1. Interplay between the electrical transport properties of GeMn thin films and Ge substrates

Abstract

We present evidence that electrical transport studies of epitaxial p-type GeMn thin films fabricated on high resistivity Ge substrates are severely influenced by parallel conduction through the substrate, related to the large intrinsic conductivity of Ge due to its small bandgap. Anomalous Hall measurements and large magneto resistance effects are completely understood by taking a dominating substrate contribution as well as the measurement geometry into account. It is shown that substrate conduction persists also for well conducting, degenerate, p-type thin films, giving rise to an effective two-layer conduction scheme. Using n-type Ge substrates, parallel conduction through the substrate can be reduced for the p-type epi-layers, as a consequence of the emerging pn-interface junction. GeMn thin films fabricated on these substrates exhibit a negligible magneto resistance effect. Abstract

We present a comprehensive study relating the nanostructure of Ge_0.95Mn_0.05 films to their magnetic properties. The formation of ferromagnetic nanometer sized inclusions in a defect free Ge matrix fabricated by low temperature molecular beam epitaxy is observed down to substrate temperatures T_S as low as 70 deg. Celsius. A combined transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) analysis of the films identifies the inclusions as precipitates of the ferromagnetic compound Mn_5Ge_3. The volume and amount of these precipitates decreases with decreasing T_S. Magnetometry of the films containing precipitates reveals distinct temperature ranges: Between the characteristic ferromagnetic transition temperature of Mn_5Ge_3 at approximately room temperature and a lower, T_S dependent blocking temperature T_B the magnetic properties are dominated by superparamagnetism of the Mn_5Ge_3 precipitates. Below T_B, the magnetic signature of ferromagnetic precipitates with blocked magnetic moments is observed. Abstract

We present the first study relating structural parameters of precipitate free Ge0.95Mn0.05 films to magnetisation data. Nanometer sized clusters - areas with increased Mn content on substitutional lattice sites compared to the host matrix - are detected in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The films show no overall spontaneous magnetisation at all down to 2K. The TEM and magnetisation results are interpreted in terms of an assembly of superparamagnetic moments developing in the dense distribution of clusters. Each cluster individually turns ferromagnetic below an ordering temperature which depends on its volume and Mn content., Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Lett. (2006). Abstract

RESEARCH QUESTION: Is measurement of hyperglycosylated HCG (hHCG) superior to beta-HCG (HCG+ß) for early pregnancy detection after IVF and embryo transfer? DESIGN: Blood samples were collected on day 4 (+1), 7 (+1) and 11 (+2) after embryo transfer from women aged 18-45 years undergoing first or second fresh or frozen IVF embryo transfer cycles. Biochemical pregnancy was assessed on-site by HCG determination on day 11; clinical pregnancy was assessed by ultrasound on day 21 (+4/-3). Serum hHCG (immunochemiluminometric assay) and HCG+ß (Elecsys® HCG+ß assay) concentrations were measured. Performance of hHCG and HCG+ß for predicting pregnancy was evaluated and cut-offs selected. RESULTS: In total, 155 women were enrolled and underwent IVF and embryo transfer. Area under the curve (AUC) (95% CI) on day 4 was not significantly different for hHCG (AUC 0.88; 95% CI 0.83 to 0.94) and HCG+ß (AUC 0.90; 95% CI 0.84 to 0.95), as was predictive performance on day 7 and 11, with higher AUC estimates compared with day 4. Applying cut-offs derived according to Youden's index on day 4 (hHCG, 100 pg/ml; HCG+ß, 1.30 mIU/ml), both biomarkers demonstrated high negative predictive values for ruling out pregnancy (hHCG, 83.8%; HCG+ß, 82.8%) and high positive predictive values for ruling in pregnancy (hHCG, 89.0%; HCG+ß, 84.9%) on day 21. Diagnostic performance improved from day 4 to day 11. CONCLUSIONS: Predictive performance for early pregnancy post-IVF embryo transfer of day-5 blastocysts was not significantly different for hHCG and HCG+ß; hHCG superiority over HCG+ß was not shown.

Abstract

Numerical modelling is an important method in the improvement of the understanding of a variety of geological processes such as the reactivation of faults and seismicity, orogeny or volcanism. Furthermore, it can be crucial for geotechnical activities such as geothermal use of the underground, oil and gas production or the use of dams. Geomechanical models enable stress predictions even in areas without stress data and can therefore greatly contribute to the long-term safety and productivity of underground activities.As computational power is limited the geology of geomechanical models often needs to be simplified, especially for larger scale models. This is true not only for the resolution of the implemented stratigraphy but also for the implementation of faults as they severely increase the amount of required elements and influence the model stability. Furthermore, the implementation of faults often leads to artifacts and can therefore reduce the accuracy of the model results. Due to these limitations it is frequently necessary to distinguish between faults that are crucial for the model as they influence the stresses in magnitude and orientation on a large scale and faults that will only influence the model on a local scale and may therefore be neglected on a regional perspective. The impact of faults on a geomechanical model depends on various different factors such as geometry and mechanical properties of the fault itself, the tectonic regime or the scale of the model. As the relevance of a fault for a geomechanical model is not necessarily identical to its relevance in other geoscientific fields it can be challenging to identify relevant faults.The SpannEnD project focuses on the generation of a 3-D geomechanical model of Germany and adjacent areas in the context of the disposal of nuclear waste in order to predict the tectonic stresses in areas without stress data. There is a multitude of faults known in the modelling area but due to their sheer amount not all faults can be incorporated. Criteria have to be found that drastically reduce the number of faults while keeping the change in the geomechanical stress pattern to a minimum. We will present different criteria that can be used for the fault selection which have being worked out in the framework of the SpannEnD project.

