Abstract

Foundation models pretrained on large-scale datasets via self-supervised learning demonstrate exceptional versatility across various tasks. Due to the heterogeneity and hard-to-collect medical data, this approach is especially beneficial for medical image analysis and neuroscience research, as it streamlines broad downstream tasks without the need for numerous costly annotations. However, there has been limited investigation into brain network foundation models, limiting their adaptability and generalizability for broad neuroscience studies. In this study, we aim to bridge this gap. In particular, (1) we curated a comprehensive dataset by collating images from 30 datasets, which comprises 70,781 samples of 46,686 participants. Moreover, we introduce pseudo-functional connectivity (pFC) to further generates millions of augmented brain networks by randomly dropping certain timepoints of the BOLD signal. (2) We propose the BrainMass framework for brain network self-supervised learning via mask modeling and feature alignment. BrainMass employs Mask-ROI Modeling (MRM) to bolster intra-network dependencies and regional specificity. Furthermore, Latent Representation Alignment (LRA) module is utilized to regularize augmented brain networks of the same participant with similar topological properties to yield similar latent representations by aligning their latent embeddings. Extensive experiments on eight internal tasks and seven external brain disorder diagnosis tasks show BrainMass's superior performance, highlighting its significant generalizability and adaptability. Nonetheless, BrainMass demonstrates powerful few/zero-shot learning abilities and exhibits meaningful interpretation to various diseases, showcasing its potential use for clinical applications.

Abstract

InN quantum dots (QDs) are considered to be promising nanostructures for different device applications. For any hexagonal AB stacking semiconductor system, polarity is an important feature which affects the electronic properties. Therefore, the determination of this characteristic on any wurtzite (semi)polar III nitride compound or alloy is essential for defining its applicability. In this paper, the polarity of InN QDs grown on silicon by indium droplet epitaxy plus nitridation and annealing was determined by a modified approach combining exit wave reconstruction with negative spherical aberration high resolution lattice imaging using TEM. Comparing the micrographs of two QDs from the same TEM specimen with the simulated images of InN slab structures generated under the same conditions as of the experiments, it was confirmed that the QDs of the present study are N polar. Given that the settlement of material's polarity has always been a tedious, indirect and controversial issue, the major value of our proposal is to provide a straightforward procedure to determine the polar direction from atomic-resolution focal series images., Comment: 7 pages 5 figures

Abstract

The mathematical modeling and the stability analysis of multi-lane traffic in the macroscopic scale is considered. We propose a new first order model derived from microscopic dynamics with lane changing, leading to a coupled system of hyperbolic balance laws. The macroscopic limit is derived without assuming ad hoc space and time scalings. The analysis of the stability of the equilibria of the model is discussed. The proposed numerical tests confirm the theoretical findings between the macroscopic and microscopic modeling, and the results of the stability analysis.

Abstract

Phase transitions are key in determining and controlling the quantum properties of correlated materials. Here, by using the powerful combination of precise material synthesis and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we show evidence for a genuine Mott transition undressed of any symmetry breaking side effects in the thin-films of V$_{2}$O$_{3}$. In particular, and in sharp contrast with the bulk V$_{2}$O$_{3}$ crystals, we unveil the purely electronic dynamics approaching the metal-insulator transition, disentangled from the structural transformation that is prevented by the residual substrate-induced strain. On approaching the transition, the spectral signal evolves surprisingly slowly over a wide temperature range, the Fermi wave-vector does not change, and the critical temperature appears to be much lower than the one reported for the bulk. Our findings are on one side fundamental in demonstrating the universal benchmarks of a genuine non-symmetry breaking Mott transition, extendable to a large array of correlated quantum systems and, on the other, given that the fatal structural breakdown is avoided, they hold promise of exploiting the metal-insulator transition by implementing V$_{2}$O$_{3}$ thin films in devices.

21. Stability analysis of microscopic models for traffic flow with lane changing

Abstract

This paper investigates the mathematical modeling and the stability of multi-lane traffic in the microscopic scale, studying a model based on two interaction terms. To do this we propose simple lane changing conditions and we study the stability of the steady states starting from the model in the one-lane case and extending the results to the generic multi-lane case with the careful design of the lane changing rules. We compare the results with numerical tests, that confirm the predictions of the linear stability analysis and also show that the model is able to reproduce stop & go waves, a typical feature of congested traffic.

Abstract

Understanding how a spin current flows across metal-semiconductor interfaces at pico- and femtosecond timescales has implications for ultrafast spintronics, data processing and storage applications. However, the possibility to directly access the propagation of spin currents on such time scales has been hampered by the simultaneous lack of both ultrafast element specific magnetic sensitive probes and tailored metal-semiconductor interfaces. Here, by means of free electron laser-based element sensitive Kerr spectroscopy, we report direct experimental evidence of spin currents across a Ni/Si interface in the form of different magnetodynamics at the Ni M2,3 and Si L2,3 absorption edges. This further allows us to calculate the propagation velocity of the spin current in silicon, which is on the order of 0.2 nm/fs.

