This fifth annual edition of MycoNews starts with an editorial on the critical importance of International Mycological Congresses (IMCs) to the health of mycology. Items on Counting down to IMC12, the State of the World's Plants and Fungi 2023, and progress towards Improving nomenclatural stability in medically important fungi follow. Reports are provided of several mycological meetings in 2023: the Asian Mycological Congress, XIX Congress of European Mycologists, a meeting of European Mycological Groups and Societies, the XI Latin American Mycological Congress, Westerdijk Spring Symposium on Fungal Evolution, the Brazilian Society of Mycology, the Annual Meeting of the Mycological Society of China, and the Fifth Iranian Mycological Congress. Information is provided on how to make nominations for the various IMA Awards due to be presented at IMC12 in August, the new Future is Fungi Award launched in 2023, and the Adel-Azeem and Stamets Award for work on Psilocybe in Africa. The Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute Awards for 2023 were made to Andrey Yurkov and Cathie Aime and the citations to those awards are provided. We include tributes to the passing of two eminent mycologists, Lorelei Norvell and Takashi Matsushima, and also send birthday greetings to Bryce Kendrick who turned 90, and Maria Ławrynowicz, Yu Li, and Anthony Whalley who all became octogenarians. This fourth annual edition of MycoNews starts with an editorial asking if mycology is approaching a tipping point, and note of the journal's 2021 Impact Factor almost doubling from 2020. Updated information and new speakers for IMC12 in 2024 is presented. Reports are provided for the Rise of the Fungi symposium in Amsterdam and of MycoRiseUP! in Warsaw in 2022. Information on activities of the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF) in the last two years are presented, including the formation of new Working Groups. Procedures for the nomination of IMA awards and for nomenclature proposals to be presented at IMC12 are provided. The Westerdijk Institute awards to Feng-Yan Bai and Marc Stadler are recorded, and Michael Wingfield and Geoffrey Kibby are congratulated on special awards they have received. Tributes are paid to the passing of two distinguished mycologists during the year, John Parmelee and John Pitt. Reviews of six mycological books published in 2021–22 are also provided. This third annual edition of MycoNews starts with a message from IMA President Wieland Meyer regarding the adoption of new statutes for the IMA, the postponement of IMC12 to 2024, and announcing Marc Stadler as President-elect. The new statutes are included in full. News is provided on the launch of a World Fungus Day, acceptance of the term Funga as an equivalent to Fauna and Flora by the IUCN Species Survival Commission, new arrangements and dates for IMC12 now to be held in Maastricht in July 2024, and revised arrangements for the publication of proposals to change any rules governing the nomenclature of fungi. Reports are provided for IAL9, the symposium of the International Association for Lichenology in Brazil mainly conducted virtually, MycoRise Up! in Poland, and the centenary of the German Mycological Society (DGFM). Birthday greetings from IMA go to David Farr, Marie-Agnés Letrouit-Galinou, Maria Olech, Angela Restrepo, Carol Shearer, James Trappe, and Shun-ichi Udagawa. Dr. Robert W. Lucky, IEEE Communications Society's fourth President, passed away at his home in Fair Haven, New Jersey on March 10, 2022. Bob does not need any introduction as most ComSoc members know Bob through his numerous keynote speeches and writings in his Reflections column in IEEE Spectrum. To pay tribute to our former President and communications pioneer, we have assembled a group of four former ComSoc Presidents from the New York metropolitan area who worked or interacted with Bob at different periods of his distinguished career. We present a short biography and brief review of contributions of professor Mirjana Vukićević-Karabin to the development of astrophysics education at the University of Belgrade and to the research in physics of the Earth ionosphere and the Sun. The bibliography of her papers is given as well. We hope that the review of the two aspects of her work will elucidate her important role in the development of astrophysics in our country. Pursuant to a Congressional act in 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services established the Interagency Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Coordinating Committee to address the burden