In the manuscripts dealing with thermoanalytical kinetics, many flaws, mistakes, and misconceptions are encountered repeatedly. In this paper, frequent flaws encountered in manuscript of kinetic papers are reviewed, mainly those originating in the false interpretation of the general rate equation, improper employment of integral isoconversional methods, conclusions drawn from the values of a single kinetic parameter, absence of error estimation and application of single-heating rate methods. Communicating research findings is an essential step in the research process. Often, peer-reviewed journals are the forum for such communication, yet many researchers are never taught how to write a publishable scientific paper. In this article, we explain the basic structure of a scientific paper and describe the information that should be included in each section. We also identify common pitfalls for each section and recommend strategies to avoid them. Further, we give advice about target journal selection and authorship. The conservation of the cultural heritage, such as old books, manuscripts, paintings etc. is particularly important, for both their artistic and historical values. These types of materials are often exposed to usage or storage conditions where efficient biodeterioration mechanisms take place. Deterioration of these materials occurs naturally as a result of aging, but it can be accelerated by poor storage conditions (humidity) that lead to fungi growth and negative chemically effects. Firstly, this work concerns with isolation and identification of a fungal species that infects an 18th century book. The identification was based on morphological analysis made by light and SEM microscopy and on ribosomal DNA loci amplification and sequencing. One fungal strain, Aspergillus versicolor, was identified as responsible of book biodeterioration. Then, A. versicolor was used as biodeteriogen to contaminate paper samples exposed two degradation processes (exposure to wet atmosphere and to acidic attack) simulating storage conditions of 18th century book. Secondly, microwave heating at three different temperatures (30, 58 and 63 °C) was applied on paper samples affected by spots originating from A. versicolor in order to evaluate the effectiveness of microwave in cleaning of artworks from fungi. Scanning electron microscopy and cellulose degree of polymerization were used for visual inspection and characterization of the paper samples before and after the treatments respectively. The best results were obtained by exposure of paper samples for few minutes at 58 and 63 °C, while the lower temperature (30 °C) didn’t inhibit A. versicolor’s growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Some years ago the authors of the present paper found in the Fondo Padoa lying in the Mathematical Library of Genoa University a manuscript of 11 pages by Alessandro Padoa with the title A proposito di un nuovo sistema fondamentale della geometria elementare. It seems to be ready for publication and contains also typographical instruction for printing. Other investigations on Padoa and his rôle in Peano's school led in a series of recent papers to a probably complete list of Padoa's publications where, however, the above mentioned manuscript is not present and, therefore, is likely to be considered an unpublished paper. It's a matter of fact that the whole of Padoa's scientific production has to be integrated by some works that he didn't publish. The unpublished paper under examination deals with the axiomatization of elementary geometry given by Mario Pieri in 1899 in "Della geometria elementare come sistema ipotetico deduttivo. Monografia del punto e del moto", where, as it is well-known, elementary geometry is based on the primitive notions of point and movement and on 20 postulates. Padoa agrees with Pieri's proposal to define segment starting from point and movement; he suggests, however, some modification to the original set of postulates and gives a (partial) proof of their independence. The unpublished paper reveals the interest of Padoa in this subject-matter and, in some sense, his idea of participating in the already consolidated field of research represented by Pieri's results. The database Profil has been set up to offer readers studying modern literary manuscripts a reference tool to identify watermarked papers. In the study of writers' drafts as in artists' sketches, the different kinds of papers used provide valuable information on the genesis of a work of art and watermarks, when they exist, are the best visible hint allowing us to identify paper. A multimedia database, with digitized images more precise than usual traced design, seems to be appropriate to register, visualize, and compare modern watermarked papers. Besides its usefulness for specialists, such a database bearing on modern manuscripts should also be conceived in a didactic perspective, as it is oriented towards literary scholars who are not particularly familiar with the history of modern paper. Brazilian journals play an important role in the local scientific scene. Despite its importance, Brazilian scientific production in Physics and Science education needs further articulation regarding the profile and impact of manuscripts. Therefore, our main goal in this paper is to monitor the trends in the Brazilian journals from 2013 to 2019 using scientometric tools. We analysed 3557 papers from 13 Brazilian electronic journals focused on science education and/or physics education, through impact and bibliometric metrics. The journals clustered into four very different groups regarding impact, and the individual time path could be drawn. The article presents information on various methods to comply with the overall style adopted for this journal. Authors are advised to consult previous issues of the journal to get a feel of the journal. Manuscripts have be submitted in triplicate. The text should be typewritten. The professional title and affiliation of each author should be given in footnotes located at the bottom of the first page. To avoid errors, all formulas should be typewritten. Complexity of notation should be avoided. Drawing and figures should be drafted in on a suitable paper. Lettering should be of uniform size and of such size and clarity that drawings are easily legible. Captions should be listed on a separate manuscript page. The list should be double spaced or triple spaced. Authors should provide a list of special symbols employed in the paper, for example, Greek symbols, script symbols, or sans serif symbols. If a special convention is used to show boldface symbols, that convention should be stated clearly.

