Context: Several text books and papers published between 2000 and 2002 have attempted to introduce experimental design and statistical methods to software engineers undertaking empirical studies. Objective: This paper investigates whether there has been an increase in the quality of human-centric experimental and quasi-experimental journal papers over the time period 1993 to 2010. Method: Seventy experimental and quasi-experimental papers published in four general software engineering journals in the years 1992-2002 and 2006-2010 were each assessed for quality by three empirical software engineering researchers using two quality assessment methods (a questionnaire-based method and a subjective overall assessment). Regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between paper quality and the year of publication, publication date group (before 2003 and after 2005), source journal, average coauthor experience, citation of statistical text books and papers, and paper length. The results were validated both by removing papers for which the quality score appeared unreliable and using an alternative quality measure. Results: Paper quality was significantly associated with year, citing general statistical texts, and paper length (p < 0.05). Paper length did not reach significance when quality was measured using an overall subjective assessment. This paper examines the cloud computing for education (CCE) literature, and analyzes if the research is developing scientifically with adequate empirical validation. All aspects of empirical investigations covered in the literature are shown as weak, hence, the necessary scientific development of CCE requires extending its scope of interest, and involving scholars synergistically to create and maintain a “common research agenda.” Background: A need to develop research on CCE has been recognized, and considerable efforts made to create an accurate understanding of the development of its scope of interest, in terms of supporting pedagogical developments and processes for better quality of studies. Research Questions: This paper has three main aims: 1) to evaluate the scope of interest in the literature for CCE with specific reference to pedagogy and educational processes; 2) to analyze the characteristics of papers, specifically empirical studies, from the various points of view of the daily improvement activities of teachers and learners at all levels of education; and 3) to identify eventual research gaps to consider and stimulate new topics or further investigations. Methodology: This systematic mapping study review followed a rigorous, replicable process to collect and analyze representative studies of CCE. Findings: Differences are found across geographic areas in applying CCE infrastructure and technologies in educational institutions; few studies address CCE’s impact on pedagogic processes. The effect of the substrate on the cyclic bending reliability of screen printed silver traces is studied in this paper. The silver screen printed test samples in this study were three different plastic films and three varieties of paper sheets. The specimens with line widths of 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 \mu\mboxm were subjected to cyclic bending, and their electrical behavior was monitored with dc resistance measurements in situ. In this study, a 20% increase in resistance was defined as the failure criterion, and the reliability of each test population was assessed by a statistical Weibull analysis. The results showed that the reliability of the traces was highly dependent on the substrate thickness in all the studied materials. The traces on a 125- \mu\mboxm-thick polyethylene terephthalate substrate were found to have the lowest characteristic lifetimes of about 1000 bending cycles, whereas the traces with the same geometry on polyethylene terephthalate with a thickness of 50 \mu\mboxm endured hundreds of thousands of bending cycles. Similarly, decreasing the substrate thickness improved the reliability of the printed traces on paper substrates. Consider several source nodes communicating across a wireless network to a destination node with the help of several layers of relay nodes. Recent work by Avestimehr has approximated the capacity of this network up to an additive gap. The communication scheme achieving this capacity approximation is based on compress-and-forward, resulting in noise accumulation as the messages traverse the network. As a consequence, the approximation gap increases linearly with the network depth. This paper develops a computation alignment strategy that can approach the capacity of a class of layered, time-varying wireless relay networks up to an approximation gap that is independent of the network depth. This strategy is based on the compute-and-forward framework, which enables relays to decode deterministic functions of the transmitted messages. Alone, compute-and-forward is insufficient to approach the capacity as it incurs a penalty for approximating the wireless channel with complex-valued coefficients by a channel with integer coefficients. Here, this penalty is circumvented by carefully matching channel realizations across time slots to create integer-valued effective channels that are well suited to compute-and-forward. This paper presents the evolution of the publication of microstrip antenna papers in the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. Both the number of papers and the topics of the papers are examined. Contributions: The underrepresentation of