We present the modeling and numerical analysis of a highly sensitive plasmonic nano-ring resonator based on a degenerate n-doped silicon waveguide for bulk and adlayer sensing applications using the finite element method. The figure of merit of the sensor has been greatly improved without compromising the sensitivity value through careful optimization of the opto-geometric parameters to promote field confinement in the sensing region. To overcome the optical losses associated with conventional plasmonic devices, instead of metal, a degenerate n-silicon is used as a plasmonic material in this sensor. Additionally, it renders the device compatible with CMOS technology, enabling a simpler method for fabrication and integration into integrated circuits. A bulk refractive index sensitivity of 1734 nm/RIU with a very high figure of merit of 146 RIU - 1 has been achieved, spanning the biologically relevant refractive index range (1.33 - 1.38 RIU). By considering a specific example of glucose solution in the ambient region, an average glucose sensitivity of 0.21 nm L/g has been observed. The sensor's performance as an adlayer biosensor was also examined, and a significantly high adlayer sensitivity measured is 6.8 nm/nm for a bio-layer of RI ∼ 1.45 RIU. A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor based on dual-side polished photonic crystal fiber (PCF) has been presented in this paper. An external gold (Au) coating was used as a plasmonic material to detect changes in an analyte refractive index (RI). Sensor's structural parameters were optimized for better performance. The proposed sensor's simulation was conducted using the finite element method (FEM). Analytes within the RI range of 1.30 to 1.40 were used to develop a sensor. The numerical results are expected to have a wavelength sensitivity (WS) of 9400 nm/RIU and amplitude sensitivity (AS) of 27.27 RIU−1, respectively, and a spectral wavelength resolution of 1.063 × 10−5. Furthermore, it is expected to obtain maximum loss of 161,270 dB/m for a Y-polarization (Y-P) odd mode with an analyte RI = 1.37. We obtained an extinction ratio of − 321.54 dB for the polarization filter effect, which is considered to be good. This structure has the advantages of being easy to fabricate, affordable, and expected to show better sensitivity than many other sensors. In this article, a theoretical study of Tamm plasmon based Refractive Index (RI) sensor for cancer cell detection has been proposed. The proposed sensor structure comprises of a thin titanium nitride (TiN) layer of thickness (dm = 30 nm) followed by a liquid cell of thickness (dL = 1500 nm) then followed by 16 pairs of semi-porous DBR (spDBR). The high and low index layers of spDBR constitute of silicon nitride (Si3N4) and porous Si3N4, respectively. We considered the porosity of low-index layer as 75%. The existence of Tamm plasmon between TiN and spDBR interface and the effect of porosity on the photonic band gap (PBG) of the spDBR have been studied as well. The impact of dm and dL on the reflection spectrum of the proposed structure has also been investigated. We investigated the detection of cancer-affected cells by replacing the liquid cell with respective cancer-affected cell and its corresponding normal cell, including blood cancer (Jurkat), cervical cancer (HeLa), adrenal gland cancer (PC12), two types of breast cancer (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7), and skin cancer (Basal) cells. The proposed structure achieved the sensitivity, Q-factor, figure of merit, and detection limit of 752.85 nm/RIU, 131.64, 70.62 RIU−1, and 5 × 10−4 RIU, respectively. A terahertz photonic crystal fiber with two sensing channels was designed. Graphene coated on the micro-grooves in the cladding was used as plasma material to introduce tunability. The dispersion relation, mode coupling, and sensing characteristics of the fiber were studied using the finite element method. Ultrahigh sensitivity of 2.014 THz/RIU and 0.734 GHz/°C were obtained for analytes with refractive index in the range of 1.33 to 1.4 and environment temperature in the range of 10–60 °C, respectively. Refractive index resolution can reach the order of 10−5. The dual parameter simultaneous detection, dynamic tunable characteristics, and working in the low-frequency range of terahertz enable the designed photonic crystal fiber to have application prospects in the field of biosensing. In this paper, we design and demonstrate an all-fiber-sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor based on the Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI). It is constructed by splicing two no-core fibers (NCFs) and a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) between two single-mode fibers (SMFs) to obtain an SMF–NCF–PCF–NCF–SMF composite structure (SNPNS). A study of the effect of varying PCF lengths on the RI reveals that the shorter the length, the higher the sensitivity. The maximum RI sensitivity of 176.9 nm/RIU is attained within the RI range of 1.3365–1.3767 when the PCF length in the SNPNS structure is 3 cm. Meanwhile, the sensor exhibits a high stability in water, with an RSD of only 0.0019% for the interference trough over a duration of two hours. This proposed sensing structure offers the advantages of a large extinction ratio, small size, low temperature sensitivity, and simple fabrication, exhibiting a great potential in RI measurements. Abstract Silicon photonic index sensors have received significant