- Abstract
The paper deals with the names of current Czech railway stations and stops. From the List of Stations and Stops, which is part of the currently valid Czech Timetable 2024, all stations and stops located on the territory of the Czech Republic were excerpted. In these names, six parts were identified: the base of the municipality name (Veselí), specifying prepositional phrase (nad Moravou 'upon the (river) Morava'), a hyphen or a space, separating the base and the prepositional phrase from the so-called distinctive part (-Milokošť), which consists of a primary distinction that can be complemented by the specifying prepositional phrase (Pardubice-Rosice nad Labem) and possibly also by a secondary distinction (Praha-Holešovice zastávka). Not all names necessarily consist of all parts; a name can consist just of the base or of the base and a specifying prepositional phrase. The paper deals with the length of these names measured by the number of characters (including spaces) in all these parts, in base + specifying prepositional phrase, distinctive part and in the complete names. Individual sections on the whole names and on each of their parts consequently present the average number of characters and the lowest and highest number of characters. Besides purely descriptive purposes, the data also have a practical, applied purpose. They can serve as a basis for typographical standardization of the currently inconsistent presentation of names on signs and in information systems at stations and stops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The study summarizes mistakes or inaccuracies in the dating of some legal regulations regarding surnames in the territory of today’s Czech Republic. These are the regulations on the immutability of surnames (1770), on the inheritance of surnames (1786) and on the binding form of surnames (1886). In the specialist onomastic literature, we can come across other dates which are, however, incorrect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study introduces OnomOs, a new corpus of Czech texts with annotation of proper names. The corpus was compiled by onomasticians from the Department of Czech Language, Faculty of Arts, University of Ostrava, and made available by the Institute of the Czech National Corpus, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague. The paper briefly discusses the content and structure of the cor- pus, the selection of texts for inclusion, and the onomastic-geographical classification of the iden- tified names. The text consists chiefly of three preparatory analyses, which focus on the most fre- quent surnames, collocations found in Western and Eastern countries in the pre-1989 period, and the declension patterns of three types of onyms. In the summary, further possibilities of onomastic corpus research are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PERSONAL names ,NEW words ,ETYMOLOGY ,MINERALS ,VOCABULARY - Abstract
The article deals with nomenclatural names of minerals based on proper names of the persons associated with the Czech environment, and provides their etymologies. The names form part of the official mineralogical nomenclature and have been approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association, i.e. the authority recognizing the existence of new minerals. In the nomenclature consisting of 5,975 items (as of October 2023), 88 names based on anthroponyms have been identified, formed usually from last names, first names or their combination. These words are neologisms known to a limited number of experts, but they nevertheless rank among full-fledged words of the Czech vocabulary that is closely connected to the history of Czech science. COLLOCATION (Linguistics) ,GEOGRAPHIC names ,QUANTITATIVE research ,PERSONAL names ,TWENTY-first century - Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present the potential of quantitative methods for the research of proper names (mostly personal and place names) as units operating in Czech texts. Three case studies treat particular research topics on the background of the development of Czech onomastics in the 20th century and in the first decades of the 21st century. They are aimed at 1) quantification of relational (semantic) patterns; 2) collocation analysis; 3) morphological categories of proper names. The text also provides an overview of previous attempts to apply quantitative and corpus approaches to proper name research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
One of the reasons for choosing cat names tends to be a specific letter with which the name should begin. Although this is mainly the case for cats born in kennels, the choice of the initial letter of the cat's name may also have been influenced by other factors (e.g. matching the name to that of the mother, sibling, other family pet, or owner). This article focuses on cat names that begin with the first letter of the Latvian alphabet. The material under review comes from the responses to a questionnaire created by the author and posted on Facebook at the end of 2020. Of all the cat names in the survey, approximately 2.3%, or 454 cat names, begin with A and 237 are different from each other. The three most popular cat names with the initial letter A are Ance (33), Ansis (21) and Alise (13). In addition to changing cat names (Avena > Avenīte, Alpiņš > Alpina), some shortened forms may be used in everyday communication, often resembling hypocoristics or nicknames (Arčibalds > Arčijs, Adrija > Ada). Although it is not possible to divide all cat names into strict