This essay explores how Paul negotiates and constructs social identity for the Christos-followers in Corinth from a post-supersessionist perspective by using the Social Identity Theory. Focusing on a close reading of two controversial passages taken from 1 Corinthians (1 Cor 7:17–24 and 9:19–23), this essay argues that there is continuation of existing social identities of both the Jewish and gentile Christos-followers. In the Christos-movement, Jews were not expected to give up their place of belonging in order to become Christos-followers. Likewise, gentiles were not expected to leave behind their previous identity and embrace Jewish practices in order to become the people of God who worship the God of Israel. While the existing social identities continue, Paul also creatively transforms them. Reflection on the implication of this reading for contemporary ethnic Chinese Christos-followers in Muslim-majority Malaysia is also offered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A prerequisite for applying short tandem repeat (STR) kits is obtaining population allele and/or haplotype frequencies and forensic parameters. Firstly, we aimed to investigate the population data of 19 X-chromosomal STRs (X-STRs) included in the AGCU X19 STR kit in the Han people residing in Hubei Province, Central China, and the Zhuang people residing in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of South China. Furthermore, we compared these population data with those for other Chinese populations. In total, 509 unrelated Han males and 266 unrelated Zhuang males were genotyped using the AGCU X19 STR kit. Allele frequencies, haplotype frequencies, and forensic parameters were computed, and genetic differences among 15 Chinese populations were analysed. The 19 X-STRs showed a high power of discrimination and high mean chance of exclusion, whether calculated using allele or haplotype frequencies. Major differences were found between Han and Oroqen, Uyghur, Mongolian, Tibetan, Li, and Yi populations. Aberrant biallelic patterns at DXS10159, DXS10134, and DXS10079 and allelic dropouts at DXS10164 were observed. The 19 X-STRs were highly polymorphic in the Hubei Han and Guangxi Zhuang populations, and the AGCU X19 STR kit was shown to be suitable for forensic casework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By assembling more than fifty hours of interviews with eleven former Uyghur students and teachers, alongside an array of published and unpublished textual documents, this article offers the most complete history of the Uyghur student movements of the 1980s—in the face of considerable neglect and confusion. It argues, first, that the university functioned as a social, intellectual, and political space that allowed Uyghurs to develop their ethno-national identity, build shared grievances, and mobilize politically. Second, it argues that the December 1985 Uyghur student movement was a foundational turning point in the erosion of Hu Yaobang's accommodationist ethnicity policies of the early 1980s, changing how the Party-state diagnosed the reasons for Xinjiang's instability and delimited Uyghur political participation in the People's Republic of China. This article further unsettles later attempts by Chinese scholars to retroactively characterize the student movement as essentially separatist and the work of behind-the-scenes plotters. As Han Christians continue to engage in Christian mission, understanding their interaction with Uyghur Muslims gives insights into growing barriers and future possibilities. Oral histories and relevant historical sources qualitatively explain the challenges and opportunities involved in Han Christian interaction with Uyghurs Muslims. The article assesses the historical and current backgrounds of both groups. Comparing self-reported identities and interactions reveal not just their distinctives but also opportunities for connection. Finally, this article discusses these specific opportunities, despite escalating tensions, for continued Han Christian engagement in Christian mission with Uyghurs, especially as it relates to sharing translated scripture. This article examines the biopower of non-Han bodies by considering the intersections of anthropology, racial science, and colonial regimes. During the 1930s and 1940s, when extensive anthropometric research was being undertaken on non-Han populations in the south-western borderlands of China, several anthropologists studied non-Han groups under the aegis of frontier administration. Chinese scholars sought to generate the physical characteristics of ethnic minority groups in the south-west of China through the methodology of body measurement, in order to identify forms of social and political intervention in the management of the non-Han population in wartime. This article examines the global transmission of Western social science in China, highlighting the local reception of Western racial taxonomy. Non-Han bodies were represented as a subcategory of the Mongolian/'Yellow' race through anthropometric research. The body measurements of non-Han people were used to demonstrate physical similarities between the Han and various ethnic minority groups in order to evoke a unified Zhonghua minzu (Chinese ethnicity) that embraced both the Han Chinese and frontier