The Regional Science Association was founded 50 years ago in December 1954; however,the institutional origins of the field were much earlier, perhaps when Walter Isard began his graduate studies in economics at Harvard University. This article briefly traces the history of the field of regional science and its association from those beginnings to the present. The focus of the article is the evolution of the association as an institution, and some of its major contributors, and to a much lesser extent, on the scope and scholarly content of the field. This paper presents a historical overview of the Interamerican Society of Psychology, which was founded on December 17, 1951, in Mexico City. Firstly, the historical circumstances of the foundation period are presented, as well as the people who made this organization possible, and the state of psychology on the American continent at that time. Secondly, the most important activities that the Interamerican Society of Psychology has developed during its 60 years are mentioned, such as the publication of books and scientific journals, the creation of several task forces and the Interamerican Congresses of Psychology. Agent-based modelling and simulation (ABMS) has been used by researchers from a variety of disciplines to study a range of phenomena. At present, ABMS is vastly underutilized in organizational psychology, yet we believe it offers a range of potential benefits that are currently not well catered for by existing tools. In this paper, we introduce ABMS and explain how it differs from current approaches. We illustrate the potential advantages of the approach through a range of examples and through the identification of opportunities in the field of organizational psychology. We also highlight potential limitations of the ABMS approach, and discuss the circumstances under which it may make a worthwhile contribution. The article presents member-related news and announcements involving the Science, Technology and Environmental Politics organized section (STEP) of the American Political Science Association (APSA) in 2007. The purpose of STEP is to promote research and teaching on the political dimensions of issues in science, technology and environmental policy. Some of the activities sponsored by the section include a newsletter and syllabi available through its website and annual awards for outstanding scholarly works in this area of study. However, the Arizona State University (ASU) is inviting applications for a doctoral degree program in the Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology (HSD) to begin in Fall 2008.

This paper has benefited greatly from the time that I have recently spent working on the Committee of Section H of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. This special issue of the journal "Statistica Neerlandica" deals with various types of statistical and methodological problems encountered when applying multilevel and other types of random-coefficients models in social and behavioral science research. Six out of the seven papers were presented at the 2002 Autumn Meeting of the Social Science Section of the Netherlands Society for Statistics and Operations Research. In social science research, data are often hierarchically structured. Multilevel modeling techniques account for dependencies between observations within groups, as well as make it possible to investigate the importance of individual and group characteristics in the explanation of individual-level outcome variables.

This article presents information related to a business meeting. The annual AKD business meeting was held on August 31, 1986, at the New York Hilton. Jerry Michel, scholar at the Memphis State University and AKD President presided the meeting. Those present were: Candace Clark, Helen Clarke, Al Clarke, Ken Davidson, David Demo, Marie Fuller, Rose Helper, Mark Butter, Lyn Lofland, Mike Malec, Betty Maynard, Annabelle Motz, Wayne Seelbach, Don Shoemaker, Jim Skipper, Jim Williams, Kenneth Wilson and Donna Darden. In addition to normal items of business, the following announcements and decisions were made at the meeting. The winners of the 1986 paper competition were as follows First prize: Tracey Watson, Skidmore College, Second prize: Jane Melada, Montclair State and third prize: William Axinn, Cornwell. Watson's paper, "Women Athletes and Athletic Women: The Dilemmas and Contradictions of Managing Incongruent Identities," will be published in the journal "Sociological Inquiry." The Council voted to name Dennis Peck, scholar at the University of Alabama-Bitmingham, as new editor of the journal.

The relationship between interpersonal trust and membership in voluntary associations is a persistent research finding in sociology. What is more, the notion of trust has become a central issue in current social science theorizing covering such diverse approaches as transaction costs economics or cognitive sociology. In different ways and for different purposes, these approaches address the role of voluntary organizations, although, as this paper argues, much of this thinking remains sketchy and underdeveloped. Against an empirical portrait of this relationship, the purpose of this paper is to assess such theorizing. We first set out to explicate major approaches to trust in economics, sociology and political science, using the non-profit or voluntary organization as a focal point. We then examine the various approaches in terms of their strengths and weaknesses, and, finally, identify key areas for theoretical development. The materials for this paper come from extensive archival research and oral histories conducted from 1973 to 1985. The materials are used to show how and why the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) and related organizations developed as they did. I argue that these organizations developed in four principal contexts: first, the employment crises of social scientists during the thirties; second, the central contradiction between social scientists' selfperception as "value free" and their perceived responsibility to respond to the economic and cultural crises of the period: third, the relative positions of various leftist political groups of the time, their sectarian strife, and the influence of the Popular Front: and fourth, connections to power elites during World War II.