semantic groups, and this article discusses trends in the choice of cat names without giving a percentage breakdown of each semantic group, it is clear that the reasons for choosing cat names are varied, for example, the name-giver's perception of how the name sounds (Amūrs, Aza), the cat's appearance (Asaka, Astī), behaviour (Atspere, Ašais), time (Amors, Augusts) or place (Avene) of birth or finding, desire for an unusual name (Alisters, Alfijs) or Latvian name (Ansis, Ance), the name-giver's interests, hobbies, occupations (Aksis, Akords), name matching (Punktiņa and Antons), attempt of humour (Amālija Pūderslotiņa) and so on. However, it is important that the survey responses allow us to look at cat names from a socio-onomastic perspective, as the information provided by respondents demonstrates that the motivations for the same word can be quite different. The article gives an insight into the interesting world of cat names and can also be a source for choosing and making new cat names. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article analyses the influence of Vladimír Šmilauer on the character of the Journal of Modern Philology (Časopis pro moderní filologii, ČMF). Šmilauer was associated with the Journal for Modern Philology as an author and an editor for Slavic studies (1939-1951). The article describes the main linguistic/philological topics contributed to the magazine by Šmilauer (Slovak studies and the history of the Slovak language, new Czech, e.g. orthography, reports on foreign literature, etc.). The period of Šmilauer's work at the ČMF falls into a time of socially problematical political systems: the Nazi protectorate after 1939 and the communist terror after 1948. On the example of the case of Šmilauer, we will show how and when political systems were directly reflected in the philological content of the Journal for Modern Philology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This study is focused on changes in linguistic landscape (especially in urbanonyms) due to the Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022. It follows official and unofficial renaming of streets around the world in effort to show solidarity with Ukraine and its people. Official commemorative names have often the meaning ‘Free Ukraine’ (e.g. in Riga and Tirana), ‘Ukrainian Heroes’ (e.g. in Prague and Vilnius) etc. and are mostly located close to Russian embassies. Unofficial names given to streets by activists as a protest against the war are usually motivated by the name of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Street names derived from the adjective Russian, or from Russian toponyms are changed as well, however only unofficially (e.g. the sign with the name of Ruská ‘Russian Street’ in Prague was replaced with the sign containing the famous answer of the Ukrainian soldiers from Snake Island to the Russian warship).

- Abstract
Between 2006 and 2021, 231 babies were anonymously abandoned by their parents in the so-called baby hatches or baby boxes placed around the Czech Republic. First names and surnames are given to these children by nurses in hospitals or mostly by Ludvík Hess, the founder and organizer of the project of baby boxes in the Czech Republic. First names are chosen after nurses or doctors in hospitals, sponsors of the project, and Hess's friends. Sometimes the waifs are given the name corresponding to the respective name-day in the Czech calendar. Assigned surnames are motivated by the time (day, holiday, season) when, or the place (toponym) where, the child was found. However, these names are informal and temporary. The official first name and surname of the child must be decided by a court. Names can then be changed again after adoption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The article provides an analysis of cat names or felinonyms, where these cat names are derived from a name of an animal species. From the data set of 19,592 felinonyms, these are approximately 5.4%. 92 names of animal species appear within cat names. In the majority of cases, these felinonyms are derived from the lexeme 'kaķis' (cat), but the other 26 names of animal species are given once in each case. The article aims to find out the motivations behind the will to derive the cat's name from a name of an animal species. Respondents have answered the question: Why have you chosen this particular name for your cat? Even though the motivations for the choice could be various, there is no doubt that it is the closeness of Latvians to nature that counts. The dominant motivation to choose the name of an animal species for a cat is its physical resemblance to the species in question. The second most popular motivation for this group of felinonyms is linked to the behaviour of the cat; moreover, in some cases, both the physical appearance and the behavior are said to motivate the choice of the name. Other factors that have influenced the choice of the felinonyms are the compliance of the name, euphony, owner's hobbies, interests, and dreams, the will to have a specific felinonym, etc. The owners of cats have chosen existing names from the language or created occasionalisms. The majority of these names have been derived and created from simple names, but there are also suffix derivatives, ending derivatives, compounds, and subordinate wordgroups. The research in socio-onomastics in zoonyms allows us to conclude that cat names are not simply derived from fauna semantics since the names of animal species within felinonyms can also appear indirectly or, in other cases, the