Due to the constantly deteriorating environmental situation in the regions with mining enterprises, the article considers the topical issue of disposing the maximum possible volume of waste from the mining and processing of low-grade ferrous ores through the creation of an effective underground environmental geotechnology. Traditional procedure with descending mining of reserves with a caving system does not allow waste to be disposed of in a gob. The idea is to use geotechnology based on the ascending order of mining the ore body, room excavation, leaving truncated pillars, and staggered arrangement of adjacent rooms in height, which makes it possible to form containers for waste disposal in the form of a cementless backfill. The main characteristics of the proposed procedure are investigated and compared with the traditional procedure of low-grade iron ores mining. It was established that from the point of view of the complete extraction of reserves and the unit costs for the preparatory-development operations, the processes are comparable, while in terms of the mining quality, the proposed option is much more efficient. Evaluation of environmental geotechnology by the criterion of waste disposal, performed according to the proposed methodology, showed that the combination of these technical solutions ensures the placement in the formed gob from 80 to 140% of all waste generated during the mining and beneficiation of low-grade iron ores.

Species of flightless litter ground beetles of the tribe Anillini, genus Nesamblyops, from the North Island and from the north-eastern part of the South Island are revised. Eight new species are described and one previously known species, Nesamblyops oreobius (Broun), is re-described. Nesamblyops oreobius, the only hitherto recorded species from the North Island, is most similar to the group of two new species from the South Island, N. confusus n. sp. (type locality: New Zealand, Marlborough Sounds, Mount Stokes) and N. lescheni n. sp. (type locality: New Zealand, Marlborough Sounds, D’Urville Island), based on the structure of the male genitalia. The second species of the genus known from the North Island, N. tararua n. sp. (type locality: New Zealand, Wellington, Tararua Range) represents another lineage, based on the structure of the male genitalia, and is closely related to a group of three new species from the South Island, N. brouni n. sp. (type locality: New Zealand, Canterbury, Southern Alps, Lewis Pass), N. distinctus n. sp. (type locality: New Zealand, Marlborough, Richmond Range, Fabians Valley), and N. townsendi n. sp. (type locality: New Zealand, Marlborough Sounds, Tennyson Inlet). Nesamblyops carltoni n. sp. (type locality: New Zealand, Nelson, Richmond Range, Dun Mountain) and N. parvulus n. sp. (type locality: New Zealand, Marlborough Sounds, Mount Stokes), both from the South Island occupy an isolated position among the examined species. All species are illustrated with digital images of habitus, body parts, and drawings of genitalia. Distribution maps for all species are also provided. Geographical evidence of Nesamblyops dispersal to the North Island is discussed, based on distributional data.

Two new species of blind cavernicolous ground beetles in the genus Anillinus Casey are described from Texas. Based on the structure of the male genitalia, Anillinus reddellisp. nov. (type locality: SW Bypass Cave, Williamson County, Texas) is closely related to A. forthoodensis Sokolov and Reddell from the neighboring Bell County. Based on the structure of the male genitalia, Anillinus bexarensissp. nov. (type locality: Up the Creek Cave, Bexar County, Texas) is closely related to A. weismanensis Sokolov and Kavanaugh from Hays and Bell Counties. Both new species are illustrated with images of the habitus, body parts, and male and female genitalia. Based on morphological data a new grouping of the Texas species is proposed and discussed.

Sub-resonance tapping (SRT) mode of atomic force microscopy (AFM) enables researchers to image surfaces with well-controlled load forces and to collect maps of multiple physical properties of samples. The major bottleneck of this mode is a relatively low scan speed compared to other scanning modes. This paper presents a novel control algorithm that substantially improves the scanning speed over the standard SRT. We propose naming the new modality Trajectory Tracking SRT (TT-SRT). In contrast with the standard SRT control, TT-SRT uses the feedback within every single touch of the sample by the AFM probe. To demonstrate the advantage of TT-SRT, we conduct scans on a variety of samples with differing topologies, roughnesses, and mechanical properties. Each sample region is scanned with both standard SRT and TT-SRT at the same set of speeds. The control gains are tuned before each scan for maximum performance in each mode. Performance is evaluated by selecting a given level of image quality and finding the maximum speed that can be achieved by each algorithm. We find that with increased demand for data quality, the utility of TT-SRT becomes more apparent; for example, the speed of TT-SRT can be ten times faster or more than standard SRT for a reasonable expectation of data quality.

We provide exact analytical solutions for the magnetic field produced by prescribed current distributions located inside a toroidal filament of finite thickness. In application to the MHD equilibrium of a twisted toroidal current loop in the solar corona, the Grad-Shafranov equation is decomposed into an analytic solution describing an equilibrium configuration against the pinch-effect from its own current and an approximate solution for an external strapping field to balance the hoop force. Our solutions can be employed in numerical simulations of coronal mass ejections. When superimposed on the background solar coronal magnetic field, the excess magnetic energy of the twisted current loop configuration can be made unstable by applying flux cancellation to reduce the strapping field. Such loss of stability accompanied by the formation of an expanding flux rope is typical for the Titov-Dèmoulin eruptive event generator. The main new features of the proposed model are: i) The filament is filled with finite β plasma with finite mass and energy,ii) The model describes an equilibrium solution that will spontaneously erupt due to magnetic reconnection of the strapping magnetic field arcade, andiii) There are analytic expressions connecting the model parameters to the asymptotic velocity and total mass of the resulting CME, providing a way to connect the simulated CME properties to multipoint coronograph observations.

