This paper proposes a method that allows the detection of trends in the frequency of extreme events and its attribution to changes in atmospheric dynamics characterized through Circulation Types (CTs). The method is applied to summer Extremely Hot Days (EHD) in Spain during the period 1958-2008. For carrying out this exercise, regional series of daily maximum temperature are derived from the regional dataset Spain02. Eight regions with different daily maximum temperature variability are identified. All of them exhibit important trends in the occurrence of EHDs, especially in inner regions. Links between the probability of EHD occurrence in the regions and CTs have been cal10 culated. Furthermore, the consistency of the results to the atmospheric variables used in defining the CTs is analyzed. Sea Level Pressure (SLP), Temperature at 850 hPa Level (T850) and Geopotential Height at 500 hPa Level (Z500) from the ERA40 dataset have been used for the six CT classifications obtained using the variables separately and in different combinations of pairs. The optimum choice of large scale variables depends on the region under consideration, being the combination SLP-T850 the one giving the most suitable characterization for most of them. Finally, an attribution exercise of the regional EHD trends to the dynamics is proposed. Results show that the maximum of attributable EHD trends to changes in dynamics in every region is always below 50%, being even lower than 20% in those regions with the largest EHD trends, mainly located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula (IP). The overview of papers dealing with the analysis of current and future climate change on the territory of Russia and their impact on the crop productivity is presented. Using the reanalysis data for 1950–2020, trends in air temperature and precipitation are estimated for different regions of Russia. This study determines the frequency, location and spatial extent of such large-area monthly thermal anomalies, which are referred to in this paper as continental-scale thermal anomalies (CTAs). The research was based on monthly mean air temperature values from 210 weather stations over the 68-year period 1951-2018. A CTA is defined as an anomaly when the monthly mean temperature exceeded the long-term average by at least 2 standard deviations at a minimum of 40 stations. This study attempts to explain the occurrence of such CTAs (negative CTAs- and positive CTAs+) in relation to the circulation conditions over Europe. In the years 1951-2018, there were 16 CTAs-(mainly in winter and autumn) and 25 CTAs+ (predominantly in summer). One manifestation of climate warming is the ever less frequent occurrence of CTAs- and a growing frequency and spatial extent of CTAs+. The immediate cause behind CTAs was the occurrence of characteristic synoptic situations, leading to intensified advection of cold or hot air masses, often driven by radiation factors. The formation of CTAs- was much more often associated with very extensive and long-lasting anticyclonic systems, and that the associated synoptic situations over Europe lasted much longer than in the case of CTAs+. A global problem facing humanity today is the changing planetary climate. The Earth's northern regions play an important role in processes that affect the environment on a global scale and serve as indicators of global natural changes, especially climate change. The currently observed climate changes in the Arctic, such as rising air temperature, shrinking ice cover, increased river runoff, and permafrost degradation, have already shown that the Arctic is experiencing the greatest changes in comparison with other regions of the Earth. The response of the Arctic to all climatic change occurring on the planet is the strongest. The strong and rapid changes in the Arctic climate in recent years require comprehensive studies of their causes with assessment of the role of natural and anthropogenic factors. This paper analyzes the temporal changes in a number of Arctic climate indicators based on its main components (air temperature and oscillations in the atmospheric circulation, ocean waters, and ice cover extent) at time intervals of the 20th century, the period of anthropogenic impact on the climate, the last 2000 years, and the Holocene period, as well as the role of solar activity (cyclical changes and insolation) in climate change on the Earth. Trends in the variation in natural climate indicators are traced. Problems of prime importance for an understanding of the nature of current climate change and the main physical processes responsible for these changes are discussed. This paper studies the changes in winter air temperatures in the Siberian sector of the northern hemisphere (60–120° E) over a long-term period of 1947–2017. A positive trend in air temperature (0.3°C/10 years) was revealed. An analysis of the magnitude and frequency of temperature anomalies also confirms an increase in surface temperature. The distribution of large positive and negative temperature anomalies was investigated. Centers of the largest recurrence of large negative anomalies were located in the south and south-west of the study area. A maximum number of negative anomalies were observed in December. Large positive anomalies (the highest frequency in January) were observed throughout the territory under consideration, and extremely large anomalies were found only at 20% of the stations. The largest number of anomalies in the period of 1947–2017 was observed at the Irkutsk station. Based on the analysis of elementary circulation mechanisms (classification by B.L. Dzerdzeevskii), a relationship was established between the atmospheric circulation and the distribution of air temperature anomalies. It was concluded that the temperature regime in the winter months was formed under the influence of 26 elementary circulation mechanisms, combined into seven groups. The meridional circulation prevailed (75% of cases). The elementary circulation mechanisms of the meridional northern circulation group were all characterized by the presence of blockings and intrusions of southern cyclones into the study area. The primary objective of this paper was to determine the circulation conditions of the occurrence of cold spells in Poland and Germany. The observed inconsiderable warming slightly contributed to a change in the number of cold days and cold spells. The occurrence of cold spells in Poland and Germany was related to considerably more active and intensive pressure systems than on average in the winter season in the studied years. A strong high pressure system was located over much of the continent, blocking westerly circulation. During the occurrence of cold spells, negative anomalies of isobaric surface heights were recorded with the greatest anomalies being in the 300–250 hPa heights. The highest air temperature anomalies were recorded on the lowest isobaric levels, where they amounted to <−10°C. On average, anomalies on the 300 hPa isobaric level began developing approximately 9 days before the beginning of cold spells over the study area. The decay of cold spells was not related to rapid exchange of air masses, but rather to gradual weakening of anomalies in the upper troposphere, and their shifting westwards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cold extremes have large impacts on human society. Understanding the physical processes dominating the changes in cold extremes is crucial for a reliable projection of future climate change. The observed cold extremes have decreased during the last several decades, and this trend will continue under future global warming. Here, we quantitatively identify the contributions of dynamic (changes in large-scale atmospheric circulation) and thermodynamic (rising temperatures resulting from global warming) effects to East Asian cold extremes in the past several decades and in a future warm climate by using two sets of large-ensemble simulations of climate models. We show that the dynamic component accounts for over 80 % of the cold-month (coldest 5 % boreal winter months) surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly over the past 5 decades. However, in a future warm climate, the thermodynamic change is the main contributor to the decreases in the intensity and occurrence probability of East Asian cold extremes, while the dynamic change is also contributive. The intensity of East Asian cold extremes will decrease by around 5 °C at the end of the 21st century, in which the thermodynamic (dynamic) change contributes approximately 75 % (25 %). The present-day (1986–2005) East Asian cold extremes will almost never occur after around 2035, and this will happen 10 years later due solely to thermodynamic change. The upward trend of a positive Arctic Oscillation-like sea level pressure pattern dominates the changes in the dynamic component. East Asia is a region that is highly vulnerable to drought disasters during the spring season, as