A new type of carbonized polymer dot was prepared by the one-step hydrothermal method of triethoxylsilane (TEOS) and citric acid (CA). The sensor made from carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) showed superior gas sensing performance toward ammonia at room temperature. The Si, O-codoped CPDs exhibited superior ammonia sensing performance at room temperature, including a low practical limit of detection (pLOD) of 1 ppm ( R a / R g : 1.10, 1 ppm), short response/recovery time (30/36 s, 1 ppm), high humidity resistance (less than 5% undulation when changing relative humidity to 80 from 30%), high stability (less than 5% initial response undulation after 120 days), reliable repeatability, and high selectivity against other interferential gases. The gas sensing mechanism was investigated through control experiments and in situ FTIR, indicating that Si, O-codoping essentially improves the electron transfer capability of CPDs and synergistically dominates the superior ammonia sensing properties of the CPDs. This work presents a facile strategy for constructing novel high-performance, single-component carbonized polymer dots for gas sensing.

The unique molecular structure of cellulose makes it challenging to dissolve at room temperature (R.T.), and the dissolution mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we employed ZnCl 2 aqueous solution for cellulose dissolution at R.T., proposing a novel four-stage dissolution mechanism. The efficient dissolution of cellulose in ZnCl 2 aqueous solution at R.T. involves four indispensable stages: rapid migration of hydrated Zn 2+ ions towards cellulose, sufficient penetration between cellulose sheets, strong interaction with cellulose hydroxyl groups, and effective dispersion of separated cellulose chains. The proposed four-stage dissolution mechanism was validated through theoretical calculations and experimental evidence. The hydrated Zn 2+ ions in ZnCl 2  + 3.5H 2 O solvent exhibited ideal migration, penetration, interaction, and dispersion abilities, resulting in efficient cellulose dissolution at R.T. Moreover, only slight degradation of cellulose occurred in ZnCl 2  + 3.5H 2 O at R.T. Consequently, the regenerated cellulose materials obtained from ZnCl 2  + 3.5H 2 O (R.T.) exhibited better mechanical properties. Notably, the solvent recovery rate reached about 95 % based on previous usage during five cycles. The solvent is outstanding for its green, low-cost, efficiency, simplicity, R.T. conditions and recyclability. Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) is a green thermochromic material in energy-saving buildings, anti-counterfeiting, and data security fields. However, the high lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of HPC, around 42 °C (higher than the human thermal comfort temperature), limits its thermochromic sensitivity, poor stability, and short lifespan. Herein, we developed a durable, high-performance cellulose-based thermochromic composite with a lower LCST and easy preparation capability by combining HPC with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). In such thermochromic cellulose, CMC constructs a hydrophilic skeleton to enable uniform dispersion of HPC, and functions as a stronger competitor to attract the water molecules compared to HPC, both of which trigger high thermochromic sensitivity and low LCST (just 32.5 °C) of our CMC/HPC. In addition, CMC/HPC shows superior stability, such as 100-day working capability and 60-time recyclability. A lignin-based PU coating was prepared for paper-based green packaging. Two representative diisocyanate were used to prepare the coatings. Due to the rigid aromatic, the physical properties of the TDI system reached the maximum below the lignin content of 40%. The HDI that contains flexible aliphatic chains alleviated the brittleness of coating, and it showed physical advantages when the lignin content was more than 50%. Owing to the high lignin content, the coating presented enhanced thermal stability. After coated with the lignin-based PU coatings, the dry tensile strength of coated paper was improved by 126%. Amazingly, the wet strength was increased from 0.31 to 12.6 MPa with an improvement nearly 40 times. Based on the coordination of lignin, Ag + was introduced into the PU matrix, which imparted the coating with excellent antibacterial ability. The colony forming units of E. coli and S. aureus were both less than 1. However, no inhibition halo was observed, which indicated that the Ag was firmly anchored on the coating and the antibacterial ability is only available when the bacterial contact the coating surface. In this study, a versatile cellulose conductive hydrogels with outstanding mechanical properties, rapid self-healing performance, and excellent thermal sensitivity were