The melody of the well-known Christmas song Joululaulu op. 20b n:o 5 “Arkihuolesi kaikki heitä” (1916) by Leevi Madetoja has rarely been questioned, even though there are two later autographic variants, one from Suvivesper (1924) and the other from the composer’s own arrangement of the song for mixed choir (1944). The editor of Leevi Madetoja’s Solo Songs and Duets (Fennica Gehrman, 2013), Kimmo Tammivaara, made the controversial decision to alter the melody in bar 14 of Joululaulu to make it correspond with the later versions. Which one of the variants is “right”? Is it even possible to find a definite answer to this question? From the music philological point of view the answer is clear. Looking at the later variants, there is no reason to doubt the original melody. The question of why Madetoja’s arrangement for mixed choir differs from the original is more complex, and the answer might lie in the composer’s alcoholism and life circumstances in the 1940s. The question of the composer’s ability to work during his final years raises philosophical and ethical issues, with necessary implications for the new critical editions of his works. The purpose of this article is to reflect on production, organization and tradition of autograph collections since the beginning until the end of the nineteenth century. In particulary, these collections, considered by the classical archival science only such one of the principle causes of destruction of the archives and as the result of the collectors’ craze that pervaded Europe in that turn of years, were used as a kind of archives, where historians could find all sorts of records, performing a para-archivistical function in absence of the availability of public archives, also influencing the methods of the archival arrangement.

The authors' papers, as long as they remain available to private collectors, are like karst rivers that disappear and reappear. This article concerns two already known drafts of 'L'infinito', one in verse, the other in prose, nowadays other in prose, today unanimously considered to be fakes. Dr Fabio Massimo Bertolo, director of Finarte, has informed me that the auction house has in custody the original paper of those sketches and has put at my disposal the reproduction, that with his permission I publish here at the end of the article. The essay provides an original interpretation of the origin and the meaning of a curious paper in endecasyllables kept among the manuscripts of Giacomo Leopardi at the National Library of Naples, which modern publishers usually call Esercizi di memoria. Leopardi used to write preparatory verses, in particular for his Zibaldone, probably when he did not have the opportunity to devote himself to the drafting of the diary as in Recanati. This activity probably took place in the periods when Leopardi was in travel: the notes probably served to fix ideas and thoughts to be developed, and the verse form provided the author with an occupation during his travels in carriage. The hypothesis therefore proposed is that Leopardi could have written at least part of the recto of this paper during his travel in Rome in 1822-23, when the writing of the Zibaldone was practically interrupted, in order to fix ideas to be developed on his return. Finally, the essay aims to reconstruct the plots that connect books, facts and people in the "labyrinth of associations" built by Leopardi at the time of writing., Il saggio indaga l'origine e il significato di una curiosa schedina in endecasillabi presente tra le carte leopardiane conservate alla Biblioteca Nazionale di Napoli, che gli editori moderni usano chiamare Esercizi di memoria e di cui si fornisce qui un'originale interpretazione. Leopardi era infatti solito redigere schedine in versi preparatorie, in particolare allo Zibaldone, e si può credere che esse venissero redatte quando l'autore non aveva agio o modo di dedicarsi alla stesura del diario con la stessa assiduità che gli era concessa a Recanati. Simili operazioni potrebbero in particolare collocarsi in quei periodi in cui Leopardi soggiornava fuori casa ed era soggetto a spostamenti: gli appunti servivano probabilmente a fissare gli estremi di pensieri da sviluppare, e la forma in versi forniva all'autore un’occupazione durante i viaggi in carrozza. Viene dunque proposta l'ipotesi che Leopardi abbia potuto scrivere almeno una parte del recto del primo foglietto durante il suo soggiorno a Roma del 1822-23, quando la stesura dello Zibaldone era praticamente interrotta, per fissare delle idee da sviluppare al suo ritorno. Il saggio mira infine a ricostruire le trame che collegano libri, fatti e persone nel "labirinto di associazioni" costruito da Leopardi al momento della scrittura.

