This paper critically examines the centrally administered pre-service teacher preparation program for learning disabilities in India. With no equivalent Indian competency standards, this paper analyses components of the teacher preparation curriculum in the light of 22 high leverage practices (HLPs) outlined by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) as well as examines interview data from teacher educators to better understand challenges on the ground. Overall, the paper notes a heavy emphasis on theory over practice, with limited opportunities for practice. HLPs related to social-emotional and behavioral practices were minimally addressed in the curriculum. Finally, although the program was dedicated to serving children with learning disabilities, prospective teachers tended to get placed in inclusive settings and were required to work with students with a range of disabilities, highlighting the need for a program with a wider range of disabilities, not only learning disabilities. Research effort in special education often seeks explanation for children's learning difficulties in hypothetical cognitive processes that are assumed to underpin competence. This is particularly the case with reading difficulty. Despite disappointing empirical evidence about the significance of such constructs, repeated efforts are made to discover them. An argument is made here for the case that the reasoning that lies behind these efforts relies on an artificial distinction between performances (such as reading) and supposed faculties (such as memory or awareness). The construction of this distinction means that illegitimate cause–effect inferences are made about simple associations. The result of this sort of reasoning is a raft of assessments and special pedagogies whose benefits are, at best, dubious and whose ultimate effect is to exaggerate differences between children. The few existing studies in international literature about students with learning disabilities' postsecondary persistence and academic performances show varied outcomes. Rigorous research has been limited. Moreover, in Italy there is a dearth of public data on students' careers and clearly a deficiency regarding literature on this topic. To tackle this situation, propensity score matching techniques were used in this paper to compare data about persistence and academic success of students who reported a learning disability with those who did not, all enrolled in a large University in Northern Italy. Once potential confounders were taken into account, our findings indicated that students with an attested learning disability were as likely to persist in academic context as peers without any LD. However, for what concerns academic performances, the outcomes varied according to the measures being used. Although there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of the number of course credits (ECTS) earned, students with learning disabilities continued to lag behind their counterparts without disabilities concerning first-year grade point average achieved. The growing emphasis on inclusive education over the last decade has placed renewed focus on curriculum and the extent to which standard or different curricula should be enacted for learners with special educational needs. This paper explores the enactment process for a state-mandated, standard curriculum in Irish special schools. A two-phase, explanatory sequential mixed-methods approach to data-gathering was adopted. Phase 1 incorporated a questionnaire distributed to the principal of every special school in the Republic of Ireland (n = 133). Phase 2 consisted of a multi-site embedded case study with three special schools for children with varying levels of general learning disability. The findings illustrate how special education teachers modify the curriculum to make it more accessible for all learners and showcase the pertinence of curriculum design frameworks for framing those illustrations. The paper concludes by demonstrating the potential of a modified curriculum design framework for ensuring that learners with the most complex needs have better opportunities to access a curriculum with degrees of commonality to their peers. Information and Communication Technologies have transformed our lives in different social areas, facilitating interpersonal relationships thanks to technological tools. In the specific case of people with disabilities, Assistive Technologies (ATs) break down barriers and increase opportunities to become active members of society with equal opportunities. This paper presents a systematic mapping study that analyzes the current state-of-the-art of ATs proposed in the literature to support the empowering of people with disability. Specifically, this paper focuses on (1) describing a global vision of the scientific literature published in the last 20 years about ATs in the computer science field and (2) identifying research needs, gaps, and trends. For this purpose, an in-depth analysis of 389 primary studies is presented. The information obtained from the mapping process is also constrained. Concretely, 35 ATs versus 22 disabilities are compared, obtaining striking peaks for some disabilities described in the discussion. Finally, the findings show that several areas have been covered only lightly, revealing interesting future directions and challenges for junior researchers. • ATs have the potential to break down barriers for people with disabilities, enabling them to participate more fully in society. This implies a need for rehabilitation programs to incorporate ATs into their strategies to enhance social inclusion. • Given the transformative role of ICT, rehabilitation programs should focus on helping people with disabilities develop the necessary technological skills to utilize ATs effectively. • This work highlights the diversity of ATs and disabilities, suggesting a need for personalized rehabilitation plans that match specific ATs to individual disabilities. • Rehabilitation professionals should be trained to assess and recommend appropriate ATs for each case. This paper outlines the outcomes from three rounds of action learning sets with a charity that supports vulnerable adults and those with learning disabilities