The spontaneous combustion of hay when stacked after baling is an issue frequently encountered by farmers in Australia and elsewhere. While there is a basic understanding of why this occurs the interactions of the many factors involved mean that there is still no consistent methodology for its prevention. Recent technological advances in sensors and communications allow for the continual collection of quantitative data from hay bales or stacks for managers to utilize in their decision-making processes with regards to minimizing the risks of spontaneous combustion. This review discusses both the factors involved in the spontaneous combustion of haystacks and the types of sensors available for the monitoring of these factors. Simple Summary: Threat conditioning is a process by which animals learn about danger. As such, this process has been extensively studied as a model of how humans develop fears and anxiety, and their related disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which affects seven to eight percent of adults at some point in their life. Conversely, threat extinction is essentially the reverse of this process, by which animals adaptively learn that something is no longer dangerous. Threat extinction forms the basis of exposure therapy, a cornerstone in the treatment of such disorders, during which patients face their fears in order to overcome them. So-called higher-order forms of learning such as second-order threat conditioning add layers of complexity to threat conditioning and may thus more closely mimic processes underlying the development of such disorders. While the amygdala has long been thought to be at the center of such processes, being activated and suppressed during threat conditioning and extinction, respectively, in reality a complex network of structures governs these forms of learning. While such networks are not proposed to hold all the answers to our understanding of the development and treatment of such disorders, they are an important piece of the puzzle, and are thus reviewed here. Recent advances are presenting new areas of exploration into the brain-based mechanisms of such forms of learning and may ultimately inform the treatment of fear- and anxiety-related disorders. Threat conditioning, extinction, and second-order threat conditioning studied in animal models provide insight into the brain-based mechanisms of fear- and anxiety-related disorders and their treatment. Much attention has been paid to the role of the basolateral amygdala (BLA) in such processes, an overview of which is presented in this review. More recent evidence suggests that the BLA serves as the core of a greater network of structures in these forms of learning, including associative and sensory cortices. The BLA is importantly regulated by hippocampal and prefrontal inputs, as well as by the catecholaminergic neuromodulators, norepinephrine and dopamine, that may provide important prediction-error or learning signals for these forms of learning. The sensory cortices may be required for the long-term storage of threat memories. As such, future research may further investigate the potential of the sensory cortices for the long-term storage of extinction and second-order conditioning memories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thromboembolic (TE) risk scores used for atrial fibrillation (AF) patients do not include mitral annular calcification (MAC) as a potential indicator of vascular disease. This research evaluated the correlation between MAC and TE risk scores (CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc). We compared TE risk score values and clinical and echocardiographic data in patients with and without MAC. We included, prospectively, 103 patients: 40.8% with AF, 83.5% with hypertension, 30.1% with type II diabetes mellitus, 79.6% with chronic heart failure, and 7.8% with a history of stroke. We identified MAC in 50.5% of patients. The mean CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores were 2.56 ± 1.135 and 4.57 ± 1.61, respectively. In MAC patients, both scores tended to increase significantly compared with the control (2.88 ± 1.114 versus 2.24 ± 1.06, p = 0.005, and 5.21 ± 1.51 versus 3.92 ± 1.46, p < 0.001, respectively). The left ventricular ejection fraction negatively correlated with the presence of MAC (r = −0.254, p = 0.01). The presence of MAC was a risk factor for vascular disease (OR = 2.47, χ2 = 34.32, p < 0001). Conclusions: The presence of MAC is associated with greater TE risk scores and a higher risk of vascular disease. It appears that adding MAC as a vascular disease parameter to TE risk scores may have benefits for patients by improving their predictive value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When we talk about visualization methods in surgery, it is important to mention that the diagnosis of tumors and how we define tumor borders intraoperatively in a correct way are two main things that would not be possible to achieve without this grand variety of visualization methods we have at our disposal nowadays. In addition, histopathology also plays a very important role, and its importance cannot be neglected either. Some biopsy specimens, e.g., frozen sections, are examined by a histopathologist and lead to tumor diagnosis and the definition of its borders. Furthermore, surgical resection is a very important point when it comes to prognosis and life survival. Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) is an imaging technique that provides microscopic information on the tissue in real time. CLE of disorders, such as head, neck and brain tumors, has only recently been suggested to contribute to both immediate tumor characterization and detection. It can be used as an additional tool for surgical biopsies during biopsy or surgical procedures and for inspection of resection margins during surgery. In this review, we analyze the development, implementation, advantages and disadvantages as well as the future directions of this technique in neurosurgical and otorhinolaryngological disciplines. Aesthetics of natural landscapes and the conservation of forest ecological integrity have received much attention because of the increasing public demand for aesthetic quality and the shift of forest conservation management objectives from single elements to multiple ecosystem services. However, existing research has not adequately addressed the relationship between forest scenic beauty with the color index and ecological integrity. This study aimed to evaluate and quantify the scenic beauty of forests and the vegetation color index using web questionnaires and Python color interpretation, with Jiuzhaigou World Natural Heritage and Giant Panda National Park in western Sichuan, China, as examples. The relationships between forest scenic beauty with vegetation color and ecological integrity were explored via correlation and linear regression analyses, respectively. The results showed that: (1) The overall scenic beauty of the autumn forests in the study area was at a "medium" level; (2) the scenic beauty of the autumn forest was significantly positively correlated with the saturation and value ratio; and (3) the scenic beauty was not significantly negatively correlated with ecological integrity. This research provides an important reference for the renovation of autumn foliage forests and ecotourism planning. This study also provides a theoretical basis for the transformation of forest conservation management objectives, offering the possibility for nature reserves to achieve the "win-win" management goal of ecological protection and local economic development. Studies were undertaken to determine the impact of environmental variables temperature (12.5/9.5, 20/17, 27/24 °C day/night) and soil moisture (100, 50% WHC), and their interaction with Phoma medicaginis infection, on production of the phytoestrogen coumestrol in annual Medicago rugosa cv. Paraponto and M. scutellata cv. Sava. Disease factors measured included leaf disease incidence/severity, petiole/stem disease incidence/severity, and leaf yellowing severity. Coumestrol levels were determined using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Increasing temperature from 12.5/9.5 °C to 27/24 °C in inoculated plants significantly (p < 0.05) increased coumestrol from 193 mg kg−1 to 390 mg kg−1, but there were no differences in coumestrol production across all three temperatures in uninoculated plants. Reducing soil moisture from 100% to 50% WHC at the highest temperature (27/24 °C) caused the greatest increase in coumestrol production from 156 to 269 mg kg−1 in inoculated plants. The greatest coumestrol production (600 mg kg−1) was under 27/24 °C/50% WHC for Sava infected with P. medicaginis and least coumestrol (1.6 mg kg−1) was Sava under 20/17 °C/50% WHC in the absence of P. medicaginis. Clearly, situations of higher temperatures in conjunction with lower soil moisture levels cause greatest elevation in coumestrol in the presence of P. medicaginis, levels far exceeding the animal risk threshold of 25 mg kg−1. Phoma black stem and leaf spot disease (caused by Phoma medicaginis) not only diminishes forage and seed yield but stimulates production of detrimental phytoestrogens in annual Medicago spp. This study aimed to evaluate relationships between disease development from five isolates of P. medicaginis on 16 cultivars with production of coumestrol and 4′‐O‐methylcoumestrol. In the presence of P. medicaginis, Sava had the highest coumestrol and 4′‐O‐methylcoumestrol (640 and 85 mg/kg, respectively) followed by Caliph (253 and 15 mg/kg, respectively). In the absence of P. medicaginis, Jemalong and Paragosa showed highest and lowest coumestrol (137 and 0 mg/kg, respectively). 4′‐O‐methylcoumestrol was not produced in disease‐free plants, but coumestrol was. Disease incidence and severity on leaves and on petiole/stems, and consequent leaf yellowing severity ranged from 5%–98.7%, 0%–100%, 4.4%–98.7%, 1.7%–100%, and 0%–85%. Sava, Paraponto, Harbinger, and Serena were most susceptible, while Tornafield and Caliph were least susceptible. There was significant overall positive correlation of disease incidence/severity factors across cultivars (p < 0.01) with both coumestrol and 4′‐O‐methylcoumestrol. Jemalong was least responsive and Paragosa and Sava most responsive to coumestrol production following P. medicaginis inoculation. Coumestrol in inoculated Paragosa increased to 373 mg/kg in comparison with 0 mg/kg in controls. These findings are of critical importance towards developing less disease‐susceptible annual Medicago spp. producing less detrimental phytoestrogens. Least susceptible cultivars like Tornafield and Caliph can be used to manage yield loss, whilst least responsive cultivars to phytoestrogen production like Caliph also can help to reduce phytoestrogen production.