attention for label-free bio and gas-sensing applications, offering cost-effective and scalable solutions. Here, we introduce an ultra-compact silicon photonic refractive index sensor that leverages zero-crosstalk singularity responses enabled by subwavelength gratings. The subwavelength gratings are precisely engineered to achieve an anisotropic perturbation-led zero-crosstalk, resulting in a single transmission dip singularity in the spectrum that is independent of device length. The sensor is optimized for the transverse magnetic mode operation, where the subwavelength gratings are arranged perpendicular to the propagation direction to support a leaky-like mode and maximize the evanescent field interaction with the analyte space. Experimental results demonstrate a high wavelength sensitivity of − 410 nm/RIU and an intensity sensitivity of 395 dB/RIU, with a compact device footprint of approximately 82.8 μm2. Distinct from other resonant and interferometric sensors, our approach provides an FSR-free single-dip spectral response on a small device footprint, overcoming common challenges faced by traditional sensors, such as signal/phase ambiguity, sensitivity fading, limited detection range, and the necessity for large device footprints. This makes our sensor ideal for simplified intensity interrogation. The proposed sensor holds promise for a range of on-chip refractive index sensing applications, from gas to biochemical detection, representing a significant step towards efficient and miniaturized photonic sensing solutions. Abstract Refractive index (RI) sensors play an important role in various applications including biomedical analysis and food processing industries. However, developing RI sensors with both high resolution and wide linear range remains a great challenge due to the tradeoff between quality (Q) factor and free spectral range (FSR) of resonance mode. Herein, the optical steelyard principle is presented to address this challenge by synergizing resonances from the Fabry–Perot (FP) cavity and metasurface, integrated in a hybrid configuration form on the end facet of optical fibers. Specifically, the FP resonance acting like the scale beam, offers high resolution while the plasmonic resonance acting like the weight, provides a wide linear range. Featuring asymmetric Fano spectrum due to modal coupling between these two resonances, a high Q value (~ 3829 in liquid) and a sensing resolution (figure of merit) of 2664 RIU−1 are experimentally demonstrated. Meanwhile, a wide RI sensing range (1.330–1.430 in the simulation and 1.3403–1.3757 in the experiment) is realized, corresponding to a spectral shift across several FSRs (four and two FSRs in the simulation and experiment, respectively). The proposed steelyard RI sensing strategy is promising in versatile monitoring applications, e.g., water salinity/turbidity and biomedical reaction process, and could be extended to other types of sensors calling for both high resolution and wide linear range.

A novel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) refractive index (RI) sensor based on the D-type dual-mode photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is proposed. The sensor employs a side-polished few-mode PCF that facilitates the transmission of the fundamental and second-order modes, with an integrated microfluidic channel positioned directly above the fiber core. This design minimizes the distance to the analyte and maximizes the interaction between the optical field and the analyte, thereby enhancing the SPR effect and resonance loss for improved sensing performance. Au-TiO2 dual-layer material was coated on the surface of a microfluidic channel to enhance the penetration depth of the core evanescent field and tune the resonance wavelength to the near-infrared band, meeting the special needs of chemical and biomedical detection fields. The finite element method was utilized to systematically investigate the coupling characteristics between various modes and surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes, as well as the impact of structural parameters on the sensor performance. The results indicate that the LP11b_y mode exhibits greater wavelength sensitivity than the HE11_y mode, with a maximum sensitivity of 33,000 nm/RIU and an average sensitivity of 8272.7 nm/RIU in the RI sensing range of 1.25–1.36, which is higher than the maximum sensitivity of 16,000 nm/RIU and average sensitivity of 5666.7 nm/RIU for the HE11b_y mode. It is believed that the proposed PCF-SPR sensor features both high sensitivity and high resolution, which will become a critical device for wide RI detection in mid-infrared fields. In this paper, an optical refractive index sensor based on a hybrid plasmonic-photonic crystal (P-PhC) topology for detection of various blood components is proposed. The sensor's structure is composed of a gold spiral resonator inside a rod-type hexagonal Si PhC cavity. The finite-difference time-domain method is used for the numerical investigation of the structures. The proposed hybrid sensor provides an astonishing figure of merit (FoM) of 2991 RIU-1 and fairly high sensitivity of 1675 nm/RIU. The maximum FoM achieved in this case is found to be 5 times higher than the conventional plasmonic sensors reported in the literature. For the proposed sensor, combining the stronger plasmonic light-matter interaction and the extraordinary confining properties of the PhC cavity contributes to the FoM enhancement. A novel highly