Drought and salinity have become major environmental problems that affect the production of agriculture, forestry and horticulture. The identification of stress-tolerant genes from plants adaptive to harsh environments might be a feasible strategy for plant genetic improvement to address the challenges brought by global climate changes. In this study, a dehydration-upregulated gene MfWRKY7 of resurrection Plant Myrothamnusflabellifolia, encoding a group IId WRKY transcription factor, was cloned and characterized. The overexpression of MfWRKY7 in Arabidopsis increased root length and tolerance to drought and NaCl at both seedling and adult stages. Further investigation indicated that MfWRKY7 transgenic plants had higher contents of chlorophyll, proline, soluble protein, and soluble sugar but a lower water loss rate and malondialdehyde content compared with wild-type plants under both drought and salinity stresses. Moreover, the higher activities of antioxidant enzymes and lower accumulation of O2- and H2O2 in MfWRKY7 transgenic plants were also found, indicating enhanced antioxidation capacity by MfWRKY7. These findings showed that MfWRKY7 may function in positive regulation of responses to drought and salinity stresses, and therefore, it has potential application value in genetic improvement of plant tolerance to abiotic stress.

Unique to plants, growth regulatory factors (GRFs) play important roles in plant growth and reproduction. This study investigated the evolutionary and functional characteristics associated with plant growth. Using genome-wide analysis of 15 plant species, 173 members of the GRF family were identified and phylogenetically categorized into six groups. All members contained WRC and QLQ conserved domains, and the family’s expansion largely depended on segmental duplication. The promoter region of the GRF gene family mainly contained four types of cis-acting elements (light-responsive elements, development-related elements, hormone-responsive elements, and environmental stress-related elements) that are mainly related to gene expression levels. Functional divergence analysis revealed that changes in amino acid site evolution rate played a major role in the differentiation of the GRF gene family, with ten significant sites identified. Six significant sites were identified for positive selection. Moreover, the four groups of coevolutionary sites identified may play a key role in regulating the transcriptional activation of the GRF protein. Expression profiles revealed that GRF genes were generally highly expressed in young plant tissues and had tissue or organ expression specificity, demonstrating their functional conservation with distinct divergence. The results of these sequence and expression analyses are expected to provide molecular evolutionary and functional references for the plant GRF gene family.

Summary Single-neuron morphology, the study of the structure, form, and shape of a group of specialized cells in the nervous system, is of vital importance to define the type of neurons, assess changes in neuronal development and aging and determine the effects of brain disorders and treatments. Despite the recent surge in the amount of available neuron morphology reconstructions due to advancements in microscopy imaging, existing computational and deep learning methods for modeling neuron morphology have been limited in both scale and accuracy. In this paper, we propose MorphRep, a model for learning meaningful representation of neuron morphology pre-trained with over 250 000 existing neuron morphology data. By encoding the neuron morphology into graph-structured data, using graph transformers for feature encoding and enforcing the consistency between multiple augmented views of neuron morphology, MorphRep achieves the state of the art performance on widely used benchmarking datasets. Meanwhile, MorphRep can accurately characterize the neuron morphology space across neuron morphometrics, fine-grained cell types, brain regions and ages. Furthermore, MorphRep can be applied to distinguish neurons under a wide range of conditions, including genetic perturbation, drug injection, environment change and disease. In summary, MorphRep provides an effective strategy to embed and represent neuron morphology and can be a valuable tool in integrating cell morphology into single-cell multiomics analysis. In recent years, the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia (NRA) has garnered significant research attention. However, the complex multi-step proton–electron transfer process often results in various by-products, limiting NH3 production. Therefore, designing and developing highly active and selective electrocatalysts for efficient NRA is crucial. This study proposes a method to construct Cu/Cu2O nanosheet arrays with heterogeneous interfaces and oxygen vacancies on copper foam surfaces through electrochemical reduction. The interface coupling between Cu and Cu2O significantly optimizes the catalyst's surface electronic structure, providing sufficient active sites. In addition, the presence of oxygen vacancies in Cu/Cu2O can optimize the adsorption kinetics of intermediates in the NRA process and effectively inhibit the formation of by-products. The results show that Cu/CuO2 nanosheet arrays are superior NRA catalysts, achieving a Faradaic efficiency of up to 91.1%, a nitrate conversion of 96.25%, and an NH3 yield rate of 6.11 mg h−1 cm−2. There has been an increasing recognition of the efficacy of various clay mineral elements in absorbing heavy metallic ions, which can be attributed to their cost-effectiveness, widespread, precise floor area, and remarkable practical groups. A co-pyrolyzing calcite/biochar (CP-CAL/BC) composite was prepared in this study by co-pyrolyzing calcite (CP-CAL) and coconut shell (CS) at 650–750 °C. Several methods were employed to analyze the properties of the synthesized composite. The composite showed efficient adsorption of Pb2+ at a pH of 4.5, primarily by the process of monolayer chemisorption, which is influenced by the composite's pore structure and boundary layer diffusion. After several repeated experiments, it was observed that all of the CP-CAL/BC composites possessed exceptional regeneration capabilities, consistently removing Pb2+ at high rates. The CP-CAL/BC composite produced at 750 °C showed the greatest extent of resistance to corrosion, surpassing all other composites with a decrease in corrosion of 7.298 × 10−6 A/cm2. The present study confirmed that the CP-CAL/BC composite material has efficient adsorption features for Pb2+ and strong regenerative capability.