linkage to the fauna could also be only presumed. The term folk etymology is traditionally used to denote an erroneous, usually arbitrary connection of an etymologically opaque word to a word which is similar in the form or meaning but it is of different origin. Our approach is wider, we consider folk etymology as a part of folk linguistics. Folk (or also learned) etymology is one of the oldest methods of interpreting proper names and we can meet this phenomenon as early as in medieval chronicles. Folk interpretations often grow into size of etymological tales. They represent the period of the so-called pre-scientific etymology. However, folk etymology has not been replaced by scientific etymology, it is still alive and part of language users’ awareness. The term “folk etymology” was introduced by E. Förstemann in his paper Über deutsche Volksetymologie / About German Folk Etymology (1852) where he mentioned a whole range of examples for proper names. The term folk etymology coined by Förstemann was, despite some criticism, adopted into other languages including Czech. Three years later and independently of Förstemann, H. Wedgwood published a paper on what he called “false etymologies”. Similar terms actually appear in other lan)guages as well but they are considered problematic as they imply something improper. Folk etymology is sometimes treated as a non-scientific deformation of a language reality, as a misleading, deceptive preconception, which the educated scientists shall make sure to remove. F. de Saussure even supported the idea of folk etymology being something “pathological”. However, this opinion of his was frequently criticised. Nowadays, we do not perceive folk etymology as something wrong which is to be corrected. In our conception, the folk etymology is understood as a natural tendency of language users to explain foreign and opaque words as well as proper names, and to interpret, search and clarify the meaning connections even if these are not present. Folk etymology is usually characterized as an erroneous etymological-semantic inter)pretation of a word. So far, the research of this phenomenon in the Czech context has focused almost exclusively on appellatives and oikonyms (names of settlements); folk etymology in anoikonyms (names of non-settlement objects) has been the subject of research very rarely. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to fill this gap by presenting a case study based on an analyse of folk etymologies in anoikonyms in the Sedlčany region in the Central Bohemia. It analyses and compares the scholarly and folk etymologies in ten chosen anoikonyms. The main goal of the research is to identify both linguistic and non-lin)guistic factors leading to the development of folk etymology and affecting its form and result. The linguistic factors can be identified on lexical-semantic, word-formative and phonetic levels. The affected names usually contain low frequency appellatives (e. g. dia)lect, archaic words), and their form can be also affected by various sound changes. The language users create a new interpretation of an etymologically non-transparent name by association with an acoustically similar word, often using not only their fantasy, but in some cases also a very good knowledge of the named object and its surroundings. The article discusses the non-scholarly (folk) etymology and its role in the interpretation of some Slovak oikonyms. In Slovakia, the topic of non-scholarly etymology has been studied primarily by V. Uhlár who also used the term “farmer etymology” which linked a village name with a surname of a yeoman family. The study contains analyzed examples of some non-scholarly etymologies that have originated as a result of a reinterpretation of the original meaning of an oikonym but possibly also due to the incorrect decomposition of a name. The focus is also on the formation of etymological legends that are part of folk literature and as such, they represent an inherent aspect of non-scholarly etymology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses 379 folk etymological interpretations and other 141 assumptions about the foreign origin of surnames, all received either by the radio programme On the Origin of Surnames, the Language Counselling Centre of the Czech Language Institute, or the information service Ask the Library. These inquiries were sent by the public along with requests for a confirmation of the suggested etymological interpre)tations of the surnames in question, or for an official (correct / scientific) explanation. The analysis shows that most often the folk etymology consists in erroneous decomposition of the name or in connecting the name with an incorrect original form, i.e. usually a familiar noun recognized in the name. The folk etymologies do not respect the word-forming structure of names. They also ignore the age and origin of the surname which they like to look for in foreign languages (especially in French, Polish, Hungarian), regardless of the origin of the family. The paper deals with minor place names in Bohemia which include the common noun necky (a Czech word of Slavic origin meaning “a wooden washtub, used for hand washing clothes”) or its diminutive form necičky. The focus is on etymological and motivational analysis of the names as well as their geographical occurrence. The geographical term of a metaphorical origin necky meaning “valley/basin resembling a washtub” occurs in nearly 150 minor place names, found mainly in hilly and plain regions of the Central, Eastern and northeastern Bohemia. The