The intensity of interannual variation of spring precipitation over southern China during 1979–2014 and possible reasons for it are investigated in this paper. There is a significant interdecadal change in the intensity of interannual variation of spring precipitation over southern China around 1995/96. The intensity of interannual variation of spring rainfall over South China is stronger during 1979–95 than that during 1996–2014. The possible reason may be the larger amplitude of the sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) in the western Pacific Ocean (WP) before 1995/96. The cooler (warmer) SSTA in WP may trigger an abnormal local anticyclone (cyclone) at lower levels. The anomalous southwesterly (northeasterly) flow at the northwestern flank of the WP anticyclone (cyclone) covers South China, transporting more (less) moisture to South China. Meanwhile, the anomalous winds converge (diverge) in South China at lower levels and diverge (converge) at upper levels, which causes the anomalous ascent (descent) to enhance (reduce) the precipitation over there. However, during 1996–2014, the intensity of interannual variation of spring rainfall over the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River valley becomes much stronger than that during 1979–95, which is related to the intensified interannual variation of the atmospheric circulation in the middle and high latitudes over Eurasia. The weak (strong) Siberian high and East Asian trough may reduce (enhance) the northerly wind from the middle and high latitudes. Identification and analysis was conducted on the diatoms from the 19 cm sediment of the P6-10 core, drilled from China's 29th Antarctic Expedition, to attempt to semi-quantitatively reconstruct the annual sea surface temperature (SST) of Prydz Bay from 1893 to 2013. There were 30 species within the 12 genera of diatoms found, and the main contributors were Fragilariopsis curta, F. cylindrus, F. sublinearis, F. ritscheri, and Thalassiosira antarctica. They were divided into three categories based on their ecological affinity. The percentages of four specific species, i.e., F. curta, F. cylindrus, F. ritscheri, and F. separanda, which might be low SST indicators, were added together to represent the SST of Prydz Bay. With the help of cluster analysis, diatom assemblages were divided into diatom zones. Therefore, SST changes were divided into five stages by both the percentage of those four diatom species and the diatom zones: the high-temperature stage from 1893 to 1903, the cooling stage from 1903 to 1936, the stable and warm stage from 1936 to 1983, the low-temperature stage from 1983 to 1996, and the temperature rising stage from 1996 to 2013. On the multidecadal scale, SST change was affected by adjustments to solar radiation. On the contrary, the ENSO events mainly affected SST on the interannual scale. In addition, regarding the unique geographical environment (such as regional atmospheric circulation and a wind field) in Prydz Bay, volcanic eruptions and the like also played important roles in some exceptional periods. The characteristics of landfalling severe typhoons (LSTYs)—i.e., typhoons with landfall intensities of 2 min with a mean maximum sustained wind ≥41.5 m s−1—in South China (SC) were here examined. Thirteen LSTYs have been recorded in SC since 1949, and most of them underwent a rapid intensification before landfall. The LSTYs were classified into three categories based on the intensity of the western North Pacific summer monsoon, i.e., as weak, moderate, and strong monsoons. The characteristics of the three types of LSTYs are markedly different. Two LSTYs (7317 and 1523) were developed against a weak monsoon (WM) background and did not have abundant monsoon water vapor drawn into the typhoon cores. Therefore, these two LSTYs exhibited smaller horizontal outer sizes and weaker "warm–wet" cores than those in moderate and strong monsoons. However, a warm offshore ocean supplied a sufficient amount of energy, favoring these two LSTYs' rapid intensification before landfall. There have been five LSTYs (9113, 0518, 0816, 1320, and 1826) that formed under strong monsoon (SM) conditions but obtained a poor energy supply from the coastal ocean. Embedded in the SM, the vigorous warm–wet monsoon flow was drawn into the typhoons and persisted for several days until landfall. Then, the five LSTYs developed strongly at the greatest horizontal scale and were maintained as severe typhoons for almost 48 h before landfall. The beneficial warm–wet atmospheric circulation stimulated the strongest warm (wet) core at the upper (lower) level of the LSTYs, and a secondary, low-level warm core occurred as well. In moderate monsoon (MM) cases (8106, 9617, 1311, 1410, 1418, and 1714), the strength of the monsoon flow, the "warm–wet" core of the typhoon, and the ocean energy supply were ranked just between those of the LSTYs in WMs and SMs. The development of the LSTYs in the MM cases resulted from a combination of the effects of monsoon and ocean energy supply. In addition, the powerful upper-level divergence ascribed to the strong South Asia High may have played an auxiliary role in MM cases. From the perspective of the sea surface temperature (SST) response to the LSTYs, because of a relatively fast translation speed and the warmer subsurface ocean, the SST cooling was weakest for WM cases. Owing to the complexity of the climate system and limitations of numerical dynamical models, machine learning based on big data has been used for climate