ethnic minority groups. Xuanzang, who traveled to India by crossing East Turkestan, Central Asia and Afghanistan between 629-645, is known as a great traveler, translator and scholar. Xuanzang's life story and his visit to India were later written as a separate work by his students around 650. At the beginning of the XI century Shinku Sheli Tutung translated this work, which was written in Chinese, into Old Turkic/Uyghur in East Turkestan. In the 'Xuanzang Biography' written in the Old Uyghur script, there is some information about Old Turkish place names, peoples and history. One of them is the ethnonym Kyrgyz. In the part of the work where the skills of the Chinese emperor Taizong are praised, this ethnonym is mentioned in two places. In the first text, it is explained that Taizong fully researched Tibet, understood and knew the Kyrgyz completely, and that they were subject to China because he brought the right laws there. In the second text, it is described that the peoples of the north, including the Kyrgyz, came under Chinese rule. According to the general meaning of these texts, the Kyrgyz are a Turkish tribe that resides in the North of the Great Wall of China, which should be understood for China, that is, who they are to be known, and conquering them brings great prestige to China. This paper considers the ways in which the painter Pang Xunqin "translated" the bodies of non-Han people, by examining his visual representation of the Miao people of Guizhou during the 1940s. His work needs to be understood within the context of the history of anthropology in Republican China. Since he worked closely with Chinese anthropologists his work was largely informed by an anthropological understanding of human diversity and of ethnographic collecting and museum practice, a matter hardly explored among current studies on Pang Xunqin. Pang's representation of the Miao was influenced in equal measure by customary Chinese ethnographic illustration and Western anthropological photography. This paper highlights the many sources that can be found in Pang's works and reveals how he depicted the peripheral frontier. The biopolitics of the body, employed as a system of ethnic classification by Chinese anthropologists, affected Pang's visualization of Miao bodies. In order to build a politicized and unifying Zhonghua minzu, Chinese anthropologists, demonstrated bodily similarities between Han Chinese and ethnic minorities in the southwest of China under categories of "Mongoloid" or "Yellow" racial types. Pang thus depicted Miao bodies by emphasizing their bodily similarities with the majority Han Chinese and adopting the physical features of "Mongoloid/Yellow." Scholarship on the origins of modern territoriality and the modernist conception of territory has largely been confined to Europe and its colonial histories. Few attempts have been made to understand modern territoriality from an alternative epistemic starting point. This article moves beyond critiques of Eurocentrism by examining the territorial metamorphosis of the Qing Empire to modern China. Like the United States and Russia, China has retained its early modern continental colonial possessions. In order to explain the territorialisation of the multi-ethnic Qing empire, this article engages empirically with cartographic and textual representations of China from Confucian literati scholars, European Jesuit cartographers and the Manchu imperial court from the 17th to the early 19th centuries. The empirical study shows that by the early 19th century, a new territorialised conception of 'China' closely resembling that of modern territoriality had emerged. This 'modern' and Sinocentric form of territoriality encompassed areas that were hitherto seen as foreign and non-Chinese. In opposition to the extant Eurocentric historiography, this article traces the emergence of modern territoriality in imperial China to a nexus of European cartographic techniques, Qing imperial conquests and the literati synthesis of Manchu imperial and Sinocentric forms of territoriality. The aim of this study is to show the matrix of Chinese territorial coloniality on the territory today called Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR). State "development" programs in the territory will be analyzed, as well as their effects on the management forms of the indigenous populations, with special interest in the strategies of colonial appropriation and despoil of the natural and human environment of the Uyghur people. This has been the scenario for controlled migration processes and military settlement colonies by the State, with the aim of establishing control and appropriation over its natural, geographical and human resources. In the first chapter, Mark Caprio looks at the American occupation of what became the Republic of Korea, with special reference to the Korean diasporic community and the American decision to make use of first Japanese bureaucrats and then Koreans who had collaborated with the Japanese colonial regime. The book's second section addresses the fall and rise of elements of the Japanese military and a key post-war Japanese politician. This included non-Han Chinese within China who collaborated with the Japanese as well as ethnic Chinese emigres residing in northern Vietnam, where Chinese forces