This paper accounts for the diagnostic campaign aimed at understanding the phenomenon of black stains appeared on the passepartout close to the margins of Folio 843 of Leonardo da Vinci's Codex Atlanticus. Previous studies excluded microbiological deterioration processes. The study is based on a multi-analytical approach, including non-invasive imaging measurements of the folio, micro-imaging and synchrotron spectroscopy investigations of passepartout fragments at different magnifications and spectral ranges. Photoluminescence hyperspectral and lifetime imaging highlighted that black stains are not composed of fluorescent materials. μATR-FTIR imaging of fragments from the passepartout revealed the presence of a mixture of starch and PVAc glues localized only in the stained areas close to the margin of the folio. FE-SEM observations showed that the dark stains are localized inside cavities formed among cellulose fibers, where an accumulation of inorganic roundish particles (∅100–200 nm in diameter size), composed of Hg and S, was detected. Finally, by employing synchrotron μXRF, μXANES and HR-XRD analyses it was possible to identify these particles as metacinnabar (β-HgS). Further research is needed to assess the chemical process leading to the metacinnabar formation in the controlled conservation condition of Leonardo's Codex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To determine the rate at which abstracts orally presented at the ECR 2000 were published between 2000-2004, and to identify predictive factors of publication and differences between abstracts and subsequently published papers. Specific search profiles were devised to retrieve items from the Medline database. From 1020 abstracts originating from 39 countries, 479 articles (publication rate 47%) were subsequently published in 139 Medline-indexed journals, most frequently in European Radiology (14%). Country of origin statistically (P<0.0001) influences the subsequent publication of the abstract, Germany having the highest number of presentations (n=343) and derived articles (publication rate 54%). Abstracts presented by authors from the USA (n=21) had the highest publication rate (76%). Most papers were published within the first 3 years after the meeting, as original articles and in English-language journals. Both the study sample size and the first author frequently changed. Chest and cardiac studies had the highest publication rates (56%, both). In summary, abstracts presented at the ECR 2000 had a high publication rate in Medline-indexed journals. This paper explores the idea that scalar implicatures are computed with respect to discourse referents. Given the general consensus that a proper account of pronominal anaphora in natural language requires discourse referents separately from the truth-conditional meaning, it is naturally expected that the anaphoric information that discourse referents carry play a role in the computation of scalar implicatures, but the literature has so far mostly exclusively focused on the truth-conditional dimension of meaning. This paper offers a formal theory of scalar implicatures with discourse referents couched in dynamic semantics, and demonstrates its usefulness through a case study on the plurality inferences of plural nouns in English. The Regional Archive of Cusco in Peru guards valuable history collections with exceptional regional and international value dating from the sixteenth century to the present. Historical manuscripts are part of the identity of all people; they constitute a tangible cultural heritage that must be studied, valued, and protected. In this sense, the objective of this research was to identify the chemical compositions of inks and paper, with the goals of setting the background of their originality, identifying relationships between them, and glimpsing antecedents that generated degradation due to the compositions of the inks. This study is the first of its kind in Peru and reveals the chemical elements present in the writing ink, the seal, and the paper of five documents from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Duplicate in situ nondestructive analyses were carried out using a hand-held X-ray fluorescence spectrometer under ambient conditions in soil mode, configured with three sequential shots, and energies from zero to 40, 40, and 15 keV, respectively. The elements S and Fe were present as components of iron gall inks. Cu and Zn were less abundant; probably, they provided less corrosion and more color intensity to the inks. The minor elements Pb, As, and especially Ag in all manuscripts differentiate them from European inks of the same period. Additionally, the five documents reflect the same elemental compositions but with different concentrations. This could mean that writers used local raw materials and Spanish ink recipes. There are the richest collections of palm leaf manuscripts in Potala Palace of Tibet in China; they represent very precious cultural heritage with both literature and research value. The study reported in this paper has selected the original palm leaf manuscripts and the photocopies of palm leaf manuscripts in Potala Palace as investigation objects randomly. The investigation of damage status focuses on both media (palm leaves) and handwriting. Results show 11 kinds of deterioration of palm leaf manuscripts. They can be divided into three categories based on the frequency and destructiveness of deterioration: major, minor and occasional deterioration. The purpose of grading is to take targeted measures according to the degree of damage. Restoration and preservation of palm leaf manuscripts in the Potala Palace are relatively complicated because of minimal research on the restoration of palm leaf manuscripts. There are few stable and mature restoration methods that would be used for damaged manuscripts. It is very important to find out the most suitable method for seriously damaged palm leaves before making a restoration plan in order to prioritize appropriately and facilitate long-term preservation and utilization. This study analyzes and demonstrates the feasibility of the restoration techniques for the most damaged, thus laying a foundation for comprehensive practices of the preservation and restoration of the palm leaves in the Potala Palace. Many old manuscripts suffer from iron-gall ink corrosion, threatening our graphic heritage. Corroded papers become brown and brittle with age. The chemical reactions involved in this