forecasting in recent years. In this study, we attempted to use an artificial neural network (ANN) for summer precipitation forecasts in the Yangtze-Huaihe River Basin (YHRB), eastern China. The major ANN employed here is the standard backpropagation neural network (BPNN), which was modified for application to the YHRB. Using the analysis data of precipitation and the predictors/factors of atmospheric circulation and sea surface temperature, we calculated the correlation coefficients between precipitation and the factors. In addition, we sorted the top six factors for precipitation forecasts. In order to obtain accurate forecasts, month (factor)-to-month (precipitation) forecast models were applied over the training and validation periods (i.e., summer months over 1979–2011 and 2012–2019, respectively). We compared the standard BPNN with the BPNN using a genetic algorithm-based backpropagation (GABP), support vector machine (SVM) and multiple linear regression (MLR) for the summer precipitation forecast after the model training period, and found that the GABP method is the best among the above methods for precipitation forecasting, with a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of approximately 20% for the YHRB, which is substantially lower than the BPNN, SVM and MLR values. We then selected the best summer precipitation forecast of the GABP month-to-month models by summing up monthly precipitation, in order to obtain the summer scale forecast, which presents a very successful performance in terms of evaluation measures. For example, the basin-averaged MAPE and anomaly rate reach 4.7% and 88.3%, respectively, for the YHRB, which can be a good recommendation for future operational services. It appears that sea surface temperatures (SST) in some key areas dominate the factors for the forecasts. Based on rainfall data for the period of 1960–2018 from 382 stations in southwest China and multiple reanalysis datasets, interannual variation of rainfall in late spring over Southwest China and associated sea surface temperature and atmospheric circulation anomalies are examined. The first leading mode of late-spring rainfall anomalies displays a uniform-distribution pattern. The second leading mode shows a zonal dipole pattern. The leading mode is related to an atmospheric wave train over mid-high latitudes of Eurasia, with a center of action of atmospheric anomaly over Southwest China. The atmospheric anomalies over Southwest China modulate late-spring rainfall there via modulating vertical motion and water vapor transport. In addition, the leading mode of late-spring rainfall anomalies has a close relation with sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. SSTA in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific impacts late-spring rainfall anomalies over Southwest China via modulation of the tropical Walker and Hadley circulation. The second leading mode of late-spring rainfall variation over Southwest China is closely associated with SSTA in the tropical western Pacific and a mid-high latitude wave train. SSTA in the tropical western Pacific and the mid-high latitudes wave train together leads to out-of-phase variation of meridional wind anomalies between western and eastern parts of Southwest China, which further results in a zonal dipole rainfall anomaly over Southwest China. In recent years, haze pollution has become the most concerning environmental issue in China due to its tremendous negative effects. In this study, we focus on the enhanced responses of December–January haze days in North China to September–October sea ice in the Beaufort Sea during 1998–2015. Via both observation and numerical approaches, compared with an earlier period (1980–97), the sea ice concentration in the Beaufort Sea presented large variability during 1998–2015. During 1980–97, the Beaufort Sea was mainly covered by perennial ice, and the ablation and freezing of sea ice mainly occurred at the south edge of the Beaufort Sea. Thus, heavy sea ice in autumn induced negative sea surface temperature anomalies across the Gulf of Alaska in November. However, the colder sea surface in the Gulf of Alaska only induced a weak influence on the haze-associated atmospheric circulations. In contrast, during 1998–2015, a drastic change in sea ice existed near the center of the Arctic Ocean, due to the massive melting of multiyear sea ice in the western Beaufort Sea. The perennial ice cover in the western Beaufort Sea was replaced by seasonal ice. The broader sea ice cover resulted in positive sea surface temperature anomalies in the following November. Then, suitable atmospheric backgrounds were induced for haze pollution in December and January. Simultaneously, the response of the number of haze days over North China to sea ice cover increased. Recent studies demonstrated the existence of a conspicuous atmospheric combination mode (C-mode) originating from nonlinear interactions between El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Pacific warm pool annual cycle (AC). Here we find that the C-mode exhibits prominent decadal amplitude variations during the ENSO decaying boreal spring season. It is revealed that the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) can largely explain this waxing and waning in amplitude. A robust positive correlation between ENSO and the C-mode is detected during a negative AMO phase but not during a positive phase. Similar results can also be found in the relationship of ENSO with 1) the western North Pacific (WNP) anticyclone and 