Asymmetrical six-phase induction machines are widely used in high-power safety-critical applications. The so-called pseudo six-phase winding layout has recently been proposed as a promising contender for high power medium voltage applications in terms of torque density, phase current quality, simple single-layer-based stator winding design, and fault-tolerant capability. This winding layout employs quadruple three-phase stator winding sets connected to provide only six terminals, while being fed from two three-phase inverters. Therefore, the same conventional six-phase-based control structure can still be employed. Among the different control techniques, model predictive current control is considered as one of the cutting-edge technologies for multiphase drive systems, thanks to its simplicity and flexibility in defining new control objectives. This paper investigates how the available 64 voltage vectors of a six-phase inverter are classified among different subspaces when employing a pseudo six-phase stator winding. Moreover, the required modifications to classical predictive current control (PCC) are introduced in order to properly control the machine in a manner similar to conventional asymmetrical six-phase machines while ensuring minimum circulating xy current components. The concept of virtual voltage vectors (VVVs) has also been employed to further enhance the stator current quality. The proposed controller is validated using a 2Hp prototype pseudo six-phase machine under different operating conditions. The nine-phase six-terminal induction machine has recently been proposed as a promising contender to the conventional six-phase asymmetrical winding machine in terms of torque density, phase current quality, stator winding simplicity, and fault-tolerant capability. However, the relatively lower dc-link voltage utilization of a single neutral arrangement in multiphase machines with multiple three-phase windings represents, in general, a technical challenge when compared to windings with isolated star points. Therefore, this paper proposes a new pseudo six-phase winding layout suitable for medium-voltage high-power induction machines, which employs quadruple three-phase stator winding sets, while providing the same terminal behavior of a nine-phase six-terminal winding. Additionally, like the traditional six-phase winding, two possible neutral arrangements can be configured. The proposed winding configuration provides the same dc-link voltage utilization as in conventional dual three-phase winding machines with isolated neutrals. The effect of the circulating zero-sequence current component experienced with a single neutral arrangement can also be avoided. In electric drive applications that are based on high‐speed induction motors (IMs) with an extended speed range, stator winding pole‐changing is a possible technique to avoid oversizing the driving motor. The electronic pole changing employed in multiphase IMs has gained recent interest because it avoids physical winding reconfiguration. The effective number of poles of the air gap flux distribution can be electronically altered by simply changing the applied current sequence to a multiphase stator. The main problem associated with this technique is the significant increase in machine magnetising current with the increase in effective pole number when conventional multiphase distributed windings are employed. This study proposes a new fractional‐slot concentrated winding layout with a special stator connection suitable for pole‐amplitude modulated IMs that offers a 2:1 pole ratio while maintaining equal magnetising current for both winding pole pairs. Moreover, constant power operation can be achieved for a speed range of over 4 pu. The main concept is discussed and verified through simulations and experimentally. This paper proposes a new dual modular multilevel converter (MMC) topology as a medium-voltage drive for adjustable-speed applications incorporating open-end stator winding machines. A novel concept of sharing one capacitor between each two adjacent-arm sub-modules (SMs) of MMC phase-legs, operating with out-of-phase modulation, is realised through new SM arrangement. This concept allows the MMC to utilise half the number of the SM capacitors, compared to a traditional MMC topology. Additionally, the sizing requirement of the shared capacitor is diminished, which significantly reduces the volume of the drive system and its stored energy. The switching scheme of the shared capacitor between two oppositely modulated SMs eliminates the problem of capacitor wide-voltage fluctuations, independent of the operating frequency. Further, the proposed MMC can efficiently operate at near zero frequency; therefore, a machine speed-range from zero speed to the rated speed is possible under rated torque operating condition. The application of multiphase machines in high-power applications is now a recognized alternative, thanks to their higher fault-tolerance when compared with standard three-phase systems. Although multiphase machines with multiples of three-phase winding sets have been favored in many applications, literature has shown that machines with a prime number of phases, such as five-phase machines, generally outperform other phase orders, especially in terms of machine torque density. One of the major problems when dealing with a prime number of phases either in academic research or industrial applications is the special stator design. This paper provides a general technique to rewind standard off-the-shelf three-phase stator frames with any general prime phase order while preserving the same copper volume. The proposed winding layout is derived using the star of slots theory and the concept of stator winding shifting. Finite-element simulations are used to investigate examples with different phase orders, while experimental investigation is carried out to corroborate the proposed concept by rewinding a standard three-phase stator as a five-phase machine. This paper presents a dual modular multilevel converter (MMC) topology that utilizes energy exchange between adjacent-arm submodules (SMs), operating with out-of-phase modulation. The proposed configuration is applicable to medium-voltage high-power variable-speed drives incorporating open-end stator winding machines. A novel concept of power decoupling between adjacent-arm SMs in the dual MMC topology is realized through high-frequency transformer-based dc–dc converter modules. This concept offers a significant reduction in the sizing requirement of the SM capacitance and the stored energy in the MMC system, while avoiding the problem of wide voltage fluctuations of SM capacitors, especially at low operating frequencies. The