successfully fabricated. The tensile strength and toughness of the gels gradually increased to 249 kPa and 1.57 MJ/m 3 , respectively, and the healing efficiency of the hydrogels quickly reached 96.3% within 60 min. Importantly, the hydrogels exhibited a broad strain window (0-2066%) with a gauge factor ranging from 0.22 to 6.7, which could monitor of both obvious and subtle motion of the human body with high sensitivity and good repeatability. Moreover, the sensors also possessed good thermal sensitivity in the 0% and 400% state, and the response of the gel sensors increased from 8.3 to 87.9 when the temperature was increased from 35 to 85 °C. Temperature-responsive photonic coatings are appealing for a variety of applications, including smart windows. However, the fabrication of such reflective polymer coatings remains a challenge. In this work, we report the development of a temperature-responsive, infrared-reflective coating consisting of a polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal siloxane, applied by a simple bar coating method. First, a side-chain liquid crystal oligosiloxane containing acrylate, chiral and mesogenic moieties was successfully synthesized via multiple steps, including preparing precursors, hydrosilylation, deprotection, and esterification reactions. Products of all the steps were fully characterized revealing a chain extension during the deprotection step. Subsequently, the photonic coating was fabricated by bar-coating the cholesteric liquid crystal oligomer on glass, using a mediator liquid crystalline molecule. After the UV-curing and removal of the mediator, a transparent IR reflective polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal coating was obtained. Notably, this fully cured, partially crosslinked transparent polymer coating retained temperature responsiveness due to the presence of non-reactive liquid-crystal oligosiloxanes. Upon increasing the temperature from room temperature, the polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal coating showed a continuous blue-shift of the reflection band from 1400 nm to 800 nm, and the shift was fully reversible.

This paper reports on an automated temperature-programmed headspace GC technique for the determination of gelatinization temperature of starch. 1-butanol was used as a tracer and added to the starch-solution for the test. Based on measuring the GC signal of 1-butanol in the headspace with the temperature increasing, two transition points (corresponding to the onset temperature and the ending temperature of starch gelatinization) were observed by plotting the GC signal of 1-butanol vs. the temperature. The results showed that the method has a good measurement precision (the standard deviation < 1 °C) and accuracy (the average relative differences = 3.9%, compared to a standard reference method). Eucalyptus wood was pretreated with an integrated process based on hydrothermal and alkaline pretreatments. The structural changes of hemicelluloses during the pretreatments and the components of the hydrolysates were comprehensively characterized. Sugar and spectral analyses indicated that the hemicelluloses remained in the residues obtained at hydrothermal pretreatment under low temperatures were mainly composed of a (1 → 4)-β-D-Xylp backbone with 4-O-methyl-α-D-glucuronic acids attached at O-2 of the xylose together with various monosaccharides of rhamnose, arabinose, galactose, glucose, and mannose. The pretreatments resulted in serious degradation of hemicelluloses at high pretreatment temperatures. The distribution changes of the hemicelluloses in the cell walls during the integrated pretreatments were detected by Confocal Raman Microscopy, which revealed that the dissolution of hemicelluloses in different morphological regions was inhomogeneous, and the a large portion of hemicelluloses were removed from the secondary cell wall regions during the pretreatments., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. The stabilization effects on a novel commercial β-glucosidase preparation from Aspergillus fumigatus during saccharification of ethanol-water pretreated wheat straw were analysed in comparison to this enzyme stability during cellobiose hydrolysis. For this purpose, the kinetics of β-glucosidase residual activity during cellobiose hydrolysis from 40 till 70 °C were studied, resulting in the fitting of a first-order partial deactivation model. Furthermore, a subsequent fitting of a kinetic model including this first-order deactivation equation and a Michaelis-Menten equation with double competitive inhibition by glucose and uncompetitive inhibition by cellobiose to released glucose was successful. Finally, global enzyme deactivation and prospective deactivation of enzyme remaining in the liquid phase were evaluated during wheat straw hydrolysis at 50 °C as a relevant saccharification process. Results suggest that the presence of a solid substrate dramatically reduces the global deactivation rate of the enzyme and, in addition, there is no loss the stability of the enzyme in the liquid phase along the saccharification process, even for 72 h., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Some zwitterionic surfactants exhibit upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in aqueous solutions. For the zwitterionic surfactant solution mixed with cellulase, when its temperature is below UCST, the cellulase can be recovered by coprecipitation with zwitterionic surfactant. In this work, 3-(Hexadecyldimethylammonio) propanesulfonate (SB3-16) was selected to enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocelluloses and recover the cellulase. After adding 2mmol/L of SB3-16, the enzymatic digestibility of eucalyptus pretreated by dilute acid (Eu-DA) and by sulfite (Eu-SPORL) increased from 27.9% and 35.1% to 72.6% and 89.7%, respectively. The results showed that SB3-16 could reduce the non-productive adsorption of cellulase on hydrophobic interface, while it did not significantly inhibit the activity of cellulase. For the solution contained 1wt% SB3-16 and 200mg protein/L CTec2 cellulase, 55.2% of protein could be recovered by cooling. A thermophilic cellulase, FnCel5a, from Fervidobacterium nodosum was conjugated with various functional polymers including cationic, anionic, and strongly and weakly hydrogen bonding polymers. The activity of FnCel5a toward a high-molecular-weight carboxymethyl cellulose substrate was enhanced by polymer conjugation. Activity enhancements of 50% or greater observed for acrylamide and mixed N,N-dimethyl acrylamide-2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate polymers, suggesting that the greatest enhancements were caused by polymers capable of noncovalent interactions with the substrate. The conjugates were found to have nearly identical thermodynamic stability to the native enzyme, as assessed by free energy (ΔG), enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (TΔS) parameters extracted from differential scanning fluorimetry. Polymers tended to confer comparable tolerance to high concentrations of dimethylformamide, with longer polymers typically enabling higher activity relative to shorter polymers. The new FnCel5a conjugates represent an advance in the production of cellulases that maintain activity at high temperatures or in the presence of denaturing organic solvents.

Urban sludge was treated by Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). The effect of hydrothermal carbonization temperature, mixing with or without catalysts on solid products yield, heavy metal contents, turbidity and COD value was evaluated. The result showed solid products yield decreased from 92.04% to 52.65% when the temperature increased from 180 to 300°C. And the Cu, Zn, and Pb contents under exchangeable states decreased and reached discharge standard. Addition of FeCl 3 or Al(OH) 3 resulted in a significant increase in the exchangeable states of Zn, Pb, Cr, and Cd and decrease in their residual states. The turbidity and COD value of hydrothermal liquid decreased from 450° to 175°, and 13 to 6.8g/L, with increasing hydrothermal temperature. Comparison with HTC, solid productivity from low-temperature pyrolysis is higher. The exchangeable states of Cu, Zn, and Cr exceeded the limiting values. An integrated pretreatment process based on hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP) followed by alkaline pretreatment has been applied to treat Eucalyptus. The chemical composition and structure changes of lignin during the pretreatment were comprehensively characterized. The surface morphology of the cell walls and lignin distribution of the pretreated Eucalyptus were detected by scanning electron and confocal Raman microscopies. It was found that the chemical bonds between lignin and hemicelluloses were cleaved during the pretreatment. The results also indicated that the contents of β-O-4', β-β', and β-5' linkages were decreased with the increase of hydrothermal pretreatment temperature and the cleavage of β-O-4' linkages in lignin was accompanied with repolymerization reactions. 31 P NMR analysis showed that the content of aliphatic OH was reduced as the temperature increased and the total phenolic OH was elevated and then declined with the increase of temperature. Raman spectra analysis revealed that the dissolution rate of lignin in the secondary wall regions was faster than that in cell corner middle lamella regions during the pretreatment. These results will enhance the understanding of the cell wall deconstruction during the pretreatment and the mechanism of the integrated pretreatment process acting on Eucalyptus.

The aim of this paper was to prepare composites of bacterial cellulose (BC) filled with silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles to evaluate the influence of the SiO 2 contents (3, 5 and 7wt%) on the thermo-mechanical properties of the composites. BC hydro-gel was immersed in an aqueous solution of silanol derived from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), the silanol was then converted into SiO 2 in the BC matrix by pressing at 120°C and 2MPa. The BC/SiO 2 translucent sheets were examined by dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The temperature dependence of the storage modulus, loss modulus and tan delta was determined by DMA. In general, the results revealed that the increment of storage modulus and thermal stability increased concomitantly with the augmentation of SiO 2 content. Therefore, it could be concluded that the mechanical properties of the composites were improved by using high amounts of nano silica. This would be a high aspect ratio of BC capable of connecting the BC matrix and SiO 2 , thereby enhancing a large contact surface and resulting in excellent coherence. A decrease of the storage modulus was consistent with increasing temperature, resulting from softening of the composites. The storage modulus of the composites increased in the order: BC/S7>BC/S5>BC/S3, while the loss modulus and tan delta decreased. On the other hand, the thermal stabilities of all BC/SiO 2 composites were remarkably enhanced as compared to the pristine BC. TGA curves showed that the temperature of decomposition of the pure BC gradually shifted from about 260°C to about 370°C as silica content increased. SEM observations illustrated that the nano-scale SiO 2 was embedded between the voids and nano-fibrils of the BC matrix. Owing to unique properties, including the wound healing effect, sericin gel and films have attracted significant attention in the biomedical and cosmetic fields. The structural characteristics and properties of sericin gels and films are especially important owing to their effect on the performance of sericin in biomedical and cosmetic applications. In the present study, the effect of temperature on the gelation behavior, gel disruption, and sol-gel transition of sericin was examined using rheometry. In addition, the effect of the drying temperature on the structural characteristics of the sericin film was determined via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The strength of the sericin gel increased and the gelation process was prolonged with decreasing storage temperatures. FTIR and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results also revealed that the crystallinity and the thermal decomposition temperature of the sericin film increased with decreasing drying temperature. The sericin gels were disrupted at a storage time of 40min when they were stored at temperatures higher than 50°C, and the corresponding gel strength decreased with increasing temperature. This study investigated the thermal decomposition characteristics and pyrolytic products of anaerobic digested rice straw (ADRS) by thermogravimetric (TG) and pyrolysis-gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) analysis. Compared with the raw rice straw (RS), the thermal decomposition temperature of ADRS was shifted to higher temperature zone and the second decomposition zone of cellulose (Toffset(c)-Tpeak) became narrower (14 °C less), which indicated that the composition of rice straw were changed significantly by the anaerobic digestion pretreatment. Py-GC/MS analysis showed that the quality of the bio-oil and the selectivity of pyrolytic products could be obviously improved by anaerobic digestion. The total yields of alcohols, acids, aldehydes, furans, anhydrosugars, and ketones pyrolysis substances decreased, while the yield of phenols increased. The yield of 4-Vinylphenol (4-VP) increased from 29.33%, 8.21% and 5.76% to 34.93%, 12.46% and 7.68% at 330, 450 and 650 °C, respectively, after anaerobic digestion., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The effects of recycling on the microstructure and properties of bleached aspen chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) fibres were systematically investigated. The low-temperature nitrogen adsorption and atomic force microscopy results showed that a substantial amount of large pores and most of the very small pores in the fibre wall closed and the fibre surface became less coarse and porous during recycling. The partial cocrystallisation of cellulose microfibrils took place, as reflected in the increment of the cellulose crystallinity and the width of the crystallite in the 0 0 2 lattice plane. These irreversible structural changes caused significant hornification of the recycled fibres, leading to the loss of swelling and bonding capability. The decrease of the tensile index, burst index, and tear index further demonstrated the deterioration of the fibre properties. In this work, the structural features of the lignin isolated with 2% NaOH at 90°C for 2.5h from the hydrothermally pretreated eucalyptus fibers at different temperatures (100-200°C) for different times (15-60min) were thoroughly investigated. Results showed that the hydrothermal pretreatment facilitated the separation of alkali lignin from the pretreated fibers. It was found that the linkages of β-O-4, β-β, and β-5 decreased gradually with the increase of hydrothermal severity. Furthermore, decreased molecular weights (1630-510g/mol), associated carbohydrates contents (1.99-0.05%) and aliphatic OH contents (3.37-0.65mmol/g), and increased phenolic OH contents (0.71-2.98mmol/g) and thermal stability of the alkali lignins were observed with the increase of the hydrothermal severity., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. This study investigated the autohydrolysis pre-treatment prior to chemi-thermomechanical pulping (CTMP) process including the effects of autohydrolysis pretreatment with a lower severity on characteristics of the autohydrolysis liquor and hydrolyzed chips. The intensity of autohydrolysis, characterized by the severity factor, increased from 1.76 to 3.54, the hydrolyzed chips yield decreased from 99.0% to 86.7% and the xylose extraction yield increased from 0.8% to 44.0%. The content of holocellulose, pentosan and acid soluble lignin remained in the hydrolyzed chips decreased dramatically with increasing the treatment severity. After the autohydrolysis pretreatment, the resultant poplar chemi-thermomechanical pulp with a severity factor of 2.37 could obtain a 15.3 Nm/g tensile index, 58.6% ISO brightness and a 2.39 cm(3)/g bulk., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. In this study, an environmental-friendly hydrothermal pretreatment of Eucalyptus fiber followed with alkali post-treatment was developed to produce bioethanol efficiently. This biorefinery process allowed all major components of biomass being converted into high value-added products. The chemical and structural features of the residual hemicelluloses isolated with alkali from the hydrothermal pretreated Eucalyptus fiber, were comparatively investigated. Sugar and spectral analyses indicated that the hemicelluloses were mainly composed of glucuronoxylans, and especially hemicelluloses prepared at higher temperature (180°C) contained higher contents of glucomannans and α-glucan. Hydrothermal pretreatment resulted in a significant hydrolysis of the glycosidic linkages in xylan backbone, and thus the molecular weight of the hemicelluloses was significantly reduced from 56,520 to 7780g/mol with the increase of temperature. Bamboo was non-isothermally pretreated with hot water at 140-200°C for different times (10-120 min). The effects of pretreatment conditions on the degradation of carbohydrates, cellulose crystallinity, partial removal/relocation of lignin, morphologic change of the feedstock, and glucose yield during the enzymatic hydrolysis were investigated. The effective removal of amorphous cellulose and hemicelluloses led to the increase of crystalline index of the residues. In comparison with the raw material, the surface of the pretreated samples was irregular and numerous lignin droplets appeared on the cellulose bundle surface under the intense pretreatment conditions. The glucose conversion increased with the raise of pretreatment temperature and the prolongation of time, and the maximum conversion of 75.7% was achieved for the sample pretreated at 200°C for 120 min, whereas the untreated sample was only 15.7%. The xylan-rich hemicellulose components of sugarcane bagasse were sequentially extracted with pressurized hot-water extraction (PHWE) and alkaline peroxide. The hemicelluloses were found to contain mainly arabinoxylans with varying substitutions confirmed by different chemical and spectroscopic methods. The arabinoxylans obtained from PHWE were found to be more branched compared to those obtained after alkaline extraction. Sequential extraction could be useful for the isolation of hemicelluloses with different degree of branching, molar mass, and functional groups from sugarcane bagasse, which can be of high potential use for various industrial applications., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The effects of Na as organic bound form or as inorganic salts form on the pyrolysis products characteristics of alkali lignin were investigated by using thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR), tube furnace and thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA). Results of TG-FTIR and tube furnace indicated that the two chemical forms Na reduced the releasing peak temperature of CO and phenols leading to the peak temperature of the maximum mass loss rate shifted to low temperature zone. Furthermore, organic bound Na obviously improved the elimination of alkyl substituent leading to the yields of phenol and guaiacol increased, while inorganic Na increased the elimination of phenolic hydroxyl groups promoting the formation of ethers. It was also found the two chemical forms Na had different effects on the gasification reactivity of chars. The thermal stability of two enzymes adsorbed on paper, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP), was measured using a colorimetric technique quantifying the intensity of the product complex. The enzymes adsorbed on paper retained their functionality and selectivity. Adsorption on paper increased the enzyme thermal stability by 2-3 orders of magnitude compared to the same enzyme in solution. ALP and HRP enzymatic papers had half-lives of 533 h and 239 h at 23 degrees C, respectively. The thermal degradation of adsorbed enzyme was found to follow two sequential first-order reactions, indication of a reaction system. A complex pattern of enzyme was printed on paper using a thermal inkjet printer. Paper and inkjet printing are ideal material and process to manufacture low-cost-high volume bioactive surfaces.
