Biochar can be used for soil remediation in environmentally beneficial manner, especially when combined with nanomaterials. After a decade of research, still, no comprehensive review was conducted on the effectiveness of biochar-based nanocomposites in controlling heavy metal immobilization at soil interfaces. In this paper, the recent progress in immobilizing heavy metals using biochar-based nanocomposite materials were reviewed and compared their efficacy against that of biochar alone. In details, an overview of results on the immobilization of Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Cr, and As was presented by different nanocomposites made by various biochars derived from kenaf bar, green tea, residual bark, cornstalk, wheat straw, sawdust, palm fiber, and bagasse. Biochar nanocomposite was found to be most effective when combined with metallic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 and FeS) and carbonaceous nanomaterials (graphene oxide and chitosan). This study also devoted special consideration to different remediation mechanisms by which the nanomaterials affect the effectiveness of the immobilization process. The effects of nanocomposites on soil characteristics related to pollution migration, phytotoxicity, and soil microbial composition were assessed. Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs), as one of green and sustainable biological macromolecules, have attracted great attention owing to their promising potentials in many valorized fields. However, the lignin heterogeneity seriously restricts the controllable preparation of LNPs. Herein, a facile nanogrinding activation combining anhydrous ethanol dissolution process was developed to efficiently homogenize lignin prior to gradient ethanol fractionation. Two lignin fractions were obtained from nanogrinding activation/ethanol dissolution followed by gradient ethanol fractionation: L-fractions and S-fractions. Therefore, monodispersed LNPs with unique concave hollow nanostructure and large particle size, and monodispersed LNPs with solid core nanostructure and small particle size were successfully prepared from L-fractions and S-fractions, respectively, via a GVL/water anti-solvent method. The proposed LNPs formation mechanisms facilitated by nanogrinding activation/ethanol dissolution treatment were demonstrated. Cellulose nanomaterials have attracted much attention in recent years because of their unique properties. Commercial or semi-commercial production of nanocellulose has been reported in recent years. Mechanical treatments for nanocellulose production are viable but highly energy-intensive. Chemical processes are well reported; however, these chemical processes are not only costly, but also cause environmental concerns and end-use related challenges. This review summarizes recent researches on enzymatic treatment of cellulose fibers for the production of cellulose nanomaterials, with focus on novel enzymatic processes with xylanase and lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMO) to enhance the efficacy of cellulase. Different enzymes are discussed, including endoglucanase, exoglucanase and xylanase, as well as LPMO, with emphasis on the accessibility and hydrolytic specificity of LPMO enzymes to cellulose fiber structures. Despite significant advances in early detection and personalized treatment, cancer is still among the leading causes of death globally. One of the possible anticancer approaches that is presently receiving a lot of attention is the development of nanocarriers capable of specific and efficient delivery of anticancer drugs. Graphene-based materials are promising nanocarriers in this respect, due to their high drug loading capacity and biocompatibility. In this review, we present an overview on the interactions of graphene-based materials with normal mammalian cells at the molecular level as well as cellular and subcellular levels, including plasma membrane, cytoskeleton, and membrane-bound organelles such as lysosomes, mitochondria, nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, and peroxisome. In parallel, we assemble the knowledge about the interactions of graphene-based materials with cancerous cells, that are considered as the potential applications of these materials for cancer therapy including metastasis treatment, targeted drug delivery, and differentiation to non-cancer stem cells. We highlight the influence of key parameters, such as the size and surface chemistry of graphene-based materials that govern the efficiency of internalization and biocompatibility of these particles in vitro and in vivo. Lignin nanoparticles, the innovative achievements in the development and utilization of lignin, combine the structural characteristics of nanomaterials and lignin molecules and have a wide range of applications. In this review, we summarize the methods for preparing lignin nanoparticles by solvent exchange method, mechanical method, biological enzymatic method, interface polymerization/crosslinking method, and spray freezing method, and emphatically introduce the application prospects of lignin nanoparticles in ultraviolet protection, antibacterial, nano-filler, drug delivery, and adsorption, aiming to provide a certain reference direction for additional high-value applications of lignin nanoparticles.