corrosion are relatively well known: they include both acidic hydrolysis and oxidation catalysed by free iron(II). Yet, a great variety of iron-gall ink recipes, including a wide range of constituents can be found in the literature and the visual aspect of old inks, can be very different from one inscription to another, even if they have been written on the same sheet of paper. This suggests that even if the free iron(II) plays a dominant role in the paper alteration, the contribution of other ingredients should not be neglected. For this reason, we explored the impact gallic acid may have on the corrosion mechanisms and in particular on the oxidation reactions. These investigations were carried out on laboratory probes prepared with paper sheets immersed in different solutions, all containing the same amount of iron sulphate, and different gallic acid concentrations. These probes were then artificially aged and their degradation state was evaluated by bursting strength measurements, FTIR spectrometry and Mössbauer spectrometry. All these analyses lead us to conclude that gallic acid has an influence on the iron(III)/iron(II) ratio, probably because of its reducing properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the publication of Francis Skinner's papers, which were lecture notes and dictations he had taken of Ludwig Wittgenstein in the mid-1930s. The papers were sent to mathematician Reuben Goodstein after Skinner's death, but were left unnoticed in an archive for many years. The collection includes various texts on different topics, providing insight into Wittgenstein's philosophy. However, the article questions the meaningful unity of the texts and suggests that their association with Skinner does not necessarily reveal anything significant about Wittgenstein's thought. The article focuses on writing high impact paper for building a professional career. Writing and describing the work in a clear, concise, but interesting manner, moves a paper from being good to being exceptional. If the same experimental work is described by two different writers, very different levels of manuscripts can result. Great science when written poorly can be a good paper or alternatively, average science when written well can be a good paper. Sometimes when reviewing a manuscript, it seems that authors even skip the basic steps like using the "spell check" features in all word processing programs or confirming text referencing to the numbers in the list of references.

The article describes the process followed in selecting papers featured in the 2004 European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) Special Issue of the "International Journal of Computer Vision." The papers were selected from 555 submissions to the eighth ECCV conference held in Prague, Czech Republic. The article focuses on several aspects of reviews for assessing the manuscripts. Good reviews are easy to deal with. Praise is readily accepted. Those that accept a paper without changes are pleasantly unexpected since such reviews are usually only a small fraction. In contrast, negative reviews can be both ego deflating and difficult. Rejection is hard to accept for anyone on anything, but that does not mean it is not warranted. Getting a manuscript published despite initial negative reviews is possible. Using a decision theoretic model of scientists' time allocation between potential research projects I explain the fact that on average women scientists publish less research papers than men scientists. If scientists are incentivised to publish as many papers as possible, then it is necessary and sufficient for a productivity gap to arise that women scientists anticipate harsher treatment of their manuscripts than men scientists anticipate for their manuscripts. I present evidence that women do expect harsher treatment and that scientists' are incentivised to publish as many papers as possible, and discuss some epistemological consequences of this conjecture. The aim of this study was to investigate the rate at which abstracts orally presented at the ESGAR 2000 and 2001 meetings were published between 2000-2004, and to identify predictive factors of publication. The abstracts of ESGAR meeting presentations were reviewed and classified according to organ, modality, type of design, country of origin of the studies and basic categories of diagnostic or interventional. The presentations were searched for publication in Medline-indexed journals using the PubMed server. The publication rates of the presentations, the time period between the presentation and publication, and the journal in which the article had appeared were investigated. An overall number of 109 publications were found originating from 276 presentations (39.5%). The median and inter-quartile range [IQR] between the abstract presentation and subsequently full publication was 18 months [1.0 -53.0]. The journal with the highest number of derived articles from abstract presentation was European Radiology (n=21, 19.2%). Retrospective studies were found to be more frequently published than prospective studies (p=0.001). The publication rate did not show any statistically significant difference between groups of other classifications. The publication rate of studies orally presented at ESGAR meetings was 39.5%. The reward infrastructure in science centres on publication, in which journal editors play a key role. Reward distribution hinges on value assessments performed by editors, who draw from plural value systems to judge manuscripts. This conceptual paper examines the numerous biases and other factors that affect editorial decisions. Hybrid and often conflicting value systems contribute to an infrastructure in which editors manage reward through editorial review, commissioned commentaries and reviews and weighing of peer review judgments. Taken together, these systems and processes push the editor into a role resembling censorship. Editors and authors both experience this phenomenon as an unintended side-effect of the reward infrastructure in science. To work towards a more constructive editor-author relationship, we propose a conversation, an exchange between editor and author in which value is collectively assessed (or constructed) as obligatory passage points in the publishing process are traversed. A call for papers by the Association of Medical School Psychologists for its official journal "The Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings," is presented.