this period is critical for planting, germinating, and growing staple crops such as wheat, maize, and rice. The climate in East Asia is significantly influenced by three large-scale climate variations: the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. In this study, the spring meteorological drought was quantified using the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) for March, April, and May. Initially, coupled climate networks were established for two climate variables: sea surface temperature (SST) and SPEI. The directed links from SST to SPEI were determined based on the Granger causality test. These coupled climate networks revealed the associations between climate variations and meteorological droughts, indicating that semi-arid areas are more sensitive to these climate variations. In the spring, PDO and ENSO do not cause extreme wetness or dryness in East Asia, whereas IOD does. The remote impacts of these climate variations on SPEI can be partially explained by atmospheric circulations, where the combined effects of air temperatures, winds, and air pressure fields determine the wet/dry conditions in East Asia. This study describes the regularities in spatial and multiannual variations in the occurrence of last spring frost (LSF), first fall frost (FFF) and the length of the frost-free season (FFS). In the paper, daily minimum and maximum air temperatures recorded at 20 stations in Poland in 1951-2015 and a calendar of synoptic situations were used. It was found that at 75% of the analyzed stations the FFS period grew longer and the changes were statistically significant. Clearly, the longer length of the season is attributable to the earlier LSF dates. The frosts under investigation were recorded most frequently in anticyclonic situations, especially in the presence of an anticyclonic wedge (Ka) and a central anticyclone situation (Ca). This paper presents a ten-member ensemble of twentieth century Ocean ReAnalyses called ORA-20C. ORA-20C assimilates temperature and salinity profiles and is forced by the ECMWF twentieth century atmospheric reanalysis (ERA-20C) over the 1900-2010 period. This study attempts to identify robust signals of ocean heat content change in ORA-20C and detect contamination by model errors, initial condition uncertainty, surface fluxes and observing system changes. It is shown that ORA-20C trends and variability in the first part of the century result from the surface fluxes and model drift towards a warmer mean state and weak meridional overturning circulation. The impact of the observing system in correcting the mean state causes the deceleration of the warming trend and alters the long-term climate signal. The ensemble spread reflects the long-lasting memory of the initial conditions and the convergence of the system to a solution compatible with surface fluxes, the ocean model and observational constraints. Observations constrain the ocean heat uptake trend in the last decades of the twentieth century, which is similar to trend estimations from the post-satellite era. An ocean heat budget analysis attributes ORA-20C heat content changes to surface fluxes in the first part of the century. The heat flux variability reflects spurious signals stemming from ERA-20C surface fields, which in return result from changes in the atmospheric observing system. The influence of the temperature assimilation increments on the heat budget is growing with time. Increments control the most recent ocean heat uptake signals, highlighting imbalances in forced reanalysis systems in the ocean as well as in the atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The parameterization of physical processes is one of the critical elements to properly simulate the regional climate over eastern China. It is essential to conduct detailed analyses on the effect of physical parameterization schemes on regional climate simulation, to provide more reliable regional climate change information. In this paper, we evaluate the 25-year (1983-2007) summer monsoon climate characteristics of precipitation and surface air temperature by using the regional spectral model (RSM) with different physical schemes. The ensemble results using the reliability ensemble averaging (REA) method are also assessed. The result shows that the RSM model has the capacity to reproduce the spatial patterns, the variations, and the temporal tendency of surface air temperature and precipitation over eastern China. And it tends to predict better climatology characteristics over the Yangtze River basin and the South China. The impact of different physical schemes on RSM simulations is also investigated. Generally, the CLD3 cloud water prediction scheme tends to produce larger precipitation because of its overestimation of the low-level moisture. The systematic biases derived from the KF2 cumulus scheme are larger than those from the RAS scheme. The scale-selective bias correction (SSBC) method improves the simulation of the temporal and spatial characteristics of surface air temperature and precipitation and advances the circulation simulation capacity. The REA ensemble results show significant improvement in simulating temperature and precipitation distribution, which have much higher correlation coefficient and lower root mean square error. A main source of regional climate change uncertainty is the large disparity across models in simulating the atmospheric circulation response to global warming. Using the latest suite of global climate models from the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), a storyline approach is adopted to derive physically plausible scenarios of Antarctic climate change for 2070–99, according to Shared Socioeconomic Pathway SSP5-8.5. These storylines correspond to differences in the simulated amount of seasonal sea ice loss and either (i) the delay in the summertime stratospheric polar vortex (SPV) breakdown or (ii) wintertime SPV strengthening, which together constitute robust drivers of the response pattern to future climate change. Such changes combined are known to exert a strong control over the Southern Hemisphere midlatitude jet stream, which we quantify as collectively explaining up to 70% of the variance in jet response in summer and 35% in winter. For summer, the expected strengthening and displacement of the tropospheric jet stream varies between a ∼1 and 2 m s−1 increase and ∼2°–4° poleward shift, respectively, across storylines. In both seasons, a larger strengthening of the jet is correlated with less Antarctic warming. By contrast, the response in precipitation is more consistent but still strongly attenuated by large-scale dynamics. We find that an increase in high-latitude precipitation around Antarctica is more pronounced for storylines characterized by a greater poleward jet shift, particularly in summer. Our results highlight the usefulness of the storyline approach in illustrating model uncertainty and understanding the processes that determine the spread in projected Antarctic regional climate response. Significance Statement: Uncertainty in future climate predictions for the Antarctic is dominated by the unknown response of the large-scale (global) atmospheric circulation. In characterizing such uncertainty, plausible outcomes of climate response (storylines) are generated from the organization of model projections according to the amount of simulated seasonal sea ice loss and the delay in summertime breakdown/winter strengthening of the stratospheric westerly circulation (polar vortex). The intensity and location of the tropospheric jet stream is strongly dependent on both factors, which strongly influences the near-surface climate response over Antarctica. We find that the simulated amount that Antarctic air temperatures increase by in the future (to the end of the century) is intrinsically related to the projected intensification of the Southern Hemisphere tropospheric jet, varying by a factor of 2 or more across storylines for summer. Storylines with greater jet strengthening are associated with less Antarctic warming (reduced poleward advection of air masses from lower latitudes). Similar differences are found for changes in jet position, which we note has a much stronger control on mid- to high-latitude precipitation response. The paper demonstrates that sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) can be simulated in an ensemble of dry dynamical cores that miss the typical SSW forcing mechanisms like moist processes, land-sea contrasts, or topography. These idealized general circulation model (GCM) simulations are driven by a simple Held-Suarez-Williamson (HSW) temperature relaxation and low-level Rayleigh friction. In particular, the four dynamical cores of NCAR's Community Atmosphere Model, version 5 (CAM5), are used, which are the semi-Lagrangian (SLD) and Eulerian (EUL) spectral-transform models and the finite-volume (FV) and the spectral element (SE) models. Three research themes are discussed. First, it