in supported living and residential care. The action learning sets focused on safeguarding cases and how they had been managed by 11 leaders at various levels of the charity (the team). The findings demonstrate that using a reflective process and the 'fishbowl' model of action learning sets in this context is effective in evaluating the actions taken by the team in the safeguarding case, but also the awareness of the perspectives – or lenses – the team had used when reflecting on the roles of the various stakeholders included. We outline the development and application of the Multiple Lens View Model (Table 1) which was designed during the research and which helps to analyse the perspectives the participants were taking when focusing on the issues in each case. We conclude with an exploration of how this charity can more critically engage in debate around assumptions made in safeguarding incidents. Inclusivity is an underlying principle of community arts, particularly for learning disabled and autistic people for whom the arts can create spaces of equity and inclusive participation. The Covid-19 pandemic required practitioners to find ways of replicating this sense of inclusivity through online delivery. This "digital turn" raised two recurring concerns. First, the accessibility and inclusivity of online activities; second, the quality of alternative digital provision. This paper examines these themes in the specific context of the Creative Doodle Book, which modelled inclusive online practice with learning disabled participants. Drawing on over 20 interviews with learning-disability focused community arts groups, the paper explores barriers to access, but also issues surrounding support and expectations. However, the focus is equally on the benefits once within an online "space", including new skills, widening networks, the development of inclusive capital and the opportunity to enable greater agency and self-advocacy both during Covid and beyond. Although some have attempted to appropriate elements of Montessori education to select groups of adults (e.g., for learning disabilities, second language acquisition, dementia patients), there have been no comprehensive attempts to validate the adaptation of this approach to the adult learner in general. This exploratory study attempts to provide a rationale as to why it is developmentally legitimate to adapt this pedagogical method to adult education. This is attempted through a consideration of the aim and purpose of Montessori education as well as Maria Montessori's concept of human development. The prevalence of mental illness among people diagnosed with severe learning disabilities is well documented, however limitations in verbal, cognitive, emotional and social skills are often used as reasons to withhold referrals for psychotherapeutic interventions within this client group. This paper describes the one-year art-therapy informed psychotherapeutic work carried out with Ioanna, a 61-year-old lady with a dual-diagnosis that took place in a Residential Unit providing psychosocial support for people with severe psychiatric disorders and/or learning disabilities in Athens Greece during 2018. Within the case-vignette the use of Plasticine as a therapeutic medium is presented. Concepts from psychodynamic and object-relations theory are also used as a framework for understanding the course of this therapeutic intervention. The contribution of sensory materials appeared valuable in this psychotherapeutic intervention with an apparently 'untreatable' institutionalised service user, helping to build a trusting psychotherapeutic relationship, and enable Ioanna to regulate some of her challenging behaviours. The use of Plasticine and play, and the development of a 'together and apart' game within a psychotherapeutic intervention, appeared to modify Ioanna's challenging behaviour, and improve her ability to relate and communicate with the therapist and her carers. Research into the use of Plasticine as part of an art therapy programme for people with severe learning difficulties, would provide a useful addition to the knowledge in this area. A review of the current psychiatric services in Greece and of what constitutes 'clinical progress' also seems necessary. This paper describes the one-year art-therapy informed psychotherapeutic work I undertook with Ioanna, a 61-year-old lady with a diagnosis of severe learning disabilities and mental illness. This took place in a Residential Unit providing psychosocial support for people with severe psychiatric disorders and/or learning disabilities in Athens Greece during 2018. At this time, I was also undergoing my art therapy training. The practice description in this paper describes the contribution of Plasticine as a sensory, therapeutic medium. Theories related to the relationship that a baby or child develops with its primary care giver are used as a framework for understanding the course of this therapeutic intervention. The relationship between learning disabilities and mental illness is well documented in clinical literature, however people with dual diagnosis or severe learning disabilities are often overlooked where referrals for psychotherapy are concerned, as it is believed that they cannot take part due to a perceived lack of communication skills. This paper describes how the use of Plasticine and playing a 'together and apart' game appeared to contribute to Ioanna's development of a trusting therapeutic relationship, the modification of challenging behaviour, and improved communication through the medium of Plasticine and play. Research into the use of Plasticine and the 'together and apart game' with this client group is recommended. It is also important to rethink and reflect on the provision of psychotherapeutic services within the current psychiatric services in Greece for this client group, and consider what constitutes clinical 'progress' from the client's perspective. Inclusive research has gained momentum internationally. However important critiques of this approach query whether inclusive research reinforces perceptions of deficit and contribute to exclusionary practices. This paper presents a reflection on the practices within an inclusive research group over the