women in computer science (CS) majors has long been a focus of attention in many academic documents, the majority of them from the United States and Europe. There is, however, a lack of information about educational interventions (EIs) for women in computing in Latin America. The contribution of this article is to cover this gap and describe what researchers in Latin American countries have been publishing about the recruitment and retention of women in the CS field. Background: Many EIs targeting female students at different educational levels—K-12, undergraduate, and graduate—have been undertaken to increase the participation of women in computing in Latin America. However, descriptions of these activities rarely are included in international academic databases. Research Questions: This literature mapping addresses two main research questions (RQ) about the topic of women in computing in academic publications in Latin American countries: RQ1) what are the characteristics of the publications about women in computing in Latin America? and RQ2) what are the published interventions to recruit and retain women in computing in Latin America? To answer RQ1, six subquestions were created covering year, language, country of origin, document type, and professional track. Furthermore, for RQ2, two subquestions were created involving educational level and the use of software development with a female theme. Methodology: This investigation used the systematic literature mapping process. To achieve a broad coverage of papers, the following sources were included: Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, EBSCO, the proceedings of the Latin American Women in Computing Conference (LAWCC), and those of the Women in Technology (WIT) workshop colocated with the annual conference of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC). The included papers were published in the last decade (2010–2020) and written in English, Portuguese, or Spanish. Findings: The literature mapping encompasses 197 academic documents, 48.2% of which were written in Portuguese, 28.7% in English, and 23.1% in Spanish. The papers originated from 15 of the 20 Latin American countries. Brazil and Costa Rica have the highest number of publications overall. The documents describe initiatives to increase the participation of women in computing majors that cover the entire educational spectrum, from K-12 to graduate programs, but papers targeting populations in higher education have started to appear recently. The antagonistic behavior in the crowd usually exacerbates the seriousness of the situation in sudden riots, where the antagonistic emotional contagion and behavioral decision making play very important roles. However, the complex mechanism of antagonistic emotion influencing decision making, especially in the environment of sudden confrontation, has not yet been explored very clearly. In this paper, we propose an Emotional contagion-aware Deep reinforcement learning model for Antagonistic Crowd Simulation (ACSED). First, we build a group emotional contagion module based on the improved Susceptible Infected Susceptible (SIS) infection disease model, and estimate the emotional state of the group at each time step during the simulation. Then, the tendency of crowd antagonistic action is estimated based on Deep Q Network (DQN), where the agent learns the action autonomously, and leverages the mean field theory to quickly calculate the influence of other surrounding individuals on the central one. Finally, the rationality of the predicted actions by DQN is further analyzed in combination with group emotion, and the final action of the agent is determined. The proposed method in this paper is verified through several experiments with different settings. We can conclude antagonistic emotions play a critical role in the decision making of the crowd through influencing the individual behavior in the riot scenario, where individual behaviors are primarily driven by emotions and goals, rather than common rules. The experiment results also prove that the antagonistic emotion has a vital impact on the group combat, and positive emotional states are more conducive to combat. Moreover, by comparing the simulation results with real scenes, the feasibility of our method is further confirmed, which can provide good reference to formulate battle plans and improve the win rate of righteous groups in a variety of situations. Many real-world optimization problems involve uncertainties, and in such situations it is often desirable to identify robust solutions that perform well over the possible future scenarios. In this paper, we focus on input uncertainty, such as in manufacturing, where the actual manufactured product may differ from the specified design but should still function well. Estimating a solution’s expected fitness in such a case is challenging, especially if the fitness function is expensive to evaluate, and its analytic form is unknown. One option is to average over a number of scenarios, but this is computationally expensive. The archive sample approximation method reduces the required number of fitness evaluations by reusing previous evaluations stored in an archive. The main challenge in the application of this method lies in determining the locations of additional samples drawn in each generation to enrich the information in the archive and reduce the estimation error. In this paper, we use the Wasserstein distance metric to approximate the possible benefit of a potential sample location on the