is shown that SSW events in such idealized simulations have very realistic flow characteristics that are analyzed via the SLD model. A single vortex-split event is highlighted that is driven by wavenumber-1 and -2 wave-mean flow interactions. Second, the SLD simulations are compared to the EUL, FV, and SE dynamical cores, which sheds light on the impact of the numerical schemes on the circulation. Only SLD produces major SSWs, while others only exhibit minor stratospheric warmings. These differences are caused by SLD's more vigorous wave-mean flow interactions in addition to a warm pole bias, which leads to relatively weak polar jets in SLD. Third, it is shown that tropical quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO)-like oscillations and SSWs can coexist in such idealized HSW simulations. They are present in the SLD dynamical core that is used to analyze the QBO-SSW interactions via a transformed Eulerian-mean (TEM) analysis. The TEM results provide support for the Holton-Tan effect. The impact of climatic change can be on specific locations. However, the broader the affected area coverage, in mind, the higher would be the chance in missing critical details. In this light, this paper attempts to assess the possible climatic changes and their corresponding implications on agricultural production in northern Ethiopia. The analysis is based on the future (2030 and 2050) temperature and rainfall data, downscaled as ensemble of four general circulation models (GCMs) using the A2 and B1 emission scenarios for ten meteorological stations located in different agroecological zones of the study region. The result indicates that, based on emission scenarios, the mean maximum and minimum temperature would increase by 2-2.3 and 0.8-0.9 °C in 2030 and by 2.2-2.7 and 1.4-1.7 °C in 2050, respectively. This will be accompanied by an increase in the frequency of hot days and nights and a decrease in cool days and nights. While annual rainfall totals will remain unchanged, main rainy season ( kiremt) rainfall total would increase on average in 12.9 and 14.2 % under A2 and 9.5 and 11.2 % under B1 by 2030 and 2050, respectively. Owing to an increase in kiremt rainfall, the yield of maize and sorghum may increase at some sites under future climatic conditions, and the increase would be higher under CO fertilization. Climate change and the impacts of anthropogenic activity on climate in Europe is documented in many scientific publications but the investigations about climate impact and particularly urban climate are relatively few for Bulgaria. The present paper investigates the variability of seasonal and annual air temperature in Sofia city and surrounding areas (towns Bankya and Bozhurishte) for the period 1961-2015 based on the linear regression method. In order to investigate the urban heat island (UHI) intensity, the air temperature difference between the city and its surroundings is calculated. The study shows increase of air temperature difference between the city and suburban territories during the recent years. The ultimate goal of climate research is to produce climate predictions on various time scales. In China, efforts to predict the climate started in the 1930s. Experimental operational climate forecasts have been performed since the late 1950s, based on historical analog circulation patterns. However, due to the inherent complexity of climate variability, the forecasts produced at that time were fairly inaccurate. Only from the late 1980s has seasonal climate prediction experienced substantial progress, when the Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere project of the World Climate Research program (WCRP) was launched. This paper, following a brief description of the history of seasonal climate prediction research, provides an overview of these studies in China. Processes and factors associated with the climate variability and predictability are discussed based on the literature published by Chinese scientists. These studies in China mirror aspects of the climate research effort made in other parts of the world over the past several decades, and are particularly associated with monsoon research in East Asia. As the climate warms, climate extremes, their frequency, and intensity are projected to change, with a large possibility that they will increase. Thus, seasonal climate prediction is even more important for China in order to effectively mitigate disasters produced by climate extremes, such as frequent floods, droughts, and the heavy frozen rain events of South China. Observations and results of numerical experiments with climate models under different green-house-gas emission scenarios point to a reconstruction of the thermal and circulation atmospheric regime induced by global climate changes. In particular, an increase in atmospheric static stability, a poleward shift of midlatitude storm tracks, a decrease in the frequency of extratropical cyclones, and a change in their intensity are found at tropical and middle latitudes. This paper, using a simplified idealized model of baroclinic instability, investigates the influence of small variations in the basic atmospheric parameters governing the development of baroclinic instability, namely, static stability and the vertical quasi-zonal flow velocity shear induced by a meridional temperature gradient, on variations in the growth rate of the amplitude of synopticscale unstable waves. Analytical expressions are derived for absolute and relative sensitivity functions to estimate the absolute and relative contribution of variations in the static stability and the vertical flow velocity shear to a change in the growth rate of the amplitude of unstable modes. Being strongly influenced by internal climate variability, the atmospheric circulation response to greenhouse gas forcing in the future climate is uncertain. This study addresses atmospheric circulation through representative circulation types (CTs) and investigates the CTs' changes with respect to frequency and effect on surface temperature and precipitation over a pan-Scandinavian domain. The analysis is based on the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute Large Ensemble performed with EC-Earth3: 50-member ensembles from one historical and six scenario simulations for the twenty-first century are used to assess internal variability and significance of changes. Although the results show no strong future changes in the CTs' sea level pressure patterns, CT frequency changes suggest a future extension of summer conditions towards spring and autumn and point towards a clearer distinction between summer and winter. The present-climate CT effect on surface temperature is found to generally weaken which is consistent with a general decrease in temperature variability. Largest-scale and strongest temperature effect changes are projected between March and May for CT3, a cyclone towards the east of the domain associated with a domain-wide cooling effect that will likely be decreased towards the end of the twenty-first century. Similarly but of opposite sign, the CT effect on precipitation is strengthening as a result of the increased precipitation variability. Here, largest-scale and strongest effect enhancement is found for CT6, thus increasing its wetting effect over southern Scandinavia and drying effect west of the Scandes. This paper provides the results of semi-distributed positive degree-day (PDD) modelling for a glacierized river basin in Nepal. The main objective is to estimate the present and future discharge from the glacierized Langtang River basin using a PDD model (PDDM). The PDDM is calibrated for the period 1993-98 and is validated for the period 1999-2006 with Nash-Sutcliffe values of 0.85 and 0.80, respectively. Furthermore, the projected precipitation and temperature data from 2010 to 2050 are obtained from the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, Norway, for the representative concentration pathway 4.5 (RCP4.5) scenario. TheWeather Research and Forecasting regional climate model is used to downscale the data from the Norwegian Earth System Model general circulation model. Projected discharge shows no significant trend, but in the future during the pre-monsoon period, discharge will be high and the peak discharge will be in July whereas it is in August at present. The contribution of snow and ice melt from glaciers and snowmelt from rocks and vegetation will decrease in the future: in 2040-50 it will be just 50% of the total discharge. The PDDM is sensitive to monthly average temperature, as a 2°C temperature increase will increase the discharge by 31.9%. Changes in glacier area are less sensitive, as glacier area decreases of 25% and 50% result in a change in the total discharge of -5.7% and -11.4%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses day-to-day changes of weather types and links these with synoptic situations, i.e. circulation types, air masses and weather fronts. The weather types were classified