This paper presents the results of experimental studies of the interaction of helium plasma with a near-surface tungsten carbide layer. The experiments were implemented at the plasma-beam installation. The helium plasma loading conditions were close to those expected in the ITER divertor. The technology of the plasma irradiation was applied in a stationary type linear accelerator. The impact of the helium plasma was realized in the course of the experiment with the temperatures of ~905 °C and ~1750 °C, which were calculated by simulating heat loading on a tungsten monoblock of the ITER divertor under the plasma irradiation at the load of 10 MW/m2 and 20 MW/m2, respectively. The structure was investigated with scanning microscopy, transmitting electron microscopy and X-ray analysis. The data were obtained showing that the surface morphology changed due to the erosion. It was found that the carbidization extremely impacted the plasma–tungsten interaction, as the plasma–tungsten interaction with the carbide layer led to the carbon sputtering and partial diffusion towards to the depth of the sample. According to these results, WC-based tungsten carbide is less protected against fracture by helium than W and W2C. An increase in temperature leads to much more extensive surface damage accompanied by the formation of molten and recrystallized flanges.

Naked mole rats (NMRs) demonstrate exceptional longevity and resistance to cancer. Using a biochemical approach, it was previously shown that the treatment of mouse fibroblast cells with RasV12 oncogene and SV40 Large T antigen (viral oncoprotein) led to malignant transformations of cells. In contrast, NMR fibroblasts were resistant to malignant transformations upon this treatment. Here we demonstrate that atomic force microscopy (AFM) can provide information which is in agreement with the above finding, and further, adds unique information about the physical properties of cells that is impossible to obtain by other existing techniques. AFM indentation data were collected from individual cells and subsequently processed through the brush model to obtain information about the mechanics of the cell body (absolute values of the effective Young's moduli). Furthermore, information about the physical properties of the pericellular layer surrounding the cells was obtained. We found a statistically significant decrease in the rigidity of mouse cells after the treatment, whereas there was no significant change found in the rigidity of NMR cells upon the treatment. We also found that the treatment caused a substantial increase in a long part of the pericellular layer in NMR cells only (the long brush was defined as having a size of10 microns). The mouse cells and smaller brush did not show statistically significant changes upon treatment. The observed change in cell mechanics is in agreement with the frequently observed decrease in cell rigidity during progression towards cancer. The change in the pericellular layer due to the malignant transformation of fibroblast cells has practically not been studied, though it was shown that the removal of part of the pericellular layer of NMR fibroblasts made the cells susceptible to malignant transformation. Although it is plausible to speculate that the observed increase in the long part of the brush layer of NMR cells might help cells to resist malignant transformations, the significance of the observed change in the pericellular layer is yet to be understood. As of now, we can conclude that changes in cell mechanics might be used as an indication of the resistance of NMR cells to malignant transformations.

How do different reset protocols affect ergodicity of a diffusion process in single-particle-tracking experiments? We here address the problem of resetting of an arbitrary stochastic anomalous-diffusion process (ADP) from the general mathematical points of view and assess ergodicity of such reset ADPs for an arbitrary resetting protocol. The process of stochastic resetting describes the events of the instantaneous restart of a particle’s motion via randomly distributed returns to a preset initial position (or a set of those). The waiting times of such resetting events obey the Poissonian, Gamma, or more generic distributions with specified conditions regarding the existence of moments. Within these general approaches, we derive general analytical results and support them by computer simulations for the behavior of the reset mean-squared displacement (MSD), the new reset increment-MSD (iMSD), and the mean reset time-averaged MSD (TAMSD). For parental nonreset ADPs with the MSD(t)∝ tμ we find a generic behavior and a switch of the short-time growth of the reset iMSD and mean reset TAMSDs from ∝ _μ for subdiffusive to ∝ _1 for superdiffusive reset ADPs. The critical condition for a reset ADP that recovers its ergodicity is found to be more general than that for the nonequilibrium stationary state, where obviously the iMSD and the mean TAMSD are equal. The consideration of the new statistical quantifier, the iMSD—as compared to the standard MSD—restores the ergodicity of an arbitrary reset ADP in all situations when the μth moment of the waiting-time distribution of resetting events is finite. In this research, samples of an alloy with a bimodal structure were studied on the basis of a previously developed technology for obtaining hydrogen storage materials based on the Ti-Al-Nb system. The results of SPS of mechanically activated powder mixtures of the Ti-Al-Nb system at a temperature of 1300 °C make it possible to obtain an alloy with a predominantly bimodal structure. However, an insignificant presence of TiAl3, AlNb2 phases, and unreacted niobium is still observed in the structure. The mechanical properties of alloys of the Ti-Al-Nb system after sintering show abnormally low values of strength and ductility (less than 150 MPa). Two-stage heat treatment of alloys of the Ti-Al-Nb system leads to the decomposition of large precipitates of TiAl3 with the formation of O-phase nuclei, as well as to the complete dissolution of unreacted niobium and AlNb2 phases. Heat treatment of alloys of the Ti-Al-Nb system contributes to an increase in its strength by approximately 10 times (1310 MPa, MA-180), and ductility by 2 times (1322 MPa, MA-20). The surface fracture of samples obtained after testing is characterized by intergranular (intercrystalline) brittle fracture with “river” or “step” features.