2) spring precipitation over southern China, both of which are closely associated with the C-mode. We suggest that ENSO property changes due to an AMO modulation play a crucial role in determining these decadal shifts. During a positive AMO phase, ENSO events are distinctly weaker than those in an AMO negative phase. In addition, El Niño events concurrent with a positive AMO phase tend to exhibit a westward-shifted sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly pattern. These SST characteristics during the positive AMO phase are both not conducive to the development of the meridionally asymmetric C-mode atmospheric circulation pattern and thus reduce the ENSO/C-mode correlation on decadal time scales. These observations can be realistically reproduced by a coupled general circulation model (CGCM) experiment in which North Atlantic SSTs are nudged to reproduce a 50-yr sinusoidally varying AMO evolution. The present study investigates the interdecadal changes in the relationship between El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and midlatitude North Atlantic (MNA) sea surface temperature (SST) with northwest China (NWC) winter precipitation (WP) variability and the plausible causes. Results show that ENSO and MNA SST have weak correlations with NWC WP before the mid-1990s, whereas the connections are enhanced sharply afterward, with above (below) normal precipitation occuring when there are positive (negative) ENSO SST and negative (positive) MNA SST anomalies (SSTA). Remarkable differences are found in the atmospheric circulations. After the mid-1990s, there is a pronounced Pacific–North American–Eurasian (PNA-EU)-like pattern in the Northern Hemisphere, whereas an Arctic Oscillation–like pattern is found before the mid-1990s. The change in the relationships between NWC WP and SSTs is likely attributable to the enhanced connection between ENSO and MNA SST after the mid-1990s. It is found that ENSO and MNA SSTA can cause NWC WP variation independently through atmospheric teleconnections. In addition, significant precipitation anomalies also occur when concurrent but oppositely signed SSTs anomalies in the two regions are observed. The reinforced negative correlations between ENSO and MNA SST after the mid-1990s act in concert on NWC WP by exciting a PNA-EU-like pattern. This information would help us to better understand the physical processes of the teleconnections between NWC WP variability and the ENSO/MNA SST, in which the strength of the correlation between ENSO and MNA SST should be taken into account. Based on the long-term reanalysis datasets and the multivariate copula method, this study reveals that the frequency of summer hot drought events (SHDEs) over northeastern China (NEC) shows interdecadal variations during 1925–2010. It is revealed that the summer sea surface temperature (SST) over the North Atlantic has a significant positive correlation with the frequency of SHDEs over NEC on the decadal time scale, indicating a potential influence of the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO). Further analyses indicate that during the positive phases of the AMO, the warming SST over the North Atlantic can trigger a stationary Rossby wave originating from the North Atlantic, which splits into two wave trains propagating along two different routes. One is a zonally orientated wave train that resembles the Silk Road pattern, whereas the other is an arching wave train that resembles the polar–Eurasian pattern. A negative (positive) phase of the Silk Road pattern (polar–Eurasian pattern) may result in the weakened westerly wind along the jet stream, the downward vertical motion, and the anomalous positive geopotential center over NEC, providing favorable conditions for precipitation deficiency and high temperature and resulting in increased SHDEs. Thus, the Silk Road pattern and the polar–Eurasian pattern serve as linkages between the AMO and SHDEs over northeastern China in summer on the interdecadal time scale. Model simulations from CAM4 perturbed with warmer SST in the North Atlantic show precipitation deficiency and high temperature conditions over northeastern China in summer, supporting the potential impacts of the North Atlantic SST on SHDEs over northeastern China. Recent studies suggested significant impacts of boreal cryosphere changes on wintertime air stagnation and haze pollution extremes in China. However, the underlying mechanisms of such a teleconnection relationship remains unclear. Here we use the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) to investigate dynamic processes leading to atmospheric circulation and air stagnation responses to Arctic sea ice changes. We conduct four climate sensitivity experiments by perturbing sea ice concentrations (SIC) and corresponding sea surface temperature (SST) in autumn and early winter over the whole Arctic and three subregions in the climate model. The results indicate distinct responses in circulation patterns and regional ventilation to the region-specific Arctic changes, with the largest increase of both the probability (by 132 %) and the intensity (by 30 %) of monthly air stagnation extremes being found in the experiment driven by SIC and SST changes over the Pacific sector of the Arctic (the East Siberian and Chukchi seas). The increased air stagnation extremes are mainly driven by an amplified planetary-scale atmospheric teleconnection pattern that resembles the negative phase of the Eurasian (EU) pattern. Dynamical diagnostics suggest that convergence