Nanocellulose has great potential in the biomedical field due to its biocompatibility, large specific surface area, and customizable surface chemistry. However, due to the bioinert nature and mismatch of the mechanical strength, nanocellulose itself has no cell adhesion ability and cannot directly promote cell growth and reproduction. Recently, surface functionalization of nanocellulose has been reported as an indispensable strategy for improving its bioactivities or other physic-chemical properties. In this paper, functionalization strategies of nanocellulose based on its inherent hydroxyl, aldehyde, carboxyl, and sulfate group reactions are reviewed. Biomacromolecules, such as peptides, proteins, and DNA that are commonly used in functionalization for different biomedical applications are summarized. Prospects and ongoing challenges of nanocellulose-based biomaterials application, as well as these advanced processing technologies such as additive manufacturing, nanomanufacturing, and bio-manufacturing are also discussed. Thermal insulating fibers can effectively regulate the human body temperature and decrease indoor energy consumption. However, designing super thermal insulating fibers integrating a sponge and aerogel structure based on biomass resources is still a challenge. Herein, a flow-assisted dynamic dual-cross-linking strategy is developed to realize the steady fabrication of regenerated all-cellulose graded sponge-aerogel fibers (CGFs) in a microfluidic chip. The chemically cross-linked cellulose solution is used as the core flow, which is passed through two sheath flow channels, containing either a diffusion solvent or a physical cross-linking solvent, resulting in CGFs with a porous sponge outer layer and a dense aerogel inner layer. By regulating and simulating the flow process in the microfluidic chip, CGFs with adjustable sponge thicknesses, excellent toughness (26.20 MJ m -3 ), and ultralow thermal conductivity (0.023 W m -1 K -1 ) are fabricated. This work provides a new method for fabricating graded biomass fibers and inspires attractive applications for thermal insulation in textiles.

In recent years, smart-responsive nanocellulose composite hydrogels have attracted extensive attention due to their unique porous substrate, hydrophilic properties, biocompatibility and stimulus responsiveness. At present, the research on smart response nanocellulose composite hydrogel mainly focuses on the selection of composite materials and the construction of internal chemical bonds. The common composite materials and connection methods used for preparation of smart response nanocellulose composite hydrogels are compared according to the different types of response sources such as temperature, pH and so on. The response mechanisms and the application prospects of different response types of nanocellulose composite hydrogels are summarized, and the transformation of internal ions, functional groups and chemical bonds, as well as the changes in mechanical properties such as modulus and strength are discussed. The rapid development of consumer electronics, artificial intelligence, and clinical medicine generates an increasing demand for flexible pressure sensors, whose performance depends significantly on sensitive materials with high flexibility and proper conductivity. MXene, a type of 2D nanomaterial, has attracted extensive attention due to its good electrical conductivity, hydrophilicity, and flexibility. The synthesis methods for MXenes make it relatively easy to control their microstructure and surface termination groups. Hence, MXenes can obtain peculiar microstructures and facilely combine with other functional materials, making them promising prospects for use in flexible pressure sensors. In this Review, recent advances in MXenes are summarized, mainly focusing on the synthesis methods and their application in flexible pressure sensors. Finally, the challenges and potential solutions for future development are also discussed.

Gas sensors have aroused much attention in recent years for the important effect in modern society. Graphene, with unique structure and characteristic properties, has been considered as a promising candidate for fabricating high-performance gas sensor. Great efforts in current research are directed towards exploiting various graphene-based gas sensors, but the core of gas sensing study is how to enhance the gas sensing performance. Herein, we propose a perspective that focuses on the strategies for sensing performance enhancement of graphene-based gas sensors. Several strategies are reviewed such as the modification of graphene with organic molecules, functionalization by metal oxide or noble metals, and nanostructural engineering. Particular emphasis is also provided to clarify the mechanism for the gas sensing enhancement. Further, the sensor device design is also concerned for the significant effect on reaching full potential of the gas sensing materials and realizing multifunctional integration. A series of fluorescent nanocomplexes of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/Terbium (Tb)- Europium (Eu) were successfully synthesized without introducing a second ligand. By adjusting the concentration of the coordinated ions, these nanocomplexes exhibit favorably visibly tunable luminescence properties with colors being able to change from green to red. The XPS analysis demonstrates the formation Tb(III)-O 2- and Eu(III)-O 2- between OH and COO - in CMC and Tb 3+ or Eu 3+ ions, which is advantage for light absorption by UV-Vis spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The ligand CMC plays a role in coordinating with terbium and europium ions, but also serves as an energy donor to these metal ions by antenna effect. Moreover, the energy transfer also occurred from terbium ions to europium ions in CMC matrix, which is responsible for the tunable luminescence properties of these complexes., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Smart hydrogels responsive to minimally invasive near-infrared (NIR) light have great potential in localized drug delivery for cancer treatment, but they still show some limitations such as low photothermal conversion, poor photothermal stability, and improper temperature range in biomedical applications. In this paper, the two-dimensional MXene nanosheets with high photothermal conversion efficiency as well as photothermal stability was firstly prepared, then the MXene nanosheets and the therapeutic drug were embedded in the low-melting-point agarose hydrogel network to fabricate the drug-loaded MXene/agarose hydrogel (MXene@Hydrogel). With the addition of low concentration of MXene (20 ppm), the MXene@Hydrogel could quickly rise to 60 °C under NIR irradiation and melt to release the encapsulated drugs. Importantly, the drug on/off release and the kinetics could be easily controlled with varied agarose concentration, MXene concentration, light intensity, and exposure time. In addition, the drug doxorubicin retained the anticancer activity after released from the MXene@Hydrogel network under NIR irradiation. With the excellent biocompatibility, the newly fabricated NIR-responsive MXene@Hydrogel offers a novel way for the development of smart hydrogel-based drug delivery system for localized cancer treatment., (Copyright © 2021.
