Cap-shaped skeletal fossils are the earliest undisputed body fossils of mollusks appearing in the basal Cambrian. A study on the morphometry of cap-shaped fossils from the Nanjiang area (North Sichuan, China) is undertaken to understand the origin and evolution of the early mollusks. The distribution of these fossil cap-shaped mollusks indicates a stepwise increase in their diversity during the early Cambrian. Maikhanella Zhegallo in Voronin et al., 1982 co-occuring with the spinose sclerites of siphogonuchitids, is regarded as the earliest scleritized mollusk. It is followed by other maikhanellids, e.g., Purella Missarzhevsky, 1974 and Yunnanopleura Yu, 1987, which co-occur with the earliest univalved helcionellids, e.g., Igorella Missarzhevsky in Rozanov et al., 1969. Cluster analysis of their morphometric characteristics shows that the Maikhanella group is similar to the Purella and Yunnanopleura groups, but is less comparable with univalved helcionellids. The maikhanellids are interpreted as representatives of the stem group Aculifera, although it remains uncertain if one or two larger cap-shaped shell plates were present on the elongate slug-like body, comparable to those of Halkieria Poulsen, 1967 or Orthrozanclus Conway Morris and Caron, 2007. Maikhanellids are characterized by the prominent protrusions or scales on the cap-shaped shell plates arranged in a concentric pattern around the shell apex. Evolutionarily, the protrusions or scales are reduced in younger strata, whereas subsequently a typically concentric ornament developed, the cap-shaped shell plates developed higher profiles, and the apical region became increasingly bare of scales. Meanwhile, the cap-shaped shell plates gradually evolved into a helcionellid-like appearance with an anteroposteriorly inclined apex. The morphological evolution of the earliest sclerotized mollusks reflects biotic evolution and environmental adaption among the stem-group mollusks during the early Cambrian.

The Yangmaba Formation of latest Early Devonian age in the Longmenshan area of Sichuan Province, China, is a shelfal facies that consists of four types of carbonate-siliciclastic deposits: clay-rich, siliciclastic sand-rich, carbonate-dominated, and hybrid mixed. Storm deposits vary in their thickness, composition, and abundance-per-meter within these mixed carbonate-siliciclastic deposits. Meter-scale statistics of the relative storm frequency (events-per-meter) and magnitude (bed thickness) were compiled in two coeval sections through each of the hybrid facies in the lower Yangmaba Formation, which spans approximately the entire conodont Polygnathus patulus Zone of the uppermost Emsian Stage. Low-pass filtering, spectral analysis, and Acycle software interpretation of these tempestite statistics yield 3.5 main oscillations in each section, with an average wavelength of ~23 m. These long-wavelength trends are semi-coincident with interpreted long-term variations in sea level, where shallower depths allowed a greater influence by storms. Superimposed on the long-wavelength cycles are medium-wavelength cycles of 5.5–6.3 m. The estimated ~1.5 m.y. time-span of this conodont zone of the lower Yangmaba Formation and the approximate 1:4 ratios of these wavelengths indicate that frequency and intensity of major storms and the recording of tempestites in the sedimentary record were modulated by ~100- and 95-k.y.-short-eccentricity orbital-climate oscillations superimposed on a main 405-k.y.-long-eccentricity cycle. These eccentricity climate cycles governed storm intensity and regional sea level on this margin of the tropical Yangtze Platform of South China.

Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). Background: Sleep disturbance is common following hospital admission both for COVID-19 and other causes. The clinical associations of this for recovery after hospital admission are poorly understood despite sleep disturbance contributing to morbidity in other scenarios. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and nature of sleep disturbance after discharge following hospital admission for COVID-19 and to assess whether this was associated with dyspnoea. Methods: CircCOVID was a prospective multicentre cohort substudy designed to investigate the effects of circadian disruption and sleep disturbance on recovery after COVID-19 in a cohort of participants aged 18 years or older, admitted to hospital for COVID-19 in the UK, and discharged between March, 2020, and October, 2021. Participants were recruited from the Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 study (PHOSP-COVID). Follow-up data were collected at two timepoints: an early time point 2–7 months after hospital discharge and a later time point 10–14 months after hospital discharge. Sleep quality was assessed subjectively using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire and a numerical rating scale. Sleep quality was also assessed with an accelerometer worn on the wrist (actigraphy) for 14 days. Participants were also clinically phenotyped, including assessment of symptoms (ie, anxiety [Generalised Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale questionnaire], muscle function [SARC-F questionnaire], dyspnoea [Dyspnoea-12 questionnaire] and measurement of lung function), at the early timepoint after discharge. Actigraphy results were also compared to a matched UK Biobank cohort (non-hospitalised individuals and recently hospitalised individuals). Multivariable linear regression was used to define associations of sleep disturbance with the primary outcome of breathlessness and the other clinical symptoms. PHOSP-COVID is registered on the ISRCTN Registry (ISRCTN10980107). Findings: 2320 of 2468 participants in the PHOSP-COVID study attended an early timepoint research visit a median of 5 months (IQR 4–6) following discharge from 83 hospitals in the UK. Data for sleep quality were assessed by subjective measures (the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire and the numerical rating scale) for 638 participants at the early time point. Sleep quality was also assessed using device-based measures (actigraphy) a median of 7 months (IQR 5–8 months) after discharge from hospital for 729 participants. After discharge from hospital, the majority (396 [62%] of 638) of participants who had been admitted to hospital for COVID-19 reported poor sleep quality in response to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire. A comparable proportion (338 [53%] of 638) of participants felt their sleep quality had deteriorated following discharge after COVID-19 admission, as assessed by the numerical rating scale. Device-based measurements were compared to an age-matched, sex-matched, BMI-matched, and time from discharge-matched UK Biobank cohort who had recently been admitted to hospital. Compared to the recently hospitalised matched UK Biobank cohort, participants in our study slept on average 65 min (95% CI 59 to 71) longer, had a lower sleep regularity index (–19%; 95% CI –20 to –16), and a lower sleep efficiency (3·83 percentage points; 95% CI 3·40 to 4·26). Similar results were obtained when comparisons were made with the non-hospitalised UK Biobank cohort. Overall sleep quality (unadjusted effect estimate 3·94; 95% CI 2·78 to 5·10), deterioration in sleep quality following hospital admission (3·00; 1·82 to 4·28), and sleep regularity (4·38; 2·10 to 6·65) were associated with higher dyspnoea scores. Poor sleep quality, deterioration in sleep quality, and sleep regularity were also associated with impaired lung function, as assessed by forced vital capacity. Depending on the sleep metric, anxiety mediated 18–39% of the effect of sleep disturbance on dyspnoea, while muscle weakness mediated 27–41% of this effect. Interpretation: Sleep disturbance following hospital admission for COVID-19 is associated with dyspnoea, anxiety, and muscle weakness. Due to the association with multiple symptoms, targeting sleep disturbance might be beneficial in treating the post-COVID-19 condition. Antarctic bottom water (AABW) production is a key factor governing global ocean circulation, and the present disintegration of the Antarctic Ice Sheet slows it. However, its long-term variability has not been well documented. On the basis of high-resolution chemical scanning of a well-dated marine ferromanganese nodule from the eastern Pacific, we derive a record of abyssal ventilation spanning the past 4.7 million years and evaluate its linkage to AABW formation over this period. We find that abyssal ventilation was relatively weak in the early Pliocene and persistently intensified from 3.4 million years ago onward. Seven episodes of markedly reduced ocean ventilation indicative of AABW formation collapse are identified since the late Pliocene, which were accompanied by key stages of Northern Hemisphere glaciation. We suggest that the interpolar climate synchronization within these inferred seven collapse events may have intensified global glaciation by inducing poleward moisture transport in the Northern Hemisphere.