accepted the Japanese surrender. The People's Republic of China has been actively promoting its governance styles abroad. In Central Asia, these programs have increased rapidly both in terms of their frequency and scope. This paper documents 59 in-China training programs for Central Asian officials from 2007 to 2020, the majority of which concerned security management and involved Chinese technology and equipment transfers. It is evident that Central Asian governments are adopting surveillance practices that are based on Chinese security ideology. In recent years, domestic tourism into the Xinjiang region of China has grown rapidly. Government officials view tourism as a source of both economic capital and social stability, presenting a normalcy that makes it attractive for investment. There are two paradoxes to Xinjiang tourism. According to most literature, a massive military presence should deter tourists, but numbers have continued to grow in the militarized Xinjiang region. Second, the cultural "otherness" of Xinjiang is a big draw to the region, yet this culture is being suppressed by state policies to contain Islam. Using a dataset of Han Chinese travel diaries, I look at how narrated tourist experiences of Xinjiang justify policing, how ethnic boundaries are reinforced by practices in both transportation and personal interaction, and how state policies influence Chinese travellers' views on the authenticity of their experience. While bodily assurances of security substantiate political legitimacy, tourists resist the bureaucratic management of sites, allowing for critiques focused almost exclusively on aesthetic taste. Research on Uyghur communities in China often focuses on the power and oppression of the Chinese state, neglecting the power situated in the domestic sphere and women's bodies. My research addresses how younger Uyghur women (aged 18–35 years old) feel suffocated by the expectations of their ethnocultural identity, and how those women both conform to and reject social norms. The themes of marriage and clothing illustrate how representations and discourses of the female body reinforce the boundaries of the Uyghur community. The pleasure and pain of Uyghur identity manifests in women's bodies during territorial insecurity of fading nationalist space. Multiple scales of identity in the body and household disrupt the imaginary cohesiveness and boundedness of territory. While the Chinese state polices Uyghur bodies, so too does Uyghur society police the bodies of other Uyghurs – especially women – as a security strategy of bordering the nation. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's close relationship with the People's Republic of China (PRC) has led scholars and policymakers alike to suggest that Beijing's backing will keep him in power.1 While Hun Sen himself seems to believe this to be true, his reliance on China is actually enflaming Cambodian discontent to such an extent that his planned patrimonial succession is at risk. Given the fragility of regimes mid-succession, Hun Sen's Chinese shelter is augmenting the potential of his clan's fall. Yet as Hun Sen faces increased domestic opposition, he will only further deepen ties with China in hopes of remaining in power, thereby creating a vicious cycle from which escaping will prove difficult. Eastern Turkestan is an area that has witnessed a lot of occupations and rebellions from large to small scale throughout history. In 1911, the Qing Dynasty was overthrown as a consequence of domestic struggles in China, and Eastern Turkestan was impacted by this situation. After thisevent, the people in Eastern Turkestan were governed by a governor-general, and exposed to arbitrary changes since it was not controlled by a central authority. The Kumul rebellion, which started in 1931 during the period of Chin She-jen, began as a consequence of these changes by the governor-general who had seized power. Although the initial trigger of the rebellion was provoked by a Muslim girl's seduction from a Chinese official, the rebellion over time, turned into a power struggle between a lot of groups that wanted to establish dominion over the region. These power struggles were not limited to the Kumul Region but spread to the Uighurs who were living in the southern regions, and resulted in the establishment of an Islamic state in Eastern Turkestan although it was called by an another name. For this reason, the Kumul Rebellion is an important example in terms of the balance of power which emerged in the region and from seeing what the mistakes in administrative practices could cause. This article is aimed to examine the effect of Uyghur's (minority group) positive and negative extended contact with Han (majority group) within the background of China. One affective (intergroup anxiety) and two cognitive (perceived in‐group and out‐group norms) variables were tested as potential mediators. A sample of 875 Uyghur minority college students ranging in age from 17 to 25 years completed self‐reported measures of direct contact, positive and negative extended contact, intergroup anxiety, perceptions of in‐group and out‐group norms, out‐group attitudes, and contact intentions. Results revealed that both positive and negative extended contact were associated with out‐group attitudes