Abstract

Background: Despite the introduction of direct-acting antiviral agents for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, peginterferon alfa/ribavirin remains relevant in many resource-constrained settings. The non-randomized GUARD-C cohort investigated baseline predictors of safety-related dose reductions or discontinuations (sr-RD) and their impact on sustained virologic response (SVR) in patients receiving peginterferon alfa/ribavirin in routine practice. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the current state of knowledge and implementation of two new directives. After the release of new directives it will take some time before everyone is aware of them and implementation is achieved. Implementation of the Nationwide standard of continuous care of anticoagulation and the Directive for regulated introduction of new oral anticoagulants was investigated in the hospital setting six months after release. DESIGN AND METHODS Structured questionnaires were used to interview hospital pharmacists and specialists involved in prescribing anticoagulant drugs. RESULTS: In total, 27 hospital pharmacists and 48 specialists participated. In general the standard and directive are better known by hospital pharmacists than by specialists. The implementation of parts of the standard, especially some indicators, are lagging behind and need extra attention. CONCLUSION: Many hospitals have started the implementation of standard and directive but it will take more time to fully implement them.

Abstract

The gold standard for quantification of pain is a person's self-report. However, we need objective parameters for pain measurement when intensive care patients, for example, are not able to report pain themselves. An increase in pain is currently thought to coincide with an increase in stress hormones. This observational study investigated whether procedure-related pain is associated with an increase of plasma cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline. In 59 patients receiving intensive care after cardiac surgery, cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline plasma levels were measured immediately before and immediately after patients were turned for washing, either combined with the removal of chest tubes or not. Numeric rating scale scores were obtained before, during, and after the procedure. Unacceptably severe pain (numeric rating scale ≥ 4) was reported by seven (12%), 26 (44%), and nine (15%) patients, before, during and after the procedure, respectively. There was no statistically significant association between numeric rating scale scores and change in cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline plasma levels during the procedure. Despite current convictions that pain coincides with an increase in stress hormones, procedural pain was not associated with a significant increase in plasma stress hormone levels in patients who had undergone cardiac surgery. Thus, plasma levels of cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline seem unsuitable for further research on the measurement of procedural pain.

Abstract

Magnetic properties of Ge1-xMnx epitaxial layers with a Mn content of a few percents are substantially influenced by inhomogeneities in the distribution of Mn atoms in the Ge lattice. Depending on the substrate temperature during molecular-beam epitaxial fabrication, apparently cubic, coherent Mn-rich clusters or incoherent precipitates consisting of the hexagonal, intermetallic Mn5Ge3 phase can occur in a defect free, diamond lattice Ge matrix. In this work, we apply synchrotron x-ray diffraction in grazing-incidence geometry to probe the diffuse scattered intensity of the distorted Ge host lattice. Based on a theoretical description of the scattered intensity we derive quantitative information on the lattice mismatch between the Mn inclusions and the Ge lattice, as well as on the average size of the inclusions and the average Mn content within the inclusions.

Abstract

We present a comprehensive study relating the nanostructure of Ge0.95Mn0.05 films to their magnetic properties. The formation of ferromagnetic nanometer-sized inclusions in a defect-free Ge matrix fabricated by low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy is observed down to substrate temperatures T-S as low as 70 degrees C. A combined transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy analysis of the films identifies the inclusions as precipitates of the ferromagnetic compound Mn5Ge3. The volume and amount of these precipitates decrease with decreasing T-S. Magnetometry of the films containing precipitates reveals distinct temperature ranges: Between the characteristic ferromagnetic transition temperature of Mn5Ge3 at approximately room temperature and a lower, T-S-dependent blocking temperature T-B the magnetic properties are dominated by superparamagnetism of the Mn5Ge3 precipitates. Below T-B, the magnetic signature of ferromagnetic precipitates with blocked magnetic moments is observed. At the lowest temperatures, the films show features characteristic of a metastable state.

Abstract

Controlled nanoscale self-assembly of magnetic entities in semiconductors opens novel perspectives for the tailoring of magnetic semiconductor films and nanostructures with room temperature functionality. We report that a strongly directional self-assembly in growth direction in Mn-alloyed Ge is due to a stacking of individual Ge1-x Mnx clusters. The clusters represent the relevant entitles for the magnetization of the material. They are formed of a core-shell structure displaying a Mn concentration gradient. While the magnetic moments seem to be carried by the shells of the clusters, their core is magnetically inactive. © 2009 American Chemical Society.