This article presents an update on Policy Studies Organization (PSO) in the U.S. PSO holds concurrent meetings with the Southern Political Science Association (SPSA) in New Orleans, Louisiana every January, with the American Association for the Advancement of Science every February. PSO established and raises funds for three endowments that are held in permanent trust by the American, Midwest, and SPSA. It has also established the Walter E. Beach Fellows Endowment with the SPSA to enable foreign scholars to attend the annual meetings of the Southern.

In this paper we analyse boards of directors as workgroups, i.e. groups of people that perform one or more tasks within an organisational context. Building on previous studies, we developed a model that relates group's social-psychological processes to three different board tasks: service, monitoring and networking. We tested our model through a survey on 301 large manufacturing firms in Italy. Our findings support the idea that (a) process variables and, to a limited extent, demographic variables significantly influence board task performance; (b) board processes have a different impact on each specific board task; (c) board task performance varies depending upon firm and industry characteristics. De Leon and Steelman (2001) addressed three deficiencies in public policy programs. This paper focuses on the first of these, arguing that public policy students can and should be exposed to a comprehensive classification of types of ethical analysis. It then briefly addresses the two other deficiencies, again with recourse to recent interdisciplinary scholarship. This paper describes an attempt to construct a typology of progressive Catholics using data obtained from a survey of the delegates to the 1980 National Pastoral Congress of English Catholics eighteen months after the Congress. Progressivism is regarded as the espousal of the new elements of religious ideology and pastoral emphases which have emerged since the Second Vatican Council.
Following earlier attempts using smallest space analysis and factor analysis, this paper describes the use of cluster analysis to identify distinct groups of individuals and discriminant analysis to identify the separate dimensions which distinguish between the clusters. Seven dusters ware identified in terms of six discriminant functions. An analysis of the social and religious characteristics of the seven types indicated that there was no simple unidimensional scale of progressivism. The paper concludes with some suggestions for a more comprehensive classification of progressive Catholics which might be explored in the case of other or more representative samples.
This paper set out to construct a typology of progressive Catholics using data from a survey of delegates to the National Pastoral Congress. Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) 50th anniversary was celebrated in Washington, D.C, on August 21, 1986, just before the 94th annual meeting of the American Psychological Association. It was marked by a series of panels devoted to the history of the society and was capped by a musical comedy that gave still another version of SPSSI story. Following the anniversary meeting, various SPSSI members asked about the possibility of publishing those presentations that had been written out. And although "Journal of Social Issues" had just recently published a commemorative number-"50 Years of Psychology and Social Issues" (Harris, Unger, & Stagner, 1986)-the feasibility of such an additional stocktaking has been promised.

In the 1990s, seed craftwork became an important practice among Sateré‐Mawé women in Manaus, Brazil, following initiatives for their political and territorial organisation in the city. This article ethnographically explores how the production of seed necklaces mobilises an extensive circuit of people, plants, skills and knowledges that challenges strict divides between Amazonian cities and villages. In the city, seed variety reflects the ability of indigenous women to maintain multiple and multilocal relationships. Following the paths of the seeds, this article discusses how Sateré‐Mawé groups produce fluid spatialities and manage relations with human and non‐human 'others' between urban and forest areas. The article discusses the historical absence of the study of religion from mainstream social science and public policy. One indication that sociology of religion has stood on the sidelines of mainstream sociology is the fact that in the 96 years of its existence, only one of 97 American Sociological Association presidents could be characterized as having a central interest in the study of religion, namely, J. Milton Yinger in 1977. The positivistic stance of social science in the 20th century also introduced an anti-religious bias into both research and the organization of sociology departments in the U.S. The 1980s and 1990s brought a number of changes, both substantive and institutional, that prompted more attention to the topic of religion and brought social scientists studying religion into closer contact with social scientists in other subdisciplines. Furthermore, developments in four theoretical areas in the social sciences catapulted religious issues into mainstream dialogues: globalization, social movements, civic culture and rational choice theory. The worldwide rise of fundamentalism and its impact on political regimes, family structures, demographic patterns and education systems around the world was reflected in international policy forums. It is evident that publishing in one of the mainstream journals is both cause and effect of the greater acceptance by the sociological community of research concerning religion.