and contact intentions, over and above the effect of direct contact. The effects of both forms of extended contact were mediated by intergroup anxiety, perceived in‐group, and out‐group norms. Notably, positive extended contact exerted larger effects than negative extended contact. This research highlights the significance of considering both positive and negative extended contact and the potential of extended contact as a means to ameliorate intergroup relations from the perspective of minority groups. Currently, the Han and Uygur ethnicities in Xinjiang, China are generally in a peaceful state; however, there are also disagreements and conflicts. Through three studies, this article explores intergroup attributional bias (in‐group favoring and out‐group derogating pattern of attribution) between the Hans and Uygurs in Xinjiang, China, and the reducing effect of positive imagined intergroup contact on intergroup attributional bias. Using high school students from Han and Uygur as participants, Study 1 investigated participants' attributional patterns for in‐group and out‐group members presenting desirable or undesirable behaviors in daily situations. The results revealed that both Hans and Uygurs demonstrate an in‐group favoring pattern of attribution, but not an out‐group derogating pattern. Study 2 added a brief positive imagined intergroup contact (experimental group) or a brief positive imagination of an outdoor scene (control group) before participants completed the same questionnaire as in Study 1 and found a weaker intergroup attributional bias in the experimental group. In Study 3, Han students who had a positive imagined contact with a Uygur demonstrated a closer distance and reported more positive attitudes toward Uygurs than Han students who had imagined contact with a nonspecific stranger. Studies 2 and 3 together indicated a reducing effect of imagined contact on intergroup attributional bias through improvement of intergroup attitudes. The conclusion of this research is particularly meaningful for the Hans and Uygurs, as it implies that properly implemented positive imagined intergroup contacts might be a useful remedy for reducing potential conflicts. Objective: To examine the relationship between cross-ethnic friendship and cross-ethnic face per- ceptual memory in the regions where the population ratios of the Uygurs and the Hans are different Methods: According to demographic criteria, 33 Han college students with lower contact with Uygurs from the area where Uygur and Han population ratio was 1 ： 9, 32 Uygur college students with lower contact with Hans from the area where Uygur and Han population ratio was 9: 1，and 32 Uygur with higher contact with Hans and 34 Han students with higher contact with Uygurs from the area where Uygur and Han population ratio was 4:6 were recruited in the stud- у. Relying on E-prime program, the " learning-recognition" paradigm was adopted to compare the difference between the participants"recognition for faces of one's own race and others. Meanwhile, based on self-reported Friendship Quality Questionnaires, participants"Time Spent and Intimacy with out-group friends were assessed as the measure-ment of inter-group friendship. Results: The accurate rate, false alarm rate and discrimination accuracy demonstrated a significant own-race advantage for the Uygurs with lower contact and higher contact with the Hans <0. 01), whereas the Hans with higher contact and lower contact with the Uygurs did not show significant difference between own-race faces and other-race faces on these variables (Ps >0. 05). Stepwise regression analysis showed that the regression coefficients of the interracial intimacy and time spent with out-group friends toward the magnitude of crossrace effect were stably significant (/3 = -0. 87, -0. 56, Ps <0. 01). Conclusion: The Uygur and Han students may prefer different encoding strategies in face recognition, and inter-group friendship experience may be an appropriate variable for predicting the ability to recognize other-race faces with good reliability and validity. We hypothesized that the brain structural differences as discovered previously between Westerners and East Asians could also be revealed between Han Chinese and Uyghur, which were genetically related ethnic groups with distinct languages. We conducted a brain MRI structural comparison in terms of cortical thickness and surface area between 15 healthy young Uyghurs and 15 age-matched Han Chinese. Widespread regions with significantly greater cortical thickness were found in the Uyghurs, and their distribution showed strong resemblance to previous “Westerners vs. Asians” findings. While surface area analysis displayed less widespread brain differences. Notably, our detected regions with structural differences contained a large part of language-specific or at least closely language-related brain areas, which may partly be attributable to the brain plasticity respectively driven by Uyghur and Mandarin. Our findings will help to better understand the neurobiological basis of interethnic differences along with the language processing mechanisms of Han Chinese and Uyghur. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have shown that human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DP/DQ gene polymorphisms are associated with susceptibility to chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. We clarified the roles of the HLA-DP/DQ gene in HBV infection in different nationalities. Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in HLA-DP (rs9277471, rs9277535 and rs9277542) and the SNP rs9272346 in HLA-DQ were studied. In total, 779 patients were recruited to this study, including 400 Chinese Han and 399 Uygurs. The rs9277535 variant genotypes were directly associated with HBV persistence compared to healthy controls in an additive model of the Chinese Han population (odds ratio [OR] = 1.88, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.03–3.41, P = 0.040), and in a recessive model of the Chinese female population (OR = 2.02, 95% CI = 1.26–3.24, P = 0.003). In addition, rs9277471 and rs9277542 variant genotypes significantly decreased the risk of HBV infection compared to healthy controls in an additive model of the Chinese Han population (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.29–0.98, P = 0.042; OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.29–0.97, P = 0.039) and in a dominant model of the Chinese female population (OR = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.31–0.80, P = 0.004; OR = 0.49, 95% CI = 0.31–0.79, P = 0.003). The GG genotype of rs9277346 was associated with HBV infection in the Chinese Han population (additive model: OR = 0.38, 95%CI = 017–0.82, P = 0.014; recessive model: OR = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.19–0.86, P = 0.019) and in males (additive model: OR = 0.31, 95% CI = 0.14–0.65, P = 0.002; dominant model: OR = 0.65, 95% CI = 0.43–0.97, P = 0.034; recessive model: OR = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.18–0.73, P = 0.005). In addition, allele G of rs9277346 was marginally related to a reduction in risk for HBV infection in the Uygur population. An association between polymorphisms in the sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP) and the natural course of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in the Chinese Han population has been noted. However, it is not known whether these polymorphisms are associated with the risk of developing chronic HBV infection in other racial or ethnic populations. Accordingly, we conducted a candidate single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) association study in Tibetan and Uygur HBV-infected patients. A total of 1302 subjects including 871 Tibetans and 431 Uygurs were recruited. According to their serological and clinical characteristics, each ethnic group was divided into two groups comprising spontaneous clearance individuals and persistently infected patients. Three SNPs were genotyped by a high resolution melting curve methodology. Among the SNPs, rs2296651 exhibited a minor allele frequency of < 0.01. The frequency of allele A at rs4646287 was much higher in Tibetans (9.4% for Tibetans and 4.6% for Uygurs, p < 0.001) than in Uygurs, but the frequency of allele A at rs7154439 was the opposite (15.7% for Tibetans and 20.5% for Uygurs, p = 0.002). Irrespective of race, no significant differences in the frequency distributions of the three SNP alleles or genotypes were observed between the case and clearance groups. Moreover, none of the NTCP haplotypes were statistically different between the two groups. Data from the Tibetan patients could be grouped by HBeAg status, viral load and HBV genotype; however, no significant differences were found in the SNP genotype distribution for each characteristic. In conclusion, the NTCP polymorphisms we identified tended to be ethnicity-dependent. For Tibetans and Uygurs, no association of the three SNPs (rs7154439, rs4646287 and rs2296651) and their haplotypes with HBV chronicity was observed. Examination of SNPs in NTCP for their specific associations with the course of HBV infection in other ethnic minority groups is now required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

1. CYP1A2is a highly polymorphic gene and CYP1A2 enzyme results in broad inter-individual variability in response to certain pharmacotherapies, while little is known about the genetic variation ofCYP1A2in Uyghur Chinese population. The aim of the present study was to screen Uyghur volunteers forCYP1A2genetic polymorphisms. 2. We used DNA sequencing to investigate promoter, exons, introns, and 3’ UTR of theCYP1A2gene in 96 unrelated healthy Uyghur individuals. We also used SIFT (Sorting Intolerant From Tolerant) and PolyPhen-2 (Polymorphism Phenotyping v2) to predict the protein function of the novel non-synonymous mutation inCYP1A2coding regions. 3. We identified 20 differentCYP1A2polymorphisms in the Uyghur Chinese population, including two novel variants (119A > G and 2410G > A). Variant 119A > G was predicted to be probably damaging on protein function by PolyPhen-2, by contrast, 2410G > A was identified as benign. The allele frequencies ofCYP1A2*1A, *1B, *1F, *1G, *1J, *1M, *4,and*9were 23.4%, 53.1%, 3.7%, 2.6%, 2.6%, 13.5%, 0.5%, and 0.5%, respectively. The frequency of*1F, a putative high inducibility allele, was higher in our sample population compared with that in the Caucasian population (p < 0.05). The most common genotype combinations were*1A/*1B(46.9%) and*1B/*1M(27.1%). 