sensitive D-shaped photonic crystal fiber-based surface plasmon resonance (PCF-SPR) sensor for dual parameters of refractive index and temperature detecting is proposed. A PCF cladding polishing provides a D-shape design with a gold (Au) film coating for refractive index (RI) sensing (Core 1) and a composite film of silver (Ag) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for temperature sensing (Core 2). Comsol Multiphysics 5.5 is used to design and simulate the proposed sensor by the finite element method (FEM). The proposed sensor numerically provides results with maximum wavelength sensitivities (WSs) of 51,200 and 56,700 nm/RIU for Core 1 and 2 as RI sensing while amplitude sensitivities are −98.9 and −147.6 RIU−1 with spectral resolution of 1.95 × 10−6 and 1.76 × 10−6 RIU, respectively. Notably, wavelength sensitivity of 17.4 nm/°C is obtained between −20 and −10 °C with resolution of 5.74 × 10−3 °C for Core 2 as temperature sensing. This sensor can efficiently work in the analyte and temperature ranges of 1.33–1.43 RI and −20–100 °C. Due to its high sensitivity and wide detection ranges, both in T and RI sensing, it is a promising candidate for a variety of applications, including chemical, medical, and environmental detection. In this paper, a toroidal metamaterial for achieving highly sensitive sensors in the terahertz (THz) frequency range is proposed. Such a subwavelength structure consists of a pair of mirror-symmetric metal split-ring resonators and a single metal wire. By exciting the structure with vertically incident electromagnetic waves, high-Q transmission peaks are generated at 2.40 and 2.44 THz. Near-field analysis reveals that the reverse-flowing currents in the metal split-ring resonators and the metal wire create a pair of magnetic dipoles connected end to end, resulting in a vortex-like magnetic field known as a toroidal dipole. Calculations of multipole scattering energy further confirm that the rapidly enhanced toroidal dipole is the primary factor responsible for the high-Q transmission peaks. This toroidal metamaterial can be used to design refractive index sensors with a sensitivity of up to 20 GHz/RIU, enabling the detection of subtle changes in the surrounding environment's parameters. In this work, an efficient optical sensor is proposed for the sensitive detection of various pollutants in water. The suggested optical sensor is based on an indium fluoride (InF3) glass fabricated as a D-shaped optical fiber. The polished surface of the D-shaped fiber is coated with a gold grating to induce the surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The SPR depends on the optical properties of the polluted water analyte in physical contact with the grating. The proposed optical SPR fiber sensor operates within the mid-infrared (MIR) range (3000–4500 nm) to detect any slight change in the water refractive index (RI) due to any pollutants. The full vectorial finite element method (FVFEM) is utilized to calculate the modal properties of the reported sensor. High sensor sensitivity of 17,834 nm/RIU (refractive index units) is achieved for the detection of dissolution of nitric acid (HNO3) in water at a concentration of 14% v/v (volume/volume). Additionally, the reported sensor detects the dissolution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in water investigated at concentrations of 15% v/v and 30% v/v, with sensitivities of 12,308 nm/RIU and 17,143 nm/RIU, respectively. Further, suspending polystyrene beads of diameter 0.1 μm in the water at a concentration of 10% v/v gives a maximum sensitivity of 5333 nm/RIU. Therefore, the proposed sensor provides a promising approach for the detection of water pollutants in the MIR wavelength regime, rather than the weaker response in the near infrared. In optical communication and sensing, silicon nitride (SiN) photonics plays a crucial role. By adeptly guiding and manipulating light on a silicon-based platform, it facilitates the creation of compact and highly efficient photonic devices. This, in turn, propels advancements in high-speed communication systems and enhances the sensitivity of optical sensors. This study presents a comprehensive exploration wherein we both numerically and experimentally display the efficacy of a SiN-based ring resonator designed for refractive index sensing applications. The device's sensitivity, numerically estimated at approximately 110 nm/RIU, closely aligns with the experimental value of around 112.5 nm/RIU. The RR sensor's Q factor and limit of detection (LOD) are 1.7154 × 104 and 7.99 × 10−4 RIU, respectively. These congruent results underscore the reliability of the two-dimensional finite element method (2D-FEM) as a valuable tool for accurately predicting and assessing the device's performance before fabrication. This study presents the design and analysis of a novel surface plasmon resonance sensor based on D-type photonic crystal fiber. The analyte channel in the sensor comprises an open ring with a thin gold film deposited on the channel, inducing the surface plasmon resonance effect to enhance the resonance effect and improve the spectral sensitivity of the sensor. The proposed design eliminates the need to introduce liquid into the analyte channel. Upon inserting the sensor into the vessel, the analyte automatically flows into the liquid channel. Simulations illustrate the capability of the proposed sensor to detect low refractive indices spanning from 1. 1 5 to 1. 