past decade, with a focus on decision making and support. The authors used thematic analysis to critically review minutes, workshop presentations and research reports. The findings indicate a shift in how the group works together; moving away from being guided by university supporters in the early years towards increased participation in decision making and ownership of the group's agenda by self-advocates over time although balanced collaboration across all members continues to be challenging. The article explains how the inclusive approach used by the group enabled self-advocates to not only conduct research, but to also critically review their own work. Research done together with people with learning disabilities, inclusive research, has become known worldwide. Some people wonder if teams that say they are inclusive are not really treating people as equal partners. Our group wanted to reply to these key issues as we think about how we work together. To do this, we looked at our meeting notes and agendas, reports, and training presentations over the past ten years. We looked at how we make decisions and the support we get. The group found that self-advocates and supporters now work as full partners. University supporters made decisions before. Now self-advocates decide the research topics, methods, and the report. In this article we explain how we work together and also what we think about the work we do. Even though we are happy with the way we work, we still struggle with how much work we all do. This paper explores the impact of policy changes and budget cuts on services and support faced by people with learning disabilities. Drawing upon collaborative research in England and Scotland and interviews with commissioners and support organisations, we show how landscapes of care and support are unstable and fragmented. We identify how pressures of time, resource and precaritisation in the workforce are creating 'debilitating landscapes of care' that further erode the capacities of both the people that work in the sector and people with learning disabilities. Some challenges that people with learning disabilities face in this context include finding appropriate local support, narrowing access as a result of reductions in benefit entitlements and identifying quality providers amid a complex array of private and charitable provision. Capacity to cope with these challenges is contingent on access to quality advocacy, supportive family, friendships, productive occupational learning environments and peer support, but these are not always available. The impact of COVID-19 has only served to intensify some of the issues we identify and the urgent need for a response. This paper reports on the novel methodology used in a participatory project called 'Inside the History of Learning Disabilities.' Through engaging learning-disabled people as co-researchers with valuable insider knowledge and expertise to share, the project sought to disrupt hegemonic discourses around both the history of 'learning disabilities', and of the lived experience of learning disabilities today. The overall objective was to make an important contribution to the growing field of interdisciplinary and emancipatory research about learning disabilities. The year-long project used a bespoke, two-step methodology in addressing this objective, combining archival research with a series of participatory focused workshops. Traditional methods and academic expertise in archival research and textual analysis were combined with less orthodox approaches to elicit insider knowledge about learning disabilities, which was then expressed in a range of ways. These expressions provide preliminary indications of how emancipatory and transformational research aims may be met. The paper makes a contribution to the discourse around new and emerging action research methodologies which seek to promote social justice. It describes away to not only recognise and challenge the oppression and exclusion encountered by disabled people, but to advocate for appreciation of disability and the insider-knowledge learning-disabled people have. In accordance with self-determination theory, this paper examined whether punitive parenting (child and parent reports) would predict psychological well-being (i.e., self-esteem, affect, life satisfaction) of children with learning disabilities over time. We analysed data from 300 German children with learning disabilities who were surveyed in Grades 3 and 4 and their parents (N = 300), who were surveyed only once in Grade 3. Cross-sectional results in Grade 3 demonstrated negative associations between children's perceived punitive parenting and all child well-being outcomes, whereas parent report of punitive parenting was not associated with any well-being outcomes. In terms of longitudinal relations, children's perceptions of greater punitive parenting in Grade 3 resulted in greater negative affect in Grade 4. This paper presents a study that investigated how students labelled as having learning disabilities experienced attributions from their teachers and the impacts of the attributions for these students' learning and interactions. The article explores the phenomena from an attribution theoretical lens. Ethnographic case study underpinned the research as it allowed us to fully immerse and to gain in-depth understanding of what was happening in one public school in Indonesia. We undertook interviews and participant observations, involving two students labelled as having disabilities (aged 10–11). The two key themes emerged: (1) the negative way being recognised by others and (2) being learning disabled marks a student as being different. The attributions assigned to students labelled with learning disabilities are circulated in the classroom and have significant effects on how these students perceive view themselves and participate in learning. To ensure full participation of people with disabilities in research, accessibility of the instruments employed is essential. This paper describes an exploratory research which included the adaptation of the AIR Self-Determination Scale and the Promotion of Autonomous Decision-Making Scale. The adaptation was designed to enable Hebrew-speaking young adults with physical disability, autism, psychosocial disability, complex learning disabilities, deafness or hearing impairment, or blindness or visual impairment, to complete a self-report questionnaire. It included extensive wording simplifications. In addition, original Likert scales were reduced, and symbols were added to improve accessibility. The forms were modified to a coloured format with more visible headings, including use of a screen reader and additional visual adaptations. The adaptation process included three phases: questionnaire adaptation, examination of face and content validity, and a reliability assessment of the final version. The process was informed by input from young adults with disabilities. We conclude that simplified language, symbols, and visual effects should be considered when adapting questionnaires for people with disabilities. 