The article discusses the separation of church and state in the U.S. It is stated that the issue of separation of church and state has great moral, legal, and political importance, and the subject currently holds special interest. Moreover, the author discusses the separation of church and state from a conceptual and moral standpoint and builds a framework that clears up certain moral, legal and political questions about religion and civil life. The paper also discusses several aspects of the separation including the content of the separation doctrine, normative grounds for separation of church and state, applications of the institutional doctrine, separation of church and state as a doctrine of conscience and the religion and morality in a free and democratic society.

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) is the International Sociology Honor Society. Its purpose is to promote an interest in sociology, sociological research, and other social and intellectual activities concerned with the human condition. "Sociological Inquiry" is the official journal of Alpha Kappa Delta. It is designed to implement the scientific aims of AKD by communicating and reviewing developments of sociological interest in the service of faculty, investigators, and students alike. Since the journal has a broad constituency, to meet its objectives it must maintain a perspective general enough to cater to the interests and needs of sociologists and other social scientists with differing theoretical and methodological backgrounds engaged in a wide variety of activities in and out of academia. Thus it supports no particular theoretical, methodological or substantive area interest, but in a larger sense is concerned with them all.

It is the purpose of an introduction to present the rationale for an issue and to briefly review its contents. We feel, however, that the present issue has a special meaning and many potentially controversial aspects; it is thus necessary to offer an additional note about what is and is not included, and why the issue is structured as it is. Several years ago a group of SPSSI members decided to celebrate the organization's 50th anniversary by offering an issue of 75/ devoted to its history. As you will find in some of the papers in this issue, we discovered that history has several meanings and several functions. We chose not to offer a ceremonial review of SPSSI's activities and leaders over the last 50 years. We did, however, want to include the reflections of selected SPSSI veterans. Thus, this issue includes both essays by "outside" individuals and comments by "insiders" who participated in the events our essayists describe. We hope this juxtaposition will give the reader a sense of the richness of history and an awareness that events may be interpreted from a variety of perspectives. In our work on this issue, we also became aware that there are few historians of social issue research and fewer historians of SPSSI. This issue makes no pretense of being all-inclusive.

This article critically examines the geography of volunteering in relation to international development. We identify the investments involved in sustaining the North-South imaginaries that have come to dominate scholarship in this field and explore new ways of unsettling this geography. We draw together empirical material from five different research projects, conducted with distinct thematic and geographical foci over a six-year timeframe. We do so in order to show how existing geographies of volunteering and development have produced fixed understandings of agency and experiences in diverse contexts, meanwhile side-lining the temporalities associated with such fixings. We highlight how the continued privileging of northern mobilities, temporalities and biographies has segregated particular settings and types of volunteering and obscured other, often shared and sometimes co-produced development processes, relationships and spaces. In developing a new approach, we first emphasise the importance of looking at the "hidden geometries" that shape the individual, institutional and organisational articulations that are central to the relationship between volunteering and development. Second, we introduce the idea of a flattened topography to level the emphasis on difference in the geographies associated with this relationship. We aim to make visible new volunteers and development actors as well as reveal different rhythms and routines of volunteering and different identities, biographies and forms of career and life-making connected with volunteering and development. Examines the context in which the International Political Science Association was founded in 1949. This paper analyzes the trends in the development of the discipline that preceded this event: the ancient intellectual roots of political science, and the surprisingly recent period at which this subject established its legitimacy on the university syllabus. The establishment of professional organizations within the discipline took place much later, and at a very uneven pace globally. This article looks in great detail at the process by which the need for an international political science organization was identified, describes the circumstances that led to the foundation of such a body, and assesses its early contribution to the development of the discipline.