according to Woś (1999), while a calendar proposed by Niedźwiedź (2013) was used for synoptic situations. Weather records from Kraków were used covering the period 1961-2010. The frequency of all combinations of day-to-day weather type changes was calculated, identified using specific values of air temperature, cloudiness and precipitation. The analysis of the succession and frequency of the day-to-day changes was linked with the synoptic situations accompanying the change. It was found that the thermal weather types were relatively very stable and remained unchanged on the following day in 61.3% of cases, and that the synoptic situation also remained similar. Weather subtypes, identified with just cloudiness and precipitation, but not temperature, displayed much more day-to-day change in terms of frequency and scale. Synoptically it was the air mass change and/or the occurrence of atmospheric fronts, which tended to cause day-to-day weather type changes, while the impact of circulation was not always clear. The article presents the biometeorological impact of thermal and humidity conditions on the human body in the Hornsund area in the southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard. This was determined based on diurnal air temperature range, the day-to-day variation in average diurnal air temperature and the average diurnal relative humidity. The temporal variability of thermal and humidity biometeorological stimuli in Hornsund was examined for the period 01.11.1978-31.12.2017. A lessening of biometeorological impact was found in the southern Spitsbergen region, including a statistically significant negative trend in strongly- and severely-felt stimuli (according to diurnal air temperature range), and in significant and severe stimuli (according to day-to-day variation in average diurnal air temperature). A non-significant positive trend was observed in the number of days of relative humidity with humid and very humid air. To analyse the spatial variability of the stimuli around the Hornsund fjord, data were used from seven year-round measuring stations for the period 01.07.2014-31.06.2015. The most unfavourable conditions were found on the Hans Glacier, on the summit of Fugleberget and inside the fjord. The paper presents the role of atmospheric circulation on thermal and humidity stimuli. In the Hornsund region, the highest probability of unfavourable sensible temperatures for humans occurring during the year was mostly in winter and early spring. This was related to the advection of air masses from the north-east sector, regardless of baric regime type. It was found that very humid air (> 85%) flowed over Hornsund for practically the entire year from the S-SW as part of both cyclonic and anti-cyclonic systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper traces the history of the use of ships' logbooks in climatological studies from the earliest days of the 17th century to the present day. Although early theories concerning global air circulations by Halley and Hadley were based on information gathered by mariners and recorded in their logbooks, it has only been in the last two decades that interest has returned to this important, but long-overlooked, source of climatic information. Attention is drawn to the many advantages offered by logbooks, in particular the long period of time that they collectively cover, their near-global geographic range, the large number of such documents that have survived, and the degree of detailed and reliable record that they provide. Before the mid-19th century, much of the recorded information is noninstrumental in character but its scientific potential is reflected in the variety of approaches and methods that have been used in its analysis and in the equally wide range of outcomes, from databases to synoptic charts and long-time series indices that have emerged from the most recent research. Attention is also drawn to the benefits to be derived from old and more recent instrumental logbook data. Linking sinuosity, a fairly recently developed metric, with high temperature extremes (HTEs) can be both useful and insightful to better understand the physical mechanisms behind HTEs. However, it is not clear whether there exists a relationship between the sinuosity changes and HTE changes in present and future climate conditions over southeastern China. In this paper, the anomalous characteristics of the atmospheric circulation are quantified by sinuosity. Three sinuosity metrics are used in this study: individual sinuosity (SIN), aggregate sinuosity (ASIN), and comprehensive sinuosity (CSIN). Furthermore, we examine the relationship between sinuosity changes and HTE changes in present and future climate conditions. ASIN is strongly correlated with surface air temperature (SAT). We find that the influence of individual sinuosity (SIN) at different latitudes on the SAT of southeastern China is different. The SIN of low (middle) latitude isohypses has significant positive (negative) correlations with the SAT of southeastern China. The SIN of high-latitude isohypses is rather limited and can therefore be ignored. The projected relationship between the sinuosity changes and HTE changes in the late 21st century suggests similar results. The change in SAT is related to the changes in climate variables over southeastern China in the future, and these changes increase with the increase in Z500 or V850 and the decrease in U500. Moreover, the frequencies of large (small) comprehensive sinuosity (CSIN) values at low (mid) latitudes will increase. At the end of the 21st century, Z500 isohypses at different latitudes will have an obvious poleward shift. Our results indicate that measuring the aggregate waviness of the midtropospheric flow (via sinuosity) can provide insight regarding HTEs, and the climate model output can be used to examine the future likelihood of increased HTE. Tropical warm pools appear as the primary mode in the distribution of tropical sea surface temperature (SST). Most previous studies have focused on the role of atmospheric processes in homogenizing temperatures in the warm pool and establishing the observed statistical SST distribution. In this paper, a hierarchy of models is used to illustrate both oceanic and atmospheric mechanisms that contribute to the establishment of tropical warm pools. It is found that individual atmospheric processes have competing effects on the SST distribution: atmospheric heat transport tends to homogenize SST, while the spatial structure of atmospheric humidity and surface wind speeds tends to remove homogeneity. The latter effects dominate, and under atmosphere-only processes there is no warm pool. Ocean dynamics counter this effect by homogenizing SST, and it is argued that ocean dynamics is fundamental to the existence of the warm pool. Under easterly wind stress, the thermocline is deep in the west and shallow in the east. Because of this, poleward Ekman transport of water at the surface, compensated by equatorward geostrophic flow below and linked by equatorial upwelling, creates a cold tongue in the east but homogenizes SST in the west, creating a warm pool. High clouds may also homogenize the SST by reducing the surface solar radiation over the warmest water, but the strength of this feedback is quite uncertain. The relative importance of the processes responsible for the annual cycle in the upper-ocean heat content in the Peru Current, in the southeastern tropical Pacific, was diagnosed from an oceanic analysis dataset. It was found that the annual cycle of heat content is forced mainly by insolation. However, the ocean dynamical processes play an important role in producing different regional budget characteristics. In a band 500 km from the coast of Peru, the annual heat content changes in this region are relatively large and can be approximated as sea surface temperature (SST) changes in a fixed-depth mixed layer. The annual cycle of the albedo associated with low-level clouds enhances the annual cycle in insolation, which explains the relatively strong annual cycle of heat content. These clouds, to a large extent, act as a feedback to SST, but a small additional forcing, which is proposed to be cold air advection in this paper, is needed to explain the fact that the maximum cloudiness leads the lowest SST by around a month. Ocean dynamics is important closer to the coast, where upwelling acts partly as damping of the heat content changes and forces it to peak earlier than farther offshore. In a band farther to the southwest, locally wind-forced thermocline motions, which become shallower (deeper) in the warm (cool) season, partially cancel the effect of net surface heat fluxes, whose annual cycle is comparable to that in the region previously mentioned, producing a relatively small annual cycle of heat content. The local forcing appears to be associated with the annual meridional displacements of the South Pacific anticyclone. The annual cycle in SST is also relatively