Scientific journals receive an increasing number of submissions and many of them will be desk rejected without receiving detailed feedback from reviewers. In fact, the number of desk rejections has risen dramatically in the last decade. In this paper, we contribute to the literature by examining an editor's incentives either to issue a desk decision that is based solely on their imperfect private information about the manuscript's quality or to send the paper to external peer reviewers that better reveal its quality. In our model, without external review, the journal editor receives an informative but imperfect signal of the manuscript's quality. We focus on the case in which editors may differ in their decision accuracy, and highlight the consideration that even an editor with the best expertise and the best intentions may be unable to reach a perfect assessment of the manuscript's quality. In our baseline model, the journal editor is not driven by financial interests but is nevertheless impurely altruistic in that the editor has a reputation consideration that may be tied to authors' observational learning of the editor's decision pathway (i.e., the process to reach the eventual editorial decision, which may or may not involve external peer review). Also, the editor in our setting is imperfectly informed about the manuscript's quality unless they send the manuscript out to review. Our paper shows that high-ability editors tend to send fewer papers to external review than they should as a way to signal their ability. Even-cycle matroids are elementary lifts of graphic matroids. Pinch-graphic matroids are even-cycle matroids that are also elementary projections of graphic matroids. In this paper we analyze the structure of 1-, 2-, and 3-separations in these matroids. As a corollary we obtain a polynomial-time algorithm that reduces the problem of recognizing pinch-graphic matroids to internally 4-connected matroids. Combining this with earlier results (Guenin and Heo in Recognizing even-cycle and even-cut matroids manuscript, 2020; Guenin and Heo in Recognizing pinch-graphic matroids manuscript, 2020) we obtain a polynomial-time algorithm for recognizing even-cycle matroids and we obtain a polynomial-time algorithm for recognizing even-cut matroids. Text-based plagiarism, or copying language from sources, has recently become an issue of growing concern in scientific publishing. Use of CrossCheck (a computational text-matching tool) by journals has sometimes exposed an unexpected amount of textual similarity between submissions and databases of scholarly literature. In this paper I provide an overview of the relevant literature, to examine how journal gatekeepers perceive textual appropriation, and how automated plagiarism-screening tools have been developed to detect text matching, with the technique now available for self-check of manuscripts before submission; I also discuss issues around English as an additional language (EAL) authors and in particular EAL novices being the typical offenders of textual borrowing. The final section of the paper proposes a few educational directions to take in tackling text-based plagiarism, highlighting the roles of the publishing industry, senior authors and English for academic purposes professionals. This article explores the recent history of a corpus of manuscripts known as 'The Codrington Papers'. These relate to the administration of Sir Christopher Codrington, Governor of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century, his lease from the British Crown of the island of Barbuda, and the subsequent administration of the Codrington estates in Antigua and Barbuda. Originally held by the family, but deposited with the most local county archives' office, the manuscripts were sold by auction in December 1980, and they became embroiled within two dilemmas. The first of these was that the ownership of the physical documents became uncertain, and the second was that whilst the identity of the purchaser has still not been revealed, they are now housed within the National Archives of Antigua and Barbuda. The past 30 years have witnessed continued contestation of 'ownership' of the factual and intellectual content of the papers, and of permission to disseminate information, knowledge or analysis derived from them.