Abstract

As pain in the intensive care unit (ICU) is still common despite important progress in pain management, we studied the efficacy of an intravenous bolus of morphine 2.5 vs 7.5 mg for procedural pain relief in patients after cardiothoracic surgery in the ICU. In a prospective double-blind randomised study, 117 ICU patients after cardiothoracic surgery were included. All patients were treated according a pain titration protocol for pain at rest, consisting of continuous morphine infusions and paracetamol, applied during the entire ICU stay. On the first postoperative day, patients were randomised to intravenous morphine 2.5 (n=59) or 7.5 mg (n=58) 30 minutes before a painful intervention (turning of patient and/or chest drain removal). Pain scores using the numeric rating scale (Numeric Rating Scale, range 0 to 10) were rated at rest (baseline) and around the painful procedure. At rest (baseline), overall incidence of unacceptable pain (Numeric Rating Scale ≥4) was low (Numeric Rating Scale >4; 14 vs 17%, P=0.81) for patients allocated to morphine 2.5 and 7.5 mg respectively. For procedure-related pain, there was no difference in incidence of unacceptable pain (28 vs 22%, P=0.53) mean pain scores (2.6 [95% confidence interval 2.0 to 3.2] vs 2.7 [95% confidence interval 2.0 to 3.4]) between patients receiving morphine 2.5 and 7.5 mg respectively. In intensive care patients after cardiothoracic surgery with low pain levels for pain at rest, there was no difference in efficacy between intravenous morphine 2.5 mg or morphine 7.5 mg for pain relief during a painful intervention. Abstract

This study was performed to evaluate any differences in reading speed and duration of comfortable reading speed in geriatric patients with post disciform stage exudative age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) or ocular histoplasmosis. Reading speed and duration with CCTV, illuminated stand magnifier, and spectacle lenses were compared for 37 patients in the Low Vision Program at the Central Blind Rehabilitation Center. Results indicate significantly faster reading speed with CCTV and spectacle lenses as compared to illuminated stand magnifiers. The difference between reading speeds measured with spectacle reading glasses and CCTVs was borderline significant. Patients read significantly longer with CCTVs than with spectacle lenses or illuminated stand magnifiers. No significant difference was found comparing spectacle lenses or illuminated stand magnifiers with regard to reading duration.

Abstract

Cs–Au/TiO2rutile catalysts have been prepared and tested for the direct synthesis of n-propanol from CO2in the presence of C2H4and H2. Irrespective of the Cs loading, two kinds of Au particles, i.e.Au nanoparticles (NPs) around 4 nm to 8 nm and below 2 nm (even atomic gold), were identified on the surface of the catalysts. No direct relationship between the size and propanol production was established, while Cs loading strongly affected these catalyst properties. HAADF-STEM and EDX proved that Cs was homogenously distributed on both TiO2and Au NPs and favoured stabilisation of the Auδ+species. Such species were suggested to increase the rate of CO insertion into C2H4thus improving the selectivity to propanol. In addition to Cs loading, the temperature and the H2/CO2, H2/C2H4and CO2/C2H4ratios also affected both desired (propanol formation) and undesired (C2H4hydrogenation to C2H6) reaction pathways. The conversion of CO2increased with an increase in the temperature from 473 K to 543 K, while the conversion of C2H4was practically not affected but the selectivity to propanol decreased from 100% to around 30%. For all temperatures, the catalyst performance depended on the H2/(CO2+ C2H4) ratio. Based on the obtained results, optimal reaction conditions for propanol synthesis were identified.

Abstract

This report focuses on the development of evoked potential (EP) methods for measuring and quantifying non-freezing cold injury (NFCI) in the rat tail. A neural volley can be elicited by electrical stimulation of the tail and recorded at various points along pathways to the brain. Through signal averaging, EPs can be derived and monitored in order to quantify the effects of cold on neural function. In the present study, the recording techniques and parameters are discussed relative to initial studies in which injuries were induced through prolonged exposure of the tail to cold water. Cold exposure produced profound changes in EP amplitudes and latencies recorded on the tail, lower back, and over the somatosensory cortex of the brain. Collectively, results indicate that the EP methodology is sensitive to neural dysfunction resulting from cold and will therefore be useful in future studies of NFCI.

Abstract

This report describes the effects observed in cognitive performance during a study concerned with the consequences of pyridostigmine pretreatment on performance of divers during extended heat and warm water exposures. Ten U.S. Navy divers performed during two 7-hour heat and warm water tests. Each test consisted of a 4-hour predive exposure to 37.8 C air at the surface , followed by a 3-hour dive in 34.4 C water at a depth of 1.6 ATA breathing either air or 100% oxygen. Cognitive tests that measure short-term memory (Matching-to-Sample) and learning capability (Repeated Acquisition) were administered 30 min before entering the heat, after 2 and 4 h in the predive component, and immediately following the dive phase. Vision and coordination tests were conducted during the first and third hours of the predive phase and in rest periods during the dive component.