The networking literature has burgeoned in recent years within a complex cross-disciplinary field and particularly in economic geography and regional planning. Networks have been analysed both as organizational expressions of globalization, linked to claims about the rise of the network society, and as territorial and cultural systems of exchange. Concepts of networks and networking have been accepted as positive, and sometimes also as progressive or radical within both social science and policy discourses. In this article we analyse regionally embedded economic networks and the EU’s urban and regional policy networks as a new mode of administration, at a variety of spatial scales. Little attention has been paid to the theoretical implications of using the concept of network as a social metaphor or to the operation of actually existing networks, as a result of conceptualizing networks in ways that deny their constitutive inequalities, asymmetries and democratic deficits. This darker side has been pushed into the shadows by the rhetorical emphasis on the benefits claimed for networked organizational forms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the significance of experience of community, empathy and belonging in social and political arrangements in the U.S. Principles, formal relationships, and arguments, the paradigm of a scholarly article is far less capable of expressing more emotional or subjective material. The groups and associations that form within this space; voluntary associations, labor unions, faith communities, and more often grow to the point where they can exert significant force on the state.

Organizations are composed of stable, predominantly cooperative interactions or n-person exchanges. Humans have been engaging in n-person exchanges for a great enough period of evolutionary time that we appear to have evolved a distinct constellation of species-typical mechanisms specialized to solve the adaptive problems posed by this form of social interaction. These mechanisms appear to have been evolutionarily elaborated out of the cognitive infrastructure that initially evolved for dyadic exchange. Key adaptive problems that these mechanisms are designed to solve include coordination among individuals, and defense against exploitation by free riders. Multi-individual cooperation could not have been maintained over evolutionary time if free riders reliably benefited more than contributors to collective enterprises, and so outcompeted them. As a result, humans evolved mechanisms that implement an aversion to exploitation by free riding, and a strategy of conditional cooperation, supplemented by punitive sentiment towards free riders. Because of the design of these mechanisms, how free riding is treated is a central determinant of the survival and health of cooperative organizations. The mapping of the evolved psychology of n-party exchange cooperation may contribute to the construction of a principled theoretical foundation for the understanding of human behavior in organizations. The article reports on developments related to the International Social Science Council (ISC) as of December 2005. ISSC president Lourdes Arizpe has addressed the 33rd Unesco General Conference. Four organizations have been accepted to membership in the council which includes the Economic Social and Research Council, German Research Foundation, Research Council of Norway and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. Two task forces were set up in pursuit of the Strategic Planning Advisory Committee recommendations. The International Global Social Change Programme was successfully held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on September 7-8, 2005.