4. Our results provide basic information onCYP1A2polymorphisms in Uyghur individuals and suggest that the enzymatic activities of CYP1A2 may differ among the diverse ethnic populations of the world. PPARδ belongs to a receptor family of ligand-activated transcription factors involved in the regulation of inflammation, cellular glucose uptake, protection against atherosclerosis and endothelial cell function. Through these effects, they might be involved with the ischemic stroke (IS). We recruited 200 subjects (100 IS patients diagnosed by CTs or/and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 100 normal healthy controls from Chinese Uyghur population) to assess the nature of the functional polymorphisms of PPARδ + 294T/C and any links with IS in this unique population. We found that the C allele of the PPARδ + 294T/C polymorphism was more common in controls than IS subjects in the Uyghur population. C allele carriage may be associated with an increased risk of IS in Uyghurs with a strong trend (OR 1.79, 95% CI: 1.11–2.89). Additionally, the PPARδ CC and TC genotypes were less frequent in Uyghur population than in Han population. Our population and ethnic-based study demonstrates that the PPARδ + 294C allele maybe an independent risk of IS in Chinese Uyghurs especially in the male (OR 1.99, 95%CI:1.06–3.72) and obesity populations (OR 2.36, 95%CI: 1.19–4.67), which were consistent with Tunisian Population. Moreover, total cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, waist-to-hip ratio, hypertension, history of heart diseases, and negative events may increase the risk of IS, with a trend for HDL to be a protective factor for IS in the Uyghur population. This study investigated the development of cultural variability in interdependent self-construal by comparing the differences in the tripartite self-concept of adolescent samples from the Han and Uyghur cultures. Participants (460 males, 522 females; M age = 16.3yr., SD=4.8) in the sub-phases of pre-, early-, mid-, late- and post-adolescence were asked to completed the revised Twenty Statements Test, and the items generated by the participants were coded into private, relational, and collective self-statements. The private self-statements were further differentiated by personal and social orientation, and the relational self-statements were further coded into family and friend focus. The relational aspect of an individual's self, or personal relationship, became increasingly important with age in the Han cultural groups, whereas the collective aspect of an individual's self, or social identity, became increasingly important with age in the Uyghur cultural groups. These findings seem to show the development of differences between relational and collective interdependent self-construals. Using survey data (N = 1,600) collected in Urumchi in Xinjiang, China, this paper examines the Han-Uyghur gap in schooling and offers a nuanced account of educational stratification by ethnicity in urban China. Data analysis shows that Han Chinese are more likely than Uyghurs to receive schooling, and the ethnic variation persists when holding main background characteristics constant. However, the differences in schooling between Han and Uyghur men fade away when background characteristics are controlled for, whereas no similar patterns are found among women. Gender roles account for both ethnic parity in schooling between Han and Uyghur men and ethnic inequality in schooling between Han and Uyghur women, which underlies the overall Han-Uyghur gap in educational attainment in Ürümchi. Objective: To explore the relationship between the endothelial lipase ( EL) gene promoter −384A/C polymorphism and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and lipid status in elderly Uygur patients in Xinjiang. Methods: The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method was used to detect the EL gene promoter −384A/C genotype in 341 cases of elderly patients with ACS and 380 healthy subjects. Results: In an elderly Chinese Han population, the EL-384A/C genotype and allele frequency distribution were significantly different between the ACS group and the control group ( p<0.05); the frequency of the CC genotype in the ACS group was significantly higher than that in the control group ( p<0.05). After adjusting for gender, age, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, hyperlipidemia, and other cardiovascular risk factors, the difference remains statistically significant ( p<0.05). In the ACS group, C allele carriers had significantly higher serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations compared to AA genotypes (all p<0.05). Background: The cytochrome P450, family 1, subfamily A, polypeptide 1 (CYP1A1) gene is expressed in the vascular endothelium, which metabolizes arachidonic acid into 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE) and epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs). 20-HETE mediates cardiovascular homeostasis and growth response in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) as well as the anti-platelet effect. EETs are potent endogenous vasodilators and inhibitors of vascular inflammation. This study assessed the association between human CYP1A1 gene polymorphisms and coronary artery disease (CAD) in the Uygur and Han in China. Methods: Two independent case-control studies that recruited Han (389 patients with CAD and 411 controls) and Uygur participants (293 patients with CAD and 408 controls) analyzed the relationship between CYP1A1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs: rs4886605, rs12441817, rs4646422 and rs1048943) and CAD. All patients with CAD and controls were genotyped for the four SNPs of CYP1A1 using TaqMan SNP genotyping assays. Results: In the Uygur group, the distribution of the dominant model(CC vs CT + TT) of rs4886605 for the total sample and the males was significantly different between CAD patients and control participants (P = 0.001 and P = 0.012, respectively), The difference remained significant after a multivariate adjustment (P = 0.018, P = 0.015, respectively). The rs12441817 was also associated with CAD in a dominant model for all participants (P = 0.003) and men (P = 0.012), and the difference remained significant after a multivariate adjustment (P = 0.016, P = 0.002, respectively). However, we did not observe differences in the Uygur females and Han group with regard to the allele frequency or genotypic distribution of rs4886605 and rs12441817 between patients with CAD and control participants. Patients with CAD did not significantly differ from the control participants with regard to the distributions of rs4646422 and rs1048943 genotypes, the dominant model, the recessive model, or allele frequency in the Han and Uygur groups. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression levels of estrogen receptor (ER) α and β and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (Her-2), as well as the distribution of breast cancer molecular subtypes in Uygur and Han breast cancer patients. Cancer tissues were collected and analyzed from 709 breast cancer patients enrolled between January 2000 and December 2010. The expression levels of ERα, ERβ and Her-2 were determined by immunohistochemistry. The differences in expression and molecular subtype distribution between Uygur and Han patients with breast cancer were analyzed using a Pearson's χ² test. Statistically significant differences were observed in the expression levels of ERβ, ERα and Her-2 between the Uygur and Han patients with breast cancer (P<0.05). The expression levels of ERβ (++), Eβ (+++) and Her-2 (+++) in Uygur patients were significantly higher, while the expression levels of ERα (+++) in Uygur patients were significantly lower when compared with Han patients. The percentage of luminal A type breast cancer in Uygur patients was significantly lower when compared with the Han patients, whereas the percentages of basal-like and Her-2 overexpression types were significantly higher than those in Han patients (P<0.05). Trust is a vital lubricant that increases the sense of security in social interactions. In this study, we investigated the intergroup trust between the Uyghur and the Han, the two largest ethnic groups in Xinjiang, China, with a Go/No-Go Association Task. Specifically, we instructed Uyghur and Han participants to respond to ethnic faces (Uyghur vs. Han) and trust/distrust words and measured the strength of the automatic associations between the faces and words for both in-group and out-group pairs. As expected, both ethnic groups showed implicit in-group trust and out-group distrust, but the Han group demonstrated stronger in-group trust and out-group distrust toward the Uyghur than the Uyghur group toward the Han. However, the magnitude of distrust of the Han toward the Uyghur was small to medium as compared with that reported by other intergroup relationship research. In addition, participant geographic location was associated with out-group distrust. Differences in emotional expressivity, emotion regulation, and mood among ethnic minorities college students in China were examined. Three questionnaires were administered to 370 college students representing Hui (15%), Uighur (14%), Mongolian (14%), Tibetan (17%) ethnic groups, and Han (40%). Tibetan students were found to have higher levels of negative emotional expressivity in comparison to Han, Uighur, Hui, and Mongolian students. Han students reported a higher level of emotion regulation than students from ethnic groups. Minority students, especially those of Tibetan ethnicity, reported a significantly higher level of negative mood than Han students. Together, these findings suggest that minority students experience more negative emotion and are less likely to adopt emotion regulation strategies than Han students. Have workers of minority status suffered labour market discrimination in China? Do all actors in the state sector discriminate against minority workers? What are the rationales for discrimination? To address these questions, I compare two ethnic groups (Han Chinese and Uyghur) with regard to job attainment in the state sector. Data are from a 2005 survey (N= 2,947) conducted in Ürümchi, China. Data analysis shows that controlling background characteristics does not remove the Uyghur-Han difference in job attainment in state firms. However, there is no ethnic variation in employment in redistributive agencies. This contrast is explained with reference to post-1978 market transition and the resulting differentiation in the institutional tasks between state firms and government agencies.