estimation error, and propose new sampling strategies based on this metric. Contrary to previous studies, we consider a sample’s contribution for the entire population, rather than inspecting each individual separately. This also allows us to dynamically adjust the number of samples to be collected in each generation. With the abundance of data, machine learning applications engaged increased attention in the last decade. An attractive approach to robustify the statistical analysis is to preprocess the data through clustering. This paper develops a low-complexity Riemannian optimization framework for solving optimization problems on the set of positive semidefinite stochastic matrices. The low-complexity feature of the proposed algorithms stems from the factorization of the optimization variable $\mathbf {X}=\mathbf {Y}\mathbf {Y}^{\mathrm{T}}$ X = Y Y T and deriving conditions on the number of columns of $\mathbf {Y}$ Y under which the factorization yields a satisfactory solution. The paper further investigates the embedded and quotient geometries of the resulting Riemannian manifolds. In particular, the paper explicitly derives the tangent space, Riemannian gradients and Hessians, and a retraction operator allowing the design of efficient first and second-order optimization methods for the graph-based clustering applications of interest. The numerical results reveal that the resulting algorithms present a clear complexity advantage as compared with state-of-the-art euclidean and Riemannian approaches for graph clustering applications. Cooperative co-evolution (CC) is an evolutionary algorithm that adopts the divide-and-conquer strategy to solve large-scale optimization problems. It is difficult for CC to specify a suitable subpopulation size to solve different subproblems. The population diversity may be insufficient to search for the global optimum during subpopulations' evolution. In this paper, an adaptive method for enhancing population diversity is embedded in a contribution-based CC. In CC, there are two kinds of subpopulation: the convergent or stagnant subpopulations and the non-convergent and non-stagnant subpopulations. A method is proposed in the paper to evaluate the convergent and stagnant subpopulations' contributions to improving the best overall objective value, which is different from the contribution evaluation on the non-convergent and non-stagnant subpopulations. In each co-evolutionary cycle, the new CC adaptively determines to select a subpopulation, which can make a greater contribution to improving the best overall objective value, between the above two kinds of subpopulation to undergo evolution. When a convergent or stagnant subpopulation is selected to undergo evolution, the subpopulation is re-diversified to enhance its global search capability. Our experimental results and analysis suggest that the new CC algorithm can improve the performance of CC and serves as a competitive solver for large-scale optimization problems. This paper compares three modern and two classical multiobjective optimizers (MOOs) as applied to real-world problems in electromagnetics. The behavior of sophisticated optimizers on simple test functions has been studied exhaustively. In contrast, the algorithms here are tested on practical applications, where the function evaluations are computationally expensive, making the convergence rate a crucial factor. The examples considered include the optimization of a narrowband slot antenna, a mushroom-type electromagnetic bandgap structure, and an ultrawideband Vivaldi antenna. Another popular topic in the literature is in comparing classical MOOs on electromagnetics problems. The modern optimizers chosen in this paper are state of the art and each has a distinct design philosophy. This paper introduces two unique MOOs to the electromagnetics community: BORG, an auto-adaptive genetic algorithm and the Multi-Objective Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolutionary Strategy (MO-CMA-ES), an extension of the popular single-objective CMA-ES. These algorithms are compared to the Multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithm based on Decomposition (MOEA/D), a Chebysheff scalarization algorithm, and two classical MOOs. This paper will study the behavior of these algorithms on problems in electromagnetics with a limited number of function evaluations using five distinct metrics and will provide useful guidelines and recommended optimizer settings. The collective intelligent behaviors of insects or animal groups in nature have maintained the survival of the species for thousands of years. In this paper, a novel swarm intelligence algorithm called the social group entropy optimization (SGEO) algorithm is proposed for solving optimization tasks. The proposed algorithm is based on the social group model, the status optimization model, and the entropy model, which are the main contributions of this paper. First, the social group model and the feedback mechanism between Leaders and Followers are developed to reduce the probability of local optimum. Second, the status optimization model is described to reveal the changing rule about the population behavior states, to support the conversion between different social behaviors during evolution, to promote the algorithm to optimize quickly, and to avoid local optimization. Third, the entropy model is introduced to analyze the entropy of social groups, the change rule of difference entropy, and to set the information entropy as behavior’s criterion of state optimization. In addition, the mathematical model of the SGEO is deduced from the group theory, matter dynamics, and the information entropy theory. The convergence and parallelism of it have been analyzed and verified theoretically. Moreover, to test the effectiveness of the SGEO, it is used to solve benchmark functions’ problems that are commonly considered within the literature of evolutionary algorithms. Experimental results are compared with those of three other state-of-the-art algorithms. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has two salient components: 1) a dynamical rule governing particle motion and 2) an interparticle communication topology. Recent practice has focused on the fully connected topology (Gbest) despite earlier indications on the superiority of local particle neighborhoods. This paper seeks to address the controversy with empirical trials with canonical PSO on a large benchmark of functions, categorized into 14 properties. This paper confirms the early lore that Gbest is the overall better algorithm for unimodal and separable problems and that a ring neighborhood of connectivity two (Lbest) is the preferred choice for multimodal, nonseparable and composition functions. Topologies of intermediate particle connectivity were also tested and the difference in global/local performance was found to be even more marked. A measure of significant improvement is introduced in order to distinguish major improvements from refinements. Lbest, according to the experiments on the 84 test functions and a bi-modal problem of adjustable severity, is found to have significant improvements later in the run, and to be more diverse at termination. A mobility study shows that Lbest is better able to jump between optimum basins. Indeed Gbest was unable to switch basins in the bi-modal trial. The implication is that Lbest’s larger terminal diversity, its better ability to basin hop and its later significant improvement account for the performance enhancement. In several cases where Lbest was not the better algorithm, the trials show that Lbest was not stuck but would have continued to improve with an extended evaluation budget. Canonical PSO is a baseline algorithm and the ancestor of all contemporary PSO variants. These variants build on the basic structure of baseline PSO and the broad conclusions of this paper are expected to follow through. The main goal in group testing is to recover a small subset of defective items from a larger population while efficiently reducing the total number of (possibly noisy) required tests/measurements. Under the assumption that the input-output statistical relationship (i.e., channel law) is known to the recovery algorithm, the fundamental as well as the computational limits of the group testing problem are relatively better understood than when these statistical relationships are unknown. Practical considerations, however, render this assumption inapplicable, and “blind” recovery/estimation procedures, independent of the input-output statistics, are desired. In this paper, we analyze the fundamental limits of a general noisy group testing problem, when this relationship is unknown. Specifically, in the first part of this paper, we propose an efficient scheme, based on the idea of separate-decoding of items (where each item is recovered separately), for which we derive sufficient conditions on the number of tests required for exact recovery. The difficulty in obtaining these conditions stems from the fact that we allow the number of defective items to grow with the population size, which in turn requires delicate concentration analysis of certain probabilities. Furthermore, we show that in several scenarios, our proposed scheme achieves the same performance as that of the corresponding non-blind recovery algorithm (where the input-output statistics are known), implying that the proposed blind scheme is robust/universal. Finally, in the second part of this paper, we propose also an inefficient combinatorial-based scheme (or, “joint-decoding”), for which we derive similar sufficient conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When solving constrained optimization problems (COPs) by evolutionary algorithms, the search algorithm plays a crucial role. In general, we expect that the search algorithm has the capability to balance not only diversity and convergence but also constraints and objective function during the evolution. For this purpose, this paper proposes a composite differential evolution (DE) for constrained optimization, which includes three different trial vector generation strategies with distinct advantages. In order to strike a balance between diversity and convergence, one of these three trial vector generation strategies is able to increase diversity, and the other two exhibit the property of convergence. In addition, to accomplish the tradeoff between constraints and objective function, one of the two trial vector generation strategies for convergence is guided by the individual with the least degree of constraint violation in the population, and the other is guided by the individual with the best objective function value in the population. After producing offspring by the proposed composite DE, the feasibility rule and the $\boldsymbol {\varepsilon }$ constrained method are combined elaborately for selection in this paper. Moreover, a restart scheme is proposed to help the population jump out of a local optimum in the infeasible region for some extremely complicated COPs. By assembling the