names denote fields, meadows, pastures etc. found in a terrain resembling a washtub, i. e. with sides higher than the bottom, most of them being of a very old origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article deals with issues of phytonyms, i.e. with proper names of plants, especially with dendronyms – names of trees – as one of subsidiary groups of names. In Czech onomastics, close attention has not been paid to phytonyms so far. The first part of the article focuses on defining the group of phytonyms and especially on dubious aspects of this issue – in linguistic, non-onomastic works, phytonyms often include appellative names of plants (jahoda – strawberry), dendronyms often include appellative names of trees (buk – beech), similar approach can be found in other Slavonic languages as well as in onomastic works written in German. Attention is also paid to discussions on names of plant varieties, on the borderline of chrematonyms and phytonyms. The second part of the article is focused on several extensive online databases of Czech dendronyms and indicates possibilities of further research in this field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prispevek podaja tipološki prikaz lastnoimenskih in občnoimenskih poimenovanj dramskih oseb v slovenski dramatiki s konca 18. stol. (Dev, Linhart, Mure), ki so z njimi skladno s tematiko in žanrom dramskih besedil družbeno, značajsko in pragmatično opredeljene. Primerjava z današnjo izbiro imen in ljubkovalnih vzdevkov v Möderndorferjevi komediji Nežka se moži [...] omogoča vpogled v psihosocialne razlike treh Linhartovih likov. The paper presents a typological view of proper and common names of protagonists in Slovene drama in the late 18th century (Dev, Linhart, Mure) which, according to the theme and genre of dramatic works, are socially, psychologically and pragmatically defined. Comparison with today's choice of names and nicknames in Möderndorfer's Comedy Nežka se moži [...] (Nežka is Getting Married) provides insight into the psychosocial differences of three of Linhart's characters.

The paper presents the records of Upper Carniolan house names in the Franciscan cadastre from the third decade of 19th century, in which the recorders not only used different writings and orthographies but above all, wrote down the dialectal microtoponyms that they heard during the fieldwork in different ways. However, these historical records can help dialectologists and etymologists to explain the source of the recorded geographical names and their motivation. At the same time, they reveal those features of spoken language that have been preserved in the names, while in contemporary spoken dialect they may no longer be heard.

Podžablje and Gradac area, which lays in the hinterland of Neum, is a country border area, as well as an area of ethnolinguistic contact. Specific geographical isolation, tumultous historic events, as well as mirriads of multiethnic, multireligious, and especially multilinguistic contacts throughout the centuries make up for a unique cultural footprint of the population, which is especially evident in their linguistic heritage. Names of places, people and animals are some of the most curious linguistic phenomena which showcase the heterogenity of cultural influences on the area. Through onomastic analysis of the onymic fund of Podžablje, it is possible to discern the ethnolinguistic influences on the populace throughout history. In the modes and motifs of naming, as well as in name using, the possibility of discerning ways on which these multicentennial influences help build up the patterns of discourse of the community of Gradac arises.

Uz analizu osobnih imena po podrijetlu i tvorbi, autori donose i potvrde neuobičajenih te rijetkih osobnih imena., Tithe registries are valuable onomastic sources as they abound in attestations of first names. The tithe registry of Gorica district from 1464 is one of the oldest church tithe registries in Croatia. It is also one of the largest tithe registries given that it contains more than 2000 first names from almost 80 villages. It contains names of judges, judicial clerks, landholders and foreigners. The registry was handwritten in Latin and has not been studied or published in print yet. In the 15th century the historical Gorica church tithe district was situated in Slavonia, the central part of the medieval Kingdom of Croatia. The area was very densly populated until the commencement of Ottoman incursions, when massive waves of migrants started emigrating towards the northwest. This paper gives an onomastic analysis of first names in the tithe registry of Gorica district. The inventory of first names is analyzed from etymological, typological and historiographical point of view. First names are classified according to their origin and formation. The main goal of this paper is to propose a significant contribution to the research of Croatian historical anthroponymy, and especially anthroponymy of the late Middle Ages. Our data is comparable to earlier analysis of historical sources, from different Croatian territories in the 15th century. In this respect this data acknowledges many similarities to other Croatian regions. Contrary to the traditional paradigm of European onomastics, according to which the middle of the 16th century represents a watershed moment (the Council of Trent) which greatly influenced the use of Christian first names and family names, the 1464 Gorica district registry is (another) historical source confirming that these processes started much earlier.

