Nucleus instance segmentation from histopathology images suffers from the extremely laborious and expert-dependent annotation of nucleus instances. As a promising solution to this task, annotation-efficient deep learning paradigms have recently attracted much research interest, such as weakly-/semi-supervised learning, generative adversarial learning, etc. In this paper, we propose to formulate annotation-efficient nucleus instance segmentation from the perspective of few-shot learning (FSL). Our work was motivated by that, with the prosperity of computational pathology, an increasing number of fully-annotated datasets are publicly accessible, and we hope to leverage these external datasets to assist nucleus instance segmentation on the target dataset which only has very limited annotation. To achieve this goal, we adopt the meta-learning based FSL paradigm, which however has to be tailored in two substantial aspects before adapting to our task. First, since the novel classes may be inconsistent with those of the external dataset, we extend the basic definition of few-shot instance segmentation (FSIS) to generalized few-shot instance segmentation (GFSIS). Second, to cope with the intrinsic challenges of nucleus segmentation, including touching between adjacent cells, cellular heterogeneity, etc., we further introduce a structural guidance mechanism into the GFSIS network, finally leading to a unified Structurally-Guided Generalized Few-Shot Instance Segmentation (SGFSIS) framework. Extensive experiments on a couple of publicly accessible datasets demonstrate that, SGFSIS can outperform other annotation-efficient learning baselines, including semi-supervised learning, simple transfer learning, etc., with comparable performance to fully supervised learning with less than 5% annotations.

Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT have exhibited remarkable performance in generating human-like texts. However, machine-generated texts (MGTs) may carry critical risks, such as plagiarism issues, misleading information, or hallucination issues. Therefore, it is very urgent and important to detect MGTs in many situations. Unfortunately, it is challenging to distinguish MGTs and human-written texts because the distributional discrepancy between them is often very subtle due to the remarkable performance of LLMs. In this paper, we seek to exploit \textit{maximum mean discrepancy} (MMD) to address this issue in the sense that MMD can well identify distributional discrepancies. However, directly training a detector with MMD using diverse MGTs will incur a significantly increased variance of MMD since MGTs may contain \textit{multiple text populations} due to various LLMs. This will severely impair MMD's ability to measure the difference between two samples. To tackle this, we propose a novel \textit{multi-population} aware optimization method for MMD called MMD-MP, which can \textit{avoid variance increases} and thus improve the stability to measure the distributional discrepancy. Relying on MMD-MP, we develop two methods for paragraph-based and sentence-based detection, respectively. Extensive experiments on various LLMs, \eg, GPT2 and ChatGPT, show superior detection performance of our MMD-MP. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), invasive or non-invasive, have projected unparalleled vision and promise for assisting patients in need to better their interaction with the surroundings. Inspired by the BCI-based rehabilitation technologies for nerve-system impairments and amputation, we propose an electromagnetic brain-computer-metasurface (EBCM) paradigm, regulated by human's cognition by brain signals directly and non-invasively. We experimentally show that our EBCM platform can translate human's mind from evoked potentials of P300-based electroencephalography to digital coding information in the electromagnetic domain non-invasively, which can be further processed and transported by an information metasurface in automated and wireless fashions. Directly wireless communications of the human minds are performed between two EBCM operators with accurate text transmissions. Moreover, several other proof-of-concept mind-control schemes are presented using the same EBCM platform, exhibiting flexibly-customized capabilities of information processing and synthesis like visual-beam scanning, wave modulations, and pattern encoding.

Existing Voice Cloning (VC) tasks aim to convert a paragraph text to a speech with desired voice specified by a reference audio. This has significantly boosted the development of artificial speech applications. However, there also exist many scenarios that cannot be well reflected by these VC tasks, such as movie dubbing, which requires the speech to be with emotions consistent with the movie plots. To fill this gap, in this work we propose a new task named Visual Voice Cloning (V2C), which seeks to convert a paragraph of text to a speech with both desired voice specified by a reference audio and desired emotion specified by a reference video. To facilitate research in this field, we construct a dataset, V2C-Animation, and propose a strong baseline based on existing state-of-the-art (SoTA) VC techniques. Our dataset contains 10,217 animated movie clips covering a large variety of genres (e.g., Comedy, Fantasy) and emotions (e.g., happy, sad). We further design a set of evaluation metrics, named MCD-DTW-SL, which help evaluate the similarity between ground-truth speeches and the synthesised ones. Extensive experimental results show that even SoTA VC methods cannot generate satisfying speeches for our V2C task. We hope the proposed new task together with the constructed dataset and evaluation metric will facilitate the research in the field of voice cloning and the broader vision-and-language community., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

In many real-world applications, we often need to handle various deployment scenarios, where the resource constraint and the superclass of interest corresponding to a group of classes are dynamically specified. How to efficiently deploy deep models for diverse deployment scenarios is a new challenge. Previous NAS approaches seek to design architectures for all classes simultaneously, which may not be optimal for some individual superclasses. A straightforward solution is to search an architecture from scratch for each deployment scenario, which however is computation-intensive and impractical. To address this, we present a novel and general framework, called Elastic Architecture Search (EAS), permitting instant specializations at runtime for diverse superclasses with various resource constraints. To this end, we first propose to effectively train an over-parameterized network via a superclass dropout strategy during training. In this way, the resulting model is robust to the subsequent superclasses dropping at inference time. Based on the well-trained over-parameterized network, we then propose an efficient architecture generator to obtain promising architectures within a single forward pass. Experiments on three image classification datasets show that EAS is able to find more compact networks with better performance while remarkably being orders of magnitude faster than state-of-the-art NAS methods, e.g., outperforming OFA (once-for-all) by 1.3% on Top-1 accuracy at a budget around 361M #MAdds on ImageNet-10. 3D LiDAR (light detection and ranging) semantic segmentation is important in scene understanding for many applications, such as auto-driving and robotics. For example, for autonomous cars equipped with RGB cameras and LiDAR, it is crucial to fuse complementary information from different sensors for robust and accurate segmentation. Existing fusion-based methods, however, may not achieve promising performance due to the vast difference between the two modalities. In this work, we investigate a collaborative fusion scheme called perception-aware multi-sensor fusion (PMF) to exploit perceptual information from two modalities, namely, appearance information from RGB images and spatio-depth information from point clouds. To this end, we first project point clouds to the camera coordinates to provide spatio-depth information for RGB images. Then, we propose a two-stream network to extract features from the two modalities, separately, and fuse the features by effective residual-based fusion modules. Moreover, we propose additional perception-aware losses to measure the perceptual difference between the two modalities. Extensive experiments on two benchmark data sets show the superiority of our method. For example, on nuScenes, our PMF outperforms the state-of-the-art method by 0.8 in mIoU., Comment: 20 pages. Category-level 6D object pose and size estimation is to predict full pose configurations of rotation, translation, and size for object instances observed in single, arbitrary views of cluttered scenes. In this paper, we propose a new method of Dual Pose Network with refined learning of pose consistency for this task, shortened as DualPoseNet. DualPoseNet stacks two parallel pose decoders on top of a shared pose encoder, where the implicit decoder predicts object poses with a working mechanism different from that of the explicit one; they thus impose complementary supervision on the training of pose encoder. We construct the encoder based on spherical convolutions, and design a module of Spherical Fusion wherein for a better embedding of pose-sensitive features from the appearance and shape observations. Given no testing CAD models, it is the novel introduction of the implicit decoder that enables the refined pose prediction during testing, by enforcing the predicted pose consistency between the two decoders using a self-adaptive loss term. Thorough experiments on benchmarks of both category- and instance-level object pose datasets confirm efficacy of our designs. DualPoseNet outperforms existing methods with a large margin in the regime of high precision. Few-shot instance segmentation (FSIS) conjoins the few-shot learning paradigm with general instance segmentation, which provides a possible way of tackling instance segmentation in the lack of abundant labeled data for training. This paper presents a Fully Guided Network (FGN) for few-shot instance segmentation. FGN perceives FSIS as a guided model where a so-called support set is encoded and utilized to guide the predictions of a base instance segmentation network (i.e., Mask R-CNN), critical to which is the guidance mechanism. In this view, FGN introduces different guidance mechanisms into the various key components in Mask R-CNN, including Attention-Guided RPN, Relation-Guided Detector, and Attention-Guided FCN, in order to make full use of the guidance effect from the support set and adapt better to the inter-class generalization. The interactive image segmentation algorithm can provide an intelligent ways to understand the intention of user input. Many interactive methods have the problem of that ask for large number of user input. To efficient produce intuitive segmentation under limited user input is important for industrial application. In this paper, we reveal a positive feedback system on image segmentation to show the pixels of self-learning. Two approaches, iterative random walks and boundary random walks, are proposed for segmentation potential, which is the key step in feedback system. Experiment results on image segmentation indicates that proposed algorithms can obtain more efficient input to random walks.