of transient eddy forcing in the vicinity of Scandinavia in winter is largely responsible for the amplification of the teleconnection pattern. Transient eddy vorticity fluxes dominate the transient eddy forcing and produce a barotropic anticyclonic anomaly near Scandinavia and wave train propagation across Eurasia to the downstream regions in East Asia. The piecewise potential vorticity inversion analysis reveals that this long-range atmospheric teleconnection of Arctic origin takes place primarily via the middle and upper troposphere. The anomalous ridge over East Asia in the middle and upper troposphere worsens regional ventilation conditions by weakening monsoon northwesterlies and enhancing temperature inversions near the surface, leading to more and stronger air stagnation and pollution extremes over eastern China in winter. Ensemble projections based on state-of-the-art climate models in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) corroborate this teleconnection relationship between high-latitude environmental changes and midlatitude weather extremes, though the tendency and magnitude vary considerably among each participating model. Seasonal covariability of the dryness/wetness in China and global sea surface temperature (SST) is investigated by using the monthly self-calibrated Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) data and other data from 1950 to 2014. The singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis shows two recurring PDSI-SST coupled modes. The first SVD mode of PDSI is associated with the warm phases of the eastern Pacific-type El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO) or Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO), the Indian Ocean basin mode (IOBM) in the autumn and winter, and the cold phase of the IOBM in the spring. Meanwhile, the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) pattern appears in every season except the autumn. The second SVD mode of PDSI is accompanied by a central Pacific-type El Niño developing from the winter to autumn over the tropical Pacific and a positive phase of IPO or PDO from the winter to summer. Moreover, an AMO pattern is observed in all seasons except the summer, whereas the SST over the tropical Indian Ocean shows negligible variations. The further analyses suggest that AMO remote forcing may be a primary factor influencing interdecadal variability of PDSI in China, and interannual to interdecadal variability of PDSI seems to be closely associated with the ENSO-related events. Meanwhile, the IOBM may be a crucial factor in interannual variability of PDSI during its mature phase in the spring. Autumn rain of West China (ARWC), a typical climate phenomenon characterized by continuous rainfall, is prone to flooding and secondary disasters. The ARWC in 2017, the greatest one since the last 30 years, resulted in an economic loss of 1.9 billion dollars and serious social impacts. It is thus urgent to understand the cause for this anomaly. In this article, the atmospheric circulations affecting the 2017's ARWC are identified. They are (1) a dipole pattern with the blocking over Europe and the trough over Lake Balkhash, which favors the southward outbreak of cold airs into West China, (2) increased water vapor transportation toward West China from the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and (3) a strengthening and northward displacement of the East Asian jet stream. The cold sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) in the equatorial central Pacific provides a superimposed effect. Further analysis reveals a synergic role in the interannual variability of the ARWC from the anomalies of the atmospheric circulation over Lake Balkhash and the SST in the equatorial central Pacific. The combination of anomalous trough over Lake Balkhash with cold SSTA in the equatorial central Pacific is most favorable for the increase of ARWC, while that of anomalous ridge with warm SSTA generally results in a decrease of ARWC. It is known that an increase of water vapor over the Arctic is one of most plausible causes driving Arctic amplification. However, debate continues with regard to the explanation of the underlying mechanisms driving the increase of moisture over the Arctic region in the observations. Here, we used the Community Atmosphere Model with prescribed sea surface temperature along with reanalysis datasets to examine the role of fast atmospheric responses to the increase of anthropogenic sulfate aerosol concentrations in China. We found that it plays an additive role in moisture transport from the midlatitudes, resulting in warming of the Arctic region, especially around the Barents–Kara Seas. Specifically, sulfate aerosol forcing in China reduces the meridional temperature gradient and leads to the increase of moisture transport into the Arctic by altering atmospheric circulation. The resulting increase of moisture then leads to surface warming through the enhancement of the downwelling longwave radiation. This implies that Arctic warming around the Barents–Kara Seas has been accelerated, at least in part, by a fast atmospheric response to anthropogenic sulfate aerosol emissions in China in the recent past. Haze pollution is among the most serious disasters in the North China Plain, dramatically damaging human health and the social economy. The frequency of haze events in February typically varies from the number of haze days in the winter. To improve the understanding of haze pollution in February, this study not only showed