of breast cancer in the United States. Subsequently, the Committee recommended researchers study the timing of exposure to breast cancer risk factors. Given the high breast cancer mortality rate on Staten Island, this paper presents a case-control study investigating breast cancer risk associated with puberty while living on Staten Island. The dataset combined New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene female death certificate information between 1985 and 2006, with life history information from newspaper obituaries. Data analyzed included: age, length of residence on Staten Island, birth on Staten Island, and residence on Staten Island during puberty. Cases were individuals who died of breast cancer and controls were individuals who died of non-malignant causes. Analysis included multivariate logistic regression on the full dataset and multiple replicates of randomized one case to two controls simulations. Results indicated that living on Staten Island during puberty (ages 9–19) was associated with an elevated risk of dying from breast cancer (odds ratio 1.35, p < 0.001, 95% CI = 1.18, 1.55). Este artigo apresenta os resultados da análise de 2.284 obituários publicados na Folha de S. Paulo, entre os anos de 2007 a 2012, com o objetivo de reconhecer as características de estilo, tema e composição do gênero, considerando o enquadramento deste enunciado nas categorias jornalísticas defendidas por Costa (2010) e Marques de Mello (2010), sob as perspectivas discursiv as de Bakhtin (2011) e de Maingueneau (2013). Para tanto, demonstra os resultados obtidos em dois procedimentos metodológicos que visam a elencar, quantitativa e qualitativamente, a estabilização dos elementos da composição, da temática e do estilo deste gênero discursivo e a sua relação com o jornalismo literário. Na investigação, aponta-se que o obituário brasileiro apresenta elementos que permitem comprovar a hipótese de que este enunciado enquadra-se como um gênero jornalístico informativo e utilitário, utilizando-se do diversional como recurso estilístico para amenizar o peso da morte, buscando uma forma de celebração da vida. This article aims to accomplish an analysis about recreation activities that are in the obituaries of the Ukrainian immigrant journal Pracia. For this finality, there were collected 251 obituaries, published between the years of 2001 and 2014, on basis of the methodological principles of Documental Research and Content Analysis (CA). This period of timeframe is justified by the availability of the material, which is filed in Graphic Prudentópolis, where this previously mentioned journal is made. It is important to note that this research consider the recreation concept related to “free time", proposed by Elias and Dunning (1992). Based from data analysis, it is possible to affirm that recreation practices carried out in that specific community are influenced by religious principles, not only guide the free time activities such as other cultural practices. Ioana M. Padure & Sanja Šimić present the morphology of the pollen of the Istrian endemic orchid Ophrys istriensis, just described in 2016, by electron microscopy photos.-30 collaborators have revised 1008 specimens (+ 1444 duplicates) from the "Herbarium Istriacum" (KL) and 628 specimens from other, 6 public herbaria (GJO, GZU, IBF, KL, W, WHB) und 3 private herbaria (Herb. F. Essl, A-Wien; Herb. P. Pilsl, ASalzburg; Herb. H. Zwander, A-Köttmannsdorf). The duplicates from the "Herbarium Istriacum" are distributed to 28 public institutions (B, BKF, CL, CLF, GJO, GZU, IBF, JACA, KL, LE, LG, LI, LJU, M, MA, MBM, NHMR, OSC, PE, R, TK, TSB, UBC, US, W, WU, WHB, ZA) and to 3 private herbaria (Herb. G. Gottschlich, D-Tübingen; Herb. J.-P. Reduron, F-Mülhausen; Herb. I. Uhlemann, D-Liebenau bei Dresden). As Main (1999) noted in her obituary for Mary Ainsworth, 'she was interacting weekly by letter and manuscript with her mentor and friend, John Bowlby, and their academic correspondence formed an important part of her, and implicitly our, life.' These letters of Ainsworth to John Bowlby during the 1980s, available in the Wellcome Trust Library in London, contain valuable reflections on the work of her pupils to extend her system of classifying infant behaviour in the Strange Situation Procedure. Mary Main proposed a D classification and interpreted such behaviour as a breakdown in an ABC strategy caused by a conflict between a disposition to approach and flee from the caregiver. Patricia Crittenden extended the subtypes of A and C, using a developmental model of information