small, which is probably due to the changes in the temperature of the water entrained into the mixed layer associated with the thermocline motions, but also to a mixed layer deeper than that closer to the coast. Associations between tropospheric ozone (O3) and climate variations have been extensively investigated worldwide. However, given the lack of historical O3 monitoring data, the knowledge gaps regarding the influences of climate variations on long-term O3 trends in China remain. The present study used a unique tropospheric O3 dataset from the summer of 1999 to 2017 simulated by an atmospheric chemistry model to explore the linkage between summer O3 and a dominant atmospheric circulation system – the Western Pacific Subtropical High Pressure (WPSH) on an interannual basis in China. During this period, both WPSH strength and O3 concentrations in eastern and central China illustrated a growing trend. An EOF analysis was conducted to examine significant summer O3 characteristics and patterns and their potential connections with the WPSH. We show that the WPSH determines interannual fluctuations of summer O3, whereas O3 precursor emissions contribute primarily to the O3 long-term trend. Special efforts were made to discern the associations of O3 variations in major urban agglomerations of China and the WPSH. The results reveal that the WPSH plays a more vital role in O3 perturbation in the eastern seaboard regions and inland China, but leads to lower O3 levels in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. Precursor emissions made more significant contributions up to 60 % to increasing O3 trends in the inland urban agglomerations than coastal regions in eastern and southern China. The strongest contribution of meteorological conditions associated with the WPSH to summer ozone concentration occurred in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), accounting for over 9 % to ozone perturbations from 1999 to 2017. Overall, we find that the effect of the WPSH on regional O3 depends on the spatial proximity to the WPSH. We attributed the effects of the WPSH on O3 interannual variations to the changes in air temperature, precipitation, and winds associated with the WPSH's intensity and positions. The increase of atmospheric CO2 concentrations changes the atmospheric temperature distribution, which in turn affects the circulation. A robust circulation response to CO2 forcing is the strengthening of the stratospheric Brewer-Dobson circulation (BDC), with associated consequences for transport of trace gases such as ozone. Ozone is further affected by the CO2-induced stratospheric cooling via the temperature dependency of ozone chemistry. These ozone changes in turn influence stratospheric temperatures and thereby modify the CO2-induced circulation changes. In this study, we perform dedicated model simulations to quantify the modification of the circulation response to CO2 forcing by stratospheric ozone. Specifically, we compare simulations of the atmosphere with preindustrial and with quadrupled CO2 climate conditions, in which stratospheric ozone is held fixed or is adapted to the new climate state. The results of the residual circulation and mean age of air show that ozone changes damp the CO2-induced BDC increase by up to 20%. This damping of the BDC strengthening is linked to an ozone-induced relative enhancement of the meridional temperature gradient in the lower stratosphere in summer, thereby leading to stronger stratospheric easterlies that suppress wave propagation. Additionally, we find a systematic weakening of the polar vortices in winter and spring. In the Southern Hemisphere, ozone reduces the CO2-induced delay of the final warming date by 50%. Recent studies show an increase in the frequency of compound extremes in air temperature and precipitation in many parts of the world, especially under dry and hot conditions. Compound extremes have a significant impact on all spheres of human activity, such as health, agriculture, and energy. Features of atmospheric circulation are closely related to the occurrence of anomalies in air temperature and precipitation. The article analyzes the relationship of atmospheric circulation modes with compound extremes that have had the greatest impact on the Atlantic–European region over the territory of Eastern Europe over the past 60 years on extreme air temperature and precipitation. Combinations of extreme temperature and humidity conditions (indices)—cold-dry (CD), cold-wet (CW), warm-dry (WD) and warm-wet (WW)—were used as compound extremes. Indices of compound extremes were calculated according to the E-OBS reanalysis data. Estimates of the relationship between two time series were carried out using standard correlation and composite analyses, as well as cross wavelet analysis. Phase relationships and time intervals for different climatic indices were different. The period of most fluctuations in the indices of compound extremes was from 4 to 12 years and was observed during 1970–2000. The coherent fluctuations in the time series of the WD and WW indices and the North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) index occurred rather in phase, those in the time series of the CD and WD indices and the Arctic oscillation (AO) index occurred in antiphase, and those in the time series of the WD and WW indices and the Scandinavia pattern (SCAND) index occurred in antiphase. Statistically significant increase in the number of warm compound extremes was found for the northern parts of the study region in the winter season with positive NAO and AO phases. This paper focuses on the relationship between atmospheric circulation and solid precipitation (SP) happening in the weather station of Isola 2000. Located in the French department of the Alpes-Maritimes at an altitude of 1912 m, it has the oldest series of daily SP and snow depth (SD) observations from the department. Study has two objectives, analyzed past orientations concerning air temperature, SP and SD, then, characterizes and explains the atmospheric circulation condition producing SP. Results show a warming of air temperature since the early 2000s, counterintuitive accompanied by an increase in the frequency of SP and a larger thickness of SD. In addition, by crossing SP observations with ERA-INTERIM reanalysis (EI-R), seven covariations have been measured: vertical velocity 700 hPa; specific humidity 850 hPa; sea level pressure; air temperature 850 hPa; geopotential height 700 hPa; U-component of wind 700 hPa, V-component of wind 700 hPa. The mapping of these variables shows two types of atmospheric circulation implicated in SP: westerly cyclonic circulation, producing SP in the range of 1–5 cm and 6–20 cm; southern circulation with a depression focused on Iceland and a trough on Western Europe, causing SP in the range of 21–40 cm and 41–93 cm. Climate change affects atmospheric circulation patterns and intensifies recurrent extreme weather events across the globe. It has resulted in increasing air temperatures, rising sea levels, and alterations in precipitation patterns, which will immensely influence the hydro-environment regime in semi-enclosed water bodies (e.g., gulfs and estuaries). The Persian Gulf (PG), the world's hottest sea, is a regional hotspot for climate change. This study investigates how the interplay between climate change and the meteorological variables affects salinity, temperature, and density of water mass concerning water circulation patterns (WCPs) in PG. It contributes to representing a perspective of meteorological conditions over the region and projecting expected seasonal variations of PG hydro-physical properties at the beginning of the next decade. For these purposes, we used the downscaled data of 2030 under RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5 (representative concentration pathway) scenarios to run the hydrodynamic model and also used a 54-year time series (1948–2002) for reference model representing the historical state (HS). The findings project distinguishable temperature rise (reaching 37 °C in summer over vast areas), salinity rise in most parts (up to +5.4 practical salinity units relative to HS at the northwestern head in spring), and an increase in vertical density gradients leading to an increase in speeds of surface currents. These alterations in physical properties significantly influence chemical and biological processes in PG, potentially resulting in aquatic degradation and ecological issues. Using the data of the ERA-Interim reanalysis, we have obtained estimates of changes in temperature, the geopotential and its large-scale zonal harmonics, wind velocity, and potential vorticity in the troposphere and stratosphere of the Northern and Southern hemispheres during the 11-year solar cycle. The estimates have been obtained using the method of multiple linear regression. Specific features of response of the indicated atmospheric parameters to the solar cycle have been revealed in particular