above techniques together, a constrained composite DE is proposed. The experiments on two sets of benchmark test functions with various features, i.e., 24 test functions from IEEE CEC2006 and 18 test functions with 10 dimensions and 30 dimensions from IEEE CEC2010, have demonstrated that the proposed method shows better or at least competitive performance against other state-of-the-art methods. In this paper, the pinning process of pinned photodiodes (PPDs) is described by a new analytical model, assuming the PPD to be composed of inner and junction regions. There are two definitions of the pinning potential: maximum conduction band potential variation ($\Delta \varphi _{M}$) and maximum electron quasi-fermi level potential variation ($\Delta $ FP $_{M}$). The output of the previous pinning potential models is only an approximation of $\Delta \varphi _{M}$. In this paper, a comprehensive model is proposed in which both aforementioned definitions of pinning potential can be achieved analytically. The proposed model is a system of equations relating PPD’s main characteristics such as $\Delta \varphi _{M}$ and equilibrium full-well capacity to other main PPD parameters such as PPD spatial dimensions, impurity dopant concentrations, maximum inner region potential, and remnant carrier population at $\Delta \varphi _{M}$. As our field matures, evaluation of visualization techniques has extended from reporting runtime performance to studying user behavior. Consequently, many methodologies and best practices for user studies have evolved. While maintaining interactivity continues to be crucial for the exploration of large data sets, no similar methodological foundation for evaluating runtime performance has been developed. Our analysis of 50 recent visualization papers on new or improved techniques for rendering volumes or particles indicates that only a very limited set of parameters like different data sets, camera paths, viewport sizes, and GPUs are investigated, which make comparison with other techniques or generalization to other parameter ranges at least questionable. To derive a deeper understanding of qualitative runtime behavior and quantitative parameter dependencies, we developed a framework for the most exhaustive performance evaluation of volume and particle visualization techniques that we are aware of, including millions of measurements on ten different GPUs. This paper reports on our insights from statistical analysis of this data, discussing independent and linear parameter behavior and non-obvious effects. We give recommendations for best practices when evaluating runtime performance of scientific visualization applications, which can serve as a starting point for more elaborate models of performance quantification. This paper proposes a united-based imperialist competitive algorithm (UICA) for compensatory neural fuzzy systems. The original imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) comprises numerous empires in the population, and each empire comprises one imperialist and some colonies. Each country represents a feasible solution in the empire, and the more favorable solutions become imperialists, taking over less favorable solutions (i.e., colonies). In the ICA, each colony moves toward its relevant imperialist according to an assimilation policy. This paper proposes a UICA that focuses on this assimilation policy to explore the characteristics of the colonies. The assimilation policy consists of three major parts in this paper. In the first part, a colony searches for the best previous position of the colony. In the second part, the colony faces the best-so-far imperialist. In the third part, the colony moves toward the corresponding imperialist of the colony. This paper analyzes security problems of modern computer systems caused by vulnerabilities in their operating systems (OSs). Our scrutiny of widely used enterprise OSs focuses on their vulnerabilities by examining the statistical data available on how vulnerabilities in these systems are disclosed and eliminated, and by assessing their criticality. This is done by using statistics from both the National Vulnerabilities Database and the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures System. The specific technical areas the paper covers are the quantitative assessment of forever-day vulnerabilities, estimation of days-of-grey-risk, the analysis of the vulnerabilities severity and their distributions by attack vector and impact on security properties. In addition, the study aims to explore those vulnerabilities that have been found across a diverse range of OSs. The aim of this paper is to mitigate the problem of high power demand peak and load oscillations in the operation of a large population of thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) operated by model predictive control (MPC) at the TCL level. Two desynchronized MPC schemes are introduced: 1) adding random delays in reference signals and 2) extra penalizations on MPC objective functions. For characterizing and validating the proposed desynchronization MPC schemes, a partial differential equation (PDE) model is developed to represent the evolution of the operational states of the TCLs controlled by MPC in a population. The focus of this paper is put on the control of cooling fans in server racks of datacenters, whereas the proposed approach is applicable to other types of TCLs. Cold load pick-up (CLPU) has been a critical concern to utilities. Researchers and industry practitioners have underlined the impact of CLPU on distribution system design and service restoration. The recent large-scale deployment of smart meters has provided the industry with a huge amount of data that are highly granular, both temporally and spatially. In this paper, a data-driven framework is proposed for assessing CLPU demand of residential customers using smart meter data. The proposed framework consists of two interconnected layers: 1) At the feeder level, a nonlinear autoregression model is applied to estimate the diversified demand during the system restoration and calculate the CLPU demand ratio. 