the large-scale atmospheric circulations associated with the variation in the haze, but also analyzed its connection with Arctic sea ice. The observational and large ensemble model results both illustrated that the preceding increase in the early-winter Chukchi Sea ice might intensify the February haze pollution. The accumulated sea ice over the Chukchi Sea resulted in a steeper meridional sea surface temperature gradient and a significant and persistent westerly thermal wind. In February, the responsive pattern in the atmosphere developed into a Rossby wave–like pattern, linking the Chukchi Sea ice and the February haze pollution. Modulating by the induced large-scale atmospheric circulations, the horizontal and vertical atmospheric ventilation conditions and the hygroscopic growth conditions enhanced the frequency of haze pollution events. This study investigates the impacts of the autumn sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) on the following winter (December-January-February, DJF) 2-m air temperature anomalies (TSAs) in China and discusses the potential predictability of the DJF TSAs based on the intimate link between the DJF TSAs and autumn global SSTAs. The empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis suggests that the three leading EOF modes jointly account for 80% of the total TSA variances and are characterized by homogeneous spatial, north-south seesaw, and cross-structure patterns. These EOFs are temporally stable and suggest the potential predictability of the DJF TSAs. The EOF1 mode is influenced by changes in the intensities of the Siberian high, East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM), and East Asian trough related to a Eurasian teleconnection pattern, which can be tracked back to the autumn (September-October-November, SON) SSTAs. The Arctic oscillation (AO) exerts a strong influence on the EOF2 mode. The configuration of the global SON SSTAs induces the AO signal and causes a TSA oscillation between the northern and southern parts of China. The EOF3 mode is associated with the western pathway of the EAWM and the westward shift of the Siberian high, which are attributed to two SON SSTA patterns. The multiple correlation coefficients between the SSTA indices and winter atmospheric circulations suggest the cooperative contribution of the autumn global SSTAs to the DJF TSAs. Therefore, a physically motivated statistical model is established based on the autumn SSTA indices. Over the past decades, Beijing, the capital city of China, has encountered increasingly frequent persistent haze events (PHE). While the increased pollutant emissions are considered as the most important reason, changes in regional atmospheric circulations associated with large-scale climate warming also play a role. In this study, we find a significant positive trend of PHE in Beijing for the winters from 1980 to 2016 based on updated daily observations. This trend is closely related to an increasing frequency of extreme anomalous southerly episodes in North China, a weakened East Asian trough in the mid-troposphere and a northward shift of the East Asian jet stream in the upper troposphere. These conditions together depict a weakened East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) system, which is then found to be associated with an anomalous warm, high-pressure system in the middle--lower troposphere over the northwestern Pacific. A practical EAWM index is defined as the seasonal meridional wind anomaly at 850 hPa in winter over North China. Over the period 1900-2016, this EAWM index is positively correlated with the sea surface temperature anomalies over the northwestern Pacific, which indicates a wavy positive trend, with an enhanced positive phase since the mid-1980s. Our results suggest an observation-based mechanism linking the increase in PHE in Beijing with large-scale climatic warming through changes in the typical regional atmospheric circulation. This study investigates the influence of different sea surface temperature (SST) modes on the winter temperature in China using the generalized equilibrium feedback assessment (GEFA). It is found that the second EOF mode of winter temperature in China during 1958-2010 shows a typical northeast-southwest (NE-SW) pattern, which is a major spatial mode of Chinese winter temperature at interannual scales. The winter temperature of the NE-SW pattern is forced mainly by SST modes in the tropical Pacific and Atlantic. For 2009/10, the tropical Pacific El Niño mode and tropical Atlantic tripole mode have the largest contribution to the response. The physical mechanism of the cold northeast-warm southwest (CNE-WSW) pattern is also explained in terms of GEFA of the responses of the atmospheric circulation. The northerly flow at the low level transports cold air to northern and northeastern China, resulting in a lower temperature there. Previous studies revealed the double-peak mode (DPM) in South China precipitation, corresponding to the two stages in the rainy season, i.e. the first rainy stage (FRS) and the second rainy stage (SRS). But observations in recent two decades show that the DPM has changed to a single-peak mode (SPM). Both the precipitation amount and the heavy rainfall event frequency enhanced significantly in the gap between the FRS and the SRS in 1991–2010, compared to those in 1961-1990. This change can be linked to the effects of the global warming. During the warmer period, the July sea surface temperature over the western Pacific has greater increases than