2 6 , exhibiting a remarkable spectral sensitivity of up to 9000 nm/RIU. In this paper, a novel D-shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) refractive index (RI) sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect is proposed. By introducing a smiley-faced hole and Ag-TiO2 composite micro-grating, the high RI sensing performances can be realized. With finite element method, the propagation characteristics of the proposed D-shaped SPR-PCF RI sensor are numerically investigated. The simulation results show that the average wavelength sensitivity (WS) is 5400 nm/RIU, and the maximum WS can reach 15,500 nm/RIU in the RI range from 1.30 to 1.39. Besides, the proposed D-shaped SPR-PCF RI sensor can obtain the maximum resolution (R) of 4.95 × 10−5RIU and the maximum figure of merit (FOM) of 423.78 RIU−1, respectively. Early identification of Mycobacterium strains that cause TB (Tuberculosis) is crucial in preventing tuberculosis illness. Conventional medical diagnostics, such as PPD (tuberculin skin tests) tests and antibody-assisted tests, have low sensitivity, extensive processing times, and complex post-test procedures. These problems minimize its potential and drive innovation in tuberculosis diagnosis. Biosensors have simplified the identification of illnesses by reducing the time between sample and results. This paper proposes a circular ring-shaped refractive index sensor for the identification of the four different types of mycobacterium tuberculosis cells. This sensor has achieved the highest sensitivity of 1500 nm/RIU for all four types of tb cells by analyzing the different parameters like substrate height, resonator height, radius of the circle, length of the substrate, and width of the circle resonator. It covers the wavelength range of 2000 nm to 2050 nm. The highest value of the quality factor has been observed is 40,280 for TBC2 (Tuberculosis cell 2, specific type of tuberculosis) and the highest value of the figure of merit has been observed is 30,000 for TBC2 compared to normal cells. A highly sensitive and simple structure side-polished micro-structured fiber (MOF) refractive index (RI) sensor based on surface plasmon resonance is proposed and studied by the finite element method. The gold nanofilm used to stimulate plasmons is directly deposited on the inner wall of the open-loop channel of a MOF consisting of an arrangement of six cladding air-holes. The sample analyte is arranged on the outer surface of the optical fiber to improve the utilization rate of the sensor and reduce the tediousness of operation. Meanwhile, in order to increase the leakage intensity of evanescent field, three large air-holes were introduced near the fiber core. Research has shown that the proposed sensor can achieve sensing detection in the range of 1.19–1.37 RI. The maximum sensitivity in the x-polarized direction can reach 12,500 nm/RIU, and its corresponding resolution is 3.64 × 10–5 RIU. Moreover, it has a high linear response of 0.9944 within the RI detection range of 1.19–1.33. A lossy mode resonance (LMR) prism refractive index (RI) sensor theoretical model based on the lithium fluoride (LiF)/ Indium tin oxide (ITO)/LiF structure is presented in this study. The performance of the sensor has been analysed using under angular interrogation technique. The performance is significantly enhanced using the LiF as the matching layer and ITO as the lossy layer. This paper also proposes the design concepts for the device and investigates the effects of modifications in the sensor structure on the reflectance. The device has various sensing characteristics under TE and TM polarised light, and the results demonstrate that its RI sensing range is between 1.33 and 1.39. This LMR sensor has the highest quality factor of 4104.0 RIU−1 under TE polarised light and 693 RIU−1 under TM polarised light. A novel fiber sensor for the refractive index sensing of seawater based on a Mach–Zehnder interferometer has been demonstrated. The sensor consisted of a single-mode fiber (SMF)–no-core fiber (NCF)–single-mode fiber structure (shortened to an SNS structure) with a large lateral offset spliced between the two sections of a multimode fiber (MMF). Optimization studies of the multimode fiber length, offset SNS length, and vertical axial offset distance were performed to improve the coupling efficiency of interference light and achieve the best extinction ratio. In the experiment, a large lateral offset sensor was prepared to detect the refractive index of various ratios of saltwater, which were used to simulate seawater environments. The sensor's sensitivity was up to −13,703.63 nm/RIU and −13,160 nm/RIU in the refractive index range of 1.3370 to 1.3410 based on the shift of the interference spectrum. In this paper, we study both theoretically and experimentally the sensitivity of bimodal interferometric sensors where interference occurs between two plasmonic modes with different properties propagating in the same physical waveguide. In contrast to the well-known Mach–Zehnder interferometric (MZI) sensor, we show for the first time that the sensitivity of the bimodal sensor is independent of the sensing area length. This is validated by applying the theory to an integrated plasmo-photonic bimodal sensor that comprises an aluminum (Al) plasmonic stripe waveguide co-integrated between two accessible SU-8 photonic waveguides. A series of such bimodal sensors utilizing plasmonic stripes of different lengths were numerically simulated, demonstrating