2) At the customer level, Gaussian mixture models and probabilistic reasoning are used to quantify the CLPU demand increase. As a well-known engineering practice, concurrent engineering (CE) considers all elements involved in a product’s life cycle from the early stages of product development, and emphasizes executing all design tasks simultaneously. As a result, there exist various complex design problems in CE, which usually have many design parameters or require different disciplinary knowledge to solve them. To address these problems and enable concurrent design, different methods have been developed. The original problem is usually divided into small subproblems so that each subproblem can be solved individually and simultaneously. However, good decomposition, optimization, and communication strategies among subproblems are still needed in the field of CE. This paper attempts to study and analyze cooperative co-evolution (CC) based design optimization in CE by employing a parallel CC framework. Furthermore, it aims to develop new concurrent design methods based on parallel CC to solve different kinds of CE problems. To achieve this goal, a new novelty-driven CC is developed for design problems with complex structures and a novel concurrent design method is presented for quasi-separable multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) problems. The efficacy of the new methods is studied on universal electric motor design problems and a general MDO problem, and compared to that of some existing methods. Additionally, this paper studies how the communication frequency among subpopulations affects the performance of the proposed methods. The optimal communication frequencies under different communication costs are reported as experimental results for both proposed methods on the test problems. Based on this paper, an effective self-adaptive method is proposed to be used in both optimization schemes, which is able to adapt the communication frequency during the optimization process. In this paper, we define a novel census signal temporal logic (CensusSTL) that focuses on the number of agents in different subsets of a group that complete a certain task specified by the STL. CensusSTL consists of an “inner logic” STL formula and an “outer logic” STL formula. We present a new inference algorithm to infer CensusSTL formulas from the trajectory data of a group of agents. We first identify the “inner logic” STL formula and then infer the subgroups based on whether the agents’ behaviors satisfy the “inner logic” formula at each time point. We use two different approaches to infer the subgroups based on similarity and complementarity, respectively. The “outer logic” CensusSTL formula is inferred from the census trajectories of different subgroups. We apply the algorithm in analyzing data from a soccer match by inferring the CensusSTL formula for different subgroups of a soccer team.

Note to Practitioners—The method described in this paper can be used to discover subgroups of agents and their behavior patterns based on spatial–temporal data of all agents in the group. The subgroups are formed by agents that behave similarly or complementarily for a certain task. The behavior patterns of the subgroups are expressed in the form of signal temporal logic statements. These are logical statements about the number of agents in the subgroups that are in certain states during a certain time interval. For example, if there are more than two blue agents in the region, then within 2 h, there will be more than three red agents in the same region. The behavior patterns inferred using this method can be used in: 1) analysis of group behavior while performing a task, e.g., in sports tactical analysis and 2) prediction of future group behavior under similar situations. This paper examines cultural drift with respect to occupational electrical safety. It poses the question of how the reduction in occupational electrocution fatalities over the past 40 years could present new challenges in maintaining electrical safety vigilance today, including the impact on electrical-injury-related risk perceptions of workers, supervision, and management. This paper discusses how low-frequency/high-consequence events pose unique challenges for safety management, describes advancements in conceptualizing the accident triangle, discusses how people process risk, lists methods for improving workers' understanding of their risk, and provides strategies to counteract cultural drift. Wafer-scale, CMOS compatible graphene transfer has been established for device fabrication and can be integrated into a conventional CMOS process flow back end of the line. In Part I of this paper, statistical analysis of graphene FET (GFET) devices fabricated on wafer scale is presented. Device yield is approximately 75% (for 4500 devices) measured in terms of the quality of the top gate, oxide layer, and graphene channel. Statistical evaluation of