'Profound and multiple learning disabilities' ('PMLD') is a term used in the UK to refer to children with extensive impairments to cognitive development. The majority of children with PMLD are taught in special schools where specialist interventions are deployed to help PMLD children progress through the preverbal stages of development. Despite international calls for 'inclusive education' there has been very little research examining how mainstream schools provide 'naturalistic' opportunities for PMLD children to develop early communication skills. This paper addresses the situation by presenting a project that investigated how special school staff and mainstream school peers embodied different interaction styles towards a child with PMLD. The research utilised ethnographic methods including participant observation, vignette-writing, and on-going dialogue with teaching staff to develop interpretations of the child's interactions in context. A novel phenomenological lens was applied to the findings to illuminate how differences in social engagement were contingent upon the framing of the body as living or lived, whether interactions were normatively symbolic or intercorporeal, and how different modes of 'Being-with' the participant shaped interactions. This paper consists of a collection of individual learning and developmental experiences in the area of diversity and difference, based on the author's participation in the 'difference; identity; diversity' workshop, as part of the Tavistock Clinic's child psychotherapy training. There is a discussion here of how this learning took place, through a consideration of relevant theory, historical context, and clinical examples within the workshop's individual seminars. In the seminars, the exploration of all these components was further enhanced by individual and group reflective processes, which formed part of the workshop. The paper highlights how the facilitating environment that was created through the containing net of all these components within the workshop allowed for my individual exploration of and learning about both internal and external diversity. This kind of learning is not commonplace in child psychotherapy trainings, which is to the detriment of child psychotherapists' individual development, the training process itself, and the profession as a whole. Background: This paper draws on a longitudinal ethnographic study of music-making with "post-verbal" people: those with stroke, learning difficulties, acquired brain injury, dementias or autism. Methods: Using embedded observation, arts workshops, interviews with families and carers and focus groups with Music Leaders, the project traced how inclusive music-making happens with "post-verbal" people. It used post-human theory to illuminate and explore processes and benefits. Results: This paper fuses the practical and theoretical aspects of making music with post-verbal people, to understand both how it happens, and, what it signifies. It shows how post-verbal people use music to communicate and demonstrate their capacities, and analyses how those working with them use music to foster a sense of inclusion and belonging. Conclusions: By writing in collaboration across academia and community music practice the paper makes new and important contributions to both post-human thinking and capacities in learning, arts and health. In this paper, we present a systematic review of the factors influencing the social and emotional development of twice exceptional students. Eight studies among 331 published in English between January 2000 and January 2022 were determined through electronic databases. We conducted a systematic literature review by following the steps identified by PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses), including the processes related to data sources, search, data collection, eligibility criteria, data selection, and data analysis. Six themes were identified through the thematic analysis of these eight studies: self-concept, environment, friendship, achievement, labeling, and bullying. As a result of the analysis of the articles, it was seen that "achievement" affected the social and emotional development of twice exceptional students positively, while "bullying" affected the development negatively. However, other themes such as labeling, environment, friendship and self-concept were found to affect social and emotional development both positively and negatively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines a Revans led action learning / action research project in services for people with learning disabilities which took place between 1969 and 1972 across seven local authorities in the UK. It explores aspects of social and political history as the project unfolded, including the notable scandals in hospital and social care which occurred around the time of Revans' work, starting with the Ely hospital scandal in 1967. The paper identifies some of the lessons from the project and from some of the social history of the period which may prove useful to practitioners engaged in social action work currently. Recommendations from hospital inquiries are often repeated, and many from the 1960s and 1970s included themes which obsessed Revans at the time, such as the need for better communications, inter-disciplinary working and stronger leadership and coordination of services. Key lessons and