proposed configuration can produce dc voltage; therefore, a machine speed range from zero speed to the rated speed is possible under the rated torque operating condition. The operating principles of the proposed dual MMC configuration are elaborated and necessary mathematical analysis is derived. This paper studies the postfault control of a nine-phase six-terminal induction machine (IM) during single open-line fault, which was recently proposed for high-power medium-voltage applications as a promising alternative to conventional six-phase IMs. The required optimal reference currents to provide prefault loading conditions under one-line open are derived using the two most common optimization criteria employed in multiphase drives, namely, maximum torque and minimum loss modes. A postfault controller, based on conventional decoupling Clarke's transformation, is then used to ensure the same controller structure under all conditions. Consequently, the machine characteristic curves, achievable torque, and stator copper losses under these different modes are compared. The combined star/pentagon connection of five-phase induction machines was recently demonstrated as a promising compromise between conventional star and pentagon connections. It combines the advantages of both star and pentagon connections without any additional hardware for winding changeover. This connection is based on two five-phase single layer concentrated winding sets shifted in space by π/10 and connected in a combined star/pentagon configuration to provide five-phase terminals. Since the combined star/pentagon connected induction machine is fundamentally an asymmetrical ten-phase machine, the machine mathematical model possesses additional subspaces, which affect the behavior of the machine especially under open line conditions. Starting from the conventional five-phase and m -bar squirrel cage induction machine model, the phase-variable model of the combined star/pentagon connection is introduced in this paper. The corresponding equivalent dq model with five decoupled subspaces, which can account for air gap harmonics up to ninth order, is then derived. Finally, it was shown that the machine model could be simply approximated with only two subspaces similar to a conventional five-phase induction machine with sinusoidally distributed winding, where the flux produced by the nonfundamental subspace could be neglected. In many applications, interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs) with fractional slot concentrated windings (FSCWs) are considered promising candidates in terms of higher power density and efficiency. In addition, employing a multiphase stator winding improves the drive train availability and increases reliability. This study investigates the effect of applying stator shifting to five‐phase FSCW winding IPMSMs to suppress the effect of the slot harmonics by doubling the number of slots. In this case, the winding coil pitch will be two, which stands as a compromise between single‐tooth and distributed winding topologies. This highly improves the air gap flux distribution, significantly reduces both rotor core and magnet eddy current losses, and increases saliency ratio and reluctance torque component. Moreover, an improved performance under fault conditions, in terms of lower torque ripple, and core and magnet losses, adds to the main advantages of this technique. Various slot/pole combinations suitable for five‐phase machines are investigated. A full simulation case study based on two‐dimensional finite element analysis is applied to the 20‐slot/18‐pole stator with single‐tooth winding under both healthy and open‐circuit phase fault cases. The steady-state modeling of multiphase induction machines (IMs) with m phases under open-line fault conditions is usually carried out based on symmetrical component theory. Hence, the estimation of the machine characteristic curves usually involves complex mathematical calculations and inversion of high-order matrices, which complicates the analysis. Moreover, the effect of the different subspaces’ impedances on the machine performance cannot be easily recognized using this modeling technique. Instead, this paper presents the first attempt to derive a simple equivalent circuit for a five-phase IM under open-line conditions that includes the effect of all subspaces in a single circuit. The derivation is carried out for both star and pentagon connections. The equivalent circuit can be a simple technique to explain the advantages obtained from a pentagon connection compared to the star connection under open-circuit faults. It can also be used to derive a simple expression for torque gain and torque ripple magnitude for different stator connections based on the circuit parameters. Voltage source converter (VSC)-based high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission is considered the future of offshore power transmission. This paper aims at providing a reliable VSC-HVDC transmission system architecture between offshore wind farms and onshore grids. In this paper, a large-capacity, low-speed flywheel energy storage system (FESS) based on a squirrel cage induction machine is applied in parallel with the VSC-HVDC at the grid side converter. The FESS is dedicated for surge power (due to power flow imbalance during fault) absorption instead of being dissipated in the form of resistive losses. Since the duration of these surges is relatively small, it has been shown that the flywheel can effectively mitigate this problem. In addition to the fault ride-through support during fault conditions, the FESS is employed for power leveling functionality during normal operation. The performance parameters of the proposed approach are investigated via both simulation and experimental results. A 132-kV, 100-MW HVDC system is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink during normal and fault conditions. One of the main merits offered by multiphase machines is their high fault-tolerant capability. Literature has demonstrated that the performance of multiphase induction machines under fault conditions is affected by the employed stator winding connection. In open-loop controlled five-phase machines, the star connection is favorable under healthy conditions while the pentagon connection is favorable and yields a lower derating factor under the open phase condition. In this paper, a new combined star/pentagon single layer winding layout that combines the advantages of both star and pentagon connections is proposed for a five-phase induction machine. Although the proposed winding is intrinsically an asymmetrical ten-phase machine, the proposed connection allows for only five-phase terminals. Moreover, the