regions of the atmosphere for a whole year and depending on the season. The results of the analysis indicate the existence of a reliable statistical relationship of large-scale dynamic and thermodynamic processes in the troposphere and stratosphere with the 11-year solar cycle. The response of the Euro‐Atlantic wintertime circulation to climate change is deeply uncertain. The Atlantic jet is caught in a "tug‐of‐war" between rapid warming trends in both the tropics and the Arctic leading to debate over the changing "waviness" of the jet, which is subject to strong non‐linearity and internal variability. From the complementary perspective of weather regimes, there is considerable uncertainty in how atmospheric blocking will alter under climate change. By applying the hybrid approach of geopotential‐jet regimes to 6th phase of the coupled model inter‐comparison project projections, we show that the centers of action of anticyclonic regimes hardly alter even under severe warming. Instead, regimes are expected to become less persistent, with zonal flow conditions becoming more prevalent, although models disagree on the details of regime changes. Finally, we show the regime response can be captured qualitatively in a simple Lorenz‐like model, emphasizing the conceptual link between observed regimes and those in basic mathematical systems. Plain Language Summary: The impact of climate change on European weather can be broken into two components: a thermodynamic part relating to increasing air temperature and humidity, and a dynamic part relating to changes in the atmospheric circulation such as the direction and strength of prevailing winds. While the thermodynamic part is relatively well understood, the dynamic part is very uncertain and this is a major problem in constraining European climate projections. Looking at the winter season, we study the dynamic response of CMIP6 models under climate change using so‐called "regimes," and show that the types of prevailing circulation are not predicted to change strongly. Understanding the spatial–temporal changes in glacier mass balance and associated drivers on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is important for predicting future water supplies and glacier-related hazards. However, the comparative study of changes in glacier mass balance in different regions of the same glacierized massif on the TP remains scarce. Combining the reconstructed detailed mass balance time-series from 1970 to 2015 for Ningchan No.1 Glacier in the eastern Qilian Mountains and Qiyi Glacier in the western Qilian Mountains using the energy and mass balance model in this work with the published mass balance data from different glaciers, we find that interannual changes in glacier mass balance are broadly similar in different regions of the Qilian Mountains. These interannual changes are primarily driven by variations in ablation-season (June–September) air temperature (Ta), which impact albedo and melt by changing snowfall and incoming longwave radiation (Lin). We link such interannual mass balance variability to the combination of changes in atmospheric circulation over Europe and changes in sea surface temperature (SST) in the Northwest Pacific during the ablation season which can cause the changes in Ta across the Qilian Mountains. In addition, we find a trend of increasingly negative glacier mass balance across the Qilian Mountains from 1970–1994 compared to 1995–2015. This interdecadal trend is driven by higher ablation-season Ta through increasing Lin and through increasing precipitation falling as rain. Lastly, higher glacier mass loss in the east than in the west Qilian Mountains from 1970–1994 and 1995–2015 was mainly caused by lower glacier area-altitude distribution, as well as a reduction in ablation-season precipitation in the eastern Qilian Mountains. This study investigates the association of spring (April–May) Arctic sea ice melt with simultaneous surface air temperature (SAT) over mid-high latitudes of Eurasia from 1979 to 2019 by using observational datasets and simulation experiments. The results show that spring SAT anomalies associated with Arctic sea ice melt display a dipole pattern over Eurasia. A high Arctic sea ice melt corresponds to positive SAT anomalies over northern Eurasia and negative SAT anomalies over most of Asia. The 500 hPa geopotential height anomalies exhibit a wave train structure, and a dominant positive center is located over the Ural Mountains with two negative centers over East Asia and western Europe. This atmospheric circulation anomaly differs from the traditional Eurasian pattern and the North Atlantic-Eurasian teleconnection pattern due to their different spatial modes. Simulation experiments forced by Arctic sea ice anomalies reproduce the major characteristics of observational associations. Observations and numerical simulations indicate that high Arctic sea ice melt years are often associated with heavy sea ice in winter-spring, which is favorable for the occurrence of Arctic anticyclonic circulation anomaly and lead to a positive SAT anomaly in the Arctic. The Arctic warming not only strengthens polar zonal westerly winds by increasing local baroclinicity, but also weakens zonal winds in mid-latitude through a reduction meridional temperature gradient. It may contribute to the Arctic anticyclonic anomalies enhancement, and then induces a wave train southeastward propagating into the mid-low latitudes. A study is made of the changes in climatic characteristics such as air temperature, atmospheric pressure, and precipitation and their relationship with the large-scale atmospheric circulation over Siberia for the climatically significant time interval of 1979‒2018. The study area is limited to 50°‒70° N and 60°‒110° E. Daily observational data from NOAA GSOD are used in calculating the series of territory-averaged values of surface temperature, atmospheric pressure, and average precipitation. The characteristics of baric formations of cyclones and anticyclones are determined on the basis of surface synoptic maps for standard meteorological periods. It is found that, by the end of the study period, the trend in surface temperature and precipitation is positive and the trend in atmospheric pressure is negative. The trend in characteristics of baric formations, such as the number of cyclones and anticyclones, is positive, as is the pressure trend in the centers of anticyclones. On the contrary, the pressure trend in the centers of cyclones is negative, as is the trend in the duration of the impact of cyclones and anticyclones. It is shown that these trends underwent the most dramatic changes during 2012‒2018, with a change of sign of the trend in pressure in the centers of anticyclones. Taking into consideration the close relationship between climatic characteristics and large-scale atmospheric circulation, it can be suggested that the warming in Siberia before 2012 was due to a weakening of anticyclonic activity and after 2012 it was due to an increase in cyclonic activity. We analyzed trends of air temperature across the Cévennes National Park in Southern France, a mid-altitude coastal mountain experiencing a rapid spread of forests at the expense of rangelands and submitted to Mediterranean Sea influences and so, impacted by local and regional processes of climate change. Since 1980, April to June warming trend reached a maximum temperature increase of + 0.124 °C year−1 and uniform whatever the altitude. Minimum temperature increased by + 0.058 °C year−1 at 500 m altitude and + 0.089 °C year−1 at 1500 m. Concomitantly, forest cover is increasing by + 0.51% year−1. Using an intrinsic biophysical mechanism model, we demonstrated that, at monthly scale, the forest surface is 1.7–3.1 °C cooler than that of nearby grasslands. As a result, the decrease in albedo corresponding to the conversion from grasslands to dense forests, translates into a cooling of maximum air temperatures of 0.023 °C year−1 which contributes to slow down the warming rate enhancement. Spring warming trends co-varied with negative WeMO phases associated with a low in the Gulf of Cádiz and an anticyclone in Central Europe. An east to west pressure gradient increases atmospheric humidity leading to a strong water vapor feedback, enhancing the forcing of thermal long wave radiations and hence the rise in temperature. This study reveals the dynamics in the number and intensity of heat waves in Bulgaria in the late 20th and early twenty-first century, as well as their impact on forest fires in the beginning of this century. Statistical methods such as linear regression and Spearman's correlation were the main tools of this study. Multiple linear regression models were used in order to reveal the complex influence of heat wave characteristics on forest fires in Bulgaria. Over the last four decades, there has been a statistically significant trend of increasing number of days belonging to heat waves. There is no significant trend (except