Oni pokazuju nešto nižu zastupljenost unutarobiteljskih odnosa nego civilni natpisi, no ipak znatno višu u usporedbi s pojedinim ranije istraženim graničnim pokrajinama Rimskog Carstva. This thesis is a study of the Roman family in the province of Lower Pannonia. It investigates the importance of familial and non-familial relationships attested on funerary inscriptions. All known tombstones set up during the Principate (1st to 3rd century CE), with clear relationship between the deceased and the dedicator are included. The final sample is made up of 585 epitaphs from a variety of civilian and military settlements in Lower Pannonia. The full catalogue is given at the end of the dissertation. Inscriptions originate from Aquincum, Intercisa, Mursa, Syrmium, and other settlements in the vicinity of the Roman border along the Danube. In terms of their typology, the bulk of monuments consists of stelae, plaques, fragments of sarcophagi, and funerary altars. Sometimes it was impossible to determine typological features, either due to the fact that a monument had been lost, or because a text was provided exclusively from earlier transcriptions. The vast majority of surviving epitaphs came from secondary use. As is known, the original graves gradually became completely bereft of their sculptural decorations as early as in late antiquity. In addition to that, the local population continuously used stone material as spolia in domestic and public buildings. Whenever possible, I examined the monuments by autopsy. Otherwise, they were studied from printed corpora, individual publications, and digital databases. Occasionally, I revised previous readings offered by digital databases. The funerary texts usually contain the name of the deceased and of the commemorator, their personal relationship, terms of endearment, and the lifespan of the deceased. In our sample, 1874 individuals are mentioned, with the names mostly partially preserved. Some inscriptions record relationships without giving the names of the persons involved. Altogether, 1031 acts of commemoration have been attested. Fourteen inscriptions are composed in verse. Almost every fifth was set up when the dedicator was still alive (se vivo / viva). About half of them begin with an invocation of the spirits of the departed (Dis Manibus). It seems that the formula was rarely recorded when the dedicators were still alive. The introductory formula is followed by the name of the deceased, mostly in the dative case. Sometimes the origin of the deceased is referred to by a toponym or an ethnonym. As an individual’s place of origin (origo), Aquincum is the most frequently mentioned among the Pannonian towns, while the Syrian city of Emesa tops other extra-Pannonian settlements. The latter corresponds well to the fact that a numerous Syrian detachment was stationed in Intercisa after the Marcomannic Wars (166-180). The precise age at death often occurs on children's epitaphs, but it is also found elsewhere. The rounding-up of ages to numbers that terminate in 5 or 0 is evident on more than half of the inscriptions. Ignorance of the exact age at death can be attributed to widespread illiteracy. Every fourth epitaph contains the formula hic situs est after the deceased's name. Along with the commemorator and the deceased, some inscriptions mention other individuals who took care of setting up the monument. The epitaphs rarely reveal circumstances of death or reasons for erecting a monument. Out of sixteen monuments that record the costs of funerary commemoration, six give precise information on the spent money. The highest confirmed cost is 15,500 HS, which roughly corresponds to the annual salary of lower officers of the time. It is not clear whether these figures relate to the construction of the monument or to all funeral services. Two inscriptions address a passer-by, thus providing a link between the monument and its audience. Only one epitaph ends with a spiritual sanction in the form of a curse. The most common ending formulas are hic situs est and sit tibi terra levis. Almost half of the inscriptions from Lower Pannonia include epithets that describe the deceased or the dedicator. The formulaic nature of the epithets means that they provide little information about real emotional ties and family bonds. They mostly appear in marital commemorations, or between freed slaves and their patrons. The terms piissimus or pientissimus (“most devoted”) appear to have been used mainly among spouses, dulcissimus (“sweetest”) for sons and daughters, and bene merens (“well-deserved”) for patrons. In Lower Pannonia inscribed tombstones were chiefly found outside of their original context. The vast majority of them cannot be precisely dated. Most of the inscriptions are only approximately dated, usually based on the combination of various criteria, such as the occurrence of the epigraphic formulae, monument typology, onomastics, and paleographic features. In our sample, only one tombstone bears a consular date. The monuments with the formula hic situs(-a) est (“lies here”) are generally dated to the 1st and 2nd centuries, while others, bearing the dedication Dis Manibus, mostly pertain to the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Neither of the two formulas can point to an exact date, and they somewhat chronologically overlap. All relationships are broken up into nuclear family, extended family, heirs, friends, and servile relationships categories. Brothers (fratres) constitute the closest