bulk refractive index (RI) sensitivities around 5700 nm/RIU for all sensor variants, confirming the theoretical results. The theoretical and numerical results were also validated experimentally through chip-level RI sensing experiments on three fabricated SU-8/Al bimodal sensors with plasmonic sensing lengths of 50, 75, and 100 μm. The obtained experimental RI sensitivities were found to be very close and equal to 4464, 4386, and 4362 nm/RIU, respectively, confirming that the sensing length has no effect on the bimodal sensor sensitivity. The above outcome alleviates the design and optical loss constraints, paving the way for more compact and powerful sensors that can achieve high sensitivity values at ultra-short sensing lengths. The curing of epoxy resin is a complex thermo-chemical process that is difficult to monitor using existing sensing systems. We monitored the curing process of an epoxy resin by using long-period fiber gratings. The refractive index of the epoxy resin increases during the curing process and can be measured to determine the degree of curing. We employed long-period fiber gratings that are sensitive to the refractive index of an external medium for the measurement of refractive index changes in the resin. We observed that the resonances of long-period fiber gratings increased their depth with the increased refractive index of the resin, which was well described by our simulation taking the coupling to radiation modes into account. We demonstrated that the degree of cure can be estimated from the depth of the grating resonances using a phenomenological model. At the same time, long-period fiber gratings are sensitive to temperature variations and internal strains that are induced during curing. In this research, we proposed and numerically investigated a D-shaped dual-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) refractive index (RI) sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and a plasma material indium tin oxide (ITO) is deposited on the polished surface of a D-shaped PCF to produce the SPR effect. The proposed PCF sensor incorporates a dual-core structure and innovatively introduces an elliptical air hole, which increases the coupling of the SPR effect, resulting in a notable improvement in sensor performance. This enhancement enables the sensor to efficiently detect variations in the RI of the analyte. Utilizing the finite element method (FEM), we analyzed the influencing characteristics of sensor performance, meticulously investigating and optimizing various structural parameters. In the RI sensing range spanning from 1.18 to 1.33, the designed PCF sensor exhibits an outstanding maximum wavelength sensitivity of 29,300 nm/RIU, along with the highest achievable amplitude sensitivity of 261.01 RIU−1. Upon analyzing the light signal modulated by the sensor, the findings unequivocally demonstrate that the proposed sensor displays outstanding sensitivity to changes in the analyte's RI via the SPR effect. This responsiveness enables effective and precise real-time detection. The proposed sensor is characterized by exceptional sensing performance, strong economic feasibility, and low manufacturing intricacy. An ultrahigh sensitivity surface plasmon resonance sensor based on double-side polished photonic crystal fiber is designed, and the gold film with a zigzag cross section is used as the plasmonic material. We study the refractive index sensing characteristics of the proposed sensor by numerical simulation. The results show that compared with the flat gold film structure, the zigzag gold film structure effectively improves the sensing performance, and the sensitivity and resolution of the sensor are significantly enhanced. The maximum wavelength sensitivity and resolution of the proposed sensor can reach 20,000 nm/RIU and 5.00 × 10−6 RIU, respectively. The working wavelength range of the sensor is between 590 and 1200 nm, and the refractive index range that can be used for detection is 1.350 RIU-1.400 RIU. This can be applied to precise detection of extracellular vesicles, breast cancer cell, and red blood cells. The proposed sensor has significant advantages such as stable structure, ultrahigh sensitivity, fast response, small size, and saving noble metal. This work presents a dynamically tunable metal–insulator-metal (MIM) graphene hybrid refractive index sensor and narrow-band filter. Through the use of the finite element method (FEM), the transmission characteristics and magnetic field distributions of the system are meticulously explored. Additionally, these findings are corroborated theoretically by the multimode interference coupled mode theory (MICMT). The results affirm that by incorporating graphene into the structure, dynamic regulation can be achieved by altering chemical potentials. Furthermore, the structure exhibits the capability to function as a narrow-band filter, with its effectiveness contingent on the thickness of the graphene layer. With careful optimization of structural parameters and manipulation of the refractive index of the dielectric material within the resonant cavity, the structure's sensitivity (S) can reach 2000 nm/RIU, complemented by a figure of merit (FOM) scaling to 188.54 RIU−1. We proposed the numerical studies and machine learning prediction for the multilayered Borophene-GST-silica-Ag-based refractive index sensor for the 1.3–1.5 µm wavelength range. The top layers of the proposed sensor incorporate Ag gratings. The proposed