in southwestern Bulgaria) in the average maximum temperatures of heat waves in the period 1979–2021. This is due to a change in the atmospheric circulation over Bulgaria in the twenty-first century toward increased transport of air masses from northeast in summer. The heat waves have a significant impact on the forest fires in Bulgaria in summer. In general, more, longer and having higher air temperatures heat waves provide more favorable conditions for the occurrence and development of forest fires. The results of this study can serve to build on the existing methodology for determining the risk of forest fires in the territory of Bulgaria, including factors such as the total duration and intensity of heat waves. Changes in air temperature, precipitation, and the Toplica river discharge were investigated. Annual and seasonal climatic data were collected at weather stations Kursumlija and Prokuplje, and discharge data on hydrological gauges Pepeljevac and Doljevac. The data covered a period of 62 years (1957-2018). Mann-Kendall and Pettitt's tests have been applied for the periods 1957-2018, 1957-1987, 1988-2018, and 1975-1994, which we find as very important period when atmospheric circulation was altered. Mean annual temperature and precipitation were greater in the second half-period, while the discharge was smaller, even all the signals had growth trend. Mean seasonal temperature increased for all seasons, as well as precipitation, except for summer (JJA). Despite the development of sophisticated statistical and dynamical climate models, a relative long-term and reliable prediction of the Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) has remained a challenging problem. Toward achieving this goal, here we construct a series of dynamical and physical climate networks based on the global near-surface air temperature field. We show that some characteristics of the directed and weighted climate networks can serve as efficient long-term predictors for ISMR forecasting. The developed prediction method produces a forecasting skill of 0.54 (Pearson correlation) with a 5-month lead time by using the previous calendar year's data. The skill of our ISMR forecast is better than that of operational forecasts models, which have, however, quite a short lead time. We discuss the underlying mechanism of our predictor and associate it with network–ENSO and ENSO–monsoon connections. Moreover, our approach allows predicting the all-India rainfall, as well as the rainfall different homogeneous Indian regions, which is crucial for agriculture in India. We reveal that global warming affects the climate network by enhancing cross-equatorial teleconnections between the southwest Atlantic, the western part of the Indian Ocean, and the North Asia–Pacific region, with significant impacts on the precipitation in India. A stronger connection through the chain of the main atmospheric circulations patterns benefits the prediction of the amount of rainfall. We uncover a hotspot area in the midlatitude South Atlantic, which is the basis for our predictor, the southwest Atlantic subtropical index (SWAS index). Based on the results of geochemical and glaciological investigations in snow pits and shallow cores, regional stack series of air temperature in central Antarctica (in the southern part of Vostok Subglacial Lake) were obtained, covering the last 350 years. It is shown that this parameter varied quasi-periodically with a wavelength of 30-50 years. The correlation of the newly obtained record with the circulation indices of the Southern Hemisphere (SH) shows that the central Antarctic climate is mainly governed by the type of circulation in the SH: under conditions of zonal circulation, negative anomalies of temperature and precipitation rate are observed, whereas the sign of the anomalies is positive during meridional circulation. In the 1970s the sign of the relationship between many climatic parameters changed, which is likely related to the rearrangement of the climatic system of the SH. The data suggest that during the past 350 years such events have taken place at least five times. The stable water isotope content of the central Antarctic snow is governed by the summer temperature rather than the mean annual temperature, which is interpreted as the influence of 'post-depositional' effects. To better understand the dynamics and impacts of blocking events, their 3D structure needs to be further investigated. We present a comprehensive composite analysis of the 3D structure of blocks and its response to future climate change over the North Pacific, the North Atlantic, and Russia in summers and winters using reanalysis and two large-ensemble datasets from CESM1 and GFDL-CM3. In reanalysis, over both ocean and land, the anomalous winds are equivalent-barotropic in the troposphere and stratosphere, and temperature anomalies are positive throughout the troposphere and negative in the lower stratosphere. The main seasonal and regional differences are that blocks are larger and/or stronger in winters; over oceans, the temperature anomaly is shifted westward due to latent heating. Analyzing the temperature tendency equation shows that in all three sectors, adiabatic warming due to subsidence is the main driver of the positive temperature anomaly; however, depending on season and region, meridional thermal advection and latent heating might have leading-order contributions too. Both GCMs are found to reproduce the climatological 3D structure remarkably well, but sometimes disagree on future changes. Overall, the future summertime response is weakening of all fields (except for specific humidity), although the impact on near-surface temperature is not necessarily weakened; for example, the blocking-driven near-surface warming over Russia intensifies. The wintertime response is strengthening of all fields, except for temperature in some cases. Responses of geopotential height and temperature are shifted westward in winters, most likely due to latent heating. Abstract: We have used EML Surface Air Sampling Program (SASP) data to analyze the long-term trend in 7Be surface concentration and address possible correlation between this long-term trend and climatic changes, namely changes in precipitation patterns and temperature. In this paper we present 7Be concentration data from 23 sites, spanning over 25 years, all over the world, and extract long-term trend parameter using two independent techniques. The 7Be concentrations in most stations show a pronounced decreasing trend, potentially corresponding to statistically significant changes in transporting 7Be from upper atmosphere source to these sites. Weak negative correlation between 7Be concentration and amount of precipitation was also observed. However, more data from more representative sites around the world are needed the statistical robustness of this trend. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Influence of North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies on tropical Pacific SST anomalies is examined. Both summer and winter North Atlantic SST anomalies are negatively related to central-eastern tropical Pacific SST anomalies in the subsequent months varying from 5 to 13 months. In particular, when the North Atlantic is colder than normal in the summer, an El Niño event is likely to be initiated in the subsequent spring in the tropical Pacific. Associated with summer cold North Atlantic SST anomalies is an anomalous cyclonic circulation at low-level over the North Atlantic from subsequent October to April. Corresponded to this local response, an SST-induced heating over the North Atlantic produces a teleconnected pattern, similar to the East Atlantic/West Russia teleconnection. The pattern features two anticyclonic circulations near England and Lake Baikal, and two cyclonic circulations over the North Atlantic and near the Caspian Sea. The anticyclonic circulation near Lake Baikal enhances the continent northerlies, and strengthens the East-Asian winter monsoon. These are also associated with an off-equatorial cyclonic circulation in the western Pacific during the subsequent winter and spring, which produces equatorial westerly wind anomalies in the western Pacific. The equatorial westerly wind anomalies in the winter and spring can help initiate a Pacific El Niño event following a cold North Atlantic in the summer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper documents the main features of climate and climate variability across the Monte Desert for the Last Glacial Maximum, the Glacial–Interglacial transition, and the Holocene on the basis of proxy records and for the 20th century using instrumental observations. The climate in the Monte is determined by interactions between regional physiography and atmospheric circulation in the 25–45°S sectors of South America. Although arid and semi-arid conditions prevail across the Monte, its large latitudinal extent and complex topography introduce many particularities at