kin. On eight occasions the brothers were testamentary heirs. Fellow soldiers are sometimes referred to as brothers. On only three occasions, their name patterns have been preserved enough to distinguish the differences in gentile names, i. e. that they were not born brothers. Sisters (sorores) were usually participating in group commemorations. The term coniunx in the meaning of husband is more often attested than maritus, while compar and virginius appear sporadically. As a term for wife, coniunx was more frequently used than compar. Remarriage is rarely attested, as when a dedicator recorded the name of both a former and a current spouse on a same inscription. The most common kinship relations are sons (filii) and daughters (filiae). Children were sometimes born into relationships without conubium, in which cases they were described as filii naturales. As for the extended family, a range of blood relatives and in-laws occur: grandparents (avi), grandmothers (aviae), fathers-in-law (soceri), mothers-in-law (socrae), uncles (avuculi), aunts (amitae), nephews (nepotes), sonsin-law (generi), daughters-in-law (nurus), cousins (nepotes; consobrini). Unrelated heirs have been confirmed by a number of examples. They are prominent on military epitaphs, where fellow soldiers (sometimes referred to as fratres) appear as heirs to the deceased's property. Furthermore, friends (amici) and freedmen (liberti) are regularly recorded. Although they sometimes took care of setting up a monument on their own, friends are usually listed together with members of the nuclear family. Freedmen appear more often in the role of dedicators than the deceased. Some inherited the patron's property and left a statement about it. Some freedwomen married their former patrons, while others had their own freedmen. Foster children (alumni), guardians (tutores), and slaves (servi) occur very sporadically. The main body of the thesis offers an analysis of funerary commemoration and family relations in order to assess the relative importance of familial and non-familial relations. I have collated the data using the method of Richard P. Saller and Brent D. Shaw. In the paper “Tombstones and Roman Family Relations in the Principate: Civilians, Soldiers and Slaves“ (1984), they focused on individual acts of commemoration, and counted them on epitaphs from Italy and the western provinces. Following their methodology, I divided the data into civilian and military samples, counting 299 and 286 inscriptions, respectively. A total of 1,874 individuals occurred, of whom 945 were on civilian and 929 on military stones. More than three-quarters of civilian relations belong to the nuclear family. This fits in with the results obtained by Saller and Shaw. The commemoration patterns show that the members of the nuclear family – and not the extended multigenerational family – mostly took care in perpetuating the memory. If the result had emphasized relations between extended and multigenerational families (i. e. the ones ruled by the pater familias), they would have been far frequently dedicated to agnatically connected individuals, especially to paternal grandparents. However, the grandfathers are markedly underrepresented in the sample from Pannonia Inferior. Only five commemorations between grandparents and their grandchildren have been confirmed, accounting for only 0.5% of civilian dedications. On military inscriptions, two-thirds of all ties belong to the nuclear family. However, in comparison to the civilian sample, fewer people are connected by way of kinship, and more by heirship and friendship. The most common individual relationship is husband-to-wife (13%), followed by dedications among unrelated heirs. The differences in commemorative patterns between civilians and soldiers seem to stem from the military way of life. In addition to the fact that they often served far from their homelands, soldiers were subject to the marriage ban during most of the Principe. The lack of familial relationships was somewhat compensated by an increased number of dedications among friends. The extended family is particularly poorly confirmed on military epitaphs, weaker than ties to unrelated heirs. In other words, in the absence of the nuclear family, soldiers were more often commemorated by fellow soldiers, friends, and unrelated heirs. The military commemorations from Pannonia Inferior are divided into three major subcategories (common soldiers, officers, and veterans). All subcategories exhibit similar distributions of nuclear family relations (68-70%). However, there occur significant differences in the frequency of basic relations, especially between common soldiers and veterans. For example, among ordinary soldiers marital dedications account for 14%, among officers 24%, and among veterans 23% of all relationships. These differences can hardly be attributed to the modest sample because all subcategories are attested by a relatively large number of inscriptions (between 80 and 125 inscriptions per category). Low marriage rates among ordinary soldiers are perhaps due to the legal ban on entering marriages. The relations between siblings also show differences by categories. For example, siblings are substantially less represented among veterans than among common soldiers. Commemorations between brothers, some of which fall in the category „fellow soldiers“, are confirmed by twice as many examples among common soldiers as among veterans, although veterans are represented by a much lower number