Abstract

We have analyzed the microwave behavior of soft nanogranular [([Fe.sub.0.7] [Co.sub.0.3]).sub.71]B.sub.22][Ni.sub.7] films which present a de permeability from 60 to 280, a resistivity of 8 to 9 [10.sup.-7] [OMEGA] m and a zero-field double ferromagnetic resonance peak at frequencies ranging from 3.8 to 8.35 GHz. The high frequency and large line-width of the observed resonances allows for possible applications in microwave absorbers in a frequency range extending from 6 to 10 GHz. Abstract

We have investigated the microwave properties of a set of Co-Fe-Al-O films with different thicknesses. The films show a well-defined in-plane anisotropy due to the bias field applied during deposition. The resonance frequency is determined through the scattering parameters measured with a vector network analyzer and a probing station connected to a coplanar waveguide. The results show that the resonance peak features depend on the direction of the applied/RF field and on the applied field history. Abstract

Hernias are generally repaired using synthetic prostheses. Infection may already be present or develop during implantation. Based on the increasing resistance to antibiotics, and the well-known antimicrobial properties of silver (Ag), the possibility of coating hernia prostheses with a nanostructured layer containing Ag was explored. Prostheses (Clear Mesh Composite [CMC]) made up of two polypropylene layers (macroporous light mesh and thin transparent film) were tested with human mesothelial cells from omentum biopsies. Mesotheliocytes modulate abdominal wall healing producing cytokines, growth factors, and adhesion molecules. Evaluating the growth of these cells on CMC or film alone showed that cell numbers on CMC increased over time, and were higher than those on film alone. The characterization and analysis of the static and microwave magnetic properties of ([Fe.sub.0.7][Co.sub.0.3]71B22Ni7 nongranular ferromagnetic films are performed. The combination of the reasonable values of permeability and high ferromagnetic resistance frequency makes these nanogranular materials useful in the development of inductive microwave components.

Abstract

The static and microwave magnetic properties of soft nanogranular (Fe0.7Co0.3)71B22Ni films with a 2 T saturation magnetization are presented as functions of thickness, ranging from 136 to 235 nm. Microwave permeability values from 60 to 260 are measured and ferromagnetic resonance frequencies up to 6.8 GHz are found using a vector network analyzer, connected to coplanar/microstrip structures loaded with the ferromagnetic films. Topographic and magnetic structures down to 20–40 nm were observed by atomic/magnetic force microscopy. The combination of reasonable values of the permeability and high ferromagnetic resonance frequency makes these nanogranular materials useful in the development of inductive microwave components. 49. Antibacterial Nanocoatings for Ocular Applications

Abstract

Bacterial issues in ophthalmic applications, with particular reference to postoperative infection of ocular implants, cause significant problems that often require additional, stressful and expensive treatments for the patients. In this work we applied silver-containing antibacterial costings on two kinds of polymeric ocular devices, i.e. silicone scleral buckles for retinal detachment surgery and poly(methyl methacrylate) artificial eyes for enucleated patients. The coatings (thickness around 50 nm), constituted by silver nanoclusters embedded in a silica matrix, were produced by RF co-sputtering and investigated by SEM and EDS. The antibacterial effect of the coating was confirmed by the in vitro formation of an inhibition halo against Staphylococcus aureus, which is one of the most common pathogens involved in ocular infections. The approach proposed in this study for treating implant-related ocular infections can have a significant impact in the field of ophthalmic biomaterials, suggesting a valuable alternative to the administration of antibiotics that may become ineffective towards resistant bacterial strains.