The lower Toarcian black shale and mudstone succession of the Anya section in the northeastern Ordos Basin records a climatically controlled evolution of the lacustrine system during the negative carbon isotope excursion (NCIE) of the Toarcian oceanic anoxic event (T-OAE ; ca. 183 Ma). In the Anya section, petrography integrated with climate proxies (Sr/Cu and Rb/Sr) and weathering indices (weathering index of Parker, chemical index of weathering and plagioclase index of alteration), suggests that a warm-humid climate with sporadic semihumid-semiarid intervals developed during the early Toarcian and was coincident with strong chemical weathering. Sr/Ba and S/TOC ratios suggest that the Anya section's rocks were generally deposited in freshwater. Four phases (phases A, B, C and D) in lake evolution are distinguished from the variation in petrographical and geochemical proxies providing clues about the drivers of environmental change and organic matter accumulation in the lacustrine basin. Phases A and C have a high preservation of organic matter derived from lake plankton (Type II-III kerogens), were characterized by anoxia, and coincided with high primary productivity. On the contrary, phases B and D indicate a low primary productivity and suboxic-oxic conditions, with a lower organic matter content of predominantly higher land plant origin (Type III kerogen). The accumulation of organic matter was mainly controlled by changes in primary productivity and redox conditions that were tightly linked to the local sedimentary evolution of the Ordos Basin and to global and regional climate. During the early Toarcian NCIE, the accumulation of organic-poor sediment and terrestrial organic matter may have been driven by enhanced seasonality, superimposing on local lake level changes. As a consequence, the peak of the T-OAE carbon cycle perturbation does not coincide with lacustrine black shale deposition and/or peak anoxia in this continental depositional system. This emphasizes the significance of local or regional environmental change on the carbon sequestration within lacustrine systems.

Background: Most studies of immunity to SARS-CoV-2 focus on circulating antibody, giving limited insights into mucosal defences that prevent viral replication and onward transmission. We studied nasal and plasma antibody responses one year after hospitalisation for COVID-19, including a period when SARS-CoV-2 vaccination was introduced. Methods: In this follow up study, plasma and nasosorption samples were prospectively collected from 446 adults hospitalised for COVID-19 between February 2020 and March 2021 via the ISARIC4C and PHOSP-COVID consortia. IgA and IgG responses to NP and S of ancestral SARS-CoV-2, Delta and Omicron (BA.1) variants were measured by electrochemiluminescence and compared with plasma neutralisation data. Findings: Strong and consistent nasal anti-NP and anti-S IgA responses were demonstrated, which remained elevated for nine months (p < 0.0001). Nasal and plasma anti-S IgG remained elevated for at least 12 months (p < 0.0001) with plasma neutralising titres that were raised against all variants compared to controls (p < 0.0001). Of 323 with complete data, 307 were vaccinated between 6 and 12 months; coinciding with rises in nasal and plasma IgA and IgG anti-S titres for all SARS-CoV-2 variants, although the change in nasal IgA was minimal (1.46-fold change after 10 months, p = 0.011) and the median remained below the positive threshold determined by pre-pandemic controls. Samples 12 months after admission showed no association between nasal IgA and plasma IgG anti-S responses (R = 0.05, p = 0.18), indicating that nasal IgA responses are distinct from those in plasma and minimally boosted by vaccination. Interpretation: The decline in nasal IgA responses 9 months after infection and minimal impact of subsequent vaccination may explain the lack of long-lasting nasal defence against reinfection and the limited effects of vaccination on transmission. The Upper Carboniferous Benxi Formation of the Ordos Basin is the lowest strata overlying Middle Ordovician above the major ca. 150-Myr sedimentary gap that characterizes the entire North China Block (NCB). We apply an integrated analysis of stratigraphy, petrography, and U–Pb dates and Hf isotopes on detrital zircons to investigate its provenance and relationships to the progressive collisions that formed the Xing’an-Mongolia Orogenic Belt to the north and the Qinling Orogenic Belt to the south. The results show that, in addition to regional patterns of siliciclastic influx from these new uplifted sources, the Benxi Formation is composed of two sequences corresponding to long-term glacial-interglacial cycles during the Moscovian to lower Gzhelian stages which drove global changes of eustatic sea level and weathering. The spatio-temporal distribution of sediment isopachs and facies indicate there were two sediment-infilling pulses, during which the southern and the northern Ordos Basin developed tidal-reworked deltas. The age spectra from detrital zircons, trace element patterns and eHf(t) values reveal that the siliciclastics forming the southern delta was sourced in the Qinling Orogenic Belt, whereas the northern delta was derived from the Xing’an-Mongolia Orogenic Belt. The source-to-sink evolution of this Upper Paleozoic system records the progressive development of orogenic belts and uplifts forming on the southern and northern margins of the NCB prior to its collisions with the South China and the Siberian plates, respectively.

Background: The risk factors for recovery from COVID-19 dyspnoea are poorly understood. We investigated determinants of recovery from dyspnoea in adults with COVID-19 and compared these to determinants of recovery from non-COVID-19 dyspnoea. Methods: We used data from two prospective cohort studies: PHOSP-COVID (patients hospitalised between March 2020 and April 2021 with COVID-19) and COVIDENCE UK (community cohort studied over the same time period). PHOSP-COVID data were collected during hospitalisation and at 5-month and 1-year follow-up visits. COVIDENCE UK data were obtained through baseline and monthly online questionnaires. Dyspnoea was measured in both cohorts with the Medical Research Council Dyspnoea Scale. We used multivariable logistic regression to identify determinants associated with a reduction in dyspnoea between 5-month and 1-year follow-up. Findings: We included 990 PHOSP-COVID and 3309 COVIDENCE UK participants. We observed higher odds of improvement between 5-month and 1-year follow-up among PHOSP-COVID participants who were younger (odds ratio 1.02 per year, 95% CI 1.01–1.03), male (1.54, 1.16–2.04), neither obese nor severely obese (1.82, 1.06–3.13 and 4.19, 2.14–8.19, respectively), had no pre-existing anxiety or depression (1.56, 1.09–2.22) or cardiovascular disease (1.33, 1.00–1.79), and shorter hospital admission (1.01 per day, 1.00–1.02). Similar associations were found in those recovering from non-COVID-19 dyspnoea, excluding age (and length of hospital admission). Interpretation: Factors associated with dyspnoea recovery at 1-year post-discharge among patients hospitalised with COVID-19 were similar to those among community controls without COVID-19. Background The impact of COVID-19 on physical and mental health and employment after hospitalisation with acute disease is not well understood. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of COVID-19-related hospitalisation on health and employment, to identify factors associated with recovery, and to describe recovery phenotypes. Methods The Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 study (PHOSP-COVID) is a multicentre, long-term follow-up study of adults (aged ≥18 years) discharged from hospital in the UK with a clinical diagnosis of COVID-19, involving an assessment between 2 and 7 months after discharge, including detailed recording of symptoms, and physiological and biochemical testing. Multivariable logistic regression was done for the primary outcome of patient-perceived recovery, with age, sex, ethnicity, body-mass index, comorbidities, and severity of acute illness as covariates. A post-hoc cluster analysis of outcomes for breathlessness, fatigue, mental health, cognitive impairment, and physical performance was done using the clustering large applications k-medoids approach. The study is registered on the ISRCTN Registry (ISRCTN10980107). Findings We report findings for 1077 patients discharged from hospital between March 5 and Nov 30, 2020, who underwent assessment at a median of 5·9 months (IQR 4·9–6·5) after discharge. Participants had a mean age of 58 years (SD 13); 384 (36%) were female, 710 (69%) were of white ethnicity, 288 (27%) had received mechanical ventilation, and 540 (50%) had at least two comorbidities. At follow-up, only 239 (29%) of 830 participants felt fully recovered, 158 (20%) of 806 had a new disability (assessed by the Washington Group Short Set on Functioning), and 124 (19%) of 641 experienced a health-related change in occupation. Factors associated with not recovering were female sex, middle age (40–59 years), two or more comorbidities, and more severe acute illness. The magnitude of the persistent health burden was substantial but only weakly associated with the severity of acute illness. Four clusters were identified with different severities of mental and physical health impairment (n=767): very severe (131 patients, 17%), severe (159, 21%), moderate along with cognitive impairment (127, 17%), and mild (350, 46%). Of the outcomes used in the cluster analysis, all were closely related except for cognitive impairment. Three (3%) of 113 patients in the very severe cluster, nine (7%) of 129 in the severe cluster, 36 (36%) of 99 in the moderate cluster, and 114 (43%) of 267 in the mild cluster reported feeling fully recovered. Persistently elevated serum C-reactive protein was positively associated with cluster severity. Interpretation We identified factors related to not recovering after hospital admission with COVID-19 at 6 months after discharge (eg, female sex, middle age, two or more comorbidities, and more acute severe illness), and four different recovery phenotypes. The severity of physical and mental health impairments were closely related, whereas cognitive health impairments were independent. In clinical care, a proactive approach is needed across the acute severity spectrum, with interdisciplinary working, wide access to COVID-19 holistic clinical services, and the potential to stratify care. Astronomically forced variations of climate are well documented in lacustrine and marine settings. However, few studies have examined astronomical forced cycles within Quaternary fluvial-fan successions. To explore whether Milankovitch cyclicity might also be present in fluvial-fan successions, we carried out high-resolution gamma-ray (GR) from downhole logging, magnetic susceptibility (MS), Rb/Sr and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis of a core from an 800-m borehole (KT11) from the Kashgar region in the western Tarim Basin, China. Spectral analyses of the GR, MS and Rb/Sr data reveal cycles with ~70 m, ~30 m and ~14 m wavelengths. These pertain to relative variations in grain size. Electron spin resonance (ESR) dating and magnetostratigraphy imply that the cored interval spans the past 1.1 Myr. This age-span constraint, coupled with the comparison of the ratios of these cycle wavelengths to expected ratios of Milankovitch frequencies, suggests that these cycles represent ~100-kyr short-eccentricity, ~40-kyr obliquity and ~20-kyr precession frequencies, respectively. We constructed an astronomical time scale (ATS) spanning the past 1.13 Myr using the ~100-kyr short-eccentricity period. The average accumulation rate is about 70 cm/kyr for this 800-m core succession, and the evolutive spectrum emphasizes that long-term sedimentation rates were stable. We also applied correlation coefficient (COCO) analysis to identify the astronomical forcing. Thus, we conclude that orbitally forced climate change was the main driver of stratigraphic alternations between sand- and clay-rich intervals in the Kashgar region. During maxima of the 100-kyr short-eccentricity cycles, which correspond to interglacial intervals, more chemical weathering and increased seasonal runoff delivered a larger amount of relatively coarser-grained sediments to the fluvial fan in the Kashgar region, and vice versa. The Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT) at ca. 0.9 to 0.65 Ma is also well recorded in our GR and Rb/Sr data, and is characterized by a shift in dominant cycle period from 41 kyr obliquity to 100 kyr eccentricity. After 0.65 Ma, the average TOC content decreases whilst Rb/Sr values increase, which suggests that there was an increase in regional aridity of the Kashgar region in the western Tarim Basin following the MPT. This regional change is synchronous with the trend toward aridification observed throughout central Asia.

The mechanisms involved in the formation of 1- to 2-Myr-long third-order stratigraphic sequences through the Phanerozoic have been extensively debated, but the main underlying forcings remain uncertain. In this study, we investigated third-order sequences of Paleocene-Eocene age in the East China Sea Shelf Basin, identifying a prominent ∼1.2-Myr periodicity in the 405-kyr-tuned gamma ray profile of the WP-1 borehole. We infer that this ∼1.2-Myr cycle, which corresponds to long-period amplitude modulation of obliquity, was the main driver of third-order sea-level changes and sequence development. This modulation entails variation in the range of obliquity amplitude between a maximum of 2.4° (i.e. 24.5°–22.1°) and a minimum of 0.3° (i.e. 23.3°–23.0°) as a result of interactions among the three primary parameters of Earth's orbit (i.e., eccentricity, obliquity, and precession). We anchored our floating astronomical time scale (ATS) to the T42 seismic horizon, a major sequence boundary between the Lin Feng and Mingyuefeng formations that corresponds to the top of Nannofossil Zone NP8 (reported age of 57.7 Ma). This yields a fixed ATS for the late Paleocene-to-middle Eocene interval spanning 60.84 to 48.71 Ma. Finally, we evaluated our findings relative to the third-order sequence stratigraphy of the East China Sea Shelf Basin and to records of early Cenozoic eustasy and global events.

A high-resolution astronomical-tuned magnetostratigraphy was obtained from a continuous 333-m succession recovered at International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Hole U1499A in the north margin of the South China Sea (SCS) during joint Legs 367 & 368. A total of 12 magnetic reversals are identified through the Pliocene and Pleistocene. The cycle analysis of natural gamma ray (NGR) data shows an average suite of ca. 33 m and 8 m wavelengths with lesser 1.5-m cycles, which are consistent with the ratios of Milankovitch orbital-climate oscillations caused by long eccentricity (405 kyr), short eccentricity (~100 kyr), and precession (~20 kyr). The astronomical-tuned magnetostratigraphy correlates with nearly all features of the Pliocene-Pleistocene geomagnetic polarity time scale. There was a significant shift to ~100-kyr-dominated cyclicity at ca. 1.3 Ma, which marks the onset of the Mid-Pleistocene Transition, during which the influx of the clay component decreased. A general enrichment in silt-sand influx during the past 0.4 Myr was punctuated by surges in coarser-grained components (lowest NGR) during or at the end of each major global glacial event. Comparison to a high-resolution sediment record spanning the Pliocene-Pleistocene on the southern margin of the SCS (ODP Site 1143) indicates common intervals of changing rates of sediment accumulation. In both regions, there are relatively lower rates of sediment accumulation during the late Zanclean (mid-Pliocene; ca. 4.1 to 3.6 Ma), early Gelasian (ca. 2.5 to 2.0 Ma), early Calabrian (ca. 1.6 to 1.4 Ma) and the earliest Middle Pleistocene (ca. 0.6 Ma). The merger of magnetostratigraphy, cyclostratigraphy and the NGR record to produce a high-resolution profile of bulk sediment accumulation rates and relative clay to sand-silt components is a powerful tool and climate proxy to reconstruct the general history of sediment input into the SCS and its relationships to East Asia monsoon and tectonic evolution.

The Oligocene is a period of continental breakup in the South China Sea and of earth surface topographic change in the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. In previous studies, Oligocene sediment from the Qiongdongnan Basin (QDNB) in the NW South China Sea has seldom been recovered, which limited understanding of basin evolution at this time. Here, we apply detrital zircon U-Pb dating to Oligocene sedimentary rocks from the QDNB. The U-Pb age populations in Lower Oligocene highlight the distinctive signatures of several competing sources providing material from nearby structural highs within the basin and Hainan island. In contrast, detrital zircon U-Pb ages of the Upper Oligocene in the central QDNB shows similarities with the Red River and/or coastal rivers in northern Vietnam. These sediments are significantly different from the Lower Oligocene. This abrupt change in the QDNB may imply that its distal sedimentary sources were initially established in the Late Oligocene. Our reconstruction of sediment discharge from proximal to distal sources in the Oligocene improves understanding of the sediment distribution in the QDNB, which will implicate the river drainage evolution and benefit the petroleum exploration of the Northwest South China Sea.

The Jurassic was mainly a “greenhouse” period characterized by global warming and by significant peat accumulations in some continental basins. However, studies of Jurassic climate and environments have mainly focused on marine records and only a few on terrestrial sediments. Yili Basin, a mid-latitude terrestrial basin in present Northwest China, included accumulation of the important recoverable coal seams. In this study, geological data, clay mineral analysis, and palynological assemblages were employed on fine-grained samples from the Su’asugou section in southern Yili Basin. The factors (paleoclimate, depositional conditions, and paleo-vegetation) impacting peat accumulation were investigated. The results suggest that the siliciclastics may have been derived from exposed Carboniferous rocks in a continental arc environment. A warm and humid paleoclimate in the Yili basin dominated during the early-Early Jurassic deposition of the Badaowan Formation and the Middle Jurassic deposition of the Xishanyao Formation. This climate contributed to high sedimentary rates and to a high productivity of peat-forming paleo-vegetation that was preserved under dysoxic conditions. In contrast, during the late-Early Jurassic between these two formations, the Sangonghe Formation was an interval of relatively aridity that included red beds preserved under more hypoxic sedimentary conditions, and with an interruption in peat formation and preservation.

The age of the beginning of magnetic polarity Chron M0r, a proposed marker for the base of the Aptian Stage, is disputed due to a divergence of published radioisotopic dates and ambiguities in stratigraphic correlation of sections. Our magnetostratigraphy of core DH1 from Svalbard, Norway, calibrates a bentonite bed, dated by U-Pb methods to 123.1 ± 0.3 Ma, to the uppermost part of magnetozone M1r, which is ∼1.9 m.y. before the beginning of Chron M0r. This is the first direct calibration of any high-precision radioisotopic date to a polarity chron of the M sequence. The interpolated age of 121.2 ± 0.4 Ma for the beginning of Chron M0r is younger by ∼5 m.y. than its estimated age used in the Geologic Time Scale 2012, which had been extrapolated from radioisotopic dates on oceanic basalts and from Aptian cyclostratigraphy. The adjusted age model implies a commensurate faster average global oceanic spreading rate of ∼12% during the Aptian–Santonian interval. Future radioisotopic dating and high-resolution cyclostratigraphy are needed to investigate where to expand the mid-Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous interval by the required ∼4 m.y.

It’s nearly forty years ago that ‘A Geologic Time Scale 1982’ appeared (Harland et al. 1982); it was succeeded by major updates in 1989 (Harland et al. 1990), 2004 and 2012 (Gradstein et al. 2004, 2012 – known as GTS2004 and GTS2012, respectively). The primary rationale was “to show as clearly as we can how such a scale has been constructed” (Harland et al. 1982). Each update was about twice the length of the previous version. Consistently aiming to achieve a common language with respect to chronostratigraphic units and geological time, these books have served as state-of-the-art summaries for the entire geological community, both in academia and industry. The last two time scale books contained a discrete and extensive chapter devoted entirely to the stratigraphy of the Paleogene, summarizing information on all stages, established GSSPs, various biozonations and the creation of the time scale (Luterbacher et al. 2004; Vandenberghe et al. 2012). After a three-year-long preparation GTS2020 was published in November 2020.All Paleocene and Oligocene stages (Danian, Selandian, Thanetian, resp. Rupelian, and Chattian) have formally ratified definitions and so have the Ypresian, Lutetian, and Priabonian stages of the Eocene. We anticipate that the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the Bartonian Stage still requires more research before all stages of the Paleogene (66-23 Ma) are formally defined. Paleogene marine microfossil groups (planktonic and larger benthic foraminifera, calcareous nannofossils, radiolarians, organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts) provide robust zonation schemes for regional to global correlation and are integrated within the magneto-biochronological framework. Since land mammal faunas are also increasingly being studied with an integrated magnetostratigraphic and/or chemostratigraphic and geochronologic approach, their age calibrations have considerably been improved since GTS2012. Stable isotope analysis and XRF (X-ray fluorescence) scanning have become key tools in Paleogene high-resolution stratigraphy, correlation, and time scale construction. Stable oxygen and carbon isotope records also provide insight into trends in paleoclimate and carbon cycling, such as the warming trend starting in the middle Paleocene and culminating during the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum, and the subsequent cooling leading to a change from greenhouse to icehouse conditions at the onset of the Oligocene. Numerous short-term isotope excursions mark high climatic variability, expressed in hyperthermal (transient global warming) events (62-40 Ma) and cooling/glaciation events (38-23 Ma). At the same time, these stable isotope excursions provide accurate stratigraphic constraints and enable land-sea correlations, such as for the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, the “Mother of all hyperthermals.” Orbital tuning of sedimentary cycles, calibrated to the geomagnetic polarity and biostratigraphic scales, has greatly improved the resolution of the Paleogene time scale over the last two decades. We now have astronomical age control for almost all geomagnetic polarity reversals, but differences between published age models still persist through the “Eocene astronomical time scale gap” spanning Chrons C20r through C22n (43.5-49.5 Ma).

The Yanchang Formation was deposited during the Middle Triassic in a vast lacustrine basin in the modern Ordos Basin and is a main target for hydrocarbon exploration in Central China. It is divided, based on sedimentary cycles and lithology, into the Chang 10 (the oldest) to Chang 1 (the youngest) members. During the deposition of the Chang 7 Member, the Ordos lake system reached its maximum depth and large volumes of organic-rich sediments were deposited. The evolution of the Ordos Basin sedimentary system during this phase is, however, not completely understood, and uncertainty still exists as for the chronostratigraphy of Chang 7 Member. We acquired palynological markers and palynofacies and a high-resolution δ13Corg record through the entire Chang 7 Member, and a ID-TIMS 206Pb/238U date of 240.95 ± 0.033 Ma from a volcanic ash bed in the middle of this Member. These imply that the maximum deepening phase of the lacustrine system was during the earliest Ladinian. Evidence of marine influence in the Ordos Basin at that time and comparison to the sea-level oscillations observed in Western Tethys suggest that a global eustatic rise and highstand may have played a role in determining lake-level variations.

Evolutionary trees showing interpretations of the divergences, lineages, extinctions and relative abundances of life forms through geologic time provide a very useful visualization for both public audiences and research communities. The Java-based TimeScale Creator platform was originally designed to present graphics of Earth history with a streamlined interface. We have added an evolutionary tree display column in addition to the array of other geo-history columns for chart making and on-screen exploration through any interval of geologic time. Features in the evolutionary tree display include on-screen images of life forms, single-click on/off control of color-coded family branches, pop-up windows giving additional details, embedded evolution charts of morphotypes that developed within genotypes, an option to make more-compact charts by allowing new evolutionary branches to reposition over earlier extinct branches, and export/import of some common evolution-data sharing formats. A suite of current public datapacks using this evolutionary-tree visualization include major vertebrate groups (including dinosaurs), marine plankton through the past ca. 70 million years, and the Tree of Life of extant organisms. Students and researchers can upload their own datasets using a simple tabular-data format from Excel-type spreadsheets. The package and external datapacks are freely available at www.timescalecreator.org . The intended audiences range from Earth-science classes in schools to paleontologists and evolutionary biologists who wish to compare their phylogenies to other geologic events and trends of Earth history.