of inscriptions than common soldiers. This phenomenon seems to be associated with freedom to enter marriages, too. In addition, veterans outnumber common soldiers. Even when they were not married, the veterans' siblings were seldom alive or closeby in order to set up a monument. Furthermore, strong patron-freedmen ties for officers are also indicative. Thanks to relatively high incomes, which in the 2nd century amounted to between 10,000 and 100,000 sesterces a year, they were able to have a significant number of slaves, and consequently freedmen clients. The freedmen at times returned gratitude for that benefaction by erecting tombstones. Only Aquincum and Intercisa provide us with a sufficient number of epitaphs for reliable conclusions about family ties in a given town. In contrast, Mursa, Senandria, Syrmium, Gorsium, and Sopianae offer just a handful of relationships, with the result that only one new inscription could significantly change their distribution. To illustrate this, 440 types of relationships between the commemorator and the deceased were recorded in Aquincum, while only 22 in Mursa. In the latter, only half of all relationships fall into the nuclear family category. In Mursa and many other settlements, the low distribution of the nuclear family is actually the consequence of a small number of inscriptions, and is therefore an unreliable indicator of commemorative practice. In addition to the Saller and Shaw method, I reanalysed the funerary commemoration from Pannonia Inferior by using the method established by Dale Martin. In his study of tombstones from Roman Asia Minor, Martin decided not to split up multiple acts of commemoration into a series of individual relationships. Instead, he counted every tombstone as a single act of commemoration. For instance, he counted several different relationships in an extended family as one relationship within an extended family. The results that I obtained by using this method in the sample from Pannonia Inferior differ slightly from the results obtained by the Saller and Shaw method. However, the main features do not show significant deviations. The nuclear family is represented by two thirds of all relationships, while the extended family accounts for less than 10% of all relationships. Friends and heirs also show a very similar distribution as obtained by the first method. In order to further estimate the strength of individual and collective ties, I investigated joint burials and joint acts of commemoration. Altogether 206 joint burials and 144 joint acts of commemoration have been confirmed. In both cases, members of the nuclear family predominate. They occur in 80% of joint burials and 69% of joint acts of commemoration. Several joint multi-generational commemorations have been confirmed. The cases are obviously not numerous enough to suggest that extended family ties were widely commemorated. The gender and age distributions were investigated as well. The biggest gender differences between civilian and military commemorators were expected in the conjugal line. Among civilians, there are 22 male per 10 female commemorators, while among soldiers, only 8 male per 10 female commemorators. The results are quite different from those in other Western provinces. The differences are probably due to the fact that in the Lower Pannonian sample, common soldiers and officers predominate over veterans. Namely, in the first two subcategories, more commemorations of women to husbands were recorded than vice versa. In the descending and ascending nuclear family, men more often erected tombstones in both civilian and military sample. As for the deceased, women predominate in the conjugal and descending lines among civilians. In the ascending line and in all three lines in the military sample, the deceased are mostly men. The results coincide with the general principles of gender representation in Roman epitaphs. Age analysis showed that men were more likely to record age. The attested age among civilians ranges from 9 months to 100 years, with the average about 37 years of age. Almost every fifth civil epitaph was set up for those under 10 years of age. With the exception of Italy and part of Dalmatia (Salona), this is the largest share of epigraphically attested children at the Empire level, and resembles the share in Gaul and Carthage. If we look at commemorations of the parents to their children, the vast majority (88%) apply to small children and adolescents, while the rest fall to adult children. The low distribution of parental dedications to adult children is perhaps related to the fact that the deceased mostly received new commemorators, namely their spouses. Furthermore, many parents were probably not alive at the time of the death of their adult children. Finally, when the parents were not around, the spouse's parents sometimes used to take part in the commemoration. If we look at conjugal commemorations, the average age of commemorated women is 34.7, and men 58 years of age. By the age of 40, women received almost 10 times more epitaphs than men in the same age group. After reaching the age of 40, men received almost twice as many dedications as women in the same age group. From this we may conclude that husbands and wives erected tombstones for each other according to the expected gender roles. Women of reproductive age and men of older age were more likely to receive funerary inscriptions than other age groups. Finally, the role of the family in transmitting names has