themes which emerge from his own intervention and from social history include the need to equip staff with the tools of analysis to carry out their own service investigations and evaluations, more honest sharing of 'chronicles of failure', and encouraging a climate of openness in which the need to speak out and challenge what is already known and believed is more fully supported. Inclusive research with people with learning disabilities often involves audio-recording interviews. However, although barely acknowledged in the literature, participants may not understand that every word recorded will be scrutinised forensically, from which possibly erroneous conclusions may be drawn. This paper describes an alternative method: the 'Collaborative Personal Statement' (CPS), which eschews the standard practice of making data gathering an unobtrusive, hidden audio-recording exercise in favour of dynamic interactive note-taking, in which participants' notes are read back to them, to be clarified, edited and augmented as part of interview sessions. The resulting narrative is also reviewed and finalised to produce the CPS. The paper argues that this obviates problems around, in particular, member checking, as participants are not burdened days later with the onerous task of examining and amending lengthy verbatim transcripts, often replete with various unflattering disfluencies. Also, the constant refining and clarification entailed in producing the CPS helps enable researchers to better explore, understand and analyse participant perspectives and meanings. To put the method into a research perspective, a case study of its use is outlined – the creation of a 'living electronic archive' relating the use and impact of mobile technology on the lives of people with learning disabilities. A growing body of literature addresses why potential research participants decline to take part in research which could improve their and others' lives. However, a neglected field of study concerns reasons why 'gatekeepers' – professional or informal supporters through whom access is negotiated – refrain from offering the people they support the chance to consider participation. This paper draws on the author's recruitment experiences in a project examining the impact of mobile technology on the lives of people with learning disabilities; his previous projects with similar cohorts, and existing literature to explore factors that contribute to gatekeeper non-compliance. A framework-analysis of fieldnotes, interview data and other documents elicited three main interconnected factors: Protection of vulnerable people and of self; Institutional factors such as policies and practices; Research factors, such as a failure to see any beneficial outcomes. Tentative suggestions are made to help improve recruitment, although initial non-responses conspire against most potential measures (such as to liaise frequently with gatekeepers). The paper concludes by opining that the most effective policy is to make sure the research itself aims to improve the lives of participants, their peers, and the wider community – and that this is clearly outlined in any approach to gatekeepers. AbstractThis paper describes the process we undertook to develop a game-based approach to collect data for the diagnosis of dyslexia in children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old. A number of data collection approaches have been used previously such as eye tracking, MRI, EEG and game based approaches. Data collection can be a challenging task, as many of these approaches rely on use of specialized technology and in the case of MRI and EEG approaches, also require the presence of experts. In contrast, game based data collection is less intrusive and does not require the presence of experts or specialized devices. The content of the game in this research work was designed by identifying the problems faced by children with dyslexia in different age groups, designing questions to evaluate these problems and finally, validating the game design through two formative evaluations and with domain experts. This initial study and its statistical analysis showed a significant difference in the performance of children with dyslexia from children without dyslexia when playing the game. To identify and describe the aims, methodological approaches, and major findings of studies on the use of STT among secondary pupils (age 12–18) with learning difficulties published from January 2000 to April 2022. This scoping review includes empirical studies published in peer-reviewed journals and grey literature between January 2000 and April 2022. Searches were conducted in April 2022 in three databases: ERIC, PsycINFO and Scopus. In addition, related reviews were manually screened for relevant papers. Eight peer-revied studies and five publications of grey literature were found to meet the inclusion criteria; two studies employed experimental designs, four employed quasi-experimental designs and seven employed explorative designs. Six studies described STT as an assistive technology (a compensatory aid for poor writing performance); two assessed STT as an instructional technology to determine whether it improves overall writing and related skills (e.g., reading). Results suggest that STT may increase pupils' abilities to produce texts with fewer errors, provide help with spelling and improve reading comprehension and word recognition. To date, there is a paucity of high-quality research on the use of STT among adolescents with LD. The scoping review shows that very little research has been conducted on the use of STT for adolescents with learning difficulties in secondary education. Findings from the studies identified five areas of interest: writing related skills, text assessment, writing processes, accuracy of the technology, and participants' experiences. Findings indicate that writing performance among students with learning difficulties improves when using STT. Parents, teachers, and pupils report positive experiences with the technology, particularly for students with severe reading and writing difficulties. There is a great need for more robust research on the use of speech-to-text technology (STT) in educational settings, especially on