Presentation of the Mosconi-Negri Archive of Sandrà of Castelnuovo del Garda, recently opened to scholars and containing a rich epistolary section (more than 6,000 pieces between 1722 and 1869) and manuscripts autographs of various authors of 18th-19th Century (Giacomo Leopardi, Cesare Betteloni, Giacomo Mosconi, Ippolito Pindemonte, Vincenzo Monti, Jean-Baptiste de Montgrand, Clara Maffei, Aleardo Aleardi, Melchiorre Missirini, Opprandino Arrivabene, Caterina Bon Brenzoni, Luigi Carrer, Angelo Messedaglia, Pompeo Molmenti, Bennassù Montanari, Alberto Nota, Giovanni Scopoli, Antonio Fortunato Stella, Alessandro Torri and others).

The contribution offers the text of seven letters of Vincenzo Monti on the basis of their autographs. The letters are all sent to Giovanni Antonio Maggi, a faithful, refined and industrious intellectual of Milan, who joined the elderly poet in almost all the latest literary labors. The three later letters were already known to scholars for some time, but are offered here in a more correct version, faithfull to the originals. Il presente contributo dà conto di una serie di autografi delle Satire di Salvator Rosa, conservati presso la Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana (S.P.63) e mai presi in considerazione dagli studiosi, e offre i primi risultati dell’indagine avviata in particolare sulle carte autografe di La Musica, La Poesia, La Pittura. Il primo tentativo di stabilire il testo critico delle sette satire di Salvator Rosa, composte tra il 1641 e il 1663 (a stampa nel 1694 circa), risale al 1892, per le cure di Giovanni Alfredo Cesareo, e tuttora si fa ricorso a questa edizione; ma, per ammissione dello stesso editore, la recensio dei testimoni manoscritti è incompleta. Una nuova sistemazione testuale non potrà dunque non tenere conto anche degli autografi conservati presso la Biblioteca Ambrosiana., This paper focuses on the autographs of Salvator Rosa’s Satires, conserved in the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana (S.P.63) and never examined; in particular, it offers the first results of the investigation on the autographs of satires La Musica, La Poesia, La Pittura. The first attempt to establish the critical text of the seven satires, composed between 1641 and 1663 (and printed in about 1694), dates back to 1892, for the care of Giovanni Alfredo Cesareo; but, by his own admission, the recensio of manuscripts is incomplete. His edition is still being used. The new textual arrangement will take into account also the autographs conserved in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana. &nbsp

Lo studio recupera dall'Archivio di Gian Pietro Lucini, conservato presso la Biblioteca Comunale di Como, cinque sonetti che l'autore non ha mai pubblicato. Tutte le opere hanno un interesse per motivi diversi: uno mostra il debito verso l'opera di Gabriele d'Annunzio, contro cui l'autore successivamente si scagliò con tono fortemente polemico; uno è accompagnato da un commento autoriale che ne evidenzia la volontà di riscriverlo in versi liberi; e tre rappresentano appunto una prima fase di elaborazione di testi in verso libero che sono stati successivamente pubblicati dall'autore, e nelle quali la critica ha riconosciuto un debito dell'autore verso la forma chiusa. Non era però mai stata palesata la loro origine da un intero testo scritto secondo un preciso schema metrico e rimico. Il saggio fornisce l'edizione critico-genetica e commentata dei cinque sonetti e li confronta, per i tre casi indicati, con la forma testuale nella quale furono licenziati dall'autore per la stampa.

Il saggio tratta del cod. Parigino Italiano 482 della Bibliothèque Nationale de France, un testimone notissimo ma per certi versi ancora indecifrabile, contenente una copia del Decameron confezionata dal fiorentino Giovanni d’Agnolo Capponi allo scrittoio di Giovanni Boccaccio. Punto di partenza è una sintetica descrizione del codice; poi si esaminano brevemente le sue caratteristiche materiali e testuali, ripercorrendo le tappe fondamentali dell’animato dibattito critico che lo ha riguardato negli ultimi anni; infine si riportano i risultati di una recente expertise che ha permesso di aggiungere ulteriori elementi di giudizio ai complessi problemi della sua origine, confezione, datazione e localizzazione, presentando alcune possibili, nuove piste di ricerca. The essay presents a study on cod. Par. Ital. 482 of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, a notable but still indecipherable witness, containing a copy of Decameron made by the Florentine copyist Giovanni d’Agnolo Capponi, at the desk of Giovanni Boccaccio. The starting point is a brief description of the code; then the paper examines its material and textual features, recalling the fundamental stages of the lively critical debate that has been about him in recent years; finally, it introduces the results of a recent expertise have been shown to add additional evidence to the complex problems of its origin, dating and localization, presenting some possible new search paths.