We derive. the ensemble- and time-averaged mean-squared displacements (MSD, TAMSD) for Poisson-reset geometric Brownian motion (GBM), in agreement with simulations. We find MSD and TAMSD saturation for frequent resetting, quantify the spread of TAMSDs via the ergodicity-breaking parameter and compute distributions of prices. General MSD-TAMSD nonequivalence proves reset GBM nonergodic.

We explore model performance for the Alfvén Wave Solar atmosphere Model (AWSoM) with near-9 real-time (NRT) synoptic maps of the photospheric vector magnetic field. These maps, produced by 10 assimilating data from the Helioseismic Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Obser-11 vatory (SDO), use a different method developed at the National Solar Observatory (NSO) to provide 12 a near contemporaneous source of data to drive numerical models. Here, we apply these NSO-HMI-13 NRT maps to simulate three Carrington rotations (CRs): 2107-2108 (centered on 2011/03/07 20:12 14 CME event), 2123 (integer CR) and 2218-2219 (centered on 2019/07/2 solar eclipse), which together 15 cover a wide range of activity level for solar cycle 24. We show simulation results, which reproduce 16 both extreme ultraviolet emission (EUV) from the low corona while simultaneously matching in situ 17 observations at 1 au as well as quantify the total unsigned open magnetic flux from these maps. 18

This paper presents the research results of hydrogen plasma effect on the surface structure of the TGP-56 beryllium. In the linear simulator, the operating conditions of the first wall of ITER are simulated. Beryllium was irradiated with hydrogen plasma at surface temperatures of ~360 °C, ~800 °C, and ~1200 °C, depending on its location in the ITER chamber; with a different number of pulses with a duration of each pulse of 500 s. Samples of irradiated beryllium were subjected to a set of material studies. Experimental data were obtained on the change in the structure of the surface and edges of the beryllium samples after the plasma effect. It was found that at normal (2 MW/m2) and increased (4.7 MW/m2) heat fluxes on the first wall of the ITER, the edges and beryllium surface have good resistance to erosion. Under critical conditions close to the melting point, beryllium strongly erodes and evaporates. It has been established that this material has a high resource resistance to hydrogen plasma effect in the ITER under operating conditions.

We perform a series of time dependent Magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the HD 189733 star-planet system in order to predict radio transit modulations due to the interaction between the stellar wind and planetary magnetic field. The simulation combines a model for the stellar corona and wind with an exoplanet that is orbiting the star in a fully dynamic, time-dependent manner. Our simulations generate synthetic radio images that enable us to obtain synthetic radio lightcurves in different frequencies. We find a clear evidence for the planetary motion in the radio light curves. Moreover, we find specific repeated features in the light curves that are attributed to the passage of the planetary magnetosphere in front of the star during transit. More importantly, we find a clear dependence in the magnitude and phase of these lightcurve features on the strength of the planetary magnetic field. Our work demonstrates that if radio transits could be observed, they could indeed provide information about the magnetic field strength of the transiting exoplanet. Future work to parameterize these lightcurve features and their dependence on the planetary field strength would provide tools to search for these features in radio observations datasets. As we only consider the thermal radio emission from the host star for our study, very sensitive radio interferometers are necessary to detect these kinds of planetary transit in radio., 19 Pages, 10 Figures

Despite a long history and a clear overall understanding of properties of random walks on an incipient infinite cluster in percolation, some important information on it seems to be missing in the literature. In the present work, we revisit the problem by performing massive numerical simulations for (sub)diffusion of particles on such clusters. Thus, we discuss the shape of the probability density function (PDF) of particles' displacements, and the way it converges to its long-time limiting scaling form. Moreover, we discuss the properties of the mean squared displacement (MSD) of a particle diffusing on the infinite cluster at criticality. This one is known not to be self-averaging. We show that the fluctuations of the MSD in different realizations of the cluster are universal, and discuss the properties of the distribution of these fluctuations. These strong fluctuations coexist with the ergodicity of subdiffusive behavior in the time domain. The dependence of the relative strength of fluctuations in time-averaged MSD on the total trajectory length (total simulation time) is characteristic for diffusion in a percolation system and can be used as an additional test to distinguish this process with disorder-induced memory from processes with otherwise similar behavior, like fractional Brownian motion with the same value of the Hurst exponent., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures
