Abstract

Sound localization in mammals and birds uses coincidence-detector neurons in the auditory brainstem to map interaural time differences. A new study uses a simple computational model to simulate the known geometry and electrophysiology of the cells to show that dendrites are able to improve their coincidence detection properties.

5. A call for cultural competency in Jerusalem's medical services.

Abstract

The author comments on the need for cultural competency in medical services in Jerusalem, Israel. He relates the experience of his mother in a hospital after undergoing a hip replacement surgery. He stresses that research proved that about half of the Arabic-speaking patients in Jerusalem hospitals do not understand the instructions given to them. He believes that cultural competency medical services in Jerusalem will help reduce inequality that exists in that sector.