processing, and observed that they could be used together in A/C combinations. These letters offer insight into Ainsworth's intellectual rationale for encouraging both Main and Crittenden in their conflicting endeavours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study demonstrates how reporter-written obituaries of Black civil rights movement leaders reinforce a limited, facile view of the African American freedom struggle that haunts even today’s race relations. The obituaries remember a movement that Julian Bond characterized as “a morality play” of “Black saints” against “southern White sinners.” What these articles remember—and in some cases forget—is critical because collective memory research shows that obituaries reflect what the present thinks of the past. Five nostalgic, racialized frames emerge from these obituaries: (a) the importance of violence inflicted on Blacks, (b) the importance of the dutiful suffering endured by Blacks, (c) news media’s documentation of White southern oppression, (d) the salience and valence of the early-1960s Martin Luther King Jr., and (e) the idealism of integration over Black nationalist goals. Abstract: The recent publication of three books on Maria Gaetana Agnesi (1718–1799) offers an opportunity to reflect on how we have understood and misunderstood her legacy to the history of mathematics, as the author of an important vernacular textbook, Instituzioni analitiche ad uso della gioventú italiana (Milan, 1748), and one of the best-known women natural philosophers and mathematicians of her generation. This article discusses the work of Antonella Cupillari, Franco Minonzio, and Massimo Mazzotti in relation to earlier studies of Agnesi and reflects on the current state of this subject in light of the author’s own research on Agnesi. Background: One aspect of brain death is cardiovascular deregulation because asystole invariably occurs shortly after its diagnosis. A suitable neural substrate for mechanistic delineation of this aspect of brain death resides in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM). RVLM is the origin of a life-and-death signal that our laboratory detected from blood pressure of comatose patients that disappears before brain death ensues. At the same time, transcriptional upregulation of heme oxygenase-1 in RVLM by hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) plays a pro-life role in experimental brain death, and HIF-1α is subject to sumoylation activated by transient cerebral ischemia. It follows that sumoylation of HIF-1α in RVLM in response to hypoxia may play a modulatory role on brain stem cardiovascular regulation during experimental brain death. Methodology/Principal Findings: A clinically relevant animal model that employed mevinphos as the experimental insult in Sprague-Dawley rat was used. Biochemical changes in RVLM during distinct phenotypes in systemic arterial pressure spectrum that reflect maintained or defunct brain stem cardiovascular regulation were studied. Western blot analysis, EMSA, ELISA, confocal microscopy and immunoprecipitation demonstrated that drastic tissue hypoxia, elevated levels of proteins conjugated by small ubiquitin-related modifier-1 (SUMO-1), Ubc9 (the only known conjugating enzyme for the sumoylation pathway) or HIF-1α, augmented sumoylation of HIF-1α, nucleus-bound translocation and enhanced transcriptional activity of HIF-1α in RVLM neurons took place preferentially during the pro-life phase of experimental brain death. Furthermore, loss-of-function manipulations by immunoneutralization of SUMO-1, Ubc9 or HIF-1α in RVLM blunted the upregulated nitric oxide synthase I/protein kinase G signaling cascade, which sustains the brain stem cardiovascular regulatory machinery during the pro-life phase. Conclusions/Significance: We conclude that sumoylation of HIF-1α in RVLM ameliorates brain stem cardiovascular regulatory failure during experimental brain death via upregulation of nitric oxide synthase I/protein kinase G signaling. In 1934, during twenty-eight years of wandering west China, the American botanist Joseph Francis Charles Rock made a brief trip to England. He clipped the obituary of an old friend from the Times and pasted it in his diary. On the facing page, he pasted a photograph two decades old, and wrote this caption:J. F. Abstract: The US American pathologist and microbiologist Howard Taylor Ricketts died 100 years ago. He is renowned for discovering the causative organism and the transmission route of Rocky Mountain spotted fever and of tabardillo – an epidemic louse-borne typhus occurring especially in Mexico. He also found that both diseases were caused by related infectious agents (Rickettsia rickettsii and Rickettsia prowazekii). The scientific community therefore named both a taxonomic family (Rickettsiaceae) and an order (Rickettsiales) after the scientist. Ricketts’ work on immunity and serums became the basis for further advances in vaccine development. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper honors E. Scott Maynes, who died on June 24, 2007 and had been a professor emeritus in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University. The paper describes Scott's scholarly legacy in research, highlighting four areas: survey research methods, research using data from Surveys of Consumer Finances, Scott's studies of local consumer markets, and two significant books Scott Maynes authored. The author of this memorial paper concludes that Scott's scholarly legacy is neither a new theory nor a new statistical technique but the importance of vision, passion, perseverance, commitment, and creativity for the applied social science researcher. The article discusses news and events related to the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA). At an annual meeting for the TSHA held in Austin, Texas, history professor Walter L. Buenger was appointed president of the TSHA and Merline Pitre was elected as second vice president. Obituaries for historians Dorman Hayward Winfrey and Lou Rodenberger are presented. The TSHA has secured donations for the establishment of a chair in Texas history at the University of North Texas. Information on a joint meeting of the East Texas Historical Association and the West Texas Historical Association to be held in Fort Worth, Texas on February 26-28, 2010 is presented.

DeBakey journalism awards which include Carrie Peyton Dahlberg, Sara Burnett, and Robert Bazell. The Coalition for Medical Progress has launched its two new publications. Meanwhile, an obituary for John Heckford Seamer is presented.

The article discusses the death of journalist Ridkard Kapuscinski in Ecuador. The author presents several interviews with students of the former journalist, including the Peruvian writer Julio Villanueva Chang who was a former pupil of Kapuscinski. Born into a poor Polish family in the 1930s, Kapuscinski had a passion for reporting on the common, marginalised peoples. In his eyes, journalism was not just a profession but rather a social mission. He states that working under the socialist regime in Poland was difficult due to the various measures imposed by the government to censure journalists.

The article discusses various reports published within the issue, including one on obituaries for several notable people and another on the ninth biennial conference of the Borneo Research Council.

Objective. To determine cause and manner of death for consecutive infant deaths in the Aberdeen Area of the Indian Health Service (AAIHS) from 1998 to 2002 and to identify risk markers for infant mortality. Methods. Infant deaths in the AAIHS were identified from four data sources: death certificates from the four states in the AAIHS, deaths reported by local IHS Service Units, from obituaries in local and regional newspapers, and deaths reported by area hospitals. Each infant death is then sent to the local IHS service unit for review, where data from the infant and mother's chart is extracted and recorded. Local community factors, birth and death certificates, and autopsy reports are collected. The case is then reviewed at the Perinatal Infant Mortality Review (PIMR) meeting and a cause and manner of death is assigned. Summary data for the cohort was examined and then compared by mortality category and three age-at-death groups. Results. Sudden infant death syndrome accounted for 33% of all infant deaths in the AAIHS. Prematurity was the second most prevalent cause-specific mortality category, accounting for 22% of all infant deaths. The authors found that infant mortality was surprisingly recurrent, with 32% of mothers of this infant having had a previous infant death. Conclusions. The PIMR committee requires substantial resources to support a review committee with appropriate expertise and their travel. Participation of local IHS staff and tribal members provides an important cultural and community perspective for the review process. Quality improvement changes are currently being implemented. These include increasing data on substance use, mental health needs, and reviews of fetal deaths. The process of mortality review has been very helpful in public education in the AAIHS.