A high-precision geologic time scale is the essential key for understanding the Earth’s evolutionary history and geologic processes. Astronomical tuning of orbitally forced stratigraphic records to construct high-resolution Astronomical Time Scales (ATS) has led to a progressive refinement of the geologic time scale over the past two decades. In turn, these studies provide new insights regarding the durations and rates of major Earth events, evolutionary processes, and climate changes, all of which provide a scientific basis for contextualizing and predicting future global change trends. South China hosts some of the best-exposed and well-dated Neoproterozoic through Mesozoic stratigraphic sections in the world; many of which are suitable for cyclostratigraphy and calibrating the geologic time scale. In North China, several Cenozoic oil-bearing basins have deep boreholes with continuous sampling and/or well logging that enable derivation of astronomically tuned time scales for an improved understanding of basin evolution and hydrocarbon generation. This Special Issue focuses on case studies of astrochronology and applied cyclostratigraphy research using reference sections within China. In this introductory overview, we: (1) summarize all existing astrochronology studies of the Neoproterozoic through Cenozoic sections within China that have been used to enhance the international geologic time scale, (2) examine briefly the astronomically forced paleoclimate information recorded in various depositional systems and the modern techniques employed to analyze the periodicity of these signals encoded within the sedimentary record, and (3) summarize the 20 contributions to this Special Issue of Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology on 'Cyclostratigraphy and Astrochronology: Case studies from China’.

Paleogeographic maps, especially when overlain on reconstructions of ancient plate positions, represent the culmination of geoscience field mapping, basin drilling, geophysical research and methods of interpretation and correlation. During the past century, Chinese geoscientists have progressively compiled and revised many depositional facies maps from the scale of individual basins to nationwide syntheses for different slices of geologic time. However, the most recent comprehensive national compilation spanning the entire Phanerozoic was in 1985, and the most recent national compilation that spans only the Paleozoic was in 2010 (Zheng, Hu, et al., 2010; which is partly reproduced in the Supplementary materials). A major challenge is to place these facies maps of the numerous individual blocks into the larger contexts of moving plates and of their relationships to adjoining regions, especially for the diverse opinions on pre-Triassic plate tectonic models of Southeast Asia. There are many challenges in compiling the paleogeography of China in the context of Southeast Asia, especially prior to the Permian. A multi-institutional coordinated paleogeography program with user-friendly shared databases and visualization outputs from the basin- to inter-national scale is a major goal in China and Southeast Asia stratigraphy and geophysical research.

Organic-matter-rich shales are the main target rocks for unconventional oil and gas exploration and development across the world. In China, shale-gas geological resources are estimated as approximately 110 × 1012 m3, with recoverable gas reserves of ca. 20 × 1012 m3. Recoverable shale-oil reserves are estimated as ca. 5 × 109 t. A total 35 important organic-matter-rich shale units have been recognized from Mesoproterozoic to Cenozoic strata across the entire China. These shales are categorized according to their origin under marine, marine–nonmarine transitional and lacustrine conditions. Shales of marine origin, with ca. 9 × 1012 m3 recoverable resources, dominate China's potential in terms of total volume of organic-carbon. Currently, the most favorable marine shales for oil and gas exploration are found in the Sichuan Basin within the lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation and in the Wufeng-Longmaxi formations of uppermost Ordovician through lower Silurian. A fortuitous combination of of sea-level variations, of paleo-productivity, of tectonic activity causing development and migration of partially closed deep basin depocenters, and of sediment accumulation rates controlled the extensive deposition and distribution of organic-matter-rich shales in these Wufeng and Longmaxi formations. Organic-matter-rich shales in marine-nonmarine transitional facies associated with coal measures occur in North China within the Carboniferous and Permian, and in South China within the Permian. These Carboniferous-Permian organic-matter-rich shales are important source rocks for the gas fields in the Ordos and Sichuan Basins. Abundant organic-rich shales are also widely distributed within coal-bearing clastics and coal-measure shales of fluvial, lacustrine, and swamp facies in Upper Triassic to Middle Jurassic successions of many basins. Lacustrine organic-rich shales were deposited during the Permian through Neogene in various freshwater to saline lake settings. Lacustrine organic-matter-rich shales are the main oil source rocks in the Songliao, Bohai Bay, Ordos and Junggar basins. Lacustrine algae contributed to the rain of organic matter; and the preservation of organic matter and distribution of organic-rich shale was controlled by lake currents, water depth and oxygen-poor conditions, with enhanced preservation when buried by turbidity currents. Algal blooms were partly induced by trace nutrients from volcanic ash falls in all of these lacustrine basins. Seawater intrusion into the freshwater lake of the Songliao Basin promoted some episodes of black shales. Saline lacustrine basins, such as middle Permian Junggar Basin, contain organic-rich dolomite mudstone that mainly formed during hot climate conditions when the lakes had high salinity and stratified water columns that deprived the bottom waters of oxygen, thereby preserving massive amounts of organic matter. Laminated calcite-rich mudstone in the saline lacustrine settings formed in more brackish waters under stable warm conditions and weak biological activity. The modeling of the factors controlling the distribution of organic-matter-rich shales within China's basins is important for the exploration and development of unconventional oil and gas resources.

Biotic activities are involved in almost all sedimentation processes throughout the evolutionary history of life on our planet. However, deep-time organism-induced sedimentation and biosedimentary records remain unclear in terms of lithologic types, strata stacking patterns and possible controlling factors. We document biosedimentary features of major transitions from microbe-dominated switching to metazoan-dominated biosedimentary systems based on the global distributions of both microbial and metazoan carbonates through Precambrian to Phanerozoic times, with emphasis on sedimentary records from China. The compilation of 150 and 180 well-documented metazoan and microbial reefs, respectively, from China, reveals that metazoan reefs proliferated during the Middle Ordovician, Middle Devonian and Middle Permian, whereas microbial reefs were well developed during the Cambrian, Late Devonian and Early–Middle Triassic, plus a moderate development during the early Silurian. These stratigraphic abundances of metazoan and microbial carbonates of China generally match the global patterns. The updated variation trends of microbial and metazoan carbonates throughout the late Precambrian and Phanerozoic reveal that there were five major microbe-metazoan transitions (MMTs): the late Ediacaran, the Cambrian, and the aftermaths of the mass extinctions of the end-Ordovician, Late Devonian, and end-Permian. The late Ediacaran MMT began with microbe-dominated oceans with occasional occurrences of metazoans. The presence of Cloudina-dominated reefs in the latest Ediacaran marks the completion of the switching of this microbe-dominated depositional system into a metazoan-dominated system. The Cambrian saw the expansion of skeletal microbes (i.e., Epiphyton, Renalcis) in the oceans; and the stratigraphic successions yield the most diverse biosedimentary deposits and/or structures of the entire Phanerozoic. The Cambrian MMT was the longest microbial-metazoan alternation period and is marked by two metazoan occurrence peaks marked by dominance of abundant archaeocyath buildups during its Epoch 2 and by maceriate and lithistid sponge reefs during the late Furongian Epoch. The early Silurian in China saw the deposition of a thick suite of organic-rich black shales followed by alternations of microbe-rich sediments (oil shales) and metazoan-bearing deposits, which are replaced by microbial and metazoan reefs during the late early Silurian. The Late Devonian MMT started during the late Frasnian and persisted into the early Mississippian, and thus extended slightly longer than the aftermath of the Frasnian–Famennian extinction interval. Alternating occurrences of microbial and metazoan reefs characterize this Late Devonian MMT. Almost all microbe-mediated sediments/structures observed in the Cambrian MMT reoccurred in the aftermath of the end-Permian mass extinction during the Early–Middle Triassic MMT, suggesting high similarities between those two MMTs. Cambrian and Early–Middle Triassic MMTs also share comparable carbon and sulfur isotopic perturbations, warming regimes, and generally oxygen-deficient seawaters. Some of these environmental and climatic extremes may also occur during other MMTs, but they usually did not occur synchronously. Most MMTs seem to have undergone four developmental stages. They initiated as microbe-dominated successions (Stage A), and then were characterized by alternations of microbe-dominated and of metazoan-bearing or bioturbated successions (Stage B). Both microbial and metazoan reefs co-occurred during Stage C; and a dominance of metazoan reefs marks the development of Stage D. Ediacaran and Cambrian MMTs seem to have undergone the first three development stages, whereas the three post-extinction MMTs experienced the full set of Stages A−D, corresponding to metazoan survival, initial recovery and full recovery. The majority of volatile-rich Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs), coupled with intensive acidification events, anoxia and global warming regimes, took place during the Mesozoic–Cenozoic. However, microbe-dominated sediments were only widely deposited during the Early Triassic, and greatly declined after that time. Therefore, it seems that microbial abundance in MMTs may not be directly related to these extreme LIP events. This is probably because a primary source of food for the metazoans might have shifted to phytoplankton (e.g., coccoliths, dinoflagellates, and radiolarians) in the marine waters since the Triassic. Certainly, the pre-Mesozoic oceans were not dominated by phytoplankton. Perturbations in the carbon isotope record characterize all MMTs, and thus may be reliable proxies indicating MMT biosedimentary systems.

Multiple proxies for paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental change within sedimentary sequences have been developed; but understanding their relationships and their relative strengths or weaknesses are required to access a wealth of untapped paleoclimate information. We propose two main criteria for multiple proxy datasets to estimate their individual signal-to-noise levels and to decipher the relationship between multiple proxies. First, for proxies affected by similar processes, then their time-dependent changes should be similar. Second, a paleoclimate proxy that is more sensitive to an external forcing, such as astronomical forcing, is more useful than those that do not have such a response. We introduce two methods to evaluate these criteria: (1) hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) probes the relationships among multiple proxies based on similarities of their oscillation patterns, and (2) power decomposition analysis (PDA) tests proxy sensitivity to external climate forcing. We evaluate 16 high-resolution paleoclimate proxies in detail for their applications in paleoclimatology from the marine Lower Triassic Daye Formation at the Daxiakou section in the Three Gorges region of South China, which has carbonate-claystone cycles deposited on an outer ramp. The proxies are spectral gamma ray (gamma-ray intensity, potassium, uranium, thorium, thorium/uranium and thorium/potassium), rock color lightness (L*), redness (a*) and yellowness (b*), magnetic susceptibility (measured in both laboratory and outcrop), anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM), lithologic rank, simplified lithologic rank and non-carbonate fraction, carbonate thickness and couplet thickness. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) gathers these proxies into groups likely affected by the same process. The ARM and thorium/uranium proxies seem to reflect the hinterland-weathering process during the Early Triassic. Gamma-ray, potassium, uranium, thorium, magnetic susceptibility and non-carbonate fraction proxies refer to terrestrial input. The L*, a* and lithologic rank proxies indicate the productivity, the redox state and the relative sea level, respectively at this section. This case study contributes to the understanding of the sensitivity of these types of proxies within marine strata for deep-time paleoclimate and astronomical-tuned time scales.