proposed winding not only yields better flux distribution compared to a conventional single layer winding, but also provides a complete cancellation of the third-order harmonic flux component caused by the induced third sequence currents due to the saturation effect and/or under unbalanced operation. Hence, the machine losses are decreased, which improves the overall machine efficiency. For the healthy case, the machine is similar to a conventional star connected five-phase machine. However, with one phase open, the proposed connection results in a lower derating factor compared to conventional connections for both open-loop and optimal current control techniques. This study proposes a new architecture of flywheel energy storage system (FESS) which can be implemented at generating unit (GU) level (e.g. wind turbine) or scaled up for application in grid‐side converter (GSC) stations of a multi‐terminal direct current (MTDC) system. The proposed architecture suppresses DC voltage leaps under grid faults, and performs power levelling duty at grid connection points. When implemented at GU level, the proposed FESS features a doubly‐fed induction machine (DFIM) – the flywheel machine – where its six stator winding terminals are connected in series between the grid and the GSC. The flywheel converter is of partial power rating, and is connected to the DFIM rotor. When employed at an MTDC GSC station, several submodules are connected to build an FESS station. The study proposes the control concept and the general topology of the FESS station. The performance parameters of the system are tested under normal and abnormal operating conditions. Despite the increased interest in multiphase induction machines for safety-critical applications, machine parameter identification for the different sequence planes is still a challenging research point. In most available literature, the effect of nonfundamental sequence planes is overlooked due to the assumption of sinusoidal winding distribution and healthy operation. However, in a single layer or concentric winding layout with an odd number of phases, the effect of flux produced by nonfundamental sequence planes cannot be ignored for the open-phase case. This paper proposes a simple offline method to estimate the parameters of a five-phase induction machine corresponding to different sequence planes. The proposed technique can estimate the stator leakage inductance as well as the magnetizing inductance of both fundamental and third sequences by applying a quasi-square voltage to the stator winding while the machine is running at no-load. Consequently, the rotor circuit parameters of the fundamental sequence plane can be simply obtained by deducting the stator impedance from the blocked rotor machine impedance. For the third sequence plane, an approximate relation to estimate these parameters based on the measured fundamental sequence rotor parameters is also given. This paper studies the effect of stator winding configuration on the performance of five-phase induction machines under healthy as well as faulty conditions. The study compares two connections, namely, star and pentagon connections. The comparison is conducted using both simulation and experimental results. The steady-state model based on symmetrical components theory is introduced for both connections with one-line open due to a converter fault, and the corresponding machine characteristic curves are estimated. During faults, two alternatives for machine operation are possible, namely, open-loop control and optimal current control. While the first alternative corresponds to higher torque ripple and unbalanced winding currents, the second option necessitates unbalanced phase voltages and typically an increased dc-link voltage to source the required optimal currents. Consequently, an increase in the employed semiconductor device rating is required, which is a critical design factor particularly in medium-voltage applications. A new V/f control technique is proposed to ensure disturbance-free operation with one-line open for both winding connections. Based on the unbalanced machine model and experimental verification, the derating factors that ensure safe machine operation for both winding connection alternatives are calculated. The comparison between the two connections shows the superiority of the pentagon connection under fault conditions in terms of efficiency, average torque, torque ripples, and derating factor. Although torque enhancement in multiphase induction machines using harmonic current injection has been addressed in the literature, a detailed assessment of the effect of this enhancement on the design parameters of multiphase machines with different numbers of phases is needed. This paper addresses this topic by performing a detailed comparative study of harmonic injection torque enhancement on multiphase machines with different numbers of phases. Sets of identical dimension and volume rotors differing in their value of the bar skew angle were designed to operate with the various stator designs in order to facilitate the comparative evaluation. A mathematical approach is also introduced to enable the derivation of equivalent multiphase machine parameters based on an existing one. In addition to a detailed finite-element-analysis verification of the results, time domain MATLAB simulations are used to verify the mathematical modeling. The results provide a means to assess the extent to which such harmonic injection may be beneficial by quantifying torque enhancement as well as torque density for various multiphase machines. The multiphase induction motor is considered to be the promising alternative to the conventional three-phase induction motor, especially in safety-critical applications because of its inherent fault-tolerant feature. Therefore, the attention of many researchers has been paid to develop different techniques for detecting various fault types of multiphase induction motors, to securely switch the control mode of the multiphase drive system to its post-fault operation mode. Therefore, several fault detection methods have been researched and adapted; one of these methods is the indices-based fault detection technique. This technique was firstly introduced to detect open-phase fault of multiphase induction motors. The main advantage of this technique is that its mathematical formulation is straightforward and can easily be understood and implemented. In this paper, the study of the indices-based fault detection technique has been extended to test its applicability in detecting some other stator and rotor fault types of multiphase induction motors, namely, open-phase, open-switch, bad connection and broken rotor bar faults.