been examined. The father's name was usually inherited in the form of filiation, which is best attested on the peregrini and the auxiliary soldiers' tombstones. The role of agnatic kinship is best seen in the cases of sons or daughters bearing their father's name. Although three generations of the same family rarely appear on the inscriptions, it occurred that several grandsons inherited their grandfather's names. Some inscriptions suggest that the grandfather's name was inherited even in cases where he was not mentioned at all. Furthermore, one example of filiation in the form of a matronymic as part of a personal name has been confirmed. Peregrines and citizens sometimes inherited the mother's full name. Descendants born in a community without conubia regularly inherited their mother’s gentilicium. An affiliation a wider kinship grouping (cognatio) occurs only once. The main conclusions derived from this research essentially coincide with the conclusions of studies conducted for other areas in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It turned out that the epigraphically attested inhabitants of Pannonia Inferior displayed the Roman model of family organization, similar to Italy and western provinces. Judging from epigraphic evidence, the Roman family in Lower Pannonia was essentially organized as a community of parents and their children. All other relationships based on kinship occur too rarely to be considered characteristic of the local population. Unlike literary or legal sources, the epigraphic material does not convey an image of the Roman family as a patrilineal and patrilocal multigenerational community, ruled by an almost almighty pater familias. Is rather seems that the family changed over time by birth, death, divorce, remarriage, or change of social status. It should be stressed out that conclusions based on tombstones apply only to epigraphically confirmed inhabitants. The results do not reflect demographic reality nor the actual family structure, but point to the strength of relationships in this province during the Principate.

Onomastics, dealing with culture-specific terms, poses great challenges for literary translators, especially for translators of sacred texts. Translating God’s Names requires profound cultural knowledge. The paper is aimed at investigating procedures of translating God’s Names in English translations of the Glorious Qur’an by adopting Liang’s (2016) model. After identifying the equivalents of proper names in 26 English translations, the procedures used for rendering them were identified. Finally, the general tendencies of procedures were specified. The findings revealed that two procedures used by the Qur’an translators (‘couplet’ and ‘transposition’) do not appear in Liang’s (2016) model. It was also found that the procedure of ‘convention’ was by far (60.50%) the most frequently used procedure. Additionally, the data analysis revealed that no translator used procedures of ‘naturalization’ and ‘rendition’. Moreover, it was found that 1.60% of procedures were source-oriented and 98.40% of them were target-oriented. In other words, all English translators of the Holy Qur’an showed greater tendencies to adopt target-oriented procedures in rendering God’s Names. Prospective researchers can work on other language pairs and translations of God’s proper names in other sacred texts., Budući da su usko vezana uz kulturološke specifičnosti, imena su velik izazov književnim prevoditeljima, posebice prevoditeljima svetih tekstova.

The diploma thesis deals with the anthroponymy, namely native (first) names and their hypocoristic changes in various emotional communication situations. Onomastics is introduced as a scientific discipline, the term anthroponym, birth name and hypocorism are also included. The practical part of the thesis captures birth names and their hypocoristic material in the selected locality, while the obtained material is then analysed both in terms of etymology (determining the origin and meaning of birth names) and word formation (recording trends in the way hypocorisms are formed).

This bachelor thesis deals with the names of streets and squares in the town of Sedlčany. Attention is paid to the changes in the street names from the nineteenth century to present time. This time span is divided into six periods based on historical development. In each of these periods, the urbanonyms are divided according to the motivation of their name, which is explained for each of the urbanonyms. The ratio of honorific urbanonyms and orientational urbanonyms is also the focus of observation. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the onomastics of the town of Sedlčany.

This paper analyzes the place names in the municipality of Kršan and the municipality of Pula with the aim of finding the motivation behind the name. The paper consists of several parts - the initial part as a theoretical part that defines and explains the terms of oïkonymy and onomastics, the second part that describes the history of Istria and the recesses historic and sub sequential linguistic elements that influenced the culture and the language in Istria. Finally, the third part analyzes the place names in the municipality of Kršan and the municipality of Pula according to Šimunović’s typology of place names (cf. 1975; 1979; 2009) This research can serve as an incentive for further research of istrian toponyms in order to reveal and preserve data on the general history and linguistic history of Istria.
