The quantum Zeno effect asserts that quantum measurements inhibit simultaneous unitary dynamics when the “collapse” events are sufficiently strong and frequent. This applies in the limit of strong continuous measurement or dissipation. It is possible to implement a dissipative control that is known as “Zeno dragging” by dynamically varying the monitored observable, and hence also the eigenstates, which are attractors under Zeno dynamics. This is similar to adiabatic processes, in that the Zeno-dragging fidelity is highest when the rate of eigenstate change is slow compared to the measurement rate. We demonstrate here two theoretical methods for using such dynamics to achieve control of quantum systems. The first, which we shall refer to as “shortcut to Zeno,” is analogous to the shortcuts to adiabaticity (counterdiabatic driving) that are frequently used to accelerate unitary adiabatic evolution. In the second approach, we apply the Chantasri-Dressel-Jordan stochastic action [PRA 88, 042110 (2013)], and demonstrate that the extremal-probability readout paths derived from this are well suited to setting up a Pontryagin-style optimization of the Zeno-dragging schedule. A fundamental contribution of the latter approach is to show that an action suitable for measurement-driven control optimization can be derived quite generally from statistical arguments. Implementing these methods on the Zeno dragging of a qubit, we find that both approaches yield the same solution, namely, that the optimal control is a unitary that matches the motion of the Zeno-monitored eigenstate. We then show that such a solution can be more robust than a unitary-only operation and we comment on solvable generalizations of our qubit example embedded in larger systems. These methods open up new pathways toward systematically developing dynamic control of Zeno subspaces to realize dissipatively stabilized quantum operations. Metasurfaces, composed of artificial meta-atoms of subwavelength size, can support strong light-matter interaction based on multipolar resonances and plasmonics, hence offering the great capability of empowering nonlinear generation. Recently, owing to their ability to manipulate the amplitude and phase of the nonlinear emission in the subwavelength scale, metasurfaces have been recognized as ultra-compact, flat optical components for a vast range of applications, including nonlinear imaging, quantum light sources, and ultrasensitive sensing. This review focuses on the recent progress on nonlinear metasurfaces for those applications. The principles and advances of metasurfaces-based techniques for image generation, including image encoding, holography, and metalens, are investigated and presented. Additionally, the overview and development of spontaneous photon pair generation from metasurfaces are demonstrated and discussed, focusing on the aspects of photon pair generation rate and entanglement of photon pairs. The recent blossoming of the nonlinear metasurfaces field has triggered growing interest to explore its ability to efficiently up-convert infrared images of arbitrary objects to visible images and achieve spontaneous parametric down-conversion. This recently emerged direction holds promising potential for the next-generation technology in night-vision, quantum computing, and biosensing fields.

Urged by the necessity to establish sustainable supply chains (SCs), this study focuses on exploring the closed-loop inventory routing problem (CIRP) for perishable food packed by multi-type returnable transport items (RTIs). The selling revenue of perishable food is dependent on food's remaining shelf life and the specific type of RTIs used for packaging. RTI selection decisions need to be jointly considered in the CIRP to weigh the potential benefits against associated costs. For this problem, we first develop an integer linear programme (ILP) to maximise the total profit of the holistic SC. Subsequently, we design a tailored kernel search (KS) matheuristic as an efficient solution. A real CIRP with multi-type RTIs for fresh strawberries is used to demonstrate the practicality of the ILP. For this case study, we perform extensive sensitivity analysis of the relevant parameters, extracting valuable managerial insights. Finally, experiments are conducted on 170 randomly generated instances. Computational results show that the proposed KS manages to achieve competitive solutions for instances with up to 10 retailers much more efficiently than CLPEX. For instances with up to 40 retailers, the KS algorithm significantly outperforms CPLEX in terms of solution quality, improving the obtained profit by 80.03% on average under the same computational time. An edge e of a matching covered graph G is removable if G−e is also matching covered. The notion of removable edge arises in connection with ear decompositions of matching