In diesem Beitrag setzen sich Simon J. A. Mason und Olivia Lazard mit den Querverbindungen zwischen der Friedensmediation und dem Klimaschutz auseinander. Das Bulletin 2022 befasst sich erneut mit aktuellen Themen der schweizerischen Aussen- und Sicherheitspolitik. Es wird eröffnet durch ein Interview mit Bundespräsident und Vorsteher des Eidgenössischen Departements für auswärtige Angelegenheiten (EDA), Ignazio Cassis. In den darauffolgenden fünf Beiträgen beschäftigen sich unsere Autoren mit Militärischer Drohnennutzung (Constant Despont, Dominika Kunertova und Niklas Masuhr), der sicherheits- und verteidigungspolitischen Zusammenarbeit der Schweiz im Schatten des Ukraine-Krieges (Amos Dossi und Sophie-Charlotte Fischer), Prioritäten der Schweizer UNO-Sicherheitsrats-Mitgliedschaft (Fabien Merz), den Querverbindungen zwischen der Friedensmediation und dem Klimaschutz (Simon J. In numerous intra-state conflicts, societies are polarized along worldview divides and conflicting parties disagree over what kind of society and state they want to build. Such questions can deeply divide societies and entrench intra-state wars by blocking political processes and mediation efforts. This paper suggests a method for addressing such blockages, one which is based on an understanding of the principal challenges that can arise from worldview differences in conflicts and conflict transformation. In order to deal with these challenges, we propose a model of engagement that we call the “mediation space” approach. Mediation space is defined as a process of exchange convened by a mediation team who bring together people across different worldviews in order to coordinate their actions and to agree on ways for practically addressing specific aspects of an ongoing conflict., In vielen innerstaatlichen Konflikten sind die jeweiligen Gemeinschaften entlang weltanschaulicher Trennlinien stark polarisiert und haben unterschiedliche Ansichten über welche Art von Gesellschaft und Staat aufgebaut werden soll. In diesem Beitrag betrachten Alexander Hug und Simon J. A. Mason die Rolle von Technologie bei der Beobachtung von Waffenstillständen. Die Erkenntnisse aus dem Kapitel basieren auf den Erfahrungen der 2014 begonnenen und nach dem russischen Angriff auf die Ukraine im April 2022 beendeten Beobachtermission der OSZE in der Ukraine. Die Mission setzte Technologien wie Drohnen, Satellitenbilder und Sensoren ein und erhöhte und ergänzte so die Reichweite und Effizienz menschlicher Beobachterinnen und Beobachter. Technologie hat damit zur Beobachtung und Verifikation eines Waffenstillstands in Europas akutestem Konflikt beigetragen. A. Mason consider the role of technology in monitoring ceasefires. The findings of the chapter are based on the experiences of the OSCE observer mission in Ukraine, which began in 2014 and ended after the Russian attack on Ukraine in April 2022. The mission used technologies such as drones, satellite imagery and sensors, increasing and complementing the range and efficiency of human observers. Technology has thus contributed to the observation and verification of a ceasefire in Europe's most acute conflict. According to the authors, however, it must not be used in isolation, it involves risks and its embedding requires suitable structures and resources. he oomycete pathogen Aphanomyces astaci, also known as "crayfish plague", is an obligate fungal-like parasite of freshwater crustaceans and is considered responsible for the ongoing decline of native European crayfish populations. A. astaci is thought to secrete a wide array of effectors and enzymes that facilitate infection, however their molecular mechanisms have been poorly characterized. Here, we report the identification of AA15 lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) as a new group of secreted virulence factors in A. astaci. We show that this enzyme family has greatly expanded in A. astaci compared to all other oomycetes, and that it may facilitate infection through oxidative degradation of crystalline chitin, the most abundant polysaccharide found in the crustacean exoskeleton. These findings reveal new roles for LPMOs in animal-pathogen interactions, and could help inform future strategies for the protection of farmed and endangered species.

Background Shipworms are marine xylophagus bivalve molluscs, which can live on a diet solely of wood due to their ability to produce plant cell wall-degrading enzymes. Bacterial carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes), synthesised by endosymbionts living in specialised shipworm cells called bacteriocytes and located in the animal’s gills, play an important role in wood digestion in shipworms. However, the main site of lignocellulose digestion within these wood-boring molluscs, which contains both endogenous lignocellulolytic enzymes and prokaryotic enzymes, is the caecum, and the mechanism by which bacterial enzymes reach the distant caecum lumen has remained so far mysterious. Here, we provide a characterisation of the path through which bacterial CAZymes produced in the gills of the shipworm Lyrodus pedicellatus reach the distant caecum to contribute to the digestion of wood. Results Through a combination of transcriptomics, proteomics, X-ray microtomography, electron microscopy studies and in vitro biochemical characterisation, we show that wood-digesting enzymes produced by symbiotic bacteria are localised not only in the gills, but also in the lumen of the food groove, a stream of mucus secreted by gill cells that carries food particles trapped by filter feeding to the mouth. Bacterial CAZymes are also present in the crystalline style and in the caecum of their shipworm host, suggesting a unique pathway by which enzymes involved in a symbiotic interaction are transported to their site of action. Finally, we characterise in vitro four new bacterial glycosyl hydrolases and a lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase identified in our transcriptomic and proteomic analyses as some of the major bacterial enzymes involved in this unusual biological system. Conclusion Based on our data, we propose that bacteria and their enzymes are transported from the gills along the food groove to the shipworm’s mouth and digestive tract, where they aid in wood digestion.

For a long time, peacebuilding has focused on international actors building social cohesion in mostly non-Western countries following violent conflict, rather than thinking about problems at home. Yet structural inequalities exist throughout the world and conflicts are one result of this. This study by Katrina Abatis turns the spotlight onto the United Kingdom where growing polarization threatens to undermine past social integration strategies and the population increasingly questions established institutions. Societies across the world are becoming more polarized and divisive politics feeds on people’s underlying fears.