structure utilizes a mode based on surface plasmonic resonance, which has been created using a finite element model through computational analysis. Resonance is observed across a range of refractive index values from 1 to 2.5, which primarily aligns with the refractive indices of key biomolecules such as haemoglobin, saliva, urine, and cancerous cells. The proposed structure has also been investigated for the different physical parameters such as material height, grating space, the incident wave's wide incident angle, and the GST material's phase. We demonstrate the modulation of reflectance values in response to varying phases of the GST material (amorphous and crystalline), which can be controlled through external temperature changes. The distribution of the electric and magnetic fields of the structure is also provided in order to examine the field distribution across the grating and other layers of material. This sensor offers a wide angle of stability (0 to 80°) for the respective resonating points. An artificial neural network is employed to analyze the simulated data and make predictions regarding the behaviour of the structure. We have found the R2 = 0.97 for the proposed artificial neural network (ANN) model. The ANN model of this structure also presented the values of mean square error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE) for different epoch values. Results shown in this research can help to sense the wide range of biomolecule samples whose refractive index ranges from 1 to 2.5. In this study, we present an optical gas sensor (OGS) utilizing a remarkably compact photonic crystal ring resonator. Our novel design boasts an impressive resolution of 0.002 refractive index units (RIU). The sensor is ingeniously engineered by optimizing an add-drop filter with circular rods in a square lattice, which is then followed by the development of a new two-port resonator tailored for precise gas detection. By incorporating a novel circular ring at the resonator's core, we achieve exceptional performance metrics, such as a narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) and a high Q-factor. To comprehensively analyze the sensor's behavior, we employ the two-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) method to investigate the transmission spectrum and electromagnetic field distribution. The resulting design demonstrates remarkable attributes, including a remarkable transmission efficiency of 98%, an impressive Q-factor of 3040, and a sensitivity of 940 nm/RIU. Moreover, it offers a free spectral range of 100 nm and an outstanding figure of merit of 2186 RIU− 1. These exceptional evaluation parameters unequivocally establish the superior performance of our optical sensor. Furthermore, our sensor's compact footprint of merely 105.26 µm2 positions it ideally for integration into optical integrated circuits (PICs). In this study, we introduce and simulate a symmetric square Si (silicon) grating absorber optimized using particle swarm optimization (PSO). To carry out the simulation of the absorption spectrum, we utilize the three dimensional (3D) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The unit cells are made up of a combination of silicon square grating, gold, and quartz. The physical absorption mechanism is that a strong light response is caused by surface plasmon resonance. We have optimized geometric parameters to get the optimal output of the designed plasmonic absorber. In the wavelength ranging from 4000 to 6000 nm, we obtain a narrowband absorption peak with perfect absorption of over 99.9%. Additionally, the proposed absorber's performance is analyzed concerning incident angle and polarization, which shows good polarization and incident angle stability. Through manipulating the geometrical parameters, the structure exhibits a high sensitivity of 1606 nm.RIU−1 and figure of merit (FOM) of 30. In this study, a comprehensive numerical analysis is conducted on a hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPWG)-based racetrack ring resonator (RTRR) structure, tailored specifically for refractive index sensing applications. The sensor design optimization yields remarkable results, achieving a sensitivity of 275.7 nm/RIU. Subsequently, the boundaries of sensor performance are pushed even further by integrating a subwavelength grating (SWG) structure into the racetrack configuration, thereby augmenting the light–matter interaction. Of particular note is the pivotal role played by the length of the SWG segment in enhancing device sensitivity. It is observed that a significant sensitivity enhancement can be obtained, with values escalating from 377.1 nm/RIU to 477.7 nm/RIU as the SWG segment length increases from 5 µm to 10 µm, respectively. This investigation underscores the immense potential of HPWG in tandem with SWG for notably enhancing the sensitivity of photonic sensors. These findings not only advance the understanding of these structures but also pave the way for the development of highly efficient sensing devices with unprecedented performance capabilities. This paper introduces a refractive index sensor based on Fano resonance, utilizing a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide structure with an Anchor-like cavity. This study utilizes the finite element method (FEM) for analyzing the propagation characteristics of the structure. The evaluation concentrated on assessing how the refractive index and the structure's geometric parameters