its effect on writing skills Studies describe STT as either an assistive (a compensatory aid for poor writing performance) or instructional technology (aiming to improve learning in general). It is important that practitioners are aware of the different aims and possible consequences of introducing STT to learners with writing difficulties. STT provides both opportunities and challenges for writers with learning difficulties in secondary education. Findings indicate that writing performance among students with learning difficulties improves when using STT, yet inaccuracy of the technology was presented as one of the main challenges. Learning disorders are common neurodevelopmental conditions, occurring both idiopathically and in the context of other medical conditions. They are frequently comorbid with other neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions. Delayed identification and treatment have been associated with significant negative psychosocial consequences. The need for pediatric neuropsychologists to efficiently screen for learning disorders is likely to increase in the months and years following the COVID-19 pandemic, which has severely disrupted access to educational services, especially for children who also face racial and economic disparities. In this paper, we describe a consultation model that can be used to screen for learning disorders and can be completed using both in-person and telemedicine visits. Implementation may result in earlier intervention for struggling children, increase access to neuropsychological services without increasing wait times for comprehensive evaluations, and provide opportunities for collaborations with other health professionals (e.g., pediatricians, therapists, psychiatrists, and neurologists). This paper outlines the development of a formulation tool for use in child psychotherapy practice. This was developed in response to Child Protection legislation and practice, which was shown to be different across the four nations of the United Kingdom, and details a National Practice Model that is part of Scottish Government Legislation. The paper discusses the way that child psychotherapy can make a unique contribution in the treatment of a child, showing positive progressions in child well-being and in the functional aspects of a child's personality development. The paper uses a detailed case example to demonstrate the use of the formulation tool under discussion. By making art with clients, I have been able to understand how the joint activity is a fertile communication in which the countertransference is experienced and explored. In doing so, the joint activity mirrors the dyadic encounter between parent and child. In this paper, I discuss how working on a joint activity with a young person with learning disabilities enabled a robust relationship to form. The joint activity offered a shared experience on many levels; of being together, a non-verbal communication and felt experience within the here and now. Through this phenomenological approach I could meet the client on her terms at her level; in doing so, helping to address some of the power imbalance inherent when working with a young person with learning disabilities. Within learning disability services there is a need to protect and contain clients. Yet in doing so, we can start from a stance of limitations and infantilisation. The joint activity can offer this containing and protective space that is forged by and with the cooperation of the client. Plain-language summary This paper argues that making art with or alongside a client in art therapy is a form of non-verbal communication that depends on the therapist's understanding of the client's current situation. The back and forth process of working together on a joint activity is much like a conversation as one mark responds to another. By working together, past traumas and experiences can be worked through in a new and positive way that enables the client to have a better understanding of their own emotional well-being. This paper provides a qualitative meta-analysis of the literature on the use of serious games to assist learners with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It aims to identify the research trends and the possible directions for future research. The study begins with a preliminary online search and selection of a sample of articles to identify the main categories of disabilities. This is followed by a detailed analysis of a selection of articles chosen on the basis of their relevance, year of publication and representation of the studies carried out in this field. The preliminary analysis of articles published in recent years showed that the majority of the articles dealt with the use of digital games to support learners with intellectual disabilities. The findings revealed reports of participants' higher engagement levels and motivation when learning with serious games, in addition to improved competence or performance in domains of language learning and numeracy. The concept of moderate learning difficulties (MLD) is not clearly understood in its definition and in its general use. Nevertheless, as a distinct area of special educational needs (SEN) this category has constituted about a quarter of all of those pupils identified as having SEN in England. This paper reports the analysis of findings from an ongoing research project in an attempt to improve understanding of the MLD category. Pupils (aged 12–14 years) identified as having MLD were compared with others in the same classes identified as having either specific learning difficulties or low attainments in terms of literacy, reasoning and dispositional measures. The paper shows that the label of MLD is often used in an over-generalised way in schools and that although there are some differences in reasoning and literacy abilities between those identified as having MLD and those who have not, no such differences were found in learner self-concept and in pupils’ attitudes to education and learning questioning the current definition of MLD which includes associated low self-esteem. In this paper we introduce Ashworth's lifeworld fractions as a methodological framework for inclusive research with autistic people 'with profound