Effective control of shale swelling and lost circulation using drilling fluid is considered the dominant strategy for maintaining borehole stability, especially drilling operations in deep oil and gas wells. In this work, a hybrid silicate that contains lithium silicate and potassium methyl silicate (PMS) was employed as a film-forming additive to reduce shale hydration and filtration loss in the high-temperature drilling fluid. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results revealed that a dense quartz crystal film coating on the shale can be formed in a hybrid silicate solution when the temperature exceeds 150 °C. The in situ-formed film on the shale surface with a thickness of 60-130 μm was composed of fibrous crystalline silica. Furthermore, the aqueous hybrid silicate exhibited enhanced hydration inhibition ability by preventing water invasion of the formation. Aqueous hybrid silicate with a concentration of 0.5-3 wt % lithium silicate and 0.1-0.2 mol/L PMS was first chosen to obtain the optimum concentration according to the hydration inhibition ability and film formation characteristics. The hybrid silicate was added into a drilling fluid formulation applicable in high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, and the rheological characteristics and filtration properties were investigated. The results confirmed that drilling fluids with the addition of hybrid silicate can mitigate variation of viscosity and yield point before and after aging at 180 and 220 °C. Besides, the filtration behavior was also improved by adding hybrid silicate into the drilling fluid. A lower filtration loss was observed at the concentration of 1.0 wt % lithium silicate and 0.2 mol/L potassium methyl silicate, which showed 63 and 50% HPHT fluid loss reduction for unweighted and weighted formulations at 205 °C and 3.5 MPa, respectively. In addition, the drilling fluid featured stable rheological and filtration properties and excellent shale hydration inhibition characteristics when exposed to high temperatures, making it a promising candidate for drilling in deep oil and gas wells.

The inflow profile is an important parameter to evaluate horizontal well productivity; however, quantitative interpretation of the inflow profile of the horizontal wells both accurately and cost-effectively is a common challenge faced by horizontal well production technology. The sustained-release chemical tracer is a new low-cost, long-lasting, and simple technique for monitoring the inflow profile in horizontal wells. In this study, a new type of sustained-release tracer is developed using bisphenol A-type epoxy resin as the polymer matrix and 2,6-difluorobenzoic acid, 3,4-difluorobenzoic acid, and 2,3,4,5-tetrafluorobenzoic acid as tracers. Meanwhile, the release mechanism and the influencing factors (chemistry of the tracer, temperature, salinity, and flow rate) of the sustained-release tracer are studied experimentally. The experimental results show that the release mechanism of the sustained-release tracer can be divided into two stages. The first stage involved the erosion process, in which the fluid gradually contacts and wraps the tracer, and the release rate is very fast. The second stage included the diffusion process, which is the diffusion–dissolution process once the fluid is completely wrapped around the tracer, and the release rate of this process is slow. The temperature is directly proportional to the release rate of the tracer, whereas salinity is inversely proportional to the release rate, and the fluid velocity does not affect the release rate. Finally, three kinds of sustained-release tracers are applied in the field, and a method to interpret the inflow profile of the sustained-release tracer is proposed. The result of application indicates that the sustained-release tracer developed in this study can efficiently monitor the inflow profile of the horizontal well.

Herein, we develop a novel method to synthesize lanthanide-functionalized carbon quantum dots via free-radical copolymerization using the methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer as a functional monomer and introducing a lanthanide complex to obtain the dual-emission fluorescent composite material FCQDs-Ln(TFA)3 (Ln = Eu, Tb; TFA: trifluoroacetylacetone). The obtained composites were fully characterized, and their structures were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Subsequently, a series of white-light-emitting polymer composite films FCQDs- (Eu:Tb)(TFA)3/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were designed and synthesized by adjusting the ratio of Eu(TFA)3/Tb(TFA)3 under different wavelengths. More significantly, FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 was selected as a sensitive probe for sensing metal cations due to excellent photoluminescence properties, revealing a unique capability of FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 of detecting Fe(III) cations with high efficiency and selectivity. Furthermore, the sensing experiment results indicated that FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 is ideal as a fluorescent nanoprobe for Fe3+ ion detection, and the lowest detection limit for Fe3+ is 0.158 μM, which is superior to many other previous related research studies. This pioneering work provides a new idea and method for constructing a dual-emission ratio sensor based on carbon quantum dots and also extends the potential application in the biological and environmental fields.

The use of distributed temperature sensors (DTSs) has become a common practice in real-time downhole monitoring for horizontal wells in oil/gas reservoirs. However, great challenges still exist in translating measured DTS data to flow rate profiles due to lack of robust inversion approaches, especially for multistage fractured horizontal wells (MFHWs) with a gas–water two-phase flow. In this study, a comprehensive inversion system combined with a temperature prediction model and an inversion model has been developed to interpret flow rate profiles for MFHWs with a two-phase flow by inversing downhole DTS data. The temperature model serves as a forward model to predict temperature behaviors of MFHWs. The inversion model is derived from the Levenberg–Marquardt (L–M) algorithm to eliminate the errors between the measured DTS data and the simulated temperature profile. By simulating the temperature behaviors of two-phase flow MFHWs, it has been found that there exist abnormal decreases in the ΔT/xf ratio (temperature drop/fracture half-length) of the corresponding fractures with the production of water. According to this, two effective methods to diagnose water exit locations for an MFHW are introduced. Two synthetic cases are presented to illustrate the application of the inversion system in detail. Finally, a field application is analyzed and satisfactory inversion results are obtained. The maximum inversion temperature error is less than 0.03 K and the absolute error of the inversed gas production rate is less than 9 m3/day. The interpreted inflow rates of each stage are close to the measured data as well, which validates the reliability of the proposed inversion system. The findings of this study provide a promising tool to interpret flow rate profiles for an MFHW with a two-phase flow.

To enrich an acid-tolerant methanogenic culture used as bioaugmented seed under acidic conditions, we operated four semicontinuous digesters under various conditions of pH decline for producing methane at pH 5.0. 16S rRNA amplification was performed to unravel the association between declining pH and microbiome succession. The findings demonstrated that a gradual decrease of pH, at a step size of 0.5, and a prolonged run time at each pH could achieve a suitable microbial culture, in which acetoclastic Methanothrix and hydrogenotrophic Methanolinea represented the dominant methanogens. In contrast, a sharp decline in pH could result in heavy loss of the acetoclastic methanogen Methanothrix, leading to a cessation of methane production. Hydrogenotrophic methanogens exhibited high acid tolerance, and Methanospirillum could thrive despite a sudden low-pH shock. Although Methanolinea required a longer time to enrich, it played a substantial role in methane production under an acidic environment.