affect its sensing characteristics. The designed structure demonstrates optimum performance, achieving a maximum sensitivity of 2440 nm/RIU and an FOM of 63. Given its high sensitivity, this nanoscale refractive index sensor is ideal for detecting hemoglobin concentrations in blood, and the sensor's sensitivity is 0.6 nm·g/L, aiding in clinical prevention and treatment. In this paper, a novel nano sensor structure is proposed, which consists of a metal-insulator-metal waveguide (MIM) with rectangular baffles and a water droplet cavity with rectangular stubs (WDCRS). The WDCRS structure optimizes the sensitivity of a single water droplet cavity and makes the transmission curve clearer and smoother. The transmission characteristics of WDCRS structure were simulated using finite element method (FEM). The transmission characteristics of the exported structure were analyzed in detail. In addition, the influence of structural geometric parameters on sensing performance was also studied, and it was found that the size of the water droplet cavity is a key factor in improving sensitivity. When applied to a refractive index sensor, the structure achieves a sensitivity of up to 2,300 nm/ RIU with a corresponding figure of merit (FOM) of 60.5. Ellipsoidal plasmonic particles are of huge importance in the biosensing field due to their orientation-specific light scattering properties and higher area of surface-adhesive interactions. In this paper, we present a computational investigation of the orientation-specific plasmonic properties of graphene-wrapped—Au nano ellipsoids of various aspect ratios and graphene layer thicknesses using the discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) method. We could observe that both the dipolar and quadrapolar resonances of Au ellipsoids are strongly modulated by graphene layer. Furthermore, we have modelled graphene wrapped Au ellipsoidal nanoarray biosensor with optimized orientation having very high sensitivity (484 nm/RIU) towards refractive index changes associated with various fibrillation stages of beta amyloid (biomarker for Alzheimer's disease) compared to the bare Au nanoellipsoidal biosensor. Based on the characteristics of plasmonic waveguides and resonators, we propose a refractive index (RI) sensor that couples a gear ring with a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide. Using the finite element method (FEM), we conduct extensive spectral analysis of the sensor's properties in the near-infrared spectrum. Furthermore, we investigate the structural parameters affecting the refractive index sensing characteristics. This study reveals that the complexity of the ring cavity edge can significantly enhance the sensitivity of the nanosensor. Optimal structural performance parameters are selected when the number of gears is six, resulting in a sensitivity of 3102 nm/RIU and a Figure of Merit (FOM) of 57.4 for the sensing characteristics of the gear ring. It possesses the advantages of small size and high sensitivity. This nanoscale sensor design demonstrates high sensitivity in the field of industrial material temperature detection. An infrared (IR) tunable perfect meta-absorber (TPM) is presented, which is configured of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure. The unit cell of the TPM device is composed of two opposite T-shaped and two rod-shaped Au resonators on the reflective mirror layer. The optimized feature size of TPM can achieve perfect absorption and the resonant wavelength can be tuned from blue-shift first and then red-shift by increasing the gap size between two T-shaped resonators continuously. The tuning process of red shift is linear. By changing the distance between two rod-shaped resonators, the TPM device exhibits red shift linearly. Moreover, TPM device shows polarization-dependent characteristic that the main absorption resonance can be attenuated from 100% to 0% by changing polarization angle from 0° to 90° of incident IR light. The resonance of TPM device has an excellent linear relationship with the ambient refractive index, and the sensitivity and maximum figure of merit (FOM) are calculated as 1249 nm/RIU and 21 RIU−1, respectively. These results prove that the design of the proposed TPM device is very suitable for the use of IR sensing, polarization switching, and refractive index sensing applications.

Based on the unique properties of optical Fano resonance and plasmonic-waveguide coupling systems, this paper explores a novel refractive index concentration sensor structure. The sensor structure is composed of a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide and two identically shaped and sized double-tooth ring couplers (DTR). The performance structure of the nanoscale refractive index sensor with DTR cavity was comprehensively assessed using the finite element method (FEM). Due to the impact of various geometric parameters on the sensing characteristics, including the rotation angles, the widths between the double-tooth rings, and the gaps between the cavity and the waveguide, we identified an optimal novel refractive index sensor structure that boasts the best performance indices. Finally, the DTR cavity sensor achieved a sensitivity of 4137 nm/RIU and Figure of merit (FOM) of 59.1. Given the high complexity and sensitivity of the overall structure, this nanoscale refractive index sensor can be applied to the detection of oil concentration in industrial oil–water mixtures, yielding highly precise results.