Abstract

In this paper we generalize a classical result of Bour concerning helicoidal surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space R^3 to the case of helicoidal surfaces in the Bianchi-Cartan-Vranceanu (BCV) spaces, i.e. in the Riemannian 3-manifolds whose metrics have groups of isometries of dimension $4$ or $6$, except the hyperbolic one. In particular, we prove that in a BCV-space there exists a two-parameter family of helicoidal surfaces isometric to a given helicoidal surface; then, by making use of this two-parameter representation, we characterize helicoidal surfaces which have constant mean curvature, including the minimal ones., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

There are limited data on vascular, inflammatory, metabolic risk factors of dementia in Parkinson's disease (PD) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) (PD-DM). In a study of 928 subjects comprising of 215 PD with DM (including 31 PD-DM with dementia, PD-DMD), 341 PD without DM (including 31 PD with dementia, PDD) and 372 DM without PD (including 35 DM with dementia, DMD) patients, we investigated if vascular, inflammatory, metabolic, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) markers were associated with dementia in PD-DM. Lower fasting blood glucose (FBG15μmol/L, OR=3.131; 95%CI: 1.243-7.888; p=0.015) and hyperlipidemia (OR=3.075; 95%CI: 1.142-8.277; p=0.026), increased age (OR=1.043; 95%CI: 1.003-1.084; p=0.034) were the most significant risk factors in PDD patients. Lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C4g/L, OR=4.066; 95%CI: 1.467-11.274; p=0.007) were the most significant risk factors in PD-DMD patients. The area under the curve (AUC) for fibrinogen and LDL-C was 0.717 (P=0.001), with a sensitivity of 80.0% for the prediction of PD-DMD.In summary, we identified several factors including LDL-C and fibrinogen as significant risk factors for PD-DMD and these may have prognostic and treatment implications.

Abstract

In this paper, we prove important results concerning the loxodromes on an invariant surface in a three-dimensional Riemannian manifold, some of which generalize classical results about loxodromes on rotational surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In particular, we show how to parametrize a loxodrome on an invariant surface of $\mathbb{H}^2\times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}_3$ and we exhibit the loxodromes of some remarkable minimal invariant surfaces of these spaces. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) can cause significant disease in immunocompromised patients, and treatment options are limited by toxicities. CSJ148 is a combination of two anti-HCMV human monoclonal antibodies (LJP538 and LJP539) that bind to and inhibit the functions of viral HCMV glycoprotein B (gB) and the pentameric complex, consisting of glycoproteins gH, gL, UL128, UL130, and UL131. In this phase 2, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of CSJ148 for prophylaxis of HCMV in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. As would be expected in the study population, all the patients (100%) reported at least one treatment-emergent adverse event. There were 22 deaths during this study, and over 80% of the patients receiving placebo or CSJ148 developed at least one adverse event of grade 3 or higher severity. No subject who received antibody developed a hypersensitivity- or infusion-related reaction. CSJ148-treated patients showed trends toward decreased viral load, shorter median duration of preemptive therapy, and fewer courses of preemptive therapy. However, the estimated probability that CSJ148 decreases the need for preemptive therapy compared to placebo was 69%, with a risk ratio of 0.89 and a 90% credible interval of 0.61 to 1.31. The primary efficacy endpoint was therefore not met, indicating that CSJ148 did not prevent clinically significant HCMV reactivation in recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplants. Abstract

In the last three decades, human visual attention has been a topic of great interest in various disciplines. In computer vision, many models have been proposed to predict the distribution of human fixations on a visual stimulus. Recently, thanks to the creation of large collections of data, machine learning algorithms have obtained state-of-the-art performance on the task of saliency map estimation. On the other hand, computational models of scanpath are much less studied. Works are often only descriptive or task specific. This is due to the fact that the scanpath is harder to model because it must include the description of a dynamic. General purpose computational models are present in the literature, but are then evaluated in tasks of saliency prediction, losing therefore information about the dynamics and the behaviour. In addition, two technical reasons have limited the research. The first reason is the lack of robust and uniformly used set of metrics to compare the similarity between scanpath. The second reason is the lack of sufficiently large and varied scanpath datasets. In this report we want to help in both directions. We present FixaTons, a large collection of datasets human scanpaths (temporally ordered sequences of fixations) and saliency maps. It comes along with a software library for easy data usage, statistics calculation and implementation of metrics for scanpath and saliency prediction evaluation.

Abstract

In this work, we study helix spacelike and timelike surfaces in the Lorentzian Berger sphere $\s_{\varepsilon}^3$, that is the three-dimensional sphere endowed with a $1$-parameter family of Lorentzian metrics, obtained by deforming the round metric on $\s^3$ along the fibers of the Hopf fibration $\s^3\to \s^2({1}/{2})$ by $-\varepsilon^2$. Our main result provides a characterization of the helix surfaces in $\s_{\varepsilon}^3$ using the symmetries of the ambient space and a general helix in $\s_{\varepsilon}^3$, with axis the infinitesimal generator of the Hopf fibers. 50. Using a Simulation Game to Make Learning about Angles Meaningful. An Exploratory Study in Primary School

Abstract

As indicated in numerous research studies, schoolchildren encounter many difficulties and obstacles in learning the multifaceted concept of the angle. In order to explore the possibility of enhancing schoolchildren's understanding of such a concept, the authors present a study that aims at investigating some structural characteristics of Angolandia, a simulation game for learning about angles specifically designed according to theoretical-methodological choices for which references were initially drawn from the literature on simulation games and teaching mathematics. This research, involving 31 children from two, 4th-year primary school classes who played Angolandia, reports the observations made as the game was played, an analysis of a written interview on the angle with children before and after the educational activity and an interview with their teachers. These initial data are discussed and considered as the point of departure for systematic experimentation and future developments.