More than 200 freshly minted doctoral graduates enter the field of organization science every year. A non-trivial number of existing faculty members move from one university to another every year, while other organization science faculty leave academia to enter retirement, consulting, or industry. Despite the importance of this large, complex system of entries and exits, few attempts have been made to explicitly understand how the system works. Drawing upon sociology of science and careers research, we studied the underlying form of the position allocation system by focusing on the relative importance of research success and prior affiliations as antecedents of movement and stability across positions. We used three theoretical models: accumulative advantage, sponsored mobility, and contest mobility. Tracking hundreds of faculty members for 16 years post doctorate, we find a downward cascading of affiliation prestige over time that affects people more dramatically and quickly than we expected, especially women. Accumulative advantage, the most predictive of our models, does help to maintain relative but not absolute prestige, at least until its effects wane in later years of the career. These findings are relevant to scholars interested in the sociology of science, organization scholars interested in the underlying dynamics of their discipline, and individuals making career choices. Responding to the growing gap between the sociological ethos and the world we study, the challenge of public sociology is to engage multiple publics in multiple ways. These public sociologies should not be left out in the cold, but brought into the framework of our discipline. In this way we make public sociology a visible and legitimate enterprise, and, thereby, invigorate the discipline as a whole. Accordingly, if we map out the division of sociological labor, we discover antagonistic interdependence among four types of knowledge: professional, critical, policy, and public. In the best of all worlds the flourishing of each type of sociology is a condition for the flourishing of all, but they can just as easily assume pathological forms or become victims of exclusion and subordination. This field of power beckons us to explore the relations among the four types of sociology as they vary historically and nationally, and as they provide the template for divergent individual careers. Finally, comparing disciplines points to the umbilical chord that connects sociology to the world of publics, underlining sociology's particular investment in the defense of civil society, itself beleaguered by the encroachment of markets and states. Giving this presidential address to the Southern Economics Association is more of a privilege than a duty of office. I suspect that I am more honored to give this talk than most past presidents of the Association, given my current academic post in California. I may be far removed from my southern heritage in space, but not in orientation. My heart remains tied to the South. The field of criminology lacks a sense of its own history. To rectify this situation, I apply the concepts and framework of the life-course perspective to the development of criminology as a discipline. Examining criminology in the United States over the last 100 years, I discuss three eras (or life-course phases), intellectual continuities and turning points in the field. My thesis is that if we knew our history, we would realize that ideas about crime matter. I offer a revised version on how to view criminology and in doing so address the theme of the 2003 annual meeting of the American Society of Criminology, "The Challenge of Practice, the Benefits of Theory." Most of the current work on network analysis tends to concentrate on the relationship between actors and the context within which various actors engage in the formulation of public policy. Consequently, analysis of the inter-organizational structures through which this policy is implemented receives less attention. In this article attention is drawn to questions concerning the management of inter-organizational networks as the vehicles for carrying out policy prdgrammes. At the same time, an argument is made for using the term 'network' not only as an analytical concept but also to denote collectivities that are consciously constructed for the realization of purposeful joint action. The participant-observer study of the Cheshire Home in Great Britain which is described in this article was intended to bring some fieldwork evidence to bear on popular speculations in the field of the sociology of knowledge. These speculations are best known through the writing of Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann, which draws heavily on the work of Alfred Schutz. Berber's sociology of knowledge draws heavily on notions of socialization which are derived from Goffman's studies of institutional life and from a too simple interpretation of G. H. Mead. This article therefore examines a Cheshire Home as a marginal world which perhaps gave a base for a counter reality and a cluster of counter identities by focusing on processes of resocialization. In view of the great weight given by Berger and Luckmann to temporality as a constituent of reality, special attention was given to the temporal framework within which inmates apprehended both daily agenda and personal biographies. The picture that emerges is of a remarkably tenacious normality. The Cheshire Home was not a base for a counter reality. The three categories which give shape and meaning to the lives of most adults held firm and were still prime categories for interpreting their lives and the world and for structuring relationships.

This article begins with a discussion of the functions that publications serve, and ends with speculations on the future of SPSSI's publication programs. The five main sections of the article describe the SPSSI book publishing program, separately review the history of both SPSSI-sponsored books and SPSSI's journal publications, provide a citation analysis of the Journal of Social Issue (JSI), and comment on recurrent themes in SPSSI's publishing activities. Included in tables are lists of all SPSSI-sponsored books, all JSI editors, the most frequent contributors to JSI, the most cited JSI articles (1965-1979), and the most cited JSI issues (1965-1979). Oriented toward academics and students, SPSSI publications have typically either focused on such social issues as prejudice and peace or been social psychological textbooks. A small set of elected SPSSI officers have played a key role in organizing and guiding the Society's publication program. The intellectual roots of JSI articles are primarily in psychology, but the journal's impact is multidisciplinary. Despite the difficulties inherent in the publishing process, JSI and SPSSI-sponsored books have contributed greatly to SPSSI's identity and economic well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) has been a prominent conduit for American psychologists' involvement in political and social affairs. For years SPSSI has stood as the center of political activism in American psychology. An examination of SPSSI and several other professional organizations founded during the period between the two world wars indicates that, despite its activism. SPSSI shared with the others a set of conventional assumptions about the irrationality of human nature, an unstable social order, and the preference for scientific judgment. Early SPSSI documents also contain more radical aspirations: critical self-reflection about the scientific enterprise, candid culture criticism, and political activism. However, these did not remain dominant in the organization. While being an occasion for celebration, the 50th anniversary of SPSSI also offers occasion to reevaluate these mixed commitments. A collective biography of the successive incumbents of SPSSl's highest office reveals centers of education and employment, and distinct demographic trends, A content analysis of available presidential addresses suggests enduring themes in the rhetoric of SPSSI leaders. The influence of significant individuals and events in fostering networks among members of the presidential cohort is explored, along with the role of SPSS! leaders in the development of social psychology.