covered graphs introduced by Lovász and Plummer. A nonbipartite matching covered graph G is a brick if it is free of nontrivial tight cuts. Carvalho, Lucchesi and Murty proved that every brick other than K4 and C6¯ has at least Δ−2 removable edges. A brick G is near‐bipartite if it has a pair of edges {e1,e2} such that G−{e1,e2} is a bipartite matching covered graph. In this paper, we show that in a near‐bipartite brick G with at least six vertices, every vertex of G, except at most six vertices of degree three contained in two disjoint triangles, is incident with at most two nonremovable edges; consequently, G has at least |V(G)|−62 removable edges. This article studies the speed-scaling robotic cell scheduling problem with constrained peak power consumption. The objective is to minimize cycle time and peak power consumption simultaneously. First, we formulate a bi-objective mixed integer programming model for the problem and propose a strategy to preprocess overlapping time windows. Then, we analyze the structural properties of the proposed model and develop an iterative $ \varepsilon $-constraint method to generate its complete Pareto front. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method effectively solves the robotic cell scheduling problem and that appropriate scheduling of speed-scaling machines can make a trade-off between productivity and power consumption. Inhalation exposures to nanoparticles (NPs) from printers and photocopiers have been associated with upper airway and systemic inflammation, increased blood pressure, and cases of autoimmune and respiratory disorders. In this study we investigate oxidative stress induced by exposures to copier-emitted nanoparticles using a panel of urinary oxidative stress (OS) biomarkers representing DNA damage (8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, 8-OHdG; 8-hydroxyguanosine, 8-OHG; 5-hydroxymethyl uracil 5-OHMeU), lipid peroxidation (8-isoprostane; 4-hydroxynonenal, HNE), and protein oxidation biomarkers (o-tyrosine, 3-chlorotyrosine, and 3-nitrotyrosine) under conditions of acute (single 6 h exposure, 9 volunteers, 110 urine samples) and chronic exposures (6 workers, 11 controls, 81 urine samples). Urinary biomarkers were quantified with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry after solid phase extraction sample cleanup. 8-OHdG, 8-OHG, 8-isoprostane, and HNE were significantly elevated in both the acute and chronic exposure study participants relative to the controls. In the acute exposure study, the geometric mean ratios post-/pre-exposure were 1.42, 1.10, 2.0, and 2.25, respectively. Urinary 8-OHG and HNE increased with time to at least 36 h post-exposure (post-/pre-exposure GM ratios increased to 3.94 and 2.33, respectively), suggesting slower generation and/or urinary excretion kinetics for these biomarkers. In chronically exposed operators, the GM ratios of urinary biomarkers relative to controls ranged from 1.52 to 2.94, depending on the biomarker. O-Tyrosine and 5-OHMeU biomarkers were not significantly different from the controls. 3-chlorotyrosine and 3-nitrotyrosine were not detected in the urine samples. We conclude that NPs from photocopiers induce systemic oxidative stress by damaging DNA, RNA, and lipids. Urinary levels of 8-OHdG, 8-OHG, HNE, and 8-isoprostane were orders of magnitude higher than in nanocomposite processing workers, comparable to nano titanium dioxide and fiberglass manufacturing workers, but much lower than in shipyard welding and carbon nanotube synthesis workers. Biomarkers 8-OHdG, 8-OHG, 8-isoprostane, and HNE appear to be more sensitive and robust urinary biomarkers for monitoring oxidative stress to NPs from photocopiers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early detection of breast cancer can significantly improve patient outcomes and five-year survival in clinical screening. Dynamic optical breast imaging (DOBI) technology reflects the blood oxygen metabolism level of tumors based on the theory of tumor neovascularization, which offers a technical possibility for early detection of breast cancer. In this paper, we propose an intelligent scoring system integrating DOBI features assessment and a malignancy score grading reporting system for early detection of breast cancer. Specifically, we build six intelligent feature definition models to depict characteristics of regions of interest (ROIs) from location, space, time and context separately. Similar to the breast imaging-reporting and data system (BI-RADS), we conclude the malignancy score grading reporting system to score and evaluate ROIs as follows: Malignant (≥ 80 score), Likely Malignant (60-80 score), Intermediate (35-60 score), Likely Benign (10-35 score), and Benign (<10 score). This system eliminates the influence of subjective physician judgments on the assessment of the malignant probability of ROIs.