local scales. Paleoclimatic records and model simulations of past climates suggest significant variations in the atmospheric circulation, temperature and rainfall patterns since the Last Glacial Maximum. High-resolution proxy records east of the Andes support the existence of complex climatic patterns with similar temperature changes across the whole region but opposite precipitation variations between subtropical and mid-latitude sectors in the Monte during the past millennium. The present-day climate is depicted in terms of the space and time variability of the near-surface temperature, rainfall and tropospheric wind patterns. Uneven temperature trends over the Monte were recorded for two separate (1920–44 and 1977–2001) global warming periods in the 20th century. Additional warming evidence in the region is provided by extreme temperature records. The non-homogeneous regional pattern of precipitation shows a positive long-term increase between 30 and 40°S during the interval 1985–2001. Ensemble of climate experiments accomplished with general circulation models provide the most likely changes in temperature and rainfall to occur by the end of this century in relation to present climate. Temperature increases, larger in summer than in winter, will be concurrent with more abundant precipitations in summer, but almost no changes or even small reductions in winter across the Monte. Atmospheric circulation exerts an important control on a region's snow avalanche activity by broadly determining the mountain weather patterns that influence snowpack development and avalanche release. In central Spitsbergen, the largest island in the High Arctic Svalbard archipelago, avalanches are a common natural hazard throughout the winter months. Previous work has identified a unique snow climate reflecting the region's climatically dynamic environmental setting but has not specifically addressed the synoptic-scale control of atmospheric circulation on avalanche activity here. In this work, we investigate atmospheric circulation's control on snow avalanching in the Nordenskiöld Land region of central Spitsbergen by first constructing a four-season (2016/2017–2019/2020) regional avalanche activity record using observations available on a database used by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE). We then analyze the synoptic atmospheric conditions on days with differing avalanche activity situations. Our results show atmospheric circulation conducive to elevated precipitation, wind speeds, and air temperatures near Svalbard are associated with increased avalanche activity in Nordenskiöld Land, but different synoptic signals exist for days characterized by dry, mixed, and wet avalanche activity. Differing upwind conditions help further explain differences in the frequency and nature of avalanche activity resulting from these various atmospheric circulation patterns. We further employ a daily atmospheric circulation calendar to help contextualize our results in the growing body of literature related to climate change in this location. This work helps expand our understanding of snow avalanches in Svalbard to a broader spatial scale and provides a basis for future work investigating the impacts of climate change on avalanche activity in Svalbard and other locations where avalanche regimes are impacted by changing climatic and synoptic conditions. When a correlation-based circulation pattern classification was applied to daily 700 hPa heights for 25 summer seasons, and the circulation types were related to surface temperature and precipitation for the Lake Superior basin, within-type variability was found to be high. Regarding temperature, the difference between warm and cold days of a type is a positive height anomaly centred to the east of the lake, which is very similar to the height anomaly for winter temperatures identified in an earlier study. The difference between wet and dry days of a type is a pattern quite unlike that for temperature. It is a dipole pattern consisting of a negative anomaly to the northwest of the lake and a positive anomaly to the east and southeast. These small-scale circulation components were missed by the correlation-based classification because they are much smaller than the differences in height between circulation types. Regression models, relating monthly mean temperature anomalies to circulation type frequencies, produced results comparable to those obtained for winter temperature. For precipitation, the variance explained by the regression models is only half that obtained for temperature. Two approaches were used to reduce within-type variability and to improve the regression results: the division of the first few circulation types into warm/cold and wet/dry subtypes on the basis of differences in 700 hPa vorticity (an approach introduced in the earlier paper), and a modified correlation-based circulation pattern classification. The modification consisted of raising the correlation threshold for a few selected grid-points to capture the small-scale circulation component and also, of lowering the threshold for the comparison between maps and map sectors in order to minimize the number of unclassified days. Of the two approaches used to reduce within-type variability, the modified classification scheme produced superior results. In particular, the variance in precipitation explained by the regression models is about 30% higher than that achieved using vorticity to create subtypes. The wintertime (December–February) 1990–2016 Arctic surface air temperature (SAT) trend is examined using self-organizing maps (SOMs). The high-dimensional SAT dataset is reduced into nine representative SOM patterns, with each pattern exhibiting a decorrelation time scale of about 10 days and having about 85% of its variance coming from intraseasonal time scales. The trend in the frequency of occurrence of each SOM pattern is used to estimate the interdecadal Arctic winter warming trend associated with the SOM patterns. It is found that trends in the SOM patterns explain about one-half of the SAT trend in the Barents and Kara Seas, one-third of the SAT trend around Baffin Bay, and two-thirds of the SAT trend in the Chukchi Sea. A composite calculation of each term in the thermodynamic energy equation for each SOM pattern shows that the SAT anomalies grow primarily through the advection of the climatological temperature by the anomalous wind. This implies that a substantial fraction of Arctic amplification is due to horizontal temperature advection that is driven by changes in the atmospheric circulation. An analysis of the surface energy budget indicates that the skin temperature anomalies as well as the trend, although very similar to that of the SAT, are produced primarily by downward longwave radiation. Estimates of the contribution of direct radiative forcing (DRF) to the surface air temperature trends over the Northern Hemisphere (NH) continents for the period 1979–2012 have been obtained based on an ensemble of numerical experiments with an atmospheric general circulation model using the prescribed historical sea surface temperature and sea ice concentration data with and without time-varying concentrations of greenhouse gases and aerosols in the atmosphere. The contribution of DRF to the simulated ensemble mean temperature variations over land in the NH in winter and summer is approximately 30% or 0.3°С and 0.2°С, respectively. The maximum warming associated with DRF was found, in particular, in winter and summer over the eastern part of the European territory of Russia. The results indicate that the response of atmosphere circulation to DRF may lead to a nonlinear DRF contribution to the temperature changes in the NH, in particular mitigating the temperature increase in the winter season. The effect of atmospheric circulation on monthly, seasonal and annual mean surface air temperature trends in the years 1979–2018 is studied by applying a trajectory-based method on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ERA5 reanalysis data. To the extent that the method captures the effects of atmospheric circulation, the results suggest that circulation trends only had a minor impact on observed annual mean temperature trends in most areas. Exceptions include, for example, a decrease in annual mean warming by about 1 °C in western Siberia, and increased warming in central Europe and the Arctic Ocean. However, the effect of circulation trends on seasonal and particularly monthly temperature trends is more substantial. Subtracting the effect of circulation changes from the ERA5 temperature trends leaves residual trends with a smoother annual cycle than the original trends. The residual monthly mean temperature trends also tend to agree better with the multi-model mean temperature trends from models in the 5th Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) than the original ERA5 trends do, with a 42% decrease in the mean square difference over the global land area.