learning disabilities'. We first define the fractions and then evaluate their potential for enabling research within the 'third space' of inclusive research. Fundamental to the third space is the inclusion of the social and support circles of people with profound learning disabilities within research. Using the example of a recent study we illustrate how the fractions are a useful enabler of this. We conclude by suggesting that a key value of the fractions is in how they take the research collective beyond the elements of experience that most obviously confront them to consider its full breadth and effects. We argue too that the fractions support the management of the collation and analysis of the copious amounts of data that are generated through qualitative research. We conclude by offering a new and critical dimension to the fractions through presenting them as a means through which those involved in the third space – autistic people, their social and support circles, and researchers – can come to more emic understandings of lived experience. The implementation of prereferral models was being discussed in educational literature as early as 1979. Over the past decade, schools in the United States have begun to adopt prereferral models to meet multiple goals, such as reducing inappropriate referrals to special education, supporting students who face academic and behavioral challenges, identifying students with learning disabilities (LDs), and increasing the efficacy of general education teachers in working with all students, including those with disabilities, in general classroom settings. This paper compares the backgrounds, philosophies, and components of different developed prereferral models before and after the reauthorization of the Individual with Disabilities Educational Act (IDEA) of 2004. This discussion divides the emerging prereferral models in educational literature into three main models, two of which – the consultation model and the problem-solving model – were commonly implemented by schools before reauthorization of the IDEA. The third model is the tiered-support model, various forms of which became widespread after the reauthorization of the IDEA in 2004. This article describes findings from a pilot study for a new art therapy intervention designed for clients attending an Adult Learning Disability Service. The intervention consisted of an art therapy and mindfulness group for clients, for 90 min per week over an initial 6–8 week period, with the aim of improving group members' resilience and ability to cope with difficult life experiences. Clients completed questionnaires about their experience of the group sessions and a thematic analysis was conducted to identify three main themes. The results suggest that the clients who received this intervention experienced improvements in their clinical presentation as well as in their quality of life, an increase in joy and positive wellbeing, and a decrease in low mood and social anxiety. The field of intellectual disability is an important field of social work practice in both Britain and Australia. Yet this is also a multidisciplinary field in which the role of social workers, particularly women, in contributing to the lives of people with intellectual disability and their families has largely gone unnoticed. Focusing on England and Victoria, Australia in particular, this paper uses oral history interviews with long-standing social workers and documentary evidence including government reports and newspaper coverage to explore the similarity in the roles of social workers in intellectual disability. It covers the period between the beginning of social work in this field, which in the case of Britain was 1929 and in Victoria 1952, until the end of the 1990s. Work with families is identified as being central in both countries, as well as mediating relationship between institutions and services, families, and the community, and service development and advocacy. Visual methods are often used in social science because of the potential for inclusivity and accessibility. In disability studies in particular, inclusive research is widely viewed as best practice and visual methods are often considered more accessible than traditional research methods. However, visual methods can encounter challenges at the stage of analysis: it is at this stage that either rigour or inclusivity are most likely to be compromised. This paper focuses on the use of interpretive engagement to overcome such challenges in the analysis of photovoice findings. Drawing on experience of using this method of analysis with 16 people with learning disabilities in the England, we first briefly outline some of the tensions that can emerge when attempting to improve inclusion in research, before going on to describe the analytic process used as way of addressing some of these tensions. The inclusiveness of interpretive engagement contributed to the rigour and meaningfulness of the findings by revealing layers of meaning which gave access to a multi-dimensional understanding of the phenomenon in question. This paper questions current approaches to youth work practice and evaluation in England and suggests that current practices based on tick-box targets and outcomes compromise the core values of the profession. The targeting of certain groups of young people is an over-simplistic and stigmatising process that does not reflect what is meaningful about youth work. It also marks a step away from informal education, which has traditionally provided the theoretical underpinning to youth work in England. Youth work in England needs to develop a stronger evidence base as a process based on informal education to be given consideration by policy-makers and funders. In the second half of the paper, we introduce social pedagogy—a form of theory and practice developed in wider Europe—and outline its values and approach. We argue that this approach may fit with the values of informal education and that it may contribute to offering an evidence base for a values-centred alternative to the currently dominant articulations of youth work. Scholars have paid surprisingly little attention to the role of the state in the provision of accommodation for the learning disabled