the device yield reveals that device failure occurs primarily during the graphene transfer step. In Part II of this paper, device statistics are further examined to reveal the primary mechanism behind device failure. The analysis from Part II suggests that significant improvements to device yield, variability, and performance can be achieved through mitigation of compressive strain introduced in the graphene layer during the graphene transfer process. The combined analyses from Parts I and II present an overview of mechanisms influencing GFET behavior as well as device yield. These mechanisms include residues on the graphene surface, tears, cracks, contact resistance at the graphene/metal interface, gate leakage as well as the effects of postprocessing. One solution to the limited range of battery electric vehicles is the provision of a public charging infrastructure to enable longer journeys. This paper describes a simulation model of a routing and charge point reservation system based on the charging infrastructure deployed in Ireland during early 2016. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are run using the Irish population density and an estimated trip length distribution. The results show quantitatively the advantages of a routing and charge point reservation systems on a country wide scale in terms of the number of electric vehicles that can be supported. The effect of charge point fault rates is also quantitatively assessed and shown to be a critical factor in public charging infrastructure deployment. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Triangle count is a critical parameter in mining relationships among people in social networks. However, directly publishing the findings obtained from triangle counts may bring potential privacy concern, which raises great challenges and opportunities for privacy-preserving triangle counting. In this paper, we choose to use differential privacy to protect triangle counting for large scale graphs. To reduce the large sensitivity caused in large graphs, we propose a novel graph projection method that can be used to obtain an upper bound for sensitivity in different distributions. In particular, we publish the triangle counts satisfying the node-differential privacy with two kinds of histograms: the triangle count distribution and the cumulative distribution. Moreover, we extend the research on privacy preserving triangle counting to one of its applications, the local clustering coefficient. Experimental results show that the cumulative distribution can fit the real statistical information better, and our proposed mechanism has achieved better accuracy for triangle counts while maintaining the requirement of differential privacy. With the advent of electric vehicles (EVs), issues connected to the electric vehicle charging scheduling (EVCS) problem, which is $\textsf {NP}$ -hard, have become important. In previous studies, EVCS has been mainly formulated as a constrained shortest-path problem; however, such formulations have not involved variables such as charging rates, traffic congestion, scalability, and waiting time at charging station (CS), that need to be considered in practical settings. Earlier research has also tended to focus on the strengths of particular evolutionary optimization algorithms like differential evolution (DE) or particle swarm optimization (PSO) over others or traditional mathematical programming methods, with only a limited study of hybrid approaches. In this paper, fast and slow charging options at a station are considered in the EVCS problem for practical use. In previous studies, EVs have been considered to have fixed speeds; however, in order to mitigate CS congestion and thus waiting times at CSs, dynamic speed control of EVs has been considered in this work. This work also investigates the scalability of different EVCS solutions. A hybrid approach using PSO and the Firefly algorithm (FFA) with a Lévy flights search strategy is designed and implemented to solve the EVCS. Also, different hybrid methods variants of PSO and FFA have been evaluated in this paper to find the best performing hybrid variant. This paper applies the principles of distribution locational marginal pricing (DLMP) to unbalanced three-phase distribution networks. We first propose a linear model for AC optimal power flow derived through a series of approximation and reformulation techniques. Then a scenario-generation algorithm is proposed to properly model the uncertain parameters in the linear model. Through a proposed No U-Turn sampler (NUTS) based algorithm, probability density functions (PDFs) of DLMPs are calculated. These PDFs provide statistical information about the locational and temporal price risks. By means of applications to two IEEE unbalanced test networks, the numerical results show promising performance for the proposed linear model and the NUTS-based algorithm in creating PDFs of DLMPs. DLMP price densities will be increasingly useful as distribution system operators seek flexible, low risk solutions from embedded generators and aggregators of distributed energy resources. Mobile edge computing (MEC) is an emerging computing paradigm that decreases the computing time and extends the lifespan of user equipments (UEs). In MEC, the computational tasks are offloaded from UEs to the base station (BS) at the edge of the network for processing. However, MEC cannot cope with environments where there are no BS or where communication facilities have been destroyed. In this paper, we study