Our knowledge of the history of our planet comes from deciphering the sedimentary record of biologic, ecologic, geochemical, climatic, physical and other systems using a vast array of tools and innovative techniques. To synthesize these trends and events into a coherent global history requires six inter-connected international efforts: (1) documentation and access to major research reference sections, including standardization of convenient and precise terminology for divisions of geologic time (e.g., Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSPs) and within-stage levels), (2) inter-calibration of these marine and terrestrial records both within and among different regions to compile a global integrated scale, (3) improving and applying age models to understand cause-effect relationships and rates of processes, (4) public databases and syntheses, (5) international efforts and centers, and (6) Earth-systems geo-education that emphases relationships among fields in addition to training in particular specializations. In the past two decades, the careful analysis of the sedimentary records in China's marine and terrestrial basins have enabled major leaps in our understanding of Earth's history, such as major excursions of the carbon cycle during the Cambrian, “lethal” temperature excursions in Early Triassic, Cretaceous evolution of birds, and catastrophic impacts of large igneous eruptions. China has provided more reference sections for the international definition of GSSPs than any other country. It is vital to put those records from the China basins into a larger global context.

Nearly 90% of the Ediacaran Period (635-541 Ma) of the Neoproterozoic is represented by the Doushantuo Formation (DST Fm) in South China. Its lowest Member I is a 3.7 m-thick cap carbonate deposited at the termination of the Cryogenian Marinoan glaciation. The DST Fm consists of alternating organic-rich black shale and thinly bedded dolostone, and it contains some of the oldest records of multi-cellular life and three pronounced negative carbon isotope excursions. The Jiulongwan (JLW) section is a well-studied reference section for these Ediacaran events. Spectral analysis of geochemical data through the lower DST Fm (22.3 m) shows 27 predominant ∼90 cm sedimentary cycles that correspond to 405-ka long eccentricity cycles. The power spectra of the 405-ka tuned Ca and Fe/Ti series show significant peaks at ∼1.2-Ma, 405-ka, 133-ka, 128-ka, 100-ka, 82-ka, ∼31-ka and 29-ka periods, respectively. A 11.16 Ma-long astronomical time scale has been constructed for the lower DST Fm and provide a duration of 1.6 Ma for the cap carbonate (Member I) based on the 405-ka long eccentricity cycle tuning. Using the U-Pb age of 635.2 ± 0.6 Ma for the volcanic ash bed at the Member I/II boundary, we proposed a 636.8 Ma age for the base of the DST Fm. These ages and astronomical timescale provide important new constraints on the subdivision of Ediacaran strata, and have implications for understanding the character of the first negative δ 13 C excursion (EN1). Orbital forcing may have been played an important role for the climate changes and the evolution of Ediacaran multi-cellular life and the carbon cycle variations.

The Early Permian is recognized as the peak of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA), and ice sheet covered most of Gondwana. During this time interval, the North China Craton (NCC) developed abundant economic coal seams within the Taiyuan Formation and the Lower Shanxi Formation. However, coal seams are absent in the Upper Shanxi Formation. In order to explore whether a change in paleoclimatic conditions may have been a factor in this coal-forming episode termination, we conducted a chemical weathering study on the Shanxi and Xiashihezi formations in the Ordos Basin of the NCC. Multiple chemical weathering indices (CIA, CIW, CIX, PIA and WIP) calculated from geochemical ratios in mudstones and derived paleotemperature estimates indicate that the chemical weathering intensity underwent a rapid decrease near the base of the Sakmarian Stage, remained low through the lower Sakmarian, then fluctuated at relatively high levels through the upper Sakmarian. A second drop in weathering intensity occurred near the base of the Artinskian Stage. This pattern was produced by cool climates during the Early Sakmarian associated with the P1 glacial interval (the first stage of the Permian glaciation), by a high temperature climate corresponding to the interglacial interval during Late Sakmarian, and then by another cooling into the P2 glacial at the beginning of the Artinskian. Similar changes in chemical weathering indices occur in the Parana Basin of South America in southern high latitudes and in the mid-latitude Junggar Basin that is now in Northwest China. This chemical weathering trend mirrors reconstructed paleotemperature from global sea-level changes, from fusulinids diversity on North American shelves, and from atmospheric CO2 concentrations. A sharp decline of coal seams on the NCC is related to the mass extinction of wetland plants. The Late Sakmarian high-temperature event played an important role, and the continuous drift of the NCC toward higher latitudes and the regression associated with orographic uplift also exacerbated regional aridification.

Currently, no large-scale economic resources of soluble in situ potash ore have been found in China in marine strata. The marine evaporites of China mainly occur in deeply buried, older geological strata in the Sichuan, Ordos, and Tarim basins, which make it difficult to predict prospective potash deposits. Based on the analysis of facies and the unique geological background of the original small-scale plate-tectonic terrains where evaporite-bearing marine strata were deposited, we established depositional models for epeiric evaporites and the formation of K+-rich brines. These models imply that the ancient marine strata are not favorable for the formation of the large-scale economic in situ potash deposits because the pre-Late Triassic tectonic plates that later aggregated to form modern China were mainly separate isolated terrains in the paleo-ocean. On such small blocks, the episodes of epeiric seas did develop evaporite precipitation from high-salinity bottom waters below the central portions of semi-restricted basins through the classic centripetal enrichment mechanism of seawater, in which a vertical stratification leads to a downward increase in the concentration of halogen ions. However, in contrast to most massive evaporite deposits that formed on larger tectonic plates, the typical basins on these small terrains did not have a large enough radius to concentrate brine ions to the same degree. Therefore, the precipitation of potash minerals from the saline brines did not attain adequate saturation for an extended time to form commercially economic in situ potash evaporites. We conclude that the probability of discovering an in situ commercial-quality deposit of marine potash deposit is very unlikely in China. However, potassium ions of concentrated seawater could be hosted within permeable subsurface lithologies in the form of an initial K+-rich residual brine. Potentially, such an initial K+-rich brine that was retained within pores in marine evaporites and carbonates could migrate into appropriate traps under the action of the geo-hydrodynamic field to produce a secondary K+-enrichment in fluids. A related dual-step K+-enrichment mechanism by geofluids often occurs in marine petroliferous basin, which results in a coupling of the hydrocarbon and K+-rich brine accumulations. Therefore, we suggest that future exploration for economic potash concentrations within China’s basins should be targeted toward potential K+-rich brines that may reside within traps of permeable carbonate reservoirs.