before the twentieth century. This paper will address this lacuna by investigating the fate of pauper 'idiots' in Victorian England. As this paper will illustrate, 'idiots' and 'imbeciles' fell under two overlapping jurisdictions-the Poor Law Board and the Lunacy Commission. The tension between the two systems led to a call for a different type of asylum-a hybrid of the county asylums and pauper workhouses-that was eventually constituted under the authority of the Metropolitan Asylums Board in 1867. This paper illuminates the local negotiations which resulted in the congregation of 'idiots' and 'imbeciles' in Poor Law Union workhouses, and explores the nineteenth-century ideology of 'moral treatment', which devalued the learning disabled as 'incurable' and thus unworthy of expensive, specialised state provision. This paper reviews the history of parent advocacy in the UK on behalf of and with people with learning disabilities since the mid-twentieth century and reflects on the role of the academy in illuminating and documenting its story. It argues that parent advocacy has flourished at times of change and challenge, and has seen a revival since austerity began to bite. In the twenty-first century parent advocacy has mutated into working with, rather than for people with learning disabilities, a development to be welcomed, given the cuts to services, and the impact of 'welfare reform'. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was passed in 2006 and came into force in 2008. It sets out a number of core values, including dignity, individual autonomy, non-discrimination, participation and community inclusion. Although the CRPD has been recognised as an important step forward by many disabled people and their supporters and provides the foundation for building a good life, the author argues that it does not necessarily equate with it. The underpinning Western values of choice, independence and control are important, but leave out groups of marginalised people for whom these goals may not be achievable. They also present challenges and dilemmas for those involved in supporting/caring roles. In this paper, the author reflects on the implications of the CRPD for the lives of people with learning disabilities, in particular those with profound needs and explores whether it provides a genuinely coherent framework for an inclusive society. The assumption that educational policies and practices in the global North are viable in the global South has promoted a universal template for inclusive education, or Education For All. In India, lived realities do not conform to this universal template, resulting in the emergence of low-income English language learners who are being labeled as learning disabled. Service user and carer engagement is a foundational requirement of social work education. Despite this, questions remain about how diverse experiences are represented and who might be excluded from involvement. This paper focusses on one group of people who it is suggested are excluded from involvement, people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. Evidence is presented which demonstrates the extent to which this group have been marginalised and excluded from processes of involvement. The paper then provides a case study of one universities’ experience of developing work in this area, when a man with profound and multiple learning disabilities was commissioned to design and deliver specialist teaching for a group of qualifying social work students. We argue that the main barrier to inclusive involvement for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities is the attitudes and assumption of others about what they are capable of. This paper examines a type of partnership that is formed to deliver transition support services for young people with learning disabilities. What makes transition partnerships instructive for partnership research is that they are constituted between statutory and non-statutory agencies across a wide range of service sectors. Transition for this population group with its specific needs has often been described as a ‘wicked problem’. The paper suggests that a split between strategic and operational levels of partnership work adversely affects policy implementation and contributes to the inability of stakeholders to bring about improved outcomes for service users. This paper considers the complex task of working with adults with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour in a care home and the impact on relationships within the staff group and wider organisation. Examples are drawn from an organisational consultation to a home with a history of disputes, grievances and sick leave. The metaphor of ghosts is used to explore the processes by which the residents' own traumatic histories come to be played out by the care home staff. The paper concludes that an increased understanding of organisational processes in the residential care sector may help staff form more helpful relationships with service users and hence lead to better outcomes. The ability to work interprofessionally is widely regarded as essential to professional education and training for social work. The changing contexts of social work practice and the requirement for integrated working are regular reminders of the need for social work students to develop collaborative competence. Guidance preceding the development of the social work degree emphasised that social work students should undertake specific learning and assessment in partnership working and information sharing. This suggests that aspects of interprofessional education are relevant to the teaching and development of social work students if graduates are to successfully engage in complex practice. This paper seeks to identify the competencies needed for successful collaboration. It then draws on evaluative research of joint training programmes in learning disability nursing and social work in England to discuss the unique experiences and perspectives of graduates whose social work training was exceptionally interprofessional. The paper will discuss how some of the findings from this research can indicate lessons for promoting collaborative competence in singly trained social work students.