the problem of minimizing the energy consumption of UAV equipped with MEC servers as a mobile base station to serve users. The problem involves user offloading decision, UAV location and allocation with computational resources, and is a hybrid optimization problem with continuous and discrete variables. To address this problem, we propose a hybrid nature-inspired optimization algorithm (HNIO) and its version for discrete optimization, where HNIO incorporates mutation and population diversity detection mechanisms to boost its global optimization capability, and we design a probabilistic selection-based coding strategy for the discrete optimization version. The experimental study is conducted based on ten cases with different numbers of UEs. Comparing HNIO with several other state-of-the-art optimization algorithms, it is concluded from the Friedman and Wilcoxon’s test of the experimental results that HNIO shows better precision and stability in nine out of the ten cases with higher number of UEs. Frequency response analysis (FRA) is a widely accepted diagnostic method to assess the mechanical integrity of the active parts within a power transformer. Recent studies in the field of FRA have led to the standardization of its measurement procedure as described in the IEC and IEEE standards. However, the interpretation of FRA results is still limited to the analysis of the experts in the field. Using numerical indices is one of the methods introduced for the FRA interpretation, which quantifies the differences in FRA signatures. There are numerous indices proposed in the literature. However, there is no comprehensive comparison study to assess the sensitivity of these numerical indices against different faults. This contribution is an effort in this direction, which collects all indices on a single platform, compares and categories them based on their characteristics, to announce more appropriate indices as the standard ones. This paper defines the criteria for an appropriate index such as monotonicity, linearity, sensitivity, data-points dependency and index ratio. The evaluation of the indices is performed using 10 case studies from an experimental setup, molded transformer, and real power transformer cases. The results of this paper reveal that some indices stand out from the others in terms of performance and can be considered as the most appropriate ones that can satisfactorily calculate the changes between FRA signatures. Rapid urbanization, high city population growth rates, technological development, environmental impacts, and human wellbeing in urban areas have over the years become increasingly challenging concerns. These trends are related to the complex, multiple factors to be considered when evaluating “smart” cities, that is, municipalities that seek to improve residents’ quality of life by combining new technologies and environmentally sustainable practices. The above tendencies thus add to the myriad of indicators that need to be included in smart city assessments, whose intricacy hinders related decision-making processes. Based on the principles of multiple-criteria decision analysis, this paper seeks to integrate cognitive mapping and the Choquet integral to develop an assessment system that facilitates the evaluation of smart cities, which was named “SMART-C.” The research includes a panel of experts on smart cities who identifies the evaluation criteria and their respective interactions. The results of a real-life application of the assessment system developed in this paper are validated both by the panel members and a representative of the Lisboa E-Nova nonprofit association of the Lisbon City Council's Environment and Energy Department. These experts confirm that the proposed evaluation system facilitates making distinctions between cities according to how fully they develop “smartness.” The advantages and limitations of this assessment framework are also discussed. The population of electric vehicles (EVs) has grown rapidly over the past decade due to the development of EV technologies, battery materials, charger facilities, and public charging services. Many governments have implemented plans to ban fossil fuel vehicles considering the significance of EVs in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, due to the battery material characteristics and charger power limitations, the EV charging process requires more time than is needed to fill a non-EV with fuel at a gasoline station, causing drivers to experience range anxiety and impeding the promotion of EVs. Hence, the battery swapping station (BSS) model has been proposed as an alternative method. Recently, researchers have studied the BSS approach by proposing various operation systems and optimization methods, and BSS service operators have successfully implemented swapping at commercial and private stations. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art BSS literature and business models, where the BSS offers a recharged battery to an incoming EV with a low state-of-charge. First, four operation modes are presented: a single BSS, multiple BSSs, an integrated BSS and battery charging station (BCS), and multiple BSSs and BCSs. Then, the BSS decision scenarios are surveyed in relation to five operational areas, i.e., charging schedule, service policy, construction and planning, dispatching and routing, and power management, where the scenarios are compared in terms of the BSS mode, decision maker, EV category, number of battery types, vehicle to grid, and focus and objective.