that over the central and eastern Pacific, especially west of 140°E. It may generate more tropical cyclones (TCs) in the inshore areas and then more typhoon rainfall over South China. On the other hand, the increments of the air temperature over the East Asian continent are greater than those of the SST over the western Pacific under the global warming, which enlarges the land-ocean temperature/pressure contrast and leads to a trend of the earlier onset dates of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) in recent two decades. Then, the earlier ASM will facilitate the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) to retreat earlier from the South China Sea and enhance the convective precipitation in South China between the FRS and the SRS. Also, due to the warmer ocean, the WPSH locates more westward in July, and more moisture will be transported to South China from the southwest side to the WPSTH. All these influences favor a remarkably increasing precipitation in the gap in the warmer period and changes the seasonal cycle from double-peak mode to single-peak mode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impacts of Arctic sea ice on the interannual variability of winter extreme low temperature (WELT) in Northeast China (NEC) and the associated atmospheric circulation patterns are explored in this study based on meteorological observation and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction-National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis data. Results show that WELT in NEC has prominent interannual variability. We further use ±0.8 standard deviation as the threshold to select the years of frequent and rare extreme low temperature anomalies. Using composite analysis, we find that there are significant negative geopotential height anomalies at 500 hPa over NEC and positive geopotential height anomalies along the Arctic region, which represent the intensification of the East Asian trough (EAT) and the negative Arctic Oscillation (AO) phase in the years of more frequent WELT. The opposite characteristics are detected in the years of rare WELT. Furthermore, we determine that the Barents-Kara Seas are key sea ice regions in Arctic area. In the years of frequent WELT, the decrease of autumn Barents-Kara Seas sea ice and the positive sea surface temperature anomaly can last until the following winter, which is conducive to the intensification of anticyclonic anomalies in Ural regions and the northward extension of Ural ridge (UR). The northerly flow in front of UR guides the cold air penetrating southward from polar regions. Moreover, the anomalous cyclone over East Asia deepens the EAT. The northerly wind behind EAT guides the cold air to the NEC region, causing the wintertime low temperature there. The almost opposite situation occurs in the years of rare WELT. South China is one of the most densely populated and agriculture-based regions in China. Local spring precipitation is crucial to the people's livelihood and social economic development. Using the observed and reanalysis datasets for the period 1958–2019, this study revealed an asymmetric effect of El Niño—Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the following spring precipitation over South China. During the years with positive ENSO phases, a strong positive correlation between spring precipitation and the preceding winter ENSO sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies existed over Guangdong province. For the years with negative ENSO phases, such a strong positive correlation shifts westwards to Guangxi province. To be specific, the El Niño events usually result in a precipitation surplus in the decaying spring over Guangdong province, while the La Niña events usually lead to a precipitation deficit in the decaying spring over Guangxi province. This is attributed to the nonlinear effects of ENSO on the atmospheric circulation. Compared with El Niño, the abnormal center of La Niña evidently extends westwards, inducing a westward movement of the anomalous low-level atmospheric circulation, which eventually results in a westward-shifted effect on the following spring precipitation over South China. Our findings emphasize the nonlinear responses of spring precipitation over South China to ENSO. This has important implications for the seasonal climate predictions over South China. In this study, the impact of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) on the China winter temperature (CWT) was assessed on an interdecadal timescale, and the capacities of the 35 models of the fifth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) were assessed by simulating the PDO-CWT teleconnection. The Met Office Hadley Centre's sea ice and sea surface temperature (HadISST) were used as the observational data, and Climatic Research Unit (CRU) datasets provided long-term temperature data for the 1901–2005 period. By calculating the spatial correlation coefficient between the PDO index and winter temperature in China, thirteen CMIP5 models close to the HadISST datasets were selected for this study. These models were averaged as the good multi-model ensemble (GOODMME), and the PDO-CWT spatial correlation between the GOODMME and the observations was 0.80. Overall, the correlation coefficient between the PDO index and atmospheric circulation suggests that the GOODMME produces the same excellent results as do the observations. The results also verify the GOODMME's superiority in simulating the impact of the PDO on winter temperatures in China.
