative-descriptive analysis which allowed the emergence of five main categories of response and five teacher profiles. These categories and profiles allowed the characterization and interpretation of teachers' responses. It is concluded that the teachers perceive the activity as a multidisciplinary training opportunity with which to expand and diversify their formation and, especially, to acquire new teaching learning strategies that can be transferred to their classrooms. SCHOOL absenteeism , *SECONDARY education , *SECONDARY schools , *EDUCATION research , *URBAN schools - Abstract
This text presents some of the results of the PhD research in Educational Sciences (Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities, UNC) developed between 2018 and 2022, which sought to study school discontinuity through student absenteeism in two secondary schools in the city of Cordoba. The thesis is entitled "Discontinuities in school time in secondary education. An investigation on the presences and absences in the schooling of the new generations". In this paper I will focus on the normative regulations about absenteeism and non-attendance through the redefinition of the academic regime. I will focus on the two regulations that continue to intervene on absenteeism in the province of Cordoba, in order to problematise the typology of justified and unjustified absences. I then analyse the ways in which absences are regulated in the two schools investigated through reinstatements and justifications. Finally, this development allows us to reflect on the relationships between attendance, inequality and normative and pedagogical interventions on absenteeism in secondary education, recognising the achievements and pending challenges in the process of institutionalisation of compulsory schooling and democratisation of secondary education. The forms in which Environmental Education (EE) is included in the curriculum are a long-standing concern in the Latin American didactic field. In this paper we analyse the current curricular designs for the Basic Secondary School in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Although in hierarchically superior regulations (Provincial Education Law and General Framework of Curricular Policy), EE is based on critical and ethnographic perspectives, it has an uneven transversal presence in the curricular designs. Some subjects present an empty EE curriculum, while others show fragmentary and contradictory perspectives. Only in Social Sciences, Geography and Citizenship Building is there a critical and ethnographic vision, linked to contemporary environmental conflicts. From Geography we recovered the experiential dimension and the enjoyment of the environment as a contribution to the pedagogies of environmental conflict and to the ongoing implementation the new national EE regulations. From the Mathematical Didactics’ viewpoint about teaching Calculus, this paper aims to characterize the knowledge and mathematical work that emerges when high school students solve tasks about the rate of change mediated by GeoGebra. Based on the theory of Mathematical Working Spaces, we analyze the mathematical production of Chilean students (16- 17 years old) and conclude that making sense of the change rate starts from a work based on algorithmic processes and an interpretation/experimentation approach to the idea of variation and change emphasizing the role of the artefact, being particular to establish proof and demonstration processes. This paper offers a systematic review of quantitative and qualitative studies that examine school supervision and its effects on quality in education. The objective of this work is to take stock of the effects of supervision on basic-level (primary and lower secondary) schools and identify supervisory practices that help or hinder educational improvement, based on which a typology of supervisors was constructed according to their role and observed impact. The findings show that school supervision has the potential to achieve an impact in improving the quality of education, provided it is not associated with inspectional practices and a system of support is developed to make timely recommendations and provide pedagogical support in schools. This paper presents an up-to-date overview of how students in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) in Spanish public schools, aged between 11 and 16, approach the media, how they inform themselves, the degree of journalistic discrimination they have, and how they deal with the news in times of an infodemic and disinformation. In addition, it explores the opinion of teachers on the media deficits they perceive in their students. The main research technique used in this study was a descriptive, cross-sectional survey of 1,651 ESO students from all over Spain with a confidence level of <95% and a ±3% sampling error. In order to delve deeper into some of the main aspects pointed out by students, 77 in-depth interviews were conducted with teachers from all over Spain. The main results highlight that high school students are mainly informed through social networks, television, and their family or friendship groups; that they have difficulties in discriminating between information and opinion; and that, although they consider themselves capable of differentiating between news and hoaxes, more than half are unable to distinguish between fake and real news. According to the teachers in some of these schools, media consumption among students is non-critical, fuelled by the compulsive consumption of audiovisual and digital media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to study how the students of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) valued the reliability of the information contained in the Internet to carry out a task in a science class. To do this, 156 students from this educational stage, from 3rd and 4th of ESO, from four institutes in the municipality of Murcia took part in the study. We set them a task: they had to answer some questions about "acid rain" and they could use two web pages that the participants could independently select. Once the activity has been carried out, we ask them some questions about the pages used, the credibility of the content found and the reasons or criteria used to grant it such reliability. In addition, we study the dependence of the reliability with some social variables (age, gender, center) and the relationship between the reliability granted and the efficiency in the search for information. e results show contributions to better understand digital competence developed by the particpants. This paper presents an updated list of schools that report applying the Montessori method in Catalonia. To introduce the study, the paper recalls the historical background to the arrival and the development of the Montessori method in region, a process abruptly interrupted by the civil war. Method. After providing the historical context, the paper presents the results of an empirical survey that, based on different sources, identifies the Montessori schools in Catalonia and estimates the number of pupils who have studied there in recent years. Results. The survey identifies 22 Montessori schools, of which: a) five are affiliated to the AME (the Spanish Montessori Association); b) 13 that are not affiliated, but have Montessori-trained teachers and appear to have chosen an exclusively or predominantly Montessori education; and c) four that have opted for a Montessori education integrated with other educational approaches. Discussion. The study suggests the need to continue monitoring the development, quality and effectiveness of the application of the Montessori method in Catalonia, in order to promote an educational philosophy which underwent a significant development here and which, today, is experiencing a renewal., Introducción. An overview of the thinking that led us to write our most recent book, Piety and Privilege. Catholic Secondary Schooling in Ireland and the Theocratic State, 1922-67, constitutes the substance of this paper. Our central argument is that during the period 1922-1967, the Church, unhindered by the State, promoted within secondary schools, practices aimed at “the salvation of souls” and at the reproduction of a loyal middle class and clerics. The State supported that arrangement with the Church also acting on its behalf in aiming to produce a literate and numerate citizenry, in pursuing nation building, and in ensuring the preparation of an adequate number of secondary school graduates to address the needs of the public service and the professions. This situation proved attractive to successive governments, partly because the great majority of the nation’s politicians and public servants were themselves loyal middle-class Catholics. In addition, the teaching religious played a crucial role in the State’s project of harnessing schools as part of its Gaelic nation-building project. This paper considers what we deem to be three distinctive aspects of our work. First, we detail how it is a contribution not just to the history of education in Ireland but also to the broader field of the history of Catholic Church and State relations in education in the English-speaking world for the period examined. Secondly, we deliberate on the research approach we adopted in generating our exposition. Thirdly, we outline our consideration of three aspects of the process of education in Catholic schools that have been neglected in many accounts to date, namely, the manner in which privilege, piety, and sex education were approached., Cet article offre un aperçu de la réflexion qui nous a conduit à écrire notre dernier livre, Piety and Privilege. Catholic Secondary Schooling in Ireland and the Theocratic State, 1922–67. Catholic Secondary Schooling in Ireland and the Theocratic State, 1922-67.