The metasurface refractive index sensor has a high degree of tunability and flexibility, providing excellent performance for high precision refractive index sensing applications. The metasurface absorber with metallic structure has been hindered in further sensor applications due to the inherent Ohmic loss of the metallic material. In this study, a dual nanorod metasurface structure based on semiconductor Si was designed, introducing a symmetry-breaking structure to excite dual ultra-narrow q-BIC resonance peaks with Fano line shapes. Both peaks are located in the near-infrared region, and multipole analysis shows that this strong field enhancement effect is induced by a magnetic dipole. Experimental results demonstrate the potential of this sensor to provide dual-channel detection while achieving high sensitivity and high Q-factor. We believe that this device exhibits outstanding performance and high practicality, providing a reference for the development and application of biological and environmental sensors.

Chiral materials are crucial components in the natural world, and the exploration of chiral materials hold significant importance in advancing areas such as chiral sensing, bio-marking. The integration of Bound States in the Continuum (BICs) in the design of chiral metasurfaces has emerged as a focal point in optical research, offering widespread research value and practical applications. The chiral dielectric metasurface proposed in this paper is formed by a combination of silicon nanorod, annular cylinder, and silicon dioxide substrate. Through selective detaching, we simultaneously break the structural mirror symmetry and in-plane inversion symmetry, thereby eliciting quasi-BICs and intrinsic chirality. This design achieves dual-band chiral responses, yielding a maximum circular dichroism (CD) of 0.979 and a Q-factor of 1517.5. By adjusting the structural parameters, the tunability of the structure is achieved. The study of the sensing performance of the metasurface resulted in a maximum sensitivity (S) of 270.6 nm/RIU and a maximum Figure of Merit (FOM) of 587.5. Additionally, By comparing the sensing performance with achiral structure, we verified the enhancement of sensing performance through chiral effects. The proposed chiral metasurface advances the practical application of chirality in fields such as biosensing.

In this paper, we design and demonstrate an all-fiber-sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor based on the Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI). It is constructed by splicing two no-core fibers (NCFs) and a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) between two single-mode fibers (SMFs) to obtain an SMF–NCF–PCF–NCF–SMF composite structure (SNPNS). A study of the effect of varying PCF lengths on the RI reveals that the shorter the length, the higher the sensitivity. The maximum RI sensitivity of 176.9 nm/RIU is attained within the RI range of 1.3365–1.3767 when the PCF length in the SNPNS structure is 3 cm. Meanwhile, the sensor exhibits a high stability in water, with an RSD of only 0.0019% for the interference trough over a duration of two hours. This proposed sensing structure offers the advantages of a large extinction ratio, small size, low temperature sensitivity, and simple fabrication, exhibiting a great potential in RI measurements.

An ultra-sensitive phase plasmonic sensor combined with weak value amplification is proposed for the detection of IgG, as a model analyte. Phase detection is accomplished by self-interference between the p-polarization and the s-polarization of the light. With the principles of weak value amplification, a phase compensator is used to modulate the coupling strength and enhance the refractive index sensitivity of the system. On a simple Au-coated prism-coupled surface plasmon resonance (SPR) structure, the scheme, called WMSPR, achieves a refractive index sensitivity of 4.737 × 104 nm/RIU, which is about three times higher than that of the conventional phase-based approach. The proposed WMSPR biosensor gives great characteristics with a high resolution of 6.333 × 10-8 RIU and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 5.3 ng/mL. Silicon photonic-based refractive index sensors are of great value in the detection of gases, biological and chemical substances. Among them, microring resonators are the most promising due to their compact size and narrow Lorentzian-shaped spectrum. The electric field in a subwavelength grating waveguide (SWG) is essentially confined in the low-refractive index dielectric, favoring enhanced analyte-photon interactions, which represents higher sensitivity. However, it is very challenging to further significantly improve the sensitivity of SWG ring resonator refractive index sensors. Here, a hybrid waveguide blocks double slot subwavelength grating microring resonator (HDSSWGMRR) refractive index sensor operating in a water refractive index environment is proposed. By designing a new waveguide structure, a sensitivity of up to 1005 nm/RIU has been achieved, which is 182 nm/RIU higher than the currently highest sensitivity silicon photonic micro ring refractive index sensor. Meanwhile, utilizing a unique waveguide structure, a Q of 22,429 